The American experiment was unique and improbable in 1776, when Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence and the American colonies defied Britain, the most powerful nation on earth at the time. As we look around the world at how difficult it is for democracy and freedom to take hold and flourish, America is a political miracle. 🇺🇸 In 1787, when the Founding Fathers had hammered out the U.S. Constitution in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin told an inquiring woman what the gathering had produced, "A republic, madam, if you can keep it." Jefferson also knew how great the American experiment's appeal would be to others. "The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776, have spread across too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume the engines and all who work them." Unity. Civility. Democracy. Freedom. Love our country. Love our countrymen. #uscapitol #independenceday #usa #ronaldreaganquotes #acrylicpainting #sejpaints #americanexperiment #foundingfathers #1776 #freedom #unity #democracy #declarationofindependence #usconstitution (at Carriage House Studio of Windy Acre Cottage) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfbxAh2O7h6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

the social theory anon again, thank you so much for taking your time to answer my ask!!! i got a little impatient right after i sent it and combed your blog in hopes of maybe you mentioning some books and whatnot and found some of your thoughts and analysis on supernatural. you talk about “the presentation of self in everyday life” and “discipline and punish” in some of them and i bought them right away. have already read through foucault’s book twice 😭😭 it’s so fascinating. i’ll definitely check out your other recommendations!!
WOW, anon you are SERIOUS about this, I LOVE IT.
In that case, I also recommend picking up:
Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley
Huxley takes mescaline and can't stop talking about drapery, absolutely wild meditation on what reality actually means
2. Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu
Theoretical musings on what marks class differences above and beyond simple economics; suggests replication of status occurs through culture, social networks, etc. For a brief intro, see: https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/philosophy/works/fr/bourdieu-forms-capital.htm
3. Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Continuity and Change in the Cathedrals of Consumption and/or The McDonaldization of Society, both by George Ritzer
Posit consumption and capitalism as the new dominant 'religion', which constantly has to be repackaged in new and 'exciting' ways in order to keep us complacent
4. Second Thoughts on Paradigms by Thomas Kuhn
I had to read this in undergrad and then come up with my own definition of a paradigm. Broke my brain in a good way. Available here: https://mail.uomustansiriyah.edu.iq/media/lectures/10/10_2019_02_17!07_45_06_PM.pdf
5. Kinsey - PBS
Okay this one is actually a documentary ON a theorist. Alfred Kinsey is debatably even a theorist, but he's responsible for a lot of our modern understanding of sexuality and his research and life were WILD. This documentary is 100% worth the watch. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/kinsey/
6. Capital by Karl Marx
Reading this will not help you understand Marx any better than reading what others have written about him. But it WILL give you street cred and deliver some of the most batshit insane sentences you will ever read.

Be-you-ty Contest: Women Empowerment
According to the Oxford Dictionary, beauty contest is a competition for a prize given to the women judged the most beautiful. Back in the fourth century B.C., the contest originally started with man and there's no record in the history that it started with a woman. A "contest of physique" called "euandria" was held yearly at Panathenaea an athenian festival. Athenaeus of Naucratis, a greek rhetorician and grammarian clearly stated that the euandria was a beauty contest. The winner of this contest received weapons as prizes, ribboned by his friend, lead the procession to the temple and was given a crown of myrtles (Crowther, 1985).
From the past, beauty contest started from man and now it's more open to woman. Beauty contest empowers women, it shows that beauty contest is not only for man. It proves, woman can do what man can and we our not limited by our sex category. In international beauty contest, countries send their delegates to fight for the crown. Each contestant promote the culture of their country through their vivid costumes, evening gown, action or movement, and the way they answer to the question given. Also international beauty contest help the society through introducing the possible solution to certain issue using advocacies.
Beauty contestant can inspire audience to be more confident and brave. Audience may look at the beauty contestant as their role model to continue to follow their dreams. Audience will be more open to the current problems of the society and will be inspired to their advocacies.
Beauty contest or pageants aims to empower women. However there are opposite opinion from the people, telling that beauty contest is a discrimination to woman. Actually it depends on how a person look at the contestant, some may feel jealous to their beauty, some are amazed to their talent and skills, it depends on the perspective of a person. Beauty contest are created for us women to be more skillful and talented. Inspiring other women to be confident and be braved. #

Article #3 (2nd Quarter)
Beauty Within
For the longest time, there has been an ongoing debate about whether or not Beauty Pageants are empowering or degrading to women and whether Beauty Pageants promote feminism. The first ever recorded Beauty Pageant was way back, 1839, held during the Eglinton Tournament as part of a re-enactment of a medieval joust in Scotland. This Pageant sets the basic groundwork for the future Beauty Pageants to be held in the coming years
Nowadays Modern Beauty Pageants not only judge the contestants based on physical attributes but in time the criteria evolved and added new standards such as personality, intelligence, talent, character, and charitable involvement. This is why most have slowly changed their perception of beauty pageants
Beauty is a very subjective term as they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" meaning that there are no set standards for beauty, Then you must be wondering if Beauty in it of itself is subjective and cannot fit into certain standards what is the purpose of Beauty Pageants then?. Well according to Miss Aïssatou Odia Barry, "beauty contests have a dark history of degradation. But, with an honest commitment to inclusion, they can easily turn into meaningful spaces for contestants to showcase their intelligence, ingenuity, compassion, and creativity."-Believe it or not many forget that the question and answer portion has one of the largest impacts on your chances of winning, through these questions the judges can test ones intelligence and can truly know what the contestants' intentions are for joining. The same goes with the other parts of the contest like the National costume, although it might seem simple and can often be a minor part it is actually something that judges are looking forward to. National costumes represent the very diverse cultural background of each contestant or representative, using this segment the contestants can show their national pride toward the country/state they are representing
Beauty pageants have come a long from what it was before and I like many other women support feminism, is not what other women can tell you what feminism is or not, I believe that feminism can be any way of supporting women and celebrating them for their intelligence and creativity and all the contributions women have made. Beauty Pageants nowadays have shown that any woman of any size, shape, and color are all capable of representing their country and at the same time empower the women around them.
In conclusion Beauty Pageants are not all about degrading women they test ones intelligence, creativity, diplomacy and many more. I think instead of dwelling in the dark past of Beauty Pageants we should look forward to its future and support the many changes happening every year.It is wonderful to see that nowadays more young girls are able to see themselves in these Contestants because from the start that is what Beauty Pageants want, the ability to inspire many young women to gain confidence andlove their self no matter what

The Law Of Mifepristone And The FDA
By Allison Yue, Rice University Class of 2026
May 22, 2023
Tumblr media
For the first time in history, a judge has single-handedly ordered that a specific drug–mifepristone–be taken off the market. Mifepristone, commonly used for medical abortions, is part of a two-step routine more than five million women in the United States have used to safely terminate their pregnancies.
On April 7, 2023, Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk of the Northern District of Texas issued a 67-page order weighing on the lawsuit filed by the Alliance of Hippocratic Medicine, which includes several major anti-abortion organizations, against the FDA. This preliminary ruling invalidated the FDA’s over 20 year approval of mifepristone for two main reasons: First, that the FDA was wrong to approve it because it’s not safe for the women who take it, even though it’s been approved for over 20 years and widely recognized to be safer than Tylenol. It’s approved for use in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy and is used in dozens of countries. Second, the judge also banned sending any abortion medication through the mail by reviving the Comstock Act, which was passed in 1873 and designed to use the US mail to impose a broad morality rule by censoring what could and couldn’t be sent through the mail. This act, considered a relic  by Roe v. Wade, prevented mailing anything related to contraception or abortion, but also anything “obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy, or vile.” Notably, while never actually repealed, it hasn’t been truly enforced since the 1930s, when a court ruled it could only be used if someone was specifically intending to mail something for illegal use in an abortion.
In contrast to the claims made in this decision, mifepristone is legal and has medical uses other than abortion, like cancer treatment. This particular judge is very well-known for his opposition to abortion, and was handpicked by the plaintiffs, the Alliance of Hippocratic Medicine, among all the federal district courts in the country. But on the same day Judge Kacsmaryk issued his ruling, Judge Thomas O. Rice of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington issued a ruling that essentially came to the opposite conclusion in a lawsuit filed by several district attorneys in a number of Democratic states challenging the renewed FDA restrictions preventing access to mifepristone. Judge Rice’s decision worked to protect availability of mifepristone in these states; due to the conflict between the two rulings, experts have considered it “logistically untenable for the F.D.A. to apply one set of rules about a drug to some states and not others,” meaning the order had national implications.
After Roe v. Wade was overturned, the message was basically that the power was being sent back to the states. But what this ruling would mean is that when it comes to this, it wouldn’t matter what a state wants or how the people there vote–it would be a national ban, which is exactly the type of thing lots of members of Congress said wouldn’t happen after Roe was overturned. Additionally, there is also a concern about precedent here that would have nothing to do with abortion: if this rule were allowed to stand, that would mean the FDA can approve a drug, it can then be used for decades with lots of evidence that it’s very safe, and then one judge can have it pulled off the shelves nationwide.
As it currently stands, access to the drug will remain unchanged as the Supreme Court issued a temporary order staying any changes until the case winds its way up appeals courts to the Supreme Court itself. This case will likely then be the most major abortion case the Supreme Court has faced since Roe v. Wade.

Adolf Hitler in Berlin, 1938. (n.d.-b). https://www.bridgemanimages.com/en-US/noartistknown/adolf-hitler-in-berlin-1938/photograph/asset/5174473
Dated 1938 in Berlin.
It's been five years since Hitler became Chancellor, and a lot has changed in that time. We used to be affluent people. Our neighbourhood was a haven for the city's elite, and many well-known people called it home. My dad was a banker for a major firm, and my mom was a gorgeous homemaker. I was born into a family where I am the only child. Our name is Goldberg, and we are a family.
"Kristallnacht" occurred on November 9th, 1938.
For the Jewish people, Kristallnacht was one of the greatest acts of hatred and dread ever committed. A furious crowd set fire to my father's workplace, and they either stole or destroyed whatever worth they found inside. Wrapping around the whole structure was a white banner that said "Jude" and included a Star of David in the centre. All of my father's hard work and his greatest accomplishments were destroyed in a single night. It was the first time I'd ever witnessed such an overt exhibition of hostility, and I genuinely feared for my safety. In a sense, we were all in it together.
The Ghettos, January 21, 1939,
At some ungodly hour of the morning, I was awakened by a pounding on the door. After giving it a little further consideration, I informed my parents that the mailman had arrived. When he opened the door, a shotgun barrel was pointed directly at my father's noggin. The Gestapo had arrived. My dad insisted on staying in Berlin despite the dangers there because of his connections in the administration. The mistake he made cost us everything. Each and every Jew in our area was picked up and sent to the outskirts of town. They made us all live in conditions akin to that of canine kennels. We were not allowed to leave our cells, and our diet consisted solely of bread and a salty cabbage soup served twice a day. We were beaten or even put to death if we raised a fuss. Nobody would volunteer any opinions.
Infamy: The Eleventh of July, 1941: Extermination
Since we were confined to the ghettos, two years had passed. As one by one of our neighbours vanished, I knew that soon my own family would follow. Inexplicably, on this day, our entire family was shoved into a train cart and taken away. After a long, tiring 6-hour journey, we made it here. Suffocation and being crushed to death claimed the lives of many of us. We lucked out and ended up on the fringes. A huge watchtower and razor-sharp barbed wire welcomed us at the camp. From the start, I assumed that we were going to perish here. We were in line for quite some time before finally being called up to be branded and put into the prisoner database. What was going on, we had committed no wrongdoing. In the years after my father and I were separated from her, my search for her yielded no leads. Hopefully, she's at peace now.
Pitch black. Utter darkness.
This was what I first saw the day I was loaded into the cage. The thick steel door closed in front of me with a loud slam as the sound of the impact reverberated around me. I was boxed in with nowhere to escape. My fate was sealed. I couldn't make out what was going on around me. All I knew was that I was in a small steel cage, barely big enough to hold me in.

Detective TV Series: The Pinkertons (2014) -  I give this series 3.5 out of 5 stars.  It wasn't that great.   But it kept my attention from the beginning to the end because it is about a real person in American history:  Allan Pinkerton.  He was like Sherlock Holmes.  Only Mr. Holmes is a fictional character.  Allan Pinkerton was a real detective back in the days of the wild wild west.
