bubbly s/o opens up about trauma pt. 1
bakugou katsuki & shouto todoroki x gn!reader
word count: 1.8k
requested by anon: Katsu, Sho, Izu, and Eiji headcanons to their bubbly, and sweet crush, and close friend, opening up to them about being abused by their parents growing up? They've gotten therapy and are living with their Grandparents but sometimes they get upset when someone brings up parents or asks about the scars from abuse. They tell them they shared this with them because they refused to lie to them. They hug him close, thanking him for being a good friend. -Morp
[a/n: i hope you don’t mind that I’m doing it in parts anon! i ended up doing scenarios for each one, i'm a bit rusty so i apologize if this isn't very well done. you can read part 2 [ here ] ,thank you for requesting sweet heart! here you go! - yours truly, bunny -`ღ´- ]
TW: mentions of parental abuse & scars, nothing explicit but implied

To an extent, he always knew. Maybe not the specifics, but whenever you were alone and thought no one was paying any attention, you’d let your guard down. The metaphorical sparkle in your eyes would dim, your shoulders would slump as if you were taking a break. Then someone would approach and in the blink of an eye, the sparkle was back and the familiar grin on your lips was present once again. Despite what others may think, Bakugou was a good friend.
He worried about you. A lot.
That may be due to the fact that he has a huge crush on you, but it was unlikely. He values your friendship so much. He’d rather have you as a friend than anything else, really. That was mainly his insecurity talking though. He just thought he wasn’t good enough for you. No one was, really. But that’s besides the point.
He had never explicitly said anything about his feelings for you but he didn’t need to. It was quite clear through his actions. Well...clear to everyone but you, that is. Even Aizawa had caught on. And he couldn’t care less about his students’ love lives. He’s had his fill of teenage angst and drama.
During training, he’d always make sure your water bottle was full or during lunch he’d keep an eye out and make sure you were eating. Sometimes he’d even give you extra pieces of meat from his plate, or if he had veggies he knows you like, he’d wordlessly place them into your rice bowl.
Now this wasn’t one sided at all. You also had your ways of looking out for him.
If you were doing a convenience store run with Sero and you saw the particular snack that Bakugou likes, you’d instantly grab a few. For his birthday, you had gotten him custom earplugs for quirk training. It had been after you and him were paired to spar against each other, he always insisted on not holding back against you out of respect, and you had experienced one of his full blown attacks head-on. Your ears were ringing for about half an hour before you could somewhat hear again, and even then, everything was a bit muffled.
Needless to say, you were worried about his hearing
He scoffed and rolled his eyes when he unwrapped the box. Scolding you for wasting money on something he had no use for.
He always uses them though. Especially when he’s doing stamina training, and it’s explosion after explosion.
Anyways. He notices your strange behavior, one day. You stopped trying to keep up the façade and you were sort of gloomy all day. He was absolutely pissed that no one had noticed the change, and he’d yell at them later for it, but he kept his cool and waited until he could be alone with you.
It had been around 8pm, just an hour before his bedtime, when he made some tea for the both of you and carried it up to your dorm room. He paused in front of your door, looking down at both his hands, a mug in each one, then looking at the door handle. Realizing he won't be able to physically open the door by himself, he awkwardly bumped the door with his elbow.
“Hey idiot, it’s me. Open the door.” He grumbled quietly, frowning when you hadn’t responded. Before he could repeat himself a little more aggressively, the muffled sound of your sniffling made his stomach drop. Panic rising throughout his body as he made up worst case scenarios in his head.
“(Y/n), seriously. Is everything okay?” All attempts to sound calm failed as his voice betrayed him, trembling the slightest bit.
On the other side of the door, you started to panic. Furiously wiping any evidence of tears or snot from your face before you slumped over to the door, turning the lock and tugging it open to reveal a frowning Bakugou. He wasn’t upset, he was worried. It was evident in his red irises.
“Here. Drink it before it gets cold.” He handed you a mug before walking past you and into your room. He admired the decor everytime he was in there, no matter how many times he had seen it already, it never failed to make his heart warm. You had a wall full of pictures of yourself with your friends. There were a few solo photos of your friends as well. Most were candid shots, there were a fair few of him.
It always reminded him that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. You cherished those candid photos because in your eyes, when your friends were carefree and themselves, no poses, no facade, that’s when they were their most beautiful.
He took a seat on your bed and patted the space beside him. Nudging the door shut, you made your way over and got comfortable.
“What’s up with you today? You seemed...not yourself.”
You didn’t respond, opting to take a sip of your tea. He knew there was something up and he wasn’t gonna push you. So he leaned back and got comfortable, waiting until you were ready. It was a solid three minutes of silence before you took a deep breath.
“I-I don’t want to lie to you, Katsuki. It just wouldn’t be fair so uhh, yeah. Here goes.” He could tell that this was overwhelming for you so, wordlessly, he put down his mug and held his hand out to you and you grasped it, like it was a lifeline.
And you told him.
You told him about the abuse from your own parents. He felt his blood boil as you showed him a few scars inflicted by your parents’ quirks. You explained that it was the anniversary of the day you ran away and went to live with your grandparents, and how you had been seeing a therapist on the regular since then.
It pained him to see you struggle through the tears, hiccuping a few times as you attempted to catch your breath. You didn’t even have to say it but he could see it, it was an all too familiar feeling to him. He tugged you to him, letting go of your hand and pulling you into his chest, his arms wrapping you up in a warmth that made the stinging tears return.
“You know, this doesn’t make me think less of you. You’re not weak. Those bastards don’t realize how bad they screwed up. You’re strong, and they’re gonna regret every goddamn choice they’ve made when they see how far you’ll go.”
“Thank you.” You whimpered as you gave in to the new wave of tears, hooking your arms around his shoulders. “Thank you…”
If anyone asks, no...he wasn’t crying. (He was though.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anyone was familiar with the signs of abuse, it was him.
It hurt him so much knowing that you had gone through what he did, maybe not to the same extreme but you had experienced it nonetheless.
He admired you though. Despite whatever happened to you, you were always bright. Always in a good mood and always choosing to see the good in people. He knows that he didn’t have the strength to do that. Maybe eventually, but not so soon. He had never wanted to pry. You guys were friends, practically best friends and he trusted that you’d tell him when you were ready.
To his knowledge, no one knew. No one mentioned the way you’d flinch around sudden movements or when someone raised their voice. Honestly, it was a wonder that you had even befriended Iida. He was the epitome of loud and sudden. Always waving his arms around at the randomest times and always shouting to chastise someone for breaking a rule.
He noticed that you tended to cover up your torso often. Never really wearing anything more revealing than a normal t-shirt. Even on the class trip to the beach, you insisted on staying covered up. No one questioned it, chalking it up to insecurity. Even during training when everyone had to wear their gym uniform, while others undid the top part and wrapped it around their waist, being clad in a tank top or sports bra, you had always kept it on. Even when it was extremely hot. More often than not, he found himself resting his palm against your forehead to cool you off.
It hadn’t been very hot, but Aizawa decided to run everyone ragged with combat training, so everyone was partnered up. Todoroki had been partnered with Denki and you had been paired up with Eijirou.
As he sat with his classmates, watching the two of you spar, he was quite impressed. Not that he doubted your skill but both fighting styles were drastically different. Eijirou and his quirk relied on close combat while your quirk worked best with long-range. He could see the frustration on your face when Eijirou kept charging towards you and engaging in hand to hand.
As the fight went on, Kirishima had hardened his forearm and hand, kinda like a makeshift blade and as he took you down, he had accidentally cut the top of your gym uniform. As the dust settled and the both of you got up, the tear in your clothes allowed the whole class to see your back and shoulders, skin littered with scars. All were different in size, color, severity, etc.
Everyone was stunned silent, not having expected anything like this.
“(Y/n)...what happened?” You could feel the breeze on your back and the pity in Kirishima’s eyes made you angry.
Everyone suddenly snapped into realization. Various questions of; ‘who did that to you?’, ‘where did those come from?’ and whatnot were shot at you from different directions. He could see you slowly being overwhelmed by everything. His heart dropped as he made eye contact with you, your eyes tired and filled with tears.
“That’s ENOUGH!” Everyone froze and looked at Todoroki with wide eyes, his voice booming.
Sensing the tension starting to rise, Aizawa sighed.
“Alright everyone settle down. Training is over, get back to class. (Y/n). A word.”
Reluctantly, Todoroki followed the boys into the locker room and changed into his school uniform.  When everyone was out and he returned outside to the training grounds, you and Aizawa weren’t there so he had gone back to the locker rooms. He knocked and called out to you.
“Can I come in?” He heard a meek ‘yeah.’ So he carefully made his way inside.
There you were, dressed in your school uniform and sat on a bench with your face buried in your hands, shoulders shaking.
“(Y/n)...” He gently placed a hand on your shoulder, he winced when you looked up at him. IIt ached him to see your beautiful eyes tainted by tears.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner Sho…” Your bottom lip quivered.
“Please, don’t apologize.” He opened his arms. You stood up and basically collapsed into them, clutching onto the back of his blazer. “Just always remember that I may understand more than anyone else will. I’ll never judge you, you know that right?”
“I know…It’s just, ugh-” You pulled away and wiped the tears from your face. “I don’t want anyone to change how they look at me because of what my parents did to me and when everyone saw, and they were asking all of their questions, their eyes...they were just full of pity.”
“Then look into mine.”
And when you did, you didn’t see pity.
You saw admiration. You saw belonging. Love. Understanding.
“Nothing will ever change with me, (Y/n).” He pressed his forehead against yours, “I will always be here for you.”

things that piss me off about dabi and fans’ reactions to this arc:
-Dabi is definitely, absolutely not justified in going after Shouto (who deserves none of this!! this boy deserves only love and support and some gotdamned therapy) ima just say that now.
-It’s also shitty of Dabi to say he didn’t care if Natsuo was hurt/killed.
-The canon characterization may very well be Dabi is so far down the path of revenge and has spent so long suffering alone away from his family members that he no longer cares for them/feels anything and is willing to proceed with plans to hurt Endeavor even if they are caught in the crossfire. However, I also feel it’s worth mentioning that right now, he very much seems to be caught up in a manic episode/meltdown/basically losing his shit. Think about it- he’s spent however many years plotting this moment and his chance to get revenge on his father and expose him to the world is finally here, and I think the likelihood that he’s saying whatever shit he thinks will hurt everyone the most is likely. That, or he’s so caught up in the mania he’s just lashing out at fucking everything. I think to some extent he means it, because he’s shown signs of being severely depressed and there’s a numbness that comes with that, but I also think deep down there is still some care there, even if small, or at least some acknowledgment that the other members of his family aren’t the main target and source of his suffering. He literally hasn’t seen them in years and it’s easy to say ‘I don’t care’ when it’s not to their faces. (Why send a tape specifically to Rei and keep track of her? Why not hurt Shouto at the summer camp when he so easily could have?) I think it’s also clear he didn’t mean to kill Endeavor with the previous Nomu attacks, but wanted him to succeed (in a ‘Build him up bigger so when I bring him down he falls even harder’ type of way. After all, Dabi obviously wanted to be the one to take down Endeavor, not a random Nomu.) Again, shitty he didn’t care that Natsuo/Shouto got caught up in it, but I think he didn’t think Natsuo would die due to Endeavor saving him. (Again, that doesn’t justify it, and is some twisted logic, but this is complicated.)
-I want to make very clear I’m not absolving Dabi of his actions, but as an abuse victim and someone who’s intimately familiar with familial abuse, his actual feelings do not make him a bad person and are actually more common than you’d think if you’ve never experienced abuse. When you’re suffering that kind of trauma for so long, you lash out at and feel angry at other people in the household, even other targets of abuse, because your abuser fucks you all up so bad and turns you against each other (even if not intentionally). It becomes a sick competition for attention even from a person who’s horrible and terrible. Dabi undoubtedly felt like he’d been thrown away and jealous of Shouto, the ‘perfect child’ Endeavor finally succeeded in getting (again, this doesn’t excuse him actually hating Shouto, but I can see why he might feel bitter). In a perfect world he would’ve dealt with those feelings with therapy and realized Shouto was just as much a victim and not murder attempts, but this is bnha lmao. Him wanting to hurt Shouto- a fucked up urge, but in a trauma-inducing environment as a mentally ill teenager, you can understand why he felt it. Acting on it is what’s truly fucked up. I also find it unlikely he doesn’t care for Natsuo at all. Natsuo, who he went to specifically for comfort for his whole childhood, not even his mother but his brother?
-At first glance, it may seem many “fanon” interpretations of Dabi are now ‘invalid’ or whatever but I disagree. Sure, we do know that he wasn’t secretly skulking about watching out for his siblings from the shadows- clearly. But narratives that involve him reconnecting with his siblings, remembering or learning to care for them again, realizing he’s hurting them and he isn’t the only one with trauma, reconnecting with his want to protect them as his family, etc. still make sense. People are not static. They still hold the capacity for change and healing given the proper circumstances. Most fanfic are AUs, given they don’t follow canon exactly and word for word, and characters can make different decisions and feel differently if different events happen. Even if you do want to write a very different characterization for Dabi, that’s fine, especially if bnha ultimately ends up doing the whole Todoroki narrative dirty.
-In conclusion: yes, currently Dabi is acting a madman and doing some very reprehensible things. He is a severely traumatized individual who grew up in a home involving copious amounts of violence. However, I do not think the point of all this family drama is just to say “fuck it, Touya’s dead now he was too far gone whoops! But heroes are good anyway!” I think it’s likely we’ll get some scene with him arrested and being confronted by Rei or Natsuo or something along those lines and see some regret. (Why spend so much time on this arc and show their reactions if they aren’t going to be involved at all?) Simultaneously, it’s also possible the story will go the “he’s too far gone” route and basically have him end up as a mirror of Endeavor: so obsessed with his own trauma he threw his own family under the bus for his own revenge plan. While possible, I think that’s a shitty and lazy way to go and disrespectful to Touya himself as an abuse survivor. He is definitely extremely deep in his revenge right now, but I do not want that to be the end of his character.
-I want Dabi to have to face up to his own actions. I want him to realize he fucked up and hurt people he shouldn’t have. I don’t think we’ll get some mushy apology montage, but we have not once seen all the Todoroki siblings together at one time, and I want Dabi to have to deal with the repercussions of seeing his family again and realizing oh, they were never the ones I should have hurt, and I don’t think he’s too far gone to do that.
-I think it’ll be really shitty if Dabi, an abuse survivor, is ultimately depicted as the insane lunatic that needs to be put down and has no chance for any kind of redemption while his abuser who bought his wife for eugenics and neglected/abused his entire family gets to walk free with a shitty redemption arc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m aware Dabi is a villain and as such is going to be on the losing side in a story where heroes win (I mean, it’s technically all a flashback from number one hero Deku) but he still has very valid points about hero society and how fucked up Endeavor truly was, and throwing it all away would be such a cop out. If bnha does truly go with the most insulting route for Dabi I feel it shows a lack of understanding for abuse and abuse survivors and fanfic authors are justified in ignoring and changing that for fics, especially if they’re abuse survivors themselves. I guarantee they’ll write better narratives about abuse lmao.
-Lastly: Dabi is a morally grey character. He’s a villain. But people who like his character or want to look at the why and how of his actions in a nuanced way are not just ‘dumb villain stans’ or whatever weird shit the bnha fandom has come up with. We just want this narrative to actually make some goddamned sense. Dabi’s actions are not all justified but do make sense in the context of his backstory and motivations and current mental state, I just hope to god hori doesn’t ruin it completely from here.
Edit: this post is also highly likely imo and also explains Dabi’s behavior (but as a reminder for those who don’t read closely, explaining something is not the same thing as justifying it.) “I can’t feel anything anymore” is a hallmark of being depressed/suicidal and his supposedly not caring for his siblings anymore most likely has to do more with his own suicidal state than aggression towards them. Dabi acting as manic as he has these last few chapters makes sense if he isn’t planning on living.

BnHA Chapter 244: Have You Read This Book
Previously on BnHA: Deku visited his mom on New Year’s Eve and was all “here’s a new letter from my ever-expanding fanclub of adorable preschoolers whom I saved from trauma” and Inko was all, “I’M SO PROUD OF YOU IZUKU I FEEL LIKE I DON’T HAVE TO PROTECT YOU ANYMORE” because she doesn’t watch the news at all or keep track of ominous plot developments I guess. The next morning, a.k.a. New Year’s Fucking Day, while other kids their age visited shrines or sat at home watching TV, Izuku, Shouto, and Katsuki were bussed off to go be child soldiers at Endeavor’s hero agency. Katsuki was all “HEY ENDEAVOR YOU’RE KIND OF A DICK,” and Endeavor was all “SHOUTO IS THIS VULGAR AND PUGNACIOUS YOUTH REALLY YOUR FRIEND” and Shouto was all “TOO LATE DAD, YOU SAID!!” and Endeavor hmmphed and booked it out of there and the kids all followed him and there was this old dude with a beard floating around screaming about END TIMES!! and Hawks was there and, what?? Seriously does anyone actually know what’s going on?
Today on BnHA: Endeavor chases down the old man (who may in fact be an actual prophet, though? Horikoshi what games are you playing) and sets him on fire and tackles him and it’s all very violent. Hawks then appears out of nowhere and breaks up BakuDeku’s tag team effort all “SAVE IT FOR THE MOVIE YOU TWO!” and is then all “hi Shouto” and “hi, you must be Midoriya, Tokoyami told me all about you, I wanted to work with you too, BUT -- [stares off angstily into the distance].” Then, because I forgot that Hawks never shuts up, he’s all, “Hey Endeavor have you ever heard of this book, ‘Paranormal Liberation Front’? Don’t let the really dumb-sounding title put you off, it’s actually a rousing tale full of hidden clues about all the bullshit I’m actually up to. I highlighted the relevant portions if you can’t be assed to read it, well anyways, Hail Hydra.” “Well that was a strange conversation,” Endeavor thinks to himself as he stares uncomprehendingly into the void. Sob someone please help them why are they so bad at this oh god.
(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity immediately afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)
so thanks to that little stunt Horikoshi pulled two weeks ago, our chances of finding out Bakugou’s hero name any time within the next dozen chapters are slimmer than ever. probably he’ll reveal it at the end of the arc instead. it’s like he doesn’t even care about the databook. whatever I’ll have plenty of time to sulk more about it after I get to readin’
anyway the title of the new chapter is “Recommendation”, so... actually that does sound fairly promising, though? am I just eternally doomed to get my hopes up? is this referring to Shouto pestering his dad to take on his two best friends as fellow interns? what’s going on here
anyway so we’re opening with this
Tumblr media
I love that it’s the two supposed goody-two-shoes kids who are actually being vocal about blatantly disregarding Endeavor’s orders. Shouto is just not having it to begin with, whereas Deku at least is trying to rationalize his own reckless behavior. Katsuki meanwhile is too focused on doing this fancy kick move to switch his suitcase from his left hand to his right to bother talking right now. reminds me of him playing with the soccer ball as a youngling
also the fact that his case is number 17 and Deku’s is number 18. have I talked about this before? I think I have but it was with some other numbered thing. anyways love the symbolism of him trying to stay one step ahead of him and Deku always being right on his heels. or maybe I’m reading too much into it but anyways rivals, yay
damn Endeavor is really determined to get ahead of them though
Tumblr media
uh oh Horikoshi how much action did you pack into this chapter. starting to run out of time to finish all your panels again huh. you had a whole extra week! how fucking insane is this arc going to be holy shit
anyways Endeavor way to leave your brand new interns behind minutes after meeting them for the first time smdh. this is exactly how it went down with Hawks and Tokoyami
Tumblr media
okay so like, I know a flash fire is an actual thing, but for a second I started wondering if in this kind of context (with him speeding off), it might also be a reference to the DC hero. then I remembered that the name of Endeavor’s technique is different in Japanese and the pun probably doesn’t translate. ah well
anyways dude is fast. but I wouldn’t count the kids out yet, they’re all pretty fast too!
so now we’re back downtown with Old Man Doom And Gloom, and oddly enough it seems that this isn’t actually an out-of-the-ordinary occurrence?
Tumblr media
fucking quirk society. you guys are just so desensitized to the most bizarre fucking things. but I guess we in the 21st century are hardly ones to talk ourselves sigh
anyway now he’s being a bit more extra than usual and they’re starting to worry
Tumblr media
?? the fuck is that? that sure as hell isn’t Hawks or Endeavor lmao. IF IT’S SLIDIN’ GO I SWEAR TO GOD
or wait, is it still the old man talking? should I actually be paying attention to his ramblings, my bad
Tumblr media
is that a fucking Spirit Bomb
(ETA: in truth this is the most badass attack name that has ever existed or will ever exist and I should give it its proper due actually.)
so now I guess he’s hurtling it at them??
Tumblr media
...hold up one sec
“revelations from the universe, I have received. flee, flee good citizens. the Dark Lord’s lips curl into a wicked crescent” -- holy shit, this all tracks?? IS THIS DOOMSDAY CRACKPOT MOTHERFUCKER ACTUALLY RIGHT ON THE FUCKING MONEY HOLY SHIT. ARE YOU A WITCH GOOD SIR. DID YOU WRITE A BOOK OF HIGHLY ACCURATE AND DEVASTATINGLY WITTY PROPHECIES BY ANY CHANCE
“the end is nigh! the wicked stars are conspiring against us! we must stop them! the earth is on the verge of being engulfed by darkness! flee, my fellow citizens! I am the one who shall destroy this source of darkness! be revealed! servants of the dark lord, come forth!”
okay listen. if he’s aiming this fucking thing at Hawks, though, after a speech like that? fuck it, I’m a believer. I’m sorry old man, I wrote you off without a second thought and here you are being the only one who’s actually like “HELLO!!!? PEOPLE!!!? THE LEAGUE OF VILLAINS!!?! THEY HAVE AN ARMY!!? AND NOUMUS!??! FUUUUUUUUCK”
and I don’t know where you’re getting your information, but those are some legit-ass universe revelations. fucking even talks about the “Dark Lord” specifically only describing his lips. because he doesn’t have anything else to describe nowadays, face-wise. shit that is spooky
anyway so that sure was unexpected. let’s see what shenanigans Master Roshi here is gonna get himself into next
Tumblr media
did my boy just get fucking flashfired. jesus Endeavor show some fucking mercy
...
Tumblr media
someone want to explain to this man the concept of a proportionate response? anyone? ...
Tumblr media
fucking Todorokis I swear to god. if they weren’t all so good at being amazing superheroes, they could easily fall back on a career of being dramatic bitches for hire instead
anyways when did Endeavor change his clothes. this dude was wearing a turtleneck and slacks thirty seconds ago. did he literally just burn them off. how. what. fucking plot holes left and right
lol imagine if like on the next page the interns finally catch up and they’re like holding his fucking jacket and looking peeved
-- holy fucking shit, Endeavor
Tumblr media
not cool, dude!! what the fuck. this isn’t a fucking Noumu for fuck’s sake THAT IS A HUMAN PERSON
(ETA: I guess he ended up being okay, but shit, for a moment it looked like we were going full blown Raiders of the Lost Ark over here. anyways the moral of this story is that Endeavor is terrifying, fuck.)
so now of course Nostradamus is trying to get the fuck out of there, because if he sticks around Endeavor apparently has no qualms about burning him alive. fuck me Endeavor, I’m still rooting for your redemption arc my dude, but tbh if Dabi happens to pop up out of nowhere here looking for some revenge I’m not gonna say no to it right now. quit burning people alive!!
so now 12/21/2012 is zooming down an alley and Endeavor is zooming after him and telling some extra with a sword to stay and lead the evacuation
oh??
Tumblr media
Endeavor have you flown yourself right into a trap?
oh my god what the fuck is this
Tumblr media
it’s like Dabi VS the Liberation Army all over again. fucking check all these motherfuckers who apparently want to get themselves deep fried. this one guy really thinks he’s going to clock the Number One with a piece of fucking PVC pipe
LMAOOOOO
Tumblr media
LOOKS LIKE WE GOT OURSELVES A RUCKUS, BOYS! you better believe I have the Powerpuff Girls theme song playing in my head right now
-- !!!
Tumblr media
HAWKS!! I WAS STARTING TO WONDER IF YOU REALLY WERE THERE TOO OR IF THE PANELS IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER WERE DELIBERATELY MISLEADING
LOOOOOOL
Tumblr media
pour one out for these poor sobs who somehow got themselves caught up in an accidental pincer attack between the dynamic fucking duo and fucking Angry Bird here. where the fuck is Shouto btw. or is he the one that got stuck carrying Endeavor’s jacket
loool look at Hawks out here making friends
Tumblr media
SURPRISE BITCH
oh my god though you guys look at this??
Tumblr media
HELLO SURPRISE NEW FAVORITE SERIES OF PANELS, CAN I JUST TAKE A MOMENT TO LOVE ON YOU A BIT HERE, BECAUSE
1. Bakugou and Deku IN PERFECT SYNC, not even thinking about it. just effortless. that was an amazing tag team thing you guys had going on before SOMEONE stepped in and ruined it all omg. do you want me to talk to Hawks for you. I’ve been meaning to discuss some other things with him anyway so it’s not like it’d be going out of my way. can you believe this fucking pigeon blocked my number. WHERE IS JEANIST YOU BASTARD
anyways 2. “I thought Endeavor might have been in a tough spot” that’s a funny way of saying “I was lonely and missed my angry arson dad”! and fucking look at this ridiculous bantering between them. “did it look like I was in a tough spot?” I FUCKING CAN’T YOU GUYS PLEASE STOP
and 3. Shouto just watching. is he impressed by his dad? or just trying to figure out whether Hawks is his dad’s adopted son or boyfriend. I’m pretty sure it’s the former, Shouto, but I don’t blame you for being confused, Hawks just has that kind of energy with everyone
oh my god
Tumblr media
somebody arrest this man. I can’t fucking deal with your cheeky fucking face Hawks
is Skeptic getting all of this?? are they sitting there with bowls of popcorn back at the League of Pliff HQ trying to figure out whether Endeavor and Hawks are dating
...and shit, I just realized the League officially knows now that the disaster trio is interning with the number one. so that’s fucking great. not that it would have been a secret for long, but still, things are officially starting to get real. in hindsight, after the Kamino arc we had a nice long stretch of chapters in which Deku, Kacchan, and Shouto were not in immediate danger from the main fucking villains, so that was nice while it lasted I guess. those days will soon be behind us
ahhhklkljkl
Tumblr media
fucking shit Hawks could you be any more ominous. oh my god this arc really is going to kill me
so now we’re cutting away to somewhere. Pliff?
-- oh, nope, still in the same place, we just fast-forwarded to the part where the police came to haul all the bad guys away
and now the manga is being all clever and foreshadowing-y and would you look at this
Tumblr media
BUT IS HE TALKING ABOUT ENDEAVOR, OR HAWKS omg. or hell, he could even be talking about Deku. or AFO even though he’s not actually there. point is, you know he’s not actually wrong. but what is he actually trying to tell us ahhhhhh Servant of the Stars please reveal your secrets
(ETA: in all seriousness you guys, I’m fully down for counting this as a prophecy. it’s already canon that future-seeing quirks are a thing, so. the only problem is that this is some Game of Thrones-level ambiguity as far as who he’s actually talking about. it seriously could be anyone. anyways at least we’ve got some shiny new theory material to play around with here so that’s nice.)
LMAO
Tumblr media
HAWKS YOU BASTARD, JUST LIKE THAT I’VE FORGIVEN YOU FOR THE FUCKING JEANOCIDE
how does every single person Deku meets not greet him this way?? I sure as hell would. “well if it isn’t the kid who just. fuckin blew up his own hands on live television, multiple times. salutations”
anyways where’s Katsuki, the boy whose previous hero mentor you murdered in cold blood but he doesn’t actually know that yet. when are we gonna start in on that?
Hawks says he’s heard about Deku from Tokoyami. and he even says he would have liked to work with Deku too, wow. that’s high praise
ffffff here it comes, THAT GOOD HAWKS ANGST. WE WERE WAITING FOR THIS BUT IT’S STILL BRUTAL GAH
Tumblr media
is this entire arc just going to consist of Hawks saying cryptic things with double meanings known only to him and then glancing sideways at the camera all broodingly omg
AH, THERE HE IS
Tumblr media
Katsuki’s natural instinct to dislike 100% of newcomers on sight might work out to his advantage here. Hawks’s maxed-out Charisma stats VS Katsuki’s middling Perception stats which nonetheless have a tendency to land high whenever he performs an ability check! I might need to back off from this metaphor though before it becomes really obvious that I don’t actually play D&D
lol
Tumblr media
omg Endeavor can’t a guy just drop in on his grumpy pal out of the blue to make sure he’s doing okay without having some sort of ulterior motive? why are you so sure that Hawks showing up means that plot must be happening. because you’re not wrong, is the thing. but he’s probably just being standoffish for show
holy shit and now Hawks is just pulling out the Liberation Army’s book just like that?? IS HE ALLOWED TO DO THAT
(ETA: “let’s see, what’s a subtle way I can try and clue Endeavor in on the fact that I’ve become an undercover agent in the Paranormal Villain League of Liberation Front Armies. ... ...shit I’m not good at this.”)
Tumblr media
and since when was this book called “Paranormal Liberation Front”?? did they change the title to match the new name?
and what’s Hawks’s game here, though? is he going to play it as though he’s secretly investigating Pliff? you know, like he actually is doing? is this some kind of hiding in plain sight thing or what
Tumblr media
guys. is Hawks just... actually really bad at being a secret agent. omg
so he’s all “DESTRO’S IDEALS ARE EVERYTHING WE COULD ASK FOR” and lol what. fucking look at Endeavor’s face though
Tumblr media
this motherfucker could use a boost of his own wisdom stats, fff
(ETA: swear to god he’s two seconds away from a Katsuki-style “hah?!”)
oh my god
Tumblr media
fucking fuck me. he better have highlighted a really obvious section of that book, because otherwise I’m not gonna hold out hope for this message getting across at all. at least we know what that “recommendation” title was referring to now I guess
(ETA: Endeavor: [reading the highlighted section backwards] “‘‘it’s fun to smoke marijuana’!? what in the --”)
loooool
Tumblr media
the fate of the world now rests upon Endeavor’s abilities to See Underneath The Underneath and somehow decipher that when Hawks says, “ENDEAVOR I CHASED YOU DOWN IN ORDER TO GIVE YOU A COPY OF THIS BOOK THE VILLAINS WROTE, I THINK IT’S REALLY KEEN AND YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT”, what he’s really saying is, “ENDEAVOR I NEED YOU TO INVESTIGATE THIS SUSPICIOUS ‘LIBERATION FRONT’ THAT’S BEEN COINCIDENTALLY GATHERING A LOT OF ATTENTION SINCE THAT SHADY INCIDENT IN DEIKA CITY WHERE ‘TWENTY GUYS' BASICALLY DESTROYED AN ENTIRE TOWN. IF YOU’RE TOO DENSE TO PICK UP ON ANY OF THAT, I HIGHLIGHTED THE RELEVANT PORTION OF THE BOOK SO HOPEFULLY EVEN AN OBLIVIOUS DUMBBELL LIKE YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT.” jesus christ
at least Endeavor now has some nerdy interns who fucking love to read. hell, Deku has probably already read the book. please help this dumb jock to understand his bird son’s coded message, Deku-Wan Kenobi, you’re our only hope
and that’s the end of the chapter! except that I heard there was a new poster for Heroes Rising that was released as well! how come it wasn’t included here now I have to go hunt it down
son of a bitch is this really the best quality that’s available? damn
Tumblr media
well all right. not really much going on here that’s a big revelation or anything, aside from the surprise inclusion of Hawks in the upper right hand corner. did we know he was going to be in this? and like, even if the anime does make it as far as his debut in season 4, will it have reached that point by the time the movie premieres in December? glad I caught up beforehand if they’re gonna start spoiling things like this
so that’s all she wrote for this week! databook is due out next week so that should be fun! we’re finally going to get Hawks’s real name from what I understand. so I can start yelling at him using his full name like a disappointed mom. I have a feeling that’s going to come in handy a lot during this arc. go to your room young man
(ETA: and just watch it be the Japanese equivalent of “Judas McMurder” or some shit. smh. y’all. we stan a shady bitch.)

and I still don’t know how I even survive
Tododeku day 3: fears.
Thanks for reading! I worked really hard on this.
The nightmares started later than Shouto expected.
He remembered the lessons from class when he was younger - nightmares were ugly, dark enigmas of being that bloomed under heavy physical, emotional, and mental trauma. Shouto laughed to himself that day, as he had all three to worry about. His father was far from the nicest man in the world, or the greatest dad, and Shouto’s therapist even told him to expect nightmares, and expect horrifying ones. It wasn’t even Shouto’s fault - his stupid father and his stupid excuse for ‘training’. He certainly didn’t want to be a military man like him, and Shouto still doesn’t plan on going into the military.
He didn’t care if other people do, he just didn’t want to. His father ingrained in him everything negative about that, so he just refused to think about it for most of his childhood. That was just the mental trauma. That training included physical stuff as well - stuff you would only find in boot camps. Shouto hated it with every fibre of his being - the sick taste of vomit in his throat and his muscles completely at fire was a common routine for him at age five. His mother tried to stop his father from hurting him so bad, but got hurt in the process, branding Shouto with a burn on his left side for the rest of life.
Way to go. Just add more depressing points to your tragic life presentation.
Yet, the nightmares didn’t start until he was around twenty, and he felt his limbs stiffen at the sight of the greasy, slimy goop of a monster that stood in front of his dream self. It was shaped as some sort of wolf, but Shouto knew it could take on any forms. His father had always reminded him of a wolf - having to be the alpha, a loner, bright in a dark night. Yet, it wasn’t a warm light, yet a light that Shouto wanted to run away from as soon as possible.
So that’s what he did. He gave one look at the nightmare, turned around, and bolted.
Of course, this was a dream, so he had no clue where he was going, or if he was going to end up anywhere. It looked like he was running on a treadmill that projected his life; there was his mother rocking him to bed, playing with his siblings, his father starting to train him at age five, his mother being abused, and the hot water being poured onto his face. Shouto felt his scar stinging, almost as if he was being dowsed in it again. He let out a cry, stumbling into blackness.
He blinked, but still was surrounded by shroud of dark. Shouto looked around wildly, trying to find a light, or just some way out. Nightmares, fortunately, can’t kill you, but he’s heard cases of people killing themselves in their sleep, or they had a heart attack because of the fear that pierced through their heart.
Shouto refused to be in that demographic - he certainly wasn’t going to die like that. He was going to die peacefully, in his bed in his nineties or eighties, with a warm partner holding his hand and their kids all rejoicing his life, on how he made it despite his upbringing, and how proud they were of him.
A warmth bloomed in his chest, and suddenly there was a light near his heart. Shouto blinked, and cupped it in his hand. It switched between a soft white light and a pastel red, almost pink, and he racked his brain for anything he learned in class that could give him the least bit idea of what this was. Looking around, he recognized his childhood bedroom, the colors muted by the nightmare’s darkness. He was in the middle of it, his blue and red bed near the upper left corner of the room, the farthest away from the door. Shouto remembered his mother telling him it was so that his father had a farther distance to walk, in case something bad happened.
Kids shouldn’t have to think that about their fathers.
He went and sat on the bed, sighing and still holding the light in his hands. He was thinking of happy thoughts - his future, and what he wanted to achieve in life. Shouto blinked as he began to realize that this was -
“Hope,” a new voice said, and Shouto stood up, immediately on guard. The light floated from his hands back onto his heart, staying there. He was slightly glad he didn’t have to consistently hold it, but he was more concerned with the stranger on his bed.
He looked about Shouto’s age, with forest green curly hair and expressive green eyes. Freckles shot across his face like paint splatters, and that framed the most genuine smile Shouto has ever seen on a person’s face. He felt something warm in his chest again, and the light on his chest twinkled.
“Uh, who are you?” Shouto asked eloquently, still on guard. His father never taught him how to talk to people, so he was quite an unsociable boy growing up. He could count how many friends he had on one finger. The other boy smiled, cross legged on Shouto’s childhood bed.
“I have a lot of names,” He said, “but most call me Deku. Also, just kidding, I have two names. It’s that one and another one, but due to my privacy, I’d rather not say. Deku’s fine.”
Shouto blinked. That boy talked like he was standing on hot rocks - fast and in need of attention. He nodded, deciding that Deku was a sufficient enough name.
“Doesn’t that mean ‘useless’, though?” He asked, crossing his arms, Deku shrugged, nodding.
“Yeah, but I think it has more of a ‘you can do it’ vibe, you know? So it’s Deku,” he explained, and Shouto hummed, deciding to drop it; he was satisfied with that answer.
“Anyways, what did you mean by hope?” He asked Deku, and Deku’s eyes lit up even more (if they did that one more time, Shouto was gonna need sunglasses).
“Well, hope for the future. Nightmares feed off of negative energy, and hope is positive energy. Thus, the light that’s sitting near your heart.” It twinkled again and Deku giggled. “The lights match your hair.”
Shouto blushed as he realized, yes, it did, and coughed. “Why didn’t we learn about it in class?” Deku frowned, looking disappointed.
“Mainly because a lot of people are losing hope. It’s why nightmares are so common these days,” he explained, getting off the bed. “There’s always the fear of something: rejection, failure, abandonment, pain, death. It’s increased so much, and that means more nightmares, especially stress induced ones.” He shook his head at Shouto. “Yours though, is much more deep rooted than stress. It’s trauma, and pretty deep rooted for it, too.”
Shouto blinked. “How do you know that? Do you know my life story too?” Deku blushed, waving his hands around. He realized he just had on a sweatshirt with a vest over it and jeans with loud red sneakers - he looked like just a normal kid. How much did he know?
“Nothing too personal, I promise. Just enough to where I can find the source of your trauma and talk with you,” Deku reassured him. “It’s kind of my job. I eliminate people’s nightmares and help bring back hope in their lives.”
“Really?” Shouto was dumbfounded. They definitely didn’t learn about something like that in class. This was unheard of. Nightmares are treatable, but not curable. How was this lanky kid able to defeat nightmares?
“It’s kind of a secret job, so stop thinking so hard,” Deku teased, making Shouto blush again. He needed to stop doing that. “No one really knows about what I do. I don’t exactly scream it to the clouds, nor did the people before me. It’s an inherited thing. Each person passes the ability down,” He explained. Deku seemed to be doing a lot of that. “So I’m the newest one as of now.”
“Are you human?” Shouto bluntly asked. “Like, you live in the human world, do human stuff?” Deku laughed, and nodded.
“Yeah. I actually live in the same area as you. I don’t get out much though - I’m a freelance writer in my day job.” Freelance writer actually suited the boy, and Shouto hummed.
“Okay, so you’re here to eliminate my nightmare. How do you do that?” Deku thought for a moment, then moved his hand back and forth, making an ‘ehhhh’ sound.
“Kind of. I’m moreso here to help you defeat it,” he exclaimed, pulling out a metal sword. It was long and sharp, and Shouto felt a little intimidated by it.
“This is my sword, One for All. It can transfer the Hope, the light on your chest, into the blade and create enough power to cut through the skin of the Nightmare,” he said, showing it to Shouto. He blinked.
“Why ‘One for All?’” Deku blushed a little, rubbing the back of his head.
“It’s one blade for all people. So, you know, One for All,” he said, moving his hands as he talked. Shouto paused for a moment, then hummed. He couldn’t argue with this logic.
“Okay, so what do I do?”
“Basically,” Deku began, “you think of positive feelings. For example, what were you thinking of when the light on your chest appeared?”
“The future I wanted,” Shouto replied. “Dying peacefully in my sleep, surrounded by the person I love and the family I created. That’s when this appeared.” He motioned to the light. Deku nodded, smiling.
“Yeah, that’s a good one. A lot of people think of a happy memory or something that makes them happy. A bright future or a goal you believe in is a great conductor for Hope.” He looked around the childhood bedroom, and shook his head. “This place isn’t a good place to fight a nightmare. You need to be surrounded by as much positive energy as possible. Can you think of the place where you felt the most safe?”
Shouto closed his eyes and thought. Slowly, he thought of the smell of mint tea, the dark red of roses, and the warm sun on the back of his neck. Light blossomed over his eyelids and he opened them, hissing at the harsh light. Looking around, he felt the same warmth in his chest as the memory came to him.
“This was my grandma’s garden,” Shouto explained to Deku’s curious glance. “My mom and I, we used to come here a lot when I was younger and when my dad was away. My grandma would make us tea and tell us stories that her garden was a secret passage to a fantasy world,” he laughed, smile soft. “I almost forgot about it. But yeah, I definitely feel safe here,” he said, blushing a little. Deku was smiling though, full of encouragement.
“That’s beautiful. Well, in the human world, its 3 am, and that’s when Nightmares usually strike.” Deku handed the sword to Shouto, the blade suddenly gleaming. “I have faith in you. All you have to do is channel all your positive energy into the sword, and just strike at the Nightmare. You’re strong, I’m sure you can do this.” Shouto took a breath, the sword light in his hand. He wasn’t a bad fighter, per say, but a sword is a lot different than fists. Yet, he thought of his mother smile, Fuyumi’s baked goods, his brothers’ encouraging ruffles of his hair, and how Deku’s smile made him warm inside.
The sword shone golden, and Deku beamed. “Atta boy.”
Suddenly, it started storming. The trees and flowers danced in the breeze, and Shouto felt goosebumps trail up his arms. Deku steadied himself, staring at the entrance to the garden, black steel gates. “It’s here.”
Suddenly, Shouto froze as he heard a new voice.
“Shouto, what the hell are you doing?” His father strode into the garden, his eyes ablaze with fury. Shouto backed away a little, the light in the sword fading.
“Shouto, don’t give up now!” How did Deku know his name? Not that it mattered. His father was here, and he was going to ruin everything. He let the sword fall to his side, staring blankly at his father.
“You disgrace of a son, why are you playing a girl’s fantasyland? You need to be out in the field, fighting!” He was spitting now, getting closer to Shouto. He couldn’t move - it was like his feet were frozen. His eyes grew sadder and sadder.
“Shouto, he’s not your real father!” Deku’s cries sounded faint in his eyes. No matter where he was, his father was always with him. He was his son, after all. His father’s personality, his anger, his pride - it was all going to be with him. The thoughts he had slowly diminished. They weren’t his - they were artificial, someone else planting thoughts and fantasies that he was going to have a happy ending.
“They’re yours!” Shouto blinked out his reverie as he looked at Deku, who had a determined gleam in his eyes.
“That isn’t someone else’s hope! It’s yours, and no one else’s!” He all but screamed, his fists clenching. Shouto froze for a moment once more as he recalled mint tea, warm smiles, pastries, and the feeling of hair moving.
He thought of a voice yelling into the void, just for him.
The sword burst into light, covering the garden. Shouto stared up at his father, making eye contact. Now that he was back in his headspace, he could see - that wasn’t his father. It was fake, loud anger, only meant to scare. He grinned widely, holding up the sword, feeling taller than ever.
“I’ve wanted to do this since I was five. This is for you, mom,” he said, and sliced down.
-
Shouto shot up out of his bed, panting heavily. He looked at his hands, shaking, and blinked as he saw no sword there, and he wasn’t in the garden anymore. He looked around his room in his apartment, feeling the slight disappointment pang in his heart.
He didn’t even get to thank Deku.
Shouto got up, getting dressed for the day. He had to get some groceries, or take out was going to be on the menu for the next two weeks, and Shouto isn’t rich enough for that. Taking his time walking to the local market, he hummed quietly, looking at various fruits. He somehow felt whole after the experience, like he had finally solved a lifelong puzzle. He still felt sadness at the boy he had met in his dream; surely Deku wasn’t a dream. He didn’t look like anyone he knew. Shouto knew that he knew no one that selfless as to sacrifice his time and sanity to deal with other people’s problems.
He was so out of it that he bumped into someone, falling onto the ground. He blinked as he was suddenly facing tile, and heard someone babbling.
“I’m so sorry sir, I wasn’t watching where I was going, I’m kind of a klutz like that, I really should be more careful-” A hand was offered. Shouto took it, standing up.
His eyes widened as he stared right into Deku’s green irses.
“Oh.”
