i really do wish there was more direct character to character interactions in cotl, like you rarely see anything other than characters talking to lamb or sometimes mentioning another character. but rarely interacting with each other outside of followers. only one i can think of is this thing with the lighthouse keeper meeting the mushroomos. what is he doing in anura anyhow.

RIGHT I'm such a sucker for character interaction it's the one thing I crave more than anything in the world and COTL gives us a whole lot of. None of it It's why all the things I'm tempted to write would be like 90% character interaction. I want the bishops to INTERACT AT ALL as cult members (beyond random chance follower stuff), I want Ratoo and Ratau to catch up on each other's lives, I want the knucklebones gang to talk and bicker amongst themselves. I want Midas to steal from someone random. I want Plimbo and the Fisherman to talk to each other because I don't know they have each other's vibes.

But at the very least YEAH, we have that one super random interaction between the lighthouse keeper and the Mushroomos. Which comes out of nowhere and adds very little other then to maybe further imply to me that the Mushroomo's existence is considered odd. And that even tho the Mushroomos are quite nervous around the Lamb and Sozo they will go "HEY... That was mean :(" when insulted hsdgkshdg

as for the Wiki yeah I've learned it's pretty unreliable? Well. Not completely, but dialogue is indeed missing from it -- I realized that when I had these encounters in Anura and ALSO snapped a picture of it because I was like HEY WAIT A SECOND THESE WEREN'T IN THE WIKI!!!!!

Regardlesss!!!! yes....... if there's any more big updates in the future I hope it's just a bunch of character interaction . massive monster I'm looking at you with super wide eyes . You want the characters to Exchange Dialogue so fucking bad I know you do come on give it to us

the album that really got me into prog is Hope (1977) by Klaatu. palatable pop rock infused with incredible progressive and symphonic elements. Long Live Politzania is a 9 minute song that alternates between rocking rock and epic orchestral stuff. Prelude is entirely orchestral and it's fantastic. So Said the Lighthouse Keeper!!!!!!! is my favorite song on the album i think!! it alternates between this really awesome heavy sound and this really beautiful light sound and it is so perfect. and then the wonderful title track closes off the album and it gives me chills every time. gorgeous. wonderful album that really juggles so much in 8 songs, each of which are important to the album, no filler. in my biased opinion.

then another album i really love is Whatevershebringswesing (1972) by Kevin Ayers!! Kevin was a member of Soft Machine, which you'll get to know if you get more into prog assuming you dont already. he left and made awesome music. this album juggles even more than Hope. there are 8 songs and basically 6 different styles of song. epic orchestral opener, beautiful margaret, dixieland song, weird experimental song, gorgeous mellow 8 minute title track with an awesome guitar solo by Mike Oldfield, the guy who made tubular bells, which was licensed for the Exorcist main theme. wonderful album.

another classic in pop prog is Crime of the Century (1974) by Supertramp. not much to say about this one but basically every song hits, but in particular i love School, Bloody Well Right, Asylum, If Everyone was Listening, and the title track. very notably British album, too. kindof fun in that way.

This might be controversial but im gonna also put We're Only In It For The Money (1968) by Frank Zappa. zap fucking hated the beatles (based) and made a whole album lampooning them, made evident by the cover of the album which is a recreation of the sgt pepper cover. 19 songs over 39 minutes so it has kind of a fast pace to it. i honestly cant pick out any specific songs because it goes so fast like that, except for Lonely Little Girl and Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance. TYCOWYD is only a minute and a half, VERY goofy, gives the vibe for the whole album. I do recommend skipping the last song if it doesnt do anything for you. it is not very good, which is by design, so good job to frank.

Foxtrot (1972) by Genesis is a must. It is a powerhouse of prog, widely revered for Watcher of the Skies and the 23 minute epic Supper's Ready. And personally I really love Get Em Out By Friday, that song has such an unmatched energy, one of my favorite Genesis songs

oh boy oh boy!!

well the easy listening tracks that everyone seems to like are the songs Refugees (not indicative of most of their catalogue) and Killer (kind of more like what they usually do but not entirely), though i, knowing the rest of their music, dont particularly like either song or find either to be particularly "good" considering what vdgg is capable of, but for someone dipping their tooties into vdgg i do recommend starting there.

if you like their general sound, there are two great instrumentals i highly recommend as well: Boleas Panic and Theme One.

if you've made it past those first few songs and think you enjoy them, and if you're a prog fan (idk why you would follow me if youre not a prog fan tbh but i wont kick u out if or nothin if ur not a prog fan) and you dont mind a 20 minute long epic, go for A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (the epic) and then Darkness 11/11 (proggy and weird). Darkness 11/11 is a seriously incredible song because its. so. weird. i have never heard another song like it. if you like prog it is a must-listen.

the songs i me personally consider their best are Arrow, Pilgrims, Childlike Faith, La Rossa, and Man-Erg. so if you get past allll the ones previously mentioned, try Arrow maybe. its my boyfriend! you can also start out with Arrow if you think you can take a good progging right out of the gate.

if you're looking for full albums, though (this is how i usually get into bands), The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other is a good one to start with. if you like that one and would like something a little spicier, go to Pawn Hearts from there, and if you like THAT, go to Still Life.

so, a slight new development-

I've been fiddling with some side characters in the mortally coiled universe that don't fit in any of the four major cycles. while I considered the idea of adding a new cycle for one or two of these, I really REALLY don't want to screw up the numbering (four being a very significant number in mc)

so I've settled on the concept of a half-cycle/partial cycle/sidecar cycle (as you can probably tell I haven't settled on a name yet) that take place during and/or between the major cycles and don't contain any of the through lines the other cycles have (ie sleep-no-longer appears in every cycle, each cycle focusing on crossing an uncrossable line, null is there, etc)

the ones I have so far (a lot of these are characters/storylines I originally planned on being part of a main cycle but decided to make them their Own Thing)

-Garte, aquuid lighthouse keeper and former shop captain is harassed (and eventually befriended) by Moonshine (sundog of drowning)

-Pedal is sent by Lythe to figure out what the FUCK is going on with boghast and crew. Meets Roupgaruke and abandons their duty to study roup like a bug

-Crux (sundog of power upheaval) and Fean (sundog of animal attacks) misadventures of being bad at their jobs

-random guy finds a spot where the metaphysical barrier between the mortal and eternal coils are "thinner" and befriends someone from the eternal coil OTHER than the three that created the mortal coil without realizing the significance of this

-mage makes little constructs to do tasks and some of them suck sooooo bad. this one is the least developed but im thinking either they're abandoned and the mage moves onto something else or the mage does fucked up shit and the shitty constructs defect. idk I just want to explore the coil's magic system more and also. what if there was a little guy

Ed and Stede running up lighthouse steps together intent on having a dramatic swordfight there

Only to get like. Almost to the top, out of breath, legs aching a bit (Ed's knee is absolutely bothering him and Stede can tell but Ed is Refusing to admit it rn)

And they end up sitting on the steps there, swords set aside, and having a good long talk abt Everything

They decide to make out at the top of the lighthouse instead

Unfortunately there's no way to relay that to the rest of the crew, all huffing and puffing their way up all those fucking stairs bc what if the captains kill each other?! That leaves Izzy or Olu as potential replacement options (Black Pete also throws his hat in the ring) and now both of them are like eehhhh actually? captaining kinda sucks! Maybe we could draw straws, take turns, lottery system?

Ed and Stede come back down to find them carefully stacked up by each other, sitting on the section of stairs where they stopped 'just for a moment' and ended up falling asleep waiting to see if Ed and/or Stede would come back down first

They'd wake them up, but it's honestly really fucking cute and. fuck. that's not that many stairs to walk down but. surely they could sit with the crew until morning instead

Cut to the morning and the most confused fucking lighthouse keeper who like. maybe got lost or some shit idk, either way he fucked up and left it unattended and now there's a pirate cuddle puddle halfway up the damned thing, and what's the protocol? does he make everyone breakfast before they leave? only seems the polite thing to do but also he could have sworn he locked the fucking door (as if that would actually stop any of them, bc at least one or more of the crew surely knows how to pick a lock like. That's Nothing to them lmao work harder to keep them out or accept the situation)

as far as the original triad goes, the only thing i’m certain of is that the first light keeper is an ancestor of the MCs. i’m intrigued to know the identities of the first path finder and the first guardian, and Arin’s relationship to the first guardian.

when i first considered the idea of FMC being the path finder, i have to admit i didn’t like it since she’d already been established in Ezra’s route as the functional light keeper. as in, the one who bothered to learn how to maintain the lighthouse, how to... literally keep the light on. she reprimands MMC for not paying attention whenever their dad taught them how to repair and maintain it, and she’s the one who diagnoses the issue when it malfunctions during the storm. so it feels remiss to give him the title of “light keeper” when she’s the one who put in the work.

but hey, maybe the MCs are meant to grow into these roles. he could learn to work the lighthouse, and she could figure out her path in life.

in a Doylist sense, the roles could be modeled after their personalities, as Tris suggested. the roles they play for other people.

but

i still think the more likely explanation is that the path finder is a third party.

previously, we knew of only two significant figures: the light keeper and the guardian. for those of us who read Nora's route, it's obvious that the guardian is Arin. we can also make an educated guess about the identity of the light keeper. that could somehow be one or both of the MCs in all routes. if both, they might share the role equally, or one might be the primary and the other the auxiliary.

but introducing a new element like this would be a good way to bring another character into the magic plot. just like how Arin was introduced early but revealed as one of these important figures later, i think the same will go for the path finder. which brings me to...

i did, and still do, consider Darla a contender. she's been getting a lot more focus and depth recently, and as the only character who's not apparently connected to the magic plot yet, this is a way she could be brought in to it.

and yet another possibility i've been entertaining is that the path finder is the LI, and their MC is the light keeper. Nora, Lucas, and Ezra now all have opportunities to lead a life that’s different from the one they had before, in multiple senses; both MCs are notably the person who helps their respective LI adapt to the strange new world in which they’ve found themselves. the title of “path finder” is particularly suited to Lucas, whose entire life has been defined by duty, familial obligation, and the notion of fate. more and more lately, we’ve seen how it restricts and perturbs him. this may be his time to forge his own path.

tl;dr:

there are several probable permutations of this triad:

MMC is the light keeper, and FMC is the path finder.

FMC is the light keeper, and MMC is the path finder.

both MCs are the light keepers, and Darla is the path finder.

both MCs are the light keepers, and the specific route’s LI is the path finder.

there are good arguments to be made for all of them, but i'd go with either of the last two.

...and Arin is the guardian, always. thank goodness there’s at least one constant.

Elizabeth had never hosted a party.  She had been the guest of honor at a few parties her father had thrown for her birthday, and that when she was younger - when she was old enough to host her own parties, her friends had largely moved or married out of Port Royal society.  Too proud to ask either James or Giselle for advice this time on how to adapt Port Royal party customs to a quartet of cool pirates, she decided on several basic necessities: food; drink, both alcoholic and otherwise; some kind of rag in case there was a spill; the potential props in order to play games, but kept out of the way so that no one felt obligated; company (so adieu, Captain Norrington, girls only); and, naturally, rules.  She was explaining that to the first arrivals on the scene. Elizabeth (to whom it may concern): Teasing is tolerated, bullying is not.  If you want to behave like one of the men you can go sit with them if you like.  I will be very clear on this point: if anyone wakes in the morning with something written on her head, so help me God, we will find the culprit and we will dunk her."  [mood shifting out of Pirate King mode] ...But I think that covers it.[Giselle puts her hand up] Giselle: Can we write elsewhere? Angelica: Can we write on the guys if/when they fall asleep? Ana: I was gonna suggest no writing on people without permission but I’m in if we are writing on the guys. Elizabeth: [pointing at Giselle] Excellent question! No. [pointing at Angelica, then Ana] Hang on a minute. What guys are going to be here? Angelica: Not here, on the rest of the ship. Ana: I...I’m so sorry you were treated that way. He can be a complete bastard. Sometimes he even takes pride in it...but I can’t imagine he’s proud of all that. He owes me a debt, at least, is what I say my reason is for going after him. Elizabeth: Then, you know, James showed up in Tortuga and they tried to lynch him.  I put a stop to that, and - more or less, people thought I was getting some... Use out of him.  So yeah. Elizabeth: [back to business] Same as you, pretty much.  We faked it really.  I was only keeping him in my room since I thought somebody might try to finish hanging him if they got him alone. Angelica: So it was a bit of a coincidence, is what you're saying? Elizabeth: A huge one! Imagine if he'd showed up just a little earlier than I did. I'd have been too late. Angelica: Listen, you can't move things too fast if you're not sure about this. Whatever you decide to do, that's one point I cannot stress enough Ana: Sorting through your emotions on your own time, either by yourself or with people you’re comfortable with, doesn’t mean you have to leave James behind, or even go on a break. Elizabeth: Angelica, if i took that advice, I would be on an island in the Caribbean somewhere, starving. With Jack Sparrow. Elizabeth: I've spent the last three years of my life moving too fast. Angelica: Then maybe it's time to calm down a little. Focus on your career or something Elizabeth: But I do care about him. Elizabeth: And it's not Jack that ruined his life, it's me. I did that. Elizabeth: He let Jack go because I stepped in and asked him. Elizabeth: Hell. If I had married him, he might not have chased Jack into a hurricane, either. Elizabeth: I owe him a lot.  And he needs my protection - he worked for Beckett for a year and no one trusts him. Angelica: Sweetie, you can't be in a relationship just because you feel like you owe the guy something. That's not healthy and certainly not fair to him Angelica: With your position I'm sure you can grant him some form of protection, as for what you owe him there are other ways to pay that debt off Elizabeth: [a little stubbornly] It's not the only reason.
