Today I offer: rocks.
I tried to keep close to the original HNK artstyle, but I ultimately resorted to my own shading methods, and what came out of it is…this. Can’t decide if I like it or not, but I’m not going to judge a piece that has been marinating in my drafts for more than a single day.
All the spiral-type decorations were actually unintentional, I’ll say that much…I was heavily struggling with Yellow Diamond’s face, and while I was trying to draw that, I just doodled something on it out of laziness and liquified it, but it somehow accidentally ended up making the theme for the rest of this drawing. It looks quite nice though, I might reuse it a few times for other stuff.

Now that Arthur’s design in the Fifteen manga…well…exists and is quite immovable from this fandom, I’ve decided to simply use it as an excuse to draw more versions of messed up Arthur designs. I mean, what else am I supposed to do?
Tumblr media
Some say, if you can’t beat them, join them, but I’d say I’m more just using the opportunity to shamelessly create more edgy designs on the basis of one from an “official” BSD content source. I’m…certainly far from joining whatever was the original thought behind this, that’s for sure.
On another note, not to get anyhow personal on the main blog, but I’ve been in a quite miserable state of not being able to draw absolutely anything for a very long time now, but I found out how to use this artstyle by chance, and…it almost feels as though someone threw my lost inspiration back at me, so perhaps I’ll be able to return here slightly more often for at least a while, I’m truly hoping for that. I really like the way it looks and it’s not anyhow tiring or very time-consuming for me, which are all things I’ve been missing, and honestly, I’d be quite content with just some silly doodles nowadays instead of full pieces, so this will do more than fine.
Anyhow…that aside, for those curious, these were all just little designs I came up with on a whim, nothing somehow elaborately planned or thought out. My personal favorite is the one in the top left corner, I’m almost tempted to reuse it someday…but for what, I wonder?

The completed Cover Art for my fic, Cherish. 🥺💕
The original sketch for this artwork had been sitting in my drafts for forever (dating way back to when the story still possessed its original beta name, in fact) — abandoned for well over a year to two years, due to the fact that I, myself, cannot replicate the original BSD manga/light novel style for the artwork or shading as I had envisioned it.
However, after finally securing a collab with my incredible friend, @asachuu, whose artwork technique and style I have admired for a very long time (but have always been too shy to ask for help with my fic), I was finally able to see this idea brought to life through his amazing and unique talent. 💕💖🥺💖💕
I’m extremely happy and proud to actually present this to all of y’all now, and I hope you’ll look forward to this tale’s future.

Bungou Stray Dogs: Cherish — A Grand Directory & Master List
Seeing as that I have made many posts now on the topic, and anticipate many, many more in the future as the story further progresses, I decided it may be prudent to create a masterlist, to make the posts more accessible to myself and others.
The version of this list you are presently reading is current as of April 6th, 2024. As Tumblr does not auto-update reblogged posts that are later edited, if you are reading this from a reblog, this list may not immediately appear up to date; to ‘refresh’ it, please click here.
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy!

Rising from my grave to inform you all that I legitimately do not understand this “Arthur is forcefully, obsessively in love with Paul” claim/trope I’ve seen a couple of times over the years and I quite frankly don’t know where exactly it originated, but it’s just…a bit confusing, at the very least.
I don’t dispute that Arthur may have very well been in love with Paul and quite deeply so, far from, but some people speak of him as if he were this yandere stereotype in canon (AUs are AUs and those I am not talking about here), and I’m not certain of the context behind it? I can only perhaps think of the line in Stormbringer in which he swears to bring Paul back home no matter what, but that’s a stand-alone line he says on a mission during which his most trusted partner betrays him, and all other implied interactions between the two lead me to believe that Arthur is really just this shy, lonely 15-19 year old— see Arthur’s whole memoir claiming he wasn’t allowed to have any personal relationships, his supposed canonical age at the time, Paul’s recollection in the epilogue of Arthur “shyly” handing him over his gift, and speaking of said gift; Arthur’s uncertainty of whether giving it was the right thing to do, plus his worry about it over a decade later in his final moments— not this forceful, deranged maniac so far blinded by love to a point of thinking himself to have some kind of ownership over his partner. I suppose you could point to Arthur’s second death being only for Paul’s sake and nothing else, a self-sacrificial act that doubtlessly paints him as someone who most definitely cares about his partner far more than he should, but get this— he himself claims he’s already dead, and Paul was the only person he’d been allowed to care for, to look after, to stay beside and so on, not to mention he doesn’t see himself as anything of importance anyway— claiming no one will remember him after his death and he’ll only get an unmarked tombstone doesn’t invoke anything else, really— so I don’t think he’d take it as something of the same exact magnitude that it must have had in Paul’s eyes, and besides, he’s never seen it as something for Paul to constantly remember him for after his death to haunt him, for instance; it was only an act of saving his life to make up for a birthday gift he didn’t like, or so Arthur himself claims.
I certainly don’t doubt Arthur’s adoration and evident self-deprecation being horribly unhealthy, it definitely is and I haven’t written an essay on it just to claim otherwise, but there’s nothing pointing to him being anyhow forceful, possessive, completely dismissive of personal boundaries, rather the opposite— the man quite literally, canonically worries whether giving Paul a gift was the right thing to do, considering he wasn’t anyhow appreciated for it, and in not a single sentence is it implied he thinks of himself as having some kind of ownership over Paul beyond having raised him and given him a life— which, might I also add, he says as Paul points a gun at him with the intention of killing him, something which he doesn’t even hold against him a single time. In very simple terms, if I am to summarize it, I’d say Arthur is more of an extreme doormat personality, someone who doubtlessly puts his partner on a pedestal while thinking of himself as nowhere near, and although that’s nowhere close to behavior which should be rooted for, he’s certainly not some lovesick madman who is entirely oblivious to how much he’s overstepping— while it is true that Paul doesn’t appreciate his care for him or his attempts at comforting him whatsoever, that’s just…not a display of obsessive love on Arthur’s part? I’m not entirely certain on how to explain it to get the point across, but there’s a huge difference between wanting to comfort the dearest person to you, even if they despise it like Paul did, and showering them with unwanted affection, being possessive over them and whatnot.
Besides, Arthur has not once expected a thing in return for his actions throughout both novels— he’s never claimed he wants Paul’s gratitude, appreciation, love, anything, or that he’d feel anyhow entitled to it, perhaps even that he’d wind up getting his way someday if he continued, or any other such thing that this trope very often comes with. All of Arthur’s actions have never been to gain anything from Paul, and that’s clear from his memoir alone— if there’s one thing he actually wanted, it was to have someone to care for, someone to matter to, but that wasn’t something he was forcing Paul to show in any way, that was what he’d already felt he achieved from the start, most likely because he couldn’t have had any other frame of reference. There was nothing he ever wanted to force Paul to do, and if anything, what he saw Paul as was a human being of his own, not something which ultimately belonged to him in any way, shape or form, or someone who was indebted to him for all Arthur had done for him.
All that to say, this is just a short post against blatant mischaracterization, not against AUs, as I said. I admit the AU concept itself is very much not my thing either, but my personal opinion is obviously not the opinion of everyone else, and if that’s what you enjoy creating content for, feel free to go for it— just please don’t claim it’s actually canon. That’s all.

A lot of people are talking about Arthur’s age right now to the point even I know about it from under my rock, but instead of stating the obvious and simply assuming everyone is in on everything already, I’ll just ask this: what is actually so unbelievable about him being 27? I’ve heard folks say that it would mean he would be 15-16 at the time of joining his organization, which is indeed correct, but somehow, this comes as a surprise or something unacceptable, and I don’t understand why? The two literal fandom favorites, Dazai and Chuuya, met at fifteen years old when one was a mafia member already and the other joined at the same age, and no one seems to find that unbelievable?
Anyway, since I have my two cents on this matter, I have to shove the rest of this under the cut, but please bear with me here.
I presume people are mostly shocked for that reason, though do correct me if I’m wrong— I do see how it could be inconceivable to think of his whole entire background, memories, memoir and so on as being attributed to a 15-19 year old instead of someone far older, but if that’s due to any other reason than it simply not meeting expectations thanks to some former headcanons, I’m not too sure why. Obvious Fifteen parallels aside, it’s not as if BSD is some light-hearted series where characters going through incredibly harsh events we cannot even imagine have to be of legal age and in perfect circumstances to be able to handle it— I suppose some could be wondering about that aspect, but it would match up with the whole feel and plot of the story, and no part of it feels out of place. I’ll admit I used to believe Arthur was 36-37 at the time of his death as I didn’t know of his age either, but upon seeing he was a decade younger, I didn’t exactly think it to be nonsense for the sake of him being “too young”, and not to mention, this would also mirror his IRL counterpart, being 16 at the time of meeting Verlaine— which you absolutely could say is too young, considering the entire story between them, but it did happen, and BSD is based on the real-life authors after all— so I don’t see any argument against this which truly makes sense, all things considered.
That aside, I will say that Arthur’s canonical age specifically matters to me, unlike some other characters’ ages, and perhaps my reasoning could be a shared one that contributes to some of this confusion, and that is because it does change the perspective of Fifteen/Stormbringer to quite an extent. I had a whole post drafted about this already a week ago, but it seems to be even more relevant now, so I’ll just throw a part of it here and the rest in a reblog to not derail too much.
In my opinion, if one is to read Arthur’s memoir from Stormbringer, it feels much different to think of it as written by an adult as opposed to a teenager, purely because of its content— the character who has no family to return to, no loved ones or friends or even personal feelings he is allowed to have due to his job, the one who is overjoyed to finally have a partner whom he could make any difference to and who is already prepared to be forgotten after his death anyway, is not actually fully grown up, which maybe some are having a hard time accepting, I’m not too certain.
To me, this view on the story is indeed a lot sadder, especially if one is to consider his only partner betrayed him at 19 instead of whatever other theory could be in place, alongside all else I won’t be mentioning here as I believe I wrote a long enough essay about those two as is, but I don’t think any of it is strange or odd-sounding. If I may, in my personal opinion, I actually believe it makes far more sense, and not because it once again would align with his IRL counterpart even here— no, rather considering his behavior in Fifteen of desperately trying to find a way to remember his best yet only friend, likely because he hadn’t had anyone by his side from such a young age and clearly latched onto the first person he could have had alongside him, which could be a fully applicable theory even if you hadn’t seen the pair in any unrequited romantic contexts that could have been his motive. Does it make the story far more sorrowful? Yes. But does it make the story nonsense and unbelievable? Absolutely not. At this point, I would be so much more surprised if he wound up actually being 37 as I and what I suspect is a decent amount of others guessed at first, because in that case, I would somewhat understand the other side to my arguments— I still wouldn’t agree with them as I never did, even in the past when I didn’t have any extra information, but I could potentially see where they’re coming from at the very least.
I’ll just briefly acknowledge that perhaps some saw the memoir implying Arthur being more of Paul’s mentor at the time, being much older and wiser than him as would be expected, but I don’t think this was ever anyhow highlighted in the novels to make it clear that Arthur could be considered as such entirely— it was only said he would be the one to raise him, which I admit would not leave me assuming the given character is 15, but all things considered, it still aligns with everything above. I also have to acknowledge that in Fifteen, he is referred to as an “older” member of the Port Mafia, but I believe that refers to the eight years he spent in it, and was not meant to be an indicator of his actual age at the time, although compared to Chuuya and Dazai back then, perhaps 27 could indeed be seen as older in a very relative sense. Still, neither of these things are a direct contradiction to his supposed age, and while I’m not here to “prove” he’s 27 or 37 or whatever else one could assume, since I don’t have any other source of information other than the S3 guidebook and don’t have any reason to come up with alternative theories, hence why I choose to trust it unless official sources state otherwise, I’m only here because it surprises me how many people are shocked by this, as if many other characters in BSD weren’t in the same exact age range at the time of drastic or serious events happening around them/to them. I assume that, for some, this is merely something which goes against their personal headcanons or is just wholly unexpected, with nothing more in-depth sitting behind it, at whom this post is not aimed whatsoever, but I saw some saying it doesn’t even fit into canon at all, which…how, exactly? Because I don’t see it at all.

I have no clue how desktop Tumblr works, so pardon me if I mess something up, but upon drawing 17 pages of a manga for a week straight, I don’t think this is the biggest problem for me anymore.
Minor spoilers for specifically the Fifteen manga below the cut, but it’s really just one visual detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll make the joke for you so you don’t have to; yes, there’s four things I don’t draw often and it shows: Dazai, Chuuya, backgrounds and facial expressions. Now that that’s out of the way, I’m still delighted to present you with my week-long full-time torment I’ve chosen for myself, just because the last chapter of the Fifteen manga was ever-so-slightly frustrating, albeit admittedly visually right up my alley.
I’m not going to go into why, I’ve already spoken about what I find dissatisfying in particular about this manga that extends to every chapter and is no different this time around either, but I’ve decided to honor Hoshikawa-san’s creative choices nevertheless and borrow at least Arthur’s eyes from the latest chapter, just because…why not? Still, to achieve balance, I had to take phase 16 and turn the absolute lack of any emotion whatsoever to the exact opposite, and although I’d be willing to admit I’ve had to mildly overdo it, the stage play disagrees with me on that anyway, so I suppose that’s just fine here.
Now. Do I believe half the pages look as if I were drawing them in an extreme hurry? Of course, because I was. But do I care? Not enough to prevent me from posting this, and if anything, I can redraw some stuff later if I feel up to it and edit this post. I don’t have enough time nor a decent budget to try and create some kind of Mona Lisa at the moment, but what I do have is at least more care for the original source. At this point, I’m somewhat grateful for this slightly lengthy, tiring experience, just because doing this again will be easier the most-likely-inevitable next time.

In honor of me somehow finding this manga at a local bookstore, to my extreme surprise.
I thought this artstyle would be somewhat easier to attempt than several others I’ve encountered already, mainly the hair, which…turned out to be the hardest part. Yet again, I was extremely wrong, but I hope my rendition is close enough.

Rather mild blood warning that I’m only putting here just because the drawing is a long enough panel to hide regardless. Not to worry, this is a shitpost…I think.
Tumblr media
Please don’t ask me why I spent eight precious hours of my life on this. I don’t know where I found the original joke, I’m pretty sure it’s been reused too many times and I hope nobody did it for Fifteen, just so I can contribute…whatever this is.
On another note, the way I see it, manga backgrounds are yet to be something I know how to make look natural, but I think this experience convinced me not to become an aspiring manga artist or anything close to that, so I might listen…maybe.

I once made a joke that my favorite characters are always either some kind of sad, misunderstood types, or just the absolute worst scum of the earth for which even a garbage bin would be a luxury. There are many exceptions, of course, but…I think this speaks for itself, and no, I don’t have an actual explanation for it.
For now, I’ve rushed this one, but I might come back someday when I’ll have a proper while and make something a lot more detailed, even though I have quite the list of One Piece characters I also want to draw at some point. To be honest, this show is slightly holding my life together at the moment, so I’ll be fine even if I manage to scrape together some simple doodles, which…is what I pretty much consider this to be. The aforementioned list is just getting longer and I’ve still got 800 more episodes to watch anyway, so I could probably afford to be efficient.
Speaking of that list…1/?

I was going to post this yesterday as soon as I became aware of the new update, but I forgot about it and passed out. The sentiment is the same today as it has been for the past few months, though, and thank goodness I’m a bit more awake for this because there are…things to say.
I mostly reserve from some kind of lengthy, in-depth commentary because I genuinely don’t have the time or ability to go through Fifteen and the manga separately to point out even half of the most general things that are so incredibly jarring, all I’ll say is just. Why.
I would have complained about this ages ago already, had I not been entirely convinced I’m just losing my mind and I’m seeing things that aren’t there, given the manga does follow a lot of the dialogue of the light novel as opposed to its abysmal anime adaptation, but I suppose it is common knowledge that when you’re drawing a manga, or really any kind of story with both a text and visual element, the readers will not be focusing exclusively on the text. The visuals are just as important, if not more at times, and they can heavily change the feeling or mood of said story. With that being said, I think you can understand what I’m trying to get at here, and more specifically, why I’m very tired seeing yet another adaptation imply Arthur is some kind of cold-hearted monster to be feared even by the audience. I won’t be using any specific examples beyond this point, but all I’ll say is that I’ve had this in the drafts since the moment I saw the panels of Arthur getting accused of betraying the organization, somehow managing to get the text correct and yet make him look either completely lifeless or annoyed, as if he weren’t confused or clueless at all, unlike what the LN itself states. It just went downhill from that very moment, and for a hot minute, I convinced myself that the panels at the end of the same chapter were him either panicking or just giving up upon being found out and having that emphasized through the artwork, but looking at everything that ended up following, I don’t think that was actually meant to be the case, I think he was meant to look more deranged than sorrowful in those parts— and every other part in which this was supposed to be the opposite, that too.
This is not to say I have an issue with the artstyle itself, as that’s mostly the element emphasizing it, I believe everything could have been done so much better— with it, no less— but since this manga, and subsequently the style, has been so heavily focused on every single dark aspect that isn’t even there half the time, just like in Arthur’s interrogation by Dazai, exaggerating the wrong things to no end, that’s not the case right now. I’m not here to say Fifteen isn’t full of dark subjects and situations, it absolutely is, but they’re not everywhere all the time, and especially not in relevance of Arthur as an antagonist. I don’t know if it’s the fault of a concept that every BSD antagonist just has to invoke terror no matter what, the fault of focusing too much on Arthur’s power to the point it overshadows the character beneath it and renders him irrelevant, or the artist took some inspiration from our dearest beloved BSD anime season 3 and just decided to drag it in the same exact direction using different approaches, but needless to say, it really isn’t…that much better at the moment, and considering none of this is going to get remade, it simply won’t be.
Perhaps that’s a harsh judgement on my part, but again, the dialogue truly isn’t everything. Season 3 discarded it altogether and took their own spin on everything that was going on, ultimately creating a completely different piece of media than what Fifteen actually was, and even though the manga didn’t do the same, trying to hold onto the source material for once, I’m not going to even try to pretend that anyone would read it and come out thinking Arthur was meant to be a tragic character who found himself on the completely wrong path that ultimately led to his inevitable demise— no, everyone would immediately assume he’s a horrifying force of destruction who does everything in his own favor, no matter the cost, without any regard for anyone other than his lost partner. I am yet to see the end of the fight between him, Chuuya and Dazai, as well as the section where he reveals his past, but having seen what impact it had in BSD S3— even ignoring all the bits they cut out— I don’t have any hope that it’ll make him seem a bit more likable for those who don’t really enjoy heavily implied morally corrupt villains. And hey, I’ll admit I love those myself, but Arthur is not one of them, never was and never will be, and to portray him as such is to once again erase the very foundations of him in the original novels. I truly wouldn’t mind if that were the actual antagonist of Fifteen, but it just isn’t, and two entire adaptations so far seem to be dead set on making him into such a thing.
Honestly, with both this and S3, I’m not even surprised people are slowly starting to fall back into misinterpreting Arthur as a character completely, and although that technically never went away, from what I’ve seen, this is certainly not going to do anyone any favors. No wonder some people seem to believe he chose to become a government agent for near to no reason, had zero remorse about both his job or the events of Fifteen, is nothing more than one half of an assassin duo with nothing redeemable about either of them, and sure, I can blame this on many different things, but at this point, I’m sure these adaptations are just as responsible for it, because let’s not lie to ourselves— in a choice between reading a book, a manga or watching an anime, the first will often be people’s last resort, and while in the past, I could have dreaded a wave of anime-only people never having read the LN and running with those events as original canon, now I get to dread manga-only people as well, if not a combination of both, which is just amazing for those who want their beliefs about Arthur being a total psychopath to be solidified. Not for the rest of us, though.
Keep in mind that none of this is meant as some kind of personal attack or insult to Hoshikawa-san themselves, this is just my personal frustration with yet another thing which looked promising, but ultimately got shoved back onto the pile of Fifteen adaptations and interpretations which for some reason seem to despise Fifteen’s Arthur as a character, else he wouldn’t have been disregarded over and over.
Anyway, I hope I won’t have to come back here to add more things later because this really isn’t meant to be a dissection, but that’s my take on this whole manga so far. If I am to say something good about it for a change, at least it does actually try to keep some remains of the original LN in it, and new official art of Arthur is something I’ll begrudgingly appreciate, but I really can’t say I’m particularly overjoyed when the outcome of it won’t be much different to the outcome of S3 regardless.

According to Procreate, I worked on this for twenty-four hours. Sounds about right, and I’d be damned if I didn’t put that much effort into Arthur’s annual birthday artwork.
I honestly didn’t think I would be able to manage to draw anything this year, I was starting to come to terms with the fact that I’ll have to type up some regretful post about it despite not having failed to break my streak yet, but then I spent a few days straight working on this, and I’m so happy with both the result and the fact that once again, I made it on time. I’m not sure how when this is the end result, but I did, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Anyhow, here is a happy birthday to a character who means the whole world to me in so many ways even after years have passed, as well as another to his real-life counterpart, for whom I unfortunately didn’t have the time to do a single thing anymore. I truly wish I could find better words than last time, but I hope it is sufficient to say I’m most glad for the both of them having existed and acted as inspirations for many beyond just the BSD fandom, and I hope they’ll be such for many more years to come.
