actually, a great last episode, even though it probably wasn't intended as such: kirk (in the form of dr lester) recounting some of his adventures with spock. saying "the man who knows the captain best in the universe" and the mind meld after which spock knows that is truly kirk. like what could possibly be so significant, yet secret that he could only verify it with a mind meld? and what a tender moment they share afterwards. it's a little sad they were only able to have this bc kirk was in a female read body, but it almost feels like roddenberry wants us to know about these two…
also very interesting that dr lester despises their (I'm just gonna use gender neutral pronouns here, don't pitchfork me) own "womanhood", which can really be read from a queer perspective and sounds a lot like a trans realisation. or, more from a feminist pov, it at least sounds like the wish womanhood didn't exclude being able to become a leader (in this case starship captain). and the undoubtly homoerotic moment between a clearly in love dr coleman and dr lester (in kirk's body) where he gently puts a hand on his shoulder. and what would be more like tos than an episode fit for pretty obvious queer reading?
and with that my vaguely analytical-turned-spirk-recap of tos has come to an end. what a rollercoaster. except not bc I plan to watch all of the og star trek movies pre-tng as well, even if my dad is only mildly excited about the prospect. so look forward to more (spirk) observations!

Here's something no one ever talks about when talking about "Turnabout Intruder"Dr. Coleman.
Everyone's so focused on Janice Lester and why she's the way she is, no one asks why the heck Coleman did what he did. The man was so weak, he did whatever Janice asked, even murder.

After three seasons, the last episode of Star Trek (TOS) aired on June 3, 1969. The series ran for 80 episodes. The episode was originally meant to air on March 28, but was pushed back due to coverage of the death of Dwight D Eisenhower. In the episode, Captain Kirk's (William Shatner) ex-lover Doctor Janice Lester (Sandra Smith) not only took over control of the USS Enterprise but took over his body as well. The events took place in the year 2269. In 2016, fans of the show voted it the 4th worst episode of the entire franchise. ("Turnabout Intruder", Star Trek TOS, TV, Event)

there’s a moment, in cold war, between clara and the doctor where she’s just spoke to skaldak on her own and she asks the doctor, “how did i do? was i alright?” and the doctor tells her, “this wasn’t a test, clara”
Tumblr media
and it just made me think—i wonder if the doctor hears clara say this to him, hears that she wants his approval, even though her life was just in danger. and i wonder if he thinks back, all those years ago, to venice. when he and rory weren’t really friends yet, when rory tells the doctor, “you know what’s dangerous about you? it’s not that you make people take risks—it’s that you make them what to impress you. you make it so they don’t want to let you down. you have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you’re around.”
Tumblr media
i wonder if that moment flashes through his mind, and i wonder if he realizes how very right rory was. i wonder if it frustrates him. i wonder if it scares him. especially with clara. because to him, clara is the girl that dies for him. every time he’s met her thus far, she’s ended up dead. forget being scared.
i bet it terrifies him.

Continuity errors in Doctor Who
I'm curious, what continuity errors do you notice in Doctor Who? Someone asked me the other day "What movie mistake is so glaringly obvious that you're surprised it made it into the final cut?", and my response was "Not sure about films, but I can name about 20 different continuity errors from Doctor Who alone".

No, because imagine this.
The 70th anniversary rolls around.
We get a Tales of the TARDIS season (series?) 2.
We get Christopher, David, Matt, Peter, and Jodie.
They get closure or 'therapy' or something.
