13 or 26 for the festive prompts, if someone else hasn't already chosen them. <3
Okay for real I am going to stop making these actual fics after this. Mostly because I really need to work on my smut swap instead. But for now, this one is the longest prompt response yet, heh. I hope you enjoy it!
Since I effectively did 26 last time, I went with 13.
13. neighbourhood festive decoration competition becomes dangerously competitive
"Nice tree, 2A," Jaime said sarcastically. "Did Charlie Brown give that to you?"
They'd encountered each other in the parking lot of their condo complex, Jaime on his way out and Brienne on her way in. Brienne's tree was visible in her window; she'd set it there on purpose with pride. It did look a little peaked from here, she had to admit, though she would never admit it to Jaime.
"What about yours?" she asked. "It's obviously compensating for something." She gestured at the enormous, hulking monstrosity in the condo above hers and eyed Jaime meaningfully. But the insult didn't land—he just smirked at her, too self-confident to ever question his dick size. It was obnoxious. She didn't let herself wonder whether his confidence in this area was earned. "How did you even get that thing through the door?" she demanded.
"Top floor owner privileges," he said carelessly. "You've got to pick up your game, 2A, you'll never win the condo decoration contest with that anemic thing."
"My name is Brienne,” she reminded him futilely. It wasn't like he didn't already know. “And I'm not trying to win the contest, I'm just decorating."
"Mm." Jaime lifted one brow. "Then I guess the prize is mine. Have a good night," he said, sauntering off towards his car.

2023 Fic Stats
February 2023, I decided to start tracking the amount of fic I read. I travelled a lot last year, quite a bit more than normal. I read a lot of fic when I travel.
I did a half year update at the end of June 2023. Between February and June, I read just under 13 million words.
February through December, I read just over 30 million words and 2,049 individual fic (though several are the same fic on a reread).
Some stats:
First read: Head, Hand, Heart by ddagent (@ddagent) (GOT canon divergence, Jaime/Brienne) (04 Feb 2023)
Last read: Other Brother by AlynnaStrong (ASOIAF canon divergence, Tyrion/Brienne) (31 Dec 2023)
Top 5 Most Read Authors
By number of fic. I reread frequently, so this is number of times I read a specific fic, not the author necessarily having written that number of fic.
ddagent, 78 fic (@ddagent)
Aviss, 72 fic (@aviss)
winterkill, 62 fic (@thebrimmingheart)

Really quickly I can think of three where this applies, if it is none of them you would have to try hard and think of more details and I will think and search if more exist: Chapter 19 and 23 of A Thousand and One by SeeThemFlying

Writing Tasklist
This is just a personal list where I organize my writing, with the hope that it will keep me challenged and motivated.
Fics I want to finish this year (2024):
The Vows Be Ours (ASOIAF/GOT)
As bards would later claim they’d foretold, the first wight was sighted at the Wall on the day Jon Snow was born at the Tower of Joy.
The horns rang thrice for the first time in thousands of years, and when the watchers stopped gawking at the creature of bone and ice that screeched up at them, they shot arrows until there was no place on its body to embed more. It was only after they’d wasted three barrels of boiling water and a handful of spears that the message came from wise Maester Aemon to drop a torch on its head. The fire took it long before Ned Stark found the strength to rise from his sister’s deathbed with her child and march away into the sands of Dorne, leaving behind him three corpses in white that would haunt him for years to come.
Currently: almost 8,300 words
Half-a-million Golden Dragons (ASOIAF/GOT)
A modern AU where Brienne accidentally buys Jaime at a bachelor auction. Except, Jaime thinks Brienne bought him because his father offered her money. This misunderstanding dogs their steps in the quest to have a date worthy of half-a-million golden dragons.
Written for the amazing @angelowl-fics
Currently: almost 16,350 words
What Brings Tomorrow (AOT)
Uprising arc AU where the Scouting Legion is defeated and Levi is captured in the clearing at the end of Episode 4. One year later, humanity's memories within the Walls have been wiped again, but Erwin has more gambles left to him in his quest to free humanity - even if he doesn't know it yet.
Currently posted on Ao3: almost 63,000 words
THIS FIC WILL NOT RECEIVE FURTHER UPDATES UNTIL I HAVE IT ALL WRITTEN DOWN.
I am you, but you're not me (ASOIAF/GOT)
Brienne had not expected, that night when she'd raised her candle to her mirror, to see a god's face reflected back at her. Except Jaime Lannister is not a god at all, and in bonding with him, Brienne struggles between honor and love.
Or: Cersei convinces Jaime to bind his soul to her through a mirror so they can always communicate when she marries Prince Rhaegar. Except, the spell is meant for soulmates, and while the twins think they are each others', fate is not of the same opinion.
Currently: almost 7,650 words
Champion, Hero, Friend (Heroes of Olympus)
Vignettes of Frank Zhang's friendship with Jason Grace throughout the years until the day that should have been the son of Zeus' death - and the after.
Currently: almost 3,000 words

For the ask game, Jaime and Brienne
Thank you for the ask @angelowl-fics!!!
Ship It (hell yes I ship it!)
What made you ship it?
It started after reading the weirwood dream/bear pit chapter in a 'A Storm of Swords.' That dream, the rush back, the clear affection they have for each other, fucking *swoon.* Toss in the BATB stuff, and I'm sold in a way I haven't been in a long time.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
The pure romance of it. There's a lot of brutality in ASOIAF, but Jaime and Brienne is a love story, and it's so beautiful in the framing and the possibilities for them.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Although I think 'The Winds of Winter' is a possibility, I have no hopes for 'A Dream of Spring.' So, whatever ending you think is best, or whichever one you want the most, that's the ending. (Last year, I wrote out an ending for a beloved TV show that was canceled on a cliffhanger, and it was just for me, but it was downright cathartic, and I'm gonna do the same here once it's clear the ending isn't coming). I'm not convinced that's an unpopular opinion, but it's not one I see a lot.
Ship asks!

Tagged by @pretty-thief, @wildlingoftarth (& I'm pretty sure @goddesspharo also tagged me weeks ago and I totally forgot to answer)
last song: Older by Searows, and because I am Mentally Ill™ about Jaime x Brienne (see: "current obsession" below) I'd like to add that the lyrics give me real Jaime Lannister "put this in the fire” vibes.
currently watching: Rewatching Skins (lmaooo I know, but it makes for good background noise. Though I gotta say, that show did not age well!!! At all!!!!)
currently reading: I've gone through a real reading slump in the past few years, and am just starting to get my mojo back. Just finished Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, and also read Circe last month (I'm very late to the party.) I've got A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara on hold at the library, because apparently I'm only interested in media that will completely destroy me?
current obsession: You all know it's Jaime x Brienne, I can't even pretend I'm normal about them. I'm also pretty invested in the Women's World Cup at the moment, but after the first two USWNT games it's starting to feel a little masochistic of me...holding out some hope for Sunday's game, but I'd be a lot more optimistic if someone would just punt our coach into the sun, first 😂 Oh and let's add Formula 1 to this List of Pain, which is all @sdwolfpup's fault since I finally read Heart Full of Gasoline earlier this year. I'm literally wearing a Lewis Hamilton shirt at this very moment. Look what you've done.

Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written fewer than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway
Thanks @pearly--rose for the tag! As you did, I’ve fudged the rules to sometimes go with the hook rather than the line. This was fun! Tagging @im-auntie-social, @commarogue, @halfagod, @angelowl-fics @scoundrels-in-love, @wildlingoftarth and you! if you want to play! Pls ensure you tag me if you do, I want to see 👀💖!
From most recent to oldest!
1. marvel at flowers you’ll have grown:
Brienne kept sneaking glances at him.
Insofar as it was possible from within the limited peripheral vision of a biker helmet: sneaking glances really necessitated turning her whole enormous head towards him whenever she thought he wasn’t looking. More fool her, he was always looking.
2. witness to the arc towards the sun
Wrestling off sweaty clothes, rinsing himself with a rough cloth over aching muscles, Jaime reflected: Improvement came in bruises and confession.
3. Alas, the frailty is to blame
Jaime is, he reminds himself regularly, Cersei.
At least that’s who he’s meant to be for the final two years of her degree — his degree — at her women’s only college — his women’s only college — while she finishes studying at his men’s only uni — her men’s only uni — where Cersei is Jaime and accomplishing his degree — her degree.
4. it’s not much (but my money’s on you)
The day Jaime Lannister crossed the floor Brienne lost 100 dragons.
There had been rumours that someone was defecting from government for all of two hours before Margaery had appeared at Brienne’s desk, eyes sparkling. In one hand she held an envelope. In the other, an old biscuit tin. Brienne barely glanced in the tin — saw the bills and a few crumbs clinging to the seams.
“What’s the buy-in?”
5. show me devotion (take me, take me)
With the soft fabric a gentle pressure against her lids, Brienne sees nothing, can’t even open her eyes. Jaime’s freed her from tunic, from trousers, from smallclothes and even the ribbon she wears around her wrist —
6. you turn the world around
The wind whipped at her cheeks, buffeting her jacket. She'd needed her pants loose but she ought to have chosen a more form fitting jacket.
7. gender, genre, guess i’m on one, bent both
Pushing into his dressing room, the applause is a lingering buzz just under his skin, Jaime grins in greeting, tugging off his wig.
8. And off they went, from here to there
There she was. At the edge of things, of course. Even stood next to a tree starting to sprout leaves again, Brienne stood out. She had eschewed armour for once, which was an improvement, but from the way the firelight lit upon just the hint of her furrow and the jut of her jaw, she was none too pleased about it.
9. possess the power
He finds one day, no — evening, when he is lucid, that Brienne is speaking of Ser Thor and Mjolnir.
10. if you push yourself, I will pull you on (I will be with you in the fray)
They enter the drift.

I'd love to know more about the dog show wip or Love is Blind AU! <3
The dog show WIP is one of my favorites that I don't think I'm ever gonna finish. 😂 It's where Jaime and Brienne are both dog handlers who show their purebred dogs, and they end up having to share a hotel room ~for reasons~ at this really important dog show. I've gotten stopped up on it because I couldn't quite pin down some of the emotional beats well enough to feel comfortable continuing it. I've got about 5k of the fic but if I were gonna finish it, I think I'd chop off the last 1k and rewrite from there.
They set up the room for the dogs: bowls of water in opposite corners when Rohanne growled at Dunc for getting too near; a small meal to keep their dogs happy; and comfort toys and blankets strategically placed. Dunc seemed surprised every time he turned around and saw Rohanne there, while she kept a watchful eye out for him at all times, warning him whenever he edged within her prescribed safe zone.
“Isn't she dog-friendly?” Brienne asked when Dunc dragged his rope toy too near Rohanne and she lifted her head and curled her lip.
Jaime looked up from where he was flipping through the room service menu. “She's fine in public, but this is her private space. She hates strangers being in her private space. Just like her owner.” He flashed Brienne a quick grin.
“Oh.” She looked down at the suit she was carefully ironing for tomorrow. “We really can go find a room somewhere else,” she told her shirt. “You don't have to do this.”
“You're not a stranger,” Jaime said in an unexpectedly soft voice, but when she looked over her shoulder, he was staring at the menu again, his back mostly to her. “We should order food soon, it's going to be a madhouse tonight.”
Had his shoulders always been that broad? Or was it just the crisp line of his button-up shirt stretching tautly along them that made them look that way? The white fabric made his skin look even more golden, like his heart pumped sunlight, not blood. Brienne stared at the exposed nape of his neck long enough that she nearly burned her shirt with the iron.

@angelowl-fics I wasn't sure anyone wanted to see more of that one! But I do have more of it.
I'll give you the first chunk of the next chapter.
Years ago, when the New Times were just beginning, Jaime Lannister thought he knew what Hell was. Hell was a place, and he was living in it. A world actively falling apart around him, masses of people dying, the Old Times so clear and recent in his memory that if he closed his eyes he could still see it, could almost reach out and touch it just beyond his fingertips. When he opened his eyes, the Old Times would dissolve nauseatingly into the New Times, into broken plates and empty pipes and the stench of death all around him. Everything was ruined, and nothing mattered, and there was nothing left to lose. That was Hell, or so he thought.
In a way, he had thrived in it, his own idea of Hell. He had been talented and reckless and better to rule in hell than serve in heaven, et cetera. It didn’t matter what he did, so he could do whatever he wanted. Be whoever he wanted. It was terrible and lonely and worst of all it was fun, and to avoid feeling bad about the fun of it he did it all more.
That was a younger man. Impossibly younger. Older than the foolish boy he had been in the Old Times, but not by much. Nihilism is only fun for the young. After a while it’s exhausting to maintain. You can’t step in the same room twice without leaving some impression there, or carrying some part of it with you, and sooner or later you are out of new places anywhere within reach, and you wear yourself out trying not to accidentally mean something.
Anyway, he was wrong. Hell is when everything matters. Absolutely everything. Every action laden with meaning and portent. Every place infested with memory, with ghosts. Every thing reminding you of some other thing, pulling on some other nerve until one of them crackles with pain. All connected, in a terrible web of grief and loss. And superimposed over all of it is Her. The ghost of Her, burned onto the retina of his missing right eye like a still frame.
Hell is a unit of time. This minute, and the minute after that, and the minute after that. A long and agonizing stretch of minutes and hours and days in a world without Her. It is a unit of time to the power of itself and it will never end.
He carries his Hell into the Black Mountains over a road that is more of a memory of a road. There is asphalt trapped somewhere under layer upon layer of ice, but no longer visible to the eye. It is a smooth incline surrounded by craggy and jagged angles and it is not much easier than the bare snow to walk on but probably not going to lead him over a cliff, and that is good enough for this journey. For certain no vehicle has passed this way in a long time, maybe not since the Before time.
It leads him between two mountains, one peaked and white with snow and one flat-topped, black as onyx. He struggles for purchase on the ice even with the boots Jon Snow had given him that were made for just this kind of journey. The metal cleats grip nicely through the snow and the grittier ice, but as he ascends the ice goes mirror smooth and it takes much longer to be sure of his steps. If he does not watch himself he will find himself sliding backwards, and then only the collapsible ice axe will stop him descending helplessly down the way he came.
It takes great mental and physical effort to ascend, and he is grateful all the way for the occupation of his attention. His skin slicks with sweat and his mind focuses so strongly on his shivering steps that hours slip past him without notice. Hours that he would have had to wade through like sticky mud otherwise, heavy with grief.
In the night the wind is strong enough to sail him down the mountain all on its own, and he has to wedge himself into a rock face and bunker down for the night. Those hours are more difficult, and much slower.
The nights are always the worst. Others don’t sleep. If anything, they prefer the nights for the cold and the darkness. It is suspected that they can see in the dark, though obviously there is no way to prove it.
The worst thing, in the early days, was thinking about all the people you could remember from the old world, and imagining where they ended up. Alive? Dead? Or Other? Is your first grade teacher a frozen corpse right now, gnawing on someone’s arm? Is she trapped in a house or a car or a grocery store somewhere, surrounded by monsters? Did she escape somehow over the sea? Or is she in a landfill, burned to ashes with a thousand others? What about your first crush? Your grandmother? Your best friend? There was no way to check back then, the Lists were not yet circulated. The internet was patchy and then gone. There were newspapers of a sort, hand copied, printed and posted to telephone poles, but those too did not last.
When you looked at the Others in their endless wandering, or rushing straight at you, did you recognize any of those faces? Sometimes he thought so. Sometimes at night, he would think back over the frozen skin, the hair color, the clothes, and wonder if someone felt familiar, if they might have been a neighbor or a coworker once.
That was the early days, when it was not yet clear that the Others were not a temporary disaster but a permanent condition. They slowly became a feature of the landscape, like weather - something you could forecast and sound the alarm for, like tornados or hurricanes. They would learn to predict them, avoid them, if not prevent them. After the first year, you didn’t look at their faces anymore. They were all the same face, anyway: blue, frozen.
Many things had been tried -- trapping them, negotiating with them. For awhile they thought bunkering down would allow the things to simply decompose. Stay in your bunkers, the authorities said, don’t let them turn us and eventually they will be gone. But it was too slow. Maybe if they weren’t frozen, their dead limbs would have rotted right off and rendered them harmless -- but they are well-preserved in their cold. They could not heal from injury, and that alone would reduce their numbers slowly over time. But the living would run out of provisions faster than that.
Killing them was both simple and difficult. Anything less than destroying their brain or their spine will slow them down, maybe, but they don’t die. In a big crowd you can hack off their legs so they can’t chase you, but they’ll go on crawling after that, possibly forever. And eventually, after dragging themselves around for years and years, that same creature might come upon some poor soul sleeping or trapped somewhere and wrap his cold hands around their throat. Better to kill them if you can.
(But what does killing even mean, for dead things?)
He’s had a lot of time to think it over since those days. He must have struck down nearly a thousand of them, during his career on the Kingsroad. A thousand monsters who were once people. But he didn’t kill them. They were already dead. They were Death itself reaching out through dead hands to claim more lives. That was the only will at work, the only thing the Others hungered for. More death. More dead things.
The Stranger must have gotten tired of waiting for people to die the slow way. He was ending his career all at once, in a grand finale, clearing out all of the lives in Westeros for good so that he could hang up his hat and try some other line of work.
It’s as plausible an explanation as he’s ever heard, for what has happened to the world.

Fic Stats Halfway Through 2023
Haven’t had time to do a WIP Wishlist since round 20 in April. Am still reading and slowly commenting. Travelled for work twice as much in the first half of 2023 as I did all of 2021 and 2022 combined. Loads of downloading and reading offline.
In February, I randomly decided to track my fic reading this year. Have some stats as of the end of June. I haven’t read a single fic that doesn’t contain Jaime x Brienne. Sometimes paired with others, too. Haven’t been this monofannish in years.
I read fast, comment slowly, and write rec posts even slower. Not an official rec post, but I recommend everything and everyone in these lists.
Limitations: I know I haven’t written down all the fic I’ve read. I’d say at least 90% of it is in the spreadsheet. None of the lists but one include WIPs or they would dominate everything because I reread with every new chapter. I obsessively reread things. Top authors may appear more times than they have number of fic. Means I’ve reread some of their stories at least twice. I am awful at spreadsheets and manage only the most basic information. Absolutely no pretty charts either.
Time for the stats!
Words Read Feb - June: just under 13 million
Authors I’ve Read 20+ Times:
aviss (61) ddagent (53) tall_wolf_of_tarth (31) angel-deux (29) janie_tangerine (29) winterkill (29) chrkrose (27) Lady_in_Red (25) sdwolfpup (24) Zeta_Mei (20)
Most Read Completed Fic:
so all the world can see by EllisJay (ASOIAF) (9) Undisclosed Desires by Roccolinde (GOT) (5) To be in your arms again by sdwolfpup (GOT) (4) Beyond the Ice and the Fire by littleobird (GOT) (3) Choices by Gwen77 (GOT) (3) Ice by Gwen77 (GOT) (3) They Make You Swear and Swear by angelowl (GOT) (3)
Certainly not obvious I’ve often been in the mood for a show fix-it. I’m tentatively working on one myself.
Pretty much everything else in the spreadsheet has been read twice.
Most Read Currently-Being-Updated-and-Still-a-WIP Fic:
Come-into-my-castle by Zeta_Mei (ASOIAF canon divergence) (13) Pound of Flesh by The_Midget (GOT canon divergence) (9) Simple by languageintostillair (GOT fix-it) (7) when the sun shine, we shine together (Reality Show AU) (7) lover boy. by SeeThemFlying (Modern AU) (6)
Top Five Longest Completed Fic Read Once:
Heart Full of Gasoline by sdwolfpup (Formula One AU) (406,767) Diamond in the Rough by cardinalgirl75 (Baseball AU) (374,333) Honor Compels Me by angel_deux (GOT S6 canon divergence) (335,399) The One: Game of Thrones Edition by motorbike_on_the_avenue (Reality Show AU) (236,912) Baby Mama by SeeThemFlying (Soulmate + Surrogate AU) (222,769)
Top Five Longest Completed Fic Read Twice:
Brienne-centric Kinktober 2021 by dancinginthecenteroftheworld (varies) (101,177) And Counting by nubbins_for_all (GOT S8 canon divergence) (97,301) All is Black by Weirwoo (GOT fix-it) (65,455) The Right Question by Aviss (pre-canon canon divergence) (56,354) Butterfly Effect by Aviss (pre-canon canon divergence) (51,274)
I know this debate goes around and around. This is where I learned GOT fic is canon divergence for me unless it specifically includes Jaime leaving. It’s fix-it at that point.
