An explanation on what QUADRANT FEELINGS feel like.

Those with any sorts of quadrant crushes OR those in quadrant relationships tend to feel a few easily identifiable things.

Any and every member in a troll romance relationship feels some form of pity.

The base descriptions of troll romance types may lead you to believe otherwise, but it's very easily explainable if you think about a few things.

Trolls (at least in canon) really seem to have only a few "emotions." One being hate, one being pity. That being said, I think any relationship based on pure hatred doesn't exactly have the push and pull required for a short term OR a long term relationship between two trolls. What's going to pull you back to someone you hate? Something deeper than just pure hate, that's what.

But what IS pity? Let us take a look at a few dictionary definitions of pity to break it down.

"sympathetic or kindly sorrow evoked by the suffering, distress, or misfortune of another, often leading one to give relief or aid or to show mercy"

"sympathetic sorrow for one suffering, distressed, or unhappy"

(Merriam Webster)

"a feeling of sadness or sympathy for someone else's unhappiness or difficult situation"

(Cambridge Dictionary)

"a strong feeling of sadness or sympathy for someone or something"

(Britannica Dictionary)

As the basis of all troll relationships are pity, getting a few definitions is best for any description. To put it in the most concise way possible, all of these above definitions are good ways to describe exactly how troll pity feels.

2. Despite pity being the core of all romantic troll relationships, it is often utilized and felt in relatively different ways across all quadrants.

When it comes to flushed romance, (the trolls in this relationship being referred to as matesprits,) pity is often referred to as the main factor. In a way, this is accurate, but it often feels like it's ignoring the major pity aspect in other quadrants. Those who are flushed for each other often feel extreme pity (or even on occasion regular pity) for one another. Flushed relationships are relationships where the pity is very prevalent, but often is less acted on. Flushed relationships feel that pity for one another, but they don't really feel the need to act on it too much. To quote a popular phrase, a good way to describe them would lean on "misery loves company" rather than any action taking place. They feel a sort of passive pity for one another, finding comfort in just knowing that and being together rather than a more active approach. Flushed romance is one of two red quadrants, both of which are based primarily on the positive emotions of all parties. Flushed romance is one of two concupiscient quadrants, those which can often involve sexual feelings, though not always.

Pale romance is the second topic in this, acting quite differently than flushed romance. When it comes to pale partners, (referred to as moirails,) pity also plays a role, though a far more active role. A common misconception about pale romance is that it's not romance, which is false. Pale romance is romance, after all. Those in a pale relationship feel pity much like every other troll relationship, but alongside that pity is a sort of feeling of caring, understanding, and a need to pacify and help their moirail. The support level between two pale partners can vary anywhere from one side being more on the recieving end and one on the giving end to an equal sort of thing on all sides. Unlike the previous relationship discussed, they have a more active pity, showing in their comfort and placating of their moirails. Pale romance is one of two red quadrants, both of which are based primarily on the positive emotions of all parties. Pale romance is one of two conciliatory quadrants, both of which involve some degree of pacifying.

Pitch/caliginous romance, (with a partner in this relationship being referred to as a kismesis,) is a relationship built on primarily hate. It contains the same pity as every other quadrant, but the main characteristic of pitch romance is the shared mutual hate and the mutual respect of both parties. Those who feel pitch feelings for one another tend to have a handful of things they admire about the other party, but that admiration is outweighed by the hatred they have for the other's bad traits. When it comes to caliginous romance, the pity they feel comes from knowing all that their kismesis could be if they were to improve, and being upset that they aren't becoming that on their own. The pity and hatred takes an active role where each party pushes for the other to get better. There's a sort of "get better" thing that goes along with their "I'm better than you" rivalry. They typically tend to push for the other to get better while also trying to be better than each other. Pitch romance is one of two black quadrants, both of which are based primarily on the negative emotions from the majority of parties involved. Pitch romance is one of two concupiscient quadrants, those which can often involve sexual feelings, though not always.

Ashen romance, (with the middleman partner being referred to as their auspistice,) is a relationship that could exist for a few different reasons. At the very core of it, an auspistice feels pity and ashen feelings for the two trolls they're mediating between. Those feeling ashen feelings can be best described as a sort of responsibility they feel to keep the hatred between the two trolls healthy, or, in the case of preventing pitch infidelity, keeping the hatred platonic. This feeling is also considered a type of romance. An auspistice's responsibility for the two parties is something they willingly sign up for, so it's generally not as stressful as one might assume. Auspistices exist to make sure the emotions and actions between the two mediated parties stay at whatever level is best for everyone involved. Ashen is one of two black quadrants, both of which are based primarily on the negative emotions from the majority of parties involved. Ashen romance is one of two conciliatory quadrants, both of which involve some degree of pacifying.

homestuck quadrants!! because i have autism and i like reading too much into them.

pls note this is my personal reading of them and while i am extremely confident in my definitions the way theyre defined leaves some of it up for interpretation. im welcome to hearing other interpretations!! also i can clarify if needed :3

i think its important to start off with something very very very important

all quadrants are ROMANTIC, including both the pale quadrant and the ashen quadrant. it is troll romance! please don't ship siblings as moirails i promise it is not platonic thank you!!

all quadrants are based on a mutual care and respect. there is affection! there is admiration! basically, despite not using the word love, ALL quadrants are based on that deep caring and affection that love usually would

hussie didn't make great examples for most of these but meowrails is a good moirail example so hey thats a win

matesprits! pity/flushed/red romance

in canon it's described as the closest thing to human romance, but it is more complicated than that because instead of a relationship based on love like human romance is, it's based on PITY.

most regularly you do the same stuff as you would in a human relationship, and theyre functionally VERY similar, the main factor is pity instead of love!! as my friend hal said, "what a pathetic man... i need to take care of you"

moirails! pale romance

in canon it's described as platonic soulmates, but also throw that out the window because it is troll Romance. theyre there to pacify and sort of like ground and balance each other. it's also said in canon that it has sort of a fate thing and that it just Happens. So. take that as you will

in a moiraillegiance you deeply care for your moirail! much like you do for whatever other quadrants but you sort of do more of a protecting / improving role there too. pale and black quadrants have a lot of overlap!! blackrom is just hate pushing for improvement whereas palerom is affection and concern pushing for improvement.

kismesissitude! hate/black romance

in the most basic way i can describe it, blackrom is having a mutual respect for someones positive traits but having a greater hatred for their negative ones.

it's like "if you didnt have all these bad traits, you'd be great." and you push each other to get better and fix those worse things about yourself out of a deep caring for them!! the bad traits are seen as ways you can improve and you put effort into bettering each other and yourselves because you see the good they can be. my quote this time "wow you're a pathetic man. get better about it this is pathetic."

auspisticism / ashen romance

ashenrom is a more interesting quadrant because even in canon it's not explored very much?? there are some mentions but it isn't expanded on. they exist mostly to keep kismesissitudes healthy OR to prevent any pitch infidelity.

it is ALSO romantic (TROLL ROMANCE.) and comes from a place of caring from the parties involved. theres mediating! support! they make sure everything is ok between trolls and mostly are there to keep things from getting COMPLETELY out of hand. hal quote again. "you are both so pathetic. stop."

basically trolls seek out the most miserable whelps for their quadrants usually. just a little bit. half joking

Teagan is aro in ashen, and honestly would probably just end up pitch for whoever tried to auspice between him and someone else. He might have an easier time if he had to be the auspice for someone else? Like a QPR for ashenrom.

That said, the few times someone has stopped him from getting seriously hurt or seriously hurting someone else, Akhena was the one to step in the way, usually without actually falling back on ashen coded actions. More just "3tep away from my mo1ra1l," or "Are you 3ure they're a 6ood f1t for you p1tch? They don't 3eem much of a chalen6e."

Viktor would make a good auspice actually. He's generally not affected by others emotions, and could give advice without favoring one side or the other. But currently, he needs an auspice between him and Deimos over on @mycrappyrpsideblog .

He recently lost his moirail and he's not sure how he should be feeling aside from hurt, and that's made him pretend he's fine so he's just throwing himself into work and getting blood. With Ashoal also having been gone but his fate less certain until recently, he's been hooking up outside quadrants. Even had a FWB who thought he didn't have a mate, so woops

Headcanon time since I’m thinking about it.

First off, I think that blood color in almost all cases is a more salient than gender among trolls. It’s considered more important and believed to impart more information. So instead of having gendered expectations in dating and the like, trolls tend to have caste-based expectations. Or at least, relative caste expectations (highblood-lowblood vs same caste relationships).

These expectations vary by quadrant, since each quad has different expected/inherent power imbalances.

For example, a “traditional” moirallegence has a higherblooded member who is to be soothed but also expected to protect, and a lowerblooded member who soothes and is protected. A slight variation of this where both trolls in turn sooth and are soothed, and/or where the lowblood is protected from themselves are also fairly common.

This of course leaves out several alternate patterns: Same caste moirallegences of all sorts, highblood who needs protecting and lowblood who needs calming, trolls of any castes who don’t follow the protector-soothee/protected-soother pattern at all but have some other pattern of necessary give and take (likely codependent in human eyes). This isn’t even getting into poly pale relationships.

Eq<>Nep is a pretty traditional moirallegence with a bit of Eq trying to protect everyone ELSE from Nepeta, but not so much thru soothing her

Folykl<>Kuprum are the alternative give-take kind

Akhena<>Teagan on my own blog alternate roles with an added dash of Akhena protecting Teags from himself

I don’t think a lot of people in the roleplay community even think about ashenrom much since it’s a bit confusing in canon and with 3 trolls being the standard for this form of romance but I think it probably has its expectations too. Like, two trolls of similar castes, regardless of where in the spectrum, being auspicestized by a midblood, because midbloods are supposedly meddling in personality, calming and somewhat common. After that I could see a highblood auspicistizing between too lowerblooded trolls. Lowbloods might be seen as good auspistices for higher bloods if they have the right personality AND have the ability to help break up a physical fight, like certain psionics.

I don’t have too much canon stuff aside from Kanaya being called the village ashen bicycle.

Red and pitch roms I think are expected to be closer in caste than the conciliatory quads, and when there are large caste differences, there are again certain expectations. Lowbloods are likely expected to be “grateful” if a troll more than a couple castes above them chooses to be their matesprit. Meanwhile, outside of powerful psionics, a much lowerblooded kismesis would be considered borderline shameful for most highbloods.

I originally had a lot of other thoughts about this but I kinda worked on it off and on throughout the day so a lot of things I wanted to talk about have slipped my mind.

Moirails have a mutual caring for each other and much like REDROM, a mutual pity. Redrom tends to be a lot less active in helping with those they pity, moreso just pitying each other rather than the moirails where they pity each other and Activelt try to help each other

Redrom

As I mentioned with palerom redrom is basically the concupiscent and less actively involved pitying quadrant. They tend to act more similarly to a regular human romance but it is EXPLICITLY DIFFERENT BECAUSE HUMAN LOVE AND TROLL PITY ARE DIFFERENT THINGS

Redrom partners tend to have the more basic romance things, but they are also often capable of wallowing in that pity together rather than doing anything about it?

Ashenrom

ASHENROM IS ROMANTIC BETWEEN ALL PARTIES. WELL, MAYBE NOT THE TWO BEING HELPED IN THIS WAY, BUT THE PERSON DOING THE HELPING HAS ROMANTIC FEELINGS FOR BOTH OF THEM. ASHEN FEELINGS.

The difference between ashen and pale tends to be that ashen wants to calm a conflict between two trolls and palerom tends to focus on one individuals feelings over everyone elses

Ashenrom is usually used to prevent pitch infidelity AND is also sometimes used within pitch relationships to prevent it from becoming unhealthy

Black Romance

The Black Quadrant of Troll Romance intrigues me to no end, and makes my thoughts churn like a creative slurry in a bucket, wandering what exactly its like under long term circumstances, the little intricacies of unwritten rules and expectations to be found within this sort of relationship.

How did it even first occur? What in Troll biology cause it to be a such a strong fixture in their social culture?

Perhaps these questions will be answered one day... probably in a way that makes me wish they hadn't and force me to moan like a lil bitch in disappointment.

We can only speculate for now however... which is what im going to do.

In its history, Black Romance likely started as a genuine desire to kill a rival, likely over the feelings of the same Matesprite, but unable to do so, in spite of the genuinely serious trying at mutual murder, only to find they dont mind each other so much, even if they dont like many other aspects about them~

Even though they try to kill their rival they actually begin to make one another as strong as possible through constant conflict. Like two Knights sharpening their skills in a friendly sparing match. After all, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Given Troll society, they likely take this notion to heart.

Through this rivalry, their partner is made as strong as possible, so they may live to see each other again another day.

I think, in my opinion, a Black Romance is a relationship born of Hate and Irritation, but evolves into a genuine mutual love and respect.

It starts as Hate, but becomes Love over time.

They may start in opposite directions, but they ultimately end up in the same place.

Any actual pain inflicted upon your rival is to make them dulled and numb to that pain. Makes them ready to deal with it mentally. Their weak traits being absolved or mitigated to some extent, and their strengths expanded and reinforced.

The individuals, sharpen each others knives for their partners to use one another, so that they may also sharpen their skills, ensuring that they are both full prepared for the trials ahead.

A Black Romance usually revolves around the two partners actually trying to hurt and injure one another, both verbally and physically, but not cripple, maim or kill their opponent. Its the two trying to Dominate, but not so thoroughly as they cannot grow as individuals. To remove the blemishes in their techniques, working out the kinks in execution.

Blackroms must have times of bonding and enjoyment, a break from the conflict, to relieve stress... by ♠any♠means♠necessary♠~

This often revolves around the two Haters tending to eachothers wounds, and enjoying the typical Red Romance activities, like dinner and a movie, albeit with a side of snark, super sized. Probably poisoning their partners meal, just enough for them to get an upset stomach and vomit over it all.

Signs of affection take the forms of hand holding, kissing, and small levels of antagonisms such as harmless insults or mild scuffles. One method is manipulation to encourage romantic retaliations, such as stealing clothes, pranking their rival, or even publicly humiliating them in way that will embarrass them but wont destroy their standing or self-esteem.

Anything that gets under their skin without causing permanent harm goes and one must always be on guard and never show signs of weakness or reveal any information to their kismesis, lest they use this against their partner.

One sign of devotion in a relationship is wearing the colors of your partner. In the case of a Matesprit, its their favorite color.

In the case of a Kismesis, its their blood color, or at least a color they may hate.

All relationships are born of trust, but for a Kismesissitude, it is far more important, for they must both understand they are not trying to kill eachother while trying to wound one another.

A good sign of trust is allowing your Kismesis to wear your clothes with minimal reservation, as they probably wont destroy it outright, but probably will at least modify it, such as dying it another color.

This trust is what is crucial for it to succeed, they have to try and hurt without killing. And due to nature of the relationship, they try to one up each other constantly.

Stabbing someone in the arm may result in them cutting off your hand in response.

This often results in the one of them killing their partner kind of unintentionally while being caught up in a whirlwind of passionate hatred~

Sometimes in bed even.

These bouts of hate filled fighting can spill over into society at large, causing damage and injury to others and their property.

This is why the Auspices were founded~

The importance of the Auspice in a Black Romance is critical, for they serve as the referees, and prevent the relationship from getting out of hand. The loss of one or both individuals can be devastating to the group, especially if they’re of great standing and use to said group. Losing your own members to themselves is embarrassing to say the least.

They at minimum, keep the two individuals focused, preventing them from getting embroiled in their bitter dark chocolate freakishness, and having them stay civil as well as decent in public.

Anyone can be an Auspice, be they a passing stranger, or a concerned friend. But many Auspices are more permanent fixtures, usually one party members current Moirail or Matesprite.

But most often, it is normally a third party that is a mutual friend, that aides in keeping things from getting out of hand. A platonic friend that can help cool the flames and calm the storms, so the ship will not sink.

But Not All Ashenroms Are Platonic~

Some Are Polyamourous Relationships Where The individuals Engage in Mutually Consenting Frivolity In Their Own Various Ways, Be They ♥Flushed♣Or♣Pitched♠ And Can Vary On The Individuals Involved, Creating A Sort Of Menagerie Of Earthly Delights, One Could Compare To A Candy Store With A Wide Variety Of Sugary Treats To Suit Every Taste~~~

Which Makes Such Relationships Quite Appealing To Most People~

However, there are times when someone is Auspicing for their own selfish desires. Attempts may be done by the Auspice to change the nature of the relationship, and pull an individual into another Quadrant.

This is why they are known to be “Meddlers”, and prolonged Ashroms are rare, especially when they dont make it to the bedroom.

When they do make it in, its normally so the two individuals can pail and the 3rd party ensures they dont kill one another and nothing more. Once completed, the relationship may continue or end.

If an Auspice doesn't know what they are doing, they may be unable to keep up and be ineffective, or even make the situation worse.

But in the case that an Auspice does succeed, and pays their cards right, everyone can have a grand old time together, creating a rare instance where more than two individuals has a well balanced Romance with variety.

Black Romance often ends in two rivals breaking apart, either they cant handle the stress or one of them dies, usually at the hands of their partner. Or one of them simply gets bored, and doesn't feel fulfilled like they once were.

A Black Romance is after all, based in enthusiastic engagement, and it is not unusual for the relationship to end in mutual separation.

But there are times when one side loses the romantic aspect, and the hate turns true and genuine, and kills their partner on purpose.

There are even instances of cruel situations where one partner is manipulating their other for dark machinations.

Machinations that are Darker than Black

Abuse does often occur, but a proper Pitched relationship has consent, subtext and subtle hints giving expressing desires, and when fulfilled, there is aftercare, wounds are dressed, and reminders that there is affection. Should a deed go too far, a boundary overstepped, a true Kismesis will in one way or another, express regret and remorse over a transgression.

Transgression may include overly controlling behavior, emotionally isolating them, direct harm with intent to cripple or kill, engaging in a relationship with your Kismesis’s actual enemies who want to kill them, destroying what is valued and cant be replaced and manipulating them for personal gains at their permanent expense, especially when they cant afford it.

A Kismesis cares for their partners feelings and well being, and a good one goes out of their way to ensure they are secure and safe, even when having fun.

An abuser does not.

But then there are the very rare instances, where Kismesissitude is so strong and so stable and healthy between partners, that they seemingly end up in the same place as a end of a Flushed romance.

A truly loving rivalry, whose only goal in it, is the joy of having it.

When it happens, its like Black Magic.

The two seem to engage in bantering and mutual antagonism, yet its clear they’re enjoying each other in the act. Vacillating between Red, Black and Pale all within moments.

Should a Black Romantic Couple reach this level, they stay together simply because they love being together.

Marriage exists within Troll society, though it is rare, especially when its outside ones blood caste.

Black Marriages are particularly rare, as the process of getting Hate Married is rather intense.

A proposal involves biting off eachothers right ring finger and swallowing it. Which is pretty hardcore if you ask me.

Which turned out to be too hardcore, which was phased out for simply biting a wound into their partners finger instead
