more ooc because clearly i need to listen to a podcast at work ;)
i've been ruminating on aria & her powers & the potential discovery of her powers while cutting out pants....
i was thinking of two potential things that could happen... or both could happen... or neither could happen, i'm not married to anything haha ;)
i had mentioned in the ooc to @forgottenamira that aria might avoid much interaction with her if this whole idea that she dabbles in ~black magic~ and is maybe a witch was a publically known thing because she was worried about being discovered somehow... i dunno if amira is still on her "poison my step children" kick?? but if she tried that again at some point...
what if there was some sort of guardian interference that alerted her to what amira was up to and aria interceded to stop sebastian/arthur/whoever from eating/drinking the thing-- it might not be a whole "DONT DRINK THAAAAAT!" moment-- it could be something as easy as like knocking over a goblet or throwing a... i dunno cake or something off a balcony? but if amira saw any of it she might have an inkling of how aria knew??? or at least a suspicion? (it might lead to a whole thing if amira did manage to get aria to confirm or confess to it or whatever because then she'd have some sort of blackmail over her to get her to join #TeamCalainon)
the OTHER thing i was thinking came out of @forgottenarthur shocking the world by being so introspective & worried about getting off'd by amira & her dark magic... we already kinda discussed it would be a ~thing~ when/if he ever found out about aria's abilities... and knowing the guardians have the ability to temporarily bestow powers... could there be a situation where those two might be together, arthur ends up injured somehow (nothing too insane-- i had a couple idea if we wanted to go this way?) and aria in a panic manages to "heal" him. i think i said i one point she'd never had that ability bestowed on her so she'd freak out too honestly lol (also i decided the guardians were privy to what happened at Kil-Kennar and we're like 'you get ONE get out of jail free, varmont-- that's it!' XD ) anywho... he's so obsessed with death by magic, it would maybe be interesting to see what happens when the opposite happens? maybe dad was wrong???
or roderick goes nuclear and just burns everyone because he seems like he's slowly headed that route? ;)
so much rambling this week :) but like i said not married to anything... just the nonsense that comes from cutting pants all day haha!

50. Writer's preference - "And what if it is not you?"
The barb stung and Arthur turned away as quickly as if she had struck him.
These walks had become something of a tradition between the Prince and former Princess over the rolling weeks. With the out of doors near unpassable, Arthur's mornings had shifted to a shorter indoor practice before dawn, followed by a brief repast and then a stroll through the Orangery with the Lady Aria. Though they still argued as often as they didn't, there was something free and flowing in these conversations -- a strange sense that no subject was off limits...And that every single one was somehow taboo. It was perhaps true that they had each been raised as royalty, but it seemed their worlds could not have been more different.
Today, the subject had fallen to that all-encompassing theme of his life, the most pressing topic in the empire, and the one least likely ever to be openly addressed: Roderick's line of succession. It was an ache in his gut, this, a hill he had run up all his childhood only to find a sheer rockface confronting him. Now, scrambling for footholds in the brutal cliffside, it was a race to the top against those he loved most -- a climb now far too high to risk the drop. It was success or the death of all meaning. But what was he to do? Throw his siblings from the sides? They too held on by meager fingertips and he could not bear to think of them dashed against the teeth of the unforgiving stone so far below.
Arthur's jaw clenched. He kept her pace, but he no longer looked at her as she spoke; heard her only as if from a great distance. What was there to say? Yet, her last words burned, searing like vinegar in his cuts, and he turned sharply towards her, a rush sounding in his head.
"What? You favor someone else?" he demanded, all effort at bluster or calm stripped away. Surprise seemed to register in his face and, pressing his eyes shut, he shook his head, realizing she meant this only as rhetoric and, with a look of defeat, he sighed; shook his head. "How should I know? It would be the end for me."
He didn't look at her, now, gaze straying upwards towards the gently nodding trees, branches heavy and sagging with fruit. He thought of the tart-sweet of them, tawny and opening with a kind of crack. Fibrous chambers of juice attended the tiny seeds at the center and this, then, was life. Even trees limned their children with sweet cushions against the harsh reality of the world around them. When he laughed, it was a bitter sound.
Sighing, Arthur shook his head. "Aria, I--" but he stopped. He'd not said her name so baldly before and he gestured, helpless, voice trapped within his throat.
Her eyes were dark: not mere chocolate, but something else as if the sea had leaked into them and tossed against stormy shores within her mind. Her face was set, but he could not read it. He searched for something written there, something designed for him to read: he wanted it. He knew the message he wished to read. A very simple message. He wanted to read it again and again, see it roiling within the storm of her eyes. But there was nothing. She was no harbor. She was, perhaps, another deathly drop.
Aria lifted her chin. "Go on."
"I don't know what will happen if my father chooses someone else any more than you do. But I do know I will be a threat to whoever is chosen, simply for having been in the running, and..."
And if it were Edmund who were selected, whom Arthur regarded as the most likely alternative, he would not expect to long outlive his father -- or even his father's choice. Enemies of the House of Calainon had a way of disappearing. Arthur was not altogether certain they even lifted a finger: they were witches, after all. Likely, all they needed do was wish for a thing, and their dark magic did the rest. Edmund might not wish him gone, perhaps...but Amira would not hesitate. He could not help but think that would make for a horrible ending, all the demons of hell rising at her command. His would be a silent end, he had no doubt, yet he knew, too, that if it were by Amira's hand, he would die howling.
If Aria had said something else, Arthur had not heard it. At last, she said: "And what if the Emperor doesn't choose? What happens to us all, then?"
Arthur stopped short, and Aria beside him. "Then it'd be war."
He walked out without another word.

ooc | Alaric & Amira
Alaric does NOT trust Amira and literally never has!!!! TBH, I think she left a sour taste in his mouth from the start given her heritage (Alaric isn't positive she's a witch, but it would not surprise him ONE BIT if she was and he fears what she might do, down the line!) PLUS the fact that she was Roderick's second wife and basically the start of Roderick taking multiple wives!! To Alaric (who is secretly a romantic at heart shhh you didn't hear it from me) it also just shocked and surprised him that Roderick would do that to his first wife, who Alaric was so convinced he was in love with?? Which only really makes sense to Alaric if Amira IS a witch and cast some sort of spell on Roderick!!!
He's def civil to her though, although I think it's probs clear to Amira that he's not her biggest fan??? That being said, he shows her all of the respect she deserves as Roderick's wife and won't hear a word said against her in public but he still watches her v closely and ngl probs suspected her once when one of the other varmont boys got mysteriously sick ~side eye emojis~ but he's literally never had any shred of proof to any of this but still!!

The Banners of House Varmont
note: there may be more. the queens would have their own badges, as well, as would the late empress (tho likely that's now what guin is using, i'd think?), and cassandra likely has use of her mom's and/or arthur's with cadency marks, but since she's an imperial princess, and not just a royal princess, roderick would def ok her usage of her own badge, as well, though that's usually reserved for sons, heirs, and titled warriors, it is likely that guin, cassandra, and each of the queens, as well as the late empress, has at least one unit who fights in their honor given that roderick's empire is v much a military operation, so yeah! basically there may be as many as four other varmont insignias out there, but these are the big five! also pls note that i am convinced roderick has given each of his children an obscene number of titltes to bandy abt (tho not so many as he has!) in order to showcase their importance as his children, but we'll say these are perhaps shortened, more casual titles for astaira ;D

Amira, Witch-Queen of Kolchis
headcanon time!! ok so this has the chance to get loooong so imma spare us aLL and bulletpoint this one, but everyone and esp @forgottenedmund as both admin and the other person currently playing a calainon, lmk what you think bc this might just be ~too insane and idk what you have planned etc alskdjflkjsdfjkdf
KOLCHIS & INTRO
house calainon does not exist or, it perhaps once did, but if it ever truly did, the ages have turned its true history to legend and myth
nonetheless, amira and her brothers make claim to that descent through one tenuous proof: witchcraft
while, given her husband's acute hatred of all seers, this might seem a great shock, this is also the truth, and it is (part of) why amira so tenaciously clings to the memory of her grandmother's gift
so real talk, im using kolchis as the place-holder name for the place amira's from (yes i ~did lift that from greek myth and just partially changed the spelling and no i will ~not apologize ;D), but im picturing an ancient athens meets mythological colchis meets constantinople/the byzantine empire w/ just a dash of ptolemaic alexandria sdlkafjskljdfjkdsf gotta grab all my greek-rooted mega cultures ig laksdjfkjlsdf (and yeah im sure the soldiers there def dip into sparta shhhh) so yeahhhh when you picture amira growing up, its that
CALAINON
in ages past, it is written, there once lived a young and ambitious warlord, called calainon, who is said to have conquered the known world (think alexander the great meets achilles meets hercules meets oedipus meets pelops meets atreus etc etc)
many legends speak of this ambitious fellow, holding often that he was the son of a god and a mortal woman, that he was possessed of superhuman strength and skill and daring, and that no mere mortal could stand before him
while there is no certainty, in truth, that this person ever did exist, it is said that he was the founder of the great city of kolchis, which he made the center of his great empire and that he built the still unfinished, storm-struck tower which was, for many eons, the highest building in all the world and called the stair of calainon (as according to legend he had built it as an attempt to reach the heavens and tear the gods from their holy temples in the skies)
there are two versions of the tales of calainon -- one in which he is cast as a tragic hero, and another in which he apears as a twisted villain
known to history both as calainon the deathless (for it is said that he groans still, buried deep in the bowels of the earth, half unable to die as his father was a god and half unable to live as his mother was a mortal) or, more popularly, cursed calainon the balsphemer
it will probs not surprise you to learn that calainon has always been a great hero of roderick's and thus that, tying his own burgeoning legend to the great calainon's, was a very appealing prospect to roderick
many hero-kings, horrific monsters, celebrated seers, cruel despots, and tragic martyrs of myth and legend are said to have descended from the house of calainon, and it is said that the line of calainon will endure until the end of all time for, cursed though they may be, half-gods they once were also
yet, if any of them ever did exist, it is ages past since any of them were known, save one source: local legend of kolchis speaks of the high priestesses of kolchis...
CALAINON THE VILLAIN
often held up as an example of hubris, calainon dared so much that the gods, themselves, stepped in
a great war took place and, it is oft said in kolchis that calainon committed the heresy of not merely daring to lock away the gods -- a heroic act -- but of attempting to steal their power
all of this he attempted w the erstwhile help of the guardian of kolchis known as the kolchian dragon
some myths hold that the great poisonous drake aided him only in sealing away the gods, and he forced the guardian's hand in attempting to steal the power of the gods
but others hold the guardian wished to aid him in both quests
tales disagree as well on how much calainon achieved: did he manage to seize for himself the power of the gods, or did he fail?
all sources agree on one thing however: there was a titanic battle fought amongst the clouds. the earth shook, lightning broke the fortress below, tidal waves sweeping the broken battlements away, and whole islands were drowned in the uproarious fury of the gods
but ultimately, though sealed away, the gods prevailed and cast down the heretic calainon in his hubris, imprisoning him forever beneath the earth
in his defeat, they cursed him, blinded him, and buried him alive, hurled from the heavens into the abyss of the earth (think: fall of lucifer sort of imagery)
in some variants, the gods also cursed his bloodline forever after, but this is another point upon which there are several variants
CALAINON THE HERO & THE HIGH PRIESTESS OF KOLCHIS
one of the many myths of calainon relates to an unending fire and a dragon, and it is in this version of the story (which happens to be roderick's favorite), that calainon appears not as a villain, but as a hero
in this legend, calainon's war with the gods is a fight for freedom, suppressing the deities with the help of kolchis' legendary guardian, known most often as the kolchian dragon
in the tragedy of the great calainon, he fights the gods only to be cast down in their vengeance, but not before sealing them away forever
in this version it is said that his warrior's spirit shall someday be reborn in a new form to lead the world once again (i invite you to guess how roderick might think he could potentially tie into this myth ;DDD)
according to a local legend in the great city of kolchis, before launching his campaign against the gods, calainon as god-king of kolchis appointed his eldest daughter, arsinoe, as high-priestess
she was a great seeress, famed for her wisdom and power, whose responsibility it was to tend the sacred eternal flame at the shrine of the kolchian dragon
hers was a fiery offering to keep the dragon-guardian strong against the fearsome gods, where her female descendants (for in kolchis it is held that a true seer must be a woman) shall forever after continue her great work, tending the eternal flame to assure that it may never go out or the kolchian dragon, the great guardian, will fade to nothing and die and, it is said, upon that day the gods will be unleashed and bring apocalypse upon the mortals who dared give them chains
this flame was a great bonfire at the center of the shrine, so vast that in ancient days, it was said that it could be seen in every part of the old city, a beacon that never went out
according to this legend, it is the divine blood of calainon which gives a seer her powers and, thus, it is believed -- according to this obscure kolchian legend -- that every single kolchian witch may trace her descent back to mighty calainon
A THOUSAND THOUSAND YEARS PASS...
in roderick's day, the most recent high priestess (sometimes called the 'fire-keeper' or 'witch-queen' of kolchis) was none other than the seeress who was amira's grandmother, with amira seemingly destined to be the next high priestess after her
while once the high priestesses of kolchis were revered, regarded almost like oracle of delphi meets melisandre of asshai-type figures, and each was regarded as the chief and best mystical advisor to the so-called god-kings of kolchis (so called bc it was calainon half-god who had established kingship in kolchis)
these priestesses were known as a powerhouses in their own right, the last known vestiages of calainon himself, ruling the hearts of the people of kolchis, and running a powerful temple overflowing with priestesses and acolytes, almost a small religious city within the greater city, itself, leading to them being known to outsiders as the 'witch-queen of kolchis'
yet by the time of amira's birth, the position had centuries since lost any luster, becoming a ruin of its former self
as the old religion faded into only memory anywhere but astaira, the high priestesses came to be despised, an embarrassing reminder of an age of backwater supersticion compared to the cosmopolitan center kolchis had became and wished to be
without the temple economy still running strong, kolchis' stratification intensified, till it was said that in kolchis, the rich fed not on fruits but on the poor
still worse for the temple, itself, nearly a thousand years ago, a war of religion broke out and the temple was sacked, much of it pulled down and the rest -- though marble -- burned (fun fact: marble ~will burn if the fire is hot enough) till all that was left of the erstwhile 'jewel of kolchis' was a crumbling, burned out shell of its former self. still, the high priestesses endured in the slums, and still the eternal flame burned on
the old city, where the ruined temple was located, was now located in the slums and grime of kolchis amongst its most dangerous dark corners
there, only the lost or the most daring would venture: the ruinous temple of the dragon and its keepers were seen as a supersticious and untrustworthy lot who lurked in the shadows, preying upon unsuspecting tourists
pick-pockets, liars, and harlots who played at mysticism and fortune telling to make off with valuables and steal souls, so the supersticion ran, for their dark, twisted magic
THE LIFE & TIMES OF AMIRA CALAINON
it is with this reputation and in this situation that amira and godfrey grew up, doing their utmost to protect little tristan from the sad truth of the world around them
their father had disappeared when tristan was a babe at the breast, likely murdered in the dangerous streets where they lived, while fleeing with what few valuables the family had left
their mother, the high priestess's only child, died of the pox while her children were still quiet small
thus, though blind and decrepit, it fell to their grandmother to raise her grandchildren
not thinking much of men in general, and regarding the sight as the realm of women anyway, as the kolchian culture long had held, the grandmother relied largely upon amira, training her in what arts she could with the expectation that, someday, amira's magic would show itself
a true believer, her grandmother was sure that, as the last female calainon, amira must be a witch or else the line of high priestesses would die with the grandmother, herself, unless amira were to produce a seer for a daughter
not wishing to surrender her only utility to an unborn daughter who may never even arrive, amira did her best to play along as a witch
a thing which exulted her in her grandmother's eyes who, though she loved her grandchildren fiercely, regarded only other seers as her equals
amira learned to read bones and fires and stars for potential futures (or at least to guess at them)
she learned to read people and 'see' in their futures what they wanted
she learned trickery and slight of hand and, perhaps most of all, she learned about poisons
such things were sacred to the kolchian dragon, known for poisonous fangs and breath and fire hot enough to melt the bones even of beings divine and cold as winter
meanwhile, living in extreme poverty, godfrey and amira learned to lie, to steal, to spy, and to cheat simply in order to subsist
RODERICK
by the time roderick invaded, things were desperate indeed
the star of the cosmopolitan center of kolchis, even, was well into its decline
kolchis had become so corrupt and top heavy that the rich knew little at all of what their ppl suffered -- and cared even less -- living in sublime luxury while everything they sat upon rotted beneath them
still, the god-king was eager to keep what little was left of his so-called empire, now reduced only to a single city
it was soon quite clear that kolchis was roderick's target
the god-king sent many troops to die in vain upon the teeth of roderick's armies, but nothing he did would hold the young would-be conqueror back
at last, with roderick upon him, the god-king ordered the impregnable gates of kolchis closed and laid in wait for a siege
the people in the streets began to starve -- and soon enough amira's own grandmother succumbed
but watching their grandmother slowly die, amira and godfrey had already long since sprung into action, lying and deceiving their way into the palace as servants
there they watched and listened and plotted, aligning themselves with a growing restless movement amongst the poor who meant to tear their god-king down w them
so it was that the common ppl stormed the god-king's castle, killing his guards and his ministers and hanging their bodies from the high walls and trees of of kolchis (yes this is a golden fleece reference)
ultimately, guided by amira and godfrey who knew the freedom fighters of kolchis could not possibly overpower roderick, the god-king's head was delivered to roderick as a gift, and the gates opened to him, inviting him inside as their celebrated and longed-for emperor, with amira as the chief intermediary sent to treat with him given her status as high priestess of kolchis
seeing an opportunity, amira immediately set about seducing the emperor, cleopatra and anne boleyn-style
while also taking full advantage of the local legend she'd heard from her grandmother, and introducing herself as amira calainon, supposedly acknowledged descendant of calainon, the first god-king of kolchis
she was willing to bet, afterall, that roderick probably admired and wished to associated with himself. she wasn't wrong.
so she brought him a head and a crown of laurel leaves and slowly made herself a queen
amira crowned roderick king of kolchis (roderick abolishing all use of the term 'god-king'), herself, in her role as high priestess of kolchis, in the sight of all the kolchians, at the ancient temple of the dragon which roderick had had esp restored for the event
before her marriage, she appointed an acting high priestess to keep the eternal flame burning
which roderick permits as a cultural tradition relating to the cultural hero, calainon, his own relative by marriage
a connection sealed with the birth of their son, edmund
VENGEANCE -- OR FEAR
to be clear, amira is not in love with roderick (they have some weird twisted thing that i could write its own novella on probs but that's for another time), he is the means to an end. for one thing, with one move she had gone from desperately clinging to survival in the slums to one of the richest and most powerful women in the known world, but this was not her only goal in wedding roderick.
amira wants money, she wants power, and she wants revenge. she wants vengeance on roderick, as she blames him (as well as the god-king of kolchis, but she's already wreaked her vengeance upon ~him) for the death of her grandmother, the only person besides godfrey who ever really looked out for amira, and certainly the only one who ever saw smth superior to all others in her.
she also wants revenge against all those -- and even the symbols of those -- who held her head underwater so long so that they, themsleves, could breathe
amira enjoys, endorses, and encourages all of roderick's worst traits bc his zest for conquest is a weapon she wields against the rest of the world. now ~she's the the one holding ~their heads underwater. bitch.
but most of all she wants revenge upon the world for allowing any of it to happen
she means to wait a long time to avenge herself on roderick, himself. when she is ready, he will die, as will all of his children save her own, and edmund will reign at last, and they will finally, finally be untouchable.
in the end, however, even amira's quest for vengeance is rooted in the deep horror she cannot face, the fear that she, too, will be conquered, defeated, helpless, and left to starve to death w the only ppl she truly loves in the fetid streets, just like the only woman who ever loved her.
however, she seeks always to project strength (even to herself!), as it is an armor, her last line of defense, to prevent this from happening, so she will stop at nothing, doing literally whatever it takes, to see her goals met bc then and only then will she be truly safe, or at least as safe as anyone in this world can ever be, with edmund as emperor
as a result, she is always quick to remind herself that it is vengeance and not safety she truly seeks -- but is that really true?

ooc || roderick + marian
Just gonna go ahead and give this its own ooc post!!! XD
it seems to be a theme with the varmonts but i imagine Marian didn't have the most loving or supportive father growing up-- she knew from early on that it was essential she marry well for the good of the family and failure on that account was NOT an option! regardless, she had real feelings for roderick! (though i do think there was a *bit* of cassandra in her at a young age so she had a romanticized notion about the whole thing-- enough that she looked over the whole "i'm the third wife!" thing. )
i want to know your thoughts of course but here is what i'm kinda thinking... things got pretty sour pretty quickly on in the marriage when she wasn't getting pregnant. (which might have been amira's fault... or had she not gotten into poison quite yet? haha!) that probably brought out a side of roderick she hadn't necessarily seen before which definitely shattered any remaining romanticized version of this life she now lives! so then we all know all the stuff that happened with bart... which i think marian simply refused to acknowledge? i think she has willed herself into believing that Arthur is Roderick's son-- there really isn't another option for her. same kinda goes for who the heir will be-- it will be arthur and that's that. honestly, emotionally, i don't think she can really consider any other option!
i do love the idea that the one thing they're on the same page on is NO ONE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEIR CHILDREN! XD one of her biggest fears i think is that one day roderick is going to insist a marriage for cassandra for ~political reasons~ and she'll be off somewhere (possibly married to someone not great!) and it will just break her entirely!! she also worries about arthur and sebastian's future marriages, too, but not so much... they're men! they'll be fine!

OOC | Eilionora & Marian
forgottenarias said:  @giadesstrin I was legit contemplating if Marian would like Aria or not but i’m guessing now she does? or at least is cordial enough that she can be like “hey another one of my kids is on death’s door HELP PLEASEEEE” giadesstrin said:  @forgottenarias dgjjfdgh omgggggg I didn’t really think abt that relationship I love that!!!! I’m screaming now too bc like…She’s honestly in such a weird position re: her bc like on one hand her hubby wants to marry her sister???? On another her son is interested in her??? And on yet ANOTHER she’s a professed enemy of her house who helped save her son like??!?!! Poor Marian honestly what a position to be in sgjkfsfhj how is anyone supposed to deal w ALL of that good AND bad shkkgdfh forgottenarias said:  @giadesstrin I need to do an OOC for Marian & Eilia but I def think Marian doesn’t want Roderick to marry her 1) because there doesn’t need to be any other contenders in this heir to the throne race and 2) as much as she still loves him, being married to Roderick is definitely not all it is cracked up to be! Part of marian wants to protect her from him! forgottenarias said:  @giadesstrin and with Aria I think that Marian def wouldn’t like her if there was event the slightest implication of even a potential of some sort of romantic relationship w/ Arthur bc NO ONE is ever going to be good enough for her first born! Sorry ladies! You clearly just want him for his money/power! But Aria being proactive in this above instance and not really wanting anything in return is not a thing she’s used to so she’s not sure WHAT to think rn! Plus she fixed her precious child!!!
sdfasdf ok so i thought id go ahead and make an ooc for them, and i included the bit abt aria bc i do think that that has the potential to impact eilia/aria things as well!
ok so!! i honestly think that eilia at first thought that it was just really weird that roderick had all these wives and she was like WHY WOULD THEY PUT UP W THAT but uhhhh recently she's been like 'oh. ig maybe they didn't get much of a choice' bc that's certainly been ~her experience re: dating roderick hahaha and eilia def has more agency than they did, being -- though deposed -- a queen so now honestly i think she just feels sooooo horrible for them and is lowkey looking at them -- these two V DIFFERENT yet both v clearly unhappy women -- like 'there but by the grace of the guardians go i' basically laskdjfkdlsf and honestly i think atp she's really come around in the way she looks at them both!! esp marian (bc i def think amira gives off resting bitch face but as a full blown personality disorder even if ur tryna approach her whole deal optimistically alskdjflksjdfajdf)!!!!!
i ~do think if she knows that a lot of the varmont kids have a good relationship w the malconaires that would def be a boost in their favor bc eilia trusts them etc but i ~do think eilia is still feeling far from trusting of the varmonts, themselves, even if she does know that!! just...'at least they're not as horrible as i thought' rather than 'they're good ppl after all' basically hahaha and i do think that, given that its looking more or more like she might be wife #4, eilia has been thinking abt what roderick might look like as a dad since she's now afraid he might be the father of ~her children, and she's like YIKES
so, all in all, she's feeling much more sympathetic towards both marian and her family (minus roderick, STILL decidedly NOT a fan of his)!! and esp w marian on the cusp of this w her sister, i can see where they could maybe start having more ~honest conversations, perhaps? bc i do feel that eilia has played this entire thing by being observant and polite -- stalwart where she needs (ie when it comes to her country and astairans and keeping them safe etc) to be but other than that mostly closed off emotionally and courteous, but basically just tryna give them NOTHING bc she figures they'll use anything at all against her they can
but yeah its been a looooong journey getting there i feel hahahaha and even now she'd def be tentative and clam up at the slightest sign of trouble ngl

Aria/Godfrey - “ have you come to laugh at me in my miserable state? ”
"Laugh?" Godfrey's eyes were flint gleaming in the darkness, as he stepped into the light.
Declaring the Staffords bastards had been a misstep for Roderick: that much was evident. One had only to look at the rites of old Astaira, at even the queen's own styles before the conquest, to know this was not the true source of her power. Eilionora's elaborated titles were not like Roderick's: they were simple, and they were clear. Where Roderick's boasted divine appointment as the basis of his rule, hers noted somethng entirely different:
Her Grace, Eilionora of Astaira, the Seventh of her Name, by the Grace of the Guardians and of the People, Queen of All Astaira
Her style did not sing of glories bestowed by gods, by House, or by conquest: only the grace bestowed by spirits and by the people, themselves. Her style did not reflect whether she had entitlement to the use of the name Stafford, or even any connection to that House and, though she'd been a queen who had enriched the people and brightened their futures, she did not append any other tribute to her titles save that she was chosen by them, from amongst them, as an Astairan, herself. She had ruled the largest land in all the world: and still she said nothing of it. The important things, clearly, had already been stated.
Perhaps this truly was the land Amira had been seeking all her life: a land where the commons could rule. Yet, she had only ever come as a conqueror, a queen herself, and the bitter irony of it twisted into a strange smile upon the lips of her brother.
Roderick badly misjudged what mattered to the Astairans but, for Godfrey, that was all to the good. For Godfrey, that was an opportunity.
Aria was seated on a small divan overlooking a window, but he could see in her eyes that she had lately been weeping. He was little surprised, given the events of last night's ball. Godfrey did not move to share her long seat but, instead, he took a small wooden one and pulled it close to her position, seating himself there.
"I know what it is to feel powerless, madam," he said, skirting the usage of titles, princess or lady: the subject was too fraught, yet the walls were always listening. Better simply to find another mode of adress. "I could never laugh at such a thing."
He paused, sighed. "There is something I would have you know of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor: to him, any cost is worthy in the name of doing what he believes he must. In that much, I think, you and he may agree if, perhaps, less so in...other matters."
He paused, grey eyes darting towards the winter-strewn scene outside, ice spreading thin-veined like spiderwebs across the glass pane. "You may find His Majesty far easier to...understand looking at it from such an angle. And you may find that both he and his children become easier to navigate when better understood. Like many of us, when he is being...understood, he is also more inclined to...generosity.
"Perhaps, then, a study of his beliefs may prove...beneficial. My Eminence, Aleksander Royce, would doubtless prove overjoyed to teach you, and His Majesty, himself, would take it as a step in the right direction, I have little doubt...Though discretion might serve you, as well, to keep the people content. It is hard to say what loyal Astairans might make of such studies, and I'm sure we've none of us any wish to see chaos in the streets."
Or whether she might start to lose their loyalties if it were thought that she strayed too far into the Varmont camp and that loss would not suit Godfrey over much.
He could not yet ask her to trust him, when he'd not given her a reason to do so. After this, if she saw what he intended by it: a roadmap to better guiding and shaping and directing the Varmonts, themselves, she might be open to trusting him more, and if she was open to trusting him, perhaps some alliance between her cause and his could then be arranged. But first this step. Everything in its time.
Godfrey stood then, pulling the chair back to its original position. "No matter what happens to us, madam," he said, as he came to stand once more by the door. "I find we are only powerless so long as we allow ourselves to be."

OOC | Ronan & Cassandra
fun fact! ur not!bf's big brother wants to kill you </3 #datingproblems
lkasdjfkldjsf hi, so, cassandra has never hurt a fly but ronan is convinced she is evil and needs to go! i do think he's a touch less vitriolic abt the varmont women (including the queens even tho amira might literally be the worst of alllll the varmonts slfkjaksldjfkjsf but here we are) bc i think he is aware that women in the varmont empire have less agency so he doesn't blame them for anything, and he frankly feels terrible for them and believes they're just pawns, but he does believe that no matter what they have to die bc as long as roderick's kids survive, so does a vestige of his evil empire and that must be smashed no matter what so yeahhhh
i do think he'd try to make her death as quick and painless as possible, but he does def want her dead sooooo that's fun lkajsdfkjdsf

ooc | Cassandra & Eilionora
I'm crying b/c I feel like Cassandra is like one of the few people who is actually on board with Eilionora/Roderick #facepalm
I feel like she likes the Staffords and also thinks that the Varmont fam could use some more young girls in the mix and Eilionora could be the cool/fun stepmom that Amira never was??? And Cassandra would get an aunt outta Aria, so like what's not to love?
Also cue Cassandra trying to talk up her dad but also run out of good things to say about him b/c despite what she thinks, she doesn't have a lot of positive memories that involve her dad #whoops
In addition, I'm laughing b/c literally anyone else could see that Roderick is the villain of this story and Eilionora is the woman he's trying to force to marry her but since it's her dad -- meanwhile, Cassandra just thinks Eilionora is the gal he rescued who is, as of yet, blind to how he saved her and her kingdom from ruin and will eventually come around to how much she loves him!

arthur/aria: "why did you help me?"
The Orangery was mysteriously locked that day, which meant that Aria and Arthur found themselves walking at a leisurely pace back and forth the length of the Great Hall.
"What do you mean?" Aria feigned ignorance, though she had been wondering if the topic would come up that day.
The Queen Marian had been distraught two nights previous when Aria had happened upon her later in the evening that she normally would have been out in the castle halls. She'd been engrossed in a book in the library and had lost track of time.
Arthur was unwell, it seemed, and Marian was pacing outside his rooms, going on about a strange childhood illness that had resurfaced to a doctor that seemed unwilling to listen. Aria had heard voice, clear as day, in her head as she watched the event unfold.
"Poison."
Aria hadn't known if the voice was real or if she was imagining things but she had ordered for the maids to bring a tonic up for the prince.
Arthur was wearing blue that day, a strange departure from his normal attire. It made his eyes even brighter, though she could see a lingering fatigue in them as well. Regardless, he was not deterred from his questioning.
"You brought me a tonic. It tasted terrible."
"It should. That means I made it properly."
"You stayed with me. And my mother. Why?" Arthur pressed. Aria found herself growing more frustrated with each question. She had stayed until the early hours of the morning, but at the Queen's insistence. "What do you want me to say, Imperial Highness?" Aria demanded. "Is there an answer you want to hear? You were unwell, your mother was distraught, so I stayed to offer what help I could. What more do you want to hear?"
Arthur said nothing, his eyes instead focused on the second level of the hall. Aria followed his gaze to see the other Queen, Amira, walking briskly down the length before disappearing from view. She didn't seem to have even noticed the pair
"Poison! Poison! Poison!"
"Are you unwell?" Arthur was looking at her now, Aria realized.
"I... I think I need to lie down," Aria brought her hand to her forehead. "I'm sorry to cut this--" she stopped. What was this, these walks the pair took now almost daily?
"Perhaps the Orangery will be open tomorrow," she concluded as her parting words before hurrying off at a brisk pace.
Eilia was not in their rooms when she returned which, for perhaps the only time in these past two years, was what Aria had hoped. The young woman approached the hearth of their sitting room fireplace, kneeling down in front of it.
"I don't know if you can hear me... if you're even here... if you're the voice in my head..." Aria whispered into the fire. "Please hold on. We haven't given up." She paused.
"And if that was a warning... thank you."

OOC | Arthur & His Line of Succession
idk what to entitle this but!!! my brain at 5am was like 'here have this' so now you get to hear abt it too lksdjfkljsdfjl
ok so!! arthur's faction, even objectively speaking (like in an au where every single varmont really and truly is the disgusting vile monster that ronan thinks they all are, this is STILL an advantage for arthur), has a v big advantage over the others, and that is @forgottensebastian!! while sebastian just being the amazing person he is, is a total win for arthur, like i said, even if he were actually leck quasar born again (SCREAM), his v existence would still be a huge advantage to the Arthurian faction bc he's a designated and direct heir and historically!!!!! that is a huuuuge asset in getting ppl to fight/vote for you!! so i wanted to sort of explore this a bit!
so, when ur abt to embark on a civil war for 'who should rule us next' ur hoping ur not gonna have to turn around and do it all again once ur chosen leader kicks the bucket, and arthur having a clear, designated heir from the get-go is a a part of that! bc w edmund or guin, say they get crowned etc, well great! but they're just one person right so what happens if/when they die before having kids! ur back to square one -- if guin's crowned, well, whose her heir? edmund? arthur? ur back at it again!
this is (one of) the reasons @forgottengodfrey is so keen to get edmund hitched (also gaining the stafford/astairan alliance etc but yeah), so edmund can start making heirs of his own, pronto!
ironically, its also one of the reasons @forgottenroderick is so reluctant to let his kids marry bc then ppl might start wanting one of his kids to rule more than they want ~him too!!!! its also the reason he was so desperate to have kids in the first place and took three wives to do it </3
but annnnyway, as a result, i do think arthur's sort of...thought abt this a lil bit frankly (he's so much more introspective than i ever thought it throws me every time i swearrrr) now, obv, idk how this will all go down but, if roderick were to die, and arthur to begin his gambit to seize the throne, i think he'd make his line of succession basically the sons of roderick in order of age; the sons of roderick's father in order of age (aka alaric), the sons of roderick's grandfather in order of age (aka bartholomew) and then their male line descendants in order of age (aka eoin). if all these men were to die, then it would follow the same structure but w women so:
arthur
sebastian
edmund
alaric
bartholomew
eoin
guinevere
cassandra
ciara
now, in his ideal world alaric and the other male varmonts would inherit before edmund like so:
arthur
sebastian
alaric
bartholomew
eoin
edmund
guinevere
cassandra
ciara
but he def recognizes that obv edmund has a way better claim to the imperial throne (not necessarily the kingly one of the og country tho depending on how ~those inheritance laws are written, but in that roderick apparently reopened old laws from ther abt multiple wives, im assuming its still true that edmund would have a better claim to ~that throne as well?) than alaric, bartholomew, or eoin so yeah! the top one is what he's currently thinking! HOWEVER i do think the more he talks to @forgottenarias the more he rethinks his position and so i think he may potentially end up considering heirs in order not just male heirs so:
arthur
sebastian
cassandra/edmund
edmund/cassandra
guinevere
alaric
bartholomew
eoin
ciara
now this would actually be a mistake for his faction, really, bc it'd mess up his ability to claim that ~he should be king since guinevere is, in fact, older, so i do think he'd at best do some handwave abt how roderick's male heirs come first bc that was the intention of the founder or whatever, and THEN roderick's female heirs and then everybody else hahaha but i do think he'd still want to be like CASSANDRA OVER EDMUND but yeahhhh idk if he could reasonably pull that off so i do think it'd result in a lot of confusion abt who has precedence between those two were he ever to actually realize his claim (unlikely!!) but yeah!! sldkjfalksdlfjdslkfj
anyway, he might potentially handwave abt his mother's line being the true imperial one (and thus cassandra still having precedence over edmund despite her sex) as marian became ~his mother and thus cassandra having precedence over edmund or smth but idk -- if they're still at war w edmund when this comes down the line he'd def be like 'yeah that's how that's happening' but if somehow arthur's in power and edmund's cool w it or whatever then he'd probs feel edmund would be a better fit for the crown than cassandra tbqh and have him as the third
anyway!! ngl none of this will probably EVER matter bc even if we do kill off roderick and start our war w/o that one big revelation etc, we uhhhh know that lil smth abt arthur that he don't know so yeah!! (and lbr even if he did manage to seize power as soon as he and edmund made peace, amira would just poison him soooo) but anyway here we are i thought of it so i thought id share it hahaha

GUINEVERE VARMONT, PRINCESS OF THE VARMONT EMPIRE / LÉA SEYDOUX
♛ Age: (26) ♛ Relationships: Roderick Varmont (father), Amira Varmont, Marian Varmont (half-mothers), Arthur Varmont, Sebastian Varmont, Edmund Varmont (half-brothers), Cassandra Varmont (half-sister), Alaric Varmont (uncle), Bartholomew Varmont (great uncle), Ciara Varmont, Eoin Varmont (cousins), Tristan Calanion (friend/interest), Sonya Malconaire (new friend)
only a few months older than her younger half-brother, arthur
had she been born any later, perhaps the matter of succession would not be so muddled, but as it is, guin is one of three children that might follow in her father's footsteps
as the eldest of all of his children, and the only child of the wife he loved best, guin is an obvious choice however the fact that she is a woman does not work in her favor and most believe it will be her younger brother, arthur, who will take the throne
others believe that perhaps it will be her half-brother edmund, who although is not the first born son, is the first male heir to come from either roderick's first or second wives
guin has no real desire to be queen tbh but she also believes she is the best suited for the job and often sees her brothers behave like children in their attempts to outshine the other
honestly does not have a good relationship with either of her step-mothers -- sees them as the ones who are pulling the strings when it comes to the unrest in their family
has a lOT of complicated feelings re: her entire family in general
has limited but fond memories of her mom, who she remembers as kind and gentle, but terrible sad and she knew that the source of this was the fact that guin's father decided to take on other wives in addition to her
eventually her mother died and guin is convinced it was of a broken heart
guin has always been her father's favorite child -- she can LITERALLy do no wrong in his eyes and he constantly showers her with gifts but guin believes a lot of this derives from the guilt he feels over her mother's death (she is certain he believes she died of a broken heart, too)
both loves and hates her dad #itscomplicated
super smart!!!!! can be sarcastic af and will not take any of her family's shit tbh -- will call you out when you are being stupid
has had more marriage proposals than she can count but her dad doesn't think any man is good enough for her
guin doesn't really see herself married, but if she becomes queen she shall do it as her duty to the realm
an introvert (but anything but shy!! she will tell you exactly what she's thinking) guin likes to spend time alone -- reading, walking, & generally avoiding people

ALISTAIR GREY, MASTER OF WAR / IAIN GLEN
♛ Age: (39) ♛ Relationships: Roderick Varmont (king), Guinevere Varmont (friend/interest), Bartholomew Varmont (best friend), Arthur Varmont, Edmund Varmont (apprentices)
alistair serves upon the king's council as his master of war
a great strategist and once a great warrior, alistair was an obvious choice for the appointment
he's been
OPEN.
CECILY HAMLEN / ANGEL COULBY
♛ Age: (25) ♛ Relationships: Edward Hamlen (brother), Ciara Varmont (mistress/best friend), Eoin Varmont (secret fiancé), Bartholomew Varmont (employer), Eithne Malconaire (friend)
cecily is one of the most honest and genuine people you are ever likely to meet!!
but she's been keeping a couple of secrets lately, which honestly having been testing her frankly, non-existent lying skills!!
cecily has always known that she was incredibly lucky to secure her position in the varmont household
the varmonts have all always been extremely kind and generous towards her and while she is employed as a servant, the lines between master/servant and friendship are often so blurred, that cecily often feels as though she is part of the family
... which is how she ended up in such a position with eoin varmont
her relationship with him started, as with his sister, as one of friendship and she found herself deeply in love with him before she realized she had begun
she tried, then, to distance herself from him as she knew it could never be and to encourage his affections would be wrong, both because she worked for his family but also because nothing could ever come of it
but she found she could not stay away and when he asked her to be his wife, she agreed
they plan to one day run away together, as soon as they have enough money, but as much as cecily is eager to be eoin's wife, she doesn't want to leave her brother just yet ... nor does she want to leave her friends, especially ciara (given her situation) which brings her to her next secret
cecily knows that ciara was mistaken by the resistance to be her own lady-in-waiting (aka cecily herself) and when it became clear that the resistance was likely to ransom her (at best) and kill her (at worst), ciara did nothing to dissuade them of this notion and was able to escape
OPEN.
LORD EOIN VARMONT / MAX IRONS
♛ Age: (29) ♛ Relationships: Bartholomew Varmont (father), Ciara Varmont (sister), Roderick Varmont, Alaric Varmont, Guinevere Varmont, Arthur Varmont, Sebastian Varmont, Edmund Varmont, Cassandra Varmont (cousins), Marian Varmont, Amira Varmont (cousin's wives), Godfrey Calanion (future brother-in-law), Tristan Calanion (best friend), Cecily Hamlen (secret fiancée), Aria Stafford (potential fiancée)
hopeless romantic!!!!!!
eoin is completely in love with cecily and honestly has been since he first laid eyes on her
(my man is a bIG believer in love at first sight!)
he quickly befriended her and found, soon after, that he wasn't the only one w/ feelings and he has since asked her to marry him
eoin knows that his cousin, the emperor, means to marry him off for political gain and that he would nOT appreciate eoin marrying w/o his consent and certainly not a servant!!!
he also knows that, while he is sure his father would want only his happiness, that his father would also not approve of his attachment as it would go against roderick's desires and it would only end badly for him and cecily when roderick found out
so eoin keeps it a secret from everyone
only his closest friend, tristan calanion, and his sister know of the engagement
he plans to go ahead and marry cecily and face whatever consequences follow but deep down he knows that to live happily with her will most likely result in him having to flee the country under the cover of darkness and find some corner of the earth that is yet untouched by roderick
he knows that this would mean that neither he nor cecily would see their families again and as much as they both hope to marry soon and start a family of their own, it has provided some hesitation on both sides
in the meantime, both are saving as much money as they can and eoin is hoping to delay any other possible engagements (there's been talk about Aria Stafford as a potential)
faithful, courageous, honorable
has a great sense of humor and is here to lighten the mood
however will definitely sit and brood sometimes, especially when he's missing cecily <3
feels things deeply and tbh while he is rather intelligent, his emotions can cloud his judgement and when he's emotional he is super rash and impulsive, but is very objective when he's calm
OPEN.
LADY CIARA VARMONT / JODIE COMER
♛ Age: (26) ♛ Relationships: Bartholomew Varmont (father), Eoin Varmont (brother), Roderick Varmont, Alaric Varmont, Guinevere Varmont, Arthur Varmont, Sebastian Varmont, Edmund Varmont, Cassandra Varmont (cousins), Marian Varmont, Amira Varmont (cousin's wives), Godfrey Calanion (fiancé), Tristan Calanion (future brother-in-law), Cecily Hamlen (lady-in-waiting/best friend), Ronan Frost (target/interest/complication), Cillian Frost, Percy Reaves, Saoirse Frost (fellow resistance members/friends/complications), Eil
ciara's life has gotten wildly out of control

Tea for Three | Amira & Aria & Eithne
"Here," said Amira, forming a smile. "Sit here."
The room was ana small one, intimate in its scale and yet, made of almsot entirely glass, open to the sky. It had been one of Eilionora's favorite rooms in all the palace, but she had scarcely seen it since the Varmont occupation had begun and, now, she might have been stunned to see it so transformed by sudden winter in spring. Ice licked the wide glass panes, its frosty prints seeming to tune the pale stone all to muted marble.
Still, Amira welcoming to young women into the room -- one of whom was amongst its rightful owners -- took little heed of winter's wroth or its frosty caress upon the building in which they weathered it. At the recent ball, Amira had noted the attentions which her stepson, Arthur, had unabashedly paid to each of the two women she'd invitd to tea and she turned her apprising gaze upon them, instead.
Though she smiled, there was something in the gaze that left something wanting -- some strange hunger that never seemed to leave her. Emotion had long since ceased to be natural to her, and its facsimile she wore with some difficulty. The only thing she felt was raw. She no longer recalled how to doll it up with sweetness. Her eyes were dissecting where she meant to appear warm. So she smiled, wolfish, heedless of the effect, and welcomed her unwilling guests.
"I am so glad you were, the both of you, able to come. I know my stepson, dear Prince Arthur, will be most pleased to see you both," she added, arching a brow. "He is so very fond of you each."
