Ok this has been bothering me all day. I saw a post talking about how Rauru and Sonia did more for Zelda than Rhoam did and… I’m once again going to defend Rhoam, cuz that’s a very unfair thing to say and a horrible comparison to make.
Rauru and Sonia helped Zelda with her time powers and learning about the secret stone. Rhoam didn’t help her with her sealing power. Why? Cuz he has no magic and he clearly wasn’t the one who had it. Her mother was the one who had the power and was the one to teach her. Rhoam had no idea what he was doing, he didn’t understand the magic, and he hoped that if she dedicated her life that it would awaken so that the calamity wouldn’t destroy their home.
Well he should’ve tried to help her anyways right? Well, yes it’s easy to say that, unfortunately Rhoam was put in a very bad position of being king with the looming threat of the APOCALYPSE!!!! I think it’s implied that Rhoam married into the family, since his wife had the sealing power from the blood of the goddess or whatever, and seeing how he’s Hylian, he wasn’t a prince from another kingdom since all other kingdoms in this world have small round ears. For all we know, he was a prince consort who was never raised to be king. We don’t know what he was doing before, but with his wife’s sudden death and the responsibility of protecting his kingdom, he didn’t make the right choices. Which isn’t an excuse, but in his position, it’s an explanation. Rauru and Sonia didn’t have an apocalypse threatening to happen, in fact, they were in an era of peace and the future seemed bright. Of course they had time to hang out with Zelda and have tea parties with her. They seemed to be relaxed and having fun, which makes sense seeing how there didn’t seem to be much of a threat to their kingdom, minus Ganondorf, but I don’t think either of them saw him as a huge threat, seeing how they were absolutely blindsided by him.
It’s implied in AOC that Rhoam shouldered all of the responsibilities of the kingdom, and it seemed that he was under a significant amount of pressure during the calamity. And I feel like he mostly did that so Zelda could focus on awakening her power. She didn’t seem to have many responsibilities as princess save for awakening her power and helping out the champions. She is barely 17 so it makes sense that she’s not ruling the kingdom, but I do feel like Rhoam did all that stuff so she could focus on the calamity itself. And I’m sure in his stress he grew frustrated whenever Zelda focused more on the machines than awakening her power. Which was not the right thing to do, but come ON the world is literally about to end and the ONLY piece of the puzzle they need is Zelda!!! Some people forget that she HAD to awaken her powers otherwise the world was going to be destroyed! And it almost was cuz they were awakened too late! They were in such an unfair situation! And it’s not fair to compare him to Rauru and Sonia who were not in the same situation he was in, who were lying around in the grass and drinking tea because the calamity wasn’t there.
Rhoam is such a well written character that acts the way you’d expect someone in his situation to act. And he has so much regret over some of the things he’s had to do to protect Hyrule. You can read it in his journal where he finally gives up and desires to act more like a father to Zelda, you can see it when he takes Terrako away from Zelda, and you can see it when he’s a ghost 100 years after everything is destroyed. He’s so guilty but he did what he thought was best so that Zelda could not have a throne to nothing, so that Hyrule will be safe. And there’s a lot of things he could’ve done better, but people don’t act rational under that much stress. Like come on, would you? Don’t lie you absolutely wouldn’t.
And this post isn’t meant to diss on Rauru and Sonia, I like them in their own ways. But it’s kinda dumb whenever people love complex characters and then turn around and hate on characters like Rhoam and make them completely one-dimensional when they’re not. Y’all are completely unfair to Rhoam.

can i present you with a random scenario. what would happen in an au hypothetical where only one of the champions survives the calamity. idk like what would happen for each champion im curious
ywah you can!!
ok this depends on if you mean like. taking links surviving role or surviving alongside link. in my au the former would be.. a bit more complicated? actually that could make for a really fucked up scenario of which i shant say as . probably spoilers? actually no . in wotb link actually dies early (a recent development meta-textually). so basically if hes already in there and a champion has to be put in their instead theres two routes. one he could never be put in there at all, already gone by the time they find the SoR. or two he Is in there but something just Fails Really Badly. it just.. wouldnt heal him. so its a last ditch effort to put a champion in there.
long text below Be Warned.
so while we’re on the topic of that scenario!!! lets start with it!! 1 mipha. she would send out an ok signal to the other champions, and she’d either check on her people first or try to get vah ruta to the nearest champion to help them. or hell she might check on zelda first. i think the plan without link would be to either say fuck it we ball and impa would take zelda to the castle, Or just go straight to kakariko instead as a safety thing. i think she’d actually check on zelda as she’s seen as the most important, then try to reach the champions. i think she’d have the same problems the champions descendants have getting into the divine beasts honestly, though vah naboris would be easy theres no water close enough. vah medoh is not only too high but has an actual shield. vah rudania walks around too much and causes way too much damage to death mountain. she could fire her shot at one of the divine beasts, but that would kill the champion inside it, wouldnt it? so she just resigns to help zelda and impa. she can take care of guardians well enough honestly. her cause of death would probably be either malice or trying to heal zelda or impa While Being Fought at. shes put in and boom 100 years later. i dont know how scales work but i think they wouldnt regrow in the SoR and she’d be left with scarred skin. either rhoam or a zora she knew would greet her on the great plateau. rhoam… wouldnt exactly be happy about. link not being there. mipha being able to defeat her blight is proof to him that shes capable, but also he really has no other options. who else is going to help zelda? mipha had defeated one of his creations.. so she could defeat him. she kind of has to, master sword or not- she’s the only one left. if a zora she knew was there instead i think itd reflect on her personally more? like her healing, her tendency to look after others instead of herself, how she’s dealing with this. the zora wouldnt force her to help zelda, maybe not even telling her. but yeag. still amnesiac, and things go mostly the same as canon besides some.. hiccups. going into zoras domain would have her literally not be able to leave, let alone go to zelda or any of the divine beasts. dorephan and muzu would gush over her because well. they havent seen her in 100 years!! and shes alive!!! she’s been martyred which would be. uncomfortable to her. because she doesnt know who that statue is, even if it looks like her. sure shes calm and nice, but the statues face.. it looks. serene almost. calm. lifeless, dead. vah rutas been protecting the place, and vah ruta would also say hi!! she’d get a memory of herself here which could include her little self or her pre cal self Hiding Things, like vulnerability. itd make her uncomfortable as well!! AND SIDON. sidon would have mixed feelings, but he would absolutely hang out with her in a more.. chill manner. just like. camping and eating. frog hunting. showing her how to ride a waterfall like she taught him. they get to know each other better like. well like siblings. she might do a pre cal and when she suggests leaving while doing a chill hangout she’d do That Smile. the hiding something smile basically, or ‘im the mature sibling’ smile. and sidon would be like ‘youre making that face’ >:( and shed go (sweating) ‘what’. but yeah. sidon would either go with her and travel with her or establish a mail system no matter the cost. They Will Talk damnit. going into other regions is hard when you cant really handle many temperatures that arent in the water. im ppretty sure zoras domain has chillfin trout in it so i think she’d do better in colder weather rather than hot, which sucks because two divine beasts are in hot weather. she’d probably still need at Least a ruby circlet though because hebra is probably too cold, or just sucks because of the snow. death mountain she’d have to put. so much flame resistance elixrs on. she’d also wear a sapphire circlet all the time there even if its not in the flaming zone. she doesnt like the hot springs </3. yunobo and her would-
-get along i think. she’d probably be slightly annoyed at how scared he is but other than that no complaints. he’d be really nice without being a pushover and i think she’d relate/admire that. she’d eat smotherwing butterflies. daruk would be really happy to see her. getting into gerudo town sucks so so soo badly. sand keeps getting under her scales, its Dry, its Hot (during the day), and theres not like. an elixr for her scales. the only real place sand Isnt on her is the lake in the kara kara bazaar. i think she’d put on flame resistant elixir there just so it protects her scales. or she gets some armour to help her with that. otherwise she’s let into gerudo town. vah naboris would be a nightmare for her. she’d have to have like. a hazmat suit for that one. and the yiga!! she wouldnt like them the moment she hears of them, which has to do with link pre cal but saying too much is spoilers. honestly though. i dont think theyd try to kill her, at least not Nearly as much. after all shes Just Some Zora. no sword, no divine intervention. after getting the thunder helm though theyd go after her probably. but yeah she does Not like them and will actually fight them the first chance she gets. this caused problems for the thunder helm stealth mission. urbosa and revali would be impressed to see her but also worried (revali) and defeated/giving up almost (urbosa). she and paya would get along really well and she’d clean with her Instantly. though paya would tell her that she doesnt have to + she should. be doing other things. she’d buy links house which. weird feelings about it so she doesnt really live in it but its just. There. like a memorial. she’d also be annoyed at purah teasing her about having to get parts but she’d mask it. she’d like indexing fish and birds in her compendium, and the sanke carp Fascinates her. she’d like kass’s music and really just sit and listen to him play. she’d also try to tell him what the shrine solution was once she figures it out. though i dont think he’d tell her the calamity legends. impa does however. she’d find lurelin and would So Badly want to go into the sea. however its too much salt. she’d probably fish there honestly, fishing rod and all. also though seafaring is dangerous for her so. no eventide unless a good boat rather than a dodgy raft. she.. tries to make it into korok forest. but she doesnt know how, and if link ever told her how he did it she cant remember. also its Super haunting for her i think she’d minorly see horrors in the mist so. yeah no forest for her. she’d defeat ganon though, and she’d probably live in zoras domain but take zelda with her. OH ALSO HER MEMORIES…. zeldas photos wouldnt help her too much. only 1 has her in it. so she’d get memories based on her surroundings, like how link gets snippets of the champions. seeing her trident would get a memory, the veiled falls shrine would have a memory, goponga village would have a memory, maybe the east post would have one?, and she’d have a zelda memory somewhere in zoras domain (maybe with those history tablets, or in an area with wildlife). and if link has a grave thatd also have a memory. she’d also get a memory of impa because hell yeah. im tempted to make link a spirit that follows her like the other champions honestly. but yeah post cal sidons been set as the ruler so. she can do what she wants. she’d mostly help zelda though.
in the scenario she lives alongside link, she’d tend to him on the great plateau and generally help out purah and robbie. she’d have to be at the domain most of the time though, and she’d be next in line for the crown rather than sidon. she’d grow older and do her best to help with the side effects of the calamity. she HATES yiga even more here than the last scenario. she also hates guardians, but she can take care of even the stalkers now. she’s there to greet link instead of rhoam, and helps him recuperate. she doesnt have a paraglider at first so for him to get down he’d need to climb down. or she couldve made a river system into the great plateau so if he holds his breath he can dive in and out. he still has to do the shrines zelda let mipha know that he has to. she might also travel with him honestly. she’d also spearhead the guardians on the great plateau when she finds out some are active. things would tense between them as time goes on but thats another story. basically old lady who may want to kill.
if revali survived!! uhh first scenario. he would fly all the way to the other champions first, and would check on zelda last. he’d also try to see how the village is doing before he flys to the champions. he cant get to naboris or ruta because he cant see anything, and rudania is at a Really painful angle, and with death mountain erupting.. its a pipe dream to make it there. he dies also to malice, or maybe to a guardian shot. same deal as mipha, either rhoam or a rito he knows greets him. rhoam has the same feelings (+exasperation because of all the champions, it was revali. and he’s a lot more of an old man to him with like changing the deal and teasing him. they would probably fight if not for the fact they dont hate each other). if it was a rito theyd focus more on flying than anything else. actually. he can get off the great plateau. i mean unless he forgot how to glide/one of his wings couldnt work he could. simply get down there. so for plot lets say he forgot how to fly and glide. once he learns how to again he goes to kakariko, and once he learns of rito village hes goes straight there and almost never leaves it. its His Hometown damnit!!! the nostalgia would get to him. though not knowing anyone would be… weird to him. but he’d still love the village. he and medoh would banter but theyd miss each other. he has to get to vah ruta by walking and hes SO mad about it. he would absolutely fight muzu if muzu hated him like he hated link. maybe muzu would doubt his skills and insist no outside help is needed. mipha would be sad probably. not to see him but just to see her family. but i think her and revali would be friends like pre cal and theyd have fun just with now looming dread. the flame resistant stuff would suck to put on, but he isnt going to drink it so he suffers instead. he would probably like yunobo. he’s able to reassure him better and yunobo is like you mentioned more reasonable in general so. yeah!! OH YEAH also he and sidon.. hm. i think sidon would tease him/punk him a lot. be more mean but thatd be why theyd get along in the end. frienemies. vah naboris. would be awful. sand in his feathers the same way mipha had sand in her scales. itd be Doubly hot for him, so he’d have to go at night but rito have terrible night vision so it sucks, and he cant even get into town. he spends a good minute arguing with the guard, not about wanting to be let in but to do Divine Beast things. eventually riju has been summoned and, while exasperated, she believes him. he still has to get the thunder helm, and hes more neutral on the yiga than mipha is. he sees them as a threat but like. he doesnt despise them. if they werent threats itd be fine. i think hes also slightly scared of them. he sneaks through, master kohgas defeated and the yiga are after him, and actually doing naboris hed also need a hazmat suit for. though its a bit better because ARCHERY YEEAAHH 🔥🔥🔥🔥💶💶💶🦅🦅🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹. urbosa would feel the same like she did with mipha, except more exasperated and defeated because Its Revali. daruk would be happy to see him though still. link may or may not be a spirit here? itd be tense at first but i think itd mirror their friendship arc pre cal (of which i need to answer that ask i am sorry) except the roles would be swapped. youll see. anyways yeah. payas meh to him, doesnt like impa a lot but doesnt hate her, would debate purah probably Somehow. he wouldnt buy links house probably. memory locations: his bow and arrow, the flight range, the tabantha village ruins, tanagaar canyon/dinraal, mabe village perhaps, one of zelda same with mipha, links grave, and maybe one of impa. also possibly one at the secret hot springs. post cal he’d constantly help rito village and thats it. Maybe help zelda if she sends a letter but yeah. he’d have to find a hobby though
living along side link. he would also help purah and robbie, though less so. he’d be forced to greet link but in the meantime he’d protect his village and basically become the elder. seeing a young link whiles he old would be… disconcerting. he’d probably feel a mixture of guilt and anger. same deal as mipha though he has a paraglider for him. he wouldnt kill the guardians however and would just find a route for him to avoid them. he’d also be straightforward about what happened to link as opposed to mipha, so their relationship would be less strained as time goes on. he travels with him up to rito village and no more. i think he’d also visit the champion descendants to do his best to help them out.
daruk!! he’d go to the champions straight away. vah ruta is isolated in water which he cant get to (and also has a shield), vah medohs way too high up, and naboris wont stay still, and though hes mighty he can absolutely get crushed by naboris’s legs. god how would he die. yiga misfire maybe???? malice once again?? probably just an accumulation of malice. hed try to instantly leave the plateau (no fall damage like majoras mask goron rock ball form) and while rhoam (if he was there) would try to tease him he’d have to just tell him ‘hey. you Have to do this. Its important. please’ or would straight away tell him the truth. if a goron spirit was there . shrugs. theyd probably focus on strength and building enough to get ganon. goron city, hailed as hero though hes a bit uncomfortable about that and tries to both take it and be mature(?) about it if that makes sense. like hes more comfortable with it than mipha, but it still puts him off a little. vah rudania would hate to see him (rudania missed him so much its unbelievable). vah ruta would be. one Hell of a divine beast to do. he’d have to use a thunder sword instead of arrows, and he’d be A Test to sidons strength as a whole. OH ALSO yunobo would love him !!!!! him bludo and yunobo would probably hang out post cal. anyways. vah naboris he would simply slam into their legs instead of bomb arrows. still would need the thunder helm. master kohga would respect daruk enough however business is business and right now theyre enemies. daruk would not like the yiga like mipha . closer to the hate scale than revali but less than mipha. he’d be pretty pissed at them and wouldnt realize why for a while. the yiga have to get inventive when he becomes wanted which means new weapons methinks!! also he’s let into gerudo town. gorons r genderless so. hell yeah. and. ok so daruk cant get up to vah medoh theres. not many options. either he’s chucked from hebra peak at all of medohs batteries and is finally chucked on board, Or if youve seen klerics 10 ways link can make it up to that divine beast on his own he does that. also also urbosa would have more hope with daruk than mipha and revali. revali would secretly be happy to see the guy. link might be a spirit as usual. memories! his stone smasher, death mountains peak, military training camp, the place where link saved him which he mentions in his diary, the hot springs/springs near the base of death mountain, honestly probably meeting mipha (maybe trading fish) ((where no clue, though he has memories of the other champions like all of them of which they arent the samw memory locations in botw. like miphas statue doesnt trigger a memory for daruk and anyone else ok sorry)), uhh zelda, impa?, links grave, and maybe some place in akkala.
the second scenario he would constantly try to help the descendants rather than link as he figures purah and robbie got it covered, but he visits them while they do great plateau things and they chat!! maybe try to take care of guardians. he would be the most straightforward with link, both in helping him gain strength but in his memories. he’ll offer to travel but wont force it on him. other than that he’d stay on death mountain with rudania. most things wouldnt be a threat with daruk around honestly. just a support beam basically. kind of sad because i. dunno what kind of character arc he would have in most of this. </3
urbosa!!! she’d take a quick glance at her people but go to zeldas and the champions aid. its hard to tell which she’d go for first.. like on one hand she’s biased towards zelda but she just went through a blight and can hear the SOS signals of the others. maybe multitasking? getting naboris to zelda as fast as she can, picking her up/dropping her off (which could lead to some chatting on the way), and then to a divine beast, maybe realizing about a quarter left of the way that theyre already dead and theres no point now. mipha would have a similar revelation probably just.. later. but urbosa dies helping zelda and impa, either distracting something or getting ambushed. great plateau, you know the drill. if rhoam was there theyd have some, “lovely” chats (theyd be So petty against each other. she’d find out her smiting power by trying smite him. though they are friends and have fun and would drink with each other.) and once her whole deal is revealed they have a little heart to heart, and this becomes even more serious to her. she’d go straight to the castle or would reluctantly go to kakariko taking rhoams suggestion seriously. if a gerudo was there it’d probably be more fighting training/regaining strength, plus. warnings of the world beyond this plateau. anyways. impa and her would be besties (though impa would be.. too lax for her). and she’d enjoy paya a lot, maybe try to flex on her to tease her. zoras domain dorephan and her would get along i think AND OH WAIT. SHE HAS LIGHTNING POWERS. if she can get the thunder helm she could finish vah ruta in one strike (though it Does worry the zora a bit). she may throw shade at muzu for his hate of hylians and of the shekiah tech (especially the latter i think). sidon and her would be battle buddies i think, theyd constantly try to outdo each other but still respect each other to have Actual Teamwork. dynamic duo that will kill you. also she makes fun of him sometimes. anyways. mipha would be pretty happy to see her! death mountain. either drinks the elixir first and then realizes most people apply it on their skin so. oops. but she doesnt really care so she keeps drinking it like its champagne. chugging. despite being used to the desert she still doesnt like the heat. yunobo and her would also get along i think!! she would just immediately kill whatever hes afraid of and he looks in. slight fear. though the mines was a workout for her and shes making sure he knows he Owes Her for that one. anyways daruk would be ecstatic to see her theyre Instant Besties. new ghost pal perhaps as well. he’d yell like a sports fan everytime she beats the blight/gets a hit. its chaotic that time the energy is just net positive despite the circumstances. hebra. honestly. she might be ok with it? the desert is cold at night and she lives next to snowy mountains. nice change of pace. teba gets her up there pretty easily, maybe bow troubles? slices the targets with her sword as teba watches in surprise yet defeat. revali and her would, once again, be very petty. however revali would still worry with the blight but she’s fine. i think she’d hate the rotating angle of vah medoh. aaand naboris!!! no freeing to do she just gets to see a long time friend of hers (naboris). she’d love riju and riju may feel a bit of pressure, but over all she’s welcomed back with open arms (maybe some new locals not recognizing her which would be interesting). though she’d have to clear the yiga. now on the hate scale, she probably wants them annihilated (i am so sorry). like riju would have to pull her back saying ‘heyheyhey yeah they suck but dont??? kill them??? or their entire clan????’ which would only barely stop her. she wouldnt even try to sneak through she’d fight them and threaten kohga for the thunder helm. kohga lets her have it without fight and makes a retreat, though he probably lays low? if he hunts her afterwards is debatable because on one hand she Is a threat to them and ganon, but also she Can kill them before they teleport and retreat. so a bit of a choice. also hateno, purah and her wouldnt be-
too much of friends but theyd get along well enough. same with robbie. she wouldnt get links house to her its not her problem. or maybe she does but because she’d think itd be a nice place for zelda. kass and her would just be diplomats to each other. link spirit maybe shrugs . memories!! sword and shield, kara kara bazaar, southern oasis?, shield surfing champion shrine that she did, patricia maybe?, digg dogg suspension bridge, a spring memory with zelda, flora and fauna with zelda, links grave, impa, the champions yadda yadda. the memory numbers probably dont match up between all the champions sorry
second scenario!!! exclusively helps zelda and either stops her from letting ganon eat her or tries her best to fight ganon before retreating and he eats zelda. then she just. wanders. purah probably helping her cope or just. do things. she might even stay in kakariko for a bit, and she moves out of gerudo town. she’d say goodbye to everyone of course. but ywah. also maybe guard kakariko from yiga of which cado would fear her immensely. she’d either greet link or let rhoam do it and just meet link at kakariko and be Cryptic and Vague like he was but push him towards helping zelda, maybe even traveling with him. however she’d probably try to have him stay On Track constantly which would go. poorly. either that or she silently judges him but doesnt say anything. she’d only really hammer in to Go To Castle once all the divine beasts are free. they probably split off though, urbosa going to either chill or help in some way just elsewhere. like helping robbie light his ancient oven and getting guardian tools. also she has more wrinkles now shes super super old
if link isnt revived but the champions arent put in the SoR itd just be a mix of the two scenarios, slowly chipping at the divine beasts while helping out globally and getting old and having to cope with everything afterwards because they still have their memories
this . may not have been what you meant. i am sorry. however. thumbs up
ALSOALSO wanting the yiga dead is not a morally pure/correct course of action for them. it is not morally right thing to annihilate an entire group of people this isnt a bug its a feature. them wanting the yigas dead is not good. just in case.

how did gaffen + zelda feel about the lockup vs the castle town prison? also . im slightly afraid to ask this but how does gaffen feel about his hometown/raurus settlement post or pre cal?
get ready for an insane amount of shit I just made up with no canon basis just because I like my hyrule kingdom clearly morally ambiguous if not outright just bad in true oot/ww/tp fashion because as stated I think I should be allowed to hit fujibayashi with hammers
ok so first of all. for reference. the scale of shit in gboh is bigger than it is in the actual game. to account for how much time it takes in game-time to get around the map Etc and also because I think it should be bigger. this goes double for castle town it is larger and the lockup is larger. castle's probably the same size though
so fun fact gaffen has actually been present at a few executions :) the lockup is not commonly used pre-calamity, at least not as much as the time it was built. mostly it's a place where the royal guard hangs out when they're off-duty/occasionally will trap monsters. recently though they have been keeping a few prisoners down there. yeah remember how i was talking about the neo-yiga. uh. basically theres two yiga clans in my au. anyone they suspect of working with them ends up down there. some of them have been found innocent posthumously but its fine lol. better safe than sorry !
anyway he basically does this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
castle town prison he hasn't really been to its never been something he's ever been assigned to as its more for. Not Royal Guards. but again it hasn't stayed very full recently due to the high demand for cheap labor excavating. things. stuff. yeah its not all sheikah they have prisoners do it occasionally. another one of king rhoam's excellent and pragmatic decisions ! //stares at the camera. gaffen being the freak that he is thinks this is incredible and amazing and great
uhh well. zelda knows about all this but honestly? to her it's all fine. mostly. she demanded a posthumous pardon for multiple people, but she's completely fine with unpaid prison labor. thats great i mean who wants to rot in a cell when you can die in a rockslide
as for rauru settlement? gaffen isn't even aware it was his old home at the moment. zelda probably ends up telling him as it's one of the few pieces of personal information she managed to wring out of him before he died. doesn't know his birthday though. post calamity gaffen is birthdayless and just celebrates his resurrection date. but honestly i think he's just in shock when he hears it. hylia held information about his past over his head for years and would get pissed if he asked for more so zelda giving it so willingly would definitely make him trust her. but i think they go there together and she tries to tell him what she knows. he sort of mourns over it silently. sits in the abandoned houses drops a rock down the well for fun wonders if he used to do that. they might end up meeting his great great grand-nephew there 👍
uhh pre calamity he used to think of it fondly but then just kind of. doesn't have an opinion of it anymore. can't really be bothered to have one. he can't really relate to his old friends after a certain point

By far the biggest flaw in BOTW's storytelling is its distribution of information. Its poor utilization of the flashbacks single-handedly turns a story that easily could've been great into one that's barely mediocre.
When creating a story, you need to decide 1) what information you want to put in it, and 2) where you want to put that information. Your choices can make or break your story on a fundamental level. Example one: if your story hinges on deconstructing a complex magic system, but then fails to explain this magic system to the audience, your story will completely fall apart. Example two: if you decide to open your story with a plot twist that'll be revealed halfway through, and then still try to pretend like the audience doesn't know what'll happen, your story will be very poorly received by an annoyed audience. However, if you reveal this twist and then utilize it as a sword of Damocles hanging over the characters' heads as they inch ever closer to it, it can create a unique tension. Which information you reveal and how you reveal it is a foundational aspect of storytelling.
BOTW, being an open world video game, can't really create a traditional linear story structure. Its information distribution is different than that of a movie, book, or even linear video game. BOTW has five avenues to distribute information: 1) main story cutscenes, 2) flashbacks, 3) NPC dialogue, 4) environmental storytelling, and 5) infodumps scattered throughout the world.
The first three speak for themselves, I don't feel like I have to explain them. With 'infodumps scattered around the world' I mean things like the Zora plaques and the diaries you can find; things you have to stop and read out in the world. I define 'environmental storytelling' primarily as location design; for example, the Guardian graveyard around Fort Hateno speaks to a fierce battle that then suddenly ended as Guardians failed to advance, information you can gather just from looking at it well before anyone tells you this. I distinguish this from NPC dialogue and infodumps because it's a completely wordless method of distributing information that essentially every person who plays the game will pick up on, regardless of whether they go out of their way to gather it or not.
Between these methods of distribution, main story cutscenes and environmental storytelling are the most reliable ways to distribute information. Your average player can be expected to watch at least most of the main story cutscenes, and since BOTW is a game about exploring, nearly all players will be exposed to environmental storytelling. Flashbacks are semi-reliable, in that most players can be expected to get at least a few of them, though a lot will probably not go out of their way to gather all. Lore dumps in the form of NPC dialogue and books/plaques/magazines/etc. are the least reliable, as a good chunk of players is simply not going to care about the story enough to read and seek them out.
The main story cutscenes do a fine job at explaining the basic story to the player and providing a bit of pathos for the Champions, which is their main job. I don't have much to say about them. But the real story of Breath of the Wild isn't really about calming the Divine Beasts and defeating Calamity Ganon; it's about what happened a hundred years ago. The story in the present matters, but is only a small percentage of the real picture.
The story of a hundred years ago lies primarily in the flashbacks, of which there are eightteen. Information is also distributed through certain diaries (most notably Rhoam and Zelda's), environmental storytelling, and NPC dialogue (mainly through Impa and some Zora NPCs). It is significantly more difficult to tell the story of the past than of the present, both because it's a lot more complex, and because there are fewer avenues to do so. As such, you need to be especially careful chosing what information you give where; flashbacks are the most complete way to distribute information, but environmental storytelling is the most universal. What information do you want most players to know, and what information is only really relevant to those already interested in the story? How do you maximize the information players receive?
This is where Breath of the Wild's story ultimately falls apart. It does a tremendously poor job recognizing what parts of the story are complex and important enough to be put in the flashbacks, and which information should instead be given through books and dialogue. It does not utilize the environmental storytelling to its full potential, either, though I won't be getting too much into that because it's the least egregious issue and this is already gonna be like a ten page essay. Instead, I'll focus on the flashbacks and, to a lesser extent, the books and dialogue.
First, to successfully write a story like this, you have to identify what information to put in the flashbacks, and what information you can give via environmental storytelling, books, or dialogue. Impa is capable of telling you about basic plot information from a hundred years ago, the Zora NPCs cover Mipha and some of Link's personal life, and the books give a more direct insight into Zelda and Rhoam's thoughts. However, these extra diaries will only be read by players already interested in the lore, so they should contain information that adds to what has already been established in the flashbacks; load-bearing information that the player needs to know should be present instead in the flashbacks and, where possible, environmental storytelling.
The flashbacks are structured as eighteen different scenes that should be able to stand alone, because they might be viewed in any order. Most of the scenes are dedicated to Zelda, which is a decent choice; you will gain information on the Champions through dialogue and the main story cutscenes, so they are less of a priority. It is harder to gather much meaningful information about Zelda through those, so prioritizing her in the flashbacks is a natural choice. That said, the few flashbacks we have of the Champions should absolutely provide information that couldn't have been gained from present day dialogue/cutscenes, especially seeing as there's only one for each. Likewise, information about Zelda already given via the flashbacks does not need to be repeated in books, since players who sit down to read those can be reasonably presumed to have either gathered all flashbacks already or be interested in doing so.
So, to summarize: the job of the flashbacks is to contain important information the player couldn't gather via dialogue or other present day infodumps. Things like characterization of Zelda, private scenes between Zelda and Link, and characterization details for the Champions should be prioritized here.
Important also: there are eighteen scenes. There is a hard limit on what information you can put in the flashbacks. When you have this few scenes to tell a story, you need to be ruthless in your prioritization of information. You need to put the most interesting, most important, most complex information in the flashbacks, and spread the rest through books and dialogue.
So. Why is there a flashback dedicated to showing monsters are acting up in the lead-up to Calamity Ganon's return? Like. That could've been an email, or, you know a diary entry. The only other thing the Eldin flashback provides is the knowledge that Zelda and Link are friends, that Zelda cares for Link, and that Link can be reckless when fighting. The first two are things we can see just as if not more clearly in other flashbacks, and the last is something that easily could've been put in the diary entry. Furthermore, 'monsters are acting up in the lead-up to Calamity Ganon's return' is information we could (and probably did) easily gather ourselves from seeing how the monsters are acting in the present day, with NPC dialogue informing us they are unusually active and Calamity Ganon having a clear direct effect on them via the Blood Moon. This information would've been nice flavoring in a diary entry; as a memory slot, it's wasting precious time and actively undercuts the story by doing so. This memory slot could've been used to show important information; instead, it's a complete waste of time.
This is just one example; Breath of the Wild is littered with memories that do little more than either repeat information established elsewhere or outright waste time, at best giving us irrelevant information, and at worst giving us nothing at all. Particularly egregious examples are the Mipha flashback, which does not provide us with any new information about her aside from maybe her healing, which is information that should've absolutely been previously established via dialogue instead and is established via other means elsewhere; the Kara Kara Bazaar flashback, which gives so little information as to be near useless (especially when this information is then later repeated in Zelda's diary for some reason) yet is still placed in such a way as to be basically unmissable and covers a load-bearing point in the story; and the one where Zelda reads off a travel itinerary, talks about basic Divine Beast facts we already know, and cuts out right at the point where we start to get into anything actually interesting.
Not all flashbacks are bad; some are mediocre, and some are outright great. But far too many flashbacks waste time repeating information or giving far too little, which eats away at the precious few scenes BOTW has to tell its story. I would consider the four scenes I just mentioned to be completely useless; memories tree and eight (travel itinerary and Eldin respectively) are useless to the point where you could outright cut them without missing anything real, and the other two are poorly written to the point where they are wasting space despite having an important part in the story.
However, I would only consider nine of the memories to be genuinely well-written, if I'm being generous (eight if I'm not, the swing vote being memory one). These are memories eleven through eighteen minus fourteen, multiple of which give important plot information that couldn't have been as effectively given in others ways, all of which provide characterization and/or additional context to plot events that couldn't have been given through other means. Also included is the frog memory, which contains no plot information, but shows what Zelda is like when she isn't stressed, an important part of characterization that, again, couldn't have been established nearly as effectively elsewhere. Memory one is very interesting in a lot of ways, but I feel like it's not as strong as the others and could've used a little more meat on its bones (for example: what does Mipha think of all this?). Ultimately, though, I do think it's interesting enough to be considered above average.
The rest of the memories are middling, basically passable to the point where I don't think the game would've necessarily been better off without them, but still ultimately not doing a great job telling the story. These are the memories that do give important information that couldn't be (effectively) given elsewhere, but that I don't feel utilize their time well. They are not very interesting and do not give enough information to justify their inclusion in the game as-is; they should've been rewritten to make better use of their time and provide more information. In a word: they're underwhelming. These are most of the Champion memories, where they simply give too little information about the Champions to be truly all that interesting to me; I feel like with some rewriting you could've made much better use of the one memory slot each Champion has. The last one in this category in memory fourteen, which does provide plot information and some characterization for Zelda and to a lesser extent Link, but ultimately feels more like a stopgap before the final act than anything else. Like, it's fine. I feel like you could've come up with a more interesting scenario with which to convey this information though. Which is basically my opinion on all these memories: they're fine, but could've used another pass.
(Memory five is one I'm not confident in placing; it does provide quite a bit of important information but I don't think it does so in a particularly interesting way; at the same time, I also don't think it's so weak that it strictly needed to be rewritten. So. Probably middling but in a less negative way than the others.)
We can twist and argue on the exact specifics on which memory should be included where, but I think that even with the most generous interpretation, it's difficult to argue against the estimation that there that about 25% to 50% of the memories included in Breath of the Wild do not do a good job telling their story. Seeing as the memories are the primary mechanism by which the story is told, that's. Bad. If 25% to 50% of your scenes are either bad or underwhelming, you don't have a very good story.
The issues don't stop at the memories. They also pop up in Zelda's diary, one of the other most important methods of information distribution. The third entry is about memory five and does not give meaningful insight on it, since memory five was already in Zelda's point of view and it was very easy to follow her thought process. The only new information is that she feels guilty about it. This is a waste of a dairy entry; we've already received most of this information, and the rest is not interesting enough to be worth its inclusion. Entry four is about the Kara Kara Bazaar flashback (or, you know, it would be if the flashback scene wasn't so weak), and similarly wastes an entry in its inclusion, since you're all but guaranteed to have gotten this memory by the time you read the diary and it doesn't really give much meaningful insight into Zelda's thought process (I mean. Still more than the actual memory. But come on now). Both of these are important for a narrative flow to the diary, I guess, but could've easily been incorporated into other entries with a sentence or two.
For example, while entry six also retells a memory, it does so in a few sentences, and spends the rest of its time providing insight into Zelda's thoughts on her mother and how those intertwine with her thoughts around her power and her failure to connect with it. This is a much more effective usage of the diary, providing extra information that's not essential to the story, but interesting to know for people who care. People who are sitting down to read the diary are people who care about the story; they'll have almost certainly either gotten the memories at this point, or be planning on getting them. You don't need whole entries dedicated to retelling the memories. They'll find them eventually, if they haven't yet. Instead, use the time more wisely by providing this extra flavor that deepens the story as a whole, rather than laying its basic foundations. That's the memories' job.
The other entries mostly do a pretty good job; the diary isn't the main issue with the story. However, there is one other entry that stands out to me: entry five, which describes Zelda and Link's first real bonding conversation. This is where the story gets kind of kneecapped by the game's insistence on keeping Link as a blank slate first and a character second. The writing correctly identified anyone who'd sit down to read Zelda's diary as someone who would like or at least wouldn't mind deeper Link characterization, but didn't want to risk alienating any players by putting more than vague hints towards characterization in the main memories. Link's lack of characterization is a separate issue from information distribution that only really hurts the story on two occasions (this one and the itinerary memory); I won't be getting into it here (again. the post is long enough), but I'm noting it because the information in this entry is far better suited to a memory. This is an important turning point in Link and Zelda's relationship, a foundational aspect of the story, not merely flavor text. The Kara Kara Bazaar memory, in part due to how bare bones it is, does not do a good job bearing the weight of this turning point. If you just watch the memories, the transition between Zelda disliking Link and them becoming good friends feels very sudden. The scene the entry describes is full of extremely interesting information that would make for a good flashback scene; however, most of it is about Link, and it would require giving him stronger characterization than the game was willing to commit to. Entry five is a good example of flavor text that should've, by all rights, been in the main story; however, its exclusion was deliberate. In my opinion, it still counts as an information distribution issue, but it isn't purely one.
So we have memories that should've been diary entries, diary entries that should've been memories, diary entries that should've been rewritten, memories that should've been rewritten because they provide so little information as to be either outright worthless or underwhelming, and memories that could've just been straight-out cut.
And here's the reason all of this matters: these things take up time. They take up valuable space in the narrative that could've been spent on things that were far more interesting. The foundation of Breath of the Wild's story, that of Zelda conflicting with her destiny and of a people doomed to tragedy due to a blind reliance on the past, is very strong. But in practice, it doesn't end up doing much of anything interesting with it.
Its characterization of the Champions is bare bones, with not enough information provided in the world to make up for the mediocre memories. Zelda's characterization is deeper and more interesting, but a lot of time that could've been spent flashing it out further instead goes to wasting time or repeating information established elsewhere. It never goes further than base elements you'd logically expect from this type of story set-up, and I don't believe that's because there wasn't anything interesting to do; look at the diary entry talking about Zelda's strange dream about a glowing woman. Is it Hylia? Is it Zelda having a prophetic dream about her own future? Is it something else? This is something you could easily mine and do something very interesting with. The summary describes memory three (the itinerary one) as Zelda 'interrogating Link, after which the pain she's held inside surfaces' (paraphrasing, I play the game in Dutch and am translating), which is wildly overstating what actually happens because the memory cuts off before it can do anything interesting. Part of that is the previously stated desire to keep Link a blank slate, but if that's what you want to do, why structure a precious memory slot around a scene you know is doomed to go nowhere? If you used this slot to actually have Zelda talk about how Hyrule views the Master Sword and what her own relationship is to it, you'd actually have an interesting memory and a more developed world and character to boot; perhaps you could even foreshadow the part in memory seventeen where Zelda knows Link's alive because the Master Sword still glows. Do you see what I mean? Time that's now wasted could've been used to provide much more interesting information that would deepen the story as a whole.
The fact is that Breath of the Wild spends too much time on far too little. It did a poor job understanding what information should go where, prioritizing unimportant, underwhelming, or repeating information for memory slots when they already had so few of them. The result is a story that is infuriatingly mediocre despite its potential.

Ah yes the combine thing to weapon mechanic, I foresee many shenanigans in our future. Now where can I find a steak?
They brought back keys?!! This should not make me this giddy, but nostalgia is a go.
Combining things to arrows is oddly satisfying. Now we’ll just have to wait to see if my desire to fuck around and find out outweighs my anxiety about using up resources I might need later. Because this is fun, but also must. Hoard. All the things.
First death of the game, lesson to self don’t try to take on the heavy hitters head on when at puny health. Hubris thy name was Link.
A shirt a shirt Zelda’s kingdom for a… okay maybe not that.
I do really like the news shrines design. They are similar enough to feel like they belong in the same world as the previous game’s shrines, but also look just new enough to stand apart. And I really like the way it opens up and closes the spore granting statue. Although I’m less clear on who is actually doing the dispensing here.
Our new ghost buddy really does love to follow us around, doesn’t he? Did he and Rhoam swap notes by any chance? “Ah yes, pop up right when they have their back turned for extra effect. See if you can make Link do an actual facial expression for once.” “Ohohoho good one. Shall I wax poetically about days gone by as well?” “Yes, by all means. The more vague and cryptic but laden with barely hidden sorrow the better.”
Urge to jump off high point. Must. Suppress.
*Sees something hanging from the ceiling* That does not look friendly. Spoilers: it wasn’t.
And still no shirt. You know, I’m starting to think this wasn’t just to show off the arm, dear devs.

Verry random headcanons/ shit from my au
And i mean verry random cuz i don’t wanna go into detail just Yet.
Most of them are about Astor, Kohga and Sooga.
Also i do wanna explain the ones about Zelda’s mom in a series of drawings, since thats a part of my au i really like, so thats gonna take a while.
Zelda’s mom only married Rhoam for the crown. She was seeing Urbosa behind the scenes. Urbosa and Zelda are the only people she cared about.
Zelda’s mom wasn’t actually the kind woman she pretended to be and shes the reason some staff “mysteriously disappeared” (this one is for another time babes)
Sooga is good at origami. Kohga picks different hobbies over the years but one he really likes is clay sculpting.
Kohga’s mother treated the clan horribly and thats part of the reason Kohga lets the clan have more freedom (another thing to go over later)
Zelda and Mipha did hear Link talk, but so did Daruk. Link would see Daruk like a grandpa and would hang out with him often, later on even vent to him
The harbinger is still a Terrako, so it would play a song when fights between Astor and Kohga got heated. Often times the song would become glitchy from Ganon wanting to take control back.
After her mom’s death, little kid Zelda would bother Astor. He didn’t like it at all. Despite that, he would sometimes let her stay in his room if she wanted a break from studying (something Rhoam didn’t give too often) IF she did not touch his stuff
A poor yiga found Astor’s journal, wich did show his descend into madness. That poor yiga also got caught reading it..
Sooga’s cooking is pretty good, but he Ofc isn’t one of the yiga chefs so if he does cook its mostly for him and/or Kohga. Kohga’s cooking is decent but he likes to cook with Sooga.
Don’t let Astor in the kitchen he can’t cook to save a life, he lives on coffee and an apple
Astor was born on a blood moon. He is also half zonai. Two things his parents found out from his birthmarks (yet another thing to explain ). He is adopted

In the name of the Goddess Hylia, I offer this.
Part 39 of Link's Thought Brambles
You have to get this just right today, Link.
“We’ll get the crown set just right, Princess.”
Too much sideburn? You look like a girl.
“Last time, it pulled and broke some hair.”
Too little sideburn? You again look like a girl.
“It’s of little importance, Ria.”
It has to be perfect.
“Broken hairs become flyaway. Better to avoid it.”
Pretty much every possible hairstyle highlights my delicate cheekbones.
“There… is that comfortable, Princess?”
Ugh.
“Yes, thank you, Ria. I appreciate your help.”
Everyone’s pointless man-face expectations…
“…You’re welcome, Princess.”
Almost done.
“Perhaps we’ll see Myrri next time?”
You have it, right, Link?
“It may be, Princess. I haven’t told her yet. I rather thought today, it was important to get an early start.”
I think I have it. It’s a good blessing. Sort of.
“Of course. Thank you again.”
It’s not like I have to say it exactly. The meaning’s what matters.
“Hahh. Well, Zelda. Nothing for it. Do NOT look at the slate.”
I’m probably a little less likely to stutter if I don’t try to memorize exact words. I think.
“Do not look. Later. Much later. Satchel for now.”
Do NOT screw up that one line. That one has to be perfect.
“I truly ought to tell him. I ought to.”
The light of dawn that shatters the twilight.
“Not now, though. Satchel. Door.”
NOT the dight of lawn that tatters the shylight. That would be stupid. And confusing.
“Princess.” “Good morning, Princess.” “Why, Princess, you look lovely!” “Wow! Your sleeves are so long!”
And is exactly what you’ll say if you let your mind wander.
“O-oh hehehee. Indeed, Chee. These sleeves are quite impractical. Not at all my usual choice of dress. Sir Oron. Sir Wenn. Junilla. I take it Link is preparing?”
No wandering, Link.
“Yes, Princess.”
…My boots are scuffed.
“He takes FOR. EH. VER making his hair all pretty.”
Why didn’t I think of boots?
“Hmhmhmm. I’ll be sure to examine it thoroughly when he emerges.”
Too late, now. It’s not like I have another pair.
“If you look really carefully, you’ll see all the lines by his ears where he’s tried different places to pull it back.”
Scuffed boots, wonky seam. Because it’s still the best one I’ve got.
“Enough, Chee. Don’t make fun of your brother. Especially as these two gentlemen report to him.”
Oh well. No reason to hang around in here anymore.
“Don’t worry, ma’am. He has our respect.”
Better go.
“And… we’d already noticed the hair.”
“HA! See, mom?”
Lots of giggling out here. Uh. Including Oron.
“Oh! Oh, look at you, Link. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so handsome!”
Mom… come on, Wenn is RIGHT THERE. I really can’t afford to look like mom’s little boy in front of him, even though I am still mom’s little boy and still will be if I live to be a hundred and eight-
“Oh dear. I’ve embarrassed you.”
Don’t look at Wenn. Don’t look. “No, no, I’m good, mom. Thanks.”
Oh s@#$, why did I look at Oron- Oron, keep it together man, if you bust out, that’s it and wow… Zelda…she’s-
“You actually look pretty nice, Link!”
“…Thaaaaanks, Chee.”
“What?! You do!”
“Heh, it’s not that, Chee.”
“What is it, then?!”
“Ehhehe. I believe, Chee, your brother was expressing resignation at the surprise in your tone.”
What’s the matter with you, Link? You’ve seen her in her most formal of formal gowns before. It’s the same one. Why did it stop your heart this time?
“Well, Sir Link. We’re prepared quite early.”
“We could head that way now if you like, Princess, so we don’t have to fight our way through throngs of people to the sanctum. We can pick up Mipha on the way if she’s ready.”
“Yes, that’s likely wise. Junilla, are you- Oh!”
Wh- what’s the king doing here?! Oh Goddess. Goddess, did I do something else wrong? Holy s@#( did someone tell on us?!
…He… doesn’t look angry…
“…Junilla, Laichee, may I introduce my father, King Rhoam! Father, these are-“
“Yes, my dear, I was made aware a short while ago.”
He- he’s SMILING.
“Madam Junilla.”
He took mom’s HAND?!
“May I express how glad I am to finally meet you?”
Oooooh, she’s thunderstruck.
...This is the first time I’ve EVER seen my mother confused by a person’s behavior.
“I- I am honored, Sire.”
“Ah. And this must be your daughter, judging by the similarity between you.”
“Yes. Yes, Sire, this is my daughter Laichee.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Laichee.”
“Um. Hi! Everyone calls me Chee, though.”
Sire. Sire, Chee. CHEE- “Sire, sire-“
“Oh yeah, Sire! Sorry.”
“Hehe. Had I realized you were here last night, I’d have made sure your accommodations were more appropriate. As it stands, I’d hoped to catch you in time to invite you to the ceremony in the Sanctum.”
…Woah.
Really?
“Sire… I’m honored once more. I’m afraid we’re unprepared for a formal affair. We traveled here when news of my son’s injury reached us and brought simple traveling clothes only. We must decline out of politeness.”
“I thought that might be an issue, which is why I shall deliver you directly to my head seamstress’ office should you agree. She’s always prepared for such an eventuality.”
“Oh! Why then... Chee, would you like to go?”
“Of COURSE, I would!”
“I believe we’ll accept, then. I deeply appreciate this, Sire!”
“The pleasure is mine. Well—my guard and I will deliver you, then, and we’ll see YOU two at the Sanctum.”
“Yes, father.” “Yes, Sire.” He… wouldn’t look at me directly…
Where in all the surface’s green fields did that come from?
Did father tell stories about them, maybe?
He’s probably more proud of them than he is of me. Or… well, just not ashamed, maybe. “I… wasn’t expecting that.”
“Nor was I, but I’m glad my father considers them such important guests!”
“I wonder if it’s because of me, or my father.”
“It could easily be both. The wives of the regional commanders were invited, after all.”
“…But not their mothers.”
“Ohf- oh, no. Then again, they aren’t the ones being blessed.”
“OR doing the blessing.”
“And… you don’t have a wife.”
“…No. No, I don’t.” Not yet.
That’s what I want to say. Not yet.
Shouldn’t. Certainly not here.
And it would be extremely arrogant of me. After all, she’s only kissed me three times. That’s not an engagement. It might not even be love.
It’s love for me.
But I won’t hold her to that. I’m hers whether she loves me or not.
For now, I’m overjoyed she likes to stick her tongue in my mouth. I’ll take that.
Aaaaand we’ve been silently staring into each other’s eyes for WAY too long right in front of Oron and Wenn. “Right, well… shall we, Princess?”
“We shall, Sir Knight.”
Oooh. That was Sir Knight voice.
…This is going to be a fantastic day, isn’t it?
_____
She’s not nervous this time. Not at all. Is she?
At the Champion’s ceremony, her back straight and stiff as an iron rod. Hands in fists half the time. Opening and closing. Her breaths short. Tense.
Not today. Today, she flows. Graceful. A smile on her lips and hope in every contour of her face.
I love seeing her like this.
I love seeing her face her FATHER like this.
Heh. And I love seeing glower-priestess look so lost.
Too bad I didn’t explain that situation to Mipha. I’d’ve tried to make a bet with her on it. I think the priestess will be all business today, get her lines out of the way, and hurry out of here as fast as possible when it’s over.
Buuuuut there’s a chance she might also stick around for way way way too much champagne instead. Assuming that’s what they’ll do, just like the last ceremony.
Mipha’s looking serene as usual.
Aaaaand my mom and sister just can’t stop beaming at me. Ugh, Chee. Chee, I can’t wave back at you, not right now. Eye-communicate, Link!
Jirolie did a nice job again. I don’t know how or why she had it, but the white with champion blue highlights looks really nice on both of them.
My sister will, of course, completely ruin it if she wears it all day. Because it’s white. Heh. Look at her squeezing the strap of the Princess’ satchel like someone might try and take it from her. She volunteered for that job real quick.
Oh- he’s raising his hands. It’s time.
“Princess Zelda, my beloved daughter. We have returned to this place today to honor and sanctify you in the name of the Goddess Hylia, and to recognize your unique power and command over those who fight for Hyrule, including its champions.
In light of your extraordinary strength and skill, and recognizing your startling intellect, I hereby name you Marshal of the Hyrulian Army. Your word on the battlefield is law.”
It… already was, but okay. I get it…
“I know you will bear this responsibility with the good of Hyrule’s people ever foremost in your heart. In a moment, we shall commence with the blessing. But first—Sir Link, please stand at my daughter’s side.”
?!?!
What?
…Move, feet.
Does she know what…?
“Princess Zelda is not the only Hylian to have demonstrated extraordinary skill, strength, and intelligence in recent days. It is apparent, Sir Link, that your abilities and my daughter’s are two sides of the same magic. You, neither of you, should be beholden to anyone except Hyrule itself, as a land and as a people. I hereby grant you, Sir Link, the rank of General-“
HOLY S&#$ AND THAT’S A HUGE UPROAR!!!! Are those HAPPY noises? Or are they all unbelievably pissed off?!?!?!
The Princess’ arm twitched. She’s surprised, too.
He’s waiting… his hands out again…
“Sir Link. Your command will be second only to my daughter’s and my own.”
This… has to be a mistake.
“You are to report directly to her and continue to perform your duty as her appointed knight and commander of the Princess’ personal guard. You, together, are fated to be Hyrule’s first line of defense against the Calamity, and it’s clear you were both born to it. Let no man—or woman—stand in your way.”
I can barely command my own mouth. A general leads armies… I’ve commanded a grand total of 10 people. Unless you count festival prep…
“And now, I call upon Priestess Merisse.”
Um. UM. …Am I supposed to move out of the way? She’s blessing the Princess, right? Not me?
…I’ll just… step to the side. Not all the way back, but not right in the circle there.
Look calm, Link. Not like you crapped your pants. Which you very nearly did. There’s some churning going on. Not good on a day when you were really hoping not to use the facilities.
“In the name of Goddess Hylia, I offer this prayer.”
She almost sounds sincere for once. It might just be confusion.
“Princess Zelda, wielder of Hylia’s holy light, I bless thee in her name.”
That’s... formal.
“May she accept thy weaknesses, leaving strength in their place.
“May she accept thy misunderstandings, illuminating thy path to knowledge.
“May she accept thy fears and lead thee to them that thee may find courage.
“May thee be as her hands, thoughts, and heart.
“May thee comprehend and work her will for the greatest good.
“May thee reflect her light, that others may also see,
“For the light must never be for one alone.
“In the name of Goddess Hylia, I bless thee.”
.
.
Yeah, she wanted that done quick.
It.. it’s time, isn’t it?
There she is. Smiling at me.
Guess I’m just drawn to her now, because here I am in the circle. Kneeling at her feet.
Make this the deepest genuflect you’ve ever done, Link. You mean this one. Not that you didn’t mean the one at the ceremonial ground, but this one means more, so much more-
…I was in love with her then, too. I guess I must be even more in love today.
“Hero of Hyrule, chosen by the Sword that Seals the Darkness… You have shown unflinching bravery and skill in the face of darkness and adversity-”
Not darkness. Not while awake, anyway. Adversity? Guess so.
Garai. Vayden. Kertiss. Virn.
“-and have proven yourself worthy of the blessings of the Goddess Hylia.”
…Some people seem to think so.
“Whether skyward bound, adrift in time, or steeped in the glowing embers of twilight, the sacred blade is forever bound to the soul of the Hero.”
Forever… forever bound… no, Link. They’re just words. I’m just me.
“We pray for your protection, and we hope that the two of you will grow stronger together, as one.”
…I should probably try to make light come out of THIS sword.
“Forged in the long-distant past, The Sword that Seals the Darkness, guardian of Hyrule, ancient steel, forever bound to the hero.”
Heh. She’s talking to the sword. Wonder if it will ever talk back?
“In the name of the Goddess Hylia, I bless you and your chosen hero. Over the seas of time and distance, when we need the golden power of the Goddess, our hope rests in you, to be forever by the Hero’s side. Again, we pray, that the two of you will be stronger, together, as one.”
I’m stronger now, Princess. I am. But it’s not because of the sword. It's you.
It is so, so quiet in here. It’s like no one’s breathing.
“Sir Link?”
Why’s she whispering?
“You may rise, now.”
Ah. No. No, I’m right where I need to be.
Turn your face up, Link. Toward your Princess. Meet her eyes and smile.
“This is exactly where I should be, Princess.”
“Hph. Usually, the one kneeling is the one being blessed.”
“This'll be a little different.”
“Hmm. Very well, Sir Knight.”
Alright, Link.
This is it.
Hopefully I can project without actually shouting like I was doing to Nedley all yesterday.
And… hopefully they won’t be able to hear me tremble. The near ones probably can see it.
“Princess…
“The Goddess incarnate… you are the light of dawn that shatters the twilight.
“No blessing I can bestow could make you greater.
“You are already the light that shines on this world.
“YOU illuminate my path.
“You already have my blessing, and you have since the moment we met.
“We were already bound by magic and by fate. Then we were bound by the sword.
“So… today, what I offer isn’t a blessing, exactly… because my- blessing- wouldn’t be anything new.
“…Instead, I offer a gift.
“The one thing I haven’t freely given, Princess--my courage to speak.
“You had my faith. My belief that you will light the way even if I falter.
“You had my loyalty. My pledge to follow wherever you lead. To serve you in all things.
“You had my protection. My sword is your instrument. I wield it for you.
“And now, you have my voice.
“That you may know my thoughts.
“And that you may speak through me.
“In the name of the Goddess Hylia, I offer this to you… and you alone.”
…What is it with me and the shaking lately? I’m this broiling hot mess of nerves. I didn’t even screw it up. It went pretty well!
…It…did sound a bit like ‘I love you’ though, didn’t it?
Oooh. Ooooh, Link. Maybe you did screw up because those are tears in her eyes, aren’t they?
…Someone in the crowd just sniffled.
…It was Chee, wasn’t it?
“R-rise, Sir Link. I… humbly accept your gift. Be assured I shall treasure it as my most valued possession.”
Rising. Shakily, but rising.
“I-it so happens I also have a gift for you.”
Really?
“Jirolie?”
What does she have to- oh! Ohh, that actually makes a lot of sense.
“Thank you.”
Heh. Is that TWO new tunics?
“Sir Link, I bestow upon you this sacred garb… again. This time… it was made with love.”
Oh my Goddess.
My Goddess, she means it.
She- she didn’t even say that quietly, did she?
W- what’s she doing?
Oh. Handing me shirts. Yeah, cool, that’s-
And now her hands are cupping my face.
…She’s closer.
…Doesn’t seem like she’s aiming for my mouth-
My forehead.
A sound just swept through the crowd.
Her lips. Closed… but lingering.
Careful, Link.
Easier… a little easier with your eyes shut.
The others… it doesn’t sound the way I thought it would.
Not a shocked murmur.
What was it?
And does it really matter when your Princess loves you back?
THAT was the king’s voice- chuckling?
When did he get so close?!
“It so happens, daughter, that I also have a gift to give. Officially, anyway. I must admit, I am no tailor. Jirolie made this for you.”
Is that another Champion’s tunic?
Oh. No, it’s the royal blue. With lines near the edges like mine, but in gold. And the symbol- a lot like the banners. The royal crest reworked into a bow, arrow pointed down. The triangles on the sleeves, not above the bow. The champion white and blue as accent lines.
Wooow. She is going to be the snazziest of us.
“It- it’s remarkable. Thank you, father. Thank you, Jirolie.”
“You are always welcome, Your Highness.”
“Indeed, Zelda. Ahh. I am proud of you, my dear. Well, all. Now the ceremony is concluded, I hope you’ll join us for light refreshments in the high grounds on this glorious morning. Afterward, feel free to join the festivities in the lower bailey. The ballroom will open at four o’clock.”
What’s-“OOF!”
“LINK! When did you start writing poetry?”
“Uh. I didn’t?” Turning red, turning very very red-
“Yes, you did. That was a poem, or I’ll eat… THAT lady’s fluffy hat.”
Damn, that IS a fluffy- Link! Pay attention! “It didn’t rhyme.”
“Poems don’t have to rhyme.”
“They should.”
“I’m afraid I quite agree with your young sister, Sir Link. That was, indeed, poetry.”
Are his eyes sparkling?
Mom’s smiling at me.
The Princess is smiling at me.
Jirolie, too.
Um. Everyone’s… looking at me…
“Well. Might I beg a few moments to speak with Sir Link alone?”
“Of course, sire!” “Aww.” “Yes, father.”
“Excellent.”
Oh. Ohh, Link. Which of the many things that just happened could it be?
Could he tell I was basically swooning over the Princess?
Is he upset about the made-with-love-thing?
Is he going to tell me he made a big mistake promoting me a zillion ranks in a single day?
“Ahh. That’s far enough, I think. Well, lad. How are you feeling?”
“H- how am I… feeling?”
“Mm.”
“Um. Fine, sire.”
“Truly? Discounting that brief moment this morning, when last I saw you, you appeared most unwell.”
Well… yeah. I thought you might execute me.
Chee crying in bed.
“And… that was my doing. I am sorry for that.”
He’s SORRY? The king is sorry? But he was- “right. You were right. I… completely deserved what you said.”
“…That doesn’t mean it isn’t bothering you.”
Why is he like this? One day he’s way nicer than I expect… then frankly terrifying to the very core of my being… now nice again.
“You’re so… so young, lad. I’m aware of that. And you’re under a great deal more pressure than I was when I was in your position.”
“I’m… fine, sire. Really.” Wait… when the king was in my position? He was never the captain of the princess’ guard. He was never the bearer of the sword, either, obviously, and THAT’s a shoulder-clap-
“Fine and well are not the same thing. …I regret how I spoke to you- in the yard. I should be… I should conduct myself as your teacher. Not your judge.”
Link, what is it with you? Stop. Get a hold of yourself. Swallow it. You've done this way too much lately.
“Upon… some self-reflection, it is clear the pressure of all this has affected my own actions, just as it has the rest of the inhabitants of this castle.”
Link. Link. Do not let any of these fall. My Goddess. You’re somewhere else. You’re somewhere else oh no. Major fail. Major fail, Link. Stick a hand over your eyes and try to save whatever dignity you have left.
Typical you, Link. The king himself apologizes to you. Then you screw it up by losing it. Where is your knight face?
It’s because of all the emotion with the ceremony, isn’t it? Just too many things to hold in at once.
“Lad. Lad, feel no shame.”
The king himself is squeezing my shoulder.
“You and my daughter carry the greatest burdens in this kingdom. Mine is little to bear by comparison. Not a single person in this world should hold your heart against you.”
But they would. They definitely would.
“I shouldn't be like this, sire.”
“What makes you say that?”
“…This… is not how a knight of Hyrule is supposed to act. And it’s definitely not how the Legendary Hero is supposed to be. Or a general, for that matter.”
“So… what should he be, then? Unfeeling? Unmovable? Cruel?”
“No, no, of course not… not cruel or unfeeling… but not weak…”
“…You are not made of stone, lad. It’s what makes you a good man. It’s what makes you fight to the last. It’s what assures you’ll fight the Calamity when it comes. An unfeeling man… well. One look at the monstrosity, and he has no reason to risk himself for its defeat. He runs. But you… you, Link. You’ll see the faces of everyone you care for, and you’ll have no choice but to fight.”
“I- I’d have run to save her.”
“Hmm. Yes. I can understand that. I’d have run anywhere, had it meant saving my beloved wife.”
Oh. Oh s@#*, Link. That is a knowing look. You know it because your mom does it.
And… of course it is, Link. You just gave the whole game away. ‘Her.’ You didn’t say it was the Princess. But it was only one ‘her’ it could possibly be.
“So, Sir Link. That brings me to your new rank. Be assured, I have no intention of placing you at the head of an army right now.”
Praise Hyila for that. I don’t even know where to begin.
“Rather, my intention, lad, is to give you your freedom.”
My…?
“Long have I thought on this matter of the melee. The brashness. The presumption. How to make it clear not only that I trust you with my daughter’s life, but that they had no right to do as they did? I finally decided the best I could do was remove anyone’s hold over you. You will have no more commanders, save the royal family itself. Should anyone—ANYONE—take issue with your conduct, they’ll have to complain either to myself or my daughter. It’s a shield for you, lad. And a statement to them. For it has been a great multitude of thousands of years since anyone dared restrict whom Hyrule’s Princesses should marry. I don’t intend to allow it to happen again.”
.
.
Shock. This is shock, isn’t it? I’m in shock.
“Hmph. I imagine you’ve been running yourself in circles thinking yourself trapped.”
This is definitely, absolutely, most assuredly shock.
“You may, of course, correct me if I’m wrong. But the looks you turned on each other when my daughter curiously peered into the training yard were unmistakable, even to those usually oblivious to such things. I began thinking on it that very afternoon. And of course, that led me to wonder if you’d be the one to pull the sword. Well. Here we are.”
“Th-THAT made you wonder?”
“It did.”
“Wh- why?”
“Ha! I study history, lad. Or what passes for it when the happenings are so ancient.”
“...Does this… usually happen?”
“From what I can tell? Not usually, lad. Always.”
Always.
Always?
Images in my dreams. Hard to remember. Sunshine on golden hair. Always that.
Is it possible? Is the blessing more true than I gave it credit for? The sword bound to my soul, forever?
And did I love her at first sight because I already did?
…Have I fought the Calamity before?
“I can see your thoughts have taken quite a turn.”
“…Yes, sire.”
“I also note you have, in fact, not corrected me.”
No. No, I haven’t.
My Goddess! He knew this whole time! “Sire?”
“Yes?”
“Why- if you thought- why didn’t you think what the rest of them did? That morning the Princess went belowground?”
“Ha! Because unlike some, I have a brain in my head. Skies above, lad, you spent a solid hour and a half or more running about the grounds in obvious barely-contained panic. The timing didn’t match a whit. But of course, people will make of things what they will, and they certainly MADE something of that. I knew my daughter resented the sword as well and had not gotten over it. I am pleased to see she finally has.”
.
“So. Unless you object, I believe it is time for a little food, a glass of champagne, and to join your family and friends in the sun. Fortunate we have that, today. In a week or so it’ll be cold even in its light, but for now it provides a balm against the chill in the air.”
“Yes, sire.”
He’s waiting for you. To walk at his side. Not behind him.
“Hmph. Come, Sir Link.”
Nod. Nod and walk, Link.
I’ve never tried champagne, but you know what? Today’s the day for it. Absolutely one-hundred-percent for sure. And if the Princess has a glass, I’m going to do the glass-clinking thing and gaze deeply into her eyes while doing it and try to silently communicate that I’m so, so, so going to find a way to be totally alone with her later. For a minimum of ten minutes.
Ten minutes, Link? That’s all? That sounds disappointing already.
Better make it two hours.
“Psst! Link!”
??- “Chee?!” You sneaky, sneaky kid! Banners are for decoration, not subterfuge! “What are you doing back there?”
Don’t look at the king. Don’t look. His footsteps sure stopped.
“I knew it! You’re smoochy smooching the Princess!”
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
“Heh. Heh heh. Ah ha HAA ha ha ha!”
Chee… you are so, so lucky he finds this funny…
“Well, child. Eavesdropping on royalty, eh? Come along. No reason to linger any longer.”
“Eeee hee heee. How many times?”
“What?!”
“How many times have you smooched?”
“Chee, for fu-! UH, Hylia’s sake…”
“OOH! I’m going to tell mom about your nasty latrine mouth.”
“Chee, please keep… at least a LITTLE bit of a lid on it, okay?”
“I know, Link, I’ve completely got this.”
Spirits preserve me…
“If anybody tries to beat you up again, THIS time you’ll have at least two girl-knights and me AND the Princess and we’ll take care of it for you.”
“Hmm. Sir Link, if anyone does try that again, we simply won’t allow it. The first one was a surprise. The tension demanded its resolution. That said, a more typical melee with each person fighting for their own standing? That may be a healthy outlet. …Ah.”
There they are.
They have extra champagne flutes.
Mom sees me. Huge grin on her face!
“Oh, Link-”
Aaah haha cheek kisses- tickly hair-
“I’m so proud of you. I know I keep repeating myself, but I can hardly help it.”
“Thanks, mom.”
“This is for you, Chee.”
“I can have champagne?!”
“On this extremely special occasion, yes, you may… a little. And this one’s for you, Link.”
“Oh, what about you?”
“Link… did you forget?”
“Huh? OH. Oh, right, you can’t. Aw.”
“I can have a sip of Chee’s.”
“Why mine?!”
“Because you shouldn’t drink that entire glass anyway.”
“Mmmph.”
“This one’s for you, father.”
“Thank you, Zelda.”
“Lady Mipha was going to lead us in a toast! Are you ready?”
“Oh yes, Princess, it’s not too complicated. Everyone- raise your glass! To the hero and the Princess! May they wear their new ranks as well as their new tunics!”
“PFF-“ “Oh, haha” “HA!” “That was pretty good, Mipha!” “Mmmwhuh…” “Hmhmm.”
Clinks all around! This… this is actually nice, isn’t it? It isn’t like after the Champions’ ceremony.
The Princess’ glass.
Okay, Link. You can do this.
Look so deep into her eyes you’re touching her soul.
There’s that amused half-smile she wore at the kitchen table.
Can I tell her with nothing but my eyes? That later, I’ll find a way to give her what I know she wants?
Ohh, Link. She’s better at it than you are. How did she do that? My eyes, my lips, my neck, my… and back to my eyes.
That’s a shiver.
Clink.
“I’ll raise my glass to that, Sir Link.”
“Me too, Princess.”

A father's duty
I can't believe my first work about my favorite videogame Breath of the Wild is about shitty dad but it is what it is.
Please enjoy.
You can read on AO3 here.
---------------------------------------------------
King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule didn’t die the day Calamity Ganon came to the kingdom.
He wasn’t even in the castle that day that, from the foundations of his home, the power of Ganon was unleashed that swept through his kingdom, killing everyone who was there almost instantly.
No, after having written a few pages in his journal, Rhoam is in the Temple of Time, praying for his daughter while she is doing the same on Mount Lanayru, trying to awaken the powers of the goddess that belong to her by blood right. Some people say that kings do not kneel before anyone, but that day Rhoam is on his knees in front of the giant statue of goddess Hylia, asking for the safe return of Zelda with results on her participation in stopping the Great Calamity.
Rhoam is in the middle of his prayers when the ground rumbles and the sky turns crimson. The screams of his subjects are only drowned out by the sounds of the laser beams and the mechanical legs of the guardians that Zelda had promised were to defend Hyrule. His worst nightmare has come true, the technology his daughter loves so much has turned against her.
The king doesn’t remember much of the next two days. The journey to Kakariko Village is more complicated than it usually is on ordinary days. Many royal guards and Sheikah warriors perish trying to defend him from monsters and guardians, and their twenty-man escort dwindles until only three arrive at the entrance of the village safeguarding the last king of Hyrule.
The next thing Rhoam does is wait.
Impa insists that he must sleep, he must eat, he must maintain his sanity in these difficult times for the kingdom, but Rhoam doesn’t have time to be king of a land that is doomed to an end. His daughter is missing, no one seems to have heard anything about the princess and the hero with the sword that seals the darkness. All that is heard are the rumors of the advance of the guardians towards Fort Hateno, the fall of Akkala Citadel and the defeat of the four Champions within their Divine Beasts.
The king feels that he’ill go insane at any moment, wandering the village from dawn to dusk, ordering the Sheikah warriors to leave Kakariko and search for his daughter and waiting for some news about her, but three days after the fall of Hyrule’s Castle Town, a new rumor reaches Kakariko Village. A brave swordsman has managed to contain the guardians at Fort Hateno on his own. Thanks to his efforts, the entire region is safe. Rhoam feels that a weight is released from his shoulders, if a young man managed to contain a horde of guardians, it means that his daughter and her appointed knight are safe and on their way.
Rhoam's heart nearly leapt out of his chest when he sees Zelda walk into Kakariko alone, shrouded in a faint golden light and with the Master Sword hanging from her back.
His instincts tell him to run to his daughter, wrap her in his strong arms, and thank the goddesses for protecting her. However, when he notices the solemn, ethereal look in her eyes, and the golden halo that surrounds her body, he realizes that whoever is in front of him seems to have lived more than ten thousand years and have seen the most horrible things. He reacts just in time to hold Zelda before she falls to the ground after passing out.
The princess sleeps three days in a row. During those three days, Rhoam is kneeling by her bed, holding her cold hand, praying to the goddesses for Zelda to wake up. He is not a person who shows his feelings or regrets his actions, but now all he wants is to see his daughter's bright warm green eyes and apologize for not being the father she needed, for not protecting her while she was helpless, and facing the wrath of Calamity Ganon. He promises himself that when she wakes up, he will make up for lost time, be a better father, and listen to his daughter, instead of imposing his will. That is if they manage to survive the end of the world.
It is Zelda's crying that wakes him up on the third night.
Rhoam is sitting on the floor of the room, his head on the bed where the princess rests, when the sound of her sobs startle him almost immediately. Zelda is sitting on the bed and her face is covered with her hands, but he can see the tears rolling down her cheeks and wrists.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Zelda says with a choked and raspy voice from lack of use. "I'm sorry I disappointed you."
Rhoam feels a lump form in his throat as he realizes the damage he has done to his daughter with his demands and negligence. He tries to get closer to hug her and she ends up flinching away, as if afraid that he is going to punish her for having failed to stop that cursed beast. He doesn’t remember the last time he held her in his arms and now he fears that it is too late to mend the damage between them.
"You haven't disappointed me, Zelda." Rhoam tells her calmly while holding her chin with two fingers, and makes her look him in the eye. "You are my pride. Forgive me, please."
When she throws herself into his arms, he realizes that it may not be too late to make amends for the damage.
Zelda and Rhoam stay up all night, talking about what happened the day Calamity Ganon came to Hyrule. She tells him about how Link defended her so bravely as they tried to escape the guardians and monsters, how they were cornered in Fort Hateno and Link fought until his last breath, how a guardian tried to annihilate her knight and she had to intervene, thus awakening the powers of the goddess within her. She also tells him about how the Master Sword helped her solve the next step to seal Ganon again.
"I have to return the Master Sword to the Great Deku Tree, and then return to the castle to hold back Ganon as Link recovers from his injuries in the Shrine of Resurrection." She explains to her father who, for the first time in seventeen years, is attentive to the words that come out of her mouth. "He will wake up confused, someone will have to explain what to do."
Rhoam knows what this means for their relationship as father and daughter. He is not sure how long Zelda will be alone, locked in that cursed castle, waiting for the Hero chosen by the goddess to awaken from his slumber. The king wants to protect his daughter, but he knows exactly what to do now. Once again, duty is more important than heart.
The next morning, after Zelda agreed with the Sheikah on actions to take once Link wakes up, father and daughter walk out of Kakariko Village with nothing but an ax as a weapon, despite Impa's insistence to leave with an escort to protect them. But Zelda and Rhoam don't need or want an escort for a one-way trip.
Along the way they face bokoblins and moblins who succumb to Rhoam's strong arm with the ax, and imposing guardians who fall undone as Zelda uses the power of the goddess that comes out of her hand. And although the journey is long and full of dangers due to the beast that lurks in the castle, Rhoam enjoys the company of his daughter.
During the trip he learns that his beloved princess has more than a hundred fun facts up her sleeve, all about plants and insects, and the healing properties of each of them; she tells him about her discoveries with Sheikah technology and how it could help Link as soon as he wakes up; she tells stories about her pilgrimage throughout the kingdom in her tireless search to awaken her power and the occasional funny story in which she subjected her appointed knight to be the guinea pig of her experiments. Every time Rhoam hears her voice, he realizes everything that he has lost from his daughter's life and won’t be able to come back to that time.
The weight of Zelda's decision is felt like a bucket of cold water on his back as they both arrive at the Shrine of Resurrection on the Great Plateau, where the hero recovers from his injuries. For Rhoam, Zelda's plan to face Ganon on her own begins to be real, during Hylia knows how long until Link is strong enough to fulfill his part of the prophecy. Zelda is sure of her role and Rhoam wonders if that determination was inherited from him or is it a characteristic of Hylia's descendants.
"Promise me you'll be there to help Link when he wakes up." Zelda asks with a broken voice and her eyes full of tears, but without allowing a single one of them to roll down her cheeks.
Rhoam, in an act of humility and devotion, drops to one knee before Zelda, bringing his right hand to his heart. "I swear by the goddesses who are above in the sky and by the land that I ruled that is at my feet, that I will keep my promise."
Zelda throws herself into her father's arms one last time and gives him one last kiss on the cheek before walking in the direction of the Lost Woods with the Master Sword on her back.
Rhoam watches her walk away and for a moment realizes his own hypocrisy. For years he has forced Zelda to fulfill her duty as the princess of Hyrule to end the Calamity, but now that she is going to face her fate, all he wants is to hold her in his arms and take her away, to a place where she can be happy, where she can research insects, plants and Sheikah technology, and not have to worry about a destiny that she didn’t choose. But he also knows that if he stops her, that if he gives in to his emotions, it is likely that it will spoil his daughter's progress. He cannot allow that.
The old man stays at the entrance of the Shrine of Resurrection for two days and nights, defending himself against monsters attracted by the power of malice that emanates from Hyrule Castle and that is permeating every corner of the kingdom. Rhoam doesn't let exhaustion get the better of him, a couple of days of fighting don't compare to the arduous task that Zelda will face, and that thought is what keeps him strong.
It is not until dawn on the third day that a blinding golden light covers the previously crimson sky and the monsters begin to retreat, frightened by the new atmosphere that engulfs the much-wounded kingdom of Hyrule. That morning, Rhoam falls to his knees once more and cries bitterly, cursing the goddesses for putting such a heavy burden on his little princess's shoulders. And he curses himself for having been part of that burden and not a support to her. Then he goes down the hill and in a gap that seems safe he finally rests.
Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and Rhoam re-learns the trades he learned as a young man, before becoming a knight of the kingdom and later the husband of the then-Princess of Hyrule. With his strong ax he cuts some trees behind the Temple of Time and builds a small cabin to shelter during the nights when the stalfos wander in search of new victims, with the bows and arrows recovered from the fallen knights he learns to hunt for food, and with the hides of the animals he hunts, he learns to make some clothes to be prepared against sudden changes in the weather and even builds a paraglider to easily explore the inhospitable land that surrounds him. However, he never strays beyond the Great Plateau, not because he is scared to see what his kingdom has become, but because he must be near the Shrine of Resurrection in case Link comes out of there at any time.
The months turn into years and nothing is left of that tough and moody king who spent his days sitting on his golden throne. Perhaps it is the contact with nature that little by little begins to mix with the ruins of his kingdom, but his character has softened. The old man lives his days always the same: guarding the Shrine of Resurrection, baking apples over the campfire, inventing new recipes and writing in his new journal about his new life as an old wanderer.
It is when twilight arrives that melancholy invades him. During the nights he is dedicated to praying for Zelda, for Link, for the souls of the subjects he couldn't protect and for the lives of those who managed to escape Ganon's wrath. He thinks of the times he let his pride and stubbornness win the battle against his love for his family. He thinks of the years he lived with his wife and daughter, and the times he will never be able to live. He thinks that he will never be able to take Zelda to the altar on her wedding day, nor will he ever see her become a mother for the first time. He won’t see the first steps of his grandchildren, nor will he advise his daughter to guide the kingdom as her mother would have wanted. But most of all, he is terrified to think that even if Zelda succeeds in her mission, she will find herself alone in a world that no longer remembers her.
Those worries haunt him until the day he dies.
Rhoam is hunting a wild boar to make dinner that night when a white bokoblin appears from behind the bushes and attacks him. He no longer has the same agility as before and although he manages to finish off the monster, it also manages to injure his left leg. The old man wraps his injured leg in an improvised bandage and continues with his day, but at night the fever caused by the infection in his leg makes him see visions about his wife wrapped in a halo of golden light, calling him to fly by her side.
The last king of Hyrule dies three days later, alone in his small cabin behind the Temple of Time, from infection in his wound, twenty years after the fall of the kingdom.
Any Hylian would think that Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule has earned his well-deserved rest, that after having a life full of worries and anxieties due to the imminent arrival of Calamity Ganon to the kingdom, he deserves to spend eternity resting in peace, free from the torment he left behind in his mortal life. But Rhoam is a stubborn and pig-headed man. He made a promise to his daughter and plans to keep it.
Despite being a devout and religious man, Rhoam had never stopped to think about what exists beyond death, so it is a surprise for him to realize that his determination has allowed him to break through the barriers of mortality and become an entity wandering the wild plains of Hyrule.
With death came some benefits for him. His new status allows him to stop worrying about the weather or hunger, yet he continues to bake apples, in case Link ever wakes up. He can move freely through the Great Plateau without getting tired thanks to his spirit form and now the monsters don’t represent any type of adversity since they can’t hurt him anymore.
But most of all, now Rhoam can talk to Zelda.
They are almost always one-sided conversations, but Rhoam tells her about his day, describes the feeling of the seasons over the kingdom so that she won't forget them while she is locked in the castle, and gives her words of encouragement to keep her going with her arduous task of containing the power of Ganon. And sometimes, he can hear Zelda's voice.
They are simple phrases that help him to continue anchored to the mortal world and not succumb to the desire to pass to the other side where his wife awaits him. They are almost always the same phrases:
Thank you for keeping going...
I could not do it without you...
I love you...
Hearing those tender words with his daughter's sweet voice is enough motivation to keep him going.
Summer turns to fall, fall to winter, and before Rhoam knows it, a hundred years have passed when spring again reaches the Great Plateau. He is no longer aware of how many apples he has baked and wasted awaiting the hero's awakening, or how many blood moons have passed over his head, resurrecting the monsters he had taken it upon himself to annihilate while he lived, but that morning seems to be different.
The Shrine of Resurrection has been opened.
A young man has run off and is observing the vast kingdom of Hyrule from a hill.
Rhoam knows what to do. It is time to fulfill his duty as a father.

WIP Wednesday
I’ve mostly been just writing the newest pirate chapter that I posted yesterday (subtle plug hahaha), but this was what I was working on just before. This is from the same fic as this WIP Wednesday. I don’t want to post this one yet because it still kind of sucks (like this, which is not edited at all), so I’m still fixing everything I have so far before actually posting. But today isn’t called Post a Fic Wednesday, it’s called WIP Wednesday, and this is a WIP!
Essentially, Link is tasked with training Zelda to defend herself after a series of Yiga attacks on her life. After some time, they’ve become good friends. She has him come to her room for lessons she doesn’t want ‘on the record’ basically, which is why Link is chilling in her room in this section. Totally not to make things unnecessarily dramatic.
~~~
When Link arrived that night, Zelda wasn’t in her room. He poked around for a moment just to make sure, and then relented to sit on her bed to wait for her, setting down his belt on the chest at the foot of her bed as he always did.
It was unusual that she wasn’t there. However, for the past several days, he’d been finding her waiting for him at the window, usually watching him scale the building with a look that betrayed her awe and her horror.
By her bedside were notebooks and tombs, all with marked pages. They ranged from geography, to biology. His hand reached out to take a book about plants, but he heard footsteps in the hall, followed by the booming voice of King Rhoam.
“Shit,” he muttered, looking around quickly before he slid into the closet just as Zelda’s door opened.
“—with the new treaty. I think that would be useful.”
“Yes,” Zelda agreed, softer than her father. “I think that would work, but we’d have to find a way to incorporate the Gerudo as well. Urbosa is instrumental, and I don’t believe we should keep her out.”
“That’s favoritism.”
“That’s being practical,” she challenged.
Rhoam chuckled. “You are learning well, Zelda. We will contact Urbosa immediately to inform her and see her position.”
“Thank you.”
“Well,” Rhoam said, “I’m going to head to bed now. Is there anything you need, or are you all set?”
“I’m fine; thank you.”
“It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” he said wistfully.
“Since the Yiga attack? Yes, quite a while.”
“I’m sorry I haven’t been as attentive.”
“No, but it’s really okay. I know the thought is there.”
There was the sound of rustling fabric that Link assumed was Rhoam hugging Zelda.
Then, “What’s that?”
Link peeked his head out to see what the king meant, and when he saw his belt still on Zelda’s trunk, he groaned as quietly as possible.
Zelda was fast, though. Her eyes darted around, looking for him, but she simply tsked, a lie springing to her lips far too easily. “It’s Link’s. He left it after we trained, and I didn’t feel like searching for him afterwards, so I just brought it back with me. I’m going to return it in the morning.”
“Ah,” Rhoam said, picking it up. “You should have gotten it back to him immediately. Looks like there’s some stuff he needs on here. I’m surprised he didn’t seek you out.”
Zelda swallowed and shrugged. “He’s diligent. Maybe he didn’t want to leave his post. Or he has spares. Or, most likely, he knew I’d just return it in the morning.”
“Hrmm, true.” Rhoam examined one of the daggers. “You should keep it in your wardrobe rather than laying around. What if someone did manage to get in here? A Yiga, or some other threat? Then you’ve just left a whole arsenal at the foot of your bed.”
“Then I’d just have weapons at my disposal to defend myself.” Zelda took it and made her way to her closet. “But I understand your point, father. You’re paranoid but—” Zelda yelped in surprise at the sight of Link innocently standing hidden in the closet, his head between two of her dresses.
“Zelda?” her father asked, hurriedly turning to her. “What is it?”
With a quick motion, Zelda pulled the dagger out just a bit and slid her thumb along it.
She turned to Rhoam with a light stream of blood moving down her wrist. “I cut myself. Don’t worry.” Handing Link his belt, as if she were hanging it up, she closed the door, giving him an exasperated look as she did.
Rhoam bit his lip nervously and handed her a nearby cloth. “Good thing you two haven’t covered blades yet. Make sure Link gives you all the safety protocols first. We don’t want that to happen on a larger scale.”
“Yes, father. I know.”
“Need any help with that, or are you all set?”
“I’m just going to wash it out. It’s fine, but thank you.”
“Okay then. Goodnight, Zelda. May the Goddess watch over your sleep.”
“Goodnight, father.”
Rhoam looked her over one more time before closing the door behind him with a tell-tale thud.
Zelda breathed out a sigh of relief. “You almost gave me a heart attack.”
Stepping out of the closet, Link grinned at her and tossed his belt right back onto the chest at the foot of her bed. “You were late.”
“I’m the Princess of Hyrule. I’m not late.”
“Terrible logic,” he said, snorting. But he grabbed a wash basin and brought it to her.
“Thanks.”
He watched her dip her hand into the water and flinch as it lapped over her wound. Resisting the urge to help her, he grabbed the top book from her pile instead.
“No, wait!” Zelda said, crossing the room quickly to try to snatch the book from him, hand dripping still.
“Plants and Horticulture of Hyrule Field.” He raised his eyebrow and flipped to her bookmark. “Are you planning to start a gard—oh!” A grin spread over his face as he read the words on the page. “Guardian technology? Hoarding your blasphemous texts, are we? Are you going to start tinkering with them again?”
“You know I’m not allowed to, so give it back!” Zelda burned red and grabbed his arm to try to pull at him, but with one hand, it was a losing fight. Still, she tried feebly, knowing he’d already seen it, so there wasn’t much reason to really fight anyway. It wasn’t as if he was going to rat her out either. She was simply at the mercy of his teasing for a few moments.
“How did you even get ahold of this?” he chuckled, turning the page at random as his eyes scanned over the words. “Isn’t half of this stuff forbidden to be this close to the castle?”
But they both answered at once, the obvious answer hitting him immediately as Zelda was ready to confess: “Purah.”
This time, Zelda just crossed her arms. “I wanted to… experiment. So, I have a fake cover on it in case someone nosey decides to grab the book! You know my father is paranoid.”
“I do know that.”
“It’s just harmless fun!” she said, still feeling the need to defend herself and her thick tomb. “I’m never allowed to have fun, especially with the books they make me read. I want to read about the blast radius the Guardians have while powered by a massive ancient core! And I want to know the components of a Sheikah slate, so, so badly. My father won’t let me do any of it. I just want to read something that isn’t so political!”
Link hummed and nodded. “That’s true. Those books are the worst. My favorite was, gods, what was it called? An Economic History of the Merchant’s Guild of Hyrule. That’s the one that only spit out rupee facts that you kept telling me, right?”
She blushed a bit more fiercely this time at the level of attention Link had paid her without her realizing, and she pushed him by the arm. “Okay, get out.”
He watched her turn redder by the minute and turned back to her to tap his fingers against the hardcover book tucked in her arms. “You know I’m not making fun of you, right? I think it’s admirable how much you prepare.”
Letting out a breath, she threw herself back onto the bed and slammed her book into her forehead with a groan.
Link chuckled and pried the book from her hands. “I’m serious. You’ll make a good queen.”
Her eyes suddenly darted up to his. She wasn’t sure she’d ever heard anyone tell her that, except maybe her father during her moments of absolute despair when he knew she needed to be cheered up.
Flipping the pages of the Guardian text, Link narrowed his eyes, flipped another page, glanced at her, and then flipped the page again. He waved the book in front of her face. “You wonder why the Goddess doesn’t like you; it’s because you write in your books. Ink is permanent you know.”
She ripped the book from his hand and hit him in the arm with it, doing her best not to let her laugh at his jab break through her angry façade. “I’m aware.”
Watching a drop of blood trail down her finger, Link reached out and cupped her hand in his just before the long trail dropped onto the page. “That’ll stain almost as much as ink. You should wrap that up.”
Zelda let him lead her back to the water, keeping the blood in his hand until they were safe. He dipped his hands in first and shook them out, noticing that there was only one rag.
“Thank you.”
“You really shouldn’t have done that, you know,” Link said, watching the water turn redder.
“I had to think fast, okay? Try ‘thank you for not letting me get caught in your closet, Zelda.’ If I can do it, so can you.”
“Fine. Thank you. I appreciate you covering for me, but you didn’t have to injure yourself to cause an appropriate distraction.”
“You’re so annoying,” she breathed. “End it at ‘thank you.’”
“Why do you put up with me?” Link laughed, handing her the rag.
She wrapped it around her finger, letting the wound clot. “Because.”
“Because--?”
“Because. Because I just do.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Fine. Because I think you’re amusing. Whether that’s a good thing or not is dependent on the situation.”
Link grinned softly, barely noticeable in anything but his eyes.
Zelda watched him, content in their mutual silence.
But even that had to end.
After her cut had stopped bleeding, Zelda pointed to the empty space in the room. “Okay. Get on the ground.”
“Demands, demands, Princess.”
Alrighty it’s Time 2 Rank Ships
Here’s my top ten list of Botw ships because I was inspired by recent events
10) Sooga x Kohga 6/10
some gay little ninjas just vibing with some potassium fruit. need I say more? you’ve SEEN hwaoc right? There is no way they’re not gay, it’s just an impossibility. Sooga basically carries Kohga like a bride. they’re getting married, and instead of flower petals it’ll be banana peels
9) Sidlink 6/10
Tall happy shark boi, tiny gremlin, one of the best dynamics. honestly I think I prefer them platonic, but it’s still a very good ship. Perfect for your fluff AND angst needs.
8) Tebasaki 10/10
fucking SUE me I love a loving husband and his wife just being normal and hanging out with their child ok call it basic or whatever but god fucking dammit I love them so much ok. Tebaharth is valid but nothing can replace the family sized hole in my heart except Tebasaki. I still hate that Nintendo named them after fried chicken, but at least they’re really cute together. Also TULIN
7) Miphlink 7/10
sof fish girl pining after handsome knight....friends to strangers to friends to lovers.......or even friends to best friends to lovers....or you could chuck the sweet romance build up completely in the angst bin and just kill one or both of them off. Mipha being a ghost but still healing Link and keeping him in the world of the living....god so much narrative potential, there’s much to do in the Miphlink world!
6) Urbosa x Queen 8/10
Let’s go lesbians let’s go. Urbosa literally says in her diary “I do not worship the goddess, I worship her” like BOI HELLO GAYSSS that is the gayest fucking thing I have ever seen. Also Zelda with two lesbian moms yes please, fuck king Rhoam.
5) Zelpha 7/10
MORE lesbians, because I said so. Well actually I see Zelda as pan, and Mipha bi, but long story short, girls. Mipha being supportive of her science gf, Zelda taking care of  Mipha and helping her as they both grow as princesses....There’s a lot to foil with them, and thus a lot that they can learn from each other and grow as BATTLE WIVES because Mipha teaches Zelda how to kick ass change my mind
4) Zelink 8/10
shut the FUCK up, it’s not basic. it kinda is, but shut up still. I love them. Yes they also make a great platonic relationship, but the sheer romantic tension of falling inlove with your body guard, and also the overarching story of your love lasting centuries and being the thing that saves each other and the entire world. when the world told you to worhsip and pray to a goddess, and instead you love and learn from your once hated companion and now your best friend and also learn to love yourself through that and also you both continue to save each other both physically and metaphorically time and time again fucking SHUSH it’s a popular ship for a reason and also chaotic science girl and arsonist is good
3) Miphvali 8/10
there are nice...they are cute......they are like the tebasaki of 100 years ago change my mind. They’re just NICE, it’s again with the foils and facade breakage and the tough sarcastic one softening to the cinnamon role dynamic GHHU I love them so much....Mipha’s kindness even being able to reach out to someone like Revali and then Revali helping her move on from Link and then brrrrrrr brainrot, they are so cute
2) Astor x Rhoam 10/10
A fantastic ship. 9/10. They both fucked the queen. They both aided in the destruction of the Calamity (Rhoam kinda fucked everyone over by digging up the Guardians). They both are mean to Zelda. Astor’s a greasy twink, Rhoam is the bimbo. PErfect. they should ballroom dance
1) Revalink 10/10
I have given many an essay on the topic, and there’s probably a few more in my drafts. I love them....enemies to lovers is my absolute jam. They’re in love. You can’t change my mind. Soulmates. This is a pattern but ships where two really flawed or broken characters find each other and mend and become better is my blood and life. Revalink rights forever
in kotg what are the champions relationship like with one another ( also including link and Zelda)
As I’ve said before Urbosa and Daruk are sort of the parents? I love found families so I honestly want them to be a little family. Rebels style you know?
Urbosa is def the most responsible, I imagine that when Zelda and Rhoam aren’t there, she’s the one leading the champions. She’s the chief, very motherly, so of course she’s the most responsible. She’s very comforting to the others when needed and overall they greatly respect her. Now, I haven’t played the dlc for botw so I haven’t read the journals, nor do I have creating a champion, so some facts may not add up, but I do know that Urbosa describes the others besides Daruk as very young, so I think she naturally feels very responsible for the other’s well being. She and Daruk, being the oldest, are good friends and I would describe them as drinking buddies. She’s very motherly towards Mipha, I feel like she and Zelda have a lot in common so Urbosa treats her the same way as Zelda. She sees Link as a goofy teenage boy (even tho he’s 20 in this au) but I feel like she treats Link the same way Telma treated Link in tp? Not super motherly towards him cuz he doesn’t need that (his mother is alive and well) but she does guide him when needed and sees him as a capable adult. And Revali… there’s a reason that he’s scared of her. Anytime Revali would act up she’d scold him and tell him that he’s basically an idiot lol. She understands that he really has a lot of underlying issues underneath his arrogant attitude so she does look out for him.
Daruk a fun dad type of character. I imagine he’s charismatic and helps hype people up when needed, and he’s kind of a ride or die kinda guy (lol). But he’s not responsible. There’s a reason why Urbosa is in charge and not him lol. He’s a loveable himbo who wants to look out for the kidlets you know? Obviously he thinks they’re all adorable, Link is his little guy, Mipha is the little zora princess who has a huge crush and wants his help to confess to Link (he’s a wingman ;)) and Revali is the sassy child who needs some love. Even tho Revali makes fun of him, he doesn’t get offended by any of it. Whether it’s because he’s understanding that Revali means nothing by it, or if it’s because he’s just a himbo, who knows. He loves the kids tho (I keep saying they’re kids they’re adults but THEYRE LITTLE 💀💀💀). But yeah, he just kind of vibes. He and Urbosa are indeed besties and again, he sees Zelda almost the same as Mipha. Just a sweet little child
Mipha is kind of a people pleaser and doesn’t know how to say no. So she finds the champions who won’t take advantage of her kindness very comforting. Now, Mipha’s mother is gonna be in this au (just say she’s alive and don’t worry about the logistics lol) but she doesn’t see her very often so it’s nice to have Urbosa there to tell her “hey take a break”. Zelda is her best friend and they love hanging out. Mipha is really the only person who got through to Revali, so she considers him to be a very good friend. Obviously she loves Link and is basically going to Daruk for help. She wants to impress him with her fighting skills <3 and yeah. She very much wants to protect them. If anything where to happen to them, well… you’ll see :3c
And lastly Revali. You saw that stupid respect thingy ma Bob i made. He’s afraid of Urbosa, but more in a fearful respect kind of way. He won’t cross her in any way and he doesn’t want to make her upset of course. He is very fond of Mipha and Zelda. He thinks they’re both very great people who are strong princesses. He respects Zelda’s determination and intelligence, and he respects Mipha’s kindness and selflessness. He may sass them a couple of times but overall he likes them. Even tho he makes fun of Daruk, he deeply cares for that rock guy. Daruk is just a silly guy and Revali will laugh at him but will defend him with his life. And Link…. Revali is a hardworking guy who is very good at what he does, and Link seems to be some prodigy who is good at everything, and that makes Revali very insecure. Like Zelda, Revali has a huge issue with comparing himself to others. If he’s not the best then he’s the worst, and Link really makes him struggle with that. It’s not Link’s fault, and Revali genuinely thinks he’s an amazing fighter, but he’ll never say it out loud. It’s complicated to say the least. Honestly Revali is the only person who sees him as a rival. Link doesn’t care and the others just think that Revali hates Link lol.
Now for Link and Zelda. Y’all know my thoughts on this zelink. I feel like Zelda would love Link but I don’t want to deal with a love triangle so I might not explore any of that. But they are just friends. You can overall pick up their thoughts on the champions with this.
hi 🧍
so first question. generally speaking what does your link think of the champions/zelda/rhoam both pre and post memory loss and are there any differences
oh Theres Differences! pre cal i think for most of it it was ‘well it is what it is (at his limit)’. the champions are complicated for him as to him its more of a professional relationship rather than friendship, so he does Not talk a lot about anything with them. if they inquire more he’ll tell them it’ll just muddy the waters of their relationships. out of everyone he trusts daruk the most and out of the group would be with him the most. revali he doesnt know how to interact with so he tries to avoid him especially because he knows he doesnt like him but revali keeps seeking him out so it becomes a game of ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING?’ for both of them. i do like to think they Would be friends at some point just not at the start. if/when they are friends he’d respect and disrespect revali simultaneously but also happy to be friends i think. happy probably isnt the right word but its close enough! urbosa he also avoids more out of anxiety than anything else. its like urbosa Is attempting to be friendly with him but they just dont know each other well enough. i think it would also be awkward with mipha, as if she openly worries about him he’d be bitter about it, and he Also doesnt know how to interact with her but thats because he feels like a completely different person than he used to be, so now that hes someone else would they still even be friends or know each other as they once did. its not either of their faults its judt a Disconnect. also i think shortly after the possible revali friend arc mipha joins in too through sheer force of will. to her it becomes a gambit of ‘how many times can i talk to them/ask questions until hacker voice Im In’. or one day she simply appears and they dont ask questions. i think with zelda he can be annoyed with at times (mainly when she sneaks out + goes too far when. insulting if thats the right word? lashing out) but most of the time hes completely apathetic. in the second half of her arc when she tries to learn more about him i think a complete switch in how she acts around him would be extremely jarring. hed go along with it but his feelings would become mixed in that he wouldnt know how to feel about her. he would agree that the prayers seem stupid though. rhoam he doesnt like too much. he doesnt hate him or anything but he fears punishment from him if he goes out of line or quits. especially with The Expectations and all that jazz. i do like to think the champiojs would all be friends at some point its just hard to write/imagine if that makes sense
post cal!!!! post cal rhoam thoughts would be ‘mgh i have a weird feeling about you (muscle memory remembering that he was the king -> GIVE ME THE PARAGLIDER. -> you (exasperation. like dealing with a grandparent who teases you/eats hot chips and lies) -> oh. -> ohhhhh… -> OH NO’ . once he learns about kakariko graves and thing kings tomb he would visit it once and awhile. he wears the sweater he gave him a lot too instead of the champions or hylian tunic. its like yeah the guy was annoying but he did help him/do his best and now hes truly alone. now he has to save zelda. the champions! he has no idea how to feel about any of them. the disconnect is bigger this time + he doesnt know if he misses them? misses the times they had?? its the same dilemma past him had with mipha but on a wider scale + they arent really worrying about him now. most champions talk about saving zelda which is fair enough but he just never gets to know them. he hangs on to their weapons and everything but unless he calls on their powers he wouldnt talk to them. once again i like to think they talk about things before they disappear through link calling them specifically but yeah. he also just kinda feels sad about them, especially when knowing the divine beasts are walking giant tombs. zelda!! hough. same as the champions but Worse. i feel like hed escort her to kakariko but would likely avoid her. unless they talk and zelda and him do hiking/traveling sessions. they could be good traveling buddies actually. i think zelda would like to do a lot of that and itd take her mind off of Everything. also i think he would like to send her increasingly stupid things (first postcards and then pictures of lynels about to stab him Then the eighth heroine statue just to see what she has to say about it) but overall i think they do their own things during this point. they can forge a friendship over time but being around each other every day i cant see happening
ONE MORE POST about botw/aoc before I go to bed: it is some fucking BULLSHIT that Rhoam didn't get zelda to hang out with ACTUAL MAGIC WIELDERS.......(idk like MIPHA ???) Like ik healing magic is not the same as darkness sealing magic but what other actual shot do u have come on bro
it just kills me every time that right before the calamity shows up when they came down from the mountain that Mipha was about to give her SOME ACTUALLY RELEVANT ADVICE............................. and then never got to say it 🤦🏼‍♀️
aaaaaa i also love urbosa (i’m the previous anon that asked for her ehe) i am just a Little Lesbian who is starved for content... is it too much to ask for sfw alphabet with her? i really don’t think you write her out of character like you worry in the tags :>
urbosa sfw alphabet
a/n - THANK YOU!!! that means so much to hear fndbsngm
also, i’m so sorry about the wait on this one!! my school’s trimester is ending early so i’ve been trying to raise my grades at mach twenty. i do have a break now though, so i’ll be able to write more frequently!!
pairing - urbosa x reader
warnings - none!!
Tumblr media
a = affection (how affectionate are they? how do they show affection?)
urbosa prefers giving verbal affection, and receiving physical affection! she compliments you as often as possible
b = best friend (what would they be like as a best friend? how would the friendship start?)
as a best friend, she teases you a lot. she's like a big sister
but like. y’know. not in a weird way,,
c = cuddles (do they like to cuddle? how would they cuddle?)
she does! she’s not an extremely touchy person, but it would be comforting to hold you
her favorite positions are to lay on her back and put your head on her chest or shoulder, or spooning. no matter your height, She Will Always Be The Big Spoon
d = domestic (do they want to settle down? how are they at cooking and cleaning?)
urbosa would still want to lead gerudo town as chieftain, but she’d settle down more in terms of fighting. she wouldn’t want to risk herself as much considering you were there
honestly i feel like urbosa is just That Person who fucking sucks at cooking. she knows it too; she’ll just kind of stare blankly at you in pain if you suggest she cook
e = ending (if they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
f = fiance(e) (how do they feel about commitment? how quick would they want to get married?)
she would be fine with the idea of commitment! she would want to wait at least a few years before considering marriage. it’s a weighty decision and she doesn’t want to make the wrong choice since it could harm both of you
g = gentle (how gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
she’s very gentle with you! definitely not as much as someone like mipha, but she’s very careful not to accidentally hurt you
h = hugs (do they like hugs? how often do they do it? what are their hugs like?)
urbosa doesn’t hug you often, but she shows physical affection in other ways. i.e. gently pulling you to lean on her when sitting down, keeping a hand on the small of your back, running her hands through your hair (if she can), etc.
i = i love you (how fast do they say the L-word?)
probably a couple months at least? (i've never been in a relationship so is that normal????)
she’ll say it on a calmer night, when the yiga clan is silent for once and king rhoam hasn’t called for her help. on rare days like these, she’s accustomed to drawing a bath that smells good as hell, so you’ll be really comfy and probably sleepy LMAO
will tell you right before you fall asleep when she’s thinks you aren’t awake!!! once she realizes you are, will 100% give u a forehead kiss
j = jealousy (how jealous do they get? what do they do when they’re jealous?)
urbosa doesn’t get jealous very often, mainly pissed if someone won’t stop harassing you. she’ll wrap an arm around your waist, and if they aren’t already intimidated (they’d have to be drunk or just have The Audacity) she won’t hesitate to roast tf out of them. if you thought her teasing you was bad, it’s terrifying now. she won’t hold back
k = kisses (what are their kisses like? where do they like to kiss you? where do they like to be kissed?)
she honestly doesn’t have a preference on where to be kissed! she likes kissing you on the shoulder, forehead, and hand the most. :))
l = little ones (how are they around children?)
she’s actually really good with kids! even before she became chieftain, she liked hanging out + playing pretend with them
something really cool about urbosa that the kids like is that she treats them with high respect and talks to them like adults!!! (but very sensitive adults at that; she doesn’t tease them much. kids deserve kindness and you bet she’s gonna fulfill that)
m = morning (how are mornings spent with them?)
she prefers long hours of sleep + waking up late. so if it’s a chill day when you’re not needed for anything, she’ll stay with you in bed for hours
if she wasn’t able to sleep as much, she’ll be lowkey grumpy in the mornings until she gets her tea
n = night (how are nights spent with them?)
like the mornings, she drinks tea a lot before bed. she gives me jasmine or chamomile tea energy???? idk
long baths are a must, especially since it’s so sandy,,, everywhere,,,,
she’s the type to have a ton of candles and nice soaps and stuff, so she always smells really good before bed
o = open (when would they start revealing things about themselves? do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)
pretty early in the relationship! she trusts you enough to talk about things that are bothering her/have in the past.
although, i’m not sure if she’d talk about zelda’s mother and stuff like that due to privacy reasons. unless zelda herself didn’t express concern over it, she’d keep the details pretty tight
p = patience (how easily angered are they?)
unless you’re a yiga member, urbosa’s patience is very thick. i literally cannot think of a time she would get fully mad at you??
if you ever put yourself in danger, (especially for her) she would definitely scold you. never angry, though
q = quizzes (how much would they remember about you? do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)
urbosa remembers things even you don’t remember. mainly things you point out at a marketplace or something.
(on that note, she is absolutely the type to spoil you. you can mention a pretty flower in rito village in passing and she’ll be convincing revali to go get it for you within an hour)
r = remember (what is their favorite moment in your relationship?)
IM SORRY I COULDNT THINK OF ANYTHING FOR THIS ONE EITHER
s = security (how protective are they? how would they protect you? how would they like to be protected?)
very protective!! even if you can fight/are a champion, she’ll subconsciously be protecting you in battle.
she doesn’t want you to worry about protecting her, honestly. (tbh she lowkey likes when you lean on her for safety)
t = try (how much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)
she puts a lot of effort into them!! she actually finds it really fun to get to plan dates and stuff. she loves giving gifts and they are always very well thought out!!
u = ugly (what would be some bad habits of theirs?)
bold of you to assume urbosa isn’t perfect
v = vanity (how concerned are they with their looks?)
she does care about her looks, but only because it makes her feel good!! as long as she looks professional and clean, urbosa could care less about what other people think.
w = whole (would they feel incomplete without you?)
urbosa is comfortable enough with herself to be okay without a partner, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t hurt. if you ever were to get hurt/leave her, she would be crushed, but she would be able to heal.
x = xtra (a random headcanon for them.)
she hates the cold with a burning passion and anytime she has to go to the tundra, she’s grumpy the whole time
y = yuck (what are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)
i couldn’t think of a partner one, but she’s scared of dogs for some reason. she is a cat person and they lowkey freak her out
z = zzz (what are some sleep habits of theirs?)
even though she has guards, being the chieftain means either of you could be put in danger at any time. because of this, she’s a fairly light sleeper. she’s also pretty protective in her sleep! she’ll pull you close to her and keep a hand on the back of your neck or stomach
Ok but I have been thinking about this “Astor takes Zelda when she’s young” AU all night like:
So Zelda’s mom dies and Astor gets his astrolabe from Asivus after he fucks with the guardians and [REDACTED] and Astor has his little Calamity agenda all within a shorter amount of time than the span of time in HKU. This is so that Zelda doesn’t have too much knowledge about her role as Hylia’s vessel yet so that when Astor takes her she’s like “dope” and doesn’t really know exactly how important she is. I mean as soon as your mom dies and your dad turns into a dick, the first magic dadstor to come into your radius going like “let’s go vibe somewhere else” I think anyone would accept that.
So the princess is whisked away and the kingdom goes into pure shit and chaos, and Rhoam is left no choice as to basic double, no, triple down on Sheikah tech and the divine beasts, all while sending out searches for the princess—which never come into fruition.
Meanwhile, Zelda grows up with the Yiga Clan as an assassin shes got a sickle and short hair because yeah!! Zavis is still a spy but instead of joining the Yiga Clan to be more useful to Zelda, he joined the Yiga Clan to find her and when he did, since his dad and Zelda are all basically on the same side he doesn’t have really any loyalty to the crown anymore
Now just in case, Astor pretty much lies to Zelda about her past as she grew up, just so that there isn’t a chance she gets dragged back into castle life or anything. “Oh yeah, you were just some little noble girl who’s dad was a dick, and I was friends with your mom before she died so I decided to take you in” and it lines you just enough with what few memories Zelda has of her childhood that she believes it. And ironically, with her loyalty to Astor and the Yiga Clan, she grows to despise royals and laughs at the stories of the missing princess like “ha, what a nerd. Hyrule really is doomed since she dipped from her destiny, what a loser.”
Does Siv team up with Astor earlier since he doesn’t have Zelda to give him hope that he can overcome the Calamity? Maybe. Idk.
So anyways, Zeldas going out doing Yiga things and she meets a knight with a pretty cool looking sword, and she’s like “Oooo imma steal that” and then she tries but she failed because this kid is REALLY skilled. He beats her, but doesn’t kill her when he realizes “You’re just a kid?” Then, they hear someone coming, like a captain or something, and he tosses her a few rupees like “get out of here and go home, the others won’t hesitate to kill a Yiga like you—girl or not”
Now Zelda goes home but she’s PISSED. Not only did she get her ass beat despite being the most badass Yiga she knows, the kid has the audacity to toss her RUPEES as if she was just some common poor thief. What an asshole! But also, she’s super ingrained by him because pretty much her whole life she’s believed the knights and those with the royals are a bunch of ruthless assholes who do nothing but blindly adhere to their commands and rules. So the fuck is with this kid??
She doesn’t tell anyone about this encounter (mostly because she doesn’t want to be yelled at, nor admitting the embarrassing detail of being beaten) but she does tell Zavis about it. And he’s like “pfft. He’s just a kid, btt it give him a few years and he’ll grow up like everyone other asshole out there, trust me”
Then later on, Zelda sneaks out looking for this kid again. And she does, and they kinda cross blades, but mostly she just complains to him about how annoying he is, and she tosses the rupees he gave him back like “I don’t need your pity money!” And they banter for a bit more and eventually she’s like “what’s your name, huh?” And the knight is like “....you don’t know who I am?”
“Oh let me guess, you’re one of the hundreds of people named Link, is that it?”
“Something like that.”
“Well Link, I’m Mallory, and I’m going to kill you now!”
Suddenly Link’s stomach grumbles and he sheathes his sword “Dinner break!”
“WHA—?? Keep fighting me you idiot!”
“Nah...I’m super hungry.”
“What?!?! What’s wrong with you??? I’ll kill you!”
“No you won’t.”
“I will!”
“You’re already breaking a sweat and I’ve been holding back this whole time. Plus, if you wanted to kill me why did you just give me back my rupees when I had my back turned instead of stabbing me? Either you like talking to me, or you suck at your job. Anyways, cucco nugget?”
So they’re kinda friends now.
So time passes and they’re still secret friends, and they like being friends because they “keep it real” as the kids say. Link never admits to her that he’s the hero, but vents about his knight life and his dad who never seems to be happy for him despite his accomplishments. And Zelda vents about her life in the Yiga Clan, and despite being the best, Astor never seems to want her involved in the more important missions and never tells her jackshit”
“Well I guess that’s good for me. Would hate to have the Yiga’s best asset being used.”
“Hey this is serious!! I need to help in the destruction of the royal family with the Calamity!”
“Do you really believe that? That we’re all already doomed?”
“Well yeah. I mean, even if the hero’s around, the princess is dead, so you all don’t stand a chance. But don’t worry, when the Calamity comes I’ll give you a heads up and you can go chill in Faron or something”
Then, things be picking up with Astor and the gang, and he’s finally found an opportunity to kill the hero. And Zelda remembers hearing from Link that he sometimes hangs out with the Champions and the hero for protection, and she’s like, “can I come?” because she wants to be useful, but also to make sure Link doesn’t die or anything. Yet per usual, Astor’s like “No. Just stay here.”
Now Zelda gets super pissed and him and they have a fight, mostly circulating around the fact that Zelda’s been nothing but loyal to the Yiga Clan and yet she nevers gets to actually feel useful and it also put on the sidelines whenever anything actually impactful happens. “Hell, even ZAVIS does more than I do! What’s your problem?! Can’t you have confidence in my for once??”
And Astor in Astor fashion ends the argument super harshly like, “You won’t be ready for anything, ever. You’re still incredibly naive and foolish, so if you want to help, then you can help everyone by staying here, and safe, and away from everyone. THAT is the only thing of use you can do, so do it.” And then they go off to kill the hero and Zelda runs off to her room al frusterated and shit.
But you know, you often meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it. And this Astor’s little plan to keep Zelda away from Calamity related business so that she can never discover her powers or who she is...is gonna backfire, splendidly.
So Zelda sneaks out anyway, with the idea in her head that if she kills the hero before Astor even gets there he’ll have no CHOICE but to recognize how competent and useful she is and he’ll eat his words!
But then she gets there, and she sees the Champions, and Link, and she goes to confront Link with sickle in hand like, “I don’t need you! Just tell me where the hero is, and I’ll spare the rest of you!” And the Champions are like “wtf” and Link is like, “Just leave. You don’t know what you’re doing.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing! Just tell me where the hero is and no one else has to get hurt.”
And Daruk’s like. “Uhh...but he is the hero?” And everyone glares at Daruk, and Zelda goes into shock, like w h a t. Aw shit..so that fancy sword was the master sword...and he’s so good at fighting because he’s the bloody hERO FUCK, IT’S SO OBVIOUS NOW FUCK.
And I feel like as Zelda is contemplating her life choices in the moment. Revali would attack first because he’s like that. So he shoots her in the shoulder, or something, and she releases Link, and then something something her mask falls of and Urbosa recognizes her because of course she does. And Urbosa’s like “Zelda?!??!?” And Zelda’s like, “Who the fuck are you? Who’s Zelda? I’m Mallory.”
And by that point, Astor is there and he’s like “wtf is going on here.” And he sees Zelda, and he’s like “Mallory get over here right now.” And she hesitates for a moment because she’s right between him and Link.
“Move aside, now. Quickly. We’ll discuss your insolence when we get back home.”
And she’s like “...No.”
“Excuse me?”
“T-There’s no need for this. The princess is dead, right? S-So what’s even the point?”
“We have to ensure victory for Lord Ganon. We’re just making sure there’s no chance of anything happening. There’s no need to defend them, they’re all doomed, they’re all the same. If the hero doesn’t die by my hand, he’ll die by the Calamity’s. So move.”
“You don’t know that!”
And Astor raises and eyebrow because this is basically the first time Zelda has questioned this, ever. “What did you say?”
“I...I said you don’t know everything! You could be wrong!”
And he gives a sad smile and shakes his head. “I know more than you know.”
“I’ll tell you when we’re done here, promise.” And then he does his little malice teleport thing and he’s about to kill Link with a big ol’ malice attack, and Zelda does that reaching out thing like “No!”
And the BOOM. Her powers awaken, and EVERYONES like “oh shIT.” And Link’s the first one to be like, “You’re the princess???” And Astor’s like “hmmmmmmmm....fuck.” And Urbosa’s like, “Ok, I’m gonna stab Astor now.” and then she does! good for her.
And then Zelda is freaking out like what the fuck just happened who huh where what huh and then theres conflict because she doesn’t want Link to die but also his team just sorta stabbed her father figure and then its chaos or something and uhhhhhhhhh yeah that’s all I got I have no idea how this would end.
I feel Zelda wouldn’t go back to the Yiga Hideout after that, in fact I think she might run off with Siv because he’s like “hey, hey, hey. maybe gimme some of that light juice and get the calamity out of my head?” And of course Zavis would go whereever Zelda went (maybe?) She definitly wouldn’t go with the Champions yet, but they’re out looking for her. And also Astor would be looking for her with the Yiga Clan but mostly he’s like “fuck my life.” because literally everything he had been working towards and planning for over a decade has been ruined in like, an hour.
Okay you mentioned Kohga having the hots for king Rhoam. I'm sorry, but can we see something with that???
I make ONE fucking joke, and Ya'll take it to the next level. Fuck you, let's get this over with.
"Kingie! Long time no see big guy!"
Kohga was planning on just hanging out at the hideout today, when he was given a summon by the king. Not that Kohga minded a trip to the castle, he was always fed pretty well. He dove in for a high five with the king, but from the way he glared, he could tell he was NOT in the mood. Even the blade master he brought with him had to cringe at the rejection. Sooga joined him too, but seemed unfazed by the rather cold attitude.
"I'm glad you came at such short notice. I have something very important to discuss with you."
"Oh is it about the fact that we're buying up all the bananas? Look, we still gotta do SOMETHING evil to-"
"It's NOT."
His voice was steely, firm. Someone was NOT happy. His glare was so menacing, his boys took a step forward, as if the king was about to try to beat his ass. Kohga patted their shoulders, making them ease up a bit.
"Easy boys, easy. Look, you two wait out here, imma have a chat with Kingy here."
Sooga of course held protests, but Kohga held his hand up, silencing him.
"Trust me. You two hunks can dash in and protect me at any time. Not that I need it. Though I DO like the attention."
His men bowed, keeping their place. Kohga followed King Rhoam, right to his secret study, in the library, beyond the metal book case. He hated royals, but he had to hand it to Rhoam, there were so many sneaky spaces to hide and explore (and coming from the chief of the Yiga clan, that was high praise). Rhoam shut it behind them both, and Kohga took a look around. This was way different from the main rooms in the castle. Much more personal, snuggly even. A few crates of supplies, a desk full of scattered books, a few chairs, and even a few weapons hung on the wall besides them.
"Nice spot. How many people know about this little place?"
"The ones who built it, and my daughter."
"Well, aren’t I special?"
Kohga chuckled, pulling up a seat and helping himself to the surprisingly comfy chair. He might steal this, honestly. King Rhoam took a seat in front of him, clearing his throat.
"I suppose you're wondering why I summoned you?"
"If it's not about the bananas, then no not at all."
Kohga was already kinda bored, and he started to hum, playing with his hands. He found it easier than just sitting there and looking someone in the face.
"It's about my daughter, Zelda. She complained about you."
Kohga stopped, finally looking at his face. He was about to ask if he was serious, and apparently he was.
"Whaaaat? ME? What did I do?"
He sighed, before folding his arms across his chest.
"She is growing tired of your men. Apparently you give them permission to try to court her."
Kohga wanted to argue with that, but then he thought about it. He was kinda at fault, getting whatever clan member interested to hit on her. Flowers, treats, poetry, even just getting a few smooth talkers to try their hands at getting her attention. He just shipped Mipha and Link so hard, he decided to boot out the competition. Not that he hated her, of course not. Kohga shrugged.
"How is that a problem? I'm throwing HUNKS at her! No clue how that makes ME the bad guy! It’s because they’re Yiga, isn’t it?”
“It’s because she’s already in love with her knight. I’m already planning on giving him my blessings, should they finally decide to wed.”
Kohga should’ve expected it honestly, this old fashioned kinda ranting. Sure they were both kinda up there in age, but they were NOT alike. Kohga shook his head, standing up from his seat.
“Look, I don’t have kids, so I dunno what it does to ya, but you’re taking things WAY outta proportion here. You’re already ready for your daughter, seventeen, to get married.”
King didn’t seem to get it, as if this was a totally normal thing.
“Well yes. Royals marry around this age, why dawdle?”
Kohga put his hand on Rhoam’s shoulder, who didn’t seem to love it, but didn’t exactly push Kohga off.
“Look, let the girl have a little FUN before she gets hitched! She’s got the rest of her life for that stuff, if anything I’m just giving her choices.”
“I’m...not following.”
“For the love of- look. If she wants me to back off, I’ll tell my guys to heel. But I don’t really think she’d complain about me. She only really clams up about you. So it’s why I’m thinking SHE’S not complaining. YOU are.”
He knew by the look in his face that he was right. Kohga chuckled, hands on his hips.
“You don’t gotta lie like that! Makin’ me think I was a bad guy here! If YOU have problems, say you do. Doesn’t mean I’ll listen, but at least you wouldn't be a liar.”
His brows furrowed, but Kohga found it hard to take him seriously at this point.
“I am saying this for the sake of my daughter. If she is to remain pure-”
“Oh great, purity culture bullshit. Look, Kingy, don’t blame her for the fact that you haven’t gotten any lately.”
He put his hand over his chest, as if he had something just terribly hurtful.
“I beg your pardon?!”
“You heard me! You know If I didn’t know any better, you’re just mad because everyone’s gettin’ some lovin’ but you.”
Kohga leaned against the King’s chair. This was some juicy shit, you bet your bananas he was gonna milk it for all it was worth.
“When WAS the last time you got off? Few months?”
King Rhoam looked at him as if he had gone insane, before pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Almost nineteen years, roughly.”
“Holy-you haven’t nutted since your kid was born? Fucks sake, I’d be grumpy as hell too, no wonder.”
He wasn’t even expecting him to answer, honestly. King Rhoam scoffed, as if regretting giving him a response.
“We’re derailing the topic at hand-”
“Now now, I’m not done yet.”
Kohga moved in front of him, one hand at the chair, and pinning Rhoam between the seat, and Kohga’s face.
“Look, I get it. You wanna take care of what you have, you’re constantly stressed, I can only imagine how bad you have it. And knowing I was the cause of some of that stress? Selfish of me really. Let me make it up to you there, Kingy.”
Rhoam looked perplexed at his choice of words, like he figured he would be. Kohga always did have the hots for the clueless ones.
“I’m saying, let me end your streak.”
Still nothing. Holy hell, he forgot he loved idiots. He sighed, pointing down to the king’s crotch.
“Let me polish the royal scepter. Take a gander at the royal jewels. I’m essentially saying let me get you off.”
THAT seemed to get a rise out of the king, given the way he damn near jumped out of his chair.
“That is NOT why I summoned you here! In the SLIGHTEST! The AUDACITY!”
Kohga let go off the chair, putting his hands on his hips.
“One, you have the audacity to NOT immediately say yes, I’m a goddamn treat. Two, why the hell not? You ever fuck anyone that WASN’T the Queen?”
No response. So that was a no. Oh this was going to be some fucking fun. Kohga put his hands on his knees, leaning in so his mask was so close to touching his face.
“Tell you what, because I like newbies. You let me do my thing. And if you don’t like it, you just say the word. In exchange, I’ll tell my guys to heel. Eh? Cool offer?”
King Rhoam didn’t immediately say no, like he expected him to. He seemed stunned at first, but hey, you miss every shot you don’t take. He was going to get a no any-
“Alright. Fine. So long as this does NOT leave this study.”
Holy SHIT. This guy did NOT just say yes. Kohga fumbled a bit, clearly not knowing how to react. He wasn’t bluffing in the slightest, he just had no clue that the king would ACTUALLY take him up on that. He chuckled, poking Rhoam on his nose.
“Well look at you! Growin’ outta that royal shell, color me surprised! Alright, stays between us. Now, you just sit right there, and let ol’ Kohga do his thing.”
He made the king tilt his head up a bit, so he couldn’t see him. Not letting him see what he was doing would make him freak out a lot less, and he could be in denial about the fact that a dude was gonna suck him off. Kohga pushed aside his mask, just enough to reveal his lips, before he got down on his knees. He parted the King’s legs, taking but a moment to massage them. Lot’s of clothes made the guy look almost fat, but Kohga knew better. Those were some toned muscles under that, just how Kohga imagined. He kept massaging for a moment longer, getting him used to being touched, before he un did his belt, and pulling him free of his cloth confines. And holy. Shit. King Rhoam was a dilf dream down here. He wasn’t absolutely massive, but he certainly wasn’t a pipsqueak. He was long, thick, with plenty of white pubic hair. Kohga softly stroked the length of it, and watched as Rhoam seemed to freeze upon the contact.
“Right right, been a while. I’ll go slow, I’ll go slow. Easy does it.”
He had a rather lovely curve downward, and Kohga could only picture how well it’d go down his throat. He kept his motions nice and slow, till he noticed the King’s grip on the armrests loosen. Then he started to up the ante, just a little bit. With his other hand, he cupped his balls, lightly rubbing them in his palm. Then he heard him groan. It was faint, but Kohga caught it. That was the sound of a man who hadn’t been touched in a long, long time. Even by himself, apparently. He was already getting stiff in his hand.
“You’ve...done this before.”
“Not with a royal at least. But yeah, Kohga’s seen a few bananas in his day.”
Rhoam clearly had some kind of retort, before he seemed to jump upon feeling Kohga kiss the head. Kohga tried not to snicker, finding his sensitivity just hilarious. His age seemed to not affect his need for attention. Especially given that a few kisses around the base was enough to get him nice and hard in his hand. He made his touch a bit firmer on his balls, and his stroking a bit quicker on his length. And Rhoam was LOVING it. His head was tossed back, his breathing got all nice and fast, and he could see, past that beard, him biting his bottom lip.
“There we go, all nice and comfy. Any chance you want me to stop here?”
Rhoam was so out of it, he couldn’t do anything but shake his head. Kohga chuckled. He was gonna love this. Feeling him start to throb in his hand, he decided to really wow ol’ Kingy here. He pulled his hand away, using it to palm at himself, before he put the head right in his mouth. Rhoam’s breath hitched, and Kohga loved that. Love how he was making a royal so weak. He pushed himself to make more, stopping shy of halfway down his length. It was enough to make Rhoam squirm in his seat, and even put his hand right on top of Kohga’s head. How cute. Kohga groaned as he pushed his head back and forth, really getting a feel for that thick cock. Then he pulled away, nice and slowly, drool still connecting them.
"Why did you-"
"You were about to cum. I could tell. I want this to be REALLY good for you, so you're going to wait."
"I DEMAND you-"
He was halted when Kohga took a hold of his balls. Nothing too hard, just enough to get him to shut up.
"No no no. You don't get that attitude with me. You rule Hyrule, I rule your cock. I decide when you cum. And because you wanna act up, you get a punishment. Look at me."
Rhoam looked, despite not wanting to, at all. Kohga kept massaging him, tediously and slowly.
"You wanna cum? You wanna shoot your load down my pretty throat? You gotta ask for it like a grown up. No tantrums. Go on. Ask."
Rhoam clearly didn't want to, but Kohga’s lips (and throat) was a blessing, not a right. So he sighed, and made himself obey.
"I...would like to orgasm-"
"Try again. Cum. Make me WANT it."
Rhoam swallowed, before trying again.
"I would...like to cum. In your mouth."
"There we go, much better. Knew you could be a polite boy."
He took a minute to suckle at his balls, really coating them in drool, before taking Rhoam fully in his mouth. That's right, every bit of that royal cock found it's way into his mouth, and Kohga gagged. It was intentional, and it made Rhoam moan desperately. So close. Kohga wasted no more time, and acted like the perfect dick sucker he knew he was.
Kohga was relentless. He groaned loudly as he bobbed his head back and forth, practically fucking his own mouth from the force. Rhoam was really getting into it now, cursing and panting under his breath, especially when Kohga pulled away to aggressively suck at his tip. Kohga was absolutely, and positively cock hungry, and he wasn’t afraid at all to show it. Kohga slurped, and gagged, slurped and gagged, grumbling as if he was an animal, greedy for the chance of tasting cum. Then he got it.
King Rhoam came, and Kohga gulped it down, only pulling away to smear it against his throbbing length. It was a big load, just how he thought it'd be. Ribbons and ribbons of cum littered their clothes, the floor, and the insides of his stomach. He pulled away once he knew no more would be cumming, feeling no more reason to. King Rhoam was a SIGHT to behold. A shaking, panting, cum covered mess. Kohga chuckled, taking a quick second to clean up. A good cock sucker could clean himself up in a flash, as if nothing ever happened. He stood back up, pulling King Rhoam’s face by his beard, and he kissed him. Not because he liked him, nor did he think he was cute. It was because there was something humiliating about making the King himself, taste his own load. He pulled away, wiping his lips, and putting his mask right back down. He could see that little bit of cum on his lips, and it was so goddamn funny to him.
“Glad we had this little chit chat, Kingy wingy. You ever need to get a load of your chest, you know who to send for. Though, I don’t do anything for free. Can I take the chair?”
Rhoam just sat there, looking bewildered, before he gently nodded. Kohga clapped his hands a bit, grabbing the chair, and giving Rhoam a little bit of a wave. He managed to meet up with Sooga and the Blade master, who didn’t even get to say hello before he made them carry the chair he was holding. Sooga looked at it curiously, turning to Kohga.
“Are we stealing this?”
“Nope! Said I could have it! It’s a real nice chair.”
“Why would he give it to you?”
“We had a nice long chat. Wasn’t something I saw...comin’”
Kohga grinned behind his mask. He was an absolute STUD, no doubts about that.
