i’m reading mister impossible and i can’t stop thinking about the brothers lynch and niall’s irish folktales about the heroes and their geasa and bryde saying to ronan you’re a hero. enjoy it. and declan saying what’s important to you? i wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t important. and how the choice was death or hurting adam which wasn’t much of a choice at all and how the best geasa in niall and aurora’s stories were the ones that collaborated to agonizingly trap the heroes at the end and ronan waking to a barn full of wheels going nowhere, each one reading tamquam

happy birthday!!! feel like the tdt series really covers the range of adulthood (despite only being a few years into it myself) but also wanted to second that tdt experience of how it can be rough figuring it out at first, but eventually u start to pick up all the little bits and pieces and understand it and urself so much better.
the dreamer trilogy is truly a masterpiece and i honestly sometimes feel really sad that some people just don’t like it. it’s def different than trc but i think it has the same soul !
i think the perspective maggie is writing from is one that i haven’t really seen a lot in media. as a chronically ill, isolated, new adult myself, reading tdt felt like reading a more magical version of my life & it was so goddamn good i think about it everyday of my life (i did a lengthy analysis of this). i think maybe if you haven’t had a lot of experience with health issues/mental health issues severely impacting your ability to live like other people your age you may not have as much appreciation for the story, but i truly think tdt is a story that all people (especially those transitioning into adulthood) can relate to.
tdt captures how terrible and beautiful and ugly and freeing transitioning from childhood to adulthood is & the books (& ronan and hennessy and declan in particular) will always hold a special place in my heart

This was my actual first drawing for The Dreamer Trilogy, back in 2019 when I first read the book.
Commissions info
Tumblr media
Edit: I like to think of this drawing as “Apathy in the face of Despair,” as Hennessy is drowning in nightwash. It is pretty much a visual metaphor for depression. I wanted to make the black goo be something extremely thick, like tar, but I also wanted it to feel like something flammable, like gasoline. That is why I love the image of Hennessy drowning in this thick, flammable shit yet still choosing to light a cig because she would much rather feel the pleasure of taking a smoke than acknowledge the goo that surrounds her. The fact that she doesn’t give a fuck is a testament to how deep in this shit she is already.
I am fond of this drawing because when I did it I was actually in quite a good place emotionally, still I empathized with Hennessy so deeply that I just needed to get it out of my system. That is probably what I love the most about Maggie’s writing, just how raw and honest her characters feel. How real they are, to the point where I can empathize with each one of them even when I haven’t gone through the things they’ve gone through.

Thank you for the tag, @tinyarmedtrex!! 🥰
How many works do you have on ao3? 94
What’s your total ao3 word count? 1,010,236
What fandoms do you write for? The Raven Cycle/The Dreamer Trilogy
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Boxes on the Lawn Open Door 𝜋 Going Back to These Origins Chasing Tails
Do you respond to comments? I do. I made a decision a few months ago to mark old comments I hadn’t responded to as read to “reset” my inbox, and since then, the much lower number has caused me a lot less anxiety and I’ve been pretty quick with responding to comments.
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably my Addie LaRue AU, simply because it doesn’t have a traditional happy ending.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I love a HEA/HFN, so almost all my fics have happy endings.
Do you get hate on fics? I have once, and the person was a coward and deleted their comment.
Do you write smut? I do.
Do you write crossovers? I don’t. The things I like enough to write fanfic for would make the oddest, most complicated crossovers, so I haven’t even thought about it.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I’m aware of.
Have you ever had a fic translated? No, but I’ve had one podfic’d!
Have you ever co written a fic? I haven’t yet, no.
What’s your all time favourite ship? Pynch. Obviously. 😂
What’s a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a bunch of stuff in notebooks that are single chapters/parts of chapters/middles of fics that will never see the light of day again. So I’ll say those.
What are your writing strengths? I think I'm pretty good with pacing, and hitting the right emotional beats/getting readers to feel what I want them to feel at specific points. And I think I'm damn good at writing a unique meet-cute.
What are your writing weaknesses? I never think I include enough dialogue.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I’ve thrown some Latin in here and there, but for ease of writing/reading and not taking a reader out of the fic by having to go translate something, I typically don’t include anything in another language.
First fandom you wrote for? Simple Plan/Hott Baguettes
Favourite fic you’ve ever written? Too many! It literally changes by the week.
Tagging @clotpolesonly, @zephfair, @audikatia, and @emmerrr if any of you are up for it. 🥰

oh my god I read trc back before trk came out and it was the reason I joined tumblr in the first place. 13 year old me was SUCH a declan girlie and now seeing your dreamer trilogy posts is making me want to read it even though i didnt even know they existed until like two days ago. is it worth it? or is the trilogy best enjoyed in snapshots off of tumblr?
If you’re a Declan girlie (as am I!), I would wholeheartedly recommend trying the Dreamer Trilogy.  He kind of steals the show.  I haven’t finished reading the whole series yet, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far!  It doesn’t undo any of the development in TRC and it feels like a very natural progression for the Lynch brothers (and by extension, Adam) imo.  Mostly it’s just a different vibe and I would say that there’s one or two new characters that I’m not heavily invested in… whereas I’m obsessed with everyone in TRC and every chapter is golden lol.  So, I think if you go into it with the right expectations (i.e. knowing it’s not going to be full of gangsey adventure times) and embrace it for what it is - a Lynch brothers story - it can be a fun experience. :)

Mac's Backs Small Business Saturday Event November 26, 2022
Recommended Reading Buying
Looking for a present this holiday season? Buying my books? Buy them from Mac’s Backs or Loganberry Books and I’ll be happy to personalize them.
If you know someone who already has everything I’ve ever published, maybe consider the books listed below. I’ve asked Mac’s Backs to have them on hand this weekend for Small Business Saturday. I had to throw the list together in a hurry, so it’s not exactly extensive or cohesive but these are all books that I like and that I think someone who likes my books might like.
Some of them come with caveats. Some of them are for older or younger readers. I loved (really loved) The Library at Mount Char but it is violent and gruesome and is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Update: the owner of Mac’s Backs pointed out Hell Bent and The Stolen Heir don’t come out until January which makes be very sad because I was sort of hoping to get them for Christmas. I’ll have to spend my Christmas money on them, I guess.
Last year, when I saw that Book Moon Bookstore was recommending TLAMC, I bought a copy for a friend. My friend loves Kelly Link's work like I do, so I asked Kelly, as Book Moon owner, author extraordinaire and MacArthur winner, to write her recommendation inside Hawkins book.
If you’d like me to write a recommendation into any of these books, order them from Mac's Backs and I'll be happy to add my 2 cents.
Children of Ragnarok–Cinda William’s Chima
The Ones We Burn–Rebecca Mix
Deadly Education–Naomi Novik
Gideon the Ninth–Tamsyn Muir
Strange the Dreamer–Laini Taylor
Girl of Fire and Thorns–Rae Carson
The Serial Garden–Joan Aiken
Baba Yaga’s Assitant –Marika McCoola–Art by Emily Carrol
(truth in advertising: I haven’t read Baba Yaga yet, but it comes highly recommended and if Mac’s Backs gets a copy and no one else wants it, I am buying it.)
On the Younger Side
Stand on the Sky–Erin Bow
The Year I Flew Away–Marie Arnold
On the Older Side
The Last Samurai–Helen DeWitt
Rook–Danial O'Malley
The Library at Mount Char –Scott Hawkins
Children of Ragnarok–Cinda William’s Chima
A post-apocalyptic novel where the apocalypse was Ragnarok.
If you liked my undersized thief with impulse control problems, you really might enjoy Cinda’s beefy young Viking with even more significant impulse control problems.
The Ones We Burn–Rebecca Mix
Know a fan of Hannah Whitten’s One for the Wolf? Hannah called Mix’s book “Romantic, brutal, and hopeful.”
A Deadly Education--Naomi Novik
I probably don’t have to say anything about Novik’s Scholamance trilogy. So I’ll just say I got The Golden Sutras the day it came out and I’m so glad she writes faster than I do.
Strange the Dreamer–Laini Taylor
Lani’s writing is like flourless chocolate cake with 24 karat gold foil decorations–unbelievably rich.
“The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it.”
Girl of Fire and Thorns–Rae Carson
"Elisa was born with a godstone, an undeniable sign of the god’s approval and yet there is no sign that she is special in any other way. A princess, she should command respect, instead she is a seething bundle of self doubt as she travels to meet her future husband, King Alejandro de Vega of Joya d'Arena."
I like my anxious characters who are outrageously competent. I like bunnies that turn out to be lions.
Baba Yaga’s Assitant–Marika McCoola–Art by Emily Carrol
(truth in advertising: I haven’t read Baba Yaga yet, but it comes highly recommended and if Mac’s Backs gets a copy and no one else wants it, I am buying it.)
On the Younger Side
Stand on the Sky–Erin Bow
Just a heads up, there’s no magic in this one and it’s not science fiction like Erin’s Scorpion Rules. Erin spent months in Mongolia doing research– the setting of the book is not mythic historical Mongolia– it’s Mongolia with a lot of history and also cell phones.
“It goes against all tradition for Aisulu to train an eagle, for among the Kazakh nomads, only men can fly them. But everything changes when Aisulu discovers that her brother, Serik, has been concealing a bad limp that risks not just his future as the family’s leader, but his life too.”
On the Older Side
The Last Samurai–Helen DeWitt
This is LITERATURE. Okay, I don’t actually know what constitutes Literature with all caps, but I don’t want you to be disappointed when you pick this up and it’s slow and weird and you don’t know why I recommended it. I am recommending it because once you immerse yourself in the slow and the weird and the stream of consciousness this is a genius book about a genius and her even more genius child and his quest to discover which one of seven potential sperm donors is his father and it has absolutely nothing to do with the Tom Cruise movie and it is genius.
Rook–Danial O'Malley
A friend pointed me in the direction of Rook. I said, oh, la la la, secret bureau of supernatural affairs in London, I have seen this before and I am so grateful to my friend who said NO. YOU HAVE NOT.
“The body you are wearing used to be mine.”
So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.
The very best thing about recommending this book is that @shaelit saw the recommendation and told me that there’s a new book in the series! Woo hoo!
The Library at Mount Char –Scott Hawkins
Again, I don’t want you to be disappointed, or in this case, I don’t want you to be horrified and think omg Megan recommended this book? Yes, it is gruesome. Yes, there is violence and yes, violence involving children and yes, I entirely understand why it might not be your cup of tea. I deeply appreciate the fact that the book starts as it means to go on. If you read the first few pages and you are put off, please go read something else! That said … I loved it. I can’t tell you why, but if you read it, you’ll probably guess.
***
I’m adding one more The Unbroken by CL Clark. I’m reading it right now and enjoying it very much.

Ok so I want to finally annotate my raven cycle books on my next reread. And I want to add a little symbol at the beginning of each chapter to show who’s pov it is.
And for Gansey I was thinking a little crown, pretty self-explanatory and for Adam either a vine or that infinity symbol that’s on the magician tarot card.
But for the others I have pretty much no idea
Like for Blue maybe a cup for her tarot card? But eh
A sword for Ronan? (I haven’t read the dreamer trilogy yet so please don’t spoil anything. I am very good at procrastinating. But he is holding a sword on the cover of mister impossible so maybe?)
It feels a little mean to use a skateboard for Noah seeing as that was used to murder him.
And what about the gray man, the Greenmantle’s and the other side characters?
Now keep in mind my drawing skills are pretty shit but are there any other obvious one’s that I am missing?

reading raven cycle again (can u believe i haven’t done my annual read of 2022…) and it just kind of struck me how uniquely magical it is… like i knoooow the atmosphere of the dreamer trilogy is intentionally the way it is, but it just lost so much magic for me,, i love the characters! i think the plot is interesting enough! but nothing beats a group of magic-adjacent teens wandering around in the virginia woods and falling in love with each other. the books fill me with wonder but in a way that’s just so… warm. like coming home.
