I feel like when I’m reading or watching something, for me to like a hero, they have to
1) have ambition about anything
2) not be annoying
3) not excuse their shitty behaviour with their shitty childhood
4) not be so self-righteous they don’t see their own flaws
For these reasons I hate with a burning passion Jace Herondale, Clary Fairchild, Eli Ever, Tiberius “Cal” Calore VIII, Dean Winchester, and Legend/Dante Santos
Jace is constantly doing something shitty in every book and people don’t care and they just put up with it for some reason. In CoG he belittles Clary because he wants to push her away but keeps coming back to her. He also keeps coming onto Clary when he thought she was his sister and said that cursed sentence in CoG that I need to bleach from my brain. I know if he said that shit to me I would’ve punched him in his stupid face cuz who does he think he is? He mocks the werewolves after they lost a child in their pack, he’s just awful to Alec at times, he doesn’t seem to understand there are consequences to his actions and just does shit because he wants to. He had the emotional maturity of a dried up pinecone.
Clary also does so much shit and people don’t call her out because she’s the protagonist and she just lets Jace do whatever to her because he’s hot. Girl please get a grip. She slut shames Izzy because apparently women aren’t allowed to have a sex life or wear revealing clothing 😒 girl you kissed someone you thought was YOUR BROTHER!! She dated Simon to get over Jace and then kissed Jace in the Seelie Court, and repeatedly thought about Jace in a romantic sense WHILE she thought they were SIBLINGS! I can’t.
Eli is so self-righteous, annoying and hypocritical. He uses God and religion as an excuse to kill innocent people which is just disgusting. Like I get that he thinks being an EO changed a person because Victor became different but he is an EO himself and he just takes it on himself to murder innocent people for simply existing.
Cal has no desire to do anything, at least up to the beginning of King’s Cage he doesn’t (where I currently am). He knows how poorly the Reds are being treated and he doesn’t want to change anything because (and I’m paraphrasing) there would be outrage among the Silvers and a war would break out. Bitch you are already at war! He’s the reason why so many innocent young Reds have lost their lives fighting in a war they have no say in. He sees the Scarlet Guard killing Silvers and he doesn’t try to stop them. He sulks and whines but doesn’t take any real action, which he could if he actually wanted to. He stalks around the camp like Mare’s dog and thinks he’s better than everyone.
Dean Winchester is an abusive asshole. He locked Sam in the cellar when he was addicted to demon blood when he knew the withdrawal could kill him. He shit on Sam for being manipulated. He’s made horrible perverted jokes about women, might I remind y’all of the high school episode (he was at least 26 at the time). He guilted Sam for leaving him in Hell and Purgatory when he did THE EXACT SAME THING when Same went to the cage. He threatened Kaia, a teenager at gun point for his own selfish purposes. He abused Jack til the very end, yelling that he wasn’t family when Jack had sacrificed his soul and life for the Winchesters, and made Jack hate himself for being born. He was shitty to Cas in so many seasons and didn’t care that Cas just went through seeing his son die and wasn’t able to save him. He violated Sam’s body by tricking him into letting Gadreel in which led to the death of Kevin and had the audacity to think he was wronged.
Dante is shit. Julian, his brother, lived with him for centuries, followed him wherever he went and loved him unconditionally. All Julian asked was for Dante to love him back, which he never did. When Julian finally found someone who loved him, Dante made fun of him. And then in the next book he gives up his immortality for Tella, a girl he has known for literal months at most. He didn’t love his brother, who has been with him since the beginning, enough to give up his immortality but he loved this random girl he has known for a couple months at most to give it all up?? Tella should’ve left him in the dust just like she did Jacks and went off on adventures by herself and met someone that wasn’t a twat.

I’m just saying that if I met someone and they were showing signs of being abusive, toxic, plus calling me names AND THEN I found out they were my siblings, LMAO BYE. I know you can catch feelings for people who are not right for you and maybe I’m at a point in my life when I know what I will tolerate but I would not be trying to bang that said sibling. I wouldn’t be going around thinking “omg we have such a love story, our love conquers all”. no, that is not love. I would still have lost feelings even if we weren’t siblings. like what the actual fuck

unpopular opinion/hot take: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare!
alrighty, so: Ithuriel the angel is the real MVP of the series, not Clary. So, here's my supporting evidence:
Ithuriel went through a lot of shit w/Valentine torturing him for, what, over a decade?
He killed his mortal form (via the seraph blade Jace gave him) & went BACK to Heaven, where he told Raziel what Valentine did to him. Considering how long Ithuriel was trapped on Earth, I'm thinking Raziel didn't know what happened to his brother until Ithuriel went back. If he did, he could've sent angelic visions to some Shadowhunter to kick Valentine's ass.
All the visions/runes he sent to Clary. Remember, all the runes she "creates" are actually just runes that weren't included in the Grey Book (so uh, do angels fuck? Bc she "created" a birth control rune).
Oh yeah, and Ithuriel was the Clockwork Angel. So he was fucked over by YET ANOTHER HUMAN and he saved Tessa Gray. A lot.
+ you can use his name to activate a seraph blade 😇
In other words, Ithuriel deserves a damn statue right next to Raziel's.
& no, in case you were wondering, I do not like Clary for personal reasons. Don't hate uwu

top 10 atrocious shtv plotline
let me preface by saying i do not hate shadowhunters. it camp demon fighting hot people in leather with not enough lighting and candles as regular guest stars. this list is my personal opinion, a little something something rage filled silly little rants of my favorite show and its clown moment. picture this as the inner monologue of the lead in an indie romcom who speaks in metaphors and has a letterbox account. so sit back, grab your set and stele because you will need so much iratze for your sanity.
content warning: this rant will touch upon topics such as mental health, addiction, attempted suicide and incest.
10. magnus lost his magic
Tumblr media
magnus is magnificent in everything, so that is why this plotline disappointed me. it has so much potential and they end up doing the bare minimum. there's no way magnus fricking bane has no one to rely on when he lost his magic besides alec. no fricking way. we should have gotten magnus to work out alec's deal with asmodeus by himself. i'm also of the opinion that magnus should be the one to figure out a way to get his magic back (there are lots of good fics exploring this, i recommend you check it out) it end up in this position cause overall it a good and interesting premise and magnus outsmarting his father and using his portal (something that magnus invented) to defeat him is a good conclusion
9. heidi took over dumort and planned to dominate the shadoworld
Tumblr media
i mean this happened in the book, but it was given way way more screen time than necessary in the show. please dont tell me a newly born vampire is suddenly a master manipulator and leader and makes every vampire bend to her will. you're trying to be serious not comedy shtv. and how about we give all of heidi screen time to flesh out clary and magnus plotline in S3B more?? or idk, give the lightwood trio A PLOTLINE this season besides being the supporting partner
8. jordan redemption arc
Tumblr media
he's an abuser. he's an abuser. HE IS AN ABUSER. we don't need him sobbing and crying and then ‘dying’ in front of maia. i loathe how for a second i thought they gonna make maia go back together with jordan again. the only good thing come out of it is maia getting somewhat closure, and i used that term loosely
7. the owl
Tumblr media
jace spent S3A being mind controlled by lilith, struggling, begging to be killed, being mind control again, then free. he doesn't have a single moment after all that bullshit to process because oh we need the plot to move along and another fresh trauma has arrived at the jace station. and oh remember the soul sword thing??? when there's an attempt to write the payoff of jace unintentionally killing a bunch of people? i dont know about you but the show writers sure do not. the rules and influence of lilith over jace is so confusing it is ridiculously hilarious
6. alec and jace's parabatai bond
Tumblr media
i've already done a recap of all the wonderful moments of jace parabatai career so i will keep this really simple. picture the parabatai bond as group final assessment. alec is pulling all-nighter, groupchat urging to finish tasks on time, one on one meetings with professor for feedback, two hours finalizing and fixing the final product. jace is "why do i have to do so much" and submitting work late two hours that don't pass the plagiarize check
5. team evil (evil clary + S3B jonathan)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i would like to remind you she turns fully evil in episode 18 and is cured of it in episode 20. they build this evil plotline up through clary burning her hand, snapping at simon once and losing it at aline (who btw i believe is justified in her rage how many people sebastian/jonathan/ginger incest bread have killed) clary turning evil means she now will sexily whisper her line, wear tighter/revealing dress and stare at people with smoldering eyes. because of course, evil female characters are like that. i also need writers for that clace scene in the club when jace's on seelie drug to answer for their crime against my sanity
jonathan S3B is bad. and not even the fun kind. when you compare this character to the one in S2B, he got clear on every possible aspect i almost shed a tear. he, like evil clary, has so much potential. but the way the writing goes makes him just hilariously pathetic. yes i am in fact referring to him yelling 'YOU WILL NEVER LOVE ME' at clary and then flying away in his devil cosplay
4. merlion getting taken to the silent brothers
Tumblr media
alec is shit for blindly following the clave's order, jace betrays his parabatai and along with izzy and clary conducts a stupid plan that can create an all-out war and involves two of the downworlder leaders in all that. also, magnus steal alec stele aka the acting head stele…because bad decision is infectious in this episode. considering how serious they’re trying to make the political aspect of the show to be, the fact that this exists. literally insane. this whole plotline is to highlight how clary is the hero who stands up for justice and morals and all of that when she the one contributing the least. she just stands around lets everyone do stuff for her and they're trying to convince us she's the hero. then she and jace fuck off to another dimension after roping people into their mess because that is what a good hero does.
that screencap. she said that surrounding by downworlders. her kendall jenner pepsi world peace era
3. alec's mental health
Tumblr media
alec try to jump off that balcony and the only person they show having any concern over it is magnus in the next episode. oh no no, not even in that lightwood family talk in the same episode of the balcony thing, with you know, his mom and his parabatai, not a word. and the only one who says anything related to it is clary of all people. im convinced the whole alec killing off jocelyn is for alec to feel guilty and then ease him into a friendship with clary because this is no way to handle this type of story there is no way. and it is not like they say oh well, here's the end of this. because they include shots of alec pinching his hands at that hospital scene. what was the reason? has alec not had enough on his plate already? friendly reminder, iris's spell at that party caused people to project their insecurities and everyone was fighting each other. and who does alec blame? who does he fight? who he thinks is worthless of living and no one will miss? himself. do they drop this storyline faster than clace romance? yes!
2. clace
Tumblr media
ah, instant love that makes no sense because we are supposed to believe it is the way it is. the writers keep telling us there is nothing compared to their love but doesn't show us SHIT when it comes to that. don't believe me? oh, okay, the number of dates that they have before crusty lord of the lifetime valentine morgenshit breaks the fake sibling news is that time when jace stands and watches clary get encanto and tough inappropriately by a vampire and their rendezvous with fake dad. then in S2A they mostly interact when clary is in trouble and needs jace help. clary dates the first person she knows already has feeling for her, jace goes around very around. they don't bond or try to talk or interact besides jace constantly looking sulkily at clary and simon. then 2x14 it all reveals she loves jace she desires jace no one for her but jace. and i totally forgot jace's confession via the soul sword about loving clary, not the way you would love a sister and all that. their first date as an again couple is 3x02…the love confession is ridiculous because he's saying all these things despite us literally never seeing that on screen. they bonk when clary still links with her psychopath brother, that whole scene alone should pay for my therapy. we kept being told they are in love, but we are never shown that. hey, maybe some advice. slapping romantic music over a scene will not make the scene romantic, you actually need to write it too. this relationship goes nowhere because itself and the two characters inside it doesn't change. it's always clary wants something so jace push everyone and everything under the solar system out of the way to give it to her. this wouldn't be a problem if, yk, it is only in the first season and they have character development. but let me remind you S3B they summon lilith back to earth despite magnus losing his magic to help defeat her (didn't make it to this list but a very strong honorary mention) with the worst possible plan. relying on a guy simon knew for less than the time clary and jace spent thinking through their plan. it like you are asking for him to betray you
aldetree izzy raphael and yinfen
Tumblr media
one of the only major plotlines izzy has. and it's this. because of course this addict seeks a provider then both fall in love and the provider becomes addict again is super duper appropriate to happen to these two. two of the poc characters who are prominent in the show. one of the few female characters. of course very splendid decisions right there. and at the end of the series izzy gets together with someone who can make her relapse again. all because this storyline that could have been cut off and replaced with something more decent. but nope! sexily blood drinking time!

I didn’t remember what kind of an energy vampire Clare was before I read this book again. Reading City of Fallen Angels and Chain of Gold consecutively really did me in. The writing is as terrible now as it was ten years ago. Chain of Gold received criticism towards the writing, how the writing seemed lazy and not at all like Clare’s writing previously, making some readers think she doesn’t really care about The Last Hours as much. But truly, this book if anything just shows that the creative bankruptcy as to Clare’s writing has existed for a long time. This book is a frustrating read, not one character was likable, and the plot just happened without anyone having to lift a finger. Well, except Lilith—she did all the lifting here.
Aside from all the idiotic relationship issues the characters face, we are presented with different mysteries:
1. Someone killing Shadowhunters that were former Circle members. They are found dead in different Downworlder territories, making Luke think this is an attempt to sow discord between the Downworld, not to egg on the Clave against the Downworlders.
2. An abandoned baby whose mother wished someone to kill said baby, making Jocelyn think something is wrong with the child and not the mother, as you do.
3. People in tracksuits attacking Simon for no seeable reason and getting blown into smithereens by the Mark of Cain. Maureen’s character is brought in as a way for Lilith to finally reach Simon.
4. Jace has bad dreams that cause him to behave like his problems are the only thing in the world and people should have a crystal ball when it comes to his torment because he refuses to explain his behavior.
The Great Reveal: Lilith is trying to revive Sebastian and bring forth another kind of race of Nephilim.  Camille is killing Shadowhunters for their blood so Lilith can give it to the babies additionally to demon blood. Because both Jace and Sebastian died, but only Jace was brought back, and in order to maintain balance, Sebastian must also be brought back because of some Old Laws. Lilith has been beckoning Jace through his dreams because Jace dying blew away protections given to the Nephilim children at birth and thus he is now susceptible to demonic influences. Lilith then finally gains control over Jace.
The whole point was 1. To revive Sebastian and 2. Make demon babies.
THE BABIES. Newscast tells about an abandoned baby—this is first mentioned offhandedly when Simon returns home before being kicked out. At the diner, this news story is repeated. Jocelyn gets a hunch and contacts Catarina about the baby because the baby was brought to the same hospital Catarina works at. Clary accompanies Jocelyn to Beth Israel hospital and witnesses the dead demon baby. Catarina gives them a piece of fabric, a clue that Clary uses to track down the owners of said fabric. Clary finds out the address of the Church of Talto, the home to worshippers of Lilith who have tried to make her more demons babies like Sebastian. Clary and Isabelle attend the Church and thus are the only ones who know about it. This lead goes nowhere because Clary is brought to the final showdown by force. The only information this brings to Isabelle is that they figure out the tracksuit gang serves Lilith and are trying to make demon babies.
What does Jocelyn do with the information after seeing the deformed devil baby at the hospital? Nothing. What does Clary do after investigating the Church of Talto and gaining the knowledge of Lilith? Returns to worrying about Jace where her story veers to bringing him to the Silent Brothers and then the eventual kidnapping. What does Isabelle do, knowing that there is a demon worshipping cult giving babies demon blood? Leave it to the Clave. The point that was the Church of Talto effectively ends here, and the characters return to do other stuff.
DEAD SHADOWHUNTERS. Some Shadowhunters are each dying in different Downworlder territories, but this is a pointless diversion because it serves no point. Camille was just killing them for Lilith because of their Shadowhunter blood (for the demon babies). Camille does not bring up any reason why she killed them in different territories, just that she was coerced and was happy to oblige because the Shadowhunters were former Circle members and had previously killed her kind. Luke, Maryse, and anyone else taking part over ruminating over this mystery are thus having pointless conversations because the final reveal does not even address it.
Dead Shadowhunters are found
Clary sees a rune that helps them interrogate the dead corpse of one
They get Camille’s name
With help of Simon, they bring Camille to the Institute as a prisoner in order to interrogate her about the deaths
Simon just happened to also know Camille by this time and needs to get back to her, a win-win situation altogether
Camille is prisoned in the Sanctuary of the New York Institute but she is unwilling to speak to no one else but Magnus in order to sow relationship troubles between him and Alec
Camille essentially gives them nothing and is later broken out by Lilith’s tracksuit gang. She only reveals her true involvement to Alec when Alec later finds her imprisoned, tied to a pipe, and this is where it ends.
THE TRACKSUIT GANG. The tracksuit gang is partly Lilith’s attempt to get Simon to come to her, because she needs his Daylighter blood in order to revive Sebastian. She also tries to lure him in disguise of a band promoter because Simon is undefeatable and cannot be attacked because of the Mark of Cain. The tracksuit gang is also the one providing Lilith with their babies so she can the try to turn them into the new and different race of Nephilim. Later after being attacked by the people in tracksuits and interrogating one of them, Isabelle connects the dots and realizes it was Lilith all along, but she and Alec barely have a reaction to the Mother of Demons being somewhere nearby.
JACE’S DREAMS. Having died, Jace is susceptible to Lilith’s influence for no longer holding any protection against demonic forces beckoning him. Nothing is ever Jace’s fault though. Clary blames herself for keeping Jace’s death a secret, and narrative wise all blame falls on Clary through her self-blame, but at no point does the writing ever point out that Jace is as guilty over his own demise as Clary. Even as Clary is fully aware of the part she played in this, it is not a consequence. The consequence of Jace suffering and being gone at the end only amounts to angst and is never held against her nor him. No one is absolutely furious that they did this, held such a huge thing secret and now Jace is gone because of it. No character is allowed that feeling because then Clary and Jace would not be the Absolute Winners they always are and their feelings would not be central and the most important thing.
There was never a good reason why they kept Jace’s death a secret. They just did. They agreed to never tell anyone but the writing never justified it either. Alec and Isabelle—even less so Maryse—are not part of the thought process. At all. It’s not about protecting them or their feelings. They simply do not exist as to this. It’s not about Clary feeling guilty for only asking for Jace and not all lives lost that night. It’s not about anything. Isabelle and Alec are not even allowed a reaction when Clary spills the truth about that night. It’s a sidenote. Simon—of all characters, SIMON—is given a bigger reaction because Alec and Isabelle’s simply does not exist. Clare does her all to protect Jace and Clary from any fury or admonition because they obviously cannot be the underdogs in under any circumstances, even those that are created completely by themselves.
This book, aside from annoying characters and their equally annoying relationship drama, does have a resemblance a plot, but it is just so broken. The plot points exist separately from each other, and the characters interact with them on occasion but not cohesively or consistently. The plot is not really at all of the importance as it should. All the stuff mostly just happen to the characters while their main focus is on fawning over each other. Even gearing towards the end the plot remains more a side note, and the wedding party doesn’t feel like the story is finally rising to a climax.
So what did our characters, once again, do?
Tumblr media
CLARY. Clary is Clary, nothing will change as to that, but at least of all the characters she instigates the plot a little bit at one point. Otherwise she is there to witness Jace’s torment. Clary is hurt over how Jace is treating her, but her self-respect never over-exceeds her endless understanding and sympathy over Jace’s troubles. She is just one of the characters, albeit the major one, Clare uses to validate the magnitude of Jace’s problems. Even in the end where Clary is greatly injured by Lilith, it becomes about Jace’s pain and his self-loathing. It takes such a precedence over taking care if Clary and her wounds. Jace prioritizes his own punishment of “not touching Clary” instead of being there for here and helping her. Jace thinks Clary “probably doesn’t want” him to “touch her”, imposes his own skewed beliefs on her, and then the writing has the audacity to say these two know each other on any fundamental level.
Though Clary has two moments of self-consciousness about her solely focusing on Jace, it serves nothing when other characters do not hold it against her. It does not change anything. It has no effect on anything. The storyline of Clary and Jace just repeats itself. Clary’s identity as Morgenstern is never really brought up at all. Characters may call her Clarissa Morgenstern but she never really has thoughts about her Shadowhunter name, whether it be Morgenstern or Fairchild. Compare this to Jace’s still on-going Wayland/Morgenstern/Lightwood/Herondale nonsense.
JACE. Clare is so insistent on having Jace go through everything possibly, to have the spotlight always solely on him, write him angsting so Clary can feel sorry for Jace is done to death here. I have no emotional investment, it’s actually in negative numbers, to give actual fuck about Jace and Clary and their third-wheeling friend Jace’s Torment. I realize that the reason I like Jace and Clary better in TDA is because I no longer have to read their internal lives, because their internal world is just filled to the brim with contrived relationship issues, angst, and thoughts solely about each other and their great love—all of it is exhausting. Like mentioned above, the writing is still going through Jace’s identity crisis though Jace seems completely fine, but Jace Lightwood is just a prelude to the “pay off” of having Jace Herondale. Characters like Lilith and Jem Brother Zachariah call him fist Jace Lightwood, then immediately after Jace/Jonathan Herondale. Why. WHY.
SIMON. Simon goes through this whole book just wondering what the hell is going on while not lifting a single finger to take action. Even when opportunities for him to grab the plot by its reins (his “girlfriend” being threatened with murder), he shrugs it off and wanders to do other stuff. From beginning to end, Simon remains confused. He feels guilty over dating both Maia and Isabelle at the same time but never enough to tell either of them, and then he just gets caught when Jordan meddles in. Simon seems to be the go-to character when anything Jace and Clary or Alec and Magnus related needs observing—not that the latter ones be given any meaningful one-one-one interaction without Simon being there to witness it.
ALEC. Who is this? I don’t know him. There’s a little bitch impersonating the quiet and reserved Alec that now, as Simon describes him, has grown into himself and seems more confident. More confident in Clare’s writing, however, seems to be the same as being a little bitch and fighting in front of other people about your private stuff because someone could not spare a page or two for any private moments like with Jace and Clary. Clare didn’t give a fuck, and even wrote Simon calling Alec and Magnus’ issues as “drama”, a word she does not use when it comes to anyone else’s relationship issues. Simon does not call Clary and Jace’s issues “drama”. The story does not benefit at all from Alec’s jealousy, and the way he and Magnus make up in the end in no way addresses all the underlying issues they were “fighting” about in the first place. Their ending in this book is so juvenile, kissing somewhere in the corner while others are trying to conduct an official business, Simon once again being their awkward witness.
MAGNUS. This guy acts like there is absolutely nothing he can do to mend his relationship with Alec. I don’t know what Clare though—probably fuck all—when writing Alec throwing a fit in every scene he’s in and highlighting Magnus’ ancient sorrows and sadness and all the bullshit that just underline the fact that Alec is incredibly young and Magnus fucking ancient, and Alec’s behavior only highlights this juxtaposition from hell. I have written about this so much already in the past years that I don’t have energy to say anything else. It’s exhausting how bad and atrocious this is.
ISABELLE. The only reliable person around. She shows up for Clary, Simon, and Maia because she is the only not self-centered character. She does more in this book than any other characters combined, yet her character is more an afterthought considering all the nothing she had going for her in the first three books. Isabelle reveals that her sense of love has being greatly altered by her parent’s unsuccessful marriage and Robert’s infidelity confessed to her by Maryse (not really a mom of the year), she can’t find happiness in love but do we focus on that ever when there is Jace’s, Clary’s, and Simon’s issues to worry about? No. Honestly, I have so little to say about her character, probably because she was one of the few that didn’t want to constantly fight. She’s just there to pass information.
JORDAN. This guy can just fuck off. The narrative around Jordan is incredibly manipulative. The writing does its utmost best to explain away Jordan’s behavior towards Maia before disappearing. The writing goes for sympathy while doing “careful” work of not excusing him. Yet Jordan is constantly up in Maia’s ass and incessant about redeeming himself. The narrative pushes Jordan constantly over Maia while not giving Maia the time of the day to have any say. Maia has a new tattoo on her back—make sure Jordan comments on it. Maia still wears a toe ring Jordan bought for her—make sure Jordan comments on it. Not only is Jordan/the writing so pushy about Maia, it gears for the romantic end for them, Maia somewhat “forgiving” Jordan and kissing him because both still have feelings for each other, especially now that Maia knows the truth. It is never about Maia getting closure or room for herself, it’s not really about Jordan’s redemption either—it’s about getting them back together and for fucking what? Oh right, Jordan is, like, super hot because Clare makes sure that every character tells you that.
This book is just a preface to the rest of the TMI. Now that TID exists, the writing is throwing TID references into it, even ones that have yet come to pass in the prequel trilogy. But it does the references so clumsily that my eyes have rolled permanently back and all I see is darkness.
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
i. Jem Brother Zachariah says had he seen Jace, he would have known who he was, further making Hodge’s inability to recognize Jace even more questionable.
ii. Parabatai as a term making a return because Clockwork Angel has, at this time, been already published. The only difference is that Clare wrote a series about parabatai that she liked versus TMI where she didn’t care for Jace and Alec as parabatai at all.
iii. There is no mention about the politics of Clave. What of those representative seats in CoG? How has the Shadow World changed since the 10 minute Mortal War?
iv. At this point in time, Alec’s character has gone under no development that would give plausibility to him wanting to better the Clave, be more inclusive towards all of the Shadow World, and work towards peace between the Nephilim and the Downworlders.
v. Clary and Jace bleed all over other people’s point of views but they don’t give the same courtesy, showcasing where Clare’s priorities truly lie
vi. Clare uses other characters always to prop up another character or a situation because she as an author seems to believe that having a fictional audience validates anything she is trying to sell in her writing
vii. Forty-eight times someone “could see” something and thirty-four times someone “remembered” something instead of peppering up the writing other ways
viii. When Jocelyn asks Clary where is Simon (at the Ironworks), Clary thinks that of course Jocelyn would ask about Simon and not Jace. WHY WOULD SHE ASK ABOUT JACE? She knows Simon his whole life basically.
ix. Sebastian’s hair is described as “seaweed” three different times which is redundant
x. The narrative really doesn’t want you to point a blaming figer at Jace. Lilith tells Clary three times in the same speech how Jace is totally in her control and not to blame him.
xi. I see no development in the Shadowhunter/Downworld relations because though Luke says the Clave is getting new members who are more tolerant, Simon’s point of view says otherwise.
xii. Like the end part of Chain of Gold, this whole book is just one big set-up for the two remaining books
xiii. Simon always thinks back on Clary as little girl he needed to protect and the fact that he never progresses through this (I’ve taken a peek at the Tales and same goes on there)
xiv. Jace takes every opportunity and then some to feel bad about himself and Clary is there to be his one-man cheerleading squad. Other characters aren’t allowed to have negative thought or feelings about Clary’s and Jace’s self-centered and shitty decisions.
xv. The writing focuses more on dirty looks Simon get for being a vampire than ever for Alec coming out as gay and being in a relationship with a Downworlder.
xvi. Magnus and Alec appear at 57% of this book.
xvii. Too much Simon for a Simon that does nothing productive as to the plot
xviii. Considering the amount of melodrama around relationships that dominated the first three books, it just completely takes over this one.
xix. Clary tells Simon to sort out his relationship with Maia and Isabelle before the wedding next Saturday. But the wedding is not next Saturday but the party the werewolf pack throws for Luke and Jocelyn at Ironworks is. (“I meant the wedding. It’s what, next Saturday?”/ “Look, just figure this out before the wedding. If they both think they’re going to it with you and they find out at the wedding that you’re dating them both, they’ll kill you.”)
xx. Not one book has made me so pissed off as this one did.

(I just tried to send a prompt but I don't think it went through so if you just saw this prompt please ignore, sorry 🙏)
This is something that I've been thinking about for a few days so I thought I'd send it in as a prompt.
Izzy was/is interested in magnus and is perhaps angry/bitter/confused on why magnus chose alec (over her, in her opinion)
I think izzy early canon has an almost childlike idea of what relationships are? So I think the fact that she's pretty, likes clubbing, isn't anti-downworld, and is interested in sex (and/or other superficial things) would make her think that she and magnus are romantically compatible
If this isn't your vibe that's no big deal but I thought I'd share in case it sparked an idea
i didn't go the bitter route (nothing wrong with it, it just didn't fit with my thoughts) and i agree with her childlike/naive idea of relationships and using sex for information. so i hope you enjoy this.

“And how exactly do you plan on getting Magnus Bane’s attention?” Alec asks, eyebrow raised as he tries to figure out what exactly Izzy thinks she’s doing. “He already declined your meeting and turned down the payment of the necklace for memories. What else do you think will work when that didn’t?”
“Alec, don’t be so dour. No one can resist me, not like this.” Izzy gestures to herself with a smirk, her white leather outfit showing off her muscles and runes and Alec frowns, an unfortunate amount of skin for something that is technically a mission. He really hopes she has enough ointment if they end up encountering ichor.
Izzy winks behind Alec at Jace and Fray and her hand comes up, playing with a very large necklace that Alec only vaguely recognizes. It clicks with a sigh, and he stares at her, before holding his hand out, unimpressed.
“Izzy, he turned it down. It goes back into the vault archives.”
“But it might be used to get a meeting. If I’m the one wearing it.” Izzy laughs and covers the red stone with her hand, “it’ll be fine hermano. Lighten up.”
Alec hears Jace scoff and mutter, “come on Iz. Alec doesn’t lighten up.”
It’s infuriating but Alec just grits his teeth. It’d be one thing to respond, but he doesn’t need to deal with another argument in full view of his shadowhunters. There’s been enough insubordination and Izzy and Jace will only get worse until he figures out how to deal with it.
Magnus has his attention on one person and one person only and he knows exactly how to play this.
“And who might such a lovely lady’s companions be?” Magnus asks, acting charmed as he kisses the air above Isabelle’s hand. She blushes, eyes wide and she’s already drunk on the thrill of thinking someone as powerful and aloof as Magnus is under her thrall. It’s a pity she’s so naïve
, but Magnus has heard about her among the downworld. A beautiful, talented lover, a vicious fighter and a naive, attempted informant who could be trusted to share more than was shared. She’s absolutely perfect for what Magnus has decided he wants.
“Clary Fairchild.” Isabelle says with a dramatic flourish, “who is in need of her memories. Our finest shadowhunter,” she winks at the blonde who looks proudly at Clarissa and then Isabelle motions to Magnus’ choice. “And my brother, Alec.”
“Short for Alexander?” Magnus asks, because he can’t help it.
“Yes?” Isabelle asks, puzzled, but she’s distracted when Magnus summons a drink to everyone’s hands with a snap of magic.
“I only thought that with such a lovely name is yours, it would be a pity to not have the same consideration.” Magnus flatters and she flutters her lashes before sending a smirk to Alexander. Alexander is barely paying attention, a frustrated look on his face as he studies his drink and takes a hesitant sip. His face twitches in a grimace of distaste and Magnus changes it with a thought, even as he idly pays attention to Isabelle.
“We brought this, to negotiate with you for Clarissa Fairchild’s memories.” Isabelle touches the jewel hanging around her neck with a sharp little smirk.
“It’s unfortunate, but I really don’t have a need for the necklace.” Magnus says, tone dripping with sincerity, “however I wouldn’t mind making another kind of deal. Especially not with someone of your rather predtiegous bloodline.”
Magnus gives her a lingering once over, to make his insinuation clear and Isabelle giggles and curls her hair with her fingers, looking up at him.
“I’m happy to come to an understanding with you.” Isabelle murmurs and she steps closer, “an entanglement for the memories, perhaps?”
Magnus smirks, because this is exactly what he wants.
“The easiest way to get Miss Fairchild’s memories back is in a sex-ritual. It will also be the safest way, as otherwise her memory integration could be painful.” Magnus shrugs, because it doesn’t really matter to him. “I’m sure the clave will give one of their little soldiers a week or two off, for the chance of finding their precious cup.”
“Izzy, are you serious?” Clarissa asks, suddenly looking concerned but Isabelle laughs, in fact she looks delighted by the idea.
“Oh Clary, this is part of the fun. Business and pleasure go hand and hand.” Isabelle tosses her hair with a playful nudge to Clarissa whispers quietly. “This is going perfectly.”
“It is indeed.” Magnus says, letting magic twist his voice into words of an oath matching her own. Louder, without the cover of magic, Magnus asks, “then, do we have an oath of accord? Bound by the blood of your house?”
“We do.” Isabelle says and she cuts her own lip with her teeth and speaks her agreement with blood on her tongue before she swallows it, keeping it safely within her own body. However, it’s not safe enough and Magnus smiles, smug and delighted.
“Then I’ll see you all in a few weeks.” Magnus tells them and he uses the prisms of time to step across the room and he wraps his arm around Alexander’s waist. “It’s a pleasure doing business with the house of Lightwood, Isabelle. I’ll have your house’s heir back when I bring the memories. Perhaps, we can negotiate for further services at that time.”
Magnus portals Alexander and himself away, through the space of time deposits them both in Edom and he keeps his hand on the small of Alexander’s back as he surveys the dark red of Edom. The place Magnus is set to rule while his father battles with Azazel in the hopes to take his power for his own.
Magnus spent the first three weeks redecorating and he lets Alexander sprawl across the umber and black marble and looks down at him with a pleased smile.
“Welcome to my palace, Alexander. You’ll be protected within the walls of my abode, including the gardens and balconies.” Magnus leans down and pets his fingers over Alexander’s mouth. “However, I suggest you not try to leave my wards, sweetheart. They very air in Edom will shred your lungs and the demons will rampage at the scent of your blood. I can only keep you as safe as you let me.”
Alexander stares up at him and Magnus wonders what he tastes like. If he still tastes like the gin drink he so clearly disliked, or if he tried the second one Magnus made for him and he tastes like strawberries now.

3, 7, 12 for the violence ask game. I was thinking of Shadowhunters but feel free to branch out!
Thanks for asking!!
3. Screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
But there are so many. Some of the worst are antis claiming that fictional tastes = irl preferences. More fandom specific is someone saying Victor Aldertree (kidnapper, inhumane experiments, torture, drugging his employees) deserves better than Clary Fray (because they think she's annoying ig?). Also, for yoi, people saying Yuri Pliestsky didn't deserve to win.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
Babygirl Alec who has never done anything wrong ever and his siblings are just so unfairly mean to him and he has no one in the world except Magnus. I still like Alec but the way fandom made him into this perfect, poor baby person is so off-putting.
I answered 12 here!

it’s so crazy how CLACE and clary fans will literally go above and beyond to defend her. I just saw a post (yes, on purpose 😭) about how she saved the world in the show and the angels were rude to her. yeah and who’s the one that created 95% of the issues while Alec and Magnus cleaned up her messes and jaces? who never paid their consequences? I think she’s worse in the books but she’s still on another level of insanity in the show. it’s funny to me how her fans will defend her for everything, and how they’ll be sad at CLACE ending and say their love will win in the end lmao I can’t get over people actually tolerating and finding them cute lmao 💀

me, wondering why Clary Fray never gave the other Shadowhunters the rune that made demons run when they saw it: 😐
that's some real plot armor there.

I honestly find it difficult to care about ANY character in shadowhunters except magnus.
• Idr hate clary as much as the fandom does but she IS kind of boring and the typical YA protagonist.
• Jace is just...whipped for clary wfor no no particular reason?? I get that he relates to clarys situation and wants to help but like?? Bro?? You barely know her and she doesn't know shit about the shadow world tf are u doing? 😭
• Alec is fine ig, I relate to him and actually understand him and he's actually pretty ok-ish as a character but I need to see more of him.
• izzy is just...there. she is mediocre as well but she's fine?? Idrk
• Simon was actually the only rational character at the beginning and damn, I feel extremely sorry for him. But he feels really trope-y (mc's male BFF who's in love with her but she chooses the brooding bad boi over him).
• Magnus is just *chefs kiss*. I really like him and his sass, how fabulous he is, his diva complex, it's all just so entertaining to watch. I want to see him more outside being Alecs LI.
