i think people who refuse to give any sympathy towards mapleshade's situation or her acknowledge as a victim of the clan structure are boring but i'm also glad the fandom have mostly moved out of the "poor sweet gentle mother who was fully morally justified in everything she did (and moral justification being the end all be all of character analysis) who goes on to be a cool protective Mum(tm) to all the dark forest trainees. who is crookedstar" being treated as an interpretation that is literal and not what mapleshade views herself as. bro mapleshade is an asshooole she's a bad parent and a selfish person and it's a disservice to her character to wash her clean of that instead of working around it lmfao. if you make her either Born Evil or Did Nothing Wrong you are missing all the fun parts

#ravenwing frecklewish and appledusk are all also sympathetic assholes to varying degrees #but i don't mind frecklewish takes in particular veering hard into the sympathtic side since i think she's like #been a genuine victim of writing and fandom misogyny in how she's been viewed in the past. people can make her nicer as a treat #and also since she is viewed exclusively through the pov of a character who fuckin hates her from day one #and the tangible weight of her actions tends to get super overblown but that's a discussion we've all been over a few years ago

Im about to make a whole osp style video on the importance of pacing and spacing in relation to whump or an authors decision to seriously harm a character

#kipspeak #long story short I wholeheartedly believe if you space it out wrong you will disengage your audience #and as a general rule of thumb you have a maximum of THREE instances across micro and macro story beats individually #Which both rest on a sliding scale of importance from minor to major and the spacing and groupage depends on what it is #three is also a guideline- I’ve seen characters hurt in unsatisfactory or overblown ways with only two; and I’ve seen it done #very well with four pushing five major focus points #setting also matters. Everything matters. But the conclusion is this #You are always on a balance beam with making your blorbo miserable. be aware of your major ‘chapter’ breaks (reset points)#… I have thoughts about things that I think have done it wrong and it is entirely about the pacing/spacing and not about the actual event o #the whump.#ahve I mentioned I hate that word yet. whump. I'm not done listening to the Alex Hirsch interviews but god it just reminds me both of how much I miss this show and how much I appreciate the love and care that went into it. I love listening to him talk about the characters with a frankness and care that shows how much he values them being three dimensional beings.

You know what, recontextualizing the changes CQL makes to the story from "anti-JGY propaganda" to "justifying WWX and LWJ taking down JGY" actually kinda works.

Because like... I don't think MDZS!WWX and LWJ are justified in taking down JGY! I kind of don't like them! The only way I can really understand WWX's actions irt JGY are like... He's negatively affected by NMJ's empathy the whole time. Until the end where he almost realizes he's fucked up.

And maybe instead of watching CQL like "well with what actually happened, the heroes kind of suck" it's just like... Giving more likeable versions of the heroes. Not in terms of 'doing less evil things' but in terms of 'not being horrible hypocrites who don't need to be doing this, are making it all about their stupid relationship issues, and are knowingly siding with the actual villain'. And that's kind of better for them tbh.

It was a bit weird to see this video after the news of Toriyama’s death. However, this is another video from Why It Doesn’t Work For Me that I really appreciate. I think she did a good job of articulating how the hate for Dad!Goku is overblown while explaining Goku’s shortcomings as a dad. I liked the comparison she made between Goku and Mon Mothma as parents who were good people but failed a bit as parents.

Nevertheless, Goku will always be one of my fav Dragonball characters. I just don’t like him as a father post Cell games.
