Yeah, Dean buys a haunted house. On purpose. After a quick salt and burn of the bitter old ghost of Naomi Novak, Dean can finally have something in his life go right.
But the ghost isn't what Dean's expecting. The spirit he finds is a polite, broad shouldered, blue eyed man in a trench coat who, instead of throwing Dean through the window in a vengeful rage, asks Dean for help.
Dean agrees to assist Castiel, the Friendly Ghost, with moving on to the next life. Cas isn't like any ghost Dean had ever met. The usual rules don't apply to him. He's kind to Dean. He loves books. His cold touch brings mortals close to death.
The more time Dean spends with Cas, the less Dean wants to let him go. Cas is good company. Dean hasn't let himself get close to anyone in years. In a different life, Dean could have fallen in love with him.
Or maybe he already has.

He never did find out why they started, but he certainly did notice when.
They were sitting on the couch one winter evening, watching some kind of western that Dean had picked out, and Castiel was watching with apparent contentment. It was perfect. Well, almost. A small patch of his back itched, and no matter how he tried to scratch it, it wouldn't go away. He twisted and reached and shifted so many times that Cas took notice, going so far as to pause their movie.
“Dean. Are you alright?”
“Yeah.”
Cas gave him a look.
“Yeah, just have an itch I can’t scratch.”
“Allow me.”
Castiel had reached across the space between them, offering sweet relief for a few seconds.
“Better?”
“Mmm.”
Even so, the itch hadn’t been gone. Only minutes later, Dean had stood abruptly and walked away, driven mad by the itching.

Destiel Recs #9 - Thanksgiving weekend long reads!
I wanted to squeeze in one more rec post before the end of the month with some longer (20-100k) fics I’ve read recently. These would all make for great Thanksgiving weekend reads if you’ve got the extra time off and needs some good Dean/Cas fics to check out. I’ll start with some new ones from this year’s DCBB and then round out the list with some older stories, too.
when you build your house then call me home by terpsichorean (90k) - I’m very fussy with baby!Jack fics - I don’t like when they’re overly saccharine/sweet or seem to take away too much of the Jack we got in canon. But this epic canon-divergent/au did all the things I LOVE in a good baby!Jack fic. Here, Cas lives after he and Kelly together battle and kill Lucifer, and he takes infant Jack on the run with him all across the world (thanks to healed wings) until settling into a home in California. Some time later, Dean accidentally stumbles upon them and both sides are wary - Dean still thinks Jack is a menace who at least needs his grace removed; Cas will do whatever it takes to protect this child. Slowly they rebuild contact and their relationship (with some help from Sam, who has his own connection to Jack being “born bad”). When danger does come looking for Jack at last, they must all work together and Dean starts to realize a family life with Cas and Jack might be just what he’s been missing. There’s so much I loved here - dadstiel, bamf!Cas, awesome Kelly AND Mary Winchester, and just a very satisfying take on how canon COULD have gone. Lovely and very satisfying all around.

Still Waters Run Deep by thisisapaige (41k) - I have mentioned that ma’lak box fics are my catnip, right? So I was bouncing with anticipation to read this one for the DCBB and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Canon-divergent after 15x09, it’s a story of what might happen if Cas did take on the Mark of Cain to trap Chuck and had to be trapped in the box, at the bottom of the ocean...but after a year, he breaks out and Chuck breaks free. Dean and Sam find Cas, now mute and struggling to recover from his ordeal. Meanwhile, biblical storms are flooding the country and it may take all of their resources to save the world from a vengeful god. This fic hit so many of my id buttons it’s not even funny (hurt!Cas becoming bamf!Cas, caretaker!Dean, end of the world drama, teamwork, yadda yadda yadda...) The art by reafre is absolutely stunning too. Don’t miss this one!
Kriah by ioascc (54k) - Another wonderful baby!Jack AU, though this one takes on a different starting point. The events of 12x23 unfold as in canon except Jack doesn’t instantly age-up, so Dean and Sam are left with a baby to raise while grieving and in shock from the loss of Cas and Mary. Dean takes to the responsibility wholeheartedly by seeing this as Cas’s child, not Lucifer’s, and vowing to raise him as Cas would have wanted. He moves out of the bunker and takes on the identity of the grieving widower and single parent wholeheartedly - with help from Sam, Claire, Jody and Donna, of course. In this story, it takes four whole years before Jack is able to awaken Cas in the Empty and reunite with his friends and family. This is a beautiful, raw, emotional and oh-so real take on what grief and grieving is like. I also appreciated the believability of how baby/toddler Jack was written - I’m not a parent myself but again, this felt real and believable in a way I don’t often find in baby-fic.
In the Rolling Up of Sleeves by Elf_barbarian (20k) - If you’re not allergic to Heaven fic, this is an absolutely beautiful take on one that does a few things differently than I’ve seen before. Cas finds himself in Heaven with no idea precisely how he ended up there instead of the Empty - Jack doesn’t seem to know, either. So he worried if his “deal” with the Empty is still in place, even when Dean arrives in Heaven and they should be able to start building a happy (after)life together. What I liked about this fic is how the author handled the souls being the ones to build/combine their Heavens together as they wished - it makes a lot more sense than just “opening all the doors” whether or not some people WANTED to be together in Heaven or not. It’s lovely and soft and just...a feel-good read with just the right amount of light angst and pining for a happy story.
Dust Bowl Odyssey by trailsofpaper (34k) - I confess I'm not well-read enough to get all the literary references in this one (haven't read Steinbeck since high school) but this is still an imaginative and delightful AU-take on Dean being resurrected from Hell by Cas, and their story that followed. We see some familiar faces along the way in this 1930s-era version of their story, as Dean has to cross a dream-like landscape in order to find his way back to life on Earth.
The First and the Last by perilously (30k) - a 2016 DCBB fic I came across while in the mood to read some apocalyptic/end of the world fic. This is an excellent canon divergence story set at the end of Season 11. The soul bomb didn't work - Amara swallows all the souls and the end is still coming, but she gives Dean the gift of a little more time before that happens. Cue a road trip across a hot, desolate and dying America as TFW tries to check in on their friends as much as they can...but then Billie shows up, saying Cas may just be their one and only chance to save the world. Creative and also featuring the kickass, Linda Tran, and with awesome art by thefriendlypigeon, too.
Sun Can't Set Until Nine by LeverDrift (67k) - I’ve yet to be disappointed in a LeverDrift fic, and this one is just about perfect. Set loosely in S11-12 era, Cas's powers are fluctuating so he starts spending more and more time at the bunker. Dean is determined to make him actually stay...without having to ask him to do so. So he starts fixing up Cas's room and the bunker in general, and meanwhile he's having increasingly vivid dreams featuring Cas...while in waking hours Cas just keeps pulling further and further away from him. This is some sweet, angsty and satisfying pining fic where I was fairly certain what was going on early on, but that made it no less delicious. Charlie is an awesome friend to Dean here as well.
The Smell Before The Rain by jscribbles (73k) - I very rarely read a/b/o fics because I very rarely enjoy them. This is probably the first omegaverse SPN fic I have 100% loved and can rec without hesitation! I think because it takes our canon versions of Cas, Dean and Sam and drops them into an a/b/o universe, forcing them to deal with this new societal structure (and changes to their physiology/biology), and presents their horror/confusion at having to deal with it all. In an alternative end to Season 14, Chuck blasts the three of them to one of his abandoned Earths - one where angels and demons fought openly in a godless world, one where biology is, well, rather different from our own. It turns out even angels are at war against other angels, and they too are subject to a/b/o dynamics in order to reproduce...and our transported Cas is the first non-sterile omega angel to exist in years. Cas is freshly grieving Jack’s death, however, Dean is still angry over Mary’s death, and it's not the best time at all for Cas to go into a sudden "super-heat". I loved this fic because it was more about the worldbuilding, angst and relationships than the sexual aspects of omegaverse. It was also cool to see an AU!Castiel in this universe who had his own band of renegade angels trying to fight the alpha!angels in Heaven, there’s plenty of action and drama and just...this is absolutely an omegaverse fic for people who don't like omegaverse fics in general. (Do heed the warnings, though.)
Starving Faithful by anothersea (20k) - Finally, for some Thanksgiving “dessert”, how about 20k worth of insanely hot and kinky Destiel PWP? Cas catches Dean masturbating while praying to him (*cough*) and decides Dean must be cleansed of such unholy thoughts. What follows is an insane smut fest with spanking, face fucking, finger fucking, dirty talk, unexpected use of the hilt of Cas’s angel blade and zero refractory period. This story has no right to be as good and hot as it is for being this over-the-top ridiculous. The ending “twist” makes it especially perfect.

"Fuck!" Castiel screamed, swearing like his mother hated. "Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" He hit the steering wheel with each word, making the horn honk.
Castiel pressed his forehead to the wheel, hiding his head in his arms. This was one setback. Only one setback. He could walk in his uncomfortable dress shoes until his feet blistered and bled and he was sweating under his suit. He could hitchhike, like in On the Road, and try every apple pie along the way.
Well, he could if he had any money. He managed to grab some cash from an ATM before his accounts were frozen, but that hadn't lasted him long. He barely had enough to cover his last tank of gas. He hadn't eaten since last night. He wasn't sure when he would again.
A choked noise escaped Castiel's throat. It was not a sob. It was not a sob. It was not a sob.
Someone knocked on his window. "Hey, uh, buddy?" came a muffled voice. "You okay?"
Castiel sat up. He turned his head, which felt as if it were floating in the clouds. He could see the vague shadowy outline of a person through his window against the bloom of smoke.
"What do you think?" Castiel asked, sharply.
A pause from the other person. "Well, not that bad if you're not passed out. Though if you keep sitting in all those fumes you're gonna regret it."
The mystery person did have a point. Perhaps Castiel's lightheadedness wasn't solely due to his frustration. He told the person to stand back and opened the car door. When he stepped out, his legs turned to liquid. He stumbled.
"Whoa, buddy!" A pair of strong hands gripped Castiel by the shoulders. "You're good. You're okay."
Castiel lifted his head towards the voice and saw an angel. He had a halo, head crowned with the golden rays of the setting sun behind him. His light brown hair waved in the wind, the stands in front of his face framing his delicate features. Those delicate features were deceptive, however, as this mysterious man was filled with strength. The strength radiated from his eyes, bright green in the sunlight and surrounded by long lashes. In them, there was a story, one of hardship where he came out the other side filled with a quiet confidence, with the knowledge he could survive. Castiel's saviour was a warrior angel, like Archangel Michael. Castiel studied the man's hands, half-expecting him to be holding a flaming sword.
The angel cleared his throat. "Buddy? You with me?"
Castiel raised his gaze to his saviour again. The sun had lowered, so he no longer had his halo, but the divinity within him remained.
"Are you an angel?" Castiel asked, his voice breathy, full of childlike wonder. It was an odd thing for him to say. He lost his faith a long time ago. But, in front of this man, this angel, it resurged.
The angel snorted, then shook his head. "Okay," he said, drawing out the word, "you definitely need some fresh air."

In the darkest depths of the ocean, sealed into the ma'lak box with Chuck trapped behind the Mark, Castiel loses the battle against God's rage. When Sam and Dean find Castiel on a dark patch of highway— the Mark missing and his grace weak— he cannot speak.
It rains. It rains and it rains and it rains. It is a Great Flood.
In order to stop God, save the world, and resolve the issues simmering between them for years, Castiel and Dean need to communicate.
Perhaps they should build an ark instead.
Have you ever wondered what would have happened if one of Sam’s visions from Chuck was the actual timeline and Cas with the MOC was trapped in the ma’lak box? Then Still Waters Run Deep checks those boxes in an intriguing way. Although the story doesn’t focus on Cas being destructive when he’s marked (we do get hints of why imprisoning Cas in the ma’lak box was necessary), we are offered the opportunity to see the aftermath and how Cas is deeply affected by this experience, which is thoroughly engrossing. This is also written from Cas' point of view, and I absolutely adored how much Cas loves Dean that is evident from Cas’ extremely descriptive inner thoughts. It felt as if I was reading poetry, and I was awestruck at the vividness of Cas’ love for Dean. The author also stays true to the storyline and realistically portrays Cas as mute as a result of his ordeal, but that enhances the importance and beauty of Cas’ perspective and inner thoughts. There is no “magic wand” to repair all the damage that Cas experiences, but I respect that realism and that also makes Cas’ journey to the end of his own story even more impactful.
Another clever aspect to the plot is how the author describes the new pending apocalypse and how all of our protagonists come together again to defeat Chuck hopefully for the final time. What left a deep impression with me is that Cas is the central figure to save the world making us root for Cas even more. I also enjoyed the creativity of the author in drawing parallels to this story with fairy tales. This balanced out the atmosphere of anxiety from the looming showdown with Chuck. But, best of all, this apocalypse is the backdrop for quite a few endearing and passionate moments between Dean and Cas.
As an alternate timeline, Still Waters Run Deep is riveting and provides us with very believable explanations for the new apocalypse and how to finally defeat Chuck. If you are a supporter of Cas, you will be wholly satisfied to see Cas prove that he is a hero.

Summary: Dean doesn't have the guts to grab Sam from Stanford. Dean fails to find his missing dad. Dean can, however, hunt the ghost haunting his house.
Yeah, Dean buys a haunted house. On purpose. After a quick salt and burn of the bitter old ghost of Naomi Novak, Dean can finally have something in his life go right.
But the ghost isn't what Dean's expecting. The spirit he finds is a polite, broad shouldered, blue eyed man in a trench coat who, instead of throwing Dean through the window in a vengeful rage, asks Dean for help.
Dean agrees to assist Castiel, the Friendly Ghost, with moving on to the next life. Cas isn't like any ghost Dean had ever met. The usual rules don't apply to him. He's kind to Dean. He loves books. His cold touch brings mortals close to death.
The more time Dean spends with Cas, the less Dean wants to let him go. Cas is good company. Dean hasn't let himself get close to anyone in years. In a different life, Dean could have fallen in love with him.
Or maybe he already has.
Excerpt: “Hey, uh, Castiel?” Dean asked. “Where’s the statue?”
A hiss of electricity, then Castiel said, right in Dean’s ear, “What statue?”
Jumping Janis Joplin on a jackrabbit! Dean put his back to a ghost, didn’t think twice about it, and now that ghost was right fucking behind him. Dean whipped around, trying to lift his gun with one hand, and attempting to dig out his iron knuckles from his jacket pocket with the other. Instead, he hit Castiel, his whole body moving through the ghost.
Cold.
No, that wasn’t a strong enough description. Frostbite. An Arctic expedition wearing only his Batman underwear. Losing all the blood in his body. His heart stopping. Darkness. Being lowered into his grave.
Death.
It was like death.
Dean slammed against the floor, gasping and shivering. Pain radiated through his body. Rolling onto his back, he waited for the stars to clear from his vision.
“Dean? Dean?” Castiel’s voice came from above. “I’m so sorry. Are you okay?”
Slowly, Castiel’s concerned blue eyes came into view. Taking a few short, shallow breaths, Dean had enough air in his aching lungs to force out an, “I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not.”
As Dean struggled to sit up, Castiel retreated. Dean put a hand on his chest and felt his heart beating. He was back in the land of the living.
He’d never had that happen before. Most ghosts used their psychic powers to fight. A few had punched him or grabbed him and yeah, it was cold and unpleasant, but Dean had never fallen through one before. That couldn’t be summed up as unpleasant. Dean was convinced he had died for a few seconds. He probably would have been completely dead if it’d happened with any other ghost. The vengeful spirits he’d faced off against before would have finished the job.
But not this ghost. Not Castiel.
Castiel stood with his back against the wall. The paint showed through his semi-transparent body, casting him a green sheen. Shoulders slumped, Castiel stared at his hands as Dean pulled himself back onto his feet.
“Tah-Dah!” Dean said once he got up, slightly swaying. He wiggled his fingers. “See? Totally fine.” Maybe it was odd that Dean felt the need to comfort a ghost after that, but Castiel clearly regretted it. “It was only a little death.”
Castiel’s head snapped up at that. “The, uh— The—” He cleared his throat. “The French way?”
“I—” Dean lowered his brows. “I don’t know what that means.” He tapped his chest. “I mean that it sucked but I’m still ticking. So, let’s get back to helping you.”
“You’ll still do that?”
“Yeah, buddy. It’s what I do. Just, ah, no touching and no spooking. Capiche?”
Castiel nodded and said, seriously, “I capiche.”
How in the hell could a ghost who kind of, sort of, killed him be so freaking cute?
Oh, no.

I do not have 20 fics yet but I will list my AO3 thus far :) Re my favorite, I think I love ALL my babies but I really love the opener to Freedom is a Length of Rope. Idk why the thought of jellyfish streamer legs makes me smile.
Patterns? I guess establishing the sense of place and setting asap? My journalism undergrad background is showing.

1. Angels Don’t Fear the Reaper (post canon/generally compliant with canon but adjacent re the end of the show. Death!Dean WIP):
When his eyes first open, there is nothing but darkness. Not the velvety, deep black of night, but the steely, thin murk of nothingness. Of cold.
Of death. Of Death.
Somehow, it feels like coming home.
2. The Dandelion and the Bee (nature AU!/allegory):
Once upon a time there was a dandelion, who lived in a wonderful garden.
His face was the color of sunshine, with a hint of blazing green from his stalk and leaves.
3. deep in the meadow, down by the willow (a coda to the above)
The dandelion grew accustomed to this new rhythm of life with the bee.
They watched the sunrise and listened to birds sing in the trees, their own private concert. Sometimes the bee left to pollinate flowers, but the leaving didn’t scare the dandelion anymore.
4. Freedom is a Length of Rope (a ficlet for Jack’s birthday, and Dean’s dealing with a few things of his own):
The bunker floor is littered with bright bits of gold confetti. Some of the balloons came untied from the chairs earlier and now drift across the ceiling, their rounded tops bumping against it like meandering jellyfish with long curly white streamers for legs.
Dean escapes the sounds of the party for a minute, ducking outside for air. He fills his lungs with oxygen, inhaling slowly. Then exhaling.
5. Mae the Fourth Be With You (a ficlet for @seraphcastiel‘s birthday where theres a Star Wars joke and Cas gets words wrong):
“CAS! Get your feathery ass down here, pronto!”
Dean’s voice echoes through the corridor, tinged with frustration.
Cas looks up from the morning paper. The page in his hand is folded into a careful square around today’s crossword puzzle.
6. Driver Picks the Music (a ficlet about a flashback to the Free to Be You and Me fanfic gap of Cas riding in the passenger seat of the Impala for the first time):
Cas is driving to the farmer’s market.
The road is open and empty, so early on a Saturday that traffic hasn’t yet crowded the expanse of asphalt. Cas rolls a window down, folding his arm over the side.
Cool spring air pours inside the SmartCar.
7. Britannicanatural (a ficlet about a little hobby Cas picks up after a traveling salesman convinces him to buy a product):
Dean uses his hip to nudge the bunker door open, balancing the greasy paper bags and cup holder of drinks in his arms.
“Honeyyyyy I’m home!” He roars out in his best Desi Arnaz impression, inspired by the impromptu I Love Lucy marathon Jack insisted on last weekend.
He stops short at the sight of Cas on the floor of the study room, surrounded by books in mahogany leather binding.
8. An Atrocity is Happening (cursed slash amazing? collab with @goth-dean. reverse French Mistake, FM Jackles visits the spn universe. We are sorry. Also mind the tags, this one is explicit):
Jensen has no memory of the week Misha died. The week he apparently stayed at Jared's house, and the two of them beat the living shit out of an extra. The week that same extra stormed the set with a gun and shot Eric Kripke stone dead. All Jensen knows is that all of his credit cards are maxed out and Danneel isn’t talking to him. He’s staying in a hotel near the set. Dee suggested he stay at Jared’s, but Jensen has a feeling that whatever it was that caused him to black out for a week, Jared had something to do with it.
Also Jensen hates Alpacas. Who owns an alpaca? So here he is.

Summary:
“You won��t have a lot of time,” Jack warned from where he sat on the table, legs swinging. “The Shadow….it should be asleep now that it has Cas, but it would keep him close. If it catches you, there’s nothing I can do.” He worried his lip. “You’ll be lost forever.”
“Awesome.”
“Dean, this is an insane risk to take. Just give us a few more—”
“Weeks? Sam, it’s already been two months.” Two months up here, who knows how long there. “I’m not letting him rot in there another day if I can help it.”
“Please be careful, Dean,” Jack mumbled.
Dean looked at him, thrown off by the softness of his voice. Jack avoided his gaze and fidgeted, oddly childlike for a cosmic being. Of course, he was only just three.
“C’mere, kid.” Dean opened his arms and instantly Jack was in them, clinging to him. He had already lost one dad; Dean wasn’t going to let him lose another. “Don’t worry, I’ll bring him home.”
Jack buried his face in the rough twill of Dean’s jacket, which still bore the imprint of Castiel’s final farewell, before Sam’s hand fell on his shoulder and he let go.
“Are you ready?” he asked, face still full of concern.
“Let’s do this.”

Cas and Rowena move into the wealthy suburb of Lavender Pines and work to become the most well-liked newlywed couple on the block. Sam and Dean support them from the bunker. It's a milk run of a case. Simple. Easy.

Castiel should have known something was up when Sam phoned him, the request incredibly polite when asking Castiel to return to the bunker. Typically, the Winchesters were much more brusque, though it was usually Dean making the call.
Because, less than a minute after entering the bunker, he was met with a smiling Rowena, a frowning Dean, and a fidgeting Sam.
“Hello, Castiel,” Rowena said, voice low and eyes watching his every move down the stairs, “so kind of you to come.”
“Hello,” Castiel said. “Sam, Dean. Why is she here?”
Dean opened his mouth but, before he could speak Sam stepped forward and said, “We have a case. Sort of. Rowena thought we could use your help.”
“A case.” Castiel narrowed his eyes. “Sort of.”
The group stood silently. Sam kept wringing his hands, periodically wiping them on his jeans. Dean appeared to have a bad case of indigestion, his mouth clamped shut. Rowena, however, remained her usual composed self.
Rowena approached Castiel. “Well, now that we’re all here, we should get to business.” She reached into her skirt pocket and produced a small black box. A simple gold band gleamed from the pillow inside when she opened it. “Castiel, would you please do me the honour of being my unlawfully, falsely wedded husband?”
All three men spoke in unison.
“What?” Castiel asked in confusion.
“What!” Sam shouted in shock.
“What,” Dean stated in displeasure.
Rowena smiled.
