AU with an AU!!
This one is in its baby shoes but it kinda goes like this:
@toriblayde ‘s Aiden finds himself at a train station and meets the ghost of a long deceased Emmet who continues way warding in his old long abandoned work place. Seeing this anxious man, Emmet decides to bind himself to Aiden. Emotions decide how strong Emmet is. Negative emotions fuel his power and positive ones make him disappear almost completely. In any other situation this would mean that Emmet feeds off of Aiden but since it’a Emmet we’re talking about, it’s the exact opposite.
Whenever Aiden is down, feels alone or anxious, or he’s scared and in danger, Emmet can step in. When Aiden feels down, he feels a hand on his shoulder and a friend,y presence, when he’s lost Emmet can steer him into the right direction, and in this case, as bullies surround him, Emmet shows a display of light and echos in manic laughter, scaring and chasing off the offenders.

Word count: 4.4k
Warnings: brief mentions of war and canon typical violence, strong language
A/N: Oh my GOD. Didn't think I'd ever finish this but here we are, I guess. I have finished and here's 4.4k words of everything and nothing at the same time: a little bit of lore and my thoughts on how this world works after the ODIN attack, a little bit of mutual pining and a little bit of giggles and well deserved and so needed rest.
Tumblr media
Driving along an uneven winding path, an old army truck with already poor shock absorption jumped on one of the potholes, violently shaking its passengers inside.
"Oops," Keegan muttered softly and threw the cigarette butt out of the window, immediately hiding a barely noticeable grin under his mask. His passenger, who has already started to doze off, squeaked softly, hitting her forehead hard against the glass.
"Sorry, sleeping beauty, didn't mean to. The road is fucking horrible," the man smiled conciliatingly when Nameless stared at him with her brown eyes, still sleepy and full of silent indignation.
After a few moments of a staring contest, the girl rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest, turning to the window to watch the trees and mountain landscapes rushing past them. A bit later Nameless started feeling like she's drifting off into sleep again, unable to continue to keep her attention on the lulling change of the dense greenery.
"You can sleep," Keegan said again after giving a brief look to his drowsy passenger, "we’ll load everything and then head back home." The man adjusted the rearview mirror, glancing back at the car driving behind them. His gaze immediately shifted to the dashboard. The fuel was low, and the bare sight of the flicking sign on the panel annoyed the hell out of him. Damn it... Now they have to make an extra stop to refill the tank.
Nameless stifled a yawn and wrapped herself more tightly in a jacket. It was painfully obvious that it was not at all designed for someone of her height and size. But it was comfortable and warm, and it was all that mattered. Keegan chuckled at her stubborn attempts to stay awake. They were still to no avail because after a couple of minutes, the girl was quietly snuffling, crossing her arms over her chest and tucking her knees to herself.
She woke up about an hour later, when the morning dim sun turned to noon. Keegan slowed down the truck and parked near an improvised checkpoint built of stingers and sandbags. A thin old man with a shotgun over his shoulder was standing there, visibly unbothered. Keegan rolled the window down, talking about something with the armed man, but Nameless simply wasn’t awake enough to catch up with their conversation.
"Woke up already?" Keegan smirked, pulling the mask back over the lower part of his face while watching as the attendant went to move the spike strip out of the way. Nameless nodded and yawned again, covering her mouth with a small, calloused palm. As soon as the stingers were removed, the cars moved ahead. Keegan nodded briefly to the old man and Nameless noticed a flare in his belt.
Stalkers didn't get many days off. And, honestly, most of the time, it was pretty hard to call it a weekend at all. Rather, a quick attempt to get a breath of fresh air before plunging back into hell. This time, the break between completed and future tasks was fourty-eight hours. Including the time spent on the way back "home", of course.
Nameless stole a glance at Keegan, squinting and trying to see the signs of fatigue on his, peculiarly beautiful, but quite emaciated face. Nothing. Only the remnants of the paint in the wrinkles under his big, always melancholic-looking eyes. The dark traces of color only made the soldier's wrinkles visually even deeper and him even more tired-looking. Ain't no way he doesn't wanna sleep at all... Not even a bit? Nameless turned her head a little more clearly at the man, no longer so covertly glaring at his face. Pfft... Of course... He snored like a damn tractor tonight... The girl didn't have time to finish her inner monologue, as Keegan turned to her, slightly raising his thick, dark eyebrow in a silent question. The familiar friendly smile played in his bright blue eyes.
"I got something on my face?" He murmured in a low, gravely voice and turned back to the road. Giving the girl time to hide her embarrassment behind the slight pout, he still kept stealing glances at her, enjoying her awkward shifts on the seat. Nameless took a lungful of air and exhaled. The sand and the dust, raising from the hot California roadway, immediately tickled the inside of her nose and made the girl frown and scratch it, suppressing the annoying urge to sneeze. Unsuccessfully. Keegan chuckled, carefully turning the truck to the left.
"Bless you."
The usual, neat houses of the American suburb were slowly passing by as they drove into the settlement. Noticing army vehicles passing along the road, some people looked out the windows, and some went outside, leading by curiosity or even an urge to greet the soldiers properly. Nameless slightly shrank, sliding lower in the seat. The girl couldn't say what kind of town it was, she couldn't even say exactly in which settlement their so-called field base was now located. But it was the nearest settlement to them, still inhabited, yet, in relative proximity to the front line on the south. Of course, many left the place that was now not completely safe—the doors of their houses were tightly locked and the windows were curtained; but many stayed, saying that the northern states were not made of rubber either.
"There we are..." Keegan said under his breath, more to himself than to Nameless, and carefully slowed down near one of the houses, killing the roaring engine. The second truck also stopped behind them and two men immediately got out, stretching their backs and arms.
Keegan put the car in park and removed the ghost skull insignia from his shoulder, stuffing it into the glove box. All this time Nameless' eyes didn't leave the man, following all his movements. When he got out, she quickly grabbed her old, battered backpack from the backseat and jumped out of the car after him. The man adjusted himself and stretched his body with a low groan and Nameless had to suppress the urge to be annoying and grab his side and give him a few ticklish squeezes. Mostly because she knew very well that the petty bastard wouldn't let her get away with it, of course. Like this one time when, after she sprinkled him with the remnants of water in the cup (just a few drops, really), he intentionally put his hands under the freezing cold water and then right under her collar, grinning from ear to ear while the girl was squirming and trying to escape his firm grasp. But the urge was still there, though.
However, a man in a neatly ironed blue shirt, busily approaching the four of them, managed to distract the young woman's intrusive thoughts. Nameless had to shake her head when she found herself looking at the reflex from the sun on his balding and shiny like a bowling ball head for inappropriately long time. The man nodded to the group, fussily straightening the belt on his trousers as he went and extended his hand for a handshake. Keegan wrapped his wide and calloused hand around the man's thin palm and squeezed it lightly.
"Sir, I didn't expect you and your friend to come, too." The man said softly with a stifled laugh and awkwardly offered a nod to approaching Chris. When other ghost returned the polite gesture, old man turned his gaze to Nameless, greeting her, too. She barely noticeable nodded in response and quickly looked around the neighborhood, avoiding to look at the man's bald head once again. No, but really... How is it so glossy?..
"We haven't recruited a staff of couriers yet, so gotta do everything by ourselves." Keegan joked, following the man who leaded the group toward his garage. Nameless immediately noted that even though the man had a garage, his car, an old but tidy Toyota Camry, was parked in the driveway for some reason.
"We keep everything here... I was told that volunteers will come and take all the things, medicines, this week, probably..." The man mumbled but Nameless didn't listen further. She put her hand on Keegan's shoulder to get his attention and, when he bent slightly towards her, nodded her head toward the street corner with a small pharmacy in a neat brick building.
"Yeah, go ahead. We'll come there soon, too," he said quietly, and the girl nodded and headed down the street, leaving the men to sort things out.
"Hey, Nameless!" Chris, another soldier with kind green eyes and hair gradually thinning in the forehead area, shouted after the girl. "And take some..."
"You'll do it yourself." Keegan interrupted his friend and lightly slapped him on the back, toward the garage where the citizen man led them.
Nameless blinked at the men and shook her head, heading to the pharmacy. The girl had already been here a couple of times before. The calm, civilian life was in stark contrast to life on the base, let alone in No Man's Land with its apathetic, dangerous landscapes and destruction. Their base was at a decent distance from all the fighting, constant gunfire and most of the dangers of the war; but often it was also the first stop for the wounded, who couldn't yet be transported north. Sometimes it was as well their last. 'With great regret and heavy heart, we have to inform you that our resources are extremely limited. We ask you to be patient and pray', they say. The wording of the officials was getting more and more interesting with each passing year.
Walking along the cozy sidewalk, Nameless at first didn't notice an old ball that bumped into her leg. The sudden kick forced her to jump on the spot, and three children run out from around the corner of one of the houses. Their fervent laughter filled the quiet street, dispelling the established calmness and stirring the warm, stale air. A blond girl of about four, an equally blond boy of about twelve, ran ahead and, apparently, their friend – a dark-haired boy of about seven, was following them. Without thinking twice, Nameless slightly kicked the ball toward the children and couldn't help smiling when the girl burst into a ringing, infectious laugh when the ball hit her beautiful yellow shoes.
"Thank you, miss." The blond boy nodded to Nameless, and she nodded back, watching the children playing in front of the house for a couple more moments before she kept moving.
Turning the corner, the girl jumped up the low stairs in a few steps and entered the pharmacy. Her face immediately got bathed in the coolness of the air conditioner and the smells of medicines. The ringing of the bell above the door notified the pharmacist of a visitor. A short, curly-haired old woman with a friendly round face immediately came out of the warehouse and, pulling oval glasses on her nose, smiled at Nameless. Her warm expression immediately made the girl smile awkwardly in return as she felt the blush creeping up her thin cheeks.
"Ah, my dear, it's you... As usual?" The woman mumbled, straightening the badge on her robe. 'Vanessa Millan, pharmacist'.
The girl nodded awkwardly and slowly walked over to the cash register. She took the backpack off her shoulder, calmly watching the woman went to one of the shelves.
"Okay, here you go," Mrs. Millan put a large package of night pads in front of Nameless and began to write something in a notebook, opening the cash register along the way.
"And where are yours... Escorts?" The woman asked with humor in her voice, finally looking up at the girl and folding her hands at the table in front of her. Her blue eyes, surprisingly, did not seem cold at all. On the contrary, they radiated warmth, too, and Nameless once again caught herself smiling. The girl let out a light laugh and waved her red head towards the exit, simultaneously stuffing hygiene products into her backpack.
"They're probably still talking to Mr. Rickman? He's been really excited lately. People have donated well this time. Clothings, sleeping bags, some equipment, someone even bought extra ammunition." The woman laughed softly and waved her hand. "They got enough medicines, too. Especially hemostatics. Lieutenant Mahwadi complained a lot about the lack of hemostatics and painkillers last time... And, God, he swore how I've never heard him swearing before..." Mrs. Millan put her hand on her chest and shook her head, suppressing a deep, low chuckle, "I'll show your guys everything that needs to be picked up when they get here."
Nameless forced an awkward smile and looked around the pharmacy. She had nothing to pay with since she had no money at all to start with. Thinking about it, she could barely remember the last time she had heard the rustle of dollars in her hands. Not like she needed them at the base, though. The pharmacist was a kind woman and Nameless knew that she will pay for her pads from her own wallet. The thought made Nameless feel self-conscious and comparison herself to a parasite kept popping up in her head. The young woman's hesitation didn't come unnoticed by the older woman, who immediately waved her hands.
"No! Don't even think about it! It's completely alright, don't worry!"
The girl sighed, knowing that her desire to repay the woman for her kindness wouldn't be able to compete with her stubbornness. She was grateful for it, of course, but the urge to do something nice for her in exchange hadn't gone anywhere.
Nameless zipped her backpack and her attention was attracted by a small TV in the corner of the room. The pharmacist also turned around and, taking the remote control, turned up the volume. A beautiful blonde news anchor has finally found her voice.
'... and therefore, due to the increasing demand over supply, the White House decided to deconserve national oil reserves. We remind you that the unstable market situation in 2018 has already forced the White House to take such measures once. Then, the volume of national oil reserves decreased from 732 million barrels to 491 in just one year...'
"Gasoline prices are absolutely horrific... Almost $6 a gallon, can you imagine?" Mrs. Millan pointed her head indignantly. "My daughter lives in Minneapolis. Sometimes they raise the price up to $9 there, can you imagine!"
Nameless nodded several times like a dummy, trying to show her interest and understanding to the maximum without actually understanding and caring much. But the woman continued, more quietly and still shaking her head at every word of the anchorwoman.
"Prices are growing but salaries are not, and all this migration situation doesn't have a good effect on the labour market, too, you know?. I mean, it's understandable, people are running from the war, but the north states are also rather troubled right now. No work, refugees sometimes live right on the streets, crime level is growing..."
The woman took another deep breath and shook her head, while Nameless quite successfully suppressed the lump in her throat. Stories about refugee camps always made her skin crawl. What if Merrick's anxiety and suspicions didn't win? She might have as well ended up there; just murdered at best. So, in general, she was living pretty well right now...
"Hello there, ladies," Keegan's loud baritone rang out immediately after the bell above the door. The soft sound of closing door was immediately followed by the sounds of army boots on the tiled floor. Both women turned to the men in a heavy gear, approaching them.
"Ah, hello, boys! C'mon, follow me," mrs. Millan smiled brightly and went into the warehouse, waiting for the men to go after her.
"You okay?" Nameless twitched slightly in surprise when Keegan's quiet, guttural voice sounded right above her ear. She turned around to the man just to notice his warm blue eyes running all over her face. Confused for a second, she nodded haltingly and exhaled a breath she didn't know she was holding. Nameless took a small step back to put some distance between them and headed toward the warehouse, knowing very well that the man was silently following her.
"Everything in this box is sterile. Tourniquets, syringes, bandages–regular and hemostatic; in powders, too... Also, here are the nasogastric probes..." when her gaze fell on a sterically packed long thin hose, Nameless experienced the entire palette of unpleasant flashbacks in a few seconds and winced. She could've sworn that using these was almost as bad as getting her tongue dissected. "And in this box we got pills, injections... Well, lieutenant will figure it all out."
The pharmacist waved her hand and closed both boxes, sealing them with duct tape. Nameless reached out to take one of the boxes but Keegan immediately pushed her hands away. When he got the heavy box into his gloved hands, the man shook his head toward Mrs. Millan, who was holding a smaller package in her hands.
"Take that one." Keegan took the load more comfortably and headed for the exit with Torch.
"Here's also, you know, some more things... Absorbent napkins, non-sterile bandages... Well, it will come in handy, anyway," the old woman mumbled awkwardly, giving Nameless the package in her hands. She nodded and, taking the woman's warm hand in hers, squeezed it slightly, expressing gratitude.
If it weren't for people collecting all these things voluntarily, spending their already small money (and Nameless could only imagine how much prices for hemostatics and painkillers had jumped for the past years, given the demand for them), it would be much, much harder for them. The young woman could feel nothing but gratitude and the fact that this sweet woman was embarrassed by the fact that these things weren't "good enough" only made her want to reassure and thank her even more.
The woman smiled faintly once more and nodded, patting the girl on the shoulder, slightly pushed her towards the exit.
"Well, go ahead. Don't keep the guys waiting."
"Hey-hey!" Nameless caught up with the men already near trucks, loading the trunks with things and medicines. After throwing the package into the trunk of Keegan's truck, she slightly tilted her head and looked out from behind the car. The vision of the man, carefully tossing a blonde little girl into the air a couple of times while she was choking on her ringing laughter involuntarily put a small smile on Nameless' face.
Keegan put the girl on the lawn near the house where she had previously played with her brother and friend.
"Why are you running out onto the road?"
"Just because." The little girl giggled as the soldier squatted down to be on a level with her and lowered the mask to his chin, exposing the rough features of his face to her.
"Just because... And what if you'd been hit by a car?" The man let out a low, quiet chuckle.
"I won't."
"Molly!" A blond-haired boy jumped out of the house, shortening the distance between the house and his sister in a few steps. "How'd you get out?"
"I took a step stool to unlock the door!" Molly said almost proudly, adjusting the bright orange buttons on her white, pretty blouse.
Keegan chuckled softly once more, watching as the older brother chastised his little sister and the man was about to get to his feet when a car's door made a loud, teeth crushing creak, attracting the attention of the three of them. All eyes instantly turned to Nameless. Hand on the truck door, eyes pointlessly staring inside of the car. She quickly looked away in embarrassment and threw the backpack on her seat, digging into it enthusiastically and pretending to be busy. Damn Keegan and his wreck of a truck!
"Why is that girl never talking?" Molly suddenly asked quietly, leaning to Keegan and pointing her small finger at now even more blushing Nameless.
The man thought for a few moments, trying to keep a calm smile on his face, and finally spoke.
"Well, she's just our enchanted princess. Bad people have put a spell on her." Nameless frowned slightly, arching an eyebrow and continuing to eavesdrop. 'I don't get along well with children' my ass. She grinned inwardly, rolling her eyes. He was either acting humble, saying that, or rather just straight up bullshitting her. And talking about Keegan, humbleness was clearly not the case, that's for sure.
"A princess?.." Molly spoke slowly with unexpected for a four-year-old girl scepticism, examining Nameless. "But princesses should wear beautiful dresses!"
For a moment, Keegan was taken aback by the statement. It seemed like this little girl with clear, bright eyes could easily see through his fairytales and wasn't ready to buy them without proofs.
"She's just a modern princess! Do you think she'll be able to run around with a rifle in some stupid dress?" The girl's brother joined the conversation, deciding to play along with the confused man and literally just save him from further embarrassment.
"Exactly!" Keegan snapped his fingers, and Nameless almost physically felt waves of cringe and tenderness washing over her entire body at the same time.
"Hmm... Have you tried to disenchant her?"
"Of course. The U.S. Armed Forces has the most advanced technology, but even we can't break this curse yet."
Nameless had to turn her head slightly to the side and bite her lip to keep from crying with laughter right now. Molly, on the other hand, did not hold back, bursting into loud laughter.
"Silly! Princesses can't be disenchanted like that! Have you tried kissing her?"
The straightforwardness of the four-year-old stunned everyone within a radius of twenty meters and Nameless had to dive a little deeper into her backpack, hiding her face flushed with embarrassment and attempts to suppress laughter. Keegan was obviously just as confused and coughed awkwardly into his fist before continuing.
"I don't think I'm her Prince Charming," he said softly and grinned, recovering a little.
"So what? Shrek was not a prince too, but he disenchanted Princess Fiona!"
Nameless gasped aloud, eyes wide open and covering her mouth with her palm. This little girl was just roasting him, a proud Marine! She wanted to see Keegan's confused face more than anything right now, but she was afraid that if she turned around, she would laugh out loud.
"He's not very handsome either, but he's loving!"
"That's enough." The boy suddenly grabbed the girl by the hand and dragged her into the house. "I'm sorry, sir..."
"Bye bye!" Molly waved charmingly at Keegan before disappearing a few moments later behind the door of the house.
"Wow... Never in my life have I been compared to Shrek before..." Keegan chuckled quietly and got to his feet, dusting himself off.
He pulled the mask back on his nose and walked over to Nameless, who was gasping from trying to suppress her laughter. The young woman finally looked up at Keegan with red eyes, still covering her mouth with her hand. Seeing that she was obviously having fun with what had happened, the man smiled awkwardly and adjusted the mask that already fit perfectly on his face. The moment he noticed the amusement on her face, Keegan knew for damn sure–the little tease won't let him live it down. But here's the worst part–he didn't even mind it, not one bit. He watched the girl's laughter for a couple of more minutes, feeling something growing inside of him every time he noticed small wrinkles under her eyes whenever she smiled, or how the long lashes were hiding her warm brown eyes whenever she was avoiding looking at him. The man took a deep breath to fill the sudden tightness in his chest. After laughing for a few more seconds, Nameless finally took her hand away from her face and, placing it on the man's forearm, gave him a reassuring, soft, but still full of mischievous fun look.
"Yes, yes, I know you don't think I'm ugly." The man chuckled softly and rolled his eyes slightly when the girl took her hand off his shoulder and made a new grimace, wrinkling her nose, but still smiling.
"Yes, you're right. Prince Charming was an asshole in this story. And I'm definitely not an asshole, yeah?" Keegan continued with a soft grin and flicked the smiling girl on the nose before heading to the driver's seat. "Hop in. We'll refuel now and head back home."
Scratching her nose and smiling, Nameless, threw her backpack on the backseat and quickly jumped into the passenger seat. As she did so, a small paper parcel immediately fell onto her lap. She stared blankly at Keegan, who was just starting the engine and driving back into the roadway, not even looking at the girl.
"Yes, that's for you. Open it already." He muttered softly, diving into his breast pocket for a lighter.
The girl arched an eyebrow in disbelief and carefully unpacked the parchment, gasping in surprise. With much more eagerness, she unwrapped the warm, baggy knitted cardigan lying in the bundle. The coloring was absolutely impossible granny-like, with ugly graphic patterns. Feeling the yarn, she turned to the man, who was looking at her furtively. Nameless put the gift on her lap, unable to hide the gratitude on her face. Noticing this, Keegan grinned contentedly and shifted on the driver's seat, sitting a little more forwardly. Thank god the mask was enough to hide his awkwardly flushed cheeks.
"You like it?"
The girl nodded eagerly, looking at the bizarre drawings on the cardigan and feeling the pleasant, soft yarn.
"It'll keep you warm at nights when I'm not around," the man teased and immediately let out a hoarse laugh when the girl rolled her eyes and gently pushed him in the shoulder. However, this did not spoil his playful mood at all.
Lifting the cardigan to fold it carefully again, the girl saw a red-black CD box at the bottom of the package.
"Swedes," Keegan suddenly said, turning towards the gas station. "You like ABBA, so I thought you might as well like a Swedish glam ABBA..." the man muttered, fully concentrating on parking, and suddenly shot Nameless a cheeky grin.
"Especially 'cause you obviously have a thing for men in scary masks."
Nameless rolled her eyes again and pushed his shoulder, this time harder, while the man was hoarsely laughing at his own witty comment.
Impossible bastard!

Since the last game I played is Shield, it'd be cool if Sunny moved from Galar to Paldea. Since Nemona herself did say that we were "that girl that moved to the house down the road".
I also just recently remembered about this Applin thing and I had to draw it.
(This system is perfect for getting things done, I accomplish a task, I draw as a reward yass.)

Nurse Miriam is cool too btw
