Our Flag Means Death S2 Spoilers!

Something people doesn't seem to realize, is that pacing has a key impact to a story. Yes, the tale you want to tell can be the best someone has ever come up with, but if your pacing of it is awful, it pulls the whole story down with it. To rushed pacing? It loses meaning and impact, because there's no time to become attached. To slow paced? It becomes boring and uninteresting, finishing the book, show or movie feels more like a task than actual fun.

The first 4 episodes of season 2 of OFMD were awesome. The pacing was perfect, we had enough time to register what was happening and to sort out our emotions. I was a bit thrown off by ep 5. Because, while still good paced, you can start the see the problems because of the missing 2 eps ( for example the skipped fight, instead choosing to tell, not show. )-

Then episode 6 and 7 happened. And oh boi, I wanted to drop the show, only my love for it keeping me going.

I know that it isn't David Jenkins and the production team's fault, since the 2 episodes got cut, giving us the total of 8. But I can't excuse the decision to cram the plot of 10 eps into 8. If you have so little time left, why don't just cut some 'unimportant' storypoints?

Like Ned Lowe, he was introduced and died in the same episode. His purpose was to give GentleBeard development I know, that still doesn't give him enough importance to let him stay in the shortened version. Just like the second break-up from GentleBeard we got in ep 7.

Instead we got very out-of-character characters, Stede for example. I can see why he acts the way he does in ep 7. It would make sense, had he more time to have proper character development! Instead he feels weird, plus the very very uncomfortable second-hand embarrassment scenes (like the fight with Zheng). And sadly after ep 3, I couldn't feel the same chemistry GentleBeard had in S1. While there were cute scenes, like the end of ep5, I felt like something was missing to make me actually care. It's just my feelings, so not very important, but it was a bit disappointing.

The end of ep 7 gave me hope. Because it was a perfect way to introduce a villain, who's a genuine threat to our heros. And I maybe like Prince Ricky a bit to much. Then ep 8 came crushing down while drowing my love for OFMD, that made me ignore everything wrong with the second half of S2.

I like ep 8, well the first few minutes. It felt like I finally had time to see what's happening and David Jenkins didn't leave us completely clueless. ( Let's ignore the logic holes since it was is a comedy show and they were always there. ) And I was way to busy squieking like a pig of happiness to think critical.

I have many criticism points, but will only focus on one;

Izzy's death. And by god, I. Am. Pissed. Killing a character that is beloved by the fandom isn't the problem. While I love him, he's my favorite, I also love a good ol' angst. But he was in the middle of his redemption arc, and ending this with death is just such weak writing. I have nothing against killing a character off for development. Iron man for example, his whole story is about becoming a better person and jumping over his ego. And it ends just like Izzy in death. But Tony was through his arc, his death was the final, showing he has changed, showing he would do everything to save the universe and more important, the people he loves.

If Izzy died at the start of or before S2 I wouldn't complain, because it would've been perfect for him. Maybe if he died a more impactful death I wouldn't write this. But you can't make a character finally change and then destroy the meaning of it by killing him off in the fucking middle of the change. It would've had so much more impact seeing how he becomes a part of the crew he loathed not even a few weeks ago. Episode 5 did that great, while a bit fast. I like how he and Stede get along. Growing closer. It was a bit too fast paced, and I hoped for them to finally communicate, not talk. The same with Ed, I wanted him and Izzy to finally talk to eachother and not through eachother. However, giving us acutally communication while Izzy's fucking dying is not how you give impact. (And credit where credit's due; I really like that dialog, it was beautiful and the right words choosen to explain how Izzy feels)

Not to forget what a meaning it conveys. Izzy always did what he thought was right, even when it was completely wrong. But when he finally grows and begins to do actually what is right and let's go of Ed, he dies?

Still, I wouldn't say that they shouldn't have done a season 2 at all. It has great potential and I can see what they were going for. So, while it has it's problem's, it's nothing what a good fanfic can't fix. So I look forward to the amazing works that will build up on this hot mess and / or 'correct' it.

So bye, I'll go cry and give the last three episodes of S2 of OFMD, the last 20 minutes of S2 Go treatment T^T (except that GO S2 was fucking fantastic through the whole season)

caine is a little perplexed as to why you stay at the lake all the time, your room does have water... though, to be fair, your room is blocked off and small. i think it would take him a while to directly interact with you but just know that every night when you sing hes listening to you... actually now that i think about it, i dont think it would take him long to make himself known, he would probably clap and applaud you after one of your personal performances... probably makes sailor jokes, because, you know, sea stuff and mermaid lore... wants to include you more in stuff so he probably does IHAs that are lake themed, or perhaps makes something sort of like a portable tank..

POMNI:

she probably mistakes you for an NPC for a moment LMAO... i was going to go with an idea that pomni would be into mythology and stuff but now that i think about it, i actually see the opposite now thats more of something i can see zooble and gangle being into... not many ideas for pomni, unfortunately, but i think she would be friendly around you for manners

RAGATHA:

she thinks your really pretty, i think... while ragatha doesnt strike me as the type to be into mythology and stuff, i think she subconsciously is attracted to you because she grew up on stories about mermaids, fairies, and princesses... sure she doesnt remember all that since shes gotten stuck in the digital world, but the instinct to be near you is still there... i think if she got caught listening to you sing she would be so embarrassed, probably tries to excuse herself unless you tell her she can stay.. having someone come by down to the lake is nice, to finally have company

JAX:

has probably snagged your comb and darted to the shore of the lake far enough so that you cant reasonably crawl out of the water and grab it back, assuming you actively need water to survive instead of mobility... but either is really mean in my opinion.. toss him into the water/j actually i dont think he can swim, jax doesnt look like the kind of person to swim.. omg omg bonding moment for when you two get closer, imagine teaching him how to (admin never learned how to swim so theyre unqualified to write this </3)

KINGER:

rarely leaves the tent but lets say he goes down to the lake one day while you happen to be out.. similar to pomni i think he would mistake you for an NPC simply because you are almost never in the tent... i think he would enjoy your singing, though, very calming and it eases him.. quietly listens and returns a few times when he sees youre out. meek apologies when hes caught, hes almost sheepish about it and admits that he should have asked before getting up in your business.. ooo i love this man

ZOOBLE:

"so like, do you drown people," just straight up, probably asks this after a day of jax being more annoying than usual... as mentioned earlier i think they would be really into mythological creatures and lore, as well as cryptids, both before and after joining the circus... sure you probably arent lore accurate to mermaid stories in the real world, but i think they would like to learn about youre whole deal.. sometimes helps you get stuff out of your hair if things get tangled up

GANGLE:

gangle is what gets tangled up in your hair^/j

no but i think she would also be very interested in your whole deal, but is less blunt about it unlike zooble... also thinks your pretty.. i think she would bring stuff down to the lake for you guys to do together, like games and drawing stuff... its nice for the both of you to be away from everyone else but still have company in someone who knows what its like to be cast to the side; be it due to shyness or being locked to a place

i do! i'm not so great at it with oneshots but with multichapters my practice is to reply to all the previous chapter's comments right before i post the next one. it keeps me disciplined about it, since i think it's important to engage with and thank my readers.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

probably the year of what now... i was going for hopeful melancholy but let's be honest. i cried writing it

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

i mean i don't really do unqualified happy endings lmao there's always something bittersweet or complicated about it. maybe love is a battle i can win? since i finished writing it on christmas eve and something about the festive spirit must have suffused my attitude.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

thankfully not, or if i have it wasn't consequential enough to recall it.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

not really, no. i'm more of a fade-to-black kind of gal. i have the utmost respect for those who do write it, since i find it difficult and ultimately would rather focus my energy on other parts of my writing.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

not really, no. they can be fun but it's difficult to find a scenario that feels plausible (as someone obsessed with that sort of thing lmao). i do have a hankering to somehow connect downton abbey and peaky blinders together, since they occur in exactly the same period from very different societal perspectives. i have no idea how, however. the casual viewer's choice would be putting mary and tommy together, but mary's far too much of a snob, and sybil too much of an idealist. thomas, maybe? hmm now i'm thinking about it maybe i'll do it and write something gen.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge. i have had edits stolen and put on tiktok, though, which was enraging.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

i have! no forest, no trees was translated into russian, and the first few chapters of the lathe have been translated into german.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

i have not. i don't think i'm a collaborative enough person for that lmao

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

i'm not sure i have one! definitely have some i prefer to write but i like them all for different reasons, and i also err on the side of character work rather than straightforward fandom-style shipping.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

there's a elrond & thranduil wip sitting in my google docs waiting for its final few sections. i keep going back to it and rereading it and then never adding anything else, though it really does need those extra sections to be fit for uploading. there's also private eyes, which i did enjoy writing, but i think my style and interests have evolved somewhat beyond it now. i'm also somewhat working on a thoroughbred racing tommyalfie au set in the 1970s, but i fear my own lack of knowledge about the industry will prevent me ever being quite happy enough with it to post.

16. What are your writing strengths?

dialogue. i love me some dialogue. i also love doing research and i think i'm good at utilising that research in a thematically effective way.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i make things way longer than they need to be lol. i'm also trying to get away from over-explaining in an internal monologue and instead trying to trust the reader and the writing to speak for itself.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i can't say i've ever really had an opinion on this. i probably wouldn't use another language for pivotal dialogue, even if it's footnoted, since it can take a non-speaking reader out of the flow of the scene, but overall i don't really mind and sometimes it can be effective.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

probably something like marvel or once upon a time back on ff.net. those were most certainly NOT the days.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

hmmm definite recency bias coming in here but it's got to be either the lathe or better by you, better than me. honourable mention (only because it's so much shorter) to vagues.

much too detailed and unqualified review of Rush! that no one asked for under the cut

as a disclaimer, I gave each song two listens, one on spotify just focusing on the music and another one watching the lyric videos (and a translation where needed lol), also I didn't review the last three songs because they've been out a while I guess?

Own My Mind

First listen: don't hate it, love the bass line, feels like it's missing something I can't pinpoint, love the short guitar solo, will probably enjoy this more live and singing along, 6/10

Second listen: actually like it better on the second listen, bumped to 7/10, music is better than the lyrics but it's not horible, there's good moments but then it just fails to keep up lyrically I think

Gossip

First listen: like it more than I thought from the preview, so short??, it's okay, I also still haven't watched the video what's wrong with me, good guitar, 7/10

Second listen: don't think the lyrics are bad, it's a bit of a predictable topic maybe, but it's not bad!

Timezone

First listen: the beginning reminds me of another song but I can't pinpoint it but it's bugging me now, not bad, but it's sounding less like Maneskin than the other songs to me, 5/10

Second listen: figured it out on the second listen: the beginning is giving me Under The Bridge vibes, lyrics are mid-tier, ignoring all context, it's okay but I'm not blown away

Bla Bla Bla

First listen: someone said this sounds like NDW and as a German I can't unhear, I don't like the way Damiano sings in this one sorry, the arrangement isn't bad, like the bass line and how it evolves but just… put different singing over it lmao, not one I'll put on actively unless it comes on shuffle probably, 4/10

Second listen: yup, still not vibing with this, the lyrics aren't really doing this song any favours I feel, this sounds like they had a good idea music-wise and then just fucked around in the studio and spontaneously put silly lyrics over it but... then never improved them and just recorded it like that, gonna have to lower it to 3/10 just for that mess

Baby Said

First listen: I don't hate it??, could be fun, yeah okay I'm vibin, I don't mind this at all, 7/10

Second listen: yeah this is fun, I'm probably gonna like this a little more with every listen, the lyric video is also somewhat making me loose my mind like ma'am I'm already gay, fuck it I'm gonna bump it to a 8/10

Gasoline

First listen: ok, obviously not new but let's give it a good listen again, I do like this more than when it came out now?, quite tight musically, not gonna start discussing any context because enough has been said about that, ignoring all of that probably 7/10

Second listen: the lyrics aren't bad, I'd be able to enjoy them more if they hadn't marketed it the way they did I think

Feel

First listen: not bad, good riff, feels old school, in a good way, a bit of a Seven Nation Army mood, they're never gonna get over the cocaine thing are they lmao, 8/10

Second listen: I still like it, maneskin songs about sex in English are the most fun I feel, everything else might be better done in Italian still

Don't Wanna Sleep

First listen: I think Vic will really vibe to this live but I also think I'm gonna forget about this song quite quickly unless I listen to it regularly lol, not bad but nothing special I think?, 6/10

Second listen: second listen didn't really change my opinion, pretty average, gotta appreciate Thomas' dancing in the lyric video though ahh, he heard the lyrics "dance dance dance until I die" and went "yes"

Kool Kids

First listen: I stand by my opinion that this is trying to be punk but it's just not quite working out, also what's with Damiano's enunciation?, did he change accents?, did he have water in his mouth he forgot to swallow before starting to sing?, this definitely sounded better live lol sorry, I still don't vibe with this really, 3/10

Second listen: I'm not sure why I'm watching the lyric video because I unfortunately have read the lyrics before and I'm still not impressed lol sorry

If Not For You

First listen: the whiplash from going to this after kool kids, nice, cute, not groundbreaking, 6/10

Second listen: the lyrics are very dramatic but not in a way I particularly enjoy, not for me I think

First listen: I quite like this actually, it's a fun sound, can't argue with that, 7/10

Second listen: do I like the lyrics or do I just enjoy the aesthetic of the lyric video, it's better than a number of other songs on here for sure, might grow on me more in the future

Mark Chapman

First listen: this immediately sounds much better, italian songs just do it better, Damiano's voice just has a different quality in his mother tongue, 9/10

Second listen: even better on the second listen, potentially the 10/10 of the album, good lyrics, title makes more sense now lol but yes, think it's my favourite on the album overall

La Fine

First listen: fun fact, this is my first time listening to this because I had auditory issues with my brain apparently lol, hmm yes I'm vibing, you know it's a good sign when I'm wiggling in my seat listening lol, filed under "songs I'll desperatly try to sing along to live and fail spectacularly", 9/10

Second listen: yeah this is damn good, definitely a 9/10 at least, lyrics are amazing, they just know what they're doing in Italian, it's gorgeous

Il Dono Della Vita

First listen: it starts very abruptly, he just sounds very gorgeous in Italian, pretty song, 8/10

MoM hot takes

So like...I know I am about to provide some controversial yet brave opinions, and if you disagree I would love to hear your takes. Just plz explain yourself so I can actually understand your point of view. These are my personal opinions, and should be treated as such -- not as a Master’s thesis level dissertation on the movie. Obvs, spoilers ahead!

I’ll start with the good stuff:

- Y’all....y’all...Lizzie absolutely EATS in this movie. She is giving a legitimate Oscar worthy performance. Benedict, Xochitl and Rachel McAdams also absolutely GIVE in their performances, and I love them. But Lizzie is just next level, she put her whole neck, her back, her p*ssy and her crack into it.

- I’m so excited for America Chavez’s future in the MCU...also, #queerrights

- “Run”

- *shakes head* “Mmm-mmm”...I almost came

- Good GOD the score during the dream walking scene, Lizzie’s hand acting, the whole sha-bang was just *chef’s kiss*

Onto my real beef with the ~film~:

- They did our girl Wanda so fucking dirty lmao, like let her be happy, she was making progress post-Wandavision!

- Like, I’m actually convinced Sam Raimi did not watch Wandavision. I say this, because the whole character arc of Wanda doing something unsavory and then repenting at the end is, like - literally Wandavision’s whole point for her character?

- I mean she already went through the whole “I don’t want to hurt anyone!!” thing in Wandavision. It feels like we regressed.

- ^ the above can be explained by the Darkhold’s effects on her, which brings me to my next point

- They reallllly should’ve delved deeper into the Darkhold. The way that they just flippantly mentioned it and didn’t really explain it’s deep rooted effects on Wanda further seemed so lazy and did a true disservice to her character for pure shock value and to speed up the plot

- That musical note battle scene and the twins singing had the entire theater in nervous uncomfortable laughter with quite a few audible “what the fuck”s

- Like I fully know Wanda/Scarlet Witch is very villainy in the comics, but a) this is the MCU, not a direct interpretation of the comics and b) I wouldn’t have minded if it WAS a direct interpretation of the comics (#women’s rights AND #women’s wrongs!) , but it literally wasn’t because c) if they literally k*lled her off...they wasted SO much of her story and potential for the MCU.

- Overall, I just felt like the movie was waaaay too rushed, too all over the place, and definitely a Sam Raimi movie, NOT a Marvel movie. Which, as a fan, is disappointing when I go to see a MCU film for the characters and story and not for a specific director’s shtick/signature

Again, feel free to tell me I’m wrong! I totally respect and understand why some people think it was the best movie ever, but in my unqualified, unsolicited (yet humble) opinion, it was disappointing. :/ (still not the worst MCU movie, and I will definitely be giving it even more repeat watches)

🔥 One about your most favorite 3H character and one about your least favorite 3H character

this got a bit long lmao under the cut it goes

Fave: Claude

I've made one of my other unpopular opinions about him - that I don't give a shit about his rendition of the diary scene - pretty clear already, so I guess another unpopular opinion I have is that I also don't really give a shit about his S support?

Like, do I think it - or at least the context before it - could have been done better? Yeah, and I actually added a bit to my rewrite covering that after thinking about this very thing a bit (in the Misc. section, with the jist being that it's more foreshadowed in his route specifically that he's going to leave). But like, the most common complaint with it that I've personally seen is that he thrusts Byleth into a leadership position, but like... what else can realistically happen that would perfectly soothe both characters?

Cuz Rhea's dead, Dimitri's dead, Edelgard's dead - all leaders are dead, and since the game is stupid and doesn't allow side characters to be integral to the main story (meaning Felix, Ferdinand, and Seteth can't just take over these empty roles should they be alive) that leaves exactly two characters left on VW to be able to take on the role of leader of Fodlan: Claude or Byleth. Both of whom, mind, are someone people don't mind being the one to take over, so even with Byleth's inexperience with leading the people still have their faith in them.

And so if we go with the idea that Claude stays and leads Fodlan, Byleth just... does nothing? And just stay his side? Because if Byleth is unqualified to lead Fodlan then she'd be pretty much just as unqualified to lead the Church, so being archbishop is out. Does she stay by Claude's side long enough to pick up leadership skills? But how long would that take? Months, years? And what about Claude? It is specifically his ending with Byleth that shows that the Almyran throne can be taken in as little a time as a few months after he leaves Fodlan, so during that time Claude would most likely lose out on his dream of being able to lead Almyra - and depending on who takes the throne, that could be quite devastating.

So imo, it seems like it's either Byleth gets left in Fodlan to figure out the being the leader thing while Claude sets out to fight for the Almyran throne, or Claude (very likely, especially given the context of specifically Claude and Byleth's paired ending) gives up his dreams of being Almyra's king to stay by Byleth. Or, in a more cynical viewpoint, either Byleth can put on the big-boy pants and learn to lead or Claude falls into the "I'll give up my dreams for you <3" shitty trope.

That being said though their paired ending sucks major ass and I hate it. This is also something I ended up tweaking in the rewrite lmaooo but basically instead of Byleth becoming a useless damsel for Claude to swoop in and save her, having it to where they send correspondence to each other past the border lines (with Claude giving her advice she asks for, eventually growing into them giving mutual support in leadership) would make both a more unique ending and one where Byleth doesn't suddenly become incompetent in the literal one area of expertise they have.

Least fave: Balthus

I. Hate this guy so much lmao. Which might itself be an unpopular opinion, because at least recently I've seen a good bit of love - or at least positive vibes - for the guy. Fuck if I know why, this guy's a total asshole.

And while I have also gotten into this specific reason why I don't like Balthus before, I don't feel like digging for the fairly old post lmao so here it is again: I can't stand his supports with Claude and they account for a solid 70% of the reason at minimum as to why I can't stand him. It's already bad enough that he dangles extremely sensitive information about Claude over his head - which, mind, this is most likely to happen in pre-timeskip, when Claude is at max 18 and Balthis is at minimum 26 - and already it gets even worse when it's revealed that the reason this 26 year old grown ass man is threating someone nearly a decade younger than him is just because he wants to talk to said younger someone's mom who barely knows him, but the cherry on top is that this never gets resolved!

Balthus never takes back his blackmail, even by the end of the support chain - his saying that he Totally Wouldn't Sell Claude Out For Money He Swears is then literally immediately followed by him saying that he wouldn't do that because he "knows" that Claude won't go back on their "promise." That promise that Claude never made and makes clear he never made and that "promise" (read: blackmail) being "I won't rat you out if you let me meet your mom" meaning that Balthus never stepped back and thought "huh, wait a minute, maybe blackmailing someone with extremely sensitive information that could put them in danger is, like, kinda shitty of me to do actually" but no it's just a big haha funny joke don't take it serious guys Balthus is just a hoot n' holler.

It's ass, and I wish I could delete specifically Balthus from the game Doki Doki Literature Club style. Doesn't help that he's a gambling moocher which is a trait that already is kinda hard for me personally to like. I rank him Barely Above Makolov/10 for at least providing some neat bits of lore, if nothing else

hi! ah shit here we go again! just like last time, i’m going to write some about what my muses are going to be up to this round and also keep track of everything i have to write–– without gif icons this time because i’m too lazy to make any HAHA but as always, please like this post to plot! i’m going to cap this at three threads per muse for now, but if we can come up with a really fun plot or i feel like i can take it on i may be able to pick up more. we’ll see! anyway onto the state of the gremlins:

joomi is, once again, going thru it and will likely cry day one again, for entirely different reasons than last time. he is not upset about falling in rank or getting told his performance was bad (in fact he is very surprised he’s not last) but instead he’s emotional because the judges said they’re cheering for him. joomi has had a very hard life that included a lot of neglect and abuse and generally not being shown any positive attention so the idea of people supporting him so much even though he made mistakes is incredibly foreign and overwhelming. the good news is that now he doesn’t want to quit! he still doesn’t really want to be an idol, but he wants to do his best on next gen so the judges don’t feel like they misplaced their faith in him. after he gets the initial emotions out of his system and isn’t so overwhelmed anymore, he’ll be ready to get to work, and he’s a lot more confident in his singing. granted, joomi doesn’t have that much confidence at all, but it’s growing! he will gladly help anyone with their singing that asks for it/needs it, even if he feels deeply unqualified to do so, given he has very little musical training outside of piano. he also knows basically nothing about kpop but by a stroke of luck or divine intervention, i actually headcanoned that the only kpop he really listens to is wannabe’s taeyeon equivalent, and he’ll be performing one of her songs! so he already knows it, which also comes as a huge comfort. i wouldn’t say he’ll be relaxed, but he certainly feels a lot better now than he did preparing for last episode. that being said, he is not excited for the mcountdown performance at all and could probably use some additional help there, though honestly, nobody should expect him to do particularly well. he is just praying they put him in the back.

Yo! Id like to hear your thoughts on this if that's okay. A lot of people think kuzupeko would be unhealthy because she sees herself as his tool and subsequently can never recover from that mindset and therefore it'd be an abusive relationship with a huge power dynamic. thoughts?

I don’t usually discuss this in a public place because I don’t ever feel like I need to justify myself, and I also don’t care enough about other people’s opinions of fictional ships to let it affect my own, lmao.

I have tons of reasons why I think they can ultimately reach a healthy relationship (as healthy as a crime family can be at least), but I don’t really wanna make a whole essay about it, so I’ll leave it to a few key points: a lot of people fail to realize that Peko’s conditioned mindset about being a tool isn’t just about her vs Fuyuhiko, it’s about her vs the entire world. She does not think she’s human. Automatically, she thinks she’s lesser than everybody else in the world. I mean, imagine trying to be friends with somebody who does not think they’re human; it’d make me super uncomfortable. To believe that Peko could never recover from her mindset of being a tool means that she will never be on equal standing with everybody else in society (and thus could not form a healthy relationship with anyone), and I just think that’s very sad!

I think Fuyuhiko knew this too, hence his multiple attempts at getting her to be her own person in the world. That said, Fuyuhiko is not the person to get her to see this. He can be supportive, as he absolutely should, but Peko has to be the one who puts in the most work for herself. I’m a firm believer that Peko needs actual, professional third-party therapy to make strides in learning selfhood and autonomy, because if Fuyuhiko, the person she cared the most about, couldn’t get her to see it, then no unqualified person could either.

One last note: I don’t think Peko fell in love with Fuyuhiko because he always treated her like a human while others didn’t. She deserved that from everybody from the start. That’s basic human decency that everyone deserves. She loves him for many reasons apart from that, and I think she shows that in many ways. She loves him for the person he is, just like he loves her for the person she is, and I think that parallel is beautiful!

i saw a thing abt how that film mother! was called “the worst film of the century” and got curious, so i went to rotten tomatoes only to discover that review was by rex reed and the film is actually majority fresh and y’all i rlly don’t give two shits abt that film but i am just rolling that somebody decided to take that man seriously

like a) you were in myra breckinridge how did that not just fuckin instakill your career as a film critic. how could anyone take your opinion seriously after that. might as well hire tommy wiseau to write reviews for you

b) he once wrote a review that suggested that south koreans make bad films bc they eat kimchi (?????) (like honest to god y’all that’s such a weird racist take i’m not even mad i’m just fucking puzzled)

c) the last time he was relevant was when he complained abt melissa mccarthy being fat and everybdy with a shred of decency said “man, fuck that guy”

d) he has multiple times been called on the carpet for literally not knowing what happened in a film he reviewed. i don’t mean “he didn’t get it” i mean he couldn’t even write an accurate synopsis, presumably bc he was too busy reading his own reviews while jackin it (his mother! review actually starts out by quoting what he apparently thought was a super sick burn from his review of black swan). he once walked out of a film 20min in and then proceeded to inaccurately review the rest of it anyway (even tho it was an anthology of short films packed together)

e) he calls other reviewers “pretentious” for trying to analyze the film (which for those of you keeping score at home is literally their jobs)

f) his own review is basically completely bereft of all substance. he complains that aronofsky is pretentious and stealing from fellini/polanski/kubrick (to which i’m just gonna point to that jean-luc godard quote abt originality and call it a day here). he complains abt other reviewers being pretentious by actually uhhhh reviewing the fucking film. he doesn’t like the film bc it’s bad, except for the cinematography (the only like...actual thing of substance he mentions abt the film at all)

tl;dr i have 0 interest in the film but i have a theory rex reed is actually a disgruntled filmmaker’s strawman critic made flesh

So I know this isn't queen related but I'm reading Elton John's book rn and all of a sudden he referred to lesbians as 'dykes' and being a lesbian myself I genuinely dont know if I'm over thinking it but I dont see how that's okay lmao and being that hes gay himself and rides for the community so hard you would think he wouldn't refer to a large section of the community by a slur but 🤷‍♀️ dont get me wrong I love him and I respect everything he does and the fact that he was Freddie's friend but.. I can't wrap my head around it 🤨 I just wanna see If it's only me who feels a bit questionable about it because I genuinely dont know if I'm overthinking it. I'm genuinely a bit disappointed because I look at Elton as one of my favourite musicians and idols 🤷‍♀️

Well, you’re in the inbox of someone who’s unqualified to talk about this on multiple fronts lol. I’m going to give my opinion since you asked, but just keep that in mind. First of all, it’s justified to be uncomfortable with a slur, especially when you’re in the group affected by it. Slurs make our skin crawl for a reason. In this case, maybe he felt like he could say it because he’s gay, in the way Freddie said f*gg*t sometimes, but then again, in the same way I don’t think it’s okay for lesbians to use that word since they’re not gay men, I don’t think it’s okay for gay men to use d*ke when they’re not lesbians, either. You know? But maybe he doesn’t see it that way and thinks “ayy we’re all gay here, it’s all in good fun.” I don’t know, I don’t know much about Elton tbh. He’s also from a different generation who might not see the issue with other gay people using that word. Even if he did mean it in the way I just mentioned, I think you still have the right to disapprove of his usage of the slur. It’s always hard when someone we respect and admire does something like this and I’d guess you’re not the only one who finds this questionable. Ultimately, it’s up to you regarding whether or not this is something that makes you see him differently, or if you can put it in its place. My two cents is that he should’ve been more mindful of the impact of language, especially in his published writing.

so........................

for learning meanings........ it’s a lot of work, there’s a lot of detail and a lot of different things to think about during readings, I’ve been learning tarot for around seven years on and off and I still don’t remember everything!

so IMO it’s best not to come at tarot with the intent to Learn Everything before you start! it’s the perfect thing to learn as you go! my advice would be to just kinda throw yourself in. when you first get a deck, go through the cards and vibe with them some and look at their meanings, but mostly just kinda contemplate them, don’t try to memorise everything at once. start doing readings, look stuff up as you go............. I would recommend keeping a journal where you document your readings............ which will help you with memory and picking up on patterns and connections....... uhhhh

I really like using apps as a companion as well! they can be a super good resource even if you don’t want to use them FOR readings necessarily

I use Galaxy Tarot as a convenient way to look up meanings and summaries of the cards when I just need to kinda jog my memory (though the descriptions aren’t super detailed), and it has a function where you can either do a reading with the app or you can do a reading yourself and then plug the cards you’ve drawn into the app, and it can help you with pointing out recurring themes and symbols and connections between the cards, which can be handy when you’re first starting out and maybe feel a little overwhelmed by the Amount Of Information you’re trying to take in

uhhhh another one I’ve used in the past is Labyrinthos Tarot, which is an app to help you learn and memorise the cards and their meanings., from what I can remember there are sorta, games and exercises to help with it, I forget exactly how it works since it’s been a while since I used it! but maybe that’s a good one to check out too?

I feel like apps is something i should’ve mentioned at the end but anyway moving on to the rest of it

most decks will come with a guidebook of some sort! so you’ve got the traditional rider waite tarot deck (which is probably the default deck most people think of when they think of tarot), and there are plenty of resources online such as Biddy Tarot which can give you a fairly detailed rundown of the card meanings! these meanings can be applied to variations of the rider waite cards, but lots of decks are a little wild and a little funky and are off doing their own thing while still following the basic rider waite structure, and if you receive a guidebook with a deck, that’s definitely an invaluable resource!! ‘cause it’ll give you the artist’s kinda interpretation and their meanings, their own personal touch, even if you then look up the card in more detail online

ALSO tarot is just a whole fuckin tonne about intuition as well though! so as much as it can feel like something where you need to focus on all the details and try and keep them all rigid and by-the-book, you might do a reading and feel yourself drawn in a certain different direction or just get a “feeling”, so you should definitely be open and flexible and listen to what your gut tells you as far as meanings go! plus, you will develop your own relationship to the cards and maybe draw your own personal meanings and associations! that’s definitely not something to fight against and don’t worry about whether that means you’re doing it “wrong” - you should listen to those feelings, those r important!! :D

lastly I will say, it can be helpful to have someone who is more experienced with tarot around who you feel you can ask for advice from or get second opinions from if there’s something you’re confused about! or who can give you tips and tricks from firsthand experience. like, it doesn’t have to be something you learn alone, and having a teacher or companion can be really helpful in terms of bouncing ideas and getting new perspectives! I throw this out there because I always forget to say things like this, ‘cause I forget that other people Are Not Me and other people like being around people lmao rip

and as far as starting decks go........... it really depends so much on what you want and what’s important to you! some people will say start with the traditional rider waite tarot, and if you decide to do that, you will certainly have a lot of resources at your disposal! it’s a valid place to start for sure

but there’s also SO many different decks out there with all sorts of themes and art and personality, and IMO......... I’d kinda urge you in the direction of choosing something you’re personally interested in and engaged with! it can make connecting with a deck easier and can help you stay interested and engaged during learning! but that’s just me

when I got my first deck the lady in the store kinda just took me to the collection of decks and just asked me which ones I vibed with and which one kinda called out to me or one I was drawn to, then she let me take a look at some of them and she showed me how to handle them and use them!! this was my first experience, n I was told just to go with what Feels Good And Right

n there’s so much cool art out there! and many interesting themes! you might not know which one you’ll latch onto until you see it, so take some time to look around and see what speaks to you c:

for instance, certain themes like cats or flowers, certain art styles, maybe certain series you’re into (I have two welcome to night vale decks n the raven’s prophecy by maggie stiefvater), or queer friendly decks! I have the Numinous Tarot which I ADORE, which is a deck with gorgeous artwork and extremely queer, all gender neutral language and lots of diverse designs, etc

so it depends what you’re into! take some time to feel it out, my friend

I would also like to throw out a mention to oracle decks as well! I actually started with oracle decks long before I used any tarot decks c:

I am................... very tired. and blanking on the best way to explain the difference between oracle and tarot decks, but you can look into this if you’re interested! lots of people use both or use them in conjunction with each other and there’s benefits to both n so on and so forth........

but in terms of Starting Out, and getting comfy with doing readings? they can also be really helpful in this regard! I found since oracle decks can have any number of cards and are less “structured” than tarot decks in a way, it can be really helpful as a way to get comfortable with things if you find, just, the Amount Of Detail that is involved in tarot decks overwhelming!!

it was something that helped me get the ~feel~ of doing readings and sensing with the cards and vibin and such, n get some practice drawing connections between cards and deriving meanings from the stories the cards present! but in a way that’s not quite as...... overwhelming?? as traditional tarot decks?? I was SUPER intimidated by just how extensive tarot decks were when I first started and I thought I’d never figure out what I was doing HAHAHA

but again, it’s just practice, I think!

where tarot will follow the same 78 cards and structure and is very traditional and I guess “rigid” is not exactly the right word?? but yeah?? oracle decks are a lot more flexible in what they represent and a lot more loose in the structures they can take

I do love oracle decks because of how varied they are!! each one is its own little system and its own unique universe and it’s really quite lovely, even if you aren’t into Actually Doing Readings with them, y’know?

but then, I find tarot decks the same way, what will all the different art styles and different people’s interpretations and renditions of the same story, like, it’s really fascinating!!

this has just turned into me rambling about how cool they are now

point is, do a little research into what sorts of decks and themes you might like to buy, when you get a chance I thoroughly recommend visiting a store so you can speak to someone who has some experience with tarot decks, they can help guide you when it comes to picking one and giving you some tips!! remember that it’s about intuition and following your gut as much as it is about memory and precision, so you should pick a deck that Feels Right

and uhhhhhhhhhhh

just kinda throw yourself in!! that’s literally my best advice!! you’re never gonna memorise everything beforehand (I’ve been learning on and off for seven years and I still often have to consult guidebooks and webpages) but you WILL absolutely learn as you go

it might feel very clumsy starting out, but as with any craft, you will improve with practice and begin to feel more comfy and confident with it as you go!

That’s so exciting for Kokoreva and Putintsev! I agree both of them are great and we’ve seen Kokoreva dance the act 3 PDD and she was quite charming in it! Krysanova and Lantratov are always electric in DQ so I’m jealous of the audience that night!!

“I know you dislike ratmansky, but I think his neoclassical ballets are not THAT bad (not his reconstructions). Especially his RnJ, we all love Grigorovich’s more but I think one review perfectly encapsulated why people tend to prefer Grigorovich but are still v moved by Ratmansky’s version: “Grigorovich’s is made for the Bolshoi stage and Ratmansky’s for the big screen”. Looking back, I agree. The leads in the broadcast are breathtakingly amazing but Grigorovich’s general production is better”

The only one of his neoclassical ballets I like any part of is Concerto DSCH and only the adagio. I cannot stand anything else he does and Pierrot Lunaire makes me want to curl in a ball and die. I saw a video of Renata Shakirova, one of my favorites, dance that piece and I couldn’t even finish it because it’s so bad. I hate his R&J, it’s just...not enjoyable to me at all. The Bolshoi was going to be bringing it to where I live and normally I would have bought tickets to at least 2 shows, but because it was that piece I only bought one night. I try to watch everything he does, I give it a fair chance, but I can’t even find anything just “meh”, it’s all awful for me. Maybe I just don’t have broad enough or sophisticated enough tastes, but I actively dislike his works.

Klim Efimov is a very very clean dancer, especially with petite allegro. He has beautiful lines and I agree that he is quite elegant. I wouldn’t say he reminds me of Skvortsov, there really isn’t anyone who reminds me of Skvortsov, but I agree that he is very elegant and precise. Men really don’t get that many opportunities at the Bolshoi because one thing that is done well is principal roles generally go to principal men, which is quite respectable in my opinion. I also hope Efimov gets promoted soon, he should be a soloist.

McKenzie is absolutely fucking atrocious, I would say he’s the worst. I don’t know how ABT is going to survive not having any sort of season, I really don’t. I would say the next two are Fateyev (Mariinsky) and Vaziev (Bolshoi). Fateyev is responsible for hires and promotions that are questionable at best and downright awful at worst. Vaziev is also responsible for not great promotions, but his biggest error is getting rid of Grigorovich in favor of the absolute horrific Ratmansky. Being a fan focused on Russian ballet is heartbreaking because at the moment we’re watching our favorite theatres crumbling apart due to horrible management.

The best director, IMO, is Kevin O’Hare of the Royal Ballet. His biggest mistake is not having a Nutcracker season last year, but other than that he’s made some really good choices. I’ve only disagreed with one of his promotions, but I don’t find it awful, just not the best choice. I like some of the contemporary repertoire he’s brought in, but he also is constantly keeping the choreographers that really shaped the Royal in McMillan and Ashton. I’m not the biggest fan of either of them, but they are the backbone of the company’s repertoire and it’s important to keep them in.

i have just finished this episode. under the cut you will find my intensely spoiler-filled thoughts.

i saw this episode was titled Hooli Smokes! which is hilarious and adorable but i was kind of like ‘ehh i don’t ... like i really don’t care about the fate of gavin/hooli’ so i didn’t really think about it but now i’ve just watched it and OH MY GOD IT’S A FANTASTIC TITLE

I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS HOLY FUCKING CHRIST ON A CREAM-CHEESE CRACKER

I SWEAR TO GOD IT TOOK ME LIKE 45 MINUTES TO WATCH THIS EPISODE BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY MOMENTS I WANTED TO PAUSE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT EXACTLY WAS GOING ON (because i’m a stickler / occasionally slow hahaha) IT WAS SO INTENSE

speaking of which i’m a liiittle bit disappointed that (in descending order) dinesh, gilfoyle, and monica (mostly dinesh) weren’t that on board with richard’s decision not to sell..... ............but whatevs it makes sense, it’s a billion dollars lmao fair enough money corrupts etc etc

so at this point richard’s fucked and this is such an intense episode it felt like the intensity of the first couple seasons, like, s2 for example, when there was so much going on all the time and i LOVE IT

jared trying to turn himself into the cops for assaulting richard? wow i. um. yeah look i found that a little touching. ngl. i find it interesting that he ... idk, is he doing it to punish himself or because he thinks he’s a danger to richard? i’m not sure. either way it’s a bit weird. but totally in keeping with jared’s character at this point, i feel.

I LOVED the scene of richard and gavin chatting on the bench! it was just fun! also i did recognise the part where you think gavin’s gonna accept richard’s offer but actually he just says ‘fuck no’ from the season trailer and that’s why i don’t fully enjoy trailers because THEY GIVE STUFF AWAY! thankfully the only thing left from the trailer that i can remember is, IIRC, not something that gives away anything particularly suspenseful. hurray.

that scene with dinesh and gilfoyle chatting about karma just seemed a bit unncessary and not that funny, like, not funny enough to keep in?? but then it became clear at least why they had the interaction with wajeed, bc he came back later...

THE PHONE CALL where he tells richard that gavin swooped in and bought gwart’s company when he heard she had good tech... YOU GO JARED. i mean. yeah he’s being a dick in this. but considering the buddy fucker thing and richard still not actually fucking apologising lmao (i know he has a lot on his plate! but come the fuck on, he had the chance!!) i .. don’t feel that bad for richard. and it’s like, this is the umpteenth time that richard has accidentally (via carelessness) screwed something over and all the other times jared’s not said a single bad thing about him (even with hoolicon, he objected to what they were doing, there was no attack on richard personally) ... so it makes sense and is totally understandable that it all came out now.

honestly i felt a bit vindicated by jared telling richard off, i mean, he deserved it. he did know that gavin’s a monster. and him getting called buddy fucker after relentlessly calling jared that after he was told/asked not to ... yeah.
