It is not easy being a Miya, especially when your brothers are Osamu and Atsumu. They were volleyball prodigies and were a tag team that was nearly impossible to beat. Being the middle triplet automatically gave you middle child syndrome. You always felt like you were the forgotten one, simply because your brothers were lucky to be born as the same gender. But when it came down to it, your brothers never made you feel like you were the forgotten one, even though they were annoying as hell.
Your brothers were a constant pain in your ass, mainly Atsumu but once Osamu got going too, there was no stopping them. Atsumu was constantly teasing you and stealing your food while Osamu would purposefully mess with you in small ways like putting your favorite snack on the top shelf that you couldn’t reach. Despite all this, you loved them, you annoyed the hell out of them too because what else is family for? And not that you would ever admit it to them, but they were your inspiration. Seeing their drive and passion for volleyball (and food in Osamu’s case) made you want to excel yourself.
Of course, to one up your brothers and prove you were just as good, you played volleyball too. Unlike your brothers, you were not gifted with height so you played as libero ever since you were a little kid. Everyone who ever played with you or your brothers knew about the Miya siblings so it was no surprise at all when all three of you got into Inarizaki and started playing volleyball there. What you were not prepared for was the amount of talent at this school. Some days it felt like everyone was better than you and all you had to do was receive the ball properly and you couldn’t even do that well. Meanwhile, you knew your brothers were killing it in the adjacent gym.
The more you doubted yourself, the worse you playing got and one day while you were lost in your own head and self doubt, your coach noticed. Suffice it to say you got chewed out for doubting yourself so much and benched for the rest of the practice. To make matters worse, when you went off to fill up your water bottle you caught a glimpse of your brothers practicing and they were at the top of their game. It frustrated you to no end to know that you were never going to be as good as them, so you rushed home on your own instead of walking with them like you normally did. Your brothers returned home not long after you and went straight to your room, knowing something was off. They were absolutely stunned to see you sitting quietly on your bed with tears streaming down your face.
Osamu was the first to move and sat on your bed right next to you, placing a hand on your shoulder. “What’s up?” For some reason his question only made you cry harder. “Samu! Leave her alone, yer only making it worse!” Atsumu seated himself on the opposite side of you and looked around, not quite knowing what to say.
Both your brothers sat there, waiting for you to speak up first, Osamu kept his hand on your shoulder and rubbed it soothingly. When your crying finally died down to small sniffles you opened your mouth to speak. “I had a rough day at practice” Osamu hummed knowingly while Atsumu threw a tissue in your direction.
“What d’ya do?” Atsumu inquired as you wiped your tears off.
“I just kept getting stuck in my head, thinking I’m not good enough, ya know? And the coach noticed and chewed me out, sayin I wasn’t putting my all in and I needed to improve more if I wanted to stay as a regular player”
“EXCUSE ME??”  You were very surprised to hear Atsumu get so upset, usually he was the one who chewed you out about not playing well.
“You know yer a good player, why were you doubting yerself?” Osamu asked while Atsumu still tried to find the right words.
“I don’t know...I just see you two playing and I feel like I’m...not as good?”
“What the hell are ya doin comparin yerself to us?? Yer way better than us anyway” Atsumu finally spoke up again and his loud voice was ringing through your ears. But quite honestly you were confused, you always figured your brothers were the better players, it seemed they both could tell you didn’t believe what they were saying so Atsumu continued.
“Yer a monster at receives, I don’t even bother with them since I need to set and we both Samu sucks at volleyball anyway-” Osamu smacked him on the head and interrupted your younger brother.
“Listen, yer a great player and we all have off days. Don’t let them affect yer playing and stop comparing yerself to us. I used to do that with you and it always messed up my spikes, Tsumu does the same thing” You honestly couldn’t believe that your brothers had the same line of thinking as you did, that simple statement was enough to make you instantly feel better. Your brothers, who you assumed were in a whole different league than you, had actually admired you and looked up to you all this time.
You finally smiled at them and they both perked up at your changed demeanor. Your brothers may get on your nerves all the time but they really do care about you and would do anything to make sure you’re happy. The three of you went back and forth talking about how you envy each other’s volleyball skills and you all laughed at how similar you really were. I guess that’s what happens when you’re triplets.
