7 PM
Your best Jimmy Choos click gingerly as you walk up to the hostess stand at one of the most popular restaurants in Manhattan. He had made the reservation in your name, which you gave to the hostess. She takes a minute to consider you, cocking a brow as she silently clocks your ASOS cocktail dress. You looked chic enough that she could forgive you. Her moment wasn’t lost on you, this part of the Upper West Side was so stuffy so you put on your best.
Feeling slightly self-conscious about your attire you brushed the feeling off quickly. He would be here soon and he’d reassure you how beautiful you look. When you’d met for coffee he’d make you feel so sexy and confident with how sure of himself he was. So when he asked you to dinner at one of the most renowned places in the city and said he wanted to talk tonight you accepted immediately.
“Right this way” the hostess said and broke you out of your self-doubting stupor and guided you towards a some-what secluded table towards the back of the restaurant.
“Here are some menus for you two, if you’d like anything to drink while you wait, your waiter should be here soon”, she sent you an artificial smile and turned on her heel back to the stand.
You picked up a menu and it left you reeling at the prices. You had half a mind to text him and see if he wanted to go somewhere else. Based off of the way he dresses and how he had tipped the barista on your first outing you thought better of it. He’d said he wanted to treat you, so you’ll let him.
7:15 PM
You decided to wait to order anything to drink until he got here, too afraid of the price tag attached to any bottle of wine on the menu.
You took a sip of your water and checked your texts for the second time since sitting down. Still nothing, you didn’t want to text him just yet, you knew he was busy and you didn’t want to seem overbearing. You knew he was a CFO and he’d be coming from the financial district when traffic was insane. You could forgive him. You take another sip of your water hoping it’ll wash all of your doubts away. Besides, it’s not like he’s late-late, he’s like, fashionably late, he’s working-man late.
7:30 PM
Okay, so he’s late-late, don’t panic. Sometimes things happen, he’s only human and this is only your second date.
Your waiter approaches the table again, eyebrows raised expectantly at you. The smug look on his face says he’s thinking what you’re too afraid to.
You order yourself a $25 martini. Your waiter promises to return and you finish off your water.
Time to craft the perfect text that says ‘Hey I’m here, where tf are you?’ without actually asking where the fuck he’s at. You tap away nervously on your phone.
‘Hey, I’ve got a table towards the back, closer to the end of the bar’ Perfect.
7:45 PM
You’re still sitting solo at the table, you feel the beginnings of humiliation creep into your features. You feel warm, your brows form a seemingly permanent crease of worry, and you are trying everything in your power to suppress the tears you felt building up.
You don’t make eye contact with your waiter when he stops by again, playing it off like you were sending a text. But you tell him you’ll be right back so that he doesn’t give up your table.
You walk quickly to the bathroom hoping no one will notice your trembling face. You feel just like a middle schooler that got dumped at the dance. You make it to a bathroom stool and dial your best friend, Wanda.
“Is everything okay? You’re supposed to be out with your mystery date aren’t you?” She had answered almost immediately.
You sniffled a bit and took a shaky inhale. “Y-yes, our reservation was for 7 and he put it in my name, I texted him once already but I don’t wanna seem too overbearing for a second date, y’know? But something feels off. I don’t know, maybe I’m being crazy.”
“You’re definitely not being crazy, it sounds fishy to me. If he doesn’t answer in five minutes I want you to leave and come straight over. I’ll have white Russians and Drag Race waiting for you” Wanda always knew just what to say, just how to make you feel. You were grateful for her.
You sighed into the receiver. “Thanks, babe, I’ll let you know what happens either way”. You hung up and grabbed some toilet paper to dab at the corners of your eyes. You knew you’d need an extra minute to compose yourself as you faced the truth.
He’s not coming, he’s not texting me back, he probably regretted setting the date which is why he put the reservation in my name, I won’t be hearing from him again. Just pay your tab, smile, and leave. You got this.
7:52 PM
Checking your appearance in the mirror one last time you let out a final sigh and push open the door back to the dining room. Your walk to your table begins to slow when you notice someone is sitting at your table. A rather tall, unfamiliar someone.
Did the waiter really give away the table? I’ve been gone all of 7 minutes! What do I even say to this stranger? Should I just grab my bag and go? Hopefully it’s still there.
Your final steps towards your seat are nervous and uneven. The man in the chair opposite yours must’ve heard you and he faces you. You’re struck with an unfamiliar but extremely handsome face. The look of surprise must be tangible because he laughs and slight wrinkles form at the edges of his eyes. Who the fuck is this guy? Well he hasn’t stolen my purse so there’s that.
“I-” You lean over to grab your purse when you’re cut off mid-apology.
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart, you know how it is at work. Sit down, I ordered a bottle of wine for the table”. The man said.
You sat down slowly and felt so stiff and uncomfortable in the chair. Were you being pranked? Was this part of some very elaborate joke? Before you could ask any of those questions the man reached across the table and grabbed your hand.
“If you could just hold my hand and be quiet, that would be nice” He said as his thumb grazed your knuckles. You were slightly stunned by his boldness. You complied, if only out of shock and hoped he’d explain himself a little better or let you go in time for you to make an exit.
He leaned in closer to you, to anyone else it would’ve looked like an intimate moment during any normal date. He looked you in the eyes while he kept hold of your hand and you realized how warm he was, how clear his eyes were. You took a deep breath through your nose and tried to play it cool.
“I’ve been at the bar for a while now, it seems like whichever idiot decided to stand you up made a grave mistake.” Your brows pinched together and he continued, “I was with a friend talking business but he left and you look like you needed to be saved from the incident so here I am. James Barnes, but you can call me Bucky.”
You were unsure what to do with the information just given to you. Yes, it would’ve been embarrassing to pay your tab and leave alone after sitting there for almost an entire hour by yourself, but it was also embarrassing that this man had noticed and you certainly didn’t need anyone looking at you like some damsel in distress.
You caught yourself from scoffing completely and schooled your features. “I… appreciate that you’d do that for me but I don’t want anyone’s sympathy, especially not a date.” You tried to pull away when his hand gently squeezed yours.
“Please- I- I didn’t mean to make it sound like I’m doing this out of pity. Whatever happened here is unfortunate, yes. But you’re also very beautiful and you’re here by yourself so why not ‘shoot my shot’ as I believe the kids are saying these days? Think of me like a stand-in for the other guy, but y’know, better” he replied playfully.
A very brief moment of contemplation was solidified by your lack of notifications on your phone. Why not? He’s good looking and he’s doing you a favor.
You had to at least afford a small chuckle at that. “So ‘Bucky’, huh? Well I don’t have any cool nicknames but you can call me by my first name.” You gave it to him and he repeated it back to you, a wry smile on his face.
8:05 PM
Still no texts from him but you did text Wanda to tell her everything worked out and there’d be details to come. She’d go into full on mama bear mode if you hadn’t updated her.
“So, Bucky, what do you do? Do you live here in Manhattan?” You asked before taking a sip of your wine (which you didn’t dare check the price of per bottle).
“Brooklyn, actually, but a lot of my business is here. Have you heard of Buchannan hospitality?” He asked.
Your brain snagged itself on that name. That sounds familiar? Where have I seen that? Oh wait! Didn’t you see him in the Forbes ‘30 under 30’ list last year?
You’d meant to answer him but unfortunately all that came out was a confused “Forbes?” at which he laughed a little bit and nodded.
“Yeah you might’ve seen me there. I own some hotels and lounges around Manhattan and Brooklyn. What do you do?” He had brushed off his accolades so quickly, wanting instead to know about you, this random girl that had been stood up.
Shit, your mid-level marketing job doesn’t stand up to this in the least. You took a sip of the wine and answered him, explaining you were second in command of your small company’s marketing department.
He seemed genuinely intrigued and you two ended up talking business and swapping office and university disaster stories until the main course arrived. You dug into your meal, savoring the taste and relishing in the unusual turn of events.
8:47 PM
The plates have been cleared away and the wine glasses refilled. Bucky was proving to be great company and as oddly as it started you were grateful to be sitting here with him. You’d nearly forgotten about your would-be date and decided to check your phone one last time.
You had 11 unread texts, 10 of them from Wanda wanting a play-by-play and one of them from the man that had stood you up. You opened it and sighed. ‘Can’t make it tonight, baby, promise to make it up to you soon’.
You scoffed to yourself. He’s not gonna say where he’s been? Or even say sorry? Douche.
You put your phone away and looked back up to Bucky who was eyeing you with playful curiosity.
“Lemme guess, that was the guy who was supposed to be seeing you’s sorry ass excuse followed by a flimsy apology” He said as he drank from his water glass.
“You’re 1 for 3. It was him but he didn’t apologize or try to explain himself. Should’ve known when he put the reservation under my name and not his that something might be up and when he wasn’t there on time.” You said more to yourself than to Bucky.
“What’s his name?” Bucky asked.
“His name’s Brock Rumlow,” Bucky’s expression changed just slightly at this. “I think he works at some firm in the financial district. We only ever went out the once before this so I don’t really remember.” You explained. “What? What’s that look for? Please don’t tell me you know him”.
“Sorry to say that I do. Sorry to say I know his wife too” He said a little more quietly.
You felt humiliated all over again, the same feelings that you experienced in this very seat not an hour ago still had you by the gills it would seem.
Bucky reached for your hand again, running the pads of his thumb across the ridges of your knuckles in an attempt to calm you.
“I’m sorry sweetheart, I didn’t mean to make you upset, but you definitely ought to know that Rumlow is no one that deserves your time” Bucky said in earnest.
His words were nice but you’d need some time to get over this embarrassment on your own. In the meantime, you really were enjoying Bucky’s company so you decided to let it distract you.
Bucky flagged down a waiter, signaling him to bring the check. He took one glance at it and set his card inside. As you reached for the bill with your own card in hand he gave it to the waiter before you could even get a peek. He was so nonchalant when he looked at you.
“Don’t even think about it. So tell me, is the night over or are you game to spend a little more time on me?” He asked. This is the second time he’d been dominant but kind in one breath. You weren’t entirely sure how you felt but you didn’t dislike it.
If you went home you’d just be wallowing in your own self pity, or you’d go to Wanda’s and do it but if you go with Bucky you could delay that feeling for a bit longer. Out with a stranger it is.
“Where to?” You asked him.
9:59 PM
A private booth on the top floor of what he said was one of his favorite lounges turned out to be where to. You were relieved to find there was no dancing, as you had two left feet and half a bottle of wine by now. When you got to the booth you stuck with water, knowing you’d need to get yourself home.
Bucky had insisted on one glass of champagne ‘to chance encounters’ he’d said. You agreed but just one. You found yourself closer to him while you talked, your knees touched and his hand found its way to your leg. It didn’t dare to move higher up, just staying there like a comforting weight almost while you conversed.
You were rambling on about the time you and your cousin took your dad’s car for a joyride when you were 14. You were laughing the whole thing off when you realized he wasn’t laughing with you. You had worried for a moment that you’d bored him when you saw the soft yet intense look in his eye and tilted your head with curiosity.
“You’re very beautiful, you know that right?” He didn’t let you answer as he shifted closer. “I’d like to kiss you, is that alright with you?”
Oh. You were caught off guard by the abruptness of his question. Suddenly shy, all you could do was give a small nod and bite your lip in anticipation. His full lips were soft and almost as warm as his hands, which were holding you in an embrace. One of your hands had made their way to his hair and one on the outside of his lower thigh. You sighed as you kissed him back.
It was soft but insistent, things became a little more passionate as you swiped your tongue into his mouth and you both let out a small moan. You didn’t want to stop kissing Bucky, it just felt right.
He finally broke the kiss as one of his hands still rested at the nape of your neck. You were breathless, this man had kissed the daylights out of you. If he could do that with his tongue imagine what else he could do with it. You were both panting softly, sorting through what to make of things and where to go from here.
“I don’t know about you, but I wanna keep doing that, but this might not be the best place for it. You can say no if you want to, and you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, but I’d love to take you home and treat you right” He said with unwavering eye contact.
Well how on Earth could I say no to that even if I wanted to? Wait doesn’t he live in Brooklyn?
“Let’s go back to mine, probably closer” You said. He nodded in agreement and sent a text to his driver to come pick you both up.
10:40 PM
You did indeed find out what else that tongue of his could do, you were finding out right now. He had made you cum once from his tongue alone already but he added to thick fingers and started pumping them into you, making a scissoring motion that hit you just right. You arched your back and pushed his face in deeper as you cried out, signaling your second orgasm.
Completely drunk in the afterglow of it, you wanted to keep this feeling forever. You wanted to show him what you could do too. You got up albeit with a little shakiness and hovered over him. You kissed his neck and slid your hand down to meet his groin. He was still in his briefs and you pulled the elastic band down with ease.
His cock sprang free and you had to hide the slight surprise you felt looking at the sheer size of him. You were always told you were good in bed so time to really put yourself to the test. You kissed your way down to his pelvis and your hand started working him. Staring back up at him you maintained eye contact while you kissed the dab of pre-cum that pooled at the head of his dick.
He shuddered but you kept staring at him, and in what you have to say was a pretty proud moment for you, you held his gaze while you took him slowly and in one go. You closed your eyes and moaned, feeling him in the back of your throat.
“Shit, oh my god. Are you gonna…?” He was lost for words so you decided to answer him by getting to work. You started slowly, up and down, letting yourself get used to his size and reminding yourself to breathe through your nose and stay relaxed.
His moans were growing louder and his breathing heavier, you knew he was close and you were wondering if he was going to let you finish him. You got your answer when he pulled you off of him by the hair.
“As bad as I want you to finish what you started, I wanna feel you first.” He panted.
“So what’s stopping you?” You asked playfully. A small shriek escaped you as he flipped you under him. He lined himself up with your entrance and thrust in slowly. You could tell he was using a lot of restraint but that was quickly forgotten as you remembered how big he was. You suddenly appreciated the slow pace.
As he became fully sheathed inside of you you let out a loud moan that was quickly silenced by his lips on yours. A few more small thrusts and he was nearly fucking your cervix. You felt unbelievably full.
“Had no idea how talented that mouth was of yours, doll. Trying to make me cum without getting to fuck you though? Now that’s just cruel. I think you need to pay for that, don’t you?” He asked playfully as his thrusts became a little harder and forceful.
You could only nod and moan as he picked up his pace. Your hands clung to his shoulders for dear life and you whimpered and keened while he railed you into your mattress. Finally getting used to the feeling you reached down to play with your clit.
“Did I say you could touch yourself?” He asked in between grunts.
Your eyes rounded and you shook your head.
“I wanna be the one to touch you. Make you cum. Only me.” He forced out as he replaced your fingers with his. He made tight, quick circles around your clit but didn’t let up on his pace as he fucked you closer and closer to a third orgasm.
“Your pussy’s making it fuckin’ impossible for me to hold out any longer, need you to cum, sweetheart. Cum all over my fuckin’ dick.” His words sent you right over the edge and you did as you were asked.
Not two seconds later he cried out and emptied himself inside of you, sending a few final pushes into you before taking himself out and dropping down on his side.
You leaned over and kissed him with what little breath you two had left. Your sweat mixed together but you didn’t mind.
His hands provided that comforting weight as he brought one to your shoulder and the other to your hip. He kissed the tip of your nose and watched you begin to drift off to sleep. He could probably use the rest himself and decided to close his eyes for a bit.
9:30 AM
You woke up in a half empty bed, but before you could let yourself be too disappointed you heard the sound of your shower turning off. You padded down to the bathroom and opened the door to find Bucky toweling off. He gave you a lopsided grin.
“Good mornin’, I would’ve asked you to join me but you looked so peaceful I didn’t wanna wake you.” He explained. “If you’re not sick of me, do you maybe wanna grab some breakfast?”
You shook your head and reached past him to turn the shower back on.
“No way. I make the best pancakes and as a thank you for everything last night, I insist on making some for you.” You smiled up at him, hopeful he’d agree.
“Well I hope you know what you’re up against, I’m a very insatiable man.” He joked back.
You hit him with a washcloth and laughed. “Oh believe me I know. Gimme 15 and I’ll be right out.”
He nodded and closed the door behind him. You let your mind wander back to last night as you washed off the sweat that lingered from the night before.
10:15 AM
You set down two plates stacked mile-high with pancakes and bacon. You held your coffee mug up to his and clinked against it.
“To chance encounters” You said with a smile.

I think here the real action starts. Next chater will introduce our sexy antagonist!
A series in which Chisaki Kai goes through therapy!
A month has passed. Second month of his sentence, first month of his… therapy. Ew. Thirty hours spent with Nao. Thirty hours and he still didn’t feel like he was any closer to leaving this wretched place. It was annoying, frustrating. Maddening even.
“Why here?” Chisaki looked at Nao, who just entered the meeting room. It was a small, light room with a table and two chairs inside, everything attached to the ground. They met here for the first time, when Chisaki decided to join the program.
“Well, hello to you too.” Nao stood by the table and looked at the guards. They looked at him, nodded just slightly and left the room. Chisaki heard the sound of a locker. “I couldn’t bring sharp and chemical objects to your cell so I requested this room for today.”
“What?”
“There’s an evaluation tomorrow, I figured you’d like to look… less like a junkie.”
“A junkie?” Chisaki made an offended face and watched Nao take stuff out of his bag. Scissors, shaving cream, a razor and a small mirror, then some other hygienic stuff. The last was a towel, a sprinkler and a bottle of water. “You think I’ll let you touch me while holding those?”
“Don’t worry, I used to do it and I shave every morning. You’re in good hands.”
“I doubt that.”
Nao laughed and took the mirror in his hands. He showed it to Chisaki. Kai flinched.
The man in the mirror looked nothing like him. Chisaki knew he spent two months here already and the amount of hygiene he received was frighteningly minimal, nothing more than some tiny help with his showers. No one cut his hair or cared enough to shave him. But he didn’t realize he looked that bad.
His hair was wavy when it got too long and he hated that. It was reaching his eyebrows, it was standing all around his head and it was just crazy. Not to mention looking dry from the shitty shampoo they used in Tartarus. His facial hair never grew too fast but two months without taking care of it left him with his chin and upper lip covered in ugly, untended stubble. The circles under his eyes were so dark he looked like he put mascara on and he had obvious bags under them. His skin looked pale and gritty, his lips were chapped and bitten and he couldn’t be sure but it looked like his cheeks sank.
He really looked like a junkie.
Chisaki turned his head away from the reflection. Nao put the mirror down and looked at him.
“Monthly evaluation is normal for the red program. Rei comes with the assigned counselor and they talk with the inmate about their progress. But your case is special. Besides me and Rei there’s gonna be a government psychologist and Tartarus warden in here. She tried to move them at least to the next month but couldn’t do much.”
“Why would they be here?” Kai didn’t look back at Nao, still thinking about his terrible state. Nao noticed but didn’t change the topic.
“Well, the psychologist will be here to evaluate if there's a sense with continuing the program. The warden is just a bitch and she’s trying to cancel it all. Rei’s not happy about it because it was just a month after all, there’s no way anyone could make progress this fast. They’re just trying to put us in the losing position, since your success would put them in a bad light. You know, politics.” Chisaki looked at him. Nao smiled at the younger man. “But me and Rei will still protect you, don’t worry. You just need to help us a little.”
“And my look is important because?”
“Your look?” Nao looked over the stuff he brought and chuckled. “It’s not. I just assumed you would feel more confident if someone took care of it.”
“That’s... nice.”
“I know. I can be so heroic, right?” Nao laughed. Kai just bit over his lip. “So I’ll start from your hair, okay? Oh, right, I’d forgotten.” The older man dug into his bag again and took a disinfecting fluid. He splashed it over his gloves and smeared around. Kai, seeing that, snorted.
“You didn’t have to. It’s not like anyone here cares about it.”
“I wanted to.” Nao shook his hands to dry them fully. “And I’m not everyone. Okay, let’s see, I’m gonna touch your head now.”
Kai nodded and straightened, leaning against the backrest. Nao stood behind him and touched the top of his head.
His first instinct after being touched was to get away. Chisaki flinched and Nao quickly took his hand away. Kai swallowed and again leaned against the backrest.
“I’m fine. It was just a reflex.”
“Then I’m continuing.”
“Mhm.”
When the hand returned on the top of his head the touch was softer. Nao petted his head slightly, making Kai feel a little stupid and embarassed, but he endured it anyway. Besides feeling dumb, having his hair played with felt welcomed. And he knew why.
Nao took a small brush he had with himself as well and started brushing Kai’s hair. He was slow and delicate and Chisaki would never think a hero could be like that towards someone of his sort. But then he reminded himself about the other day, about what Nao told him and something weird took over his mind.
“You like it short, right?”
“What?”
“Your hair. Do you like it short? It was always very short on the pictures I saw of you.”
“Yeah.” Chisaki blinked and frowned. “What pictures of me did you see?”
“Oh, you know.” Nao took the sprinkler and the scissors and began working on shortening Kai’s hair. “School pictures, some pics of your time in yakuza, the mug shot. It’s surprising how much intel can be gathered about one person.”
“You saw my school pictures?”
“Yep. You didn’t change that much. You still have these adorable, chubby cheeks! Well, had them before Tartarus.”
“I didn’t.” Chisaki could feel his ears warming up.
“You did!” Judging by the chuckle Nao noticed his blush. “I’m not teasing you, I really think so. You’re a handsome man in general and the cheeks and soft freckles only add to that. And oh, your lashes. They’re so pretty.”
Chisaki only hummed, wishing to be able to control his blush. It was spreading over his face and neck and it was making him even more embarrassed and it was becoming an endless circle. He knew he was handsome. He never had anyone tell him that.
Nao spared him by shutting up. The strands of wetted hair were falling around and it was surprisingly quiet. With Nao around it was never quiet.
“Oh. Fuck.”
“...what was that?” A finger trailed the bottom of Kai’s skull and the man shivered. He shook his head and turned it to look at Nao. He looked guilty. “What did you do?”
“It’s gonna grow back, don’t worry!”
“What did you do?” repeated himself Kai. He wanted to touch the back of his neck but couldn’t, so he only kept glaring daggers at the other man.
“My hand slipped just a little bit. I’ll be more careful now!”
It took Chisaki a lot of self control to not scream. But then he reminded himself how he looked. How a batch of uneven hair was way better than that. He knew it would irk him to no end though.
“At least don’t screw up the front,” he grumbled.
“You have my word!”
He did the front too short. It wasn’t a screw up per se but it wasn’t perfect as well. Yet Chisaki took it with a lot of relief, looking into the mirror and seeing his hair back to normal. The only thing left…
Chisaki glared at Nao. He was looking at the razor with that creepy smile that Kai got used to but still found worrying. Especially when Nao was holding a razor that he intended to bring very close to Kai’s face. It wasn't even the fact that Chisaki didn't trust Nao to not slice his neck while shaving him. What if his hand slipped again?
"Could you sit on the table?" Nao looked at him and put the razor down. "I think this way's gonna be more comfortable." Kai eyed the razor and Nao followed his sight. "Hey, don't worry! You'll be fine. We can take a break though?"
"We don't have to." Chisaki stood up and looked at the table. Without arms he couldn't lift himself to sit on it.
"Okay then. I'll lift you."
"Lift?" Chisaki looked at Nao, not knowing what the other man was planning. Nao came closer, grabbed him on his sides and easily lifted him up. Kai made a surprised sound before being sit down on the table. He looked Nao in the face and felt anger rising in his abdomen. "What the fuck?" If he could, he would smack this man across his annoying face. Instead he just kicked his tight.
"Ouch! Hey! I just helped you! I don't think you could get up on your own."
"I would figure something out on my own.” For a moment Nao was looking at Kai, massaging the kicked spot. Finally, he smiled. “What are you smiling for?”
“Oh nothing, just… it’s rude to kick someone who’s about to shave your face.” Nao chuckled, showing his teeth. Kai couldn’t hold back a flinch, suddenly painfully aware of his vulnerable position. But just when he felt an anxious feeling down his stomach Nao stopped smiling. “Hey, don’t look like I’m about to hit you or something,” he said. Kai could swear he’s going crazy because Nao’s voice got softer. After that discussion the other day he didn’t use this voice anymore. “I’m not gonna go smacking you around just because you showed some backbone. I’m just gonna give you a funny mustache.”
“A what?” And, just like that, Chisaki felt the tension leave his shoulders. Instead he showed great resentment. “You wouldn’t dare.”
He dared. Nao cleaned his face with a damp towel first, put some shaving cream on and shaved him, leaving a stupid, long mustache under his nose. He got rid of it soon after but promised to get the record from cameras afterwards, which Chisaki didn’t appreciate. What he appreciated was the feeling of his face, clean, shaved and covered with an oil that smelled pretty nice. That, slightly, lifted his mood.
Nao was packing the stuff he brought back to the bag. Kai, back on the chair, was looking down at the table, where the mirror was laying. He watched his reflection and wondered how someone could change so much in barely two months. Sure his hair was short again and he didn’t have a beard anymore but the man looking back at him still seemed like a stranger. It wasn’t new to him, to not recognize himself but he thought he would never again feel this way.
Chisaki didn’t see a look that Nao sent his way before taking the mirror. Kai looked at him and he looked even more tired than normally, despite his face being fresh.
“I don’t understand,” he said. Nao looked at the mirror and back at him.
“You know, Tartarus diet doesn’t belong to the healthiest ones and you barely eat anyway. Also the lack of sun, poor hygiene and stuff can change a person pretty quickly.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about.” Chisaki shook his head. Nao, curious, hid the mirror and sat on the opposite chair. “The stuff you told me. How could you become a hero after what they did to you?”
Chisaki lifted his head and looked at Nao. The counselor was surprised for a moment, then smiled.
“I’m not a hero though.”
“What?”
“I have a criminal past, no one would give me a pro license. My quirk use is also prohibited except for special situations, which later requires a tone of paperwork. Thankfully, my quirk isn’t something I can control so I can always use that excuse.” Nao leaned on the table with his arms, watching Kai closely. Chisaki looked like he didn’t understand something.
“You told me you’re a hero!”
“I did?” Nao made a dumb face that made Kai want to hit him. Then the counselor shrugged. “Maybe I slipped. I’m not an official one, I enjoy helping people though.” He smiled. Chisaki chewed on something before speaking up.
“You’re still on their side,” he said finally, this time not looking at Nao.
“Their side?”
“Heroes. If you weren't, you wouldn’t sit on that side of the table.”
Nao sighed and leaned back against the backrest.
“Their side, our side, villains, heroes. All of them are the same. I don’t want to stand on one side of a barricade and be forced to fight the other because that’s when other people get hurt.” Nao smiled, seeing how Chisaki peeked at him. “A child, caught in between, will come back in ten years and hurt the next person in line. No matter if they become a hero or a villain. And it’s gonna happen over and over and over again. So there’s no side, there are just people that got deeply hurt and need help. They use that pain and create the sides but in reality they’re all the same.”
“How about those that kill because they like to. How about quirks that can only be used for killing, nothing else?”
“Some people are just assholes. They’re between heroes and villains and regular citizens.” Nao sent a stern look toward Chisaki. “Is that why you did what you did? Did you like to hurt others?”
For a moment Kai was quiet. Then he slowly shook his head.
“It’s… difficult to explain. Sometimes it was enough to hear a wrong word about my boss and I couldn't hold back my anger. When someone touched me accidentally I couldn’t hold back. It’s the same now, when they have to touch me it angers me but now…”
“Now you can’t do anything about it?” Kai looked away, chewed on his lip and obviously forced himself to look back at Nao. “Is it like that with me too?”
“No. You ask.”
“I respect your boundaries.” Chisaki nodded and opened his mouth but then shut it down. Nao waited.
“When you are a part of Yakuza you have to kill or torture people. It’s not a case of liking or disliking it. It’s a… a part of the job. And for me it wasn’t just a job.”
This time Nao nodded. He could understand it.
“There was an accident you were involved in, soon before you were caught.” Nao dug into his mind after the file. “A few thieves ran into you. Now we know that you used your quirk on them just to restore them back, in better condition. They even decided to leave the criminal path. This is something I wonder about a lot, why did you keep them alive?”
“Ah. They didn’t attack me or my boss but annoyed me. They didn’t… deserve to die.”
“Did you find enjoyment in killing people when they wronged you or your boss?” Chisaki hesitated. He looked at Nao, frowned and wanted to speak up but Nao interrupted him. “You don’t have to answer right now if you don’t know.”
“I- okay.”
Hearing Chisaki agree to something so openly was new but expected. Nao didn’t think he could just know the answer right away. And, honestly, he was glad Chisaki didn’t.
“I have… one more question that bugs me.” Nao scratched his chin. “They met you and immediately decided to change their lives. How?
“I just fixed them.” Kai shrugged. “They were sick with their powers and couldn’t see further than stealing some money.”
“You could do that with your quirk?” Kai shrugged again. “Amazing.”
“What?”
“Your quirk. It was amazing.”
“It was deadly.”
“Sure, but think about it. You could change someone’s life or-” suddenly Nao’s eyes darkened,” or cure any sickness.”
“That’s true but it was always painful.”
“I think someone dying from cancer would be fine with some pain.” Nao’s eyes went back to normal. He even smiled. “But instead you decided to use it that way.” Chisaki looked conflicted and sad so Nao sighed. He didn’t want to push him, not before the evaluation. “Okay, I’m gonna change the topic, we still need to talk about tomorrow.”
Kai nodded, doing a terrible job at trying to hide his relief.
“It's going to be difficult.” Nao immediately got more serious. “They may ask you private questions. They will try to make you snap or say something so they could shut the program down.” Chisaki frowned but kept looking at Nao. “You need to work with us. With me and Rei.”
“And how am I supposed to do that?”
“Lie? Oh wait, no, it’s unethical for me to tell you to lie. Uh. Don’t tell them the whole truth?”
“Like I didn’t know that much before.” Chisaki rolled his eyes.
“Not like that. They can’t figure out you’re doing this to get out and see your boss. They have to believe you truly want to change, that you saw the wrong in your actions and redemption is your only goal yadda yadda.” Nao broke his serious expression when Chisaki snorted. But then Kai seemed to deflate, hunched on his seat and looked down on the table.
“What if I can’t do that? What if they’re going to figure me out?”
“They won’t.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because I believe in you. And you should believe in me!” Nao smiled wide and creepy and somehow reassuring. Chisaki realized, with a sinking feeling in his stomach, he didn’t just get used to that smile. He enjoyed it.
Shoving the feeling deep down, where no one could dig, not yet, Kai decided to trust Nao at least this one time.

Finally
MaStar; All throughout their life, Black Star has always brushed Maka's bangs behind her ears. He goes from doing it out of necessity to want. AO3.
Written for Liz’s Birthday 2020 ily @happyisahabit
Maka was a teeny thing as a child, but Black Star guessed that all children started out small. He was merely a year older and an entire inch shorter than her, a fact that he was reminded of constantly whenever he visited his neighbor’s yard.
The only solace he had were her own words. She said, “My papa said boys get a growth squirt when they are older!”
He stared at her. “You mean ‘spurt’?”
“That is what I said. ‘Squirt,’” Maka’s four-year-old tongue betrayed her. She used her palm to brush her bangs from her eyes, indignant.
He helped her because his fingers were more developed and precise. After watching Maka’s mom for a while, he knew that Maka liked her hair tucked behind her ears.
She tried to shake him away, but stopped when her hair fell back, messy once again. She threw him a glare as if he were the sole cause.
“Stop moving, you baby,” Black Star said, taking a finger to push her long bangs aside. He moved the strands carefully to prove that he could, going slowly and deliberately to make sure that she knew.
This time, she allowed him because it needed to be done. Mama wasn’t around to do so for her, but Maka wasn’t pleased.
----------
They were older than before and Black Star had become well practiced in fixing Maka’s hair. Whether they were fingerpainting or pursuing other art projects, Maka’s sleek half-Asian hair never stayed perfectly in her pigtails. The colorful elastic bands always slipped from their place, away from her head. He liked to fling them away between his index and thumb into the grass where she couldn’t find them.
She insisted on having her hair cut just before they worked with play-doh. After all, Maka wanted to look her best when they played house— and by house, she meant domestic warfare. From her keen, eight-year-old hands, she sculpted excellent figures of a family by her standards, but the new length of her bangs made them hard to manage. With her fingers smelly from the clay, she refused to touch her dress nor her hair.
Black Star didn’t have the same reservations. He put down the little model sword that he was making for her… blob… and wiped his hands with the wet towelette that her mom trained her to keep around.
“Look here,” he commanded, leaving the previously folded cloth as a squeezed ball on the table where he found it.
Maka already knew what he wanted with her, because he assumed that he knew what she wanted. “No. There’s probably still play-doh under your nails.”
“I cleaned it.”
She glanced over. “Then why is there still blue under it?”
He ignored her and told her again. The second time, he sounded more whiny and impatient. “You know it’s bothering you.”
Sighing, Maka said, “It is, but I can fix my hair later.”
“Let’s just do it now.” Black Star already leaned over to handle a pigtail, knowing that she would allow it. “You’ll just get mad if you wait.”
Ultimately, Maka had to drop what she was working on and agree with him. She moved her head to face forward as muscle memory trained her to do, and she held onto the stool with both hands between her thighs, ensuring that she wouldn’t move during the fix-up. It rocked slightly since the legs were uneven with the kitchen floor, but Black Star didn’t notice the small clicking sounds it made.
Instead, he undid her band and tightened a loop closer to the back of her head rather than to the side as she liked it. He finished it off lower and by her neck, the position promising steadiness. After doing the other side in the same way, he pulled out two clips from the front pocket of his overalls in the shape of butterflies.
Seeing her protest, he explained, “Come on. You’ve been itching your forehead with your arm all day. You can’t have it behind your ears.”
Blunt ends of her hair would do that, but she tried a different approach. “You have the purple and yellow barrettes! Those are opposite colors. I don’t want to wear that.”
“Colors don’t have opposites, squirt.”
“If you remember from the Blue’s Clues computer game we used to play, you would remember that there are,” she scowled. “Purple and yellow make brown, and blue and red make purple so that leaves out yellow, which makes it—“
“Hold still,” Black Star said, parting her bangs in half and sliding the yellow of the pair in place. “Ok, other side.”
He moved onto her right side, only for her to swivel her neck to the other side, effectively showing the crown of her head. Black Star paced around to reach, but Maka moved again, making a small sound that resembled a “hmph.”
“It’s just going to get loose if you keep doing that.”
She didn’t answer immediately, but eventually admitted quietly, “It already did.”
Black Star laughed when she twirled around properly so he could see her. Lo and behold, the little butterfly did droop from its own weight down to her temple.
Promising, he said while he finished, “I’ll get better colors next time, Maks. You keep leaving these ones at my house, though.”
“The polka dot ones should still be in your room, I think.”
He bopped the back of her head to let her know that he was done and returned to his seat, glad that she didn’t notice the small blue clumps of clay in her hair.
----------
Maka’s hair curled where she kept it behind her ear, but the rest of it was straight and fine. It still grew tangled when the wind was too strong and hard to tame in the morning, but she only played with the ends by her shoulders when she was nervous. During PE class, she was flighty.
She picked stray strands that frizzed away, rubbing them between her fingers as she watched the other teams’ ten minute game. Her’s had a moment to rest before they faced off in the next rotation, but for some reason, she didn’t feel at ease, nor did her heart seem to settle its discomfort.
It was nerves, she decided as she watched Black Star’s group face off their opponents in handball. Any one would feel the same if they knew how much it hurt to be on the receiving end of his throws.
He was an awkward size. His neck was too long. His gym shirt reached below his waist. His feet were too small for the oversized shoes he had to wear before they were eventually too tight.
Middle school was not kind to tween boys, but neither was it for tween girls.
She was crossing her legs because of the darkened hair growing on her shins and hated the training bra that she had to wear despite not showing any signs of growth. In the locker room, she swears an eighth grader was showing off black lace under her shirt while rumors of a sixth grader wearing a thong spread like a virus.
Who knew what else they talked about in the boy’s room?
Though Black Star was a grade above hers, they had a joint seventh and eighth grade class during their PE period. It was fine to her— she could keep up with the best of them after all— but the girls were always hoping to get the attention of their counterparts, even his.
Boy-crazy, Maka rolled her eyes, sure that she wasn’t one of them.
The two classmates who sat beside her on the pavement giggled behind their hands. Maka listened in to their conversation as a fellow girl, but didn’t join their remarks about how each boy ‘scored’ on a one to ten scale. However, once they got to Star, Maka leaned in closer out of curiosity.
They judged him on his athletic abilities and how much hair gel he used compared to the other boys in his grade. Though he wasn’t going to win ‘Best Hair’ for the yearbook’s Hall of Fame, he had a running chance at winning ‘Class Clown.” He ran around with a catchphrase and got along with most people. By all accounts, even if he got a C in History and English, he was still a seven when most others were a six or five.
The girls asked Maka if she agreed, but she feigned disinterest and said that growing up around him had desensitized her. Not only that—he was still her height. But they were undeterred, attempting to convince her with a few other points that almost seemed like they had already previously thought their arguments.
Black Star was a team player, they said, but Maka countered that he liked being the best of the bunch. He does everything in his power to help people out, they said, but Maka referred to the times he made situations worse, not better.
Somewhere along the way, Maka agreed that she enjoyed his company somewhat, just as he approached and overheard just that one bit.
“You talkin’ ‘bout me, Maks?” he cocked his head to the side, foam ball tucked under his arm.
Maka heard a few giggles and was instantly irritated. The biases that those girls had were laughable themselves, but that wasn’t the issue; it was that Black Star was painfully oblivious to how annoying he was.
On the curve of his rounded cheeks, there was a developing lump of a pink pimple that rose when he smiled. Her eyes were drawn to it unwittingly— the pimple, not the smile.
“You wish,” she retorted, taking hold of his hand to help herself onto her feet. “We were just talking about how we’re going to crush your team.”
While she looked behind her as part of a girl code confirmation, the both of them gave each other a quick glance before dissolving back into teeters. Of course Maka would be the only female on their co-ed team who was interested in doing that, she realized belatedly.
Oblivious, as always, Black Star handed her the ball and announced that he had won their most recent victory. Her team would be just another one for the scoreboard.
Before she could turn away and ignite her competitive streak, he stopped her. He kindly said, “Your bangs are stuck to your sweat, squirt,” hand moving to correct it.
Fully aware of their audience and the shuffling of students on the blacktop, Maka stopped his hand from brushing back her hair, something she’d never done before. “I can do it myself.” And she did, walking away and ignoring the hurt he blatantly showed on his face.
Her team did not win the final round that day.
----------
On her graduation day, Black Star happily clapped as he watched Maka toss her cap into the air.
The summer evening was hot. He remembered his own being just as much. The orange and white robes were horrible school colors and trapped the heat under the folds. Even the stadium was devoid of a breeze, but the excitement of the graduates was unaffected.
Families began their way towards the center of the mass while a few kids separated away from their friends to push outwards. Sid texted Maka, ‘We’re going to the parking lot,” but Black Star knew that Maka wouldn’t see the message until she was cleared out by the security team.
Spirit cried into the flowers that he bought a day in advance; a few of the buds bloomed from the age while the rest did from the warmth. Mira patted him lightly on the shoulder and reminded him that they still had to take pictures, reaching into her fanny pack for a small bundle of tissues.
He blew his snot out loudly while Sid reminded Mira that she was equally a mess when Star graduated, too.
A good while after, Maka fumbled out with an array of ribbons and flower leis around her neck. It was clear she was looking for her decorated cap, but realized that it was forever lost like her bobby pins after prom. Upon seeing her family, Maka rushed with her arms open, uncharacteristically physically welcome, with her papa ready to meet her half way.
Black Star caught the flowers before they hit the ground, but Spirit paid no mind, crying all over again while Mira snapped pictures on her digital camera. Father and daughter stayed for a bit until Maka eventually pushed him away to hug the rest of her party, smiling widely with her family friends and eventually holding Black Star tightly around his middle.
“Congrats, squirt.”
He was finally taller than her. His chin rested easily on the top of her head, fitting nicely when she wanted to be close to him. They embraced long and soundly, rocking from side to side on their feet until Spirit blew his nose again.
Upon separating, Black Star handed Maka the flowers from Papa and joined the candy lei that previously hung from his arm with the rest of the celebratory gifts she had received throughout the night. Her sashes and tassels were drowned out by the weight. Even Sid gave her a lei decorated with carefully folded bills and kukui nuts.
“We have to recreate the picture we took last year!” Maka announced to Star, gesturing to Mira for help.
“First,” Mira said, “we need group photos.”
Sheepishly, Maka sobered down, hopeful for good shots to remember the day.
With her lowered energy, it gave Black Star the chance to really look at her. Maka wore her regalia proudly; the leis wrapped around her like a lion’s mane and made her look top heavy for once. She had her hair braided back to fit her now lost cap, and she was clearly sweating, not aware of it herself.
He absentmindedly reached to her head; the memory of doing so was dug too deeply for him to forget. He stopped just as she noticed, clenching his open hand into a fist to lower it, but Maka smiled and tilted her head towards him, familiarly. He hesitantly took a deep breath and continued slowly, just in case she changed her mind.
She didn’t.
He grazed her forehead with two fingers to tuck her sticky bangs behind her ear, clumsily but deliberately as though they were children. Maka was thankful for it, especially because she couldn’t reach her arms above her head due to her sleeves and her decor. She moved her head to the other side, naturally, wanting him to do the same again. Of course, Black Star relented, giving into the urge he had been fighting ever since he was still in school.
Sid broke the spell. “You look fine, Maks,” he assured. He held out his arm for a side hug while Spirit took his place on her left.
With her distracted, Black Star pulled out his last gift out of Mira’s tote bag that he had stowed away while everyone left the stadium. He had snuck into the center of the chaos while the other three left, following shortly after he claimed his prize. Because Maka had done it for him last year, he felt it was only right to return the favor.
Mira took the picture just at the right moment— when Star fitted Maka’s graduation cap on top of her head, complete with the tassel and all.
----------
Maka returned home for spring break. She was exhausted, half from her studies and half from her travel. Instead of properly setting up the futon in Star’s living room, she threw herself on top of the cushions in couch form, sighing deeply into the softness. There, she napped past her alarm and into the evening, not stirring when Star finally returned to his apartment after work.
Instead of going directly to college like many of their friends, he found employment in their local city. He never thought he’d be the type to like being stuck in one spot, close to where he grew up, but he took vacations and PTO often. Most of all, he visited Maka out of state and made sure that she always had a home away from home.
Black Star knew that she arrived close to noontime; he gave her permission to use the spare key that he mailed to her months ago when he moved in. What he didn’t expect was that her luggage was unpacked and laid as a tripping hazard at the front door. Seeing her head on the arm of the sofa, he wheeled in the suitcase into his room for her and took the chance to change into comfortable clothes.
Even after detouring to the bathroom, Maka was still fast asleep, comfortable and safe. She breathed heavily through her mouth, chest rising and falling, at peace. One hand rested on top of her stomach while the other hung from the edge of the couch, no doubt dropping after she turned off her alarm in her sleep.
She had a habit of doing that, Star remembered, amused. It was why she had to change the tune often and why keeping to a disciplined routine was important to her. In comparison, he had twelve alarms on his phone, each five minutes apart in order to slowly shake him awake. It drove her insane.
He decided to wake her up at six on the clock so they could grab dinner downtown. Easily, he touched her forehead and moved her bangs aside. He watched her movements carefully as she began to regain consciousness. Once she registered his face, she smiled and sat up slowly, yawning and rubbing her neck while she did.
“Fuck. You’re back already,” Maka said, voice cracked from sleep.
“It’s like six, Maks.”
“Welcome home.” She waved her hands quickly in place— jazz hands.
Star laughed, kneeling down at her level and propping his elbow on the cushion. His weight pressed down beside her. “You aren’t sleeping tonight with the nap you just had.”
“Keep me company, then. You’re good at all nighters.”
“I’ve gotten worse since you haven’t been around,” he admitted. Normally, Maka was rigid with her sleeping schedule. However when she was back, she spent as long as she could—every waking hour— at his side. “I did just have a full workday, so maybe you’ll just have to do it alone.”
She whined, “But, it’s tradition to stay up on the first night back!”
“Not if you cheated and snuck in an afternoon nap, squirt,” he grinned, resting his chin on his fist while she fell back against the armrest with a groan.
Maka had grown into her body just as Star had, and it was especially noticeable whenever they spent months apart at a time. When they reunited, sometimes, it was like he was looking at a whole new person— someone humbled and softened, challenged and forthcoming. Her clothes eventually changed to an adult look over the years, and she wore light makeup around her eyes.
There was a time when they fought bitterly over simple decisions, but later they learned to compromise and cherish. The days they could spend together were limited to stolen holidays because of Maka’s hectic schedule.
She was shy of twenty-three years old, already in grad school to earn her doctorate, while he wondered if he could keep up with her pace. He hoped he came across just a bit more mature in her eyes just the same.
Star began to play with her hair again, but along the way to the wisps, he spied just the smallest eyelash on her cheek. Using his thumb, he brushed it away, catching her attention.
He cleared his throat, continuing as though nothing had changed. “Let’s go, squirt,” he said. As he reached back to her bangs, she stopped him with a hand on his wrist.
Maka sat up quickly, revealing she was fully awake in that moment. She looked pained, her eyebrows scrunched in the middle, and she asked, “Blake, when will you treat me as a woman?”
He exhaled carefully. Treading lightly, he said, “Is this about the time I said you were like one of the bros?” He chuckled, “There’s no need to call me ‘Blake’ just for that.”
“No, that’s not what I meant,” she squeezed just a bit tighter. “You can’t be this dense.”
“Maka, you sound like you’re asking me—“ He saw the reminiscence of himself in her face— of a time before he knew to hide his emotions. “—about somethin’ else.”
She softly questioned, “What if I am?”
Star didn’t know when the shift completely transitioned themselves into uncertain territory. Maybe it was her first summer back as an undergrad, or maybe it was when they attended Senior Ball as each others’ date. Or maybe, just maybe, it was before even then.
Maka repeated the question in her head, unsure of how different it would sound to him. “Blake, am I a woman to you? Someone who will make you act as a man?”
“You’ve always been a woman,” he said, not thinking of the meaning behind his words, just that he was sure of what he felt.
When Maka sat up on the couch, fingers loose on his wrist, she was taller than he was. She looked down at him while he looked up, both aware of the closing distance between them.
“Then treat me like one,” she whispered, hand slipping down his arm.
He caught it in his, threading them together, joining their palms. “Should I? Can I?”
“You may,” her lips parted, hovering over him.
Star rose to his knees to cup her face, hand brushing her hair back behind her ears as he pulled her effortlessly towards him, kissing her lightly as she melted deep into his hold.
----------
Her hands tightened around the bouquet and she struggled to place one foot over the other on the way to her place. If Papa hadn’t been there to steady her, she would’ve fallen from weak knees some time ago. Speaking of which, Maka looked over to him.
She expected him to be emotional and wrecked. Instead, he stood proud, strength on his face and in arms. He could truly withstand the winds so long as it was for her sake, and so on her wedding day, he remained her pillar.
He asked if she was ready, and if she were being honest, the answer was no. Adrenaline flooded her system and she could hardly hear the cues. It was Spirit who willed her forward on time, up until she turned the corner to see Blake.
From then on, Maka walked to him— for him. She matched Papa’s pace perfectly, but her tunnel vision focused on her fiancé, soon-to-be-husband. Without her arm looped around Papa’s, surely, she would have already made her way to the altar much too early.
But if anything, it looked like Star wanted to go to her. He was on his toes, face relaxed with wonder. She was the only thing he could see, just as she only saw him. And once she reached him, he thanked her papa quietly, eyes never leaving her.
They could hardly listen to the ordained minister’s speech that welcomed their guests, and even worse, they stuttered on their vows when it became time to recite them. Both were much too nervous, giggling and promising silently to reread them privately later on.
When they were asked to repeat the joining words, the minister joked that it wouldn’t be difficult. The crowd laughed, but all awaited anxiously.
First it was Star. He recited, “I, Blake Barrett, take thee, Maka “Squirt” Albarn, to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward…”
Then it was Maka. She recited, “I, Maka Albarn, take thee, Blake “Black Star” Barrett, to be my wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward…”
And once they were done and the rings in their place, he swept the veil away from her face, just as he did with her bangs as children, and he kissed her, finally.

Little Black Dress - 2
In case you missed it: << Intro
Characters: Mark x Reader ft. Jackson, JB, & an OC
Genre: fluff, well at least this part is kind of fluffy
Warnings: None
Length: 3.2k
The taxi sped off into the night taking quick turns and sharp exits. The ride was quiet filled only by soft radio music, Mark looking out his window and you looking out yours. The silence between you and Mark was welcoming, almost like a short pause before the movie began, filled with anticipation and wonderment. The scene outside quickly changed from city skyline to rolling hills and open fields. In the dark you could pick out vaguely small houses in the distance separated by vast plots of land. The stars were slightly more visible now twinkling at you from above almost as if they were pointing to Mark’s secret destination. It felt like you had been in the taxi forever, glancing at the display of your phone, the bright screen illuminated the entire back seat flashing the time at you.
It was then that Mark glanced over smiling at you from the light of your phone. “Not trying to get Jess to rescue you, are you?” he joked,” Don’t worry we’re almost there.” You smiled at Mark as he turned back to face out his window. His side profile wasn’t easy to look away from, his sharp jaw angled just so that you could see the curvature of his face. The shadows from the light of the moon hid half his face from your view making him look like he had blended in with the night. A lurch in your stomach gave way to the anxious butterflies again and you pulled your arms in closer taking deep breaths. Your phone chirped lightly signifying a loss of cell signal as the taxi pulled to a stop.
The headlights beamed into the empty night, pointing slightly up at what looked like a trail. Mark popped his door open walking around the outside before meeting you on your side, opening the door for you. He stuck his hand out and you took it helping you get out of the car. Your feet were met with uneven ground and rocks and you stumbled a bit holding on to Mark for support. He kept you upright never letting go of your hand before pulling you out of the way and knocking on the taxi twice signaling the driver to leave.
“But wait, how are we supposed to get back?”
“Leave it all to me, princess,” Mark said beginning to tug you along. The gravel and dirt underneath your feet crunched as Mark led you toward the path winding up the side of a hill.
“Mark…I can’t,” you said pointing down at your heels. He looked puzzled for a moment before giving you a mischievous look.
“Hold on tight,” he said and without warning scooped you up into his arms causing you to instinctively wrap your arms around his neck. A small gasp left your lips as you noticed your face a mere inch or two from Mark’s. He licked his lower lip slowly to be sure you noticed before clearing his throat and hoisting you up to get a better hold on you.
“Up there we go,” he said pointing with his eyes.
“Wait can you carry me all the way up there?” you said eyes widening.
“Princess I can do anything as long as I have you right here with me,” he said back. You broke eye contact with Mark feeling your heart beat rapidly inside your chest only hoping Mark didn’t feel it too with your bodies pressed together. Together you started up the trail, Mark carrying you bravely like a prince rescuing his princess. Along the way up Mark filled the silence with his thoughts, talking about his firm belief in the accuracy of astrology, about his most crazy encounter with a client at the recording studio, and about his desire to make a difference in the world. The more Mark spoke the more you felt your heart warm towards him. How lovingly he spoke of his job and his dream to make a difference in the world broke down the defensive barrier you had shielded yourself with all while softening your heart. About halfway into the walk Mark paused and set you down on your feet.
“The ground is softer here, it’s mainly grass,” Mark said grabbing your hand again causing electric shocks to shoot up your arm and throughout your body. He towed you along weaving in and out of trees following the path only by the moonlight that shined overhead. It was then that Mark turned the focus of conversation on to you, asking about where you were from, what you did, what your interests and passions were in. You answered each question animatedly and excitedly telling Mark about how you grew up in a small city but moved for the change of pace, about how you were a fashion magazine editor, and about all the times you’ve volunteered abroad as part of relief programs and how you sang in the shower when you thought no one was listening. The more you talked the more Mark pulled you up to walk beside him, slowing his pace and swinging your intertwined hands back and forth.
With each new story to tell you saw his eyes gleam in awe and his broad smile made you more excited about the things you loved. Midway through your story about a small Vietnamese girl who had made you a flower crown from flowers in a local field, you heard a frog croak.
“Wow…,” you uttered almost at a complete loss for words. The scene before you was incredible. Encompassed by a large circle of trees was a beautiful and vast lake. The moon shined bright above casting light over the lake, lily pads and cat tails lined the edges, and docked along a rickety wooden platform was a little rowboat.
“Come on,” Mark said. His hand had slipped from yours without you noticing and he had begun to walk towards the little rowboat waiting for you at the makeshift dock. “Now give me your hand,” he said motioning for you to hop into the boat. He grabbed your clutch from you and tossed it onto a sturdy part of the dock before tossing his wallet, phone, and a set of keys with it.
“This isn’t ours though Mark, what if the person who owns this comes out and gets mad?”
He raised his brow in thought tapping his finger against his chin for a moment before replying,” You know, I don’t think the owners will be mad at all.” You hopped in feeling the boat shake as you grabbed the side to stable yourself. Taking a seat on the wooden bench Mark hopped in lightly and gracefully before he untied the boat pushing away from the dock. “Wanna help me row?” You nodded excitedly kicking your heels off and picking up a paddle down by your feet. You began to paddle in sync with Mark getting further and further from the platform. Mark flicked his paddle sending a splash of water over into your lap. You let out a yelp, eyes widening at your now wet dress.
He shrugged his shoulders giving you big puppy eyes before saying,” Oops, I don’t know how that happened.” His face broke in to the silliest grin. You huffed a breath of air moving the strands around your face before glancing down at the glistening water. An evil grin broke across your face before you made a scooping motion with your paddle dumping a lap full of water onto Mark. He stood up in surprise, arms thrown up looking down at you in bewilderment.
“Okay I splashed you barely, but I did not dump half the lake on you,” he chuckled.
Looking back up at him innocently you mimicked him, shrugging your shoulders before saying,” Oops, I don’t know how that happened.” Mark popped a tongue in his cheek scoffing at your mockery before sitting back down. Without even noticing it, you had reached a good distance from the wooden platform and the land. Mark kicked back opposite from you placing his paddle in his lap staring at you. He had untucked his dress shirt from his pants loosening the tie around his neck. You looked longingly at the dip of his collarbone connected to his neck, eyes making a trail from his jawline down abruptly to his wet shirt that clung to every curvature of his abs.
“Penny for your thoughts?” you asked moving to sit next to him on his side of the rowboat to avoid staring at him. He looked up at the sky lacing his fingers behind his head propping himself up.
“Just that I’m glad you’re having a good time, I was worried this would be too much and you’d get freaked out by it or something.” You glanced at him out of the corner of your eye before relaxing.
“This is perfect,” you began,” To be honest I haven’t been on many first dates, but this has been the best one by far.” His eye cracked open and he looked over at you smiling. Together you looked up at the stars as the boat made slow, lazy rotations pushed by the slight breeze of the night. Mark continued to ask his questions getting to know you: where you went to school, what your family was like, why fashion editing as a career. You answered each question in as much detail as possible pouring out everything to Mark.
“So then can I ask you another question,” Mark asked quietly.
“Shoot,” you said sitting up so that your back leaned against the side of the boat, turning to face him.
“Why is an amazing girl like you single?” You froze and your throat dried. Licking your lips a few times you glanced up at the sky blinking back tears. You felt the weight of the boat shift as Mark sat up straddling the bench directly across from you, moving closer so that his knee bumped yours.
“Hey no don’t cry, I’m sorry you don’t have to answer that,” Mark said grabbing your hand in his drawing small circles on your palm with his thumb.
“No, it’s okay it’s just,” you choked out fighting the tears with every fiber in your body,” My boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend I mean, dumped me a month ago and it didn’t end well like he kind of just left me. And we were together for two and a half years and…I am so sorry you don’t want to hear this.” You said wiping the tears that broke free of your resolve.
“Great I did it again,” you mumbled wiping at the tears that made their way down your cheeks.
“Did what?” Mark said cupping your cheek to swipe at the last tear falling down your face.
“I made the date weird or awkward or both,” you said quietly turning your face away from Mark. You had sniffled dabbing under your eyes with the pads of your fingers to dry up all the tears.
“Don’t be ridiculous Y/N, this is the best date I’ve been on in a long time and I’ve really enjoyed it with you. The entire night of us being together and all the little times you got flustered were insanely adorable, I couldn’t get enough of you which is why I poked some fun at you, but I’m so sorry if I made you feel like the night was going horribly because you’re honestly the most amazing girl.”
You looked back up at Mark eyes glistening in amazement. “And as for that other guy, screw him because thanks to him I get to be out on this beautiful night with this beautiful girl.” With his hand, still on your cheek he started to lean in and your eyes fluttered shut leaning in to meet him halfway. A sinking feeling hit your stomach and you felt the weight of the rowboat shift all onto one side until you were engulfed by water. The rowboat flipped and you were thrown into the water frantically trying to push your way to the surface as water found its way into your lungs. You felt a hand grab yours yanking you up and you gasped for air coughing out the water and struggling to breathe.
“Are you okay,” Mark asked with one arm extended above his head holding on to the boat for support, with his free arm he held you afloat.
Coughing out the last bits of water you regained your composure before blinking at him a few times,” Yeah, yeah I think I’m okay.”
Mark started laughing hysterically and you looked up noticing the rowboat was completely flipped making a little roof over your heads.
“I am so sorry,” Mark said between laughs,” I did not mean for that to happen but it was kind of funny.”
You began to laugh too, looking at Mark with his hair matted to his forehead only imaging how you must look to him. The laughter died down as quickly as it had started as Mark looked at you seriously for a second. A sudden lust filled his eyes as he pushed himself closer to you circling an arm around your waist as he pulled you in flush against him. “I actually think we were in the middle of something,” he said with a seductive growl to his voice.
Without giving you a second to process Mark’s lips landed softly on yours the feeling sending a red-hot heat pulsating through your veins. With your free hand not gripping the boat to stay afloat you wound it around the back of Mark’s neck wanting to pull him closer. The tip of his tongue poked your lower lip dragging a long slow line across your bottom lip before you parted your lips for him. The kiss deepened and the fire in the pit of your stomach roared to life. Your tongues swirled around each other hungrily as if you were the only thing the other person needed. Mark’s hand on your body roamed up and down your sides before settling on the small of your back to pull you in closer. His soft lips melded with yours causing the fire in your stomach to grow even more. Running your hand through Mark’s hair you deepened the kiss hearing a low moan slip from his lips before you both broke apart for air.
“Now it’s my turn to say wow,” Mark said breathlessly, smiling as he pressed his forehead against yours.
“Wow indeed,” you said back glancing back up at the boat overhead biting your lip.
“Right,” Mark chuckled swimming over to the side,” Come help me push this up.” You kicked your way over to where Mark was and on the count of three managed to flip the boat right side up. Holding on to the edge Mark pushed you up first allowing you to help pull him up. You both flopped onto the bench laughing once again noticing how soaked you both were while watching your shoes drift away.
“It’s okay,” you started,” I didn’t like those shoes very much to begin with.” Mark chuckled plucking the paddles out from the water before handing you one.
“Let’s head back,” he said,” But first.” He leaned over you pulling your face to his before placing a long, slow kiss on your lips.
“I hope that was okay,” he said pulling back so he was only an inch or two from your face.
“More than okay,” you said kissing him once more before smiling back at him. He bit his lip giddily before taking his seat on the bench beginning to row. Once making it back to the dock, Mark tied up the boat pulling you up onto the dock to grab your things.
“So, despite falling into the lake what was your favorite part about this date?” Mark asked eyeing you.
“Falling into the lake made the entire date,” you shot back winking at him. You could swear you saw a light blush on Mark’s cheeks. He reached for your hand which you took as he began to walk you back.
“Oh,” you said looking down at the rock littered ground and your bare feet. Mark smiled at you kneeling down to allow you to crawl onto his back. He linked his arms under your thighs before standing back up again beginning to walk in the opposite direction that you came.
“Wait Mark we came from that way,” you said pointing in the opposite direction.
“I know princess,” he said without stopping. You wrapped your arms around his neck tighter as he led you toward a lake house. The lights of the house were all off and parked in the driveway was a shiny black sports car. Mark fished his keys from his pocket clicking the button twice before seeing the lights of the shiny black sports car blink at you.
“That’s yours?!” you exclaimed as he set you down by the passenger door. He pulled it open for you letting you slide inside before circling the car to get into the driver’s seat.
“Yes, this is my baby,” he said proudly as the engine roared to life,” Remember how I said I was new to the area? Well I am new but that’s only because I just moved back. I actually grew up in the city and my family and I would come to this lake house, but then I went to college and my first company flew me out to Los Angeles for work, and now I’m back.” You looked at him in awe as he started backing out of the driveway heading towards the city. A million questions raced through your mind and you shot question after question at Mark asking him about his family, his life in the city before having to move, and of why he returned.
“Well Jackson is my boy, when he said he had an opportunity for me I just couldn’t turn him down,” Mark replied smiling at you. He took the hand closest to you off the wheel and rested it on your thigh as the city came into view. You glanced down at his hand feeling happy butterflies dance around in your stomach as he began to rub your thigh with his thumb. The rest of the car ride was ridden out jamming to songs by Mark and Jackson’s artists and taking in the beautiful views of the city.
The second half of the night was surprising and shocking, almost enough to make you forget all about Jaebum again. Almost.
Mark parked by the entrance of your apartment building shutting his car off before walking around to open your door for you. He led you out and you walked hand in hand up to your apartment. Resting a hand on the doorknob you jiggled it to make sure it was unlocked before turning back to Mark. “I had a really great time tonight,” you said wrapping your arms around his neck.
“Thank you for letting me take you away,” Mark replied as he grabbed your waist pulling you against him. You looked at him shyly before standing up on your toes to kiss him. Mark smiled into the kiss hugging you against him tighter. It was at that moment it felt like nothing could go wrong.
“What the hell are you doing with my girl?!” Your heart stopped and Mark broke apart from you looking into the direction of the voice.
“Your girl?” Mark shot back standing straighter and squaring his shoulders.
“Damn right,” the voice said and the blood drained from your face.
“Y/N who is this tool?” the voice said.
“JB you really shouldn’t be here,” you said back quietly.
A/N: What?! JB is back?! Tune in next time to find out more. ;) In the meantime if you liked this please give it a like and reblog I would appreciate it!
