I did a bunch of undergrad research on Bd/amphibian microbial ecology stuff and I just have to say Y E S to your charismatic megafauna meme! I can’t stand it, my lab had to fight over pennies to try to save frogs and salamanders in most biodiverse amphibian hotspots on the planet because people just want to pet bunnies and shit. God! So frustrating!!!
God it’s frustrating isn’t it! I’m lucky that people care about bees at least (even if they aren’t the right species of bees, native bees are more important and at risk compare to honey bees)

(late) crimbus present for @badgerofshambles! she has a theory that moby dick was actually a scout kaiju and wanted to commission me for it but I TRICKED HER and made it her crimbus present >::3c
the closeups are true-size and first one is “true piece” (as in the way i want it to be seen, i just also am immensely proud of everything so i made multiple versions)
this piece was a massive undertaking and probably the most intense digital painting (or any painting really) that i’ve done. this is the piece where digital painting finally clicked for me.
{{ more art from me | check out my webcomic | commission me }}

Heyo what kind of plant is this? Found in Badgerofshambles's backyard, Bellevue PA
---
Not 100% sure tbh!
It could easily be a Honeysuckle though, would be my best guess

badgerofshambles replied to your photoset “Kept forgetting to post about this, but does anyone know what this is?...”
Oh wait btw I’m pretty sure just from the front key and the back wings it was a wheel bug, Arilus cristatus. Probably picked up the fungus from hunting caterpillars.
There are quite a few wheel bugs in this area so very possible!  She gave it to me a few months ago, I just stuck it in my desk and forgot about it, so can’t say for certain the time of year, but pretty sure it was in the warmer months. If anyone needs more pics to be certain, I can take it apart or do whatever you need.  Not sure if I’m going to keep it, since I’m more interested in just figuring out what it is. O :

I got haunted by a deer last Halloween and he tried to kill me a week later while I was driving to chipotle
Reby what in the hell is going on with these Halloween deer
mrs-bluesky replied:
Damn, hope she recovers well! Perhaps she should appease the warlock in some way, set out a nice salt lick near that area :)
Thanks! Alas, she is a devout Christian and I doubt such heathen appeasements have any bearing on her outlook. Also this was literally on the border betwen Arlington and Alexandria in VA, so the weird part is that this was an eight-point buck in the city :o
birchbees replied:
oh, I hope she feels better soon!
Thank you - I think she’s more self-conscious about the potential for bruising under her arms with the crutches than anything to do with her hip. It’ll only be a few weeks recovery with any luck!

Found this in book store at the mall
ok I’m laughing because a) I’ve seen this and have asked my mom for it for Christmas and b) it appears to be next to several sexy calendars which amuses me because it fits right in as a sexy calendar even though it only contains regular pictures of Justin

Heya! I’m Reby and I’m studying for the HTL exam. This is my cram blog, where I’ll post pictures and descriptions of slides I’ve made in this past semester, concepts I’m working on memorizing and histology content from other blogs on tumblr. Occasionally you’ll see me reblog anecdotes from my personal blog over at @badgerofshambles
here we go!

Alright wait I’m on a rant now so. Part of me thinks, honestly? We’re gonna lose most of these species anyhow right. So should we just start a real big unified push towards frozen zoos? How realistic is it, to try to conserve species that are entirely connect and dependent on the their native ecosystem, when we know that even if we got people to stop tearing it all down and dumping mine waste into it (which spoiler, we won’t) we’d still probably lose them as a result of climate change or (cont)
(Cont) emerging disease? I just think the best way forward is to take some significant chunk of conservation funding and put it towards a gigantic frozen zoo vault, kinda like the seed one in Iceland (I know that ones melting out recently but you get the idea). I know some people think that that’s overly pessimistic but like. We’re ticking towards 8 billion people here, and by and large they don’t want frogs, they want Starbucks and cheap gas! You know!? Am I nuts or??? Anyhow great blog btw 🙃
There actually already is a bunch of frozen zoo’s.
San Diego Zoo
Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans
Australia Frozen Zoo
The Frozen Ark
university of portsmouth
Just to name a few. While It’s a good last resort idea, we don’t have the technology to use this genetic material and it’s probably best the general public don’t know a whole lot about these frozen zoo’s. Mostly because I’m afraid they’ll care less about conservation efforts because “we have frozen zoos! Who care’s if it goes extinct!”
