Had a dream about a magic school AU. Like... Literally my school but with magic and with Roxy as a protag because Blorbo. She was the only one in the school without magic so every magic lesson, she'd literally just take a nap on the desk. What else is she gonna do?
But also I dreamed how she was compensating for not having magic. She was mixing chemicals into explosives to win fights and like... Yeah it's kinda hard to argue against the dog with Potion of Kaboom™️
However, because it was a dream, my brain combined the Glams with the cast of Ni No Kuni 2 and got very confused when I woke up because the Kuni 2 cast actually fit a magic environment but FNaF guys do not lmao
There was also a bit where Roxy not having magic means naturally, she doesn't rely on it to solve problems. So while everyone was given the task of making a candle go out without blowing on it, she just. Stared in absolute bafflement as everyone around her immediately dove to figuring out spells that extinguish flames. Instead of just. Water. From the tap. Right next to them.
She decided to freak them out a bit for fun and when the teacher asks for volunteers to come forward to show what they've come up with, she immediately puts her paw up and gets called on. She wets her paw under the tap before anyone has their attention on her, walks up to the candle at the front desk, turns so everyone can see, says all professional "Today, I've learned..." pauses and then... just pinches the flame out. Literally just pinches the wick between the paw pads on her fingers and it goes out immediately. "That you guys are idiots." And walks back to her seat in silence with a smirk.
Naturally, a bunch of kids are yelling that she can't just do that what the fuck?! But she did just do that. It took her half a second to do what's taken all of them a good forty minutes to figure out at least. Teacher asks how she knew that would work and she just "you can't have a flame without oxygen. Obviously." and you get a chorus of "WHAT" and "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?!" She's so damn smug about it lmao these people make showing off too easy sometimes.
Like sure, she physically can't pass a mandatory magic exam unless she's able to figure out ways around it, but she can at least fuck around in lessons lmao. She tried skipping them but they started getting on her family with all the typical mandatory attendance shit so she has to go now :/ she just sleeps in them or fucks with people for fun since everyone likes to flaunt their magic on her every day anyway. Eat shit assholes she knows how to put fire out with minimal effort!
I think there was also a bit about her trying to convince teachers that a non-magic sports club would be a good idea?? And failing miserably because they just don't see the value in a magic school with non-magic sports. Thinking now, she could probably make her own club after school but probably wouldn't get that much traction with it... Resenting her family and teachers and every power that be forever because she could be a top student and could be doing amazing in school if she was just in a non-magic focused one. But she's stuck here and it sucks.
I don't know where I'd go with the story but eh it's neat I like it! Definitely different to my normal stuff!

By now, y’all might be familiar with that poll I posted awhile ago about different actor’s interpretations of a certain line in the Les Mis musical. Well, now I’m gonna talk about it. Hooray!
”Forgive me, sir. I would not dare” is such a fascinating line to me partially because of how it takes the place of an entire series of monologues from a chapter in the novel. For time’s sake, the musical condenses the runaway cart incident, Javert voicing his suspicions about the mayor, and the result of his suspicions into one scene which puts it in a different context. Instead of reporting Madeleine and then gaining information about Valjean’s lookalike as he does in the novel, Javert instead finds himself suspicious of Madeleine despite already knowing that “Jean Valjean” has been recaptured. Surprisingly, this doesn’t significantly change Javert’s motivation for taking such an apologetic tone. In both cases, he chided himself not for being suspicious of the mayor, but for being so in a way that trusted his own feelings more than that of the law. “Forgive me, sir. I would not dare” is not only a fumbled apology, but a testament to how rare it is for him to disregard his superiors. It’s a moment to understand his philosophy pre-Stars. Not only that, but it provides different information than Stars. It shows how the strictness of Javert’s moral code doesn’t only make him seem authoritative, but can also degrade him.
But an apology is not inherently degrading. So why is it in this case? This is where actor interpretation becomes important. The effect comes from the tone, not the words.
I’ve noticed a few different ways actors tend to portray this line. The first involves more of the pleading present in the novel. This interpretation comes across as somewhat panicked, trying to convey a plea for forgiveness and being appalled by his own actions simultaneously. This is beneficial in the way that it can clearly draw the audience’s attention to the difference between this line and the more composed lines surrounding it. Additionally, this particular version of the line tends to split into two subcategories. One is more reserved, contrasted with the previous, more confident lines and effectively communicates abashment. The other is more distressed and makes the apology seems urgent. Both subcategories serve the same purpose though.
The second interpretation is much more even-toned than the first. With this one, Javert maintains his composure and the apology rarely comes across as anything other than the result of a momentary lapse in judgment. This version of Javert tends to prioritize professionalism over any kind of charisma. My opinion of this interpretation varies depending on the actor.
The third interpretation is probably my least favorite. It has little to no sincerity and makes it clear that Javert is still quite suspicious of the mayor, but simply doesn’t want to alarm him. The apology has absolutely none of its original meaning. This interpretation irks me because it takes away an aspect of this character I find very interesting (the fact that Javert is a bootlicker in the most genuine way possible).
Anyway, I’m not sure how to end this. I’m might‘ve not really had a point here, but that’s okay. I just really like this line.

Since I want 2024 to be a year filled with nothing but writing progress for me, I've decided to work less on short fics so that I can focus more on my ao3 uploads and my multi-chapter Caleb x Clara (My Wittewife) story that I've been secretly working on.

S02E08 Spoilers
Anyway I hated it lol
And this isn't just a "my little guy died" kind of thing. I've thought he was going to die all season; that was not a surprise to me. This is about how tacked on the ending felt.
Izzy spends his dying breaths comforting Ed and telling Ed the crew is his family and loves him. And then Ed immediately leaves the crew to be an innkeeper. Yeah, that was a great and meaningful use of screen time.
If the crew loved Ed and considered him family, I'd really like if they would have showed that instead of just telling us. Because what I saw this season was post-Kraken Ed having one conversation with Fang and that was pretty much it for positive crew interaction. But apparently they love him and they're family, okay.
Also RE: showing and not telling, Ed referring to Izzy as his family. I think I could count the positive interactions between Ed and Izzy across all seasons on Izzy's hoof. They've hardly spoken this season post-Kraken. Where is this coming from? It felt so forced and unearned.
It's frustrating how the scene seems to brush off all of Izzy's development this season, moving away from his toxic relationship with Ed and opening up after surviving a suicide attempt, to spend his last minutes focusing on Ed and saying that he wanted to die.
Anyway forget that, it's wedding time! And now forget that, let's have Ed and Stede run an inn with no prior onscreen discussion! The end!
I got into this fandom because I loved Ed/Stede so much. The potential for cracks in their relationship was there from the start; one of their first conversations together was Ed wanting out of piracy while Stede wanted in. I was really interested to see how this would be resolved, and how they'd move forward together. I don't think the resolution on this front was satisfyingly handled at all. But Ed read a letter and they kissed, so hooray I guess. Why would you ever need to talk anything through and build a solid foundation before living together? It's not like we saw this analog literally go up in flames a few episodes ago.
There was such an odd juxtaposition of spoon-feeding the audience with flashbacks to explain what was going on for obvious things, and then also expecting the audience to do all the legwork for important relationships. What's the relationship between Jim and Oluwande? What made Stede finally decide to leave piracy behind for Ed in S2E8 vs S2E7? Why, according to an interview, is Frenchie apparently captain now instead of Zheng Yi Sao or Oluwande? We're not going to write those conversations, figure it out yourself.
Also, Blackbeard the genius, and Zheng Yi Sao who conquered China's seas, apparently can't come up with a plan better than "Wear uniforms and then walk around with a hostage, whose gun we will not be taking." It just felt so meaningless.
The thing that really gets to me the most is how much I loved S2E1-7. I had some lingering issues, but they didn't bother me because I had faith they'd be resolved (at least, resolved to some extent, given a 3 season arc). And then the last 15 minutes of this episode destroyed that notion. I thought the writing was poor and inconsistent, and it threw everything before it into a completely different light. The things that I was waiting to be built upon were never actually in the blueprints. The cracks in the foundation were covered up with bubblegum. It didn't have good bones.

Okay, language-posting time: I love talking about my first language, Finnish, cause English is so ubiquitous and while English is fascinating in its own way you can read thinkpieces on Normans anywhere.
I ran a poll to decide which topic I would post about and the fact that the Finnish word "ei" (commonly translated into English as simply the word "no") is actually a verb had overwhelming support. This is actually a feature of most Uralic languages but there are differences: for an example, Estonian, one of the closest Uralic languages to Finnish (both Baltic Finnic languages) has lost the inflectional nature of the negative verb in most cases and as a result the Estonian word "ei" is more similar to a negative particle like the English "not." Anyway, further stuff after the cut:
Anyway, to even say that the Finnish negative verb is "ei" is getting a bit ahead of things, but suffice to say that it's the most unmarked form and the one that most Finnish speakers use when answering a simple yes or no question (in most cases). To get back to basics: Finnish has a negative auxiliary, the root of which is 'e-' and which inflects in person and number. It thus behaves like a verb in two ways. Even though it's commonly realized as "ei" (it'll be the word you often hear in response to a yes/no question) it's important to note that the root of the verb is simply 'e-' because that is the part that is conjugated.
So to negate a sentence in Finnish you basically just add the negative verb before the main verb. The negative verb is already doing all the conjugating for person and number, so the main verb does not need to do any of that. For an example, using the verb "puhua," to speak (the root is 'puhu-'. I picked this one specifically because it is regular, simple and doesn't have consonant gradation, another cool feature of Finnish which I've talked about before and I'd like to talk again some day) here's how the present indicative of the verb looks like when conjugated in person and number (note: I'm gonna throw in the respective personal pronouns in there as well):
1st person singular: minä puhun
2nd person singular: sinä puhut
3rd person singular: hän puhuu
1st person plural: me puhumme
2nd person plural: te puhutte
3rd person plural: he puhuvat
And this is what things look like with negation:
1st person singular: minä en puhu
2nd person singular: sinä et puhu
3rd person singular: hän ei puhu
1st person plural: me emme puhu
2nd person plural: te ette puhu
3rd person plural: he eivät puhu
If you look closely, you can see that the stem of the main verb in affirmative and the negative verb are conjugated in almost exactly the same way: in first person plural the stem 'puhu-' becomes "puhumme," and similarly the negative verb stem 'e-' becomes "emme." In the negative, because the negative verb is already being conjugated in person and number, the main verb takes the unconjugated stem form.
Alright, but here's another thing: the negative verb doesn't take tense markers because it can only be conjugated for person and number. In fact, because Finnish is such an inflectional language there's a lot of things that Finnish verbs can be conjugated for besides person and number that in English would be handled via auxiliaries or particles. So what the fuck?
In those cases the negative verb will still be conjugated in person and number, but the main verb will do the rest. The inflected form of the verb will of course look the same regardless of person and number of course, because the negative verb will have done that.
So for an example, still staying in the indicative mood, but imperfect (past) tense:
1st person singular: minä puhuin/en puhunut
2nd person singular: sinä puhuit/et puhunut
3rd person singular: hän puhui/ei puhunut
And so on. You actually have all the building blocks for conjugating that verb in the rest of the persons, hooray!
But let's move on to a different mood altogether, the conditional mood (corresponding to English "would" statements, like "I would speak," "I would not speak" and so on), but still present tense:
1st person singular: minä puhuisin/en puhuisi
2nd person singular: sinä puhuisit/et puhuisi
That is already a lot, so let me address something I mentioned before: why is it so common to hear the word ei (third person singular of the negative verb) as a response to a yes/no question?
It's simply because the most common type of yes/no question is something concerning a thing outside of the speaker and the addressee, so something that is grammatically speaking a third person, and usually a singular.
For an example, the question: "Onko tuo sinun tietokoneesi?" (Is that your computer?) The full answer echoing the verb and everything would be "Se ei ole minun tietokoneeni." (It is not my computer.) But due to the economy of words most people will simply negate, because oftentimes it's not necessary to echo everything in the question.
"Onko tuo sinun tietokoneesi?" "Ei."
Now of course if you were being asked a personal question you would obviously inflect your answer in first person. "Oletko sinä iloinen?" (Are you happy?) "En."
Anyway, the Finnish word for no, not behaves like an auxiliary verb and that's extremely cool. But this post is far from over, because I've yet to even talk about the imperative and archaic optative moods.
