Early Appalachian frontiersman Alfred in buckskin circa 1790- 1810s. I’m trying to figure out how to paint like NC Wyeth digitally (so lol the background is Wyeth’s).

Gonna ramble a bit about my nor’easter au and Alfred below the cut

Following the American Revolution, Alfred is immediately sent out to squash any rebellions (like whiskey rebellion) and to partake in wars against Indigenous nations like the Cherokee. I’ll save a discussion about the Cherokee wars for another time because that’ll take a long time to explain + I’m still working on my Cherokee oc and I need to understand Cherokee history and perspective more before I go forward with talking about this topic.

Now the many of the east coast states are older than Alfred, and they mostly supported him during the revolution because they thought he’d be easy to control given at the time of the revolution he wasn’t tied down as any colony or city. However, he was a New Englander and very obviously so

He was once Plymouth colony and he grew up alongside his cousin Henry/Massachusetts, but by the time the revolution occurred, his status was unclear and he was simply living with his cousin (who’s his earliest and most fierce supporter) .

These states operated like countries and part of why the had the revolution was to continue to self-govern and maintain their regional cultures. It’s also part of why the federal government initially was rather weak. Given Alfred’s closeness to his cousin, and his very staunch New England identity, I think the states would be hesitant over a strong New England national control. And so I think they especially Jennie/NY & Rich/Virginia encouraged Alfred to leave his cousin for a while, and partake in military campaigns (+ he was good at battle).

Also Alfred was like 14, and I don’t think he’s ever been the type to sit down and do paperwork. Honestly he was always a bad student, who was far more interested in the outdoors, horses, sailing and hunting. While he won the war, and he was fine with being head of state, he still didn’t 1) have confidence in himself to make non-military related decisions 2) he just wasn’t mentally ready to take on the responsibilities and was fine deferring it to his states like Jennie, Rich, or Henry to figure out matters that weren’t military related. He was irresponsible and it would come back to bite him in the ass during the Civil War.

Alfred on a personal level it was probably good for him to get away from his overly critical cousin who can be overbearing, but also so he would get more experience to deeply get to know his states.

Also Alfred, growing up in New England, he was a little ball of rage as a kid and he has a difficult time managing his emotions. He wasn’t exactly the personable seemingly fun loving Alfred of the present. Not that he couldn’t crack a joke, but ok I’m not from New England, but in the northeast I find we’re rather cynical, un-filtered and sarcastic and tbh kind of asssholes in the way we have fun and in our humor. That’s how he was, which is like fine unless you’re trying to appeal to the rest of the nation lol which he would have to

I think his time spent in Appalachia and the south did help him learn more about his other states especially Maisie/ North Carolina. But also helped him learn more how to let go some of this intense New England rage, and how to better control his emotions. But also let loose in a way that isn’t so dark and cynical. Also I think this helped him slowly learn how to speak with less of a New England specific accent

He was also able to observe states like Rich and Carl/ South Carolina and gain an understanding of how being able to control your emotions, can help control your image and how others perceive you. So these are the origins of how he slowly began to shape and become at least in public this overly friendly happy go lucky Alfred.

I’ll save a discussion about his interactions with the Appalachian states more explicitly another time I’m just tired😴 fr rn

Hello! Even though this is more than the 3 character limit, I realize it would kind of defeat the fun and purpose of the ask to limit it. Instead, I decided to put them on a scale of most to least competitive with blurbs. Hope you like it!

Most to least competitive with a shared romantic interest (Axis and Allies)

Most

Italy: He'd constantly be around, chatting with you, being touchy feely, and overall hard to ignore. This might be his greatest advantage: you would have constant exposure to his silly ways which would make him hard to forget.

France: It was hard deciding if he'd be more or less competitive than Italy, but his means of getting your attention are far less of a resemblance to spamming. He'd rely heavily on romantic gestures, which may just do the trick.

England: In spite of his moments of self-loathing, he'd be confident enough to pursue you. He couldn't bear the thought of any of the others being with someone as lovely as you. You deserved a gentleman, and he'd be good and ready to fit that.

Germany: Even though he's more reserved and quiet, he's a go-getter. If he wanted something, he'd go by whichever means to get it ―this would include you. He'd be thoughtful about how he got your attention but would still be super nervous about his feelings for you.

America: Despite dominating nearly every conversation he's apart of, he wouldn't have the easiest time maintaining your attention. Sure, he'd be one of the first to come chat you up, but he wouldn't be the most suave with his flirting. He'd try but it may be a hit or miss.

China: Not nearly the loudest of the first half but the loudest of the last, he'd be insistent on working in time to see each other. He'd go the most mature route when it came to actually getting your attention, but when amongst the others his overall patience would run thin.

Japan: Self-assurance is something that has never been an issue for him. He wouldn't be the most successful when getting your attention in a group setting, since he's more reserved. If he was able to find you off by yourself, he'd feel confident going up and exchanging pleasentries.

Russia: He'd be slightly hopeful at first based on your interactions with him, but he'd ultimately lose steam as the others practically bulldozed their way to you. If he felt strongly enough towards you, and if you reignited his hope, he'd be ruthless. However, that'd be a big 'if'.

Canada: Unfortunately, his only real hope when competing for your love and attention would be if you were similar to him: the quiet and soft-spoken type. His confidence, when compared to the others', does not measure up in the slightest, leading to him discouraging himself.

-He is so surprised. Like, shocked.

-You have always been so cute and nice…totally didn’t expect that and at first, he thinks it is a joke.

-But Ludwig can’t say he isn’t intrigued by this new side of your personality…unless you get violent. That is a big no-no for him.

-He’ll try to bring that side of you out, not often, but mostly to understand when and with whom it comes out.

-Yeah, he will study you lol. A way to understand every shade of you.

Arthur Kirkland:

-He worries a lot!

-Not for you, for the rival obviously.

-He can recognize the aura around his partner, he and Francis often get it when they meet.

-Gonna kiss your forehead after you destroy your rival and go back home.

-He had to reprimand you in front of others because he is a gentleman, but his true self is so proud of you.

Françis Bonnefoy:

-As Arthur, he recognized the aura around you immediately.

-He has to admit that he prefers your nice and more introverted side of personality.

-Mostly because he doesn’t want you to get hurt.

-Like, it is hot how good you kick ass, but please don’t get hurt, Françis likes to wear his nurse outfit for entirely different motivations.

matthias honestly see's his darlings insecurity as fishing for compliments - normally he would shower them in verbal affection, especially if asked, but assuming that this is just after getting caught trying to escape, he's a bit pissed. "i don't know, i could probably find someone better couldn't i" yes this little shit is using his darlings moment of self consciousness as manipulative ammunition.

his darling is probably crushed at his words, matthias feels a bit bad seeing how their face falls, but it's for the best. if things go as planned, his darling will start to put more effort into the 'relationship', and stops trying to escape.

or his darling could completely shy away from him after hearing his words, smart decision, darling, if he see's how dejected they are, matthias is going to feel really bad.

he didn't mean it, min elskede!, he was just in a bad mood, it's like when you're feeling insecure and try to up and leave!. please forgive him.

it's best not to drag this out any further, and take the apology and pampering, lest matthias starts to think his darling is attempting to manipulate him, and believe me, you do not want to entirely loose his trust.

NORWAY

lukas wonders the exact same thing sometimes. he really tried to shake his obsession, it's not like he wants to be so attached to his darling but he is.

he doesn't answer his darling initially, too busy enchanting the basement to keep them from trying to escape again. this likely puts his already distressed darling on the edge, and might lead them to think he's decided to dispose of them when he doesn't come and visit for the next week.

the darlings words linger in lukas's mind; if he hadn't already kidnapped them, he might have tried to distance himself from them and focus on his responsibilities as a big brother and a country (to no avail), but he can't risk his darling going off and telling everyone about what he had done, so, in that week he decides to put his darling out of their misery.

finally, after a week, he re-emerges into the basement, with a tray of food in his hands, his darling is soiled and starving at this point, so they don't fight back when he hand feeds them the love potion infused fiskesuppe.

FINLAND

tino's heart just about breaks upon hearing his darlings words - it all makes sense now! his darling does love him, they just struggle with insecurities, that he clearly desperately needs to address.

so, if his darling doesn't like physical affection, verbal affection or being smothered, they just made the stupidest decision of their life; tino now dedicates his days to boosting his darlings self esteem. best to go along with his self love boot cam, he'll forget all previous grievances.

but assuming 10 hours of standing naked in front of a mirror complimenting themselves just creeps them out, and they still want to escape from tino's clutches; they once again try to leave when the chance presents itself.

finland goes absolutely insane, no one can calm him down when he realises his darling isn't home when he returns from the latest world meeting - after all he did for them? were they even being sincere or was it all another ploy to escape?! throw all previous trust out the window, once he gets his darling back he's going full tiger mum.

SWEDEN

"who made you think this" berwalds instantly ready to throw hands, start a war, go viking mode. it's simply incomprehensible to him that his darling doesn't adore themselves as much as he adores them.

it must be someone's elses poisonous words corrupting his darling self image, probably denmark, or maybe prussia, germany and austria, or it could be-

if berwald hadn't kidnapped his darling yet, expect to wake up in his house the next morning - clearly his darling is being horridly abused by the people they surround themselves with to think that they aren't worthy of love.

whilst he wasn't planning on pursuing a romantic relationship with his darling, and was content in his position as their guardian angel, if it's what he thinks they need, he'll do whatever he must to ensure their wellbeing.

ICELAND

here we have the angsty teenager, who immediately takes it as his darling mocking him. fine! be that way, he didn't even like them that much to begin with (lies). once he realises how immature he's being, he panics.

did he just ruin his entire relationship with his darling over his own insecurity? emil screams into his pillow when it occurs to him that his darling was being sincere. even if they weren't, he couldn't stay away from them for that long. if he wasn't already stalking them, he's picked up the habit now: they hate him so how else is he to get his fill of them?.

after a few months of being estranged, emil works up the courage to make amends. but it isn't the same, his beloved is on edge, they don't trust him like they used to. it drives him to absolute insanity loosing the closeness he once had with his darling.

he doesn't sleep, he doesn't eat, he just follows and watches them in a desperate attempt to get close to them again.

eventually, his brothers get concerned, lukas can't stand to see his baby brother so distressed, so he does what all good brothers do and puts icelands darling under a love potion. to emils horror. at first he thinks they've come around, but is quick to become suspicious of the sudden affection he's receiving.

emil will demand lukas undo the love potion, when his darling is back to their senses he's so embarrassed, he stutters apologies, as the door opens.

norway walks in with a suitcase, "here's all their stuff" "WHAT"

isn't norway a great big brother kidnapping icelands darling for him.

GREENLAND

way to reinforce kunuk's belief that he and his darling are soulmates, reader. just when he thinks his darling can't get any more perfect for him, they say this. it's kinda disturbing to see the heart eyes he gives them as they pour out their heart to him, probably sobbing too.

he immediately counters with his own belief that he isn't good enough for his darling, but he loves them so much that he's gotten past that to bring them together (kidnap them).

if anything his darling made him more attached to them, he goes from being attached at the hip with them to being their conjoined twin; if kunuk wasn't open with them before, he sure as hell is now. if he was, all boundries between him and his darling fade at this point.

kunuk also uses his darlings insecurity as a way to isolate them from others; no one understands them like he does, as no one understands him as they do, so what's the point of going to america's birthday bash when he and his darling could stay home and cuddle?

Proud of how this came out. Anyways some revolutionary war Alfred. I’ll share some thoughts I have about him in regards to my au lore beneath the cut

He’s a stubborn angry irresponsible kid from New England when the war begins, and tbh he’s like this until the American Civil War. He accepted a lot of responsibility at a young age, was rather insecure, too stubborn to really admit he needs help, and deferred a lot to his states - eventually his irresponsibility catches up with him. And he’s also later forced to change his disposition to be more friendly and diplomatic.

He barely gains the support of his own states. He was initially Plymouth colony, existed as basically nothing except as a ward of his cousin Henry/Massachusetts. The states just tbh saw him as the most neutral option amongst themselves given he has no real role & all the other states have great qualms with each other. But they do admire his commitment, and his battle expertise, and also pure strength. They do however see him as an irresponsible kid so they think he’ll be easy to control (they’re not much that older than him)

His cousin Henry is quite supportive of him and sees his potential so he’s really the one pushing Alfred forth. Alfred just agrees to appease his cousin, whom has taken good care of him up until this point. He’s a kid who accepts way too much responsibility and is way in over his head.

Alfred isn’t a stranger to war or violence prior to the Revolution. However during the revolution, I think under the guidance of General Washington he refines his battle skills and learns to better channel his anger into battle rather than being sporadic. He comes to view General Washington as a father-like figure.

Germany, as a father, he would have a routine.

Kids need consistency.

He wants them to do well.

He doesn't realize when he is being too hard and would apologize for his behavior.

He doesn't want them to fail, but he also doesn't want to be overbearing on them.

He would make sure that they're as safe as he could get them.

He would allow them to adventure and see things, but either he was with them or a bodyguard.

He feels like he needs to protect them, but at the same time, he's doing too much. He feels like he's not doing enough, and he's made mistakes. He wants to try to be perfect and make no mistakes. It bothers him when he makes mistakes. It bothers him that he isn't doing enough.

He might also read. Books on parenting? He's reading them, trying to follow the advice, and still failing. He's trying.

They have a decent amount of things in common, they both smoke, drink wine, cook, and have a love of the arts (and they’re both married to stubborn blonde men).

Italy: He'd been checking in on you periodically, mostly to chit chat, but he always commented on how cute it looked. During one of his many rambles about everything and anything, his attention drifted to how maticulous crocheting was. He'd wonder how you can do the same motions for as long as you'd been. That being said, he was looking forward to the finished result.

Once you were reaching the end of it, he'd keep popping in to ask if you were done yet and how much longer it'd be. This may be mildly irritating, but it would be his way of showing his interest and excitement in your hobby.

When you finally revealed the completed project to him, he'd fawn over how much talent you had asking if you could ever make something for him. Please make him something. He'd wear it till it fell apart. He'd share your enthusiasm in your accomplishment by offering to grab your favorite ice cream.

Denmark: Similar to Italy, he'd be drifting in and out of the room you were in, floating around you, watching the process unfold into a well-crafted item. Once knowing what you were making, he'd shoot a ton of compliments about how it looked just like it (even if it still looked like nothing). He'd start going on about how he can see your vision and how awesome it'd look upon completion.

He'd come in asking if you needed anything to drink or a snack. If you wanted something, he'd happily bring it to you, but you may notice some crums on his cheeks or a slight mustache of whatever the drink you'd requested was. He'd tell you it was just a quality check.

Seeing you light up from accomplishing your item, he'd beam at you not only out of the completion of it, but also from the joy in your eyes. He'd be so proud of you for sticking to it and would slide in a request of his own, which if you accepted it, he'd wear as much as possible.

Germany: Would enjoy sitting in whichever room you're in and doing something quietly along side you (mostly reading). He wouldn't want to disturb you while you were concentrating. If it were particularly cold that day, he'd offer you blankets. If it were a bit warm, he'd offer to open some of the windows. You should feel comfortable and relaxed after all.

He'd observe your creative process and enjoy seeing your concentrated expression on the item you were crocheting. Smiling to himself, he'd try to figure out what it was exactly you were going for. When you'd made enough progress with it, he'd be genuinely impressed. It wasn't that he doubted your abilities―you were still new to the hobby, so to see you make such quick progress was admirable.

The big reveal was the best part because he got to properly compliment your hard work. You were pleased with yourself, as you should be, and seeing you take pride in it brought a slight smile to his face. He'd really want you to make something for him but would feel rather uncomfortable asking you for it.
