that being said i WISH there were fics abt liam healing from one :( there are NONE and that is deeply sad . id write it myself (and i technically have done bits and pieces!) but i dont know if id ever upload it cus i dont know if i could do the concept justice!!
#the closest is like#post canon fics where he is happy :)#qnd thats ALSO good!!!#but they arent rly the same idea :(#that and yhe other closest fics are like. a good bit after he gets home#and similarly. these r also a cool ide!#but ALSO not the same thing#howd he get home? whered he go when he does?#does he contact any family? does he contact owen? does he find bryce again?#is his leg still broken? if it is. does that impact where he goes?#after he gets whereever hes going does he try to immediately go back to life as normal or does it take time?#if he contacts the other contestants when does he do this? how do they respond?#etc etc etc#i LOVE extremely specific details and indepth stories that examine a character#both what they do how they do it and WHY they do it#anyway.#god i should rly get like. a talking tag#just. i wanna see him realistically heal :(#bc THATS the hard part and i get WHY ppl dont usually write it bc its hard to convey super complex emotions!!#but also when i see a character and theyre miraculously Better Now (whether it be fully or not) my brain goes ok but how did they get here#and regardless of realism my brain treats it as not as realistic bc idk the steos the character took yknow!!!#and i wanna look at liam and see him recover and it genuinely feel real cus then im like ok phew. hes doing better now :)#ik i say this a lot but. i genuienly dont know if any of this makes sense </3#AND ALSO THIS ISNT ME SAYING I DISLIKE ANY OF THE TYPES OF FICS I MENTIONED#i very much like them i also just rly!!! wanna read something that doesnt seem to exist yet yknow#caps in tags/#ask to tag

id like to hear your ideas please :)
okay so
for starters, my fascination with trading card games has rekindled. and not in the normal way where you go hey i wanna go play that game but in the way where you want to design a whole fucking game from scratch (<= not a good idea when you take a look at how my past ginormous creative projects went)
i have two main ideas for that. the first one would be relatively basic. a creature battler with an all cards as resource system. combat is basically just take the attackers attack stat and if its equal or higher than the opponents creatures defense stat that was targetet, that gets destroyed. if the attack stat was higher, the excess damage can be retargeted to another of the opponents creatures. there are no life points. instead, you win the game by clearing the opponents board of creatures three times in a row. each player has a set of 3 specially prepared creatures outside the deck acting as shields. each time ones board is cleared, you get to put the next shield in line onto the board so your board isnt empty anymore. the game starts off with the first shield of each player already put onto the board.
the other is a little more nonstandard. the goal here is to reach some number of victory points before your opponent does. you gain these points by making the cards you put onto the board do some once-per-turn action equal to the cards point-gain stat. you can however also similarly make your cards steal the other players points, replacing the usual point-gain action, stealing as many points from the opponent as the cards point-steal stat. a card can only gain or steal per turn. if you made a card perform neither action during your turn, it instead can protect your point stash during the opponents next turn, reducing how many points an opponents card would steal with one action by your cards point-protect stat.
okay those were the tcg ideas
now, conlanging
im still (very passively) working on my big protolanguage to make all these different daughter languages later on. for these daughters i largely dont have any concrete ideas yet but a bunch of misc sound changes that could lead to them that im gonna put here (mostly those that i havent noted down somewhere else before because if i did all this would take forever and im lazy)
-q ɢ→qʀ̥ ɢʀ→kʟ̝̥ gʟ̝→cʎ̝̥ ɟʎ̝→tɬ ʎ
-q ɢ→qʀ̥ ɢʀ→ʀ̥ ʀ→r
-P̥→P̥ʰ/_V; P̬P̥ʰ→P̬ʱ; P̥P̬→P̥
-r→ɻ; ɻ{t d s l n}→ʈ ɖ ʂ ɭ ɳ; ɻ→∅/_C
-g→ɣ→x; xz xv→xʃ xf; x→∅
-p b kʷgʷ → f v p b
none of these are necessarily in one daughterlang or the other those were just some that i thought were kinda cool.
one last thought that i had thats not related to either of those is what if there was like. an anglerfish pokemon. but with the sexual dimorphism of real life anglerfish. and maybe the females could even evolve where the males are fused to them.
okay that was all i think thanks for listening and sorry for the wall of text

So, how did you end up stumbling into Monogatari as a series? And who would you say was your Favorite character before Ougi filled that spot? I'd love to ask more about Ougi but, y'know, personal spoilers and all.
oh oh oh yes i have an answer for this one
actually the answer to both is nadeko!! you are right that ougi is my all time fave but nadeko was acc my fave before them and still holds my second place slot!! talking about it below with spoiler talks of otorimonogatari
similarly to you i stumbled upon it in my teens like a while back. my first impression was like the memes and stuff of course with renai circulation and what not. which led to me seeing a comparison video of renai circulation and mousou express, which is super interesting and cool even without context. and scary for that matter mousou express is kind of terrifying. it leaves an incredibly lasting impression, and it certainly did on me back then. of course it helped that i like the songs too. i also saw a clip of her in medusa form which was intriguing (and also i love the design of it). this on its own though was not enough to get me to watch. actually no wait i think i tried to watch it but the order was so confusing that i started with like nise by accident somehow and i had no idea what was going on so i quit lmao. but i was still curious about the series partly due to nadeko and partly bc it was like one of those big shows that you hear about yk
then fast forward a while, i hear the kizumonogatari movies r comin out so im like fuck it lets watch even tho i have no context. luckily they turned out to be prequel stories and my experience was not totally ruined by this move lol. of course, they were really good, those movies are amazing. so now i was like more invested in the story, but only by a little bit more. the final push i needed to actually try to watch (again) was ultimately because i was so curious about nadeko. tbh she was also the reason why i finished the series in the first place. monogatari on first watch for me was overwhelming and very dense (i mean, its a dense show), and before otori i actually wasn't enjoying it like a LOT, especially not with all the weird bits the series likes to throw at you. not to say that i disliked it, it just wasn't like amazing to me. of course now i feel differently and love the early parts of the series very much too, but first watch was slightly rough at times and took me a while to complete. learning what was gonna happen with nadeko was a big motivating factor for me.
but then when i acc got to otori i was like HOLY SHIT ITS ME lmao. i mean id already liked nadeko the best from the very little id seen of her and the fuzzy spoiler memory of vaguely what was going to happen in her arc. but man otori was so good and resonated with me so much, every single moment of it was so gripping to me. i loved the stark contrast in nadeko's perspective from araragi's (esp noticeable in how she sees her classmates), how it's already set up at the very beginning as a story where she Gets Worse so there's a feeling of profound dread surrounding it, her outburst at school (my jaw actually dropped at the "shut up!" i was so shocked and then hyped lol), just like everything about kuchinawa, the incredible ost (not to mention that op of course). ougi actually did contribute to the enjoyment bc she brought up such interesting ideas at the beginning and is generally such an enigma, but shes not the focus here right now i just cant help but bring up ougi in any situation. but yeah otori hands down one of my favorite arcs, one of the ones i still go back to rewatch frequently for the profound effect it had on me and the comfort it brings
its like what you were talking about with hanekawa. nisioisin truly did an incredible job with his characterization to make so many very true-to-life and nadeko is absolutely no exception, she is very relatable to me. i've got a lot of experience in life being shy, quiet, socially anxious, generally anxious lol (although not anymore!), and as 'the sweetheart who can do no wrong', so it's very much nadeko's specific brand of avoidance and like... 'outward-facing personality management' that resonates with me, if that makes sense. i was completely aligned with her during that whole watchthrough of otori in terms of feeling how she felt. i was seeing myself reflected back at me from the screen lol. of course we have lots of differences too but the similarities were really capturing to me on my first watch through and kinda catapulted me to finish the rest. her later appearances only added onto my appreciation of her too. i'll leave it there though since you don't know so much about that yet. when u get there ill probably have more to talk about. but shes a wonderful character love her very much.
also. ghh. i wish i could say more about ougi. you have no idea. im so curious to see what you will think of them. im practically vibrating with how much i want to talk about them (a constant state of being for me). but i wont say anything yet. i will be Hush...

THANK YOU FOR THE PLAYLISTS THEY ALL LOOK LIKE THEY SLAP INCREDIBLY HARD !!!!!!! I WILL STREAM THAT SHIT. also thank u for the bisexual lighting songs that is Also a fantastic list. i’ve seen your posts about synesthesia and i think the way you perceive the world is so damn cool !!! i don’t have actual synesthesia the way you do but sometimes voices really do have colors that suit them idk okay they just Do. but srsly though i love seeing you talk abt how you perceive sounds and colors it’s all so interesting!!
loona rly does have some Shit going on i sat down w my friend jack and i was like “okay can you explain at least some of this story” and he just went “okay so first off heejin is god-“ AND I WAS LIKE “WHAT???” i understand a good amount of it now but it’s rly so unhinged
i remember you reblogging gyehyeon gifsets in the very beginning !! he rly is so pretty. i may end up going the same way w e’last because choiin,,,, that man. Whew. he is . very very attractive .
i am also not entirely sure about noa?? i think i read something about him being able to control shadows/darkness and i think . it would be Very funny . if he just caused a power outage in decelis because he didn’t want to go to class that day. just boom it’s dark in all the classrooms suddenly. on a similar note, imagine an Actual power outage due to storms or something (i live in a beach town, we get outages from hurricanes frequently </3) and jino being used as a human flashlight bc he can literally light up the rooms. just fun little thoughts
- vrvr anon, who is very touched that you make all your followers feel welcome and represented even if you’re not part of that group itself <3
ehehehe ywc!! and also thank you im glad u think my rambly posts abt people and sound and colors r cool :> i like the way my mind sees things i think its pretty cool too!! its especially fun when im first getting into a group and my brain slowly starts assigning colors to the members like "okay ur gold and ur red and ur this very specific shade of purple and—"
"okay first off heejin is god" bro???? what a WILD fuckin sentence to hear first thing when being introduced to a group's lore wow. i mean i knew their lore was a LOT but i never bothered to look into exactly HOW it was a lot, i just knew that it WAS. but heejin god??? really??? good for her. its nice that u have a friend that was so willing to sit down and explain all that to u dhfjhfjf (altho to be fair id probably be the same with enha or vrvr lore lol) (kinda like your asks when you first explained the vrvr lore to me actually!!)
yea gye!! i honestly dont entirely remember the progression of how i got into vrvr, even tho it was only a couple weeks ago . like i think i mightve seen ONE gye gifset on my fyp or smth at first, then i decided to go into the gye tag to reblog more bc i thought he was pretty, then i remembered liking get away and O a lot so i figured "why not listen to their other tts?" and then came YOUR asks and now im . well. now im here HSJFBFJFB
NO SERIOUSLY WITH CHOIIN i think it went pretty similarly for me too ..... i didnt know e'last all that well but i thought he was pretty (its the expressions when he dances i swear--) and i liked their music and now im a full-blown stan with like three biases hgsjfhfjhdhf
i think ive heard abt noa maybe manipulating shadows somewhere too-- like a mutual told me abt it or something idk. that sounds like an absolutely badass and potentially terrifying power to have but also the idea of him just using it to cause power outages so he doesnt have to go to school is great-- AND YES FLASHLIGHT JINO. that is a brilliant idea with lots of potential for things being burned down by accident (like he sets the entire school library on fire or smth and shion is like "well at least we can SEE now" while hes just crying.)

OFFAL HUNT REMASTERED LIVEBLOG // CHAPTER 17
IN THIS EPISODE OF CRYING CAT GALLERY:
“Nice?” Cinder laughed under her breath once, and returned to examining her threads. “Oh, come on, Glynda. Favor isn’t in my vocabulary, remember? It’s just a shame about your cape. The emblem looked good, and your new outfit would look much better with it. That’s all.”
CINDER FALL IS REALLY BAD AT NOT BEING GAY ON MAIN
we’re bacc baby B) let’s hop right in
When Glynda awoke from her dream of being consumed,
alright calm down we’ve literally JUST started we’ve literally JUST woken up can we chill Out,
“Cinder?” she yawned, surveying the room.
sneak peek of that Sweet Domestic Life we dream of once this enemies-to-lovers malarkey reaches the ‘lovers’ bit but no we’re just surrounded by enemies. two of them being the writers!
Still, she couldn’t go wandering around Cinder’s apartment in only her underwear, but rooting through the drawers and closet didn’t seem—
STEAL HER CLOTHES BABY!!!! PRACTICALLY MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The clothes didn’t seem Cinder’s size or style; they were casual and soft, a black t-shirt and steel-gray sweatpants.
okay but the idea of cinder getting up and being like ‘do i have ANYTHING this Unit of a woman will fit into’ and like actually having to think abt it and then folding em up and leaving em there like ‘hope she finds em okay’????? peak. absolutely peak. shes so gay but does she know it? no,
The fabric had enough give to make it work, even if only barely, and she looked in the mirror to see the loungewear looking more like tight athletic wear. Funny that.
kc and diesel envisioning this: oh yes. oh YES. ohhohughohguhghuhu yessssssssss--
She had—trusted? Been trusted? She had told Cinder fragile little things, and had heard similarly earnest words in return. It had been strange. Nice.
i love glynda like. feeling out of the edges of her own comfort and Pleasant Feelings with this almost-wariness? like every word she uses to describe it just Edges a little closer to Softness but she has to taste the word first to see if it fits. her narration is SO fun 2 read yall what the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
This was Cinder’s house. It wasn’t just any house. These were Cinder’s belongings, Cinder’s resting places, and she was wandering around without Cinder.
Voyeuristic was putting it mildly. Glynda needed to find Cinder, fast.
HJGDKJGHDFSSDF GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! glynda just. losing it at such LITTLE THINGS is so goddamn funny jesus christ. this is cinders house!!! her THINGS!!! fuck she NAPS IN HERE. SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
god i love how soft this is. i know exactly why this is happening and i know exactly how [REDACTED], but i’m living for this moment. living IN it.
Spread out on the table was a wanted poster with a mugshot of Cinder on it, defaced with black permanent marker and crease marks.
cinder: yeah they didnt get the eyebrows sharp enough and im mad abt it
“Well, your clothes are in the wash.” Cinder said, turning around, coffee in hand. It was so…domestic. “It would help if you had more than one set.”
shouting from a distance: you two should get MARRIED
“You’ve been wearing the same dress the entire time I’ve known you.”
look at these lil JABS... the JESTS... the JOQUES... i cant believe theyve been married 10 years already. im also deeply enjoying how very indulgent this section is. I Am Seeing,
Glynda scoffed, and when Cinder reached for the sugar on the counter, she gave it a subtle nudge with her Semblance. It slid out of Cinder’s reach.
JESUS CHRIST LOOK AT THIS WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! soulmates.
Cinder shrugged, still looking elsewhere. “Mercury thought it was funny.”
“Mercury?”
cinder: my son and BOY. and, one day, yr son and boy, tho he won’t take it lying down.
Cinder scoffed. “You just don’t appreciate my good tastes.”
i feel like the evidence is truly stacking up to very much prove this statement wrong but u kno what lets let her figure that one out for herself
“A souvenir from the brats,” she said. “And a letter excusing the mess they made of the place.”
KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS
She said, “I just didn’t know you had kids.”
KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS
“It’s fine,” said Cinder tersely, but not harshly. “It isn’t wise to advertise in my business, so keep it to yourself.”
KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOD YES that little like... indirect admittance that em and merc r basically her own kids is a fucking BLESSING from ON HIGH are you SEEING THIS SHIT????????????? we have been fed today. my crops r watered and my lambs bouncing over the green fields as we feast. what a moment. wow. what a chapter.
When Cinder finally finished hers and rose to get another cup, Glynda allowed some of her thoughts to solidify. She said, “I want new clothes.”
as a side note, i think it rly shows the strength of the writing that the feeling of the narrative can change so much, esp when u take into consideration that we jump between the points of view of TWO characters? like with cinder we’ve gone from sheer fury to gruesome sickness, and with glynda we’ve gone from Complete Dissociation to this gentle and soft morning and you can feel it absolutely fluffing up in every word! still love how good the writing in this fic is its NUTS
Cinder shrugged. Her usual clothes were still in the wash; right now, she was wearing high-waisted black pants and a loose top tucked in.
diesel i want you to know im thinking abt what u said abt the high-waisted pants mods in sims 4 and im giggling
The necklace with Glynda’s earring hung from her throat.
i didnt mention it before but this is the... second time this chapter its been explicitly mentioned? and i know we could be like ‘ah the MEANING’ but honestly im like glynda r u rly not over the bobbies y
“You aren’t dead in there, are you?” came Cinder’s voice.
“No.”
“Well. At this pace, I will be before we get out of here.”
cinder, who probably once spent 7+ hours choosing an outfit: look its only cool if i do it, dipshit,
Unsnapping the lone earring left to her, she brought it to her collar and fixed it there, under the clasped button to dangle just over her sternum.
When she stepped out of the changing room, Cinder looked up. A slow dawn of interest eclipsed the boredom on her face. Glynda stood very still as her gaze flowed up and down again, pausing over the earring.
Cinder touched the matching one hanging from her own neck, almost in surprise. She cleared her throat. Her tone was very deliberately mocking: “Cute.”
Tumblr media
OOOOOOOOOOOH MY GOD are we for SERIOUS right now??? jesus christ. jesus christ. we’ve moved on past married now this is ride-or-die shit right here what the FUCK. jesus CHRIST. theres- i- i have THOUGHTS on this matter that are spoilery and so i will SIT ON THIS EGG but HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT
“Nothing,” Cinder said, smoothing her expression into something unreadable. “I was just thinking—nevermind.”
Tumblr media
no, no, go on, speak yr mind, please do, because if u were abt to offer to embroider that shit then PLEASE say it aloud for the audience at home
“If I was a cop, you’d already be in jail.”
“You’re welcome to try to take me in, darling.”
im sure its obvious but im BESIDE myself @ this flirting. im losing it. this is SUCH a treat and i KNOW that [REDACTED] [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] but AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
“That’s because of your—” Cinder was already gone. Glynda pressed her lips together, but watched her go. Rolling her eyes, she finished, “—Grimm tattoos.”
Whatever. She could gloat about figuring it out later.
/CHOKES
WHAT
@kc and diesel: CALL ME RIGHT NOW WHAT THE FUCK
okay okay. wait. okay. wait. theres. wait. okay. i cant. am i safe to say anything. probably not. so. im not gonna. but. you WILL be seeing me in dms, friends,
okay okay im moving on im gonna. keep going. okay. okay. im going. (but i will be in dms)
there was a brief discussion of dinner: namely, that neither of them wanted to make it.
oh god why is this me
“Give me your new cape.”
“What?”
Finally looking up, Cinder said, “Your cape. Let me have it, and I’ll put your emblem on it.”
THANK YOU MA’AM AND THANK YOU FOR READING THE FIC HAS ENDED ITS ALL OVER WITH!!!!!! WE DID IT!!!!!!! WE RODE THIS WHOLE TRAIN TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNFORTUNATELY IF ONLY IT WERE SO EASY.
Glynda ignored it for the time being and sent the vector of her emblem to Cinder.
i deeply love the idea of all hunters and huntresses carrying a vector of their emblem JUST IN CASE,,, SMTHNG HAPPENS,,, its right alongside the list of their next of kin and their will and testament,
Cinder Fall was a name built on Dust and money and extravagant demonstrations.
But Cinder Fall was also a woman with a family. A home. A favorite blend of coffee.
Tumblr media
this is absolutely kicking me in the dick for reasons i cant say but also for reasons of SNOFT because oh my god. this is. like. this is why i rly vibe w. cinder in this fic and is also like one of my favourite characterisations of cinder of ALL TIME (which is why all my fav cinder fics typically have it as a Theme). shes SO good and SO dimensional and i just. god. GOD. i LOVE HER!!!!!!!!! ID DIE FOR HER!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA CINDER FALL IS MY ANGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL
It felt like being told a secret, like being told a thousand secrets, and not knowing what to do with them. All she could do was hold them in her palms, delicate as she could, trying not to break anything.
GIMME ARMS TO PRAY WITH INSTEAD OF ONES THAT HOLD TOO TIGHTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /goes apeshit
And because of that, Glynda asked, “Do you have any more stories?”
Without looking up, Cinder drawled, “About Witches?”
“Or dragons.”
Gold flickered her way.
👈😳👈
“They’d already been built by the Witches that came before her,” Cinder replied. “But she’d been a headmaster at one of them, and a teacher before that.”
Something in Glynda’s chest gleamed.
lore lore lore lore LORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lets GET THAT LORE as i peer blearily thru tears,
“...You haven’t just been pretending not to remember things, have you?”
firstly: called out lmao JHGSDFKJHGFSD and SECONDLY:
“The moon?” Cinder made a face. “I’m not sure if it’s that literal. Your soul is powerful, but it’s not a physical thing. Besides, the moon is…”
“Broken,” Glynda finished for her.
“Yeah.”
hm what a fascinating thing hm how interesting hm hm HMMMM 👈🤔👈
Even as they ate, they both seemed lost in their own heads, but somehow, to Glynda, it seemed perfectly clear that both of them were wondering the same thing.
wait glynda. hey glynda. did u uh. ever. did u uh. text winter back or w
WE DID IT CHAPTER 17!!!!!!!!!!! this was a Lot (4,500 words? yall better be careful before those 10k chapters return to Haunt Us) and was also, a Lot. holy shit. theres. i. id make a spoiler edition but tbh its just the SAME SPOILER thats like. rly driving this chapter. i know what its for. i know it. i feel it. dont trust winter more like dont trust the writers
ANYWAY I LOOK FORWARD (?) EAGERLY (???) to chapter 18, unsure when the vibes will turn rancid for the worse. when. honey. theres a big storm coming.

fav ♀-releases in 2018 (in no particular order)
so, since i started this list like this last year too, here we go: i know little to nothing about music, i have weird (may i say b a d) taste and my reasonings are - as expected from a subjective list - Super personal ,, also i dont follow every female k-artists so there are definitely blind spots for me too! that said ... LETS GET GAY! LETS GO LESBIANS!
Wind (바람 ) - Heize
suprise surprise, its Heize again. i was rarely this excited about a comeback this year as i was about Wind ... i adore this mini. i really love Heize’s voice, especially now that she is playing around with rapping And singing more than ever, its just ,, i hear her voice and i just, immediately calm down and feel a warm glow in me rising and --- this is getting really cheesy, isn’t it.
my fav tracks have to be Sorry and wish you well (feat. DAVII), however i can listen to this whole album without a problem - of course Jenga as the title was amazing as well, Dahye’s voice works really well with Gaeko’s as well. additionally i loved the ~design for this album, the photoshoot is stunning and the whole aesthetic is very much up my alley.
AND SINCE WE R ALREADY TALKING ABOUT DAHYE:
+ First Sight (첫눈에) - Heize
as expected, i love her winter single release as well. again, a Lovely mixture of her singing and a solid very groovy amazing rapping part. i did like her mini a lot more lyricwise (lots of it is really sad but Sorry has such smart lyrics!!!), however as a “”simple”” winter release that is meant to fit this season, this is amazing.
...... also have i mentioned how Beautiful she is, jfc.
Deine - Ha:tfelt
Oh Boy. Here we go.
this is hands-down my Favorite Release of this whole year. i don’t know if its clear, but i adore yeeun. i adore her as the person park yeeun, who is an activist and very outspoken about her position of a woman in the industry, her experiences in one of the most successful girlgroups Ever, her views on feminism and sexism, the fact that she collabed with a drag organizer for her exhibition, etc etc etc. however, i also love yeeun as Ha:tfelt and adore her music. Pluhmm is such a sensual, fun and soft and yet strong song about her Own Desires and a woman that Wants to flirt and be in love and have fun and Be sensual and its so so so lovely and warm and playful and confident? i died a little at the MV because Ha:tfelt is a Woman and is portrayed as such, she is sensual and sexy and its portrayed by yeeun dancing around a flat in the sexiest dress and feeling herself and. its just Wonderful. so wonderful. i love her. Cigar is super touching too, very smooth and slick and polished and yet it has a vulnerable touch to it and is just ,, such a good song ....... thank u yenny.
Warning - Sunmi
ANOTHER AMAZING WOMAN. if i had to choose a soloist that is more active and actively promotes and performs on music and award shows etc, i’d definitely go for Sunmi. first of all: sunmi is outstandingly hardworking, talented, tough, brave, but also so so so kind and sweet and self-aware (seriously her twitter account is my social media highlight of this year, she is beyond ADORABLE and wonderful and funny) and of course she is fucking beautiful. this album is AMAZING - i can listen to the whole tracklist without skipping a single song. i adore Siren (aesthetically its my favorite title track of hers, though i do think Gashina is a little more catchy, esp together with that choreo - but i Love Siren’s horror-esque MV with the, well, siren-mermaid-imagery, so good!) but personally my favorite SONGS are ADDICT and Black Pearl - both sound very different actually, one being completely in English, but it just shows how well Sunmi can pull of different styles. god ... have u seen her on stage? shes a m a z i n g.
KHAN - I’m Your Girl ?
I started following Euna and Minju already before they debuted ... but what really made me fall in love with both their voices, be it singing or rapping (cause both are quite good at both ,,) was their DNA cover! generally the fact that they keep posting really cool covers on their youtube channel is beyond lovely and these two really managed to make me like a version of DNA ... (probably my least favorite BTS title track, lmao ,,)
their actual debut was just lovely. the song is great, soothing and super smooth and groovy and easy to listen to, their voices are stunning in it, the MV is VERY GAY, the choreo is fun and their outfits for promotion stages were such a lovely fresh wind and i really enjoyed seeing them perform a LOT. i just really like that KHAN already is quite unique and m so so so looking forward to future comebacks!
BBIBBI - IU
no highlight list without Jieun. the lyrics to this track were solely written by her and it shows - IU is an outstanding songwriter, i adore her hard work and experience and talent. the sound of the track itself is fun and bubbly and groovy and Very catchy, but my highlight is how this conflicts so beautifully with the lyrics that are quite ... critical and rough and basically show a very very sweet lovely middle finger to the rumour-netizen-culture around her ,, i am super excited for future full releases from jieun, though i still listen to Palette a lot and think she should take all the time she needs!
Bad Boy - Red Velvet
sadly, i didnt not really enjoy Red Velvets later release this year and neither did i really dig their summer release, but what i do adore to the moon and back is their The Perfect Red Velvet - The 2nd Album Repackage, though thats a lil bit of cheating since i already mentioned their Perfect Velvet album last year ,,
Bad Boy is my favorite title track of theirs this year, the styling is OUTSTANDINGLY GOOD MY GOD and the sound is just, smooth and cool and sexy and just ... damn.
also, Red Velvet definitely has some of my favorite jacket photoshoots of this year, the quality and beauty of their photos is amazing, i could spend hours just looking at those ......... and maybe i did.
What Is Love? - TWICE
the nations girl group powered through this year and released so many catchy awesome songs that i had a hard time choosing one ,, but What Is Love is definitely my MV highlight of the year and also the song itself is so so fun and lovely and cheerful and just makes me feel happy ... thank u for making me happy, TWICE!
You And I - Dreamcatcher
i have to admit: Dreamcatcher is not really my sound. their tracks remind me a little too much of Very Loud Stressful Anime Openings, so i accept that its just not my music taste ,, HOWEVER i actually really really like You and I. the song is very catchy and has this one part right before the chorus that i really love, its a very cool mysterious “dark” awesome track. moreover though i love the Whole Package that is Dreamcatcher (again, this horror-esque style of theirs is Really Up My Alley) - their styling and choreos are so clever and SEXY and goth-y and different, its just so fucking fun to watch them perform, especially the Choreo to You and I is so so so so so cool!
(also they r somewhat of a lesbian cult and m Very Appreciative of that, my god.)
LOOΠΔ - just, the whole thing.
SO - it took me until this year to really get into Loona. i knew them beforehand and was intrigued by the unique pre-debut “schedule” that their company was doing and checked out some songs but never got into them deeper. however, this year i truly listened to the Broad Amazing Variety that Loona offers and i just Have to include them here. all the girls and the subunits are super interesting and diverse and i love how especially the solo songs all sound different and lots of things were tried out and the AESTHETICS ARE OFF THE CHARTS. their full group debut was a little too ... they played it too ~safe for my taste, however i still adore lots of LOONA songs and can only recommend them!
(my favs are So Boring, i love Egoist and Heart Attack and Singing in the Rain and New and ... i’ll get back to this once i develop an actual Interesting opinion lmao)
i Can’t possibly end this list without some honorable mentions, because girls are amazing:
- (G)I-DLE are amazing rookies and performers and just such an awesome new girlgroup. Soyeon’s stage presence is just ,, wow, she is such a good rapper and performer, but the other girls are also so amazing and m so glad they are so successful and loved so far. favorite track of this year is def HANN (Alone), though all their songs are mighty good.
- Oh My Girl. maybe i dont listen to their songs as much but m in deep love with their visuals and stages and man ... call me, Yooa, please, m free almost every night.
- fromis_9 had such a cute quirky hyper Love Bomb comeback, i loved it!
- Momoland similarly had such catchy fun songs, i gotta mention them too!
- Hyuna - i love Hyuna and i wish her all the best and happiness and love and success and i hope to see her on stage again soon! (i especially loved her in Triple H, since i was actually quite a fan of that trio and the retro funky sound they went for ...... big sigh @ cube)
- Yubin ... again, not really my sound, but man. kill me Yubin, just do it, cmon.
- EXID is back to OT5! m so happy!!! I Love You was really fun, but I definitely enjoyed DDD last year more ,, but i still wanted to mention them, such a fun, diverse, different girlgroup that offers lots of different sounds and visuals and stands out to me a lot, so so good!
- Chungha ... m still in the process of falling in love with Chungha but oh god .... have u seen her? her dancing skills are out of this world, her beauty is stunning, she is so so sweet and kind and tough and her songs m so eager to properly discover and also a rly niche point but: I LOVE HER ALBUM DESIGNS SO SO SO MUCH.
- Minseo is another new amazing soloist ,, i discovered her at first through my fav photographers instagram (@ mu_gung) who took just. outstanding pics of Minseo but i also Adore her voice and she has done Amazing covers as well, her Why So Lonely is my absolute favorite and id dare to say i like it just as much as the original ... check her out, her MV visuals and concepts are Super interesting and beautiful and fun as well!
and many many many many more that i missed or forgot!
just know: girls are the best.

Q&A post with the Mods!!!!
This is going to be a long one oh boy
How strict is the delineation of creative control vis-a-vis characters/plays between the mods? (@pedanticlecturer)
We generally have the plays split up along lines of “what we know”— we have a list at the very beginning of the blog. Sometimes we’ll draw the others’ characters (mostly me drawing some of Star’s…) but even then the final say on characterization is up to the “main” mod for that play — mod aster
what aster said -- mod star
What is your favorite play? What is your favorite character in terms of how they were written in the source material? (@pedanticlecturer)
I think my favorite play overall is Macbeth, just because I like the vibes (and the fact that I too could kill Macbeth), the fact that you don’t say it’s name in theatres, and the fact that it’s a play I did a full read through and analysis of in class. Favorite character? Puck from Midsummer. — mod aster
uhhhh,, hmm. ive always had a soft spot for midsummer since i saw it with aster esp bc of how fun the costumes were. of the comedies it has the largest potential to be the most visually pleasing bc of the concept of fairies,,,and im gay and dramatic so i love that. id die if i got to costume design for midsummer,,,or be in it,,,yeah. fav character. hmm. probably mercutio?? i recently saw a version of romeo and juliet where mercutio was played by a woman and oh my god it was amazing!!! not to mention mercutio’s portrayal in baz luhrmann's INCREDIBLE version of r n j!!! (I based my mercutio design on him) he just spends the entire time making dick jokes. love that. -- mod star
How do you answer asks so fast? I mean it's great but I'm impressed 😂 (Anon)
Personally, it’s a mix of: notifications on, quick drawing speed, and using the blog to avoid my class work — mod aster
aster is fast and (as you can see from all of my answers) im lazey -- mod star
Are there any elements/characters of the plays you're covering that you would have liked to work into this blog's plot, but couldn't due to the constraints of the setting or the synthetic nature of the blog? (@pedanticlecturer)
I wanted to make everyone gay but unfortunately due to plot constraints we have to have some hets but that wont stop me from making it lgbt as possible. -- mod star
I did want to make The Tempest more of a central play, but it just didn’t translate well. Similarly, other supernatural elements like the witches in Macbeth. This isn’t so much a constraint mentioned, but my own time/energy means that I want to show the Macbeth backstory, in a specific format, but I can’t right now— mod aster
Is there a hierarchy of import when it comes to each play's individualized impact on shakespeare high's general arc? If so, what plays are crucial to the foundation of the story? Which ones did you do mostly for shits and giggles? (@pedanticlecturer)
This is phrased like an ACT question and i might not answer it right so sorry in advance but: mod aster and i only selected a few plays for each of us to do given we dont know all of shakespeare’s works, but we tend to put more emphasis on the the more well known. But it also comes down to 1. How much we have plotted out for each play and 2. What the followers ask about most. Our two most popular are hamlet and macbeth bc people are familiar w those but around march caesar always becomes relevant again. I didnt even have designs for some of the characters until someone asked about them. -- mod star
I would say the same as star— it generally comes down to what people ask about. I will say that the overall plot is sort of separated into “has happened” and “is happening”. Like, the human potion of Midsummer, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth are all in the “aftermath” portion, while Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet, among others, are happening. We’re trying to incorporate as much as we can, and I don’t think any of them were really put in without some thought.— mod aster
What personal significance does shakespeare hold in ur guys' lives? (@pedanticlecturer)
I go to a theater school rn and so ive dealt w shakespeare (although not all of them) it also helps that i was in loves labours lost last year as moth and that i read hamlet and r n j. Theres also a theater in my state that always does One Big Shakespeare per season and they always do them super well!!! My love for shakespeare probably started w seeing midsummer at that theater w mod aster!!! So. Theater kid rights!! -- mod star
To be honest, I got back into Shakespeare Because of the blog. I’ve been friends with some people that got really Pretentious about Shakespeare, and it kinda put me off of it. I did have a book of abridged plays (the plays’ plots written out in prose, basically) that I read as a kid, which is what got me into not only the plots of a lot of the plays, but also the idea of having them illustrated. And, same as star, the theater in state does the One Big Shakespeare— and they tend to do some really cool things with the costumes, setting them in diff time periods. I haven’t been able to see any lately since I’ve moved, but they still slap. — mod aster
🥰😘💙🥰🥰💜💟🥰I 😍💗💚😍😍LOVE🖤🖤 YALL ♥️♥️🧡💛💚💝❣️💕💘💖💗💓💞💝❤️💛💜 okay now i have a question i swear— how long have the two of you been doing art??? and what were your first shakespeare plays??? (@hellaghosts)
Uhh i started drawing when i was like idk 12 and i have the giant boxes of sketchbooks to prove it!!! I moved to digital art at abt 14-15 but mostly stayed traditional until this yr when i got a Neat New Tablet so some of my sketchbooks are sitting abandoned rip. My first shakespeare was either romeo and juliet or midsummer nights dream and i love both of them v much!!! I have a very old piece of art that i did for r n j for my freshman class assignment on it and it hasnt aged well alsdjfjafd circa 2016 i think??? -- mod star
Tumblr media
Oh man. I started drawing when I was about 10, but it was Bad. I don’t think I got much into drawing again until I was about 14? Sometime around the end of middle school/beginning of high school. I would say I started getting into drawing as more than doodling/coloring edits sometime around 2015-16? I would draw on my iPad with my finger, then I got a tablet for my computer, and now I pretty much stick to my iPad with an Apple Pencil. My first Shakespeare play was….. uh…… probably Midsummer???? I have No idea. We would go to plays when I was little, so I honestly don’t remember if I saw others before. It may have been Romeo and Juliet— I had that book where it was the original and the “modernized” with the little dog that explained things— which, if you know it makes sense, but if you don’t is probably a bonkers answer. — mod aster
Do you think this blog has like? An overarching thesis (be it b/c intentionally or simply b/c ur own take on the world has bled thru to the point where u believe it’s central to the piece at this point)? (@pedanticlecturer)
Not gonna lie, I had to read that like three times AND dm you to figure out what you were asking from us and all I have is “be gay, respect women, write your own happy endings”. — mod aster
This blog started with an ides of march shitpost and you think we have enough brain energy to write a whole thesis? I projected feelings of found family onto my half of the blog but idk if that counts. Be gay do crime 420 69 -- mod star
What’s the nature/rough dynamic of ur relationship? How do y’all know each other? (@pedanticlecturer)
Met mod aster when i was like 4 and even tho we didnt live close we became like, best friends although the Best part didnt start until we were like 13-ish and eventually we talked like non stop (about anime and homestuck. Yknow. 13 year old kid things) and we didnt see each other a lot bc of Distance and now its even worse bc aster is in colleg.,e but we consider each other siblings regardless of family bc we’re adopted into our own respective families so that bled over into our friendship and it would feel weird calling him anything other than my brother now. We’ve seen each other at our best and worst and if you really want a good insight on what we’re like as siblings watch griffin and justin mcelroy’s overview video of catlateral damage wherein i am griffin and he is the long suffering justin. -- mod star
Star is basically my long distance sibling and functionally the only cousin I recognize bc like their parents are basically an aunt and uncle and like our dads look enough alike that we’ve both accidentally gotten the wrong dad for a hug or similar so like. Anyways yeah Star is the Griffin to my Justin, complete with our absent middle brother who we love dearly— mod aster
Dubiously relevant q but what kind of music do y’all listen to when u do art (if that is indeed a habit either of u partake in) (@pedanticlecturer)
It can depend on the piece? I was working on some (unrelated) oc prints that were song-focused, and for those I just listened to said song on loop. Sometimes I have playlists. Sometimes I’ll just be in a Mood and throw a song on loop. But a lot of time for the blog, I’ll listen to The Adventure Zone for the billionth time, because I have Too Much Attention. I’ve also, on request from Star, linked the most recent “loop song”.— mod aster
I tend to obsess over the same like 3 songs every few weeks so those get listened to on repeat but it also depends on the tone of what im drawing or who im drawing i might genre switch bc of that. If im drawing ophelia i stick to lana del rey and if im drawing hamlet its the neighborhood, horatio is sufjan stevens etc. i have categorized,. Most of the characters i draw into different songs/genres/energies of music but not like i ever follow that. Sometimes i just pull up a really long nonsense video and forget to draw. Essentially: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- mod star
How’d y’all come up with ur pseudonyms? (@pedanticlecturer)
I love space so much and my main blog is starryeydsailor space gay rights!! Im also tiny and full of energy and bright so basically i;m star -- mod star
Uhhhh i was like “hey i want to do uhhhhhh flower?” And then I google searched flower names until I found one I liked —- mod aster
How did you end up deciding the rough timeline of events in canon? (@pedanticlecturer)
It’s mostly determined by like. How we choose per story? If that makes sense. Like, we just take story by story, and decide “is it happening, has it happened, and when?” And then we fit them together in relation to each other just by dint of. All existing at once. Like, I knew I wanted Macbeth to be in aftermath, because like, even though there’s no murder, the way I’ve translated it to the AU is still kinda heavy, and it’s something that I don’t know that I could do properly if it were happening right now. Also, it’s more interesting IMO to have them at different times. Tl;dr we wing it per story and slot them together— mod aster (mod star agrees I just can word better, in theory)
If you could tell the story of shakespeare high in a different format than an ask blog, would you? Obviously y'all are making very good use of the format, but would you want to write this as a animated series or like? a comic book? or is the form inseparable from the story? (@pedanticlecturer)
I kinda wanted to do a webcomic or maybe to plot develop through like, animatics but the element of surprise comes from the asks we get and really makes us think so the blog is a good start. We didnt think we’d get this far -- mod star
Pretty much what Star said— there are certain elements where it’d be neat to do as a comic or as an animatic. Like, the fantasy dream is like, an anthology webcomic of each story, where you can like, see other characters in the background and stuff. But to be honest, we develop a lot by what we’re asked— there was a post about developing worldbuilding by being asked questions and then pretending you’ve thought about the answer, and it’s not far off. Personally, it’s hard to just lay out a story, because I have a whole WORLD and what’s relevant? What are people interested in? It’s by getting questions that I can then focus in on an area to develop. And yeah, we Super didn’t think we’d get this far lmao — mod aster
Any headcanons about your characters that you don't think will ever come up on the blog through asks or plot posts? (@pedanticlecturer)
I could make a whole separate post for this!!!!! Mostly its voice headcanons (and by mostly i mean like 1 or 2) or relationship hcs!!!! -- mod star
Honestly same. I don’t think I have voice headcanons for mine, though I bet I could find some. I’ve got a bunch of miscellaneous headcanons that just kinda float around, but like they’re scattered, too numerous for this post, and also not always things I’m sure are canon yet.— mod aster

aftg asks; questions by triquetrine
these are so interesting so i did all of them.. i want to come back after a year and see if id still answer the same!
op is the post before this or also tagged “misc”
neil josten: favorite/most iconic line?
first one that comes to mind I’m not sure is a favorite or iconic line? but it’s a line i think about a lot and it always hurts to read. it’s when they're at the cabin in TKM.
“He didn’t care how much it hurt so long as he could pull Andrew closer, and he let Andrew take him apart until he couldn’t think anymore.”
that comes at the very end of Chapter 14 and gosh just the paragraph that line comes from and the paragraph before…. the fact neil thinks andrew doesnt care about him the way he cares/feels about andrew is like….. CMON MAN but also i just love the pining angst of it. i like this line especially because the line right before it mentions neil working his “bandaged fingers into Andrew’s hair”. so the “he didnt care how much it hurt” to me always carried a double meaning of 1. the physical pain he felt bc of his injuries but also 2. the pain of unfamiliarity abt his feelings towards andrew and thinking it was unreciprocal AND THAT HED HAVE TO “WARN” ANDREW like the implication.. of neil thinking abt their “relationship” possibly ending bc andrew doesnt feel the same and maybe wouldnt want to be entangled in whatever neil was feeling …… IM LIKE neil knows andrew so well and him being so sure abt this but hes like …. WRONG …. e
nathaniel wesninski: one thing you would change about the books? (plot, characters, etc)
there is very little id change about the books if at all. mainly bc while i know there are upsetting things that happen/the charas do, i think all of those things make the series really interesting to analyze and talk about. i will say a moment i hated was when neil touches andrews scars when andrew makes it clear he doesn't want neil to pry about them. i know neil offers his scars in turn when he's trying to convince andrew to let neil look over kevin but that was controlled. he let andrew touch them and find out about them of his own volition. neil touches something directly related to the trauma andrew had just experienced again when he had 0 permission to do so. while i always get mad at neil for this when i read it i still dont think id change it or get rid of it. im not really sure how id change it anyways and i think andrews relationship with his scars (and himself in general) is probably what allows him to brush it off(?)/never bring this up (plus maybe neil offering his scars was enough for andrew) but i havent thought too hard about this. but ya i remember i got rlly angry w neil the first time i read this scene and i still get mad abt it when i reread.
andrew minyard: if you could be friends with one of the characters, who would you pick?
i mean realistically i wouldnt be friends w jocks ILL BE REAL LOL and i think as much as i love the monsters, theres no way id be friends w them haha uhm but prob dan would be most realistic! maybe even katelyn tbh..
kevin day: if you played exy, what would your position be?
oh i think dealer! in sports i liked being able to do both defense and offense bc it made me feel i had more control over the field, like i could always do something if there were any holes
dan wilds: favorite moment/scene?
definitely the hotel reunion scene. theres so much to it; it drives me nuts!!!!! but honestly there are probably a lot of really good moments im forgetting. to me the whole series is really enjoyable and every scene has something i could say about it haha
matt boyd: song you would love to see in a live-action adaptation?
Oggghh this is so hard… esp since it takes place in 2007???? Idk.. iconic artists then i suppose ghfgkjhf BUT i think general vibes i think itd be so cool if paramore (time relevant), ptv (also time relevant), and mitski were on the soundtrack……. Ya……..
nicky hemmick: which made you more emotional, neil at evermore or neil in baltimore?
neil in baltimore for sure… neil at evermore i can't remember what i felt the first time i read it (maybe pain LOL bc he was doing it for andrew and i felt like riko wouldnt keep his promise) but in my latest reread i was unimpressed by it (mostly bc i think riko is boring and unimpressive). i think i mightve said evermore in the past though….. maybe... neil in baltimore is like … GOD neils emotions are so strong during all of that its really juicy haha. i think like him being angry bc he was on the cusp of having everything he couldve ever dreamed of; the desperation of wanting to fight back and get away; even just the fear of being in the same room as his father for the first time in so long... all really juicy
aaron minyard: a character you will defend to your death?
defend…. im not sure is the word i would use and i dont think i really believe in defending any of these charas “to death” bc of how flawed and complex they are; id like to acknowledge when they did wrong. i think id “defend” any of the characters if i saw anyone misinterpreting or misunderstanding them.. theyre all really interesting even if they didnt get too much spotlight. except maybe riko. hes incredibly boring to me. and also nathan ig and any of his crew just bc there is Nothing abt them rlly...
katelyn: which minor character do you wish you could see more of?
uhhhmmmmmmmm hmmmmmm….. idk maybe… jeremy…. gjfjgkdngmdghs just bc him and kevin r so funny.. i was thinking maybe jean too but…… idk a diff kind of kevin relationship lol (yikes) (pain) but really im satisfied w jeans screen time. i think ichirou is interesting but again i think he didn't rlly need more. maybe erik actually. im interested to know what nicky is like with him :0
allison reynolds: favorite headcanon about the foxes?
actually something i recently thought abt was neil and photography. iirc? andrew gives neil a camera in the ec and i also imagine kevin eventually gets another camera too (i loved that detail when we saw his room at the nest) so i thought abt neil and kevin sharing/trading pics they take of (mainly) scenery. i imagine neil takes pics of anything he wants to remember/keep while kevin is more prone to taking pics of subjects related to some nerd history stuff (lol) so thats why they trade scenery pics mainly. but i like this small connection bc i want more to their relationship than their exy obsession and i imagine they have room for more now that riko is gone and i just like this other commonality btwn them. i think maybe they mail the developed pics to each other maybe w small descripts/notes but thats it. and i also imagine it kind of just is something that started happening.. neil and andrew r on a roadtrip and some building reminds neil of kevin so he snaps a pic and eventually sends it to kevin w some note. kevin replies 1. either a text being like that is nothing. > neil: shrugs brushes it off but figures he is welcome to send more when kevin sends his own picture back or 2. kevin simply replies back similarly w his own photo. i dont know.. maybe this goes beyond what their actual relationship would be like but i do like the idea of them just bein like… dude friends u know so i want them to have more than just exy and a traumatizing experience between them.
as for common headcanons within the fanbase…. i do like the allison + neil haircuts thing.. although im not sure if i imagine it the same as most haha i feel neil would know how to cut his own hair from his life on the run (though theyre not Good or bad just like ok u know like passable generic w/e) i think hed definitely be tense the first couple times but he has experience w allison being close from needing to be covered up w make up after winter break so i think she would be allowed.
renee walker: favorite non-canonical ship? (renison, jerejean, etc)
uhmm to be honest none really… im way too attached to canon to be able to dismiss any established relationships. i think kevemy (??? is that the name) is rlly amusing but i dont want them together necessarily haha i used to rlly like renison mainly bc im a lesbian and i want “main” chara wlw relationships lol but i recently read something abt how bi allison doesnt rlly sit well w some bc she outs andrew and neil during the hotel scene.. i also agree this is kinda :/ if she was bi Mainly bc i feel a lot of ppl (or at least this is what i gather from renison stuff ive seen) portray allison already being established bi? if this makes sense. i think if renison/allison realizing shes bi is a later development id feel better abt it but usually renison is already established so ya her outing them does bother me…. BUT aside from this, thinking about them as characters and what their partners (would) look like… im not sure if theyd rlly choose each other.. but i still enjoy seeing them together in art and in fic bc in the end…. im a sucker for women lol….
seth gordon: most underrated dynamic? (matt & neil, wymack & andrew, etc)
my first thought was wymack and andrew bc i rlllllyy like their dynamic especially after reading their ec stuff. i loved their first meeting (andrews terrible sandwich??!?fhdhfjd) and when andrew breaks into wymacks apartment BUT i think ppl mention them enough its not underrated. i Actually think renee and andrews dynamic/friendship is rlly underrated/overlooked!!! especially after reading the son nefes ec i love their dynamic a lot…
some son nefes moments of them i liked:  tw // rape
renee convincing andrew to go with her to see matt after his trip to edens
how many knives do u carry / one more than u IS SO FUNNY and just andrews persistence abt fighting renee is also rlly funny to me
tw // rape : the moment when andrew asks renee if she killed her rapist/abuser that whole convo was good…
their convo in the rain w their tea
i cant remember when this happens or rlly exaclty what was said but renee offers andrew something (some help??) and he says i dont need (w/e it was) and she says something along the lines of  i know but it wouldnt do any harm or SOMETHING like that.. i like this bc she acknowledges their abilities while showing shed still like to offer some help. im p sure she does this another time too (w neil???? or someone i cant remember maybe it was andrew again) and i remember liking it too. she has a way w words and talking (also seen in her convincing andrew to see matt)
BUT regardless of ec stuff i think their relationship/dynamic seen in the books is rlly good too. theres def enough to be intrigued by them and i always have been? so i'm reeeaallly happy son nefes exists i loved reading it..
david wymack: which ncaa team would you play for?
oh to be honest i dont rlly remember many of them but of the Three (ravens, foxes, trojans) prob trojans. i remember i even got them in a uquiz once…
abby winfield: which character was the most realistically written?
first that came to mind was aaron actually.. i remember before when i didnt rlly like him or care abt him it was actually bc he was too “boring” to me. i always thought he had the most realistic reactions to things which is what made him boring to me amidst the ridiculousness of, well, everything in aftg lol… i still think he is really realistically written but now i dont think hes boring haha
besty dobson: how many times have you read the series?
fully i think…. only 3 times… i wish this were a higher count but i actually feel guilty everytime i try to reread it.
riko moriyama: coolest exy moment? (kevin’s last-minute point against the ravens, andrew shutting down the goal, etc)
uhhmm uhmm i def think kevin during the final game against the ravens…. hes so cool haha but i KNOW there were a lot of game moments that i thought were really cool so i cant rlly say…. oh also i love neil being defense in that game too rlly juicy wish i could pull up obscure moments bc i know i rlly enjoyed reading the games but terrible memory...
jeremy knox: which do you like reading more, domestic!foxes or chaotic!foxes?
uh i guess chaotic? not rlly sure exactly what that could entail but i do like… their chaos.. when they have fights and squabbles and stuff… this includes the high tension moments. ALTHOUGH i do like the tiny lines in the books when we see the monsters just doing like random basic everyday life stuff like playing video games or whatever. i like…. imagining them... fhdjfjshfjs… as for fic def chaos. i feel domestic is usually too softened…..
jean moreau: favorite friendship?
oh i think this goes back to andrew and renee. but other than them… i do like neil and matts friendship.. though probably not the same as its typically portrayed

hi its me again, you might remember me from my really cool space pictures masterpost a while back. yes im still doing this. no you cant stop me.
anyway. i went through the entire space telescope website thrice (actually it was more times than that but i lost count and i like the word thrice) looking for space pictures that matched pride flags. and i found so many.
please note; not all of these have the colours in exact flag order. some of them just have the same colours.
so lets start with rainbows.
1 the gay pride flag in the background of a picture of the lagoon nebula?? i think we all know what this means. thats right, the ocean is gay too. deal with it.
2 this star is gay, deal with it.
3 similarly to the lesbian ring coming up in the lesbian section, this ring is for all your gay space needs
bicycle
1 a mysterious occurrence of an Entire Flag In The Right Order
2 a neat as fuck bisexual orb who absolutely destroys multiple stereotypes at once. i support him. hes bigger than the earth itself. the biggest bisexual. i hope hes having a good time
lesbians
1 a cute ring for ur celestial gf with various shades of pink from the flag
2 this one only has like 2 colors technically but the stripes of it remind me of the flag
3 idk man but it strikes me as Very Gay and also a girl. she definitely doesnt date dudes and is pretty cautious about makin friends with them too (particularly the str8 ones) cus most of the dudes shes met stopped being interested even platonically once they found out she was a lesbian and in a steady relationship with the gorgeous being from pic 4. such is life. str8 dudes r overrated, in her considered opinion. shes pretty good friends with the orb from bisexual pic number 2 tho, who, as previously mentioned, is currently single and still respects the boundaries of everyone he meets cus hes a decent person. (the colors arent in order in this pic but its got some of the same ones.)
4 this one doesnt have many of the colors but certain parts of it look like flowing hair and the horsehead nebula is officially a lesbian okay?? sorry straighties i dont make the rules i just enforce them. if u look at this pic ur gay. thats just how it is. deal with it.
and finally,,,, last but definitely not least,,, prepare ur gay ass cus i promise that u arent ready 4 this... its a goddamn heart okay just look at that heart shape in the Lesbean colors: 5 its like a heart overlapped by a circle and the circle is a ring and oh my gosh space is so gay????
trainsgender
1 this technically just has the blue and pink of the flag but Also its really nice anyways and you can pry it from my cold dead transgender hands
2 i know what ur saying, this doesnt have a white stripe in the middle but Guess What i dont care it was rly hard to find the colours in any semblance of order and its Perfect Enough so fight me,,,
polyamorous
1 all the stars in this image are part of a polycule. they love each other very much and are having a very good experience together. i support them.
2 this star is AG Carinae, its definitely in a long distance relationship with the stars of Alpha Eridani, a binary system thats the tenth brightest star-like-thing in the night sky! the bright sparkle effect that its got in this image is technically an effect of the telescope, not what the star actually looks like, so it would appear much smaller even though its like 20 times the mass of the sun. but i think its cuter to say that its glowing with all the love its got for its significant others because honestly? id be glowing too if i were as lucky as this star. i support them.
genderqueer (also some maverique stuff cus thats what i am and theres a lot of orange n yellow in space)
1 this pic is currently making my entire goddamn day, its got the genderqueer flag closer to the center and then the maverique flag around the edges and im !!!!!!!!!
2 this is Just the genderqueer colours, no orange or yellow this time.
3 idk abt u all but to me anything with both purple and green is genderqueer regardless of if its got the white stripe in the middle
4 this ones a lot like 3 but Also it looks a like a seashell, further proving that the ocean is rly queer just like space
aspec (a note; “aspec” was something to do with cars before anything else, and after that, was first used as a natural, inclusive abbreviation of ace/arospec. it has never been used collectively by autistic people. i dont currently have a source, but google should be able to help if ur looking. exclusionists please dont chime in on this post; if you go on my blog youll probably find one pretty recently to talk about instead.)
1 - the less well accepted aro flag, the one with yellow and orange along with the green
2 - kind of a reach, but im seeing the greysexual flag flipped sideways, along the bottom half
3 lithromantic!!!
4 also lithromantic, theres lots of orange in space its kinda ridiculous
5 this has lots of other colors too but i see the abrosexual flag here!!! not quite in the corner but a little to the left and just a teensy bit up from center. and its not even upside down
i couldnt find the original ace flag which isnt surprising cus space doesnt have much grey lol
polysexual
1 this one looks weird and kinda pixellated but turns out thats just what you see when a stars light is so bright that u gotta cover up the part of the picture that its in so you can see the stuff around it, thus proving once and for all that nuclear fusion itself is polysexual and so are a large portion of stars
2 the colors are very noticeably not in order here and theres significantly less pink than blue and green but yknow what this nebula is really trying to accept itself and be proud of its sexuality and i support that 500%
pansexual
1 this Barely counts im really sorry im about to go thru the archive again with specifically pink blue n yellow in mind like i did earlier for the genderfluid flag (spoiler alert i found hardly anything that time) but idk im sorry.
okay i just went back thru and didnt skip over planets this time and guess what i discovered:
2 jupiter is pan
3 so is saturn
4 sorry str8ies. (also this one is the ENtire flag In Order not even flipped upside down and basically i screamed when i saw it and im still freaking out, What Luck???)
genderfluid
1 this doesnt have the purple but it Really reminds me of the flag. sorry. its hard to find matches when a flag has lots of colors.
2 still not in order and still missing the purple im sorry
3 not in order but it has every color!!! finally lmao. i hope u like it
inconclusive
* i could see this as lithromatic, genderqueer, or maverique. its p cool tho.
* genderfluid? polyamorous? idk but its cool af and also hella queer
and finally.....
heterosexual
0......yeah this is a prank look at the url.
*shrugs* sry str8ies. in space theres 0 hets allowed
(if you have queer friends who like space u should send this 2 them, ive been working on it for a couple days and also everyone deserves to know how unstraight and uncis space is)

I'm someone who agrees with your opinion on yoi completely! A lot of my friends are big fans so I don't really have anyone to discuss my issues of representation with seriously, so I'm happy to have found your blog!!! Also, what are your opinions on Flip Flappers and their LGBT representation?
Hello! Sorry for the late reply, wanted to finish watching Flip Flappers before I answered your ask ;) also I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog and yoi criticism posts!
I’m not 100% sure what you mean by your question though. Are you asking whether I think Flip Flappers is LGBT rep? Or are you asking about how I think Flip Flappers depicts Papika/Cocona’s relationship?
If its the former, I’ve talked about how anime is a gray area when it comes to lgbt representation. Particularly shinya anime. It’s just not on the same scale as tv dramas or mainstream movies or books (that are not marketed as BL or GL). So while there are probably Japanese wlws who love Cocona and Papika’s story to most Japanese ppl it just doesn’t really “register” as LGBT representation, y'know? Especially since Yuri at this point is a well-established genre.
You can kind of see that in this interview with the Flip Flappers Director, Oshiyama Kiyotaka (https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/5m1p17/an_interview_with_flip_flappers_director_kiyotaka/) Note the way he talks about yuri, as something “viewers nowadays find easy to hook into” with its own rules and conventions that one shouldn’t break.
If it’s the latter that you’re asking about however, I can talk about Papika/Cocona and yuri references. I recommend that you first read a post I made on yuri media recently, including the article that I link to in that post.
Post: ( http://saotome-michi.tumblr.com/post/157599879119/i-got-these-two-similar-asks-so-i-thought-id)
Finished reading? Cool, let’s move on to Flip Flappers.
(SPOILERS!!!)
Flip Flappers is a moe anime with really obvious yuri themes and references for yuri fans. The setting has no boys who are Cocona’s age and few important male characters, and the Papika/Cocona relationship is sprinkled with romantic undertones.
The main theme in the anime is Cocona’s fear of making her own decisions and failing. For example, Episode 3 with the desert land has Cocona running into a goddess(?) who just oozes the ero sadomasochist yuri archetype. Her interactions with Cocona warn us of Cocona’s desire to submit. Not sexually, but just submit in every way possible by letting someone else take the reins and make the decisions for her, which foreshadows what Mimi does towards the end of the series. Similarly, Episode 5, which is chock full of Class S Yuri references, from the all girls school to the constant lily imagery, has Cocona and Papika fall into a loop where they become passive participants in the dimension.
Ep 7 is the fan-favorite episode for Papika/Cocona. I’ve seen meta posts here on tumblr saying that its about Cocona struggling to leave the closet which was ?? to me tbh. I can understand why people interpret it that way, but to me this episode was strictly about Cocona’s lack of confidence in herself and her relationship with Papika, placed in the format of a dating sim/otome game. At the beginning of the episode, Cocona is scared that her actions in PI have caused Iroha senpai to change. This causes her to lack faith in herself and Cocona, which is why the PI in this episode is a world that doesn’t change, where Cocona and the different Papikas can do whatever without fearing the consequences of their actions. However, after spending time with the different Papikas, Cocona realizes that such a world is not worth it. She’d rather stride forward, knowing Papika will always catch her, and live with the consequences.
Sidenote: You know that nail clippers scene in ep 7 that ppl on reddit/tumblr were saying was a sign of lesbianism? I actually thought of the Japanese horror legend thing that goes “Don’t cut your nails at night otherwise your parents will die and you’ll never see them again” especially with the creepy Papika in the scene (btw this legend freaked me out as a kid I never clipped my nails at night) Thought it was a hint that Salt was Cocona’s dad. But as it turns out, they literally just put the nail clippers there for fun lmao. No deep meaning to it at all, they just brainstormed what could be in the desk and someone suggested nail clippers and that was apparently the most interesting idea they had. Source: https://mobile.twitter.com/315ByFFK/status/819949388134957060
I’m not denying that a part of Cocona’s journey is acknowledging her ~sexuality~ but I disagree with those who focus solely on that. On a more basic level it’s about Cocona finding the courage to make her own decisions and Papika helping her do that, by assuring her she’s not alone and by pointing out the ways their world is fun. Hence why the PI at the very end of ep 13 is a dull, drab world- because Cocona thinks that its a world without Papika.
But now that I’ve finally finished Flip Flappers I’m wondering if there’s PapiCoco fic that actually acknowledges that Papika is mentally around 18 years older than Cocona and is besties with her parents. Where is that fic, I would like to read it.

Magic Quadrant for General-Purpose Disk Arrays
Published 8 November 2018 - ID G00346291 - 41 min read
The GPDA storage market is being reshaped by solid-state arrays, competition from the cloud, hyperconverged infrastructures, secondary storage vendors and vendor consolidation. I&O leaders who understand the benefits and risks created by such changes make smarter infrastructure refresh decisions.
Market Definition/Description
This document was revised on 14 November 2018. For more information, see the
Corrections page
.General-purpose disk arrays (GPDAs) satisfy the storage needs of applications and middleware, such as databases, backup/restore systems and archiving solutions running on physical or virtual servers. Block-and-file protocols — e.g., Fibre Channel (FC), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), Network File System (NFS), Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and SMB — dominate this market. NVMe-oF, an emerging protocol designed to enhance the performance of solid-state arrays (SSAs), will not be supported by hybrid disk arrays or all hard-disk drive (HDD) arrays, perhaps other than those with flash-centric architectures delivering submillisecond response times.Gartner segments the external, controller-based storage market into the GPDA space, which includes all disk and hybrid arrays, and the SSA market. This Magic Quadrant excludes SSA, object and distributed file system storage, as well as software-defined storage (SDS), because they have their own respective Magic Quadrant, Critical Capabilities and/or Competitive Landscape research.
Magic Quadrant
Figure 1. Magic Quadrant for General-Purpose Disk Arrays
Source: Gartner (November 2018)
The absence of vendors in the Visionary quadrant is a reflection of a vendor and venture capitalist (VC) focus on SSAs, cloud integration, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) and artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning. These investments provide more autonomic storage management in high-growth market segments with value propositions that align with infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders’ priorities.
Vendor Strengths and Cautions
DDNDataDirect Networks (DDN) storage arrays consist mainly of SFA14K and SFA7700K platforms, which collectively address a broad range of high-performance use cases. DDN’s EXAScaler leverages these platforms, in combination with a custom Lustre file system, to address high-performance computing (HPC), archiving and machine learning use cases. Similarly, DDN GRIDScaler uses these hardware platforms to deploy IBM Spectrum Scale to address traditional HPC use cases. DDN’s SFA OS can be viewed as a base OS that supports these file services. Unlike most other competitor platforms, the SFA is not a variant of UNIX, but is a real-time OS that has been developed from ground up.Complementing the SFA OS is the Storage Fusion Xcelerator, a licensed feature that uses the solid-state drive (SSD) tier as a cache for predictive application and file system performance. DDN understands the complex nature of its customer deployments. Therefore, it leverages highly technical channel partners that have experience with open-source and HPC deployments. It also has numerous Tier-1 independent software vendor (ISV) partners that resell its products to complete their own product portfolios. The SFA7990, which was announced in June 2018, is a replacement for the SFA7700K; however, it’s not covered here, because it did not meet our cutoff date for new product announcements. In September 2018, DDN completed the acquisition of Tintri, thus expanding its product portfolio to include general-purpose storage. This acquisition gives DDN access to Tintri’s legacy customer base and an opportunity to expand and compete effectively in the enterprise storage market with a comprehensive portfolio of products. It also led to the withdrawal from marketing of the Enterprise Fusion Architecture (EFA) offering, which would have overlapped with Tintri arrays.
Strengths
DDN is a large, profitable, self-funded storage vendor that is still run by its founders. It has demonstrated the ability to respond rapidly to its customers’ needs and to new market opportunities.
DDN has significant deployments and “mind share” in the HPC market, where its arrays offer high-performance storage, as well as archiving capabilities.
DDN has vertical market solution specialists in life sciences, manufacturing, media, oil and gas, and finance, giving it expertise in its target verticals.
Cautions
Supporting existing Tintri customers and continuing R&D efforts for its newly acquired product line may reduce focus and investment in its core business.
SFA arrays do not support compression, deduplication and writeable snapshots.
The SFA series does not support file protocols natively; thus, it cannot position itself as unified storage for general-purpose use cases.
Dell EMCFive years after becoming a privately held company, and a privately controlled public company in September 2016, Dell is now in the process of taking itself public again. Dell’s re-emergence as a publicly traded company is expected to occur before year-end 2018. After the initial public offering (IPO), VMware will once again become a wholly owned business unit, and Michael Dell will retain enough control to continue repositioning and restructuring the company to coexist profitably with hyperscale public cloud providers. This strategy provides Dell with the resources to potentially dominate the on-premises IT infrastructure market, acquire capabilities and technologies needed to prosper in a digital world, cope with competitive threats, and minimize channel conflicts that could arise from alternative strategies.Dell’s “leave no customer behind” product strategy and reorganizations have delayed the rationalization of its midrange and high-end storage portfolio. This has forced it to continue investing R&D resources in its Unity, VMAX, Isilon and SC Series storage arrays, and to support complex go-to-market strategies.Dell’s “Flash First” strategy and emphasis on new product development have generally limited GDPA R&D investments to keeping GPDA competitive and maintaining large ecosystems, rather than delivering new capabilities. The different lineages of these arrays have resulted in Unity, SC (i.e., Dell Compellent), VMAX and Isilon customers having different support experiences, and have added cost and delays to Dell’s efforts to integrate with public cloud infrastructures.
Strengths
A large installed base, a broad portfolio of competitive storage arrays and a viable cloud integration/coexistence strategy are providing Dell with the time and cushion needed to become a preferred hybrid cloud infrastructure provider.
Dell EMC’s re-emergence as a publicly traded company that is not privately controlled could provide the financial resources needed to enable it to invest in rapidly growing and/or disruptive technologies and new go-to-market strategies.
Innovative lease and rental programs, multiyear enterprise license agreements and the SC Series’ perpetual, right-to-use software license agreements — which waive one-time charges when doing array refreshes — are keeping Dell EMC on many users’ shortlists.
Cautions
Dell EMC’s “better together” strategy, technology-refresh-based product announcements and a slowdown in the cadence of significant functional enhancements suggest a gradual loss of competitive advantage.
Many clients no longer consider Dell EMC postsales service and support a competitive advantage.
The lack of interoperability among Dell EMC storage systems adds management complexity and operational inefficiencies when deployed in mixed IT infrastructures.
FujitsuThe Fujitsu disk array storage portfolio consists of the ETERNUS DX500 S4, DX600 S4, DX8700 S3 and DX8900 S3 systems. The midrange ETERNUS DX500 S4 and DX600 S4 arrays are new models that became available in January 2018. The high-end ETERNUS DX8700 S3 and DX8900 S3 models became available in July 2015. A new DX8900 S4 was announced in October 2018; however, this is not included in this analysis, because it’s too early to rate this product. Fujitsu has a good understanding of the direction of the market in terms of storage manageability and technology directions. This can be seen in the ability of all DX hybrid arrays and AF SSAs to be managed by the same administration software — the ETERNUS SF. This provides storage infrastructures, with one standardized replication and administration system for several entries: midrange, high-end hybrid and SSAs.Similarly, Fujitsu is leading in the area of transparency for performance with newly published, publicly available SPC results; the availability of 32Gbs FC connectivity; and a larger SSD tier in the midrange hybrid arrays. All of these factors improve performance and reduce rack space, power, cooling, networking costs and complexity.Customer satisfaction and reliability are high; however, Fujitsu lacks support for hybrid cloud and pre-emptive AI and machine-learning-driven autoresolution and data analysis of storage array telemetries. Fujitsu’s service provider approach offers a broad variety of capacity on demand and “pay as you go” storage services, called Fujitsu Cloud Services. This enables customers to use the ETERNUS DX storage arrays as a private cloud operational expenditure (opex), rather than making a capital expenditure (capex).
Strengths
Open and transparent, up-to-date, independently verified performance results.
High levels of reliability and customer satisfaction.
One family of storage arrays with a common administration graphical user interface (GUI) and cross-array-compatible replication technology.
Cautions
Lack of support for hybrid cloud.
Lack of pre-emptive AI and machine-learning-driven autoresolution and predictive data analysis of storage array telemetries.
Sales and support coverage in North America is not as comprehensive as in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) or the Asia/Pacific (APAC) region.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)The HPE disk array storage portfolio consists of the HPE XP7, the 3PAR Series and the Nimble Series of storage arrays. The HPE XP7 and the HPE 3PAR 20000 series are the high-end arrays, whereas the HPE 3PAR 8000 and HPE Nimble HF series are the midrange arrays. HPE has continued to exploit the InfoSight technology that it acquired via the Nimble Storage acquisition. This can be seen by the complete integration of InfoSight predictive support automation with the HPE 3PAR arrays in April 2018. However, Infosight is not available for the HPE XP7, which is not of great concern to customers, because the HPE XP7 is sold on an exception basis, where niche legacy system support is required.Overall, Infosight has benefited HPE storage business by providing better levels of support and maintenance. Other nontechnological programs, which enable HPE disk storage arrays to remain competitive, are guarantee programs, such as the “Store More” and “Timeless Storage” offerings. These guarantee data reduction, reliability and inclusive software, as well as provide array controller upgrade programs.
Strengths
InfoSight provides a support and maintenance advantage to HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble storage arrays.
The HPE Nimble storage arrays are simple to deploy and administer.
HPE offers “pay as you go” storage capacity on-demand offerings and HPE GreenLake services, which enable customers to use HPE storage arrays in private clouds at cloud prices and with subscription and service price models.
Cautions
The HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble Storage arrays do not support the latest high-bandwidth 32 Gbps FC connections, which reduce cabling and data center complexity.
The HPE Nimble Storage arrays do not support file-based protocols, which are used by an increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) and unstructured data applications.
3PAR and Nimble Storage product overlaps, differences in features, storage efficiencies and the lack of interoperable remote replication complicate messaging and sales cycles.
Hitachi VantaraHitachi Vantara continues to maintain its reputation for building reliable, high-performance storage arrays. New product announcements and enhancements have focused on improving ease of use (i.e., monitoring and management tools) and technical refreshes that carry minimal risks. Hitachi has been able to keep its large global customer base intact, keep customer satisfaction high, and maintain its well-respected service and support organization. This means its plans to become an IoT company may still result in improved performance in the storage market.Hitachi has kept its Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) and Hitachi Network Attached Storage (HNAS) arrays competitive by most measures of product attractiveness. Sharing a common architecture and management tools, from the smallest VSP G200 to the flagship VSP G1500, provides users with an easy-to-follow upgrade path that leverages their investments in training policy and procedures. It also leverages Hitachi investments in infrastructure monitoring and management tools, as well as ecosystem certifications and plug-ins.In May 2018, Hitachi refreshed its entry to midrange VSP arrays with the announcement of the G350, G370, G700 and G900. However, these new arrays were announced too late to influence Hitachi’s Magic Quadrant positioning or be considered in Gartner’s “Critical Capabilities for General-Purpose Midrange Storage Arrays.”
Strengths
A worldwide presence, financial viability, a reputation for building reliable storage arrays and an effective support organization make Hitachi a storage vendor that can meet the needs of multinational corporations.
The VSP’s common architecture, administrative tools, interoperability, ecosystem and scalability provide operational efficiency, while reducing the risks associated with growth.
Hitachi is investing in improving its ease of use — specifically, the Storage Management Pack for VMware vRealize Operations, Hitachi Data Instance Director (HDID) and Hitachi Storage Plug-in for Containers (HSPC). They are providing tighter integration with VMware and public cloud providers, automation and copy data management.
Cautions
Hitachi’s reluctance to compete on price and willingness to “no bid” competitive situations limits its usefulness as an alternative to users dissatisfied with their incumbent storage vendors.
The lack of HDD-level compression and deduplication has the potential to increase storage acquisition, maintenance and facilities costs, relative to competitors that support these features in many environments.
Despite ongoing improvements, VSP management complexity and staff productivity relative to modern hybrids arrays remain a user concern.
HuaweiHuawei continues to mature as a provider of high-performing, external enterprise storage systems. The Huawei OceanStor series of storage platforms ranges from midrange to high-end. All models in the OceanStor series — 5000V5, 6800V5 and 18000V5 — feature a scale-out architecture and support for multihost, block-and-file protocols. A common OS (OceanStor OS) that implements a strong set of data service features and functions satisfies capacity utilization, replication, performance and security requirements and is shared across the OceanStor series. Huawei continues to release a regular cadence of enhancements strengthening its OceanStor controller-based software support for OpenStack, the public cloud and deployments requiring robust high availability.Huawei supports its performance claims with published, industry-standard, SPC-1 benchmark results. Designed to meet the needs of specific use-case workloads, the number of controllers, host interfaces, disk drives and memory capacity are the physical attributes that differentiate the three members of the OceanStor series. In addition to the OceanStor family, Huawei has released FusionStorage, an appliance that is based on a new software stack that supports block-and-file protocols, to address on-premises, hyperscale, private cloud use cases. Huawei strategically engages with a broad range of value-added resellers (VARs), distributors, system integrators (SIs) and cloud-serviced providers to reach the end-user market.
Strengths
In addition to a broad enterprise storage portfolio, Huawei provides a full stack of IT infrastructure solutions, including public cloud services.
Available on all OceanStor models, the Huawei HyperMetro mirroring feature provides gateway-free, active-active capabilities between two locations supporting high-availability disaster recovery (DR).
Huawei offers flexible acquisition models, including storage as a service (STaaS) offering that enables tiering and replicates data from on-premises infrastructures into the Huawei public cloud.
Cautions
The Huawei OceanStor storage systems lack support for a platform-level, proactive-analytics-driven client support system.
The geopolitical attitude of leaders in some countries may preclude organizations located in those countries from considering Huawei as a viable supplier of general-purpose storage arrays.
The Huawei OceanStor management software interface does not measure up to best-of-class products in ease of use.
IBMThe IBM hybrid storage array portfolio mainly comprises the Storwize Series and DS 8880 Series. The XIV, which enjoyed moderate success in the marketplace, has been withdrawn from active marketing and has been replaced by the A9000 and A9000R. The Storwize Series is a dual-controller storage platform offered in two variants (the V7000 and V5000), both of which were last refreshed in 2016. Complementing the Storwize hardware is Spectrum Virtualize software, which IBM continues to enhance and improve by releasing regular updates. Block-level deduplication, Docker container support, native cloud tiering and REST API interface support were some of new capabilities introduced with Spectrum Virtualize during the past 12 months.IBM offers a 2:1 data reduction guarantee on Storwize V5030 and V7000. Licensing is per enclosure, and software licensing can be purchased separately or as a bundle. The DS8000 Series are scale-up storage systems comprising the DS8884 and DS8886 products, positioned for mission-critical workloads. IBM has introduced several new features to the DS8000 series, notably tiering to the cloud and container support. It has also introduced zHyperLink, a mainframe link technology that delivers low-latency z/OS mainframe input/output (I/O). IBM actively contributes to OpenStack and releases storage drivers at a regular cadence. It also provides strong integration with its ISV partners.
Strengths
As a result of its strong and loyal partner network, IBM continues to exert strong influence in emerging markets.
The Storwize platform can externally virtualize most third-party storage arrays, thus simplifying heterogeneous storage management.
Both Storwize and DS8000 offer native tiering to the public cloud, without the need for a gateway device.
Cautions
IBM charges for certain extra features in Storage Insights Pro, such as optimized data placement with tiering that others include in their base product; this can add cost and complexity to IBM storage decisions.
The IBM DS8000 Series does not offer data reduction capabilities and requires deployment of a SAN Volume Controller (SVC) to enable these features.
Existing XIV customers must plan for migration to alternative platforms, such as A9000R; IBM has announced that the XIV will no longer be actively sold.
INFINIDATINFINIDAT is a privately held company that reports positive cash flow, profitability, and continued revenue and installed base growth. In November 2017, it obtained $95 million in Series C funding to support sales and marketing expansion, as well as increased R&D. These R&D investments have produced InfiniSync, Neutrix Cloud storage service, container support and the new InfiniBox 6212, with as much as 8.3 PBs of capacity.InfiniSync is a unique alternative to three-site replication that replicates every I/O to a DR site, without the need for a data bunker. It achieves this by storing I/Os that have not yet been acknowledged by the InfiniBox installed at the DR site in a fireproof, shockproof and waterproof safe. These I/Os are then transmitted over a high-speed Wi-Fi or 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) link, when a networking or array failure is detected. The Neutrix Cloud storage service enables applications to run on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure or Google infrastructures to access InfiniBox-based STaaS, using a utility-based pricing model from those public cloud compute environments.INFINIDAT has positioned its InfiniBox hybrid arrays as an attractive alternative to GPDAs and SSAs, by guaranteeing submillisecond response times, providing near-autonomic operation, as well as lower acquisition and ownership costs. Key to these advantages are an intuitive web GUI and an architecture that takes ownership of data placement and reduces the skills needed to competently operate an InfiniBox. InfiniBox’s automation capabilities are further enhanced by the availability of software development kits (SDKs) and support of nonblocking RESTful APIs. Overall sales effectiveness is further enhanced by an all-inclusive, capacity-based software pricing model; standard, three-year 24/7 support; and the waiving of installation fees.
Strengths
INFINIDAT is profitable, and is growing its presence in North America, EMEA and the APAC region.
High customer satisfaction, an appealing set of InfiniBox value propositions, a demonstrated willingness to compete on price and a capacity on demand (COD) pricing model have created a large target market for INFINIDAT.
INFINIDAT R&D is delivering a steady cadence of product enhancements that are important to users.
Cautions
INFINIDAT has expanded into a multiproduct company, with expansion into new geographic areas, and double-digit revenue growth. This will test INFINIDAT’s support capabilities and management team.
InfiniBox’s lack of metro or stretch-cluster support can increase the skills and time needed to quickly fail over and fail back.
The lack of 16 Gbps and 32 Gbps FC and 25 GbE support is a performance and, potentially, a cost handicap. It will become increasingly important to overcome this when SSAs implement end-to-end NVMe-oF.
Infortrend TechnologyInfortrend Technology develops and sells competitive entry and midrange scale-up storage platforms under the umbrella EonStor brand. Within this brand, Infortrend has developed three families — GSe Pro, GSc and GS — to address specific use cases. The EonStor GSe Pro is a single-controller solution designed for the small or midsize business (SMB) market; accordingly, the GSe Pro is not considered in this Magic Quadrant. The EonStor GSc family, released in June 2018, is positioned by Infortrend as a hybrid storage appliance to help users embrace the public cloud. It was too late to be considered in this Magic Quadrant. The EonStor GS, the Infortrend product analyzed in this Magic Quadrant, is a general-purpose enterprise storage platform, with multiprotocol block-and-file host support.Originally architected in the era of HDDs, the Infortrend EonStor GS hybrid model optionally supports SSDs. The EonStor GS feature capacity efficiency, autostorage tiering, snapshot, remote replication, compression and data deduplication functions; however, deduplication is a postprocess implementation. The Infortrend EonOne is a common management platform for all members of the EonStor family. With corporate headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan, Infortrend supports its channel partners and end-user clients with sales and support offices in China, Europe, Japan, Pan-Asia and the U.S.
Strengths
EonStor GS provides a unified storage platform to integrate with main cloud providers for backup and recovery, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, OpenStack Swift and Alibaba Aliyun, without the requirement for a separate gateway.
Compression and data deduplication functions may be enabled or disabled by volume.
Super capacitors, which last for the life of the storage system and require no maintenance, are paired with a flash module to protect against data loss due to power outages.
Cautions
Infortrend’s client support infrastructure heavily relies on its channel partners to resolve client Level 1 and Level 2 issues and has not implemented a deep analytics or AI methodologies system to proactively address client performance, capacity or problem issues.
API support or snapshot integration with leading backup/recovery ISVs, including Veritas, CommVault and IBM Spectrum Protect, are missing capabilities in the EonStor family.
The EonStor GS lacks support for quality of service (QoS) or multitenancy capabilities.
InspurInspur, a top-three vendor in the Chinese IT market, is relatively unknown outside China. It is a portfolio vendor with competitive products and demonstrable expertise in servers, storage, cloud infrastructure and AI. Building off its domestic installed base, Inspur has decided to expand into the global market, using its relative independence from the Chinese government, competitive technology and aggressive pricing as key differentiators. Add the appeal of using the same technology for on-premises and public cloud infrastructures, and Inspur has a strong value proposition for organizations with a preference for implementing a hybrid infrastructure using regional cloud providers.Inspur has a comprehensive portfolio of entry-level, midrange and high-end storage, along with SSA and SDS offerings. Inspur positions the AS5000G2 series arrays as midrange storage, and targets the AS18000 at the high-end market. The AS18000 supports block-and-file protocols, including FC, iSCSI, NFS and CIFS. Data services, including snapshots, cloning, encryption, local mirroring and QoS, are bundled as part of the base license. Additional services, such as remote replication, virtualization and tiering, require separate licenses. Licenses are priced per system for the midrange systems and priced per controller pair for the high-end systems. Inspur sells most of its products directly and has few channel partners outside the APAC region and Japan.
Strengths
Inspur has the scale, technology and financial resources needed to expand into global markets.
All AS G Series products, from entry-level to high-end arrays, share a common OS, management tools and ecosystem compatibility matrices.
Development efforts are aligned with current market and technology trends and include improving management ease of use, replication functionality, storage efficiency, cloud integration and lowering its cost of goods.
Cautions
Inspur lacks a significant market presence, brand awareness, access to a trained labor pool and demonstrated support capabilities outside China.
Reliance on partners to sell and provide first-level support outside China will require prospects to do additional due diligence during the acquisitions.
The lack of secure multitenancy and data deduplication are potential sales impediments for price-sensitive customers building on-premises clouds or delivering infrastructure as a service (IaaS).
LenovoThe Lenovo DS Series and V Series make up its GPDA portfolio. Co-developed with Seagate Technology, the ThinkSystem branded DS Series is a scale-up storage offering supporting SAS, iSCSI and FC block host protocols. Substantiated by published SPC-1 benchmarks and aggressive pricing, the DS Series is an attractive offering from a price/performance perspective. The DS Series supports a mix of HDDs and SSDs, including self-encrypting hard drives (SEDs). Data service functions include thin provisioning, autotiering, asynchronous replication, snapshots and virtual storage pools; however, the DS Series lacks support for data deduplication or compression. Lenovo’s XClarity Administrator is integrated with the DS Series, along with its Rapid Deployment and EZ Start wizard, to provide a standard user interface and to simplify setup and management. The Lenovo Storage V5030 and V3700 V2 are sourced from IBM under an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement. V5030 and V3700 V2 are scale-up storage platforms that feature support for multihost block-and-file protocols based on 12Gb SAS, 10Gb Ethernet and 16Gb FC technology. Both models support HDDs and SSDs; however, the V5030 can support more than twice the number of drives. The V5030 data service functions are more robust in that encryption, real-time compression and dual-system cluster are not available on the V3700 V2 model. On 13 September 2018, Lenovo announced a global alliance agreement with NetApp. Under this agreement, Lenovo will source the NetApp SANtricity-based storage platforms, the FAS 2000/8000 series and the AFF A200/A300 All Flash arrays under an OEM arrangement. Lenovo will take these systems to market under the ThinkSystem brand and will be responsible for Level 1 and Level 2 support. The global alliance also includes a joint venture (JV) arrangement, enabling Lenovo and NetApp to develop and sell enterprise storage solutions specifically in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).The new Lenovo global alliance with NetApp is not part of the vendor analysis associated with this Magic Quadrant.
Strengths
The ThinkSystem DS Series and Lenovo V Series enterprise storage platforms are proven and stable offerings.
Lenovo has a credible worldwide service and support organization supported by an efficient supply chain.
With the new NetApp alliance, Lenovo is expected to offer customers a more complete storage offering, from entry storage to unified all-flash arrays.
Cautions
Ongoing service and support responsiveness for the ThinkSystem DS Series and Lenovo V Series may suffer as Lenovo transitions to the go-forward enterprise storage portfolio based on NetApp intellectual property (IP).
Lenovo does not offer a cloud-connected client support infrastructure for the ThinkSystem DS Series and Lenovo Storage V Series.
Lenovo and its ThinkSystem DS Series and Lenovo V Series clients will have to rely on Seagate and IBM to remain good technology partners, as Lenovo transitions away from them.
NECNEC is a Japanese IT products and services conglomerate, catering to enterprise and consumer businesses. The NEC hybrid storage array portfolio consists of the Mx10 and Mx20 series that together address entry-level and midrange enterprise storage requirements. Mx20 series functionality has been enhanced with the addition of flash tier data compression support. NEC introduced two new products in 2018 — M120 and M320 — both targeted at the entry-level storage market. In the midrange market, NEC continues to lead with the M510 and M710 systems to address a broad range of application workloads requirements. Replication is supported in the array, as well as between storage systems in synchronous, semisynchronous and asynchronous modes.NEC integrates with a broad range of backup, virtualization vendors. It integrates with video management system vendors, such as Milestone, to provide seamless live and archive video storage and contributes to OpenStack by releasing drivers for iSCSI and FC protocols at a regular cadence. It also provides verifiable and independent performance benchmarks by publishing SPC-1 benchmarks. It provides a tool to facilitate migrations between series and systems from multiple generations. Support staff are stationed across all major geographic locations to address escalations in a timely manner.
Strengths
NEC is considered a leading storage provider in the media production and physical security vertical industries, and it integrates with several ISVs in these industries to deliver unique solutions.
All essential software licenses are bundled, along with a storage array, thus simplifying the buying experience.
The Mx10 Series integrates with NEC’s disk-based backup and archive deduplication appliance, HYDRAstor, via DirectDataShadow software, thus streamlining the backup and archive process.
Cautions
NEC’s reseller agreement with Dell EMC has its business confronting uncertainties in the near term. It can be an opportunity for NEC to sell more of its own products, but it also risks losing a part of its important customer base and further reducing its focus on storage.
The Mx10 Series does not support native data compression and deduplication, and the Mx20 supports SSD pool only data compression.
NEC has had limited success in markets outside Japan, despite aggressive marketing campaigns.
NetAppNetApp’s hybrid disk array portfolio consists of the FAS2700, FAS8200, FAS9000 and E-Series of hybrid arrays. The unified FAS9000 is offered for file, block, multiprotocol and hybrid cloud high-end workloads, and the FAS8200 is offered for similar midrange workloads. The E-Series is positioned and offered into specific block storage workloads, where the requirements are oriented toward low-overhead, simple, fast storage that does not require data reduction. NetApp has expanded and diversified its storage array product portfolio to provide offerings for hybrid cloud infrastructures by using array software in integrated systems, software-based storage and cloud offerings. Examples of this include the FAS arrays, which are used to provide storage services by NetApp FlexPod integrated systems and Data Fabric. NetApp has been successful with its Data Fabric value proposition. This offering is for customers that require services that can move applications and their data between any cloud variations, such as among private clouds, among public clouds, and between private and public clouds. The data mobility conversation that Data Fabric and FabricPool enables (automated tiering to the cloud) has up-leveled NetApp/customer conversations from that of a storage supplier to a supplier of business and developer solutions. Specifically, NetApp now often orients its value proposition to data and application mobility, compared with storage array features. Nevertheless, the result has been an increase in storage array sales. NetApp has partnerships and OEM agreements with many public cloud vendors, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, within which clients can run cloud-native file services or the NetApp storage array software, ONTAP, in the cloud. This enables NetApp storage arrays in private data centers to share, copy, move and transfer data with applications and services in the cloud. The general-purpose storage arrays, FAS8200 and FAS9000, have not been updated since October 2016 and November 2016, respectively. However, because most functions and features are provided by the ONTAP software, which was updated with Version 9.4 in May 2018 and Version 9.5 in October 2018, customers can obtain all the latest features. Also, because general-purpose arrays are not used for performance-critical applications, the age of the FAS8200 and FAS9000 controllers with respect to performance is less significant. Customers that require performance can purchase solid-state AFF or EF arrays from NetApp.
Strengths
NetApp offers the FAS Series of highly scalable, unified hybrid storage arrays, with all of the features required by today’s hybrid cloud data centers.
The Data Fabric value proposition resonates well with I&O leaders and opens new opportunities for NetApp.
Broad cloud support and partnerships, and the ability to run SDS images of NetApp FAS arrays in the cloud with the major hosting vendors.
Cautions
NetApp E-Series use cases and R&D are focused primarily on the HPC, data analytics and surveillance markets, which do not require unified storage or data reduction.
Postsales support effectiveness is improving, but remains inconsistent
Customers that require extra replication features, such as FlexClone, SnapMirror, SnapCenter and SnapManager, are required to purchase the Premium Bundle or other optional software, such as SnapLock and FlexArray Virtualization offerings.
OracleThe Oracle ZFS storage scale-up, multihost protocol offering is presented in two form factors — as a stand-alone appliance or as a storage system that is preracked and precabled at the factory. The Oracle ZFS Hybrid Storage Pool technology features a combination memory/flash-centric architecture that optimizes performance with either all-HDD, all-flash storage or a combination of both. The mature data service software library reflecting a steady cadence of enhancements, supports a wide variety of capacity efficiency, replication, QoS, system analytics, management and security functions. In addition, Oracle has implemented co-engineered features with the Oracle Database and application development groups to elevate Oracle ZFS performance efficiency and storage management simplicity when deployed to support Oracle Database and application infrastructures. The ZFS appliance is broadly deployed to support a wide swath of general-purpose and high-performance workloads, and is Oracle’s preferred storage platform to support online transaction processing (OLTP) applications based on Oracle Database and Data Warehouse. The optional Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) SSA enables users to seamlessly migrate backup data to OCI or object storage.
Strengths
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances are available under flexible acquisition models, including the traditional capex method, a “right to use” program and a flexible capacity program. In this case, users pay a monthly fee and return the product at the end of the cycle.
Data encryption is provided at a granular level by the ZFS Storage Appliance Controller, independent of drive media type.
DTrace Analytics provides fine-grain analysis on the data path, from the ZFS Storage systems to the clients regarding performance, capacity utilization and problem resolution.
Cautions
Current Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance offerings are not integrated with AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform or IBM Cloud.
Oracle does not guarantee performance or capacity utilization for its Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance deployments.
Multitenancy, synchronous replication and cascading replication remain missing features in the ZFS Storage Appliance platform.
QuantumQuantum’s storage portfolio consists of the QXS hybrid storage systems and its Xcellis Scale-out network-attached storage (NAS). The QXS-3, QXS-4 and QXS-6 Series arrays support tiering, snapshots and asynchronous remote replication, but lack synchronous remote replication, compression and deduplication. This subset of features suggests an array designed for performance and low cost on a raw $/TB basis. These characteristics align well with the needs of HPC, video and archiving environments, and enable the QXS series to compete in application environments that obtain little benefit from data reduction technologies. Hence, its broad hypervisor support and integration with open-source software (OSS) platforms, such as OpenStack. With the December 2017 launch of its Xcellis NAS series, Quantum has improved its appeal in the unstructured data market by focusing on price and performance. Xcellis NAS uses Quantum’s StorNext File System (SNFS) and can be purchased as an appliance or as SDS. The SNFS is functionally competitive; however, it lacks data compression, deduplication and synchronous remote copy. This subset of functionality maps the Xcellis and QXS series into the same target markets.Quantum sells all of its storage systems via channel partnerships. Postsales support is addressed by support staff stationed in multiple locations that mostly address Level 1 and Level 2 cases, while Level 3 issues are addressed by dedicated engineering teams located in Quantum’s headquarters. During the past few years, Quantum has increasingly focused on delivering vertical-specific solutions. It has established partnerships with video surveillance software providers and media and content production vendors and has delivered solutions that address these specific use cases.
Strengths
The launch of Xcellis NAS, with an emphasis on scalability, cloud integration and price competitiveness, will align with CIO priorities and should enable Quantum to satisfy more of its customer’s block and NAS storage requirements.
QXS series arrays provide responsive and granular tiering features and meet NEBS and MIL-SPEC criteria.
Quantum’s focus on verticals, such as media content production and video surveillance, with well-established partnerships that have vendors in these verticals, reduces competitive exposures to larger vendors and cloud providers.
Cautions
The lack of integration with VMware, Hyper-V and Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) limits Quantum’s appeal outside its verticals.
Growth in video surveillance, HPC and AI/machine learning has created a more competitive market in which Quantum is an option.
Non-Quantum customers considering Xcellis NAS will need to do additional due diligence that includes product capabilities, Xcellis NAS support capabilities and reference checking.
SynologyThis Taiwanese company caters to the SMB and midrange storage market. In the midrange enterprise storage market, Synology leads with its FS and XS series storage systems. In the SMB category, it offers multiple product lines: J-series, Value Series and Plus Series, which cater mainly to file storage requirements. All Synology systems are equipped with DiskStation Manager (DSM), a web-based OS that helps users customize the storage system to address specific use cases. DSM can configure the storage system to provide the following services: file sync and share server, cloud gateway, and virtualization platform, as well as a backup/DR target. The DSM also supports iSCSI, which is useful for small enterprises looking for a low-cost SAN solution. All essential data services, such as compression, snapshots and replication, and file-and-block protocol support, are bundled as part of the base software, which is free of charge. Its products are certified with a wide variety of virtualization and cloud platforms, such as VMware, Microsoft, Docker and OpenStack, as well as all major public cloud vendors. Synology’s rich ecosystem of channel partners addresses all major markets, and its technical support staff covers all major geographic locations.
Strengths
Synology DSM is feature-rich and updated at a regular cadence.
Synology has a strong presence and mind share in the entry-level and midsize NAS market.
The Synology arrays integrate with all major public cloud vendors for such use cases as file sync and share and archiving.
Cautions
Synology has a limited presence and mind share in the enterprise storage market.
Its storage array platforms perform many server and storage roles, creating potential confusion during the buying cycle.
Synology storage arrays lack scale-out capabilities.
Western DigitalWith its acquisition of Tegile in August 2017, Western Digital can now implement and offer new storage technologies, purchase methods, guarantees and features. It has retained much of IntelliFlash’s senior management team and development staff and demonstrated a commitment to making this a successful acquisition. Western is adding a new tier of persistent storage memory in the controller for hybrid storage arrays to improve performance, while maintaining low hybrid storage array purchase costs. Due to the storage software being media-independent, with no proprietary hardware, Western offers unified storage arrays with most protocols and storage media and can transition quickly to new technologies.Support is provided globally in the U.S., APAC region and EMEA. Western Digital’s use of an indirect channel sales model is intended to lower costs, thereby enabling customers to buy on-premises, private data center storage at public cloud cost. IntelliFlash continues to grow and gain new customers in the hybrid storage array market; however, sales of its SSAs are overtaking the HDD-based hybrid arrays. IntelliFlash uses the same storage software in hybrid arrays and SSAs, so the hybrid arrays and SSAs have the same administrative GUI and can replicate to each other. Customer migrations to and from SSAs and hybrid arrays are simple.
Strengths
Western Digital can adapt quickly and implement new features, purchase methods (such as all-inclusive storage software features) and monthly storage subscription charges.
Western Digital now has large 1 PB, high-availability scale-out arrays with proven, real-world 1,000,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) capabilities.
Western Digital’s modern arrays have all the features of incumbent arrays, plus more, such as compression and deduplication for hybrid HDD/SSD arrays.
Cautions
Most of the vendor’s growth is from the solid-state/flash products, not from the HDD or hybrid arrays.
Western Digital will have to make significant investments in marketing, sales and support capabilities to grow IntelliFlash’s customer base without negatively affecting customer satisfaction.
Synchronous replication is still not available with the Western Digital hybrid arrays.
Vendors Added and DroppedWe review and adjust our inclusion criteria for Magic Quadrants as markets change. As a result of these adjustments, the mix of vendors in any Magic Quadrant may change over time. A vendor’s appearance in a Magic Quadrant one year and not the next does not necessarily indicate that we have changed our opinion of that vendor. It may be a reflection of a change in the market and, therefore, changed evaluation criteria, or of a change of focus by that vendor.
AddedNone
Dropped
Tegile was acquired by Western Digital.
Tintri exited the business due to bankruptcy.
Promise experienced a change in direction.
Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria
The criteria enumerated below apply to established and emerging vendors alike selling midrange and high-end general-purpose storage systems that support block, file, or block-and-file protocols. Commonly supported protocols include FC, iSCSI, SAS, SMB (aka CIFS) and NFS. Less commonly used, but still qualifying, protocols include FC over Ethernet (FCoE) and InfiniBand. These systems are optionally configured with a mix of HDDs and/or SSDs.Product Criteria:
Bundled all the hardware and software needed to store and retrieve data using industry-standard block and/or file host connection protocols into a storage array.
Implemented architectures with no single points of hardware failure.
Sold system through indirect or OEM channels, maintained brand awareness with end users, and had an average selling price of more than $24,999.
Vendor Criteria:
Annual company revenue of $50 million or more.
A multinational presence and 24/7 support capabilities.
The inclusion of dual-controller, scale-out and high-end storage systems in the same Magic Quadrant does not imply that the differences in usable availability, scalability, performance/throughput and functionality in these different architectural approaches are insignificant.

Quadrant Descriptions
LeadersVendors in the Leaders quadrant have the highest composite scores for their Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. A vendor in the Leaders quadrant has the market share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. These vendors demonstrate a clear understanding of market needs. They are innovators and thought leaders with well-articulated plans that customers and prospects can use when designing their storage infrastructures and strategies. In addition, they have a presence in the five major geographical regions, consistent financial performance and broad platform support.
ChallengersVendors in the Challengers quadrant participate in the broad GPDA market and execute well enough to be a serious threat to vendors in the Leaders quadrant. Challengers have strong products, as well as a sufficiently credible market position and resources to sustain continued growth. Financial viability is not an issue for vendors in the Challengers quadrant; however, they lack the size and influence of vendors in the Leaders quadrant.
VisionariesVendors in the Visionaries quadrant deliver innovative products that address operationally or financially important end-user problems on a broad scale, but have not yet demonstrated the ability to capture market share or sustainable profitability. Visionary vendors are frequently privately held companies and acquisition targets for larger, established companies. The likelihood of acquisition often reduces the real versus perceived risks associated with installing their systems.
Niche PlayersVendors in the Niche Players quadrant are often narrowly focused on specific markets or vertical segments, such as data warehousing; HPC; low-cost, disk-based data retention; and other areas that are generally underpenetrated by the larger disk array vendors. This quadrant may also include vendors that are ramping up their disk array offerings, or larger vendors that are having difficulty developing and executing on their vision.
Context
This Magic Quadrant represents vendors that sell into the end-user market with branded general-purpose disk and hybrid arrays. These arrays may be internally developed, or acquired through an acquisition or OEM agreement. Tight budgets and skills shortages have caused vendors and users to focus on technologies and features that lower acquisition and ownership costs, while improving performance and throughput. This has resulted in thin-provisioning, autotiering, hybrid configurations (Flash and HDDs) and near-autonomic operation becoming ubiquitous in GPDAs. It is also driving the deployment of SSAs into I/O-intensive environments and creating opportunities for emerging storage companies that can refactor infrastructure designs to obtain incremental improvements in performance, economics and staff productivity.Examples include hyperconverged integrated systems (HCISs), SDS and cloud gateways that make it practical to implement hybrid on-premises/public clouds. Concerns with security exposures and meeting ever-more-stringent regulatory requirements are now making SEDs generally available.
Market Overview
The GPDA market is declining on a revenue and unit basis, even as capacity shipped continues to grow. This has made vendors more aggressive and innovative as they attempt to grow market share and expand into tangential markets, such as HCIS and hybrid cloud. Customer satisfaction is high, with 77% of customers completely satisfied and fewer than 6% unsatisfied with their GPDA providers, per reference checks conducted for this research. Not surprisingly, storage connection protocol usage remains essentially unchanged. The top three used by customers are FC (47%), iSCSI (15%) and NAS (23%), with 15% using other protocols, such as SAS, FCoE and InfiniBand. The virtualization of more than 80% of user applications and improvements in technology has led users to treat high-end, midrange and NAS systems as roughly equivalent. This practical parity, coupled with tight budgets, insatiable storage demand and improved DR capabilities, has led many users to allow them to compete against each other — even in business-critical environments.Emerging storage vendors are indirectly influencing the market by using innovation to influence large, established storage vendors. Some of these storage and portfolio vendors are using these emerging storage companies as their primary source of product innovation.Gartner expects the advantages of traditional, high-end enterprise storage arrays to continue to disappear during the next three to five years, as scale-out storage arrays, integrated platforms and infrastructure SDS gain maturity, market share and mind share. However, we do not see the midrange and high-end market segments collapsing into a single market, because of prior investments in troubleshooting capabilities and compatibility testing.
Evaluation Criteria Definitions
Ability to ExecuteProduct/Service: Core goods and services offered by the vendor for the defined market. This includes current product/service capabilities, quality, feature sets, skills and so on, whether offered natively or through OEM agreements/partnerships as defined in the market definition and detailed in the subcriteria.Overall Viability: Viability includes an assessment of the overall organization's financial health, the financial and practical success of the business unit, and the likelihood that the individual business unit will continue investing in the product, will continue offering the product and will advance the state of the art within the organization's portfolio of products.Sales Execution/Pricing: The vendor's capabilities in all presales activities and the structure that supports them. This includes deal management, pricing and negotiation, presales support, and the overall effectiveness of the sales channel.Market Responsiveness/Record: Ability to respond, change direction, be flexible and achieve competitive success as opportunities develop, competitors act, customer needs evolve and market dynamics change. This criterion also considers the vendor's history of responsiveness.Marketing Execution: The clarity, quality, creativity and efficacy of programs designed to deliver the organization's message to influence the market, promote the brand and business, increase awareness of the products, and establish a positive identification with the product/brand and organization in the minds of buyers. Hotel Artemis Movie Review | ScreenRant

Hotel Artemis makes for an intriguing exercise in pulpy sci-fi noir, even though the film’s story leaves something to be desired.
Hotel Artemis is an unusual mashup of science-fiction and noir in the sense that it’s more classic noir than it is modern sci-fi. The film’s concept was interesting enough to get Jodie Foster to return to the big screen for the first time in five years and further succeeded in attracting an A-grade ensemble of character actors and rising stars. Director Drew Pearce (making his feature debut) is a ways away from his days writing box office friendly movies like Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, but he’s also more willing to takes risks here – some of which even pan out. Hotel Artemis makes for an intriguing exercise in pulpy sci-fi noir, even though the film’s story leaves something to be desired.
The year is 2028 and Los Angeles finds itself rocked by the biggest riot in recent history. When two brothers and lifelong crooks (Sterling K. Brown and Brian Tyree Henry) take advantage of the chaos to rob a high-security bank, they end up getting caught in the crossfire and badly injured during their escape. That leaves them with just one place to go: Hotel Artemis, a thirteen-story hospital for criminals that’s members-only and adheres to a strict set of rules laid down by its proprietor, whom most people know as simply “The Nurse” (Foster).
With guests that include a deadly French assassin (Sofia Boutella) and an aggressive arms dealer (Charlie Day), The Nurse has plenty on her plate to deal with, even before the two brothers show up at her door. Things become all the more complicated when a woman from The Nurse’s past (Jenny Slate) later shows up severely wounded, around the same time that Nurse gets a phone call telling her that The Wolf King (Jeff Goldblum) – the crime boss who essentially runs LA these days – is on his way to pay her a visit. It looks like it’s going to be a very busy night at the Artemis after all.
Certain aspects of Hotel Artemis bring to mind recent genre movies like John Wick and The Purge, but for the most part their similarities are surface-level only. If anything, Hotel Artemis takes more of its inspiration from the hard-boiled crime narratives that were all the rage in the 1940s and ’50s, in both film and literature. Like those works, Hotel Artemis paints a bleak portrait of society and serves up social commentary through the lens of crime thriller tropes and conventions. Admittedly though, the story being told here isn’t all that interesting on its own and relies too heavily on contrivances and coincidences for its own good. What really keeps the film absorbing is the fictional universe it takes place in and, especially, the people who live there.
Hotel Artemis is similarly messy, but effective, when it comes to world-building. The film reveals just enough about the seedy, yet distinctly futuristic underworld in which it take place to serve its story, without going overboard with explanations about what led to the current state of things in the world or how its shiny new technology (holograms, machines that “print” human organs) came to be. Pearce’s film doesn’t have the rich lore that the John Wick movies have, but it’s also not focused on exploring the minutiae of its criminals and professional killers’ lives the way that series is. Rather, Hotel Artemis is about how everyday people learn to adapt and keep living their lives, even when the world around them is going to hell in a hand-basket.
That approach only works because the film’s many characters are compelling variations on noir archetypes. Foster naturally gets the meatiest role here as Nurse – an older woman who struggles with anxiety and a past that she cannot escape – but Brown, Boutella, and Day are all equally good and know exactly which notes to strike in their parts (be it emotionally dramatic, hammy, or intense). Dave Bautista also does solid work as The Nurse’s burly, yet sensitive associate Everest, while Goldblum shows up to deliver lines in the way that only he can as the ever-cool King of Los Angeles. If there’s a weak spot in the film’s cast, it might be Zachary Quinto, who never quite settles into playing The Wolf King’s emasculated son.

Hotel Artemis successfully takes its time to develop its characters and flesh out their relationships over the course of its first (slow burn) two-thirds, before ramping things up in the final act. Peace and IT cinematographer Chung-hoo Chung further establish a grungy noir aesthetic early on and photograph the titular set piece in a way that makes it seems truly lived-in, even with the film’s (at times, obvious) budget constraints. The quiet buildup ultimately pays off in a violent finale that includes some creatively grisly deaths and staged action, which is further aided by the film’s moody and propulsive Cliff Martinez score. Hotel Artemis doesn’t take too long in getting to its final destination either, thanks to the movie’s tight runtime.
All things considered, Hotel Artemis is an uneven but enjoyably weird mashup of noir conventions and sci-fi dystopia led by a cast of great actors in roles that seem almost tailor-made for them (and may well have been). At the same time, the film’ story is one of its weakest elements and its setting, while fascinating on its own, isn’t ripe for further exploration in the way that the world of John Wick or even The Purge is. Pearce makes a solid directorial debut with his efforts here even though, as these criticisms call attention to, he’s just starting to find his voice as a storyteller. As such, Hotel Artemis might not be the place for an extended stay, but it’s worth paying a visit to – be it from the comfort of your home or in a theater.
