KISS; Kissing the icing off the other’s cheek, for Rulie?
Reggie yawned as he flicked on the lights to the kitchen, hearing the familiar hum of the fluorescents, the permanent scent of sugar hanging in the air. He readied the coffee maker as Julie tidied the front to her liking.
"Right," she said, clapping her hands together. "What's on the docket for today?"
"The lemon squares are doing really well, so I'm thinking a double batch of those are in order," Reggie said, ticking each item off on his fingers. "The Hendersons are coming by at noon to pick up the petit fours for the baby shower, Carrie wants a batch of strawberry shortcake macarons for her gathering tonight, I have the stuff for the pavlovas at the ready, and the cupcakes need icing."
"Righty-o, I'll make a basic buttercream and we can flavour and dye it as needed," Julie replied, flicking on their speaker and started blasting the playlist they made to bake to. Some chefs might prefer quiet, or the bustle of the kitchen, but she and Reggie were music lovers at heart, so they always had a song blaring while they were back here.
"The petit fours just need to be boxed, so I'll get that done while I wait for the egg waits to come up in temp. Then start on the mise for the pavlovas," Reggie said with a nod, then pulled Julie in for a quick peck before they broke apart to start their tasks.
A lot of their friends and family thought they were a little insane, starting a business together so soon after getting married, but with their long hours at separate bake shops, they replied it was the best way to spend any time together. Plus they had met working a a little cafe together, her doing pastry while he did more complex deserts and fell in love, so it seemed to work out well for them.
It had been a long hard road to get Starlight & Sunshine Sweets up and running; from getting the loans to designing the space and designing the menu. It had lead to a fair few fights and storming off, then always coming back together, usually each of them holding an apology treat and laughing together as they scarfed them down over apologies and kisses.
But it was theirs, open and booming with business. They had even expanded, bringing in Willie with his killer barista skills to make and serve coffee, and Kayla offering a small selection of savoury dishes-her mini quiches were a huge hit. They did a few events, and were even thinking of offering custom cakes if they could hire another baker to help with the load.
Reggie had the orders boxed up and the meringue mixture made, fruit cut up, and all the dry ingredients for the macarons sifted and ready to fold. "How's that icing coming darlin'?"
Julie grinned at him, showing the half dozen different bowls, from coffee to lemon to chocolate icing all ready to go. Plus a smear of the regular buttercream spread across Julie's cheek, tantalizing him. So Reggie went over, kissing the icing off. "Delicious," he said with a wink.
"Reggie!" she giggled. "Not in the kitchen, we agreed!"
They had done that. Especially after Willie caught them covered in the syrup from the bacon pancake cookies, and not much else. He had just smirked and said he wasn't eating any of that batch and left them to it. But still, he loved his wife, and she was sweeter than anything they made back here, so who could blame him?
"Fine," he whined. "But later?"
"We're not using the icing, it took me forever to get out of the sheets last time," Julie replied primly. "But yes, later."
"Love you."
"Love you more," she replied, blowing him a kiss before going back to filling her piping bags while Reggie turned to the lemon curd mixture he'd made last night.
They had all the orders ready plus lots of stuff ready for the day before Willie came in, and he wisely said nothing about their swollen lips and rumbled aprons, but did wink at Reggie as he subtly closed the door to the walk in.
Reggie blushed, bright as a strawberry, and handed Willie a lemon bar to keep him quiet while Julie was busy taking the biscotti from the oven. the barista winked and miming zipping his mouth shut before shoving the bar inside it and giving Reggie a thumbs up.
It wouldn't be too long before the bell above the door would be sounding non stop, but they had earned another break, so once Julie had set down the hot tray, Reggie pulled her in for a sway around the kitchen as their playlist switched to a slower song.
Julie sighed and snuggled in, resting her head against his chest, inhaling the scent of honey, marzipan, and vanilla that always seemed to cling to Reggie. She knew they had lots left to do, but she relished these quiet moments with Reggie before the chaos set in. This was what kept them sane, working together, these moments that were just for them.
"Incoming!" Willie yelled, and they broke apart, smiling, and going back to their stations, playfully hip checking one another as they kept baking.
Sure, sometimes life was hard, and their work life balance was a bit skewed, but they both knew that together? They made life all the sweeter.

BVs costume is pretty decent, actually: the post
Disclaimer: I'm not actually a professional, but I do like to think I'm not completely clueless. Also, I haven't written analysis like this in literal years.
Anyway, analysis below the cut
Some notes about his color:
-The color of his costume is a really good question. Depending on the lighting he can look purple or blue or even black. Color picking a neutral value in neutral lighting puts his base color right in the middle of blue and purple.
-However, I like him being blue more, so I’ll refer to him as blue.
-It really doesn’t matter though, as his base color really is best described as either a bluish-purple or a purplish-blue.
Anyway, let's get right into the analysis.
Overall, the goal of changing BVs design was to make him look more like a smooth talking gangster, and all of my points are about how his design achieves this goal. I’m not here to compare him to CBs costume, they’re trying to communicate totally different things, and comparing them wouldn’t really achieve much. (But just fyi, CBs costume really is just, *chefs kiss*, perfect little clown boy)
His color really is the most obvious thing about him. For a red caboose he sure doesn’t have a lot of red. Sure, but the change in base color is just strengthening his personality. The darker color makes him stand out less, fitting his more shady personality, and the blue makes sure that his red pieces and pinstripes still pop.
See how the stripes pop against the blue better compared to the red, even though they’re the same value?
Tumblr media
And the stripes. The stripes have gone from just representing wood panels, to looking more like actual pinstripes, with the dark base and lighter stripes. This reinforces the idea that he’s more of a gangster, more specifically the smooth talking kind.
The red in the red caboose is now mainly limited to his hat, shoulder pieces, chest piece, gloves and shoes. Most of his red being near his face guides the eyes towards it, making his face stand out even without flashy makeup. His gloves and shoes could have been black, but I think them being red brings a nice balance (and his red shoes do look rather dapper!).
The shoulder pieces don’t resemble a caboose shape in the slightest, but Starlight Express isn’t too concerned with accuracy to real life. And neither am I, as long as it serves a good purpose. Trapezoidal shoulder pieces are sleek, and remind me of the padded shoulders of certain zoot suits, once again reinforcing the gangster theme. And, from the back, especially at an angle, the pieces form a sleek caboose shape.
His hat can look a bit goofy I admit, but it does heavily depend on who is wearing it. Dan has a tendency to pull it down a bit too much, with no skew (though this could possibly be just his hat not fitting too well because it’s damaged). Thankfully most other actors wear it better, making the hat look less goofy.
(L -> R: Dan Ellison, Gary Sheridan, Tom Nihill, Kai Cameron-Jay and Darius James)
Tumblr media
And still speaking about the hat, while the shape isn't quite like a regular caboose cupola, it is pretty close to a more tapered design seen in some Pennsylvania Railroad cabooses!
Tumblr media
Now, for some actual complaints.
-His design is actually a bit empty? I wish he had something more going on, but I have no idea what you could even add.
-His chestpiece looks kinda goofy ngl. But again, I’m not sure what could replace it. A chest box perhaps? Though I have my own personal reasons for not wanting him to have one…
-I wish he had some more silver in him. Perhaps some necklaces attached to his scarf?
-Speaking of, the scarf doesn’t quite fit the theme. Maybe making the costume look more like a suit and making the scarf a high collar instead could work? That’s something for me to ponder about later...
And I think I’ve ran out of juice! Thank you for reading this quick analysis of his costume! Discussion, comments and questions are welcome :)

All the Barbie protagonists I know -from best to worst
I feel like starting with a disclaimer that this is just my opinion, which should be implied. Anyway, this list took forever because I kept switching them. Look I am bad at picking favourites. The top 3 is actually pretty interchangable.
1. Eden Starling (Barbie in a Christmas Carol) - I love her with all my heart and then some. I love her design, her backstory, her personality, how unique she is from every other Barbie on the list. (Whoever came up with Barbie as Scrroge is a genius that deserves an Oscar) The fact that I relate to her in some aspects makes her even more loveable in my eyes. Also I think she deserves #1 spot because out of all the characters on this list she's the one I sorted before even rewatching her movie -and the rewatch confirmed the sorting. She's that memorable!
2. Princess Annika (Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus) - I love her too: her determination, her cleverness, her bravery, her justified anger. The "Destroy Wenlock!" speech alone guaranteed her a place in top 3. The fact that she doesn't back down even in the face of impossible odds - or maybe especially because the odds are impossible, her relationship with Aiden and with Brietta and her passion for ice-skating make her a very interesting character. Annika is a powerhouse and her entire journey is *chef's kiss*.
3. Merliah Summers (Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 1&2) - I think what I love about Merliah is that she put herself first, in both movies. Her first priority was her career as a surfer and only later did she come to accept her role as a mermaid princess. Her relationship with her mother is also great, I love them when they get along and I also love them when they don't - probably my favourite mother-daughter relationship from all the Barbie movies. Merliah's initial skepticism, her putside the box thinking and her competitive streak are delightful. Also her and Kylie might my favourite ship in the Barbieverse.
4. Blair Willows (Barbie Princess Charm School) - A Barbie with actual money problems?! Of course I was soft for Blair from the very begining. Her dedication and love to her adoptive family made her an instant fave. I loved that once Dean Privet helped her with her lessons she did her damn best to graduate from the school. She had her clothes torn, was accused of theft and looked in a safe, yet nothing stopped her.
5. Mariposa (Barbie: Mariposa) - I always had a soft spot for her as a kid. Her desire for adventure -for escape- the way she felt like she didn't quite fit in, her love for books, the somehow-anti-social attitude made her a perfectly relatable character in little!me's eyes. The way she refused to believe the rumors and the stereotypes in the second movie makes her even better. I loved her friendship with Catania and her romance with Carlos was cute too. Also her design might be my second favourite after Eden's.
6. Ro/Princess Rosella (Barbie as The Island Princess) - This movie is a goddamn masterpiece and Ro is a huge part of why. First I cannot help but be impressed by how adaptable she is: not only did she survive on a deserted island for ten years, she thrived. And then she had the courage to leave the only home she knew to go with Antonio and find answers about who she is. My heart ')). Then there is the fact that she risled her own freedom to help save the animals or how she was ready to step back and let Antonio do his duty and marry Luciana despite the fact that she loved him. And the ending wjere she finds her mother and starts singing the lullaby? It is what had cemented my love for this film and this character.
7. Corrine (Barbie in the three Musketeers) - In a lot of ways I find her and Merliah very similar -they both have goals they want to achieve and are somehow selfish because of it in the begining- but I think Corrine is a much kinder person: remember when she got that violin bow for one of the girls as a way to apologize? It felt like such a character establishing moment. I love that she took no shit for anyone, even the prince, and never faltered for one second in her desire to be a musketeer.
8. Princess Genevieve (Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses) - In a lot of ways she reminds me of Blair as she's a quieter personality but forceful in her own way. The way she always stood up for her younger sisters, her love for dancing, her relationship with her father and the fact that she was so heart-eyes when it came to Derek -seriously I don't think any other Babrie was so smitten with her LI from the very first moment- made sure she'll have a place in top 10. The only reason why she's not higher is because I love the others more.
9. Princess Annelisse (Barbie as Princess and the Pauper) - I think my favourite thing about Annelisse is that she completely understood her duties as a princess and was ready to sacrifice her personal happiness for her people. I also really like how she never shied from using her royal status- even if it didn't really work- or how she still tried to help the other taylor with the work when she was thought to be Erica, pity she had zero skill. Her relationship with her mom is my second favourite after Merliah-Calissa. Also collecting rocks is such an unique hobby AND she's a cat girl. Of course I love her.
10. Erika (Barbie as Princess and the Pauper) - Another cat girl! And so snippy and unafraid to be herself. Her dynamic with Annelisse is gold: Erika had all the reasons to despise Annelisse but instead clearly ~bonded with her from the very first moment and went along with an insane plan just to help her. Not to mention, she's the first Barbie who explicitly said "I am gonna fulfill my dreams and have the guy I love; what's this nonsense about choosing only one?" and I have to appreciate her for it.
11. Rapunzel (Barbie as Rapunzel) - The fact alone that she is best friends with a dragon gives her major points in my books. Her love of painting and the way she used it as a literal way of escape? Go, girl! The fact that she refused to let Stefan tell her his name just to make sure Gothel won't find out? Impressive and so spiteful! And the disgust in her voice when she realized Gothel had kept her prisoner for years because her father hadn't married her? Perfect.
12. Kristyn Farraday (Barbie in the Pink Shoes) - I really liked her enthusiasm for getting to actually be the characters she didn't even get to dance in the real world, the way her mind immediately internalized the rules of the fairytale-esque world despite how insane it was and how she refused to conform to the rules. I see the movie as an exploration of Kristyn's creepling fear of failure and the pressure she felt as a proffesional ballet dancer and seeing her come out triumphant on her own terms felt really good.
13. Actress!Barbie (Fashion Fairytale and Fairy Secret) - Probably the most three-dimensional of the "real" Barbies. I think what I like most at her is her determination to save Ken in the second movie. What can I say, I love a Barbie-in-shining-armour. I also like that she knew when to step back and let others do their jobs - in fact she doesn't so much in the first movie, just motivates people. If I had to pick a Barbie to have as a friend, I think she'll be my first choice. She seems like a good listener and someone who knows how to solve problems.
14. Elina (Barbie: Fairytopia 1&2&3) - She is an interesting character and one whose stories I do like, but something never clicked for me when it comes to Elina. Buut, this doesn't mean I don't appreciate her desire to save everyone or how she never drowned in self-pity when she was the only fairy without wings.
15. Clara (Barbie in the Nutcracker)- Clara doesn't get the chance to do much, but I love the glimpses of her intelligence we see (how she figured out the Nutcracker is Eric) or how she longs for adventure and excitment.
16. Thumbelina (Barbie present Thumbelina) - I like that she's an inventor and that she is ready to use Mackena to save her home, but overall I found her unimpressive.
17. Liana (Barbie and the Diamond Castle) - I always had a grudge on her as a child on Alexa's behalf. I always felt like Liana dragged her down. This being said, Liana is still a super smart cookie and very devoted to her friends so she avoids being even lower on the list.
18. Princess Lumina (Barbie: Pearl Princess) - The most memorable things about her are how she loooved having a job and how she refused to condemn the woman that may have raised her but had also kidnapped her from her family. Now both these traits should make her an intriguing character, unfortunately the movie is pretty boring and it never taps into Lumina's potential.
19. Princess Alexa (Barbie and the Secret Door) - Look I relate to her: Lover of books? Check. Desire to escape your life full of rules? Check. Not good with people? Check. But Alexa's development was so weird, the movie was very boring and felt like it had no trajectory and it affected the protagonist a lot.
20. Odette (Barbie in Swan Lake) - She just...doesn't do much. I wish we have seen her more involved in her own story. Not to mention I really didn't understand why she was so afraid of being in the spotlight or how being turned into a swan helped her get over it.
21. Starlight!Barbie (Barbie: Star Light Adventures) - I think my opinion of her -and the whole movie- can be summed up in the world "meh". There is simply no spark of life here.
22. Teen!Barbie (Barbie Diaries) - I have such an overwhelming repulsion towards "unpopular" girls wanting the be popular. Especially since I cannot see what exactly is holding Babrie back from being happy? She seems to have everything (great friends, nice life, good grades and music talent!), but doesn't care about any of it. Not to mention, she's the only Barbie who has to settle for a guy that was pining for her while she only saw him as a friend and I resent that.

WELCOME ABOARD THE INFERNO X,  hope your trip goes smoothly...
firstly, i want to thank everyone who applied. there’s been some real gifts in this bunch and i had to do a lot of thinking when picking these apps. even if you weren’t accepted, know that i did not read a single bad app today. they were all phenomenal. i certainly had my work cut out for me.
to those of you down below who are accepted. welcome! i’m so excited to start this crazy journey with you. you have 24 hours to send in your account. if you can’t make it then, please message me. you also have the option to send in your discord before sending in your account. we can get chatting as soon as you’d like but you still need to follow the 24 hour rule for accounts.
take a look at the check page. follows will be released once we have 80% of the accounts in.
CONGRATS, CLAIRE, you’ve been accepted for CELESTIAL
wow can i get a space mom?  this was such a blessing to read and my heart absolutely goes out for huxley. a comeback story is really one for the books and while maybe she comes from a super affluent family, she’s a woman of science and i love her for it. plus with her family back on earth but her devotion to her craft, i am really excited to see those two things play out with the plot, and see the kinds of choices she’ll make.
CONGRATS, ALLIE, you’ve been accepted for COMET
can a gal just take some notes in peace?  no. she can’t. and boy am i excited to experience her reactions when shit starts going south and this very much is not the mission to just snap some pics and take some notes. of course, even if she wants to just keep her head down, she’s still a bad bitch! good for her! now i just wanna see that Bad Bitch Come Out.
CONGRATS, BUCKY, you’ve been accepted for DARK MATTER
being selfless isn’t cute? damn what a hot take.  and i’m here for that honestly. love that the alien babe is out here like that. of course, i loved everything about william and you captured so beautifully his desire and love for things out of this world, even if maybe he’s never had the pleasure of going out to space himself. i really am excited to see how things will go once he gets off that shit rock, and starts seeing alien life forms in person.
CONGRATS, YANG, you’ve been accepted for EQUNOX
pandora said ?? i’m baby??  but the fact is, she’s trying not to be baby and i love that so much. nothing puts a damper on your shit than being the first ever successful & perfected designer baby in known history. this app really was a beautiful story to read about some kid who didn’t ask for any of this shit and was a gift to god and now just wants to be their own human being and you know what?? i hope pandora gets it.
CONGRATS, DIVYA, you’ve been accepted for NEPTUNE
everyone’s gotta have a narc friend.  but the best kind of narc friend. juna’s story was a wild fucking ride to go on and of course she deserves better than what she got. but you also explored the aspect of being a co-captain that i’ve always found really interesting. there’s a lot that rides on being a captain and it just didn’t work for her. but that’s alright bc she’s going to co-cap the fuck out of that ship and i can’t WAIT for everything to get wild for her.
CONGRATS, SUMMER, you’ve been accepted for PENUMBRA
step on me. that’s it.  mila had a really striking story that i just could not get over. we see many people in this timeline who have really had to fight for where they are, and she’s not an exception to that, but her struggle with following family traditions, and being true to herself was powerful. i think it’ll be especially powerful given this group. i am really excited to see her interact with the others who maybe followed the path she was always meant to.
CONGRATS, CORY, you’ve been accepted for PENUMBRA (omega)
protecc. at all. costs.  i never excepted penumbra to get five apps, and i spent a long while debating the two. and then i thought, this is my swamp. of course, we can figure out the logistics of having two engineers but i figure, it’s a big ship. orion really was such a gem, and so different from the rest of the people on the team, i really wanted him to come along on the adventure. some of the things you mentioned in his biases also got me really excited for gameplay and his choices when things start to go wrong, and i can’t wait for them to come into play.
CONGRATS, D, you’ve been accepted for SATURN
it’s captain america ft. marital issues.  i’d def be interested to see if that could plat out on dash, and if anyone would be interested. but aside from that little fact, i think nico is an excellent captain. especially with your added sprinkle of being on inferno ix, an extra little spicy detail. and a bitch aint scared of death. i respecc that.
CONGRATS, JENN, you’ve been accepted for STARLIGHT
cue the new york vc: SALLY BERN?  i see you. i see what you’ve done. this app was spectaculat. i read this on the plane today and was kind of shook ten thousand miles in the air it was a bit of a hazard. glad i made it out okay because now i get to see echo interact on a ship. your little lowkey fact about them being impressionable is so exciting to me and i know i’m so biased to androids and they all make me sweat, i can feel the development of this one is going to be *chefs kiss*

As a companion to what I posted last night, here are all of the games I played this year! I’m not ready to pick a favorite yet, but you can probably draw your own conclusions from this list.
First, the games I did manage to finish
Inside is really short but totally wild. A solid if occasionally frustrating platformer that is more about dystopian horror, but like in a quiet way. It uses every second with purpose and is much better for it. I never played much of Limbo, but I think I enjoy the atmosphere of inside much more. It's really scary!!!
i "finished" playing Starlight Stage (as much as one can) this year too. The rhythm game is pretty fun but I'm just so tired of mobage/gacha stuff. It takes up so much time and just makes me stressed. I'm tired. But if you like idol games, and haven't tried it yet I highly recommend! It's a great time to jump in
Hiveswap! You're all probably pretty tired of my Homestuck talk, but it's a great adventure game. I hope future chapters will continue to be fun and creative and silly (and eventually probably break my heart)
Wolfenstein 2: a game that juggles lots of ideas and delivers on most of them. It deserves kudos just for being willing to tackle prickly subjects (like America’s horrific past). The shooting is fun but way too hard. Play it on easy. And no spoilers but the ending sucks, in multiple ways kinda. The set pieces around the midsection just had my jaw on the floor though
It's strange to have a brutal FPS where the story is better than the shooting in some places?
Last for beaten games is Heat Signature (again as much as you can beat a randomly generated roguelike). I am SO into its approach to stealth, where basically you are urged to think on your feet and adapt to changing situation. the simple fact that you can stop time for as long as you want and just think is really great. its less about execution and more about doing the right sequence of events for the situation
Some of my fav game moments came totally unscripted from me taking on a really tough mission and just getting out by the skin of my teeth
Now for the probably really long part, stuff I didn't finish. I'm bad at finishing things (anything) so it's not that I hated these games, but I do generally have more mixed feelings
An older game I played a lot was Burnout 3 and like that game is *chef kiss*. I used to be WAY into racing games, so this really scratched that old itch. It is, dare I say it, the best racing game I've ever played. It strikes that really perfect balance of control and chaos for each race. The AI is super aggressive so have to play offense and defense equally to get ahead. The triumph of getting gold in a difficult race is just exhilarating
I had a specific moment where it was just me and one other guy duking it out for first. He was way ahead after I got in a bad crash so for the final lap I was boosting all the way, cutting every corner, and drifting around every bend to catch up. Then finally just seconds from the checkered line, I nudged him into an oncoming car and finished. I was fucking hooting and hollering in my room at 2 in the morning
The only reason I haven't finished is that there's no real rush to. There's no story to get to, just a larger collection of cars and tracks. It’s always ready for me when I decide to come back
(brief aside) I opened up Burnout Paradise after this and while the open world is really cool to explore (one of the best for driving) it doesn't give me the same adrenaline rush. It’s too easy and the AI is not nearly as vengeful
Night in the Woods I started in like February and have barely touched and I feel SUPER bad about that. It's a good game, but I think I might be kind of afraid to play it... at first I related a LOT, maybe too much, to Mae. As the game goes on and begins to seriously judge her it started to make me seriously uneasy. I'm afraid to confront my problems and it felt like the game was calling me, specifically, out for that. Which I mean the writing must be pretty good then. I’ll get back to it... eventually
Of the games I'm bad at finishing, visual novels are probably at the top of that list just because of how long they are and the relatively low amount of direct participation. but VA-11 Hall-A is really good!!!! It's just a really solid cyberpunk bartending simulator. And Jill is like my favorite protag this year. did you know I had never seen blade runner before this year?
The reason I dropped off a bit is that I had computer problems and lost some saves. I’d need to go through like 2 hours of stuff I already read. but. Words are failing a little bit. The writing is just good y’all
The further I get from Persona 5 the less I'm in love with it. Once you get past the fantastic music and slick graphics... the writing is just kind of bad. Characters feel kind of hollow and it sends really REALLY mixed messages and society and conformity. It could be the script or just the translation but everything just comes out sounding bad. After 100 hours, forgivable flaws just get grating. I'm in the last dungeon and I don't think I'm going to finish it
Just like put a hold on Nier: Automata for me. I've started but I haven't really gotten to the parts where it supposedly kicks into gear. 2B is hot though
Breath of the Wild has got to be like, the pinnacle of open world design right? A lot has been said about Zelda so I’ll skip the main stuff. My favorite thing is how physical your interactions with the world are. The game encourages you to play with its systems and see how they interact. Drop food into a fire to cook it a shocked enemy will drop their gear, water and metal will conduct electricity, tame your horse by riding it and correcting when it veers off the path etc.
I played just a little bit of LISA too. I like its really dark sense of humor, but the game also feels like it is sometimes actively discouraging you to play. It's interesting!!
Lastly is Metal Gear Solid V. I've thought a lot about this game because it succeeds and fails in a lot of weird ways. For now, just know this. The stealth is so good it got me to buy all of the previous games just so I can understand the series better (though I have played MGS 1 before my thoughts are basically the same as this)
The final game I played this year is Super Mario Odyssey literally this morning so I got nothing to say on that one
jesus christ there were so many games in 2017 and yet I'm still going back to ones made years ago
