Commemorated on Saturday of the 1st week of the Great Lent, February 17_by the new calendar

The Holy Martyr Theodore of Tyre “ the Recruit” ( 306)

     The Holy Martyr Theodore of Tyre was a soldier in the city of Alasium of the Pontine district (northeast province of Asia Minor, stretching alongside the coast of the Pontus Euxine, i.e. the Black Sea), under the command of a certain Brincus. They commanded him to offer sacrifice to idols. Saint Theodore firmly and in a loud voice confessed his faith in Christ the Saviour. The commander gave him several days to think it over, during which time Saint Theodore prayed intensely. They charged him with setting afire a pagan temple and threw him into prison for death by starvation. The Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him there, comforting and encouraging him. Brought again to the governor, Saint Theodore yet once more boldly and fearlessly confessed his faith, for which he was subjected to new torments and condemned to burning. The martyr Theodore without hesitation climbed onto the bon-fire and with prayer and laudation gave up his holy soul to God.      This occurred in about the year 306 under the Roman emperor Gallerius (305-311). Unharmed by the fire, the body of Saint Theodore was buried in the city of Eukhaitakheia, not far from Amasium. His relics were afterwards transferred to Tsar'grad, to a church dedicated to his name. His head is situated in Italy, in the city of Gaeto.

     Later on, 50 years after the martyr's death of Saint Theodore, the emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), wanting to commit an outrage upon the christians, commanded the city-commander of Constantinople during the first week of Great Lent to sprinkle all the food provisions in the market-places with the blood of idol-sacrifices. Saint Theodore, having appeared in a dream to archbishop Eudoxios, ordered him to inform all the christians, – that no one should buy anything at the market-places, but rather to eat cooked wheat with honey – kolivo ( kut'ya or sochivo). In memory of this occurrence the Orthodox Church annually makes celebration of the holy GreatMartyr Theodore of Tyre on Saturday of the first week of Great Lent. On the eve of Saturday, on Friday, in the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts after the amvon prayer there is read the molieben-kanon to the holy GreatMartyr Theodore, compiled by the monk John Damascene. After this, kolivo is blessed and distributed to the faithful. The celebration to the GreatMartyr Theodore on Saturday of the first week of Great Lent was set by the Patriarch of Constantinople Nektarios (381-397).

The Monk Paul the Simple (4th c.)

     The Monk Paul the Simple lived in the IV Century. He was called Simple for his simplicity of heart and gentleness. The monk had been married, but having learned about the infidelity of his spouse, he left her and set off into the wilderness to the Monk Anthony the Great (Comm. 17 January). Paul was already 60 years old, and Saint Anthony at first did not accept Paul, since he was unfit for harshness of the hermit's life. Paul stood at the cell of the ascetic for three days, saying that he would sooner die than go from there. Then the Monk Anthony settled Paul in with him, and long tested his endurance and humility by hard work, severe fasting, with nightly vigils, constant singing of psalms and with poklon-bowings to the ground. Finally the Monk Anthony decided to settle Paul into a separate cell.      For many years of ascetic exploits the Lord granted the Monk Paul both perspicacity, and the power to cast out demons. When they brought a possessed youth to the Monk Anthony, he guided the sick one to the Monk Paul with the words: "Those great in faith can cast out only small demons, but the humble like Paul the Simple, have power over the princes among demons".

Hebrews 1:1-12

1God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You"? And again: "I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son"? 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "Let all the angels of God worship Him." 7 And of the angels He says: "Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire." 8 But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions." 10 And: "You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail."

17 These things I command you, that you love one another. 18 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.' 26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

Cuvinte zilnice ale lui Dumnezeu | Fragment 294 | „Toți oamenii care nu-L cunosc pe Dumnezeu sunt oameni care I se împotrivesc lui Dumnezeu”

Dumnezeu Atotputernic spune: „Aceia care nu înțeleg scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu sunt aceia care se opun lui Dumnezeu și, chiar mai mult, aceia care sunt conștienți de scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu, dar nu caută să-L mulțumească pe Dumnezeu. Cei care citesc Biblia în bisericile mari, recită Biblia în fiecare zi și, totuși, niciunul nu înțelege scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu. Niciunul nu este capabil să-L cunoască pe Dumnezeu; mai mult, niciunul nu este în concordanță cu inima lui Dumnezeu. Toți sunt oameni netrebnici, ticăloși, fiecare crezându-se la înălțime ca să-L învețe pe Dumnezeu. Deși ei flutură numele lui Dumnezeu, ei I se opun voit. Cu toate că ei se denumesc credincioși ai lui Dumnezeu, ei sunt cei care mănâncă trupul și beau sângele omului. Toți astfel de oameni sunt diavoli care devorează sufletul omului, demoni care îi tulbură intenționat pe cei care încearcă să umble pe calea cea dreaptă, și obstacole în calea celor care Îl caută pe Dumnezeu. Cu toate că ei au „un trup robust” cum vor ști adepții lor că ei sunt antihriști care îi conduc pe oameni contra lui Dumnezeu? Cum vor ști ei că aceștia sunt diavoli vii care caută, pentru un scop anume, suflete ca să le devoreze? Aceia care se cinstesc singuri înaintea lui Dumnezeu sunt cei mai josnici dintre oameni, în timp ce aceia care se smeresc sunt cei mai demni de cinste. Și aceia care cred că știu lucrarea lui Dumnezeu și proclamă lucrarea lui Dumnezeu altora în sunet de fanfară în timp ce ochii lor sunt ațintiți asupra Lui – aceștia sunt cei mai ignoranți oameni. Astfel de oameni sunt aceia fără mărturia lui Dumnezeu și aceia care sunt aroganți și îngâmfați. Aceia care cred că au prea puține cunoștințe despre Dumnezeu în ciuda experienței lor reale și a cunoștințelor practice despre Dumnezeu, sunt cei mai iubiți de El. Astfel de oameni au o mărturie adevărată și pot fi cu adevărat desăvârșiți de Dumnezeu. Aceia care nu înțeleg voia lui Dumnezeu sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu; aceia care înțeleg voia lui Dumnezeu, dar nu practică adevărul sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu; aceia care mănâncă și beau cuvintele lui Dumnezeu, dar merg împotriva substanței cuvintelor lui Dumnezeu, sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu; aceia care au concepții despre Dumnezeul întrupat și se răzvrătesc intenționat, sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu; aceia care Îl judecă pe Dumnezeu, sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu; și oricine nu este capabil să Îl cunoască pe Dumnezeu și să Îi fie martor, este adversarul lui Dumnezeu. Așa că, ascultați îndemnul meu: Dacă aveți cu adevărat credința să umblați pe această cărare, atunci continuați să o urmați. Dacă nu puteți să vă abțineți de la a vă împotrivi lui Dumnezeu, atunci mai bine vă întoarceți până nu e prea târziu. Altfel, se prevestesc lucruri mai degrabă rele decât bune, pentru că natura voastră e prea stricată. Nu aveți nici un pic de loialitate sau ascultare sau o inimă care însetează după dreptate și adevăr. Și nu aveți nici un strop de dragoste pentru Dumnezeu. S-ar putea spune că starea voastră înaintea lui Dumnezeu este în totală dezordine. Nu reușiți să vă păziți ceea ce ar trebui sau să vorbiți ceea ce ar trebui. Nu sunteți capabili să puneți în practică ceea ce ar trebui și nu sunteți capabili să îndepliniți rolul pe care ar trebui. Nu aveți loialitatea, conștiința, ascultarea sau fermitatea care ar trebui. Nu ați îndurat suferința pe care ar trebui să o îndurați și nu aveți credința care ar trebui. Sunteți lipsiți total de orice merit; aveți respectul de sine necesar pentru a continua să trăiți? Vă spun că e mai bine pentru voi să închideți ochii pentru odihna veșnică, scutindu-L astfel pe Dumnezeu de grija pentru voi și să sufere de dragul vostru. Credeți în Dumnezeu, dar nu Îi cunoașteți voia; mâncați și beți cuvintele lui Dumnezeu, dar nu sunteți capabili să țineți poruncile lui Dumnezeu. Credeți în Dumnezeu, dar nu Îl cunoașteți și trăiți ca și cum nu ați avea un scop la care să năzuiți. Nu aveți nicio valoare și nu aveți niciun scop. Trăiți ca oameni, dar nu aveți nicio conștiință, integritate sau cea mai mică credibilitate. Cum puteți fi considerați oameni? Credeți în Dumnezeu, dar Îl înșelați. Mai mult, luați banii lui Dumnezeu și mâncați din jertfele Lui, dar, la sfârșit, nu arătați nicio apreciere pentru sentimentele lui Dumnezeu sau conștiință față de Dumnezeu. Nu puteți îndeplini nici cea mai neînsemnată dintre poruncile lui Dumnezeu. Prin urmare, cum puteți fi considerați oameni? Mâncarea pe care o mâncați și aerul pe care îl respirați vin de la Dumnezeu, vă bucurați de harul Său, dar, la final, nu aveți nici cea mai mică cunoștință despre Dumnezeu. Dimpotrivă, ați devenit nefolositori care I se împotrivesc lui Dumnezeu. Nu sunteți atunci niște dobitoace cu nimic mai bune decât un câine? Care dintre animale este mai rău decât voi?

Acei pastori și bătrâni care stau la amvon învățând oamenii, sunt adversarii lui Dumnezeu și aliații lui Satana; aceia dintre voi care nu stați la amvon învățând oamenii nu ați fi adversarii și mai mari ai lui Dumnezeu? Mai mult, nu sunteți în înțelegere cu Satana? Aceia care nu înțeleg scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu, nu știu cum să fie în acord cu inima lui Dumnezeu. Cu certitudine, nu poate fi adevărat pentru aceia care înțeleg scopul lucrării Lui? Lucrarea lui Dumnezeu nu e greșită niciodată; mai degrabă căutarea omului e defectuoasă. Nu cumva acei degenerați, care se împotrivesc voit lui Dumnezeu, sunt mai cumpliți și răuvoitori decât acei pastori și bătrâni? Mulți sunt cei ce se împotrivesc lui Dumnezeu și, printre acei oameni mulți, există diferite tipuri de împotrivire față de Dumnezeu. La fel cum există tot felul de credincioși, există și tot felul de împotrivitori față de Dumnezeu, fiecare diferit de celălalt. Niciunul din aceia care nu recunosc clar scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu nu poate fi mântuit. Indiferent de modul în care omul poate să se fi împotrivit lui Dumnezeu în trecut, atunci când omul ajunge să înțeleagă scopul lucrării lui Dumnezeu și își dedică eforturile în scopul satisfacerii lui Dumnezeu, păcatele lui de dinainte vor fi șterse complet de către Dumnezeu. Atâta timp cât omul caută și practică adevărul, Dumnezeu nu va ține minte ceea ce a făcut acesta. Mai degrabă, Dumnezeu justifică omul pe baza practicării adevărului de către acesta. Aceasta este dreptatea lui Dumnezeu. Înainte ca omul să-L fi văzut pe Dumnezeu sau să fi experimentat lucrarea Lui, indiferent de cum acționează omul față de Dumnezeu, El nu Își aduce aminte. Cu toate acestea, odată ce omul L-a văzut pe Dumnezeu și a experimentat lucrarea Lui, toate faptele și acțiunile omului sunt scrise în „cronici” de către Dumnezeu, pentru că omul L-a văzut pe Dumnezeu și a trăit în lucrarea Lui.

Când omul a văzut cu adevărat ce are Dumnezeu și ce este El, a văzut supremația Lui și a ajuns să cunoască cu adevărat lucrarea lui Dumnezeu și, mai mult, atunci când vechea fire a omului se schimbă, atunci omul își va fi înlăturat complet firea răzvrătită care se împotrivește lui Dumnezeu. Se poate spune că fiecare om s-a împotrivit odată lui Dumnezeu și fiecare om s-a răzvrătit odată împotriva lui Dumnezeu. Cu toate acestea, dacă intenționezi să Îl asculți pe Dumnezeu întrupat și, de acolo înainte, să satisfaci inima lui Dumnezeu cu loialitatea ta, să practici adevărul care ar trebui, să îți îndeplinești datoria așa cum ar trebui și să păzești regulile care ar trebui, atunci ești unul care e gata să își dea la o parte răzvrătirea pentru a-L mulțumi pe Dumnezeu și unul care poate fi desăvârșit de Dumnezeu. Dacă ar trebui să refuzi să realizezi ce greșeli faci și nu ai o inimă de pocăință; dacă persiști în căile tale de răzvrătire și nu ai deloc o inimă care să lucreze cu Dumnezeu și să Îl mulțumească pe Dumnezeu, atunci ești un nebun îndărătnic care va fi pedepsit cu siguranță și nu va fi niciodată desăvârșit de Dumnezeu. Dacă așa stau lucrurile, tu ești dușmanul lui Dumnezeu, azi și mâine, și vei rămâne dușmanul lui Dumnezeu în ziua ce vine; vei fi veșnic un adversar al lui Dumnezeu și dușmanul lui Dumnezeu. Cum ar putea Dumnezeu să te elibereze? Este în natura omului să se împotrivească lui Dumnezeu, dar omul nu poate căuta intenționat „secretele” împotrivirii față de Dumnezeu pentru că a-și schimba natura este o sarcină de nedepășit. Dacă aceasta este situația, ar fi mai bine să te îndepărtezi până nu e prea târziu, ca mustrarea să nu devină tot mai aspră în viitor și ca natura ta sălbatică să nu iasă la iveală și să devină de nestăpânit, până când trupul tău de carne va fi eliminat de Dumnezeu, la final. Crezi în Dumnezeu pentru a fi binecuvântat; dacă, la final, doar nenorocirea s-ar abate asupra ta, nu s-ar merita osteneala. Vă îndemn mai bine să vă faceți un alt plan; orice alt exercițiu ar fi mai bun decât credința voastră în Dumnezeu. Cu siguranță există și alte cărări pe lângă aceasta? Nu ați continua să trăiți la fel fără să căutați adevărul? De ce să trăiți astfel, împotrivindu-vă lui Dumnezeu?”

👾 Microbiology in Church?

From a purely microbiological perspective, the sweet red wine used in Communion is typically high in alcoholic content.

-- Disinfectants are at least 70% alcohol. Wine is 20% at most.

This means that the chances of bacteria or germs surviving in it are virtually minimal to non-existent.

-- Minimal.

Although each of us communes the Body and Blood of Christ, the invisible microbes that may enter our mouths from the previous communicant are harmless.

-- Invisible without microscope.

-- If visible, then harmful?

-- Harmless if survived the wine?

From a purely experiential perspective, every chalice on Sundays is consumed in its totality by the priest, after several mouths have communed from it. No priest, including the writer of this column, has ever become ill or incapacitated after consuming the Holy Gifts.

-- Spoon is the issue...

And finally, from a purely spiritual perspective, the Holy Gifts are exactly that: they are sacred, in that they have become imbued with the fullness of God’s presence and grace, and they are divine (not human) gifts, “for every good and perfect gift is from above, coming from [You] the Father of lights” (Prayer behind the Amvon in the Divine Liturgy). If we truly believe in God, we know quite well that God would never allow harm to come to us, most especially in the reception of Holy Communion.

Serbia kicks off their selection process with the first semi final of Beovizija tomorrow, but before that, here’s my ranking of all 24 songs:

Samo mi kaži is the definite standout for me here. I always like guitars and a good bassline, and this is just a really solid alternative song. It has a good pace to it, which makes it feel kind of uplifting and the three minutes fly by! I’m not expecting it to win, but I really hope it qualifies from its semi.

The next two songs also stood out for me. Puklo je nebo isn’t exactly groundbreaking, in fact that type of EDM drop and drum ramp up is pretty dated, you don’t hear many songs like that much any more, but it’s still a good club tune, and it makes me kind of nostalgic listening to it? I’m not sure what it is but I just really enjoy this song. Then there’s Niti, which took a while to grow on me, but I think it’s the best produced song in the whole selection. I love the vibe here, and the addition of the female voice adds a bit of interest to the back end of the song. I don’t think it would be good for Eurovision at all, it’s so laid back it would probably get lost, but I really appreciate it.

The song that seems to be getting the most hype however is Hasta la Vista. This isn’t my genre, but as far as ethno bangers I quite like this one! It’s good fun, and definitely an earworm, I could see this bringing the party to Rotterdam if it wins. I was also going to say how impressed I was that it avoided the heavy synthesised brass and then they revamped it... well you can’t have everything, and I know a lot of people really like that sound.

Overall, while there aren’t that many stand out tracks, I think this is a good selection overall. There’s not a single song that I dislike here, though the majority of them are just fine, nothing more. Still, despite me feeling lukewarm to most of the songs, there’s a pretty diverse range of sounds here, some typical ballads and pop songs, but also a range of ethnic sounds, both combined with modern elements and more traditional, and two different flavours of rock (though I could do without the acoustic glam ballad honestly), and I always like diversity! Serbia definitely have some options, and I’m pretty confident that they’ll end up with a decent entry.
