I just realized that apparently I never shared this series here on Tumblr??
I call it Living Paintings, as they are recreations of extinct animals that some artists actually saw and painted from memory, a long time ago.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
our beloved ancient cattle!!! they used to be huuuuuuuuge and i love and miss them so much. they Definitely fit the moose+bison+yak+bear mold, and bc a lot of the representations of them vary u have heaps of wiggle room via designs!!!
2 gaur!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
gaur are HUUUUGGEEE theyre the biggest living bovine iirc!! and their ears r very big and round like a bears...
tho unfortunately the gaur arent domesticated, they do have a domesticated cousin called the gayal!!!! but they look a little more 'normal' ig eifjsjsdjf i prefer the gaur

Lascaux cave art of the aurochs and my pin interpretation.
I'd love to draw an aurochs sometime, their remains have also been found where I grew up. They must have been magnificent. :)

Animal of the Day!
Eurasian Aurochs (Bos primigenius)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Britannica)
Extinction Date- 1627
Habitat- Europe; Northern Africa; Central Asia
Size (Weight/Length)- 1,000 kg; 1.8 m tall
Diet- Grasses; Nuts; Leaves
Cool Facts- The Eurasian aurochs was a majestic species of megafauna cattle that lived throughout the Pleistocene. Aurochs were believed to live in small herds and have a similar hierarchy to their current descendents of domesticated cattle. Due to their massive size, Eurasian aurochs had little to fear outside of prides of lions or large tigers. Their cultural significance travels throughout the Neolithic peoples of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Aurochs were favored creatures for cave paintings and fights in the Roman Colosseum. Domestication of aurochs began in the Fertile Crescent when humans began civilization. Unfortunately, Eurasian aurochs were driven to extinction by over-hunting and a quickly transforming landscape that resulted in the death of many megafauna species. Today, their closest relative is the rare, Spanish Pajuna cattle.
Rating- 12/10 (The loss of prehistoric landscapes resulted in the loss of megafauna worldwide.)

What are your thoughts and feelings on the whole 'Tauros' backbreeding-to-aurochs project?

though i do love and miss aurochs a lot, i think its more important to focus on the conservation of the species we have on earth right now! we dont really have a niche in the ecosystem that Only Aurochs Can Fill yk? at best we r diverting resources tht could be used to help the native wildlife and at worst bringing these big dangerous creatures back could disrupt stuff even more...
i do love aurochs! but theyre not here right now . and a lot of different struggling species that fill the same niche are. you know? i think we should help them with the technology we r using to breed towards aurochs... it just seems a bit silly to me.

Did you see this preview of my comic on Iron Circus Comics’ Failure to Launch BackerKit project page and wonder: "what ARE all those animal skeletons?!?"
Well wonder no more: here's a version with every species labeled--scientific and common names both!
Read my upcoming comic about de-extinction by supporting the “Failure to Launch” anthology!

It’s been a while!!  Here’s an Aurochs illustration I’ve nearly finished as part of a local project... this has taken a while too. I’ve been busy being a mum.
