Kirk saying this at the beginning of The Search for Spock doesn't mean a lot considering the fact that in TOS he puts his life in danger a considerable amount of times to save other people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUT !!! The fact that he ends up risking/losing three things that he considers more valuable than his own life -his son, his career and the Enterprise- and he still thinks it's worth it because Spock is back... INSANE! It's true love, baby!

Yall know the scene in those ‘coming of age’ movies, where the family is having dinner, and the dad points out that new boy to his daughter with the subtly of a freight train. And he says something about him being a good kid, that he’s talented, and then ends with something that directly aligns with what the daughter likes?
Yes. That’s concept, but it’s dinner with Spock and his parents. And Sarek is under the impression that Spock is with Kirk (not wrong), and is trying to convince him that the doctor is a better option(wrong, because he’s also dating McCoy)
“Doctor McCoy is very talented. He’s recived awards for his work I’ve heard.”
“Yes father, he excelled as a doctor before he had joined starfleet as well.”
“He also saved my life, and your own countless times”
“Yes, as was his duty as Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise”
“I noticed as well, that he has incredibly skilled hands.”
“Father I do not wish to-“

I'm watching the Star trek movies for the first time and did Kirk just say that if Spock has an eternal soul it would be his responsability as if it were his own?????????

A few paces away, Spock paused. He looked up into the deep sky. "I have been-" he said. At his strained voice, Jim moved instinctively toward him. "and always shall be...your friend." "Yes," Jim whispered. "Yes, Spock." —McIntyre, Vonda N. (1984) The Search for Spock —[insp.]

I ended 2023 with Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. New year new Spock? Is that anything?
Here are my thoughts:
Overall I liked it more than TMP but much less than WoK, which is obviously the best one of the bunch! The construction of the movie seemed pretty messy especially compared to WoK but there were a lot of interesting concepts that sort of made up for that for me!
Things I liked:
💫 Bones Bones Bones. That old cranky bastard is destined to be my favorite in every movie, isn’t he?
Tumblr media
💫 I love him carrying around Spock’s katra, I love his confession that he’s missed him, I love that he looks old and tired. I love how bravely he goes to the katra transfer ritual. He’s just doing a lot in this movie!
Tumblr media
💫 I said this in my WoK post and I’ll probably say it for every movie, I just adore seeing these characters get older. I love seeing how their bodies and faces change with time. I’m in my mid 30s (which I know isn’t that old!) and I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about aging and friendship and family and death so this aspect of Trek is really resonating with me.
Tumblr media
💫 It wouldn’t be a fight scene if Kirk didn’t launch himself at his enemies like some kind of deranged cat.
Tumblr media
💫 More Sulu!!! One thing that surprised me in TOS was how little of characters like Uhura and Sulu there was. Thrilled to see them in the movies being their awesome selves.
Tumblr media
💫 and speaking of, I loved Uhura here. Her scene where she forces that little brat into the closet is perfection.
Tumblr media
💫 Folks, if you don’t like Spirk shipping this is the wrong place for you to be. I love how sad Kirk is about Spock for most of this movie, and how happy he is to get him back. Look at that smile 😭
Tumblr media
💫 They’re in love and no one can tell me otherwise. A man doesn’t blow up his beloved ship and lose his son for a coworker.
Tumblr media
💫 Uniforms were a mixed bag here, and how I felt about them went up and down quite a lot! Initially I hated the little purple blouse Kirk wears, but once he took the jacket off and I saw the sleeves + those pants? Hello, yes, great outfit. Man looks like he’s going to Halloween as a gay little pirate and I have no complaints. I can’t find a great picture of it so just extrapolate what you can from this gif.
Tumblr media
💫 I loved the mind meld scene. It felt so full of grief for them both.
Tumblr media
And honestly there isn’t really a good way to sum up what I didn’t like about it. It just wasn’t a great movie! It was fine, and as you can see I did enjoy a lot of it! But it didn’t flow well for me.
I’m looking forward to more Star Trek in 2024!

on a much brighter note, i'm thinking about trying to write SNW-era spirk and it's difficult to do, because i cannot fathom a spock and kirk who don't already know that the other is very important to them!
like no wonder the 2009 reboots had to have a character who'd seen the old timeline (much less ambassador spock himself). can you imagine the torture of watching spock and kirk interact without knowing? without being aware of the relationship that would define them and their source materials? like goddamn no wonder you need someone to tell both of them to give the other a chance.
i try to think about SNW-era spirk and my brain immediately wants to either expand on 1x10 a quality of mercy or some sort of soulmate au. but even a soulmate au doesn't scratch the itch, because a soulmate au doesn't even manage to communicate to these characters that they will be very important!! and i can't imagine a spirk without the knowledge of their power.

imagine if spock coming back to life hadn’t really worked. he’s clearly not himself for a while but it seems to wear off within a few weeks and the arc takes place in a fairly lighthearted comedic movie.
you want khan to be wrathful? you want that to have real stakes? you want a no-win scenario? have spock come back wrong. his eyes are always a little vacant and he doesn’t find anything fascinating. his neck-pinches do more than just incapacitate you. he barely remembers his friends.
make him wrong. make him gangly. make him tilted.
kirk would be clawing at the ground to figure out what was wrong. he already sacrificed everything for spock and it wasn’t enough. what more would he be willing to do? what else is there to burn?

Do you think Prime!Spock and Prime!Pike are kicking around in the afterlife like:
Chris: So, did you-?
Spock: Ensure that Jim and I would not only meet, but become t’hy’la. Thus securing the best possible future for their timeline?
Chris: Uh… yeah. How did you know I was gonna say that?
Spock: It would seem, my old friend, although we were separated in life, our fates continue to mirror one another.
Chris: I’m sorry-
Spock: Do not be, it is good to hear your voice again.
Chris: Yeah, um, thank you, yours too.

it really goes to show how i curate my fandom experience bc i had no idea people were campaigning for 'canon' spirk in SNW
for all intents and purposes spirk is already canon. what do we gain from a love confession? from a kiss? when we already have literally ALL of star trek iii. how many times does kirk need to say that his and spock's soul are the same? was his massive sacrifice not enough, only to tell sarek that "what i have done, i had to do... if i hadn't, the cost would've been my soul." how one of the final shots in the movie is them literally MIRRORING each other.
spirk are soulmates first and they're already canonically like that in tos and the movies. it's so frustrating it's such a shallow understanding of their tos relationship. one of the beauties of it is how difficult it is to give it one label, yet it's so obvious they have a deep love and respect for each other. they are soulmates and friends and comrades and allies. they are two parts of the same soul. we've known this for decades.

Star Trek Fandom really giving me emotional whiplash with the fuck or die nights at the vulcan nightclub immediately followed by art of spock longingly gazing at a decades old holotape necklace kirk gave as a birthday present before he 'died' in an accident

Especially having now clearly understood Shatner's rubbish - This episode I have missed makes me feel oddly satisfied to see Kirk (really just Shatner) being forced to act more meek and "humbled" by the authoritative opposition.
This has very little bearing on Kirk though.
It is merely the internal commentary saying so on the actor.
This is also a great opportunity for me to examine how I will coordinate with TOS after the education I have acquired.
Perhaps it was MEANT to be for me to have accidentally skipped an entire episode of TOS - ME, to have done such, of all people...
