Saw someone call american psycho (the book) gore porn n thought abt it for a while. dont like the term torture porn or gore porn in general, i think people should just say that it disgusted them. and the book is trying to do that a lot of the time it’s way more graphic than the movie. n the movie probably refrained from the more violent scenes to keep the comedic tone and have people not turn it off halfway through when patrick stabs a homeless guy or kills his ex gf by splitting her skull open yk. because i did have to stop reading at some points. but i also remember the book more vividly than i do the movie despite only having read it once. so whatever the book was trying to do it succeeds in doing, even if it’s gross how it goes about it. and it’s still humorous either way just seeing how patrick thinks and acts and how fragile his ego is. i dont think something can be torture porn if the entire point of the book is how this dude is a satirical caricature of the modern Wall street rich guy with a shallow life that means nothing to him and even being blatantly unhinged at times, he can get away with appearing normal to others bc the people around him aren’t even better than him or act any differently than him. i dont think gore porn (in terms of criticizing fiction for making you uncomfortable, obviously gore porn exists but these things are not it) even exists like ok is Saw torture porn then… no because the point of the torture is to scare you . the point of everything is to make you feel something or think abt something. what’s wrong with disgust.
