ATEEZ: GUERRILLA
It has taken me three days to calm down and form coherent thoughts. This turned out longer than expected so it’s behind a cut. If you haven’t watched the music video, this is your sign from God.
1) Firstly. Who does all the screaming. I want to know. It’s a very important piece of information that I need to know. The laugh is Hongjoong’s but does he also do all the screaming. I need answers, NASA!
2) The Energy. Every single reaction I’ve seen about this song uses the word “energy”. Ateez do what other groups think they’re doing when the genre is hype because I’ve never NOT ONCE seen Ateez slack off. They leave blood and sweat on the floor for their rivals to slip on. When I first heard the song I thought my heart was just pounding from the excitement but my oximeter said I was actually having a near svt episode, lol. I shouldn’t laugh, it’s kind of unpleasant but HR 120 bpm? Yeah, only Ateez tbh.
3) Production Quality. I’d like to thank the Academy and KQ for the increase in budget for the MV because it really shows. They used it in a way that wasn’t an empty flex (expensive clothes, meaningless sets, fireworks) but rather, added to the world they’ve been building up since debut. You can see the narrative continue and I really appreciate that. The audio production on the song is just flaw free for me. I usually have so much to nitpick, even in good songs, but I have nothing else to add to Guerrilla. It must have so many layers and tracks to it but it was quiet when it needed to be and absolutely feral at the right parts. What a way to end a track. It didn’t fade out but exploded like a grenade. You can’t ever say that Ateez don’t commit to a concept in every single sense. You’ve heard of Ugly Crying, well Ateez Ugly Hype and have never been afraid to do that.
3) War Aesthetics. Okay bitch, listen, the creative team really stepped up 800% here for this era and this MV. There are so many warfare references in those 4 minutes that it makes my mind exhausted just thinking of the planning that went into all this. The speaker-bombs were fucking inspired. The use of zeppelins immediately remind me of war, particularly WW1, and an alternative steampunk reality. This part of the MV, which is a piece of art tbh, has got to be a homage to ‘Raising the flag on Iwo Jima’ during WW2 as well as Banksy’s Rage, The Flower Thrower piece in Jerusalem. I think that part of the MV was deliberately in slow motion because the inspiration came from still images. They make very clear statements about war and anti-war sentiments. Without boring you all, the last thing I wanted to mention is the font and colours used for the choreo scenes looks straight from vintage propaganda media. I could keep going but this post is already way too long.
4) Metal/Rock Aesthetics. That band room? With all the cables and amps? The mics? The spy cameras? The tv monitors? The fisheye lens? You can tell the team has watched a billion 1990s music videos. It also reminded me a lot of American Idiot. That’s all I wanted to say about that. There’s just a lot of influence in those shots.
5) Screamo in KPOP?! The way it was incorporated was really well done because it’s not prominent enough to scare away the more sensitive casual listener but it was definitely prominent enough for metal fans to have a crisis. We talk about Cultural Reset-This and Cultural Reset-That but nobody has produced a track like Guerrilla before. Nobody. This is one of those times where you can use hyperbole and be right. Nobody has made a song like this and there is no other song like this in KPOP right now. Respect to the Ateez team and the members for their total commitment because they operate like one big breathing organism and that’s why everything feels cohesive. I’ve been waiting 84 years for this. I hope we get to see it with a band one day.
6) Kim Hongjoong. I don’t know if it’s true or not but I feel his influence all over this. This is HIS era and the style/genre suits him the best. I know he likes Linkin Park and at the very least, this style of music, but I do wonder how much he was able to dictate the Ateez sound and direction. Guerrilla is so good and fed me so well that even if they never do this style again, I’m actually fine with that.
7) Literally. I just think it’s so amusing how literal this whole song/mv is. There’s just no “hidden meanings” or subtleties here. I’m not sure Ateez can even do subtle. Even their soft material is aggressively emotive. Haha.
8) People sometimes wonder why I only write long reviews about Ateez music but it’s because they always give me meat to sink my teeth into. Answer is still my Top 3 favourite kpop songs of ALL TIME. There’s just always so much to talk about and it doesn’t even hinge on how hot the members are. You know a group is Legit Good when visual appeal isn’t the first thing I want to talk about. We’re so lucky to live in the Ateez Era.

Another Fic Rec List - various pairings
It’s time for another fic rec list, folks.
Immortal Husbands (Nicky/Joe from The Old Guard)
I’m pretty much obsessed with this ship and specially with their background history, and these are the getting together fics that we all love & deserve.
Waiting by domini_moonbeam, 12k, rated E
Summary:  After a beat, Nicolo’s head bobbing in a tired nod. Yusuf patted his back, giving him a little shove toward the water. “Don’t drown! I don’t want to go in after you,” he said, backing away. Nicolo paused, glancing back at him, eyebrow raised and face painted in blood. There was a question there, in those incredible, expressive eyes—another question Nicolo would not say out loud. “And I would,” Yusuf answered this time. “I would go in after you. I would become a spirit of this forest, haunting that river until I found you.”
fearfully and wonderfully made by bethecowboy, 9k, rated E
Summary: Over the past few years, he’s started sleeping as little as he possibly can without dying — his under-eyes are permanently bruised and he spends daytimes hallucinating. It’s better than dwelling on what has come before: screams, limp bodies, spraying blood, blue eyes.
deo volente (lux aeterna) by qqueenofhades, 65k, rated M
Summary: Yusuf snorts, as if to say it’s mutual. But the Italian struggles to sit upright, wincing and swearing, and – Yusuf cannot pretend he does not want to know, not when a creature will always seek out its like, its matched half as the Greek philosopher Plato wrote, and there is nobody else in the world, to the best of his knowledge, like the two of them. He says, “What’s your name?”There’s a very long pause. He can hear the other man deciding whether to lie. But there is no purpose to it, except for bitterness, and the answer is uttered cold and shortly. “Nicolò.”
(Or: The inevitable backstory.)
Bonus:
Half In Love with Easeful Death by merle_p, 4k, rated M
Summary: “They are quite the sight, aren’t they?” Adrienne says, sitting down next to him on the log by the fire, offering him the eau de vie once more.“What are you talking about?” he says, feeling caught out. The bottle is half-empty already, and he does his part by taking a long drink so he doesn’t have to look at her for a while.“Those two,” she says, pointing her chin at Nicolas and Joseph, who are huddled together with their backs against the wide trunk of an ancient olive tree. “You were staring.”
(In which Booker is new to immortality, and trying to make sense of Nicky and Joe's love. Andy isn't exactly helping. Or maybe she is.)
Destiel (Time Travel and Future Fics)
Crazy Diamonds by pantheon_of_discord, 25k, rated E
Summary: A week ago, Dean was pulled out of Hell. Now, he’s apparently woken up in 2018, and the angel that a mere twenty-four hours beforehand had threatened to chuck him back into the pit is sleepily pouring himself coffee and wearing Dean’s second-favourite Zeppelin shirt. It all seems like a perfect happy ending, but with Hell’s scars still so fresh, Dean can’t imagine how he could have possibly gotten there.
At the same time, the Dean who went to sleep in the bunker, right next to Cas, wakes up on Bobby’s couch in 2008. He’s instantly bombarded with questions by a Lilith-obsessed brother and a man who’s been dead for years, and must decide between keeping his finally-perfect life intact, and the lives he could save by re-writing history.
Regardless of these choices, both Deans are trapped in the wrong decade, and their only way back lies with a Castiel still very much under Heaven’s thumb – one who might find the future Dean describes difficult to believe.
where the weeds take root by deathbanjo, 30k, rated E
Summary:  “Are you happy? Y’know. Just—being here,” Dean says, gesturing to the yard with his beer bottle. “Being with—I mean, you used to fight in celestial wars and—and save the world. Now you’re growing vegetables and talking about chickens.”
The Mirror by cloudyjenn, 25k, rated M
Summary: When Dean touches a strange mirror, he's whisked away to one alternate reality after another and it doesn't take him long to realize the universe is trying to tell him something.
The Story of You and Me by the_diggler, 55k, rated E
Summary: Dean wakes up in bed next to a very human Castiel, and a journal in his own handwriting that tells him it’s two years in the future. The house looks a lot like Bobby’s, and Sam lives there too… He just can’t remember how they got from angels falling in the sky – to comfortable domesticity.
While there is much in the journal Dean doesn’t remember, there is much of their story he’s always known. And as he settles into the routine of his new life and relationship with Castiel, it quickly becomes something he doesn’t know how to live without.
Stucky (Just Some of my Random Faves)
That Reflection Man by SkyisGray, 30k, rated E
Summary:  Political AU - Steve is the son of a Governor and the grandson of a Vice President. At 18, he meets Bucky. At 24, he marries someone else. At 25, he's elected to the House of Representatives, and Bucky overdoses. But their story is really just getting started.
Ain't No Grave (Can Keep My Body Down) by spitandvinegar, 107k, rated M
Summary: It's six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.
For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don't. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It's very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.
I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.
Steve sits down hard on the steps.
Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film by eleveninches, febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, tigrrmilk, 10k, rated G
Summary: Heil Hydra,” the enemy agent shouts.
“Heil this, motherfucker,” says Captain America, shooting off a rocket.
Steve and Bucky find out Hollywood has been busy since they went away. A historical survey, including but not limited to: one set of exploded genitals, a brief interlude in France, Mel Gibson and other masterworks of casting, eight Academy awards, several dinosaurs, and something Tony Stark has ominously dubbed “the masterpiece.” Art included.
Relax by ShowMeAHero, 1,3k, rated G
Summary:  Bucky remembers a detail of his past over breakfast, and nobody can handle it.

1. in my time of dying, led zeppelin
tbh, i just kind of wanted some zep on this playlist. it’s a variation on traditional gospel music (and one of the many traditionally black songs that led zeppelin popularized simply by being white.... but i digress :^) ) and as it’s about being on your deathbed, it’s quite fitting. the first lines of the song were also a tempting highlight -- “in my time of dying, don’t want nobody to mourn” -- but i settled on the lines immediately following. i deliberated between the studio recording and the 2007 O2 arena live performance, but went with studio instead. (kinda because the '07 version is better in its context) (those ‘oh my jesus’es........ oh my jesus.) also, “oh gabriel, let me blow your horn” is a line that exists in this song.
ten years gone was also in the running, which is funny bc physical graffiti is far from my fave album of theirs. when the levee breaks was kinda tempting too purely for the soundscape, and thank you is always a good cute song too.
2. dear death, pt. i, emery
this is an “old song” for me, but i still really like it. part ii also exists, and the two sound great back-to-back, but pt. i was just much more fitting for these two. the opening lines (again, immediately prior to those i highlighted.... a trend?) are “just hear me out, this was all my fault” going right into “you brought me death,” which is just. i had to. you know? this song is so short, but absolutely every line is packed with that good r76 trademark angst tee em.
3. love is blindness, jack white
ha, ha, blind!76 headcanon pun, plus the general blind-to-you theme. another tempting highlight was “love is blindness / i don’t wanna see / won’t you wrap the night around me” which gives me both “willfully blind” vibes and “i want you to hide me from everything” vibes, and a bit of that “i’m too tired to be able to Care anymore, i want it all to be gone” feeling. just all in all, a good ol’ kinda fucked up song.
4. madness, muse
this is one of those songs that occurred to me out of the damn blue but ohhhh boy does it ever fit. alt. highlights again: “but now i have finally seen the end / and i’m not expecting you to care / but i have finally seen the light / i have finally realized / i need your love” -- if we want to get real meta it’s about saying “you know what, fuck that” to the aforementioned willful blindness. also a big fuck-you to their past situation; a kind of “i know shit was fucked before because of me, and i’m not expecting to snap my fingers and things are magically fine, but i’ve gotten some perspective.”
5. lilac wine, jeff buckley
more songs about mourning! hooray! this song is just so damn beautiful and sorrowful and i love it a lot on its own, so it’s happy coincidence more than anything that made it suitable for this playlist. i also love the lines “makes me see what i want to see / and be what i want to be / when i think more than i want to think / do things i never should do” -- grief and shock and all that good shit snowballing into real mf bad decisions.
6. adieu, enter shikari
another old song for me! i really, really love this song, though. it’s lovely and it’s also fun to belt out while driving. one of those soft songs that you can really just shout out. also about loss! “i cherish my loss / a gentle reminder / that life is unkind / at the best of times” is probably actually my favorite stanza in the song. i love the idea of cherishing a loss because that’s not what we usually do with loss (quite the opposite), and of loss being... idk, not so much a centralizing force, but a fixed point in terms of perspective? it’s such a weird way to think about things, but i really love it. this song is also fun because it’s very different from all of enter shikari’s other music, lmao.
7. waiting for the end, linkin park
here it is, folks. The Title Song. i’m going to detour for a bit to mention that this entire album works eerily well as a general fall of overwatch album; it’s a concept album about war and destruction and loss, but it’s very hopeful, and kind of a rallying-cry album. honestly probably my favorite linkin park album (i have a favorite linkin park album. embarrassing.), and one of my favorite albums In General. great fun to listen to while driving, actually, which is kind of what sparked this whole fic -- i drove to LA for an event four fucking days in a row (~2hr drive for me lmfao.... god) and i listened to this a few times while driving, and on top of that, a (great) conversation i had at this event is the reason i’m writing this fic using twine, so by our powers combined, etc. etc.
runners-up for the one (1) linkin park slot i allowed myself for this fanmix include: P5hng Me A*wy (or this version), iridescent, roads untraveled (which i staunchly maintain should be one of The universal otp songs)
anyways, i just. love this song. so much. it’s such a good look at how it feels when something goes wrong between two people and the entire stanza i highlighted is just! such a great way to talk about how it feels when you’re stuck between “holding on to what i haven’t got” and knowing you need to move forward; “i know what it takes to move on / i know how it feels to lie / all i want to do / is trade this life for something new.”
8. the anchor, bastille
another detour to talk about the album :V i don’t know if i associate wild world with r76 because i started playing a lot of overwatch around the time i bought this album, or if it really is A Very R76 Album, but it’s. a very r76 album. it was actually really hard to pick just one song off this album to put on this playlist; good grief, glory, two evils, fake it, and shame were also up there, and i deliberated between this and good grief for a while, but in the end, this won out. it’s another good and soft song in terms of words. laughter lines was also tempting.
general aside: i also debated on having i want you (she’s so heavy) by the beatles on this playlist because i love the sound of that song so much, and also because the across the universe version of the song is quite applicable when it comes to overwatch as a war story.

Where the Wild Things Are
I know the premise of this episode, and that means I need to give some background on me. Hello, I’m Tia. I’m a 35-year-old transgender woman from the Deep South. I didn’t realize I was trans until my late 20s, but… well, that’s a story for if I blog something about the nature of gender. What’s a story for now is that, when I wasn’t quite a preteen, my parents converted from “nonpracticing conservative-but-vague Christian” to “hardcore fundamentalist Church of Christ Christian.” My mother, who had introduced me to Asimov and Tolkien and Hawking and Baum and to Meat Loaf and Led Zeppelin and these great, beautiful, PASSIONATE works of television (Star Trek!) and cinema and music and literature eliminated all of that from her life and replaced it, over time, with Bible readings and Carmen and goddamn Veggie Tales and did I mention Carmen? And my father, who’d ecouraged me to learn as much as possible even if he didn’t understand what I was learning, who brought me the Stones and Dylan and protest and war and gotten me my very first computer - a real PC clone! - when nobody else I knew had one because that was the future… he closed off to new information, to the world as a whole. I refused to homeschool even though I was badly bullied because I knew that school would keep me a link to the world. I played their sympathy to study astrophysics over the summer, and learned there to measure the distance to the stars and to see that the universe was far older than my preacher said it was. I was hit. Not as often as some others I knew. What my father did to me would not, under legal definitions, count as child abuse. What he did to my brother, who was far more obedient to what he wanted his children to be but far less able to play the part when he was disobedient, who couldn’t keep his mouth closed to keep himself safe, and who was younger and smaller… that might have. Probably did. But what he did to me still shaped me. The things I heard spoken from that pulpit changed me more, I think. I spent so long being taught the fear of God that it took moving away from faith and wandering through a dozen different belief systems before I could see the wonder of God. This is a story about spirits trapped by fundamentalist Christian abuse and possession. I don’t know how much the nature of that abuse is going to be relevant to what actually happens in the episode, but I think it’s important to know the context I come at this topic from. The author, they say, is dead - what the author intended to say with a work is far less important than what the reader or viewer takes from it - and the reader, the viewer, is very much alive, and comes to everything they read and watch with the context of the life they’ve lived hovering around them. Those are the glasses through which we see our entertainment. With that out of the way… we watch. 1. Previously On gives us a reminder of the romantic relationships so far in the show - Buffy/Riley, Anya/Xander, Willow/Tara. Then we get Buffy and Riley fighting a vampire and a demon. “You get Fang, I’ll get Horny.” Heh. Demon is dead. Vampire is staked. That was a workout. Vampires and demons don’t ever work together, except all the times we’ve seen them do so. But I think Buffy and Riley are going to have sex instead of telling Giles. Yep. . 2. We’re in a house. Is it the frat house? It is. Buffy and Riley are asleep in Riley’s room. Remind me to talk about the Kuzuis at some point - that’s a fascinating story of how the TV industry works. Riley heard a noise… dripping. Creepy music. He’s in the bathroom. His room doesn’t have its own. There’s a leaky faucet. He turned it off. We cut to an ice cream truck in a residential neighborhood. It’s Xander and Anya. Xander wants to go to a party at the frat house, but Anya is worried because the Initiative is there and she used to be a demon. Also, she thinks Xander doesn’t find her attractive because they didn’t have sex last night, which is the third time that’s happened. “I don’t understand. I’m pretty. I’m young. Why didn’t you take advantage of me?” And there are children outside the truck. Xander is very, very fired. 3. Buffy and Riley are talking about the demon and vampire. They think Adam did it, because duh. Giles wants them to see if they find any more odd pairings. Riley speaks Giles’s language when explaining the party, but Giles is going to the Expresso Pump for a meeting of grown-ups that will be of no interest to any of his friends. Buffy can’t keep her hand off of Riley. They’re going off for a quickie before Buffy’s class. 4. Sun’s down and it’s party time, I think. But Buffy and Riley are still having sex. They’re getting yet another condom. Building is unnaturally cold, but that doesn’t seem to be bothering Buffy and Riley. The fireplace just exploded and set an Initiative guy on fire. 5. Spike is trying to rob Anya, but she’s not afraid of him. Looks like the party’s still on even after someone being on fire. Buffy and Riley are at the party. The guy who got burned just lost his eyebrows. Willow and Tara and Xander are there. Buffy keeps staring at Riley and doesn’t hear anything anyone is saying. Anya, meanwhile, is hanging out with Spike. She’s commiserating. They’re both not scary demons any more, and everything is complicated. Love always ends badly. “I’ve seen a thousand relationships. First there’s the love and the sex, then there’s nothing left but the vengeance.” Spike suggested that they do vengeance together… Anya eviscerate Xander, Spike stakes Drusilla. Sounds like a lovely bonding moment. They’re not going to do it, though. 6. Now we get to watch painful minor character flirting. Yay? And one of the minor characters just had an orgasm while standing there and talking to the other. Three orgasms. Xander is talking to a girl. And flirting. He’s going to get eviscerated. So eviscerated. Buffy, meanwhile, wants to go have sex with Riley. The wall is making people have orgasms. Willow is with Tara and talking and they keep staring at each other. Tara loves to ride horses and invited Willow to go with her. Willow tried to touch Tara’s shoulder but Tara was suddenly disgusted. Tara look terrified and ran off to the bathroom. And Spike’s there with Anya. Xander feels all jealous, but Spike shut him up. Spike needs a drink. Anya and Xander fight hilariously. Xander found people playing Spin the Bottle. One is the girl he was flrting with earlier; she invited him to play. 7. Spike is drinking with an Initiative gut. The guy didn’t recognize him, but knows he looks familiar. Xander spun the bottle and it pointed at the girl from earlier. They’re going to kiss. Wow, she’s fairly aggressive with it. Now she’s horrified by what she just did and running away. Xander found the orgasm wall. And someone sobbing in a closet. It’s Julie, cutting her hair off. Willow is trying to find Tara. She went to the bathroom, where she washed her face then heard something from the bathtub. She’s checking it out. One of the guys… no, a ghost. Under the water. Drowning. Now he’s behind her. 8. Riley and Buffy heard Willow scream but aren’t getting up. Willow is searching for Xander and Willow. Found them both. Tara doesn’t like the house because it’s haunted. And now the bottle’s gone mad and exploded and seriously injured someone. They’re going to get Buffy. But Riley’s door just grew a tree that’ll keep them from getting in, and Buffy and Riley are still having sex. In… space? That’s a really long zoom-out shot of their bed. 9. Tara just walked away from the door, and there’s an earthquake. Tara’s on a balcony. The quake is emptying the room, but got strong enough that everybody fell down. And Spike’s strapped to a chair.Graham is possessed by a Fundamentalist spirit that’s preaching to Forrest. Forrest is getting him down to the Initiative, though. Anya’s still in the building and a screaming ghost just ran through her. And the quake is starting again. 10. Spike is trying to break loose of his chair, and Xander got Julie out. She’s mostly bald now. Forrest and Graham are locking the Initiative down. Xander and Spike are going to back inside… well, Spike talked himself out of it, so Xander’s going back in. And got thrown out by a spirit. “Or… it could get Watcher time.” 11. Giles is singing. “Behind Blue Eyes.” With an acoustic guitar. He’s… really good. Xander is creeped out, though. He wants to go back to the haunted house. Giles saw them, but is finishing his song. Willow once had a crush on him, and Anya is staring. Hard. Very hard. 12. Now the tree from Riley’s room has taken over the house, and Buffy and Riley are still having sex. 13. “In the midst of all that, did you really think they were keeping it up?” *awkward silence* “Oh, for a different phrasing.” THAT is writing. 14. Now we learn the backstory of the dorm. It was a house for disadvantaged children and adolescents run by Genevieve Holt. She’s still alive, so they’re going to visit her. “I treated them as if they were my own flesh and blood… gave them hugs and praise when they were good, and punished them when they were dirty.” Oh god, Anya’s face here. 15. Nitpick: I’m watching this with Netflix’s subtitles on so I can get all the dialogue. Netflix’s subtitles for the show miss out on a lot of capitalizations - they never capitalize Slayer, for example. Calling. Things like that. Here, they missed one that’s really important for the cultural context of the story. “Without me, they would have been shut out of the Kingdom.” They didn’t capitalize Kingdom. In Christian writing, you capitalize that when you’re talking about Heaven. 16. Anya’s face here. This is a woman who has committed incredible, often disproportionate, acts of cruelty. Who delighted in it. And listening to this woman describe what she did to children has her utterly disgusted. I think, even if I didn’t know this thing happens, even if I didn’t see the hints of it in my own youth… holy fuck, Emma Caufield, you are amazing here. Head and Brendon are also doing a good job, but wow. It’s Anya’s scene, and it’s almost all in her face, and she’s incredible. 17. The house isn’t haunted by actual ghosts - it’s haunted by the energy of what Holt did to the children there. Intense emotion, pain, sexual energy and repression. The poltergeists are draining Buffy and Riley’s life energy through the sex they’re having, while influencing them to have more sex. 18. Willow, Tara, and Giles are going to bind the spirits long enough for Xander and Anya to get Riley and Buffy out. Anya can sense the haunting, which is a neat talent. Willow and Giles and Tara have called the spirits to Tara’s room, so Xander and Anya really should be going in. Which they’re doing. The tree’s taken over - good thing Xander brought a machete. Wind kicked up when Xander tried to open the door. The spirits threw Tara’s table across the room, and they lost the spirits. Xander got dragged into the bathroom and Anya thrown off the balcony. Xander’s being drowned now. Anya’s up, and the spirits are screaming. She’s going up the stairs… her ankle’s hurt. Her hand got impaled by the tree but she’s tough as all fuck and got Xander out of the tub. Tree’s still attacking them as they head for Riley’s room. They're through the door, and just opened it. The tree’s gone and the house is safe. 19. The last scene was all right and wrapped things up. Overall: Emma Caufield. Anya makes this whole thing work. From the moment she’s having drinks with Spike, this is her episode, and she nails it hard. Seriously, she’s utterly brilliant here. Particularly in her scene at Holt’s house and in the frat house with the tree attacking them… she’s just wonderful. I’m not really sure what to say about the rest of the episode. Fundamentalist sexual repression is incredibly harmful, leaving those subject to it with both serious issues surrounding sex and badly incomplete information about it. That’s deliberate - Fundamentalist Christianity is the Christianity of judgement, or punishment for “sin.” In a world where suffering can leave an impression on a place, certainly that - plus decades of intense physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse of children - would do so. This episode is very triggery. But it’s also worthwhile, because it’s the first real time the writers have given a story to Anya to tell, and good God does she nail it.

Hey kids – Paul Bernardo here and this week was quite eventful with the Emmys and a lot more tidbits to share. Join me here every week for the good news in entertainment.
END OF THE DARK CRYSTAL
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been cancelled by Netflix after only a single season.
“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” said Lisa Henson, executive producer. “We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future. Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling. Our history also includes productions that are enduring, often finding and growing their audience over time and proving again and again that fantasy and science fiction genres reflect eternal messages and truths that are always relevant. We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realize this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on Age of Resistance, and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics and our peers, most recently receiving an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program.”
In other words, Lisa Henson is saying – “I suck, I’m nowhere near as good as my brother Brian Henson, and he sucks too. Sorry”
Yes I saw the show, and yes I hated it. It had no heart and no joy and felt like a big money machine turning about. Nothing about it was interesting, even though the puppets looked exactly like the movie, as did Augra and the sets, but that’s about all it had in common with Jim Henson’s vision.
Once again, either it’s Disney or Henson’s family – they are trying to duplicate the magic of Henson without having a clue what his work was about or what it stood for. Like i said about Star Wars, it’s amazing how many people can get it wrong.
SCHITT’S CREEK IS MOVING
Pop TV belongs to the family of ViacomCBS, and so ViacomCBS is going to air the program on the more visible sister channel, Comedy Central. After it’s historic sweep at the Emmy’s, Schitt’s Creek is moving on up to take it’s bow in the limelight.
EMMY WINNERS
Ok, so viewership of the Emmy’s was down this year – it’s the year of Covid – nobody showed up, what did you expect? Anyway it’s not about viewership points – it’s about Schitt’s Creek – sweeping their category and winning 9 Emmy’s, the most ever for a comedy series. The show does have two legends at the helm who have been at it for a very long time and are amazing collaborators. Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy have been winning awards and making people laugh since the day TV was invented. Eugene’s son Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy round out the winners along with best writing, best casting, best costumes, best directing and maybe a few more.
John Candy was a big fan and collaborator with Eugene and I sure wish he were alive to see this amazing triumph from his best friend. Still breaks my heart that big kahuna is gone.
Anyway – HBO wins 30, Netflix 21, Apple TV gets 2 as does Quibi, so that’s embarrassing. Adult Swim gets 4, NBC 8, Disney+ 8, ABC 5, CBS 2. No big surprises, except CBS getting 2, that’s kind of really bad.
Euphoria gets 3 wins, Watchmen 11, Succession 7, Mandalorian 6. SNL 6, Last Week Tonight, 4.  No Bill Mahr, and he is slipping for sure. I thought Mandalorian would get more since it has revolutionized how tv is shot and made with it’s 3D movie studio – but maybe next year people will realize what it’s done. It’s so good it’s like Led Zeppelin, people really aren’t ready to embrace it or understand it yet.
Eddie Murphy won an Emmy for hosting SNL after 30 years of being away. That’s more like a “please come back again” nod from the industry. I am proud of Euphoria because it took so many chances and pulled off all those risks very well with maturity and artistry and honesty. I am glad the show got rewarded for it.
Watchmen was a huge undertaking by HBO. The movie by Zack Snyder was put under a microscope since the comic book is so dearly loved. Honestly, HBO put a huge amount of thought into it, the story was amazing, and heavy hitting as we expect from such a wealth of profound and heavy material.
Regina King was sublime in it, as was Jeffrey Irons and the rest of the cast. I loved everything about it from the costumes to the plot to the dialogue to how everything unfolded brilliantly until the very end. On one hand you hope it continues – but on the other hand the ending was so good- you kind of don’t want it to continue.
RuPaul’s Drag Race won again, 6 times. I think this is the fifth year Rupaul won an Emmy for his show. I mean, the category is reality competition shows – so the bar is not exactly set high, but still – glad he continues on his winning streak.
This year snubs really weren’t snubs for me – they were just series that were long in the tooth and have had their time. Curb Your Enthusiasm just didn’t work in the Trump Era – already too much hate in the world to find Larry David funny right now. Ms. Maisel was shut out, she had her time in the sun when streaming platforms were new and exciting. Dead To Me, Kominsky Method, What We Do In The Shadows and The Good Place were also all shut out. Again, they all had their day and now with so much material coming out at such a face pace, they were just simply yesterday’s news.
PRE-GoT NEWS!!
During this Emmy thing – we got some news about the prequel to GoT!! It is called House of the Dragon, and casting is underway. That’s it – but isn’t that enough?! Let’s hope they don’t botch this one up!!
The Hulk Wins An Emmy!
Mark Ruffalo won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie with his role in I Know This Much is True which aired on HBO. He played two roles, brothers Dominick Birdsey and Thomas Birdsey. Mark gave them subtle but very noticeable differences and played them both brilliantly. Another actor in this show that I thought was fantastic was Rosie O’Donnell who played their social worker. Rosie brought a pain and a seriousness to a role that rivaled Mark’s characters. She was amazing and I just wish she got recognized somehow for doing an amazing job in a tough role, in a very serious and tragic series.
MICHAEL JORDAN SHOOTS AND SCORES!
Michael Jordan wins his very first Emmy with the amazing documentary The Last Dance. Jordan beat out The Tiger King to win Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. Tiger King was extremely popular, even had actors begging on Twitter to be cast in it, but Jordan as always, wins out.
Jordan has always had a thing with winning, and what he accomplished in the NBA is unmatched, unparalleled and simply historic. 6 Championships, taking a year off to go play baseball, then come back, get back into shape, and win some more rings. Players feared Jordan, even in practice, if you did not give it your all, he would hound you and make your life miserable. Jordan and his talent, his motivation and his desire to win and pull a team up to join him, may never be seen in sport again, let alone in the NBA.
What that man did has never been done before or since. You can do a series on Magic, Larry, Bill Russell, Iverson, Kobe, anybody – and Jordan’s story, will to win, and accomplishments will continue to reign above them all, just like he did on the court.
Thanks for reading – see ya next Thursday!
