You chuckled at your friend’s joke. Everyone else was laughing their asses off and you couldn’t stop smiling. You hadn’t felt that stress-free in a long time.
It was rare for all of you to be together. The past semester had been exhausting for every single one of your little squad and you hadn’t had time to meet up outside school. So, when the chance came, no one hesitated to take it. That’s how you ended up in the restaurant you were in now, drinking and catching up with each other. The new semester would start soon and you were trying to get everything out of the last few days of freedom.
“I couldn’t stop laughing that time,” one of your male friends was wiping tears from his eyes. He had told you all a story of how a lecturer had casually walked in barefooted.
“Somehow, I can see you being like that though,” one of your female friends nudged him teasingly and earned a look from him.
“Me?” he looked surprised.
“We all know how easily you forget things,” she chuckled and he snorted.
They continued arguing for a bit and the rest of you naturally started conversations with each other. It was nothing new to see the two bickering.
“Are you still with Johnny?” one of your friends asked and you smiled.
“Yeah,” you beamed. Even the mention of him was enough to make you feel happy.
“Lucky you,” your other friend said with envy. “I want to date too… Why is no one interested in me?” she pouted.
She was one of those people who had always been quite insecure about herself - for no reason - and she had had her share of short, totally unnecessary relationships.
“I know someone who is,” your friend said and leaned closer to the insecure one. “I’ll always love you babe~” she joked. She had always been like that, confident and chill.
You watched your friends with a smile on your lips. Just being around them really cheered you up.
Your phone vibrated in your jeans’ pocket. Calmly, you reached in to the pocket and pulled it out thinking it would be a text from your boyfriend.
Well, there was a text from him. He wanted to know if you wanted to have a date tomorrow. But it wasn’t the only thing there.
Mom?
With a confused frown, you opened the text your mother had sent you.
Honey, I think you should come home. I know you are about to start a new semester and you’ll get busy soon but this is very serious.
After reading the text you felt a little scared. Did you even want to know what had happened?
Your father collapsed at work. He’s in the hospital and it seems like he will have to stay there for a while… The doctors are saying it shouldn’t be too serious but I’m worried about what will happen if it turns out to be something serious… I think you should come home, dear.
Suddenly, you felt like a big stone had been placed on top of your heart. It ached in a very unpleasant way.
“_____?” a friend called your name. “Is everything okay?”
You lifted your head and looked at him with a serious expression. Everyone looked at you worriedly. “I think I should go… I… Something came up,” you said and got up from your seat.
“I’ll go with-“ you cut him off before he could finish.
“No, please don’t. You should all enjoy the evening. This is nothing serious,” you lied with the worst don’t-worry-about-me face you had ever made. “See you,” you waved to them and quickly got out of the restaurant.
***
When you knocked on the door it felt like you were in a dream. Your vision was slightly blurry and you felt like you were floating. While standing there your mind went blank. Unlike on your way there, your mind was completely blank. When you had walked there you had been thinking about what you should do - should you go home which you weren’t sure you could afford now or should you stay and pray that your father would be okay - and now you just stood silently, waiting for the door to open in front of you. Eventually, after a wait that had felt like a forever, the door was opened.
Johnny’s surprised expression was the first thing you saw. Then you saw his outfit that consisted of a t-shirt and shorts - his usual hanging-out-and-relaxing outfit - and in the end your eyes found the messy apartment behind his figure.
“Don’t look there, you have no right to judge me, I wasn’t expecting you to stop by today,” he tried to block your vision and looked very serious.
You normally would have responded to that so he grew worried when you didn’t say anything and just looked at him instead.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“What should I do?” you answered with a question.
He frowned in confusion.
“I don’t know what to do,” you said. You didn’t really feel like crying and your eyes weren’t teary but you had a lump in your throat. It made breathing and talking a little hard.
“I think you should come inside despite how messy it is because it seems like this is really serious,” he gently grabbed your hand and pulled you inside the dimly lit apartment of his. Usually he had friends over but not tonight, apparently, because the apartment was relatively silent. Sure, the TV was on in the living room but there were no loud screams or yells coming from there. With that you concluded that he had been spending the night alone.
After switching on the lights in the living room he took you to the couch he had been lounging on - you could tell from how warm the spot you sat on, was. Then he went to the kitchen and soon came back with a bottle of water. He handed the drink to you before sitting down next to you.
“Tell me everything,” he said and lifted your legs on his lap - something he liked to do.
You took an unintendedly shaky breath. “I was drinking with friends and got a message. It was from my mom. She told me that dad collapsed.”
Johnny’s expression showed worry and you took your phone out to show him the messages.
“She wants me to go home,” you told him before handing the phone to him. “And I have no idea what to do. I’m not sure if I could afford going home right now, given that I don’t have much money and the new semester is just about to start… But I’m really worried about dad…”
Johnny read the messages and gave the phone back to you.
“What if it’s something serious? Like… what if it turns out that he has only a few days to live and I won’t be able to say goodbye to him and… I don’t know… I’m scared I’ll regret it for the rest of my life if I don’t go… But I don’t have money and it’ll mess up my studies… But what if he ends up dying?”
“Listen,” he gently grabbed your hand that had been resting on your knee and looked at you in the eyes. “I’m not sure if you’re over reacting because you’re tipsy or if you are seriously that worried but I doubt it’s going to end up like that. If it was that serious, I feel like they would have discovered it earlier. So, please just breathe. You’ll be the next one to collapse if you don’t calm down.”
Just looking at him calmed you down. His expression was so comforting and the tone he spoke with was warm and comforting too. He made you feel very secure. Like everything would be okay.
“Even though I feel like it probably won’t be extremely serious, I still think you should go,” he said calmly. “Serious or not so serious, he collapsed. I think it’s better to be safe than sorry. I’m ready to pay for a part of your plane ticket if you don’t have enough money.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course,” he smiled. “I don’t think I have enough to pay for the whole ticket but I’m more than ready to give all I have for you. And don’t worry about your studies, I’m sure everyone will understand. Besides, who cares if you miss a few of the first lectures? No one will notice. I will go in your place.”
“What about your own studies? I thought your schedule is packed next semester.”
“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you,” he was serious but made it sound cheesy.
“Everyone would notice that you aren’t me,” you pointed out the obvious. There was no denying that you two were quite different appearance-wise.
“I look a lot like you,” he said shamelessly.
You couldn’t help but smile.
“There it is,” he sounded pleased and smiled. “Your beautiful smile~”
“That sounded so greasy,” you chuckled while cringing.
“It was the truth though,” he smiled smugly and pecked your lips.
You just looked at him with a small smile. Once again, he had been able to change your mood completely. Just a few minutes earlier you had been really stressed and now you were smiling.
“Am I that handsome?” he asked when you just kept staring at him. “You just cannot look away?”
You just smiled.
“Really?” he looked surprised and pleased.
“You should really clean up this mess,” you teased him with the one thing he didn’t want to hear.
“_____,” he whined immediately. “Not this again.”
You chuckled. You had no intention of nagging, you just wanted to tease him.
“I swear I clean in here every day. You just happen to come here whenever I haven’t cleaned yet,” he explained.
“I know,” you laughed.
