Some Assorted SequenceShift Fun Facts
I don't have art of this AU just yet and I don't have a specific topic I wanna focus on, so I decided to list some random facts in the AU. Some a bit more important than others.
There is no Barrier in this AU. Rather, instead the Monster Kingdom is a very strictly isolationistic underground country that humans are generally aware of, but absolutely not allowed in. This is due to humans in SequenceShift being a bit weaker and their war with the Monsters being considerably bloodier (well, dustier for the Monsters) on both sides. The current situation is the result of a very rough stalemate following a human occupation of the Underground, though things have died down a tad bit in more modern times.
The order of humans that fell into the Underground is Integrity -> Kindness -> Bravery -> Perseverance -> Patience -> Determination -> Justice
Clover in SequenceShift uses He/They pronouns.
Starlo and Martlet are both trans (Starlo is a Transman and Martlet is a Transwoman).
The current canonical pairings are Starlo x Dalv, Ceroba x Dina, and Moray x Martlet. I'm not against different pairings, though, as long as they aren't overly problematic. Also yeah, Ceroba and Chujin are divorced.
Kanako's 'Flowey' equivalent has been retooled quite a bit. Instead of being a flower again, Kanako is instead a pale fox-like amalgam known as Kit, who can transform into objects at will (referencing shapeshifting kitsune in Japanese folklore).
The Wild East was ravaged by the an unknown gunman sometime in the past. Almost half the town's population was killed and stirred up a lot of anti-human sentiment in the Underground. Currently, the Wild East is mainly a Ghost Town that only really acts as Ranger HQ.
Dina is well known as something of a folk hero along Frostpeak. She's greeted fondly by most of the residents, passes out candy to the kids, and is pretty good friends with Sans and Papyrus.
People say that the Honor Guard and Royal Rangers have a rivalry, but it's an Urban Legend. They generally get along pretty well with one another and the biggest point of conflict is Undyne and Starlo arguing over Anime vs. Westerns. It happens quite a bit.
Axis has both an EX and a NEO form. His EX-form was designed to better protect himself if he ever gets damaged enough. The NEO form basically turns him into a giant war mech, and designed at a time where the Kingdom was considering building robots to fill in the ranks of soldiers. Ceroba was VERY hesitant to approve of this upgrade for Axis and insisted it only be used in the worst case scenarios.
And that's what I got so far. Really loving how this AU is turning out so far.

AXIS MUNDI AND COLOSSAL HEADS
written: 2 october 2022 - 10 october 2022
[disclaimer: this specific entry is actually a paper i wrote for my art of latin america class. so it would be a little different from what my previous entries are. i would say this is a well written paper considering the grade i received. my professor made comments that i will take into consideration for the next time i write my paper, anyways.... here is axis mundi and colossal heads.]
the term veracruz usually seems to be in the air when referring to or talking about cultures in mesoamerica. as more things were uncovered, archeologists and possible art historians began categorizing the the specific names and tied them with their material culture. the first "mother culture" or "sister culture" was introduced upon learning. the olmec civilization was referred to as the "mother culture" or "sister culture;" however, as far as the learning process goes, and the anthropological meaning and difference between the two, was the olmec civilization a site that genuinely revolutionized the beginning of mesoamerica cultures? before the maya culture, there were the olmecs. "olmeca" is referred to as the "rubber people," symbolizing people who inhabited the "jungle country of the gulf coast" (coe 58). the olmecs were one of the earliest large settlements out there during their time, and a couple of sites that will be discussed are san lorenzo and la venta. although there is much to talk about with the start of their civilization, the main focus will be material culture and how it resonated with the foundation of the different cultures in mesoamerica. the two main concepts that progressively show throughout the olmec civilization are the axis mundi and the colossal heads with their symbolic meanings.
a type of cosmovision that is important to the culture of mesoamerica is the axis mundi, as known as the center of the world. the axis mundi is the fifth direction of the cosmovision, and it comes in many different shapes and forms. as learned in class, altar 4 from the olmec pre-classic site of la venta is one of the main axis mundis because of its function and symbolic meaning. although not depicted well in the la venta powerpoint, four corncobs surround the person in the middle. the four corncobs represent the four directions; north, south, east, and west, making the person in the middle the essential direction: the center. the person in the center of the altar can be addressed as a royal or high-status member because of the specific ball game helment he is wearing (ellsworth notes from jhanella mae). the figure wearing the ball game helmet signifies that the person is a warrior. mesoamerican cultures commonly associate themselves with the underworld as they believe there are three worlds: the heavens, earth, and the underworld. as the viewers can see, he is emerging from the cave. the cave that he emerges from is the portal to the underworld. in this case, he is coming out of the underworld and onto Earth. the heavens are depicted through the thick sky band on top of the altar. not only that but to the bottom of the altar is a twisted band that symbolizes the sense of motion. the band will always let the viewers know that the world will keep moving.
as archeologists surveyed more of the olmec site, they found well-preserved colossal heads. coe describes the colossal heads as “portraits of mighty rulers, with flat-faced, thick-lipped features,” which may sound unsettling but clearly expressed (coe 68). he also mentions wearing “helmet-like headgear that probably served as protection in both war and in the ceremonial game played with a rubber ball throughout mesoamerica,” which is similar to the la venta altar 4 because of the ball game helmet (coe 69). these large colossal heads were deeply buried throughout san lorenzo’s site and dated back to the early formative period (coe 68-69). the large colossal heads were made from basalt rock which can only be found near a volcano; this means that the olmec people dragged the massive basalt rock more than 50 miles north to get to their site in san lorenzo (coe 68). the colossal heads have different ball game helmets identifying their different rules during their time. their helmet could have anything from a jaguar paw to multi-drilled beads (coe 68-69). although not depicted in coe’s book, some colossal heads have destroyed mouths and noses. they create the colossal heads for the rulers to channel their power; however, once they pass away, they purposely destroy the moth and nose for the power to follow them to the afterlife. a website was posted on the key olmec sites powerpoint to understand and see the different helmets on the colossal heads. not only did the website show where each colossal head was found, but it also showed the size difference between each head.
to consider the olmec site as one of the first cultures in mesoamerica is establishing. although not as significant as la venta altar 4 and the colossal heads, honorable mentions found at the sites of an olmec civilization include a stele that can depict anything about a ruler or monuments scattered throughout the site of la venta, signifying a burial or sacrificial site. nowadays, some people do not agree that altars are not altars; however, we cannot change history. la venta altar 4 will be part of history whether some agree with it. it is a cosmovision that represents the five directions of the universe. there are more statues with symbolic meanings to talk about; however, the olmec colossal heads are one statue that made its mark and significance to civilization that cannot be forgotten.
signing off: jhanella mae

Sooo, I bought the Lotus Tower model kit and, of course, I went overboard making it as accurate as possible to the show. To no one's surprise, I'm guessing? 😅
For reference, this is what the completed model (sans horses) looks like without most* of my alterations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*The awning material and decoration is my only alteration at this point, as I didn't like the fabric they included with the kit.
I had so much fun with this model! It is well-made, has moving parts, and is actually fairly easy to put together, with most parts just clicking into place. It even has furniture details inside!
Let me know what you think! Have you got the kit? How are you finding the building process to be? If you want to hear a more detailed review of it and see my progress shots and details of my own creative additions, click below:
First, unboxing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is how the box arrives. I ordered it from CPOP Universe and it arrived well-packaged and undamaged within a matter of weeks.
Along with the kit itself - which as you can see consists of a stack of laser-cut sheets coded from A-Q, and numbers detailing the specific parts - you receive a coaster (ceramic, backed with cork, and very pretty), little standees of difanghua, a letter styled after the ones difang recieve from Li Lianhua, and a replica of the booklet of yangzhouman techniques.
The process:
The first floor came together pretty quickly:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glue is provided, but isn't necessary for a lot of the pieces, as I found the measurements for a lot of the joints to be pretty snug and able to hold together themselves. Glue is necessary for some parts, though, particularly for areas such as the step up to the rear sleeping area. Strong glue. Here is what the fist floor looks like:
Tumblr media
Fitting on the ceiling turned out to be the hardest part of most of the build. All of the holes on the second floor had to line up with every joint on top of the walls and doors.
The next big step I encountered was a curiosity. How to make the rear wall work? There was a curious piece clearly meant to anchor the rope, and a round hole that - much like the doors - meant that this piece was supposed to rotate - and even lock. But I received no instructions on how to achieve that. I found this puzzle (which I like to think was an intentional challenge, given the gadget-orientated FDB) to be a fun challenge. So I won't show you the inner workings and spoil it, but I'll show you the working product:
Next was the rather fiddly job of creating the sail awning. I imagine this will be quite difficult for some as there's no clear indication of how to fix the material in place.
My instinct was to sew it as that is also a craft I have practice in, though granted not everyone who buys this kit will be as comfortable with a sewing needle. The two swatches of fabric provided is also quite prone to fraying, and is quite thick and canvas-like. So, knowing that the awning is a big feature of Lotus Tower, I decided I could do better:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left is the provided fabric, and on the right is my own material (an old blouse that I never wore, with patches dyed with my promarker pens).
After that, things should've been an easy home run, as all I had to do was affix the wheels to their axis points and put the horses together. However, quite unfortunately, one of the wheels hadn't been cut out in my kit. I had to cut it out myself with a coping saw, a Stanley knife and much patience😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It came out looking rough, but nothing a little sanding and a touch up with my promarkers couldn't fix. I also eventually glued the wheel caps to the axis to prevent the wheels popping off every time I touched it, and they all still spin fine (minus the one I had to cut myself, that one's a little sticky😅). Then came the horses, and I was done!
Or so I thought. "Don't you think it looks a little too brown?" said my detail-obsessed brain. "We could do... more...."
And so I did.
My additions:
I used scraps coloured by my blue marker to create the beams of the house, and later coloured the fence posts red.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a second sail to hand under the stairs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I created a second planter box (again, from the scraps and coloured with promarkers - two sets of flowers were included in the kit, so I could put one in each planter.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I even created a rain chain using old earring backs, jewellery findings and a chain, spray painted matte black and then painted blue-grey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To colour the roofs, I likewise painted them a light blue-grey (/brown for Hulijing's kennel), then used a darker blue promarker to roughly add in texture.
I painted the weather vane, and used scraps to add in its missing two cardinal points.
Tumblr media
And then finally, I made a winch for the rear wall! It's also easy to turn with the roof on, so I'm very pleased even though it's a little rough looking 😅
Tumblr media
Had to gif my video clip because tumblr said boo no to more than one :(
And that's it, that's my latest build! I found this kit very fun, loved the process and seeing Lotus Tower come to life. I also loved adding in all the details to make it just that bit more accurate to the show. My only true criticisms are 1) small design oversights with the base wood colour being a tad too dark imo; the missing arms on the weather vane; and no second flowerbed (although I may be being a tad too pedantic about it 😅). 2) The fact that one of the wheels in my kit didn't get cut out properly (a quality check issue).
Obviously, I made the choice to use a different material than the fabric included so I can't speak to how satisfactory it is. However, if I were ever in the position to give IQiYi direct feedback, I'd suggest they include thinner fabric, and paint (or paint suggestions, as I know model paints aren't usually allowed through customs in these kinds of kits) for the roofs, because (by way of how they're constructed) they're just raw edges of the reinforced card parts - completely uncoloured, despite being a very visual element of the piece.
Thank you for reading this far lol Keep an eye out for more art and craft posts! (I have a Siji Manor set update coming shortly 👀)
