Built to Spill, Prism Bitch, & Itchy Kitty Live Show Review: 5/4, Thalia Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Ask Built to Spill fans why they love the band, and you’ll likely get a wide variety of answers, ranging from their dreamy themes to their earnest moods and stories. Ask this Built to Spill fan why he loves to see the band live, and it’s because Doug Martsch is a bona fide guitar hero. Plus, this current incantation of the band--with bopping, limber bassist Melanie Radford and mighty drummer Teresa Esguerra--is arguably the tightest Built to Spill has ever been. Thursday night at Thalia Hall, it was Esguerra’s birthday, and she played double duty, also in openers Prism Bitch. But the celebration was about more than just the calendar year. It was a tribute to Built to Spill’s most recent album When The Wind Forgets Your Name (Sub Pop), their finest in years, and the endurance of their back catalog among followers new and old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Built to Spill always amazes me with how much sound they can get out of three people: with Martsch, Radford, and Esguerra, they delivered shredding intros, extended jams, and even some surf rock choogles. They entered the stage to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”, and then proceeded to--wait for it--play a couple minutes of the song, instrumental, before traditionally opening with their own trademark epic, “Goin’ Against Your Mind”. I’d like to believe that in an alternate universe, Built to Spill is regarded as musically limber as the Canadian prog rockers, just as much as Martsch is regarded as a quintessential Pacific Northwest storyteller. When covering Heartless Bastards’ “The Mountain”, Radford took lead vocals, a dead ringer for Erika Wennerstrom, which answered the question you never knew you need the answer to, “What if Heartless Bastards had Doug Martsch on lead guitar?” Her sneaky lines on “Center of the Universe” and vocal harmonies on unreleased jangle pop ditty “Fire To Dust” made you wish Martsch would break his rotation and just keep her as a full-time member.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Esguerra proved to be more than versatile, her time-keeping centering Built to Spill and her mammoth fills propelling Albuquerque's Prism Bitch. Dressed like pilots and flight attendants, the latter started out with vibrant, synth-heavy pop from their most recent record PERLA. The democratically laid out four-piece saw guitarist/keyboard player Lilah Rose taking lead vocals on most songs but with bassist Lauren Poole in harmony, guitarist Tris Walsh slowly adding burning, creepy, sludgy, and psychedelic riffs to the fold on their punkier, older songs like “You Got I Want”. Best, they blasted through the supremely catchy, weeks-old “Woman” with aplomb, their hooks increasingly demanding of larger crowds and stadiums.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most abrasive was Spokane’s Itchy Kitty, their unique combination of yelped punk and wiry goth-glam priming the audience for a night of genre-hopping rock and roll. The Osees-like squeal affects on guitarist Catman’s licks effectively matched the wails of guitarist/singer Ami Elston and bassist Naomi Eisenbrey on songs like “Coca-Cola Snakes”, “That Was My Dinner” and their irreverent “Psycho Killer” cover. Drummer Michael (Sug) Tschirgi chugged away as the rest, especially Elston, convulsed like feline versions of Ian Curtis. If Built to Spill and Prism Bitch were wound, Itchy Kitty was the ultimate expression of unbridled performance.

🔎YA Under the Radar Part 4🔍
I’m back with another round of recommendations! It’s been a while since the last installation in this rec series but I’ve been gathering up the best of the quiet YA and gathered them into a list for your perusal and entertainment!
A lot of UK and Australia YA again this round but I increased the Goodreads rating threshold to 15k to let in a few backlog books I didn’t get to before they hit the 10k mark I’ve used for previous lists in this series. Still, these are all excellent books that I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a YA novel off the beaten track 😊
As usual, I’ve added pride flag emojis to LGBT+ books and wheelchair emojis to books with good disability rep. Enjoy!

December TBR--
Tumblr media
This photo includes just a few of the books I plan on reading this month. Of course, I’m going to read as many Christmassy books as I can get my hands on but I also have a handful of other things I’m going to try to get read this month.
1. Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson (new release)-- This is the third book in the Skyward series. Skyward follows Spensa. who wants to train to become a pilot for her planet’s defense force. But her father’s history of being a coward bars her way. And the story goes from there. I really don’t want to give the synopsis of a third book in a series.
2. Fool Me Twice at Christmas by Camilla Isley (Kindle and new release)-- This involves one of my favorite romance tropes--fake dating. Two recent exes pretend to still be together for the sake of their families at Christmas, but just-for-show kisses start to stir up forgotten feelings. *insert squealing here*
3. When the Snow Falls by Fern Michaels, Nancy Bush, Rosanna Chiofalo, and Lin Stepp-- I found this collection of Christmas romance stories at a library sale and what better time to read it than December? It seems like a similar theme running through most of the stories is second chance romances and grinch-y main characters who fall back in love with Christmas thanks to the other main character.
4. The Righteous by Renee Ahdieh (new release)-- This is book #3 in Ahdieh’s the Beautiful series about 19th century New Orleans which is a city filled with Vampires, Werewolves, and Fae hiding in plain sight.
5. How to Love Your Neighbor by Sophie Sullivan (NetGalley)-- Grace has it all figured out. She’s going to finish school, get her degree and her dream job, and fix up a little house on the beach. As a real estate developer, Noah knows how to make a deal. But he faces road blocks when the combative and beautiful woman living next door refuses to sell her fixer upper.
6. The Deathly Hallows.
7. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston-- A YA holiday romance following Sophie as her family sets her up on blind dates after her long-term boyfriend breaks up with her. I’ve heard people say this is more about familial relationships than romance but that there is still a romance plot.
8. On Christmas Eve by Ann M. Martin-- This is a short children’s holiday novel that I found at a library sale and decided I had to read. It’s about 8 year old Tess who is convinced that this will be the year she finally meets Santa.
9. Across the Universe by Beth Revis-- I’ve heard of this one so much that I had to check it out. This follows 17 year old Amy who joins her parents on a spaceship to travel to a new planet. They are put in a frozen slumber and set to awaken in 300 years when they arrive. However, Amy wakes up 50 years too soon and realizes that it’s no computer malfunction. Someone tried to kill her. If she doesn’t figure out who soon, her parents may be next.
10. Evershore by Brandon Sanderson (new release)-- The third novella in the Skyward Flight novella series and book #3.1 in the Skyward series. This one seems to follow Jorgen and Alanik when they receive a message from the planet Evershore.
11. Giant Days Vol. 2 by John Allison-- The Giant Days comics follow a group of girls in their first year at University. They’re cute and dorky and silly and I just loved them in the first volume.
12. Lumberjanes Vol. 5: Band Together-- Another Lumberjanes. But I’m actually putting it on my TBR this time. In the Lumberjanes comics, we follow the girls of the Roanoke cabin at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for hard-core lady-types as they face more supernatural creatures.

So,
Loving J.K. Rowling has always felt a little illicit.
When her Harry Potter series was first released in the 1990s, it was relentlessly attacked by religious zealots convinced that her fiction would convert a generation of young readers to the Occult. Tucking into it for the first time as an elementary school student, I felt like I was taking a purposefully defiant stance against her naysayers. As a Christian school student, I had to keep her books hidden away to avoid getting in trouble, but I consumed them hungrily regardless.
Fast forward twenty years and she's successfully pissed off an equally evangelical movement: the woke-scolds intent on doing away with the concept of biological sex and replacing it with the ineffable concept of gender identity. For months now she has been speaking out about this toxic subculture and the devastating impact it's having on women and children — and for her trouble, she's been relentlessly misrepresented in the media and attacked by narcissist activists who have less moral courage in their whole body than she has in her pinkie finger.
This week Amy Eileen Hamm and Chris Elston erected a billboard in Vancouver expressing a simple message of affection in thanks for her bravery and advocacy. A similar poster was recently pulled in the UK, so they surely anticipated push-back — but it's still astonishing that noisy idiots were able to champion censorship and get it pulled within 24 hours. This is just the latest example of activists trampling the concept of free speech and engaging in large-scale public misogyny, routinely tossing out their favourite woman-hating epithet: "TERF".
For some, this may be the first time they've experienced the cult-like rhetoric and mobbing firsthand. People who dare to express solidarity with Rowling are shouted down as being hateful and exclusionary, and a local politician has even called for Amy and Chris' workplaces to be targeted. As Canadians, we need to stand together against this cultural bigotry — even when it's coming from the people closest to us.
As Rowling wrote in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, "it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." I would argue that it's harder, actually, and the most painful moments since I've engaged with this topic last year have come when people I admire and love mistake my concern for women's rights and free speech as being transphobic. But if people continue to shut up and self-censor, these bigots will never be held accountable for the damage their delusional worldview is wreaking on our society.
In her epic blog post detailing her emotional journey through this debate, Rowling wrote: “The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women... to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is nonsense.”
I couldn't agree more. I keep coming back to the image of Dumbledore, surrounded on all sides by enemies, fighting through the swirling darkness to ensure that Harry can return to Hogwarts safely. I feel like that small bespectacled boy in the presence of a great wizard when I read the wise, measured and compassionate words of J.K. Rowling.
"And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure."

2017 reading wrap-up
I don’t normally do this, but I figured that since this year was the first year I kept track of the books I read and also set a specific goal (1/3 books by authors of color), I thought it could be interesting to see what I read in 2017. And yeah, this is a little late but I didn’t have laptop over Christmas break so *shrug*.
I read 186 books total, with 73 being by authors of color. (That’s actually 11 more books than I needed to read, so yay for being an overachiever.) I think having a specific number to aim for helped me to diversify my reading and push me to read things I wouldn’t normally have read and I want to continue doing that. Of those 186 books, 108 had a person of color as a pov character and 61 had a LGBTQIAP+ main character. I think I’ll try to focus on reading more books with good disability representation next year because I only read 23 books with a disabled main character (not counting thrillers that used mental health as an an unreliable narrator plot twist because ugh).
I read mostly the same number of books (between 9-20) each month during school or summer, which surprised me since I normally think of myself as reading more during vacations. Also, I read 9 books when I should have been doing NaNoWriMo, which might explain why I didn’t finish..
Anyway, here’s the whole list below the cut if anyone wants to see!
