Idea based on a weird dream I had last night —
“The Peasant King” — kings bastard who was eventually legitimized and named his fathers heir but had lived us entire life up until then in squalor. His court accused him of being too lenient towards crime amongst the poor and his old friends and the woman he loved but could not marry told him that being king had turned him into a different man. Once eager to please, he now only looked after his own interests and sought only power and wealth and damn all his subjects. By the end, greed had twisted him beyond recognition and now he haunts the halls of the palace — neither living nor fully dead.

The old Religion
— legend has it that long ago guardians were sent to earth to protect the humans from both gods and monsters who would harm them
— the guardians cannot be seen by human eyes but they reside upon the hearth of the home and protect their family from danger
— they require gifts/tokens of some kind to be presented to them to keep them strong
— if they are ignored for long enough, the guardians will wither (potentially they die??) but either way they will loose their strength and the barrier between this world and the next will fall
— KATIEs land is the last place on earth where they still practice the old religion and even there it is loosely done
—- leaving gifts among the hearth is kinda just a folkloric tradition atp and most people don’t take it seriously but KATIE and her sisters know better and have done a lot to see the traditions carried on because they know the importance
—- KATIES county is also the largest and most populated country on earth and therefore has been able to almost single-handedly keep the gods away
— There are some people (traditionally but not exclusively women) who can see and speak to the guardians
— ASTRID is one of them and she knows firsthand the dire condition they are in
— The guardians appear creature-like and those unfamiliar with the lore who can see them, often believe they are seeing demons and are driven insane
— because of this, In JUDES country this religion is now believed to be demon worship and is outlawed and he’s making it a crime to participate in any religious holiday where gifts and offerings are set out for these creatures
