i wonder if mike thought about kim ever. when jesse threw himself in front of walt in the desert, i wonder if he thought about kim. did he see her that night, the hoodie and the gun and the tearful determination, while they sat in the lab and waited for gus? did he see her in that junkyard, watching the laptop splinter into a million pieces, jumping and cheering?? two lost souls who gave Everything and got shattered in return??? one day you’ll wake up and realize you haven’t thought about it, but do you ever really? do you ever really forget? maybe you can’t, when you’re working for a time bomb. “what is it with you guys?” don’t know. i wonder if mike ever thought about kim.

breaking bad passes the gay man’s version of the bechdel test because
1. it has two gay male characters (gale boetticher, gustavo fring)
2. who talk to each other (flashback of gale setting up the superlab)
3. about a man (heisenberg)

jess being the shortstop is driving me insane. like they don’t really show it onscreen (which is a shame! but runtimes i get it) but shortstops are literally the heart of the team. they’re the ones calling out the pitch count and reminding people where the play is. more often than not they’re the cutoff from the outfield. they back up the pitcher and the third baseman AND they cover both second and third. second base is the most stolen base bc it’s the furthest from home plate and therefore the hardest to throw out, and shortstop usually covers second when a steal is being made. most right hand batters pull to left field so they tend to get the most action. due to being between second and third if there’s a double play being turned they’re usually a part of it one way or another. they get hard liners and grounders as well as the occasional easy pop-up so they’re always on their toes and usually fielding the most difficult hits
also the pitcher/shortstop dynamic is soooo important. yes pitcher/catcher dynamic we get it but most of the time pitchers are too focused on pitching to be able to field well, especially because any ball that comes their way is gonna be hot due to the fact that pitchers are the closest fielder to the batter. shortstop covers the pitcher when they don’t have time to pull out of the pitch follow-through. they charge the ball when a bunt happens bc the pitcher doesn’t have time to react quick enough. they’re the one who reminds the pitcher where they’re at in the count and encourages them. it’s easier for shortstop to get to the mound than the catcher so often shortstop is the one going to the pitcher to reassure them if they’re having a hard time. they’re the fielder for the pitcher so that the pitcher only has to focus on throwing strikes. do you get what i’m saying. jesslupe nation are you picking up what i’m putting down here. do you understand why i’m going crazy about this.
basically what i’m saying is jess being shortstop just makes sense bc she is always there looking out for everyone and backing everyone up (but especially lupe), casually covering the most ground without thought, simultaneously light on her feet and a solid brick wall as the occasion calls for, covering the hole, leading the team from behind. you can’t be a shortstop without being a team player, and you don’t have a team unless you have a strong shortstop on the diamond 🥲

i was sifting through a bunch of jesse hate (for an edit not bc i’m obsessed😭) and the gist of what i got was just. a willful misunderstanding of his character, his trauma, and his naivety/innocence in regards to his age/the power imbalance present within his relationship with walt and like. almost everyone else on the show.
obviously all of the people that loathe him and have paragraphs upon paragraphs of misinterpretations & simplifications of his arc to spew online are all people that love & identify with walter (surprise surprise), but i feel like it’s also so very reminiscent of the shit i noticed these last two years with certain media where a large portion of audience is both too stupid to recognize nuances present in writing & leans heavily on their confirmation bias.
and on that note, what was not shocking to me was how many of these complaints could be boiled down to him getting in walt’s way, making things more difficult for walt, or subverting walt’s authority. it’s incredibly similar to the hatred for skyler that has only recently begun to taper off (or at least take different forms or been redirected to other characters - like jane). jesse shares significantly more similarities with female characters in brba than any male character, and i think it’s only because he is not a woman (whereas skyler is) that jesse hate was not more prevalent while the show was airing/i see more of it now than ever.
jesse is a pussy, he’s a little bitch, he’s weak, he cries too much - because it’s not “manly” for him to feel remorse and to be destroyed by guilt. when he self destructs it’s selfish and when he lashes out he’s ungrateful. never mind the fact that he has been through more than enough to deeply traumatize even the most well adjusted individual by s3, much less at the end of his captivity by s5. with no one to turn to, no one to talk to, no one to comfort him. he’s neglected time and time again by the man who, from the very beginning, violated & disrespected his boundaries, his belongings, his personal life, his home, his time & has (both intentionally and unintentionally) methodically chipped away at any meaningful relationship jesse had or could have & left him with nothing but Him, nurturing a deadly codependency. he has at least two members of walt’s family being projected onto him as well as the role of a student & business partner. perfect obedience & perfect fulfillment of these roles is expected, but not praised.
would you not also be a little bitchy sometimes? do impulsive & risky things to gain attention or love or some semblance of power in your otherwise powerless life? would you not fall prey to fleeting affection given by a dying man (with the same sickness as your late aunt that you shared a home with and loved so dearly that you spent her remaining time on this earth by her side, taking care of her) when that affection is so heady? when you have nothing and no one else??
it always circles back around to “he knew what he was getting into”, “he deserved xyz”, “he could have stopped at any time”, and “why didn’t he just leave” - just like with skyler. i don’t think i have to explain why those comments are so disturbing & i don’t think it’s difficult at all to understand why he cries or bitches so much…
anyway, i’ll conclude this post with these quotes because i think it says a lot that the only character vince remembers the audience hating so much is skyler -

jess is dog coded but he has the entire personality of a feral rescued cat that doesnt know how to meow and so hisses and yowls at everything even after its calmed down and domesticated. So what im saying is that he has the narrative functions of being dog coded (specifically a stray dog dog-eat-dog world dog “Just tell her I’m a dog” dog) but like he’s also jumping 10 feet in the air when he gets startled and likes to sit in rory’s lap and pretends he doesn’t care about anything but. actually. he cares a lot about everything. on accident. and when he gets embarrassed he is so mad about it too. do you understand

sorry if you’ve already answered that but how do you write first sentences of your stories/scenes? they’re always so interesting and feel very natural, i was wondering if you could share some tips if you have any
omg I actually DO have a tip for this!! The advice that I’ve been given - and that I try to follow - is that an opening line should have two things: clarity and curiosity. You might think those two are contradictory but they’re not!! For an opening line to work, you need to 1) give your reader some information so they don’t feel totally lost but 2) give them something to chew on or to question; that way, they’ll want to read more!!
Let’s take, for instance, one of my latest fics Room Service. Here’s that opening line:
Room 304 ordered room service.
At first, you would think it doesn’t have a lot to go off of. But, in just this one five sentence line, we know that our setting is a hotel, and we know that there’s someone in a hotel room ordering room service. So there’s your clarity!! And we also have the question “what did they order?” and also “who are they?” so there’s your question!!
Or, for example, we could look at my fic For Ransom:
Kidnapping Ashton Irwin is not nearly as hard as Calum thought it would be.
In this opening line, we have the clarity of characters, of a specific action, and also a specific tone/character voice in “not nearly as hard.” We then, as readers, beg the questions of 1) why is calum kidnapping him and 2) why isn’t it hard?
When you write an opening line, have a little list in your head of what you 1) want your reader to automatically know about your story to make them feel integrated and 2) what you want your reader to want to know about your story so they want to keep reading !!
Writing opening lines is one of my favorite parts of the process so I’m glad you asked!!! I hope this helped at all :)

I was talking to my psychiatrist today about how my transition is going, mostly talking about “T rage,” and he said “I can see a scene in a movie where a character goes ‘yo bitch I’m T raging!’” I said that sounded like something Jesse Pinkman would say and he thought that was HILARIOUS so anyway transmasc Jesse real
