hi, you mentioned modifying lemon orzo pasta w arugula a little while ago, i was wondering if you have a base lemon orzo pasta recipe you could share? no worries if not, have a good weekend!
hi!!! yes its super easy!!! this is my "i have no energy" easy meal. recipe is as follows:
ingredients
- orzo
- lemon juice
- butter
- parmesan cheese
- your green of choice
- your protein of choice (chicken, fish, or plant protein like chickpeas usually go best with lemon. not sure about beans.)
- freshly cracked black pepper (highly prefer over pre-ground)
- garlic powder, onion powder, salt
steps
1. boil a pot of water and cook orzo as instructed on package. i usually cook mine for 7 min
2. drain orzo, return to pot. in the pot, add butter to taste
3. put orzo in bowl. add your green of choice and protein of choice. add seasonings to taste. mix. add lemon juice to taste. stir. add parmesan to taste. stir. add parmesan on top to finish. ta da!!!
4. i usually cook 1 lb orzo (in the states, usually 1 whole bag) and store the leftovers (no seasoning/lemon added, just buttered) in the fridge. whenever i want a bowl, i just microwave a portion and the butter helps keep it from sticking/drying out, and retains flavor. then i add all my ingredients as in #3. this usually gives me about 5 or 6 meals.
as a cost per serving example: (1 lb orzo ~$1, 8 oz smoked salmon (my protein of choice) ~$9, 1/2 bag arugula ~$1, 1/3 container parm ~$1-2)/5 = ~$2.60 per serving, which is pretty lit.
you dont have to do greens or protein, obvs, but i like to for a well-balanced meal and also to help prevent me from feeling bogged down due to carb/butter load. (the greens esp help with this.) i originally made this with spinach as my green, but i much prefer arugula now due to its flavor complimenting the tang of parm and lemon. you could also do this with broccoli, peas, kale.... whatever you prefer. greens + lemon + seasonings is a pretty solid combo.

Fact is, mechanical mowing is nothing at all like grazing in terms of its impacts upon a plant community.
Grazing animals are selective in how they forage, eating plants they find tastier and avoiding plants they don't like. In this way, the power of a highly competitive plant could be nerfed because that plant is yummy and gets eaten more.
Grazing animals also don't graze uniformly over a whole pasture—they have areas they prefer to hang out and areas they hang out in less. This creates a broad range of specific levels of pressure that the plant communities face
Grazing animals chop and churn up soil with their hooves. They jostle seeds loose and bury them in mud. They compact some areas of soil but not uniformly.
Grazing animals poop. Ruminants like cattle, bison, goats, and deer use symbiotic bacteria that live in their guts to digest their food. The bacteria break down the plants into nutrients. When the animal defecates, it provides a feast of nutrients and moisture for plants and insects.
Finally, grazing animals are significantly slower and less violent than lawn mowers, and thus less likely to run over critters and shred them to bits.
I doubt it would be possible to comprehensively measure how many insects get shredded to bits by lawn mowers, or what impact this has on the overall population, but running a Creature-Shredding Machine regularly over your entire yard can't be good for them. You're chopping up a lot of caterpillars and other flightless larval forms of bugs, which birds need a LOT of in spring to feed to baby birds, among literally everything else.
Our turf grasses evolved to have large animals munching them down, which is why we have to cut them with machines. However, the machines fail entirely to fulfill their part of the symbiosis.
Most importantly, the machines spew shredded plant material all over the ground, where the mess dries out and essentially does nothing. Lawns are too short to hold in the ground's moisture, and perpetually sun-drenched because of the scalped plant cover. Ruminants chew their cud to help their bacteria break down the incredibly tough plant material into a form that releases the absorbable nutrients. Lawn mowers are not meticulous like that. The shreds take forever to be decomposed—assuming they are decomposed on-site at all instead of being blown or washed away.
The spewing of shredded plant gunk is something that certainly has unique impacts on the plant life. I have particularly noticed that grass clippings get stuck to leaves of nearby plants (often causing them to rot) or even pierce through leaves, injuring or killing the leaf. The death of a single leaf on a single plant is tiny, but tiny stresses like these can determine which plants are capable of thriving in an environment and which die out. A plant might happen to respond badly to frequent micro-injuries.
Here's an interesting fact: There is a highly endangered plant found in Kentucky called running buffalo-clover. Why do you think it is called that?
The running part means it forms long, vine-like stems that sprawl out and run along the ground, growing new roots along their length.
The buffalo part refers to the plant's association with bison. When bison trample on it, they chop the running stems with their sharp hooves. Since the stems are rooted into the ground, they can live on their own without being linked to the main plant, and in this way, the bison are chopping the plants up into more plants!

Overprotective (Part 1)
Based off of this post It all came to a head with The Incident™.
You were frustrated, having just left Levi's room. You'd brought him a series that you thought he'd love, it was much more like some of the stuff he used to be into, which had heartbreak and drama, but you'd heard it had a good resolution, even if it was sad. But the second things started turning sour emotionally, he began to panic. And when he asked if you knew what would happen, and you said "I've heard about the ending, but I saved actually knowing it for you", you didn't expect what he did next. He stopped the show and took the DVD out. This started a long fight that you barely understood. Him being upset that you weren't 'taking care of yourself', and you being upset that he was trying to micro-manage what you watched! You even jabbed at him telling him that "Avoiding the sad stuff isn't healthy!" which only made him more upset. You didn't understand why, so you just left. You ran into Asmodeus, who started worrying about the stress you were visibly under. Stress isn't good for one's health. He first asked if you wanted to take a soothing bath with him, which you shrugged off, thinking that would be the end of it. But it wasn't. He kept badgering you to let him help you destress. It started very flirty at first... Until it became desperate. You continued to decline, and he became more worried, which caught Satan's attention. When Satan heard you were stressed out, several stress-related illnesses flashed through his memory and he became very serious trying to give you other options. If anything, their insistence on controlling another aspect of your life was making it worse. You were on the verge of exploding when Belphegor came around. You called out to him, but he turned right around and walked away. You frustratedly chased after him, but when you turned the corner he disappeared behind, he was gone. Instead, you found Mammon. With the shadiest bag of vitamins you've ever seen. No label, just some random supplement in a plastic bag. "You want some vitamins?" The sight would have made you laugh a week ago, but right now, it was just frustrating. "No! I want everyone to stop badgering me! And for Belphegor to stop AVOIDING me!" "Sounds like you could eat. Lemme cook you up something." Mammon was the one who was the best at reaching out. He'd been slyly learning how to cook on the side, so he could get more veggies and fruits into your diet. And the food he's learned to cook was really yummy. Begrudgingly, you accept, and he takes you to the kitchen, also giving Asmo and Satan a covert thumbs up. The two let him take care of you, seeing that your stress instantly began to melt at the idea of food. That is.. Until you got to the kitchen. Mammon begins pulling out veggies and fruit to make you a few dishes, but Beelzebub keeps hovering around to try to control your portions. No matter how much you told him it was insulting, he just couldn't bring himself to stop worrying. Mammon always makes you too much food, seeing as how he keeps trying to pack in the nutrients like they're going to culminate in prolonging your life indefinitely. Once again, you're pissed, and this time with new vigor. You finally storm out of the kitchen and out of the house, only to see Lucifer coming in from the walkway. And he's blinded by how dangerous it is for you to walk around Devildom alone. He tells you as much and you just shout "WELL I HOPE I DIE THEN, BECAUSE IT'D BE BETTER THAN THIS HELLSCAPE" while trying to brush past him in frustration. You didn't even mean the words, but no one had been listening to you and no one was giving you a chance to control anything in your life without supervision. They've been so controlling and so accidentally belittling, making you feel less-than, making you feel like a child in a house without love. Part 2

1) Eat meat. Vegan and vegetarian are totally cool if that’s your vibe. No disrespect there. But as omnivorous animals who can credit cooked meat for our brain masses, I honestly believe not eating meat leads to lack of sex drive, depression, and micro/macro nutrient deficiencies.
2) Eat high protein. What is high protein for you of course depends on your body size. But if you want to fuel male sexual urges, eat animals and keep the protein high and of course get some other food groups in there. I focus on the protein (also vitamin D and iron) because these I believe they will increase libido and erection strength.
3) lift weights. If you want to cause your body to create aggressive hormones related to sex, you can help this out by causing it to create hormones by lifting weights and building muscle.
4) Give up porn (temporarily). I love porn!!!!!! But it’s easy to get too into it and sometimes our brains need a re-set. Instead, masturbate with imagination only… but don’t imagine porn!! Lol. Imagine fucking your hot coworker.

PIKMIN PSUEDO-BIOLOGY RAMBLES

I feel like pikmin would be dual classified. Lichen are both classified a species of alga and fungus, as an example. Maybe pikmin are like this as well?
Since they are plants (and animals I guess) they have to consume matter and expel it, so they probably absorb nectar through their skin. This sounds weird but hear me out:
Amphibians also breathe through their skin and possess lungs. I think water pikmin would develop lungs (why they have a mouth) compared to other pikmin. Also might explain why other pikmin types are incapable of going into water.
Plants absorb their nutrients through the soil via roots and the stomata on leaves. Pikmin might collect light energy and carbon dioxide through their leaves but also get substantial matter through nectar that they absorb through their skin.
Pikmin also might have vascular systems like plants more than an animal’s circulatory system. They probably produce hormones like gibberrellic acid and cytokinin to stimulate growth, and also sprout their flowers to attract pollinators. I assume they would have symbiotic relationships with pollinators, but Pikmin primarily reproduce via an onion so I’m not sure where to go from here.
I wonder how they absorb micro/macronutrients when they don’t have roots. Maybe they develop roots before the rest of the body to create vasculature, then their skin forms around it? Then they are plucked out fully formed. Maybe instead of being in an embryonic seed like a plant, they develop underground before being “born” I guess.
Just some thoughts since I want to explore this further. I’m also a bio student in college right now so I love practicing my skills with stuff like this, lol

THINGS YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU
 1. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
2. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
3. Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
4. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
5. To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.
6. For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.
7. Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic
8. Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
9. Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
10. Easy Deviled Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
11. Expanding Frosting When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving. 
12. Reheating refrigerated bread To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
13. Newspaper weeds away  Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers. 
14. Broken Glass  Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily. (NOTE - That’s what Wonder Bread is great for!)
15. No More Mosquitoes Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away. 
16. Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.
17. Flexible vacuum To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings. 
18. Reducing Static Cling Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... guess what! ... static is gone.
19. Measuring Cups Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out. (Or spray the measuring cup or spoon with Pam before using) 
20. Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
21. Re-opening envelopesIf you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.
22. Conditioner Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
23. Goodbye Fruit Flies  To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever! 
24. Get Rid of Ants  Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
25. Dryer Filter Even if you are very diligent about cleaning the lint filter in your dryer it still may be causing you a problem. If you use dryer sheets a waxy build up could be accumulating on the filter causing your dryer to over heat. The solution to this is to clean your filter with with a toothbrush and hot soapy water every 6 months.☆

Change of seasons is here and with it the coughs and colds that come with your body going: Is it hot? Is it cold? What the fuck?!?!?!?!?! That is my current reality and I feel the need to share helpful advice.
If you have even the slightest of coughs, build up your damn pillows. I hate despise and revile this advice. As soon as my mother hears someone cough she asks how many pillows they've got. I am a stomach sleeper and there is NO comfortable position that you can sleep on your stomach with more than 1 pillow, but the last few nights I have been sleeping with a pile of pillows at basically a 45 degree angle and hating every moment of it but it actually bloody works - damnit. There's a reason hospital beds are able to be raised and pillow fluffing was such an important part of looking after an invalid in ye olden days. You cough less and breath better sleeping basically upright.
Broth. You know you need to stay hydrated, you've probably got sports drinks and juice and tea etc. But there's a good reason humans have been feeding other sick humans broth ever since we figured out how to boil stuff in water. It does triple duty hydrating you, providing the nutrients you're missing out on cause you can't stomach food, and also replacing the salts you're loosing because you have gross stuff streaming from every orifice. Throw some fat in there, I guarantee you need it, that 'buhhh can't think thoughts' feeling you have will clear up significantly if you give your brain some fat to fuel it. I like to drop a lump of butter in my chicken stock because it tastes good but you could use vege stock and coconut oil, olive oil, whatever. Your brain needs fat and fatty food probably makes you turn green right now but somehow it's palatable when you add a bit to some broth. While you're at it add some shredded chicken or tofu and get in some protein and add noodles or have it with bread to get in some carbs.
If you have a runny nose BLOW YOUR DAMN NOSE. If you are coughing up gunge from your chest spit it out. I don't care how many boxes of tissues you go through. I don't care how gross it it. Your body is trying to rid itself of that crap so help it out. Whenever I hear someone sniffling I want to smack them around the ears because they are just making themselves sicker for longer - and it's gross to listen to.
You know how the skin around your nose goes all raw and red and peeling when you have a runny nose? That doesn't have to happen. My nose has been streaming for days but I only have the slightest bit of raw skin that I predict will have cleared up by tomorrow. I've been applying lip balm like crazy because mouth-breathing dries your lips and I've also been slathering that balm around my nose. It's provided a barrier to the burning salts and prevented the skin from drying out. You can also use nappy rash cream, seriously it's great stuff for any minor skin complaint.
Wash. I know you don't want to. I know you have no energy and you feel gross anyway and it's easier to just marinate in your own juices. But you will feel better if you're clean.
And if you can find an extra shred of energy after cleaning yourself try to clean up your sickbed area even slightly, the laundry and trash building up is going to make you feel mentally worse so if you can even grab a bag and stick all the trash in it, even if the bag stays in your room rather than wherever the trash is supposed to go.
Don't feel bad about sitting in bed or huddling on the couch for days on end. Don't feel like you should be doing something and it's so stupid that you're tired because you're not doing anything. You are doing something. You are waging war against micro organisms that are trying to conquer your body. That takes a lot of energy, you have a right and reason to be tired so don't beat yourself up about it.

Log 225
FTL: Alright. I have been planning my next project over the course of the last cycle. I've also been replying to everything that I've neglected to during the crisis. I do feel that perhaps I've missed some important events, but I didn't know about any such events before I partially repaired my communication systems, it's not much of a change.
FTL: As for my next project, I plan to attempt to create a beneficial Rot that will take over the role of the micro-organisms that repair the outer structures of Iterators - henceforth I will be calling them SRMOs, short for Structural Repairment Micro-Organisms. Calling them 'micro-organisms' is too vague, and the files I have on them don't give them any one specific name. Even if they did, I have no reason to utilise that name. SRMO it is.
FTL: Metal Rot is a now-uncommon byproduct of making a mistake when experimenting upon the genetics of an SRMO. The process of their creation is the same as any other Rot, and Metal Rot often ends up being an Expanding Rot. The reason that it becomes its own category (though Metal Rots can still fit into any of the sub-groups of general Rot) is due to its nature of being microscopic in starting stages, and therefore incredibly difficult to detect, as well as the fact that it can only consume the metal that the SRMO it was created from was capable of repairing.
FTL: SRMOs are actually very interesting themselves. From what I understand, they consume the metal, divide it into half, use up a bit as a source for energy, and then replace the metal that they previously consumed with double the coverage of the material that was previously there. Of course, this does mean that every single time this process happens, the metal gets thinner. SRMOs were never meant to be the primary repair mechanism, they were always just a backup for the meantime between maintenances. But with the Ancients now gone, they have indeed become the primary outer repair system for any Iterator that has them.
FTL: They were never sustainable. Just another example of the Ancients' lack of foresight. Truly, it astounds me every single time that I find a lapse of judgement like this on their part. I hold no true ill will towards Ancients, truth to be told, I hold no stance on them at all. I just do not understand how it's even possible to mess up so many times, and never do anything about it, simply leaving forever.
FTL: My project that I will now be embarking upon consists of my attempting to create a Metal Rot that has the exact same functions as an SRMO, except more efficient and sustainable. And, of course, not fatal or even detrimental at all to the structure that it is repairing. Sounds absurd, a beneficial Rot, does it not?
FTL: If such a modified Metal Rot is allowed to spread over the surface of an Iterator, then it could fulfill the same purpose as an SRMO while being, as previously mentioned, more efficient and sustainable. Efficient due to its nature of already being everywhere as well as being much quicker at the task, capable of redistributing resources across the surface instead of keeping faults concentrated in one place. That plays into the sustainability, which is also comprised of the fact that it'd ideally be able to gather nutrients from sources other than what it is repairing. Potentially the air? Unlikely that it'd ever be capable of gathering nutrients from biotic things, due to the fact that it is a Rot made from a creature that does not consume living things.
FTL: Most Rots are capable of consuming both biotic and abiotic materials, though most tend to stick to organisms as those contain more energy that it can utilise for itself. A Rot that can only consume one of the two would be rather interesting. Such a thing wouldn't typically happen, as it is extremely detrimental to it, especially so on the side of not being able to absorb biotics.
FTL: Of course, this solution too is unsustainable. While it would make structures last for longer than SRMOs would, the base mechanic of redistributing ever-thinning resources remains. But that is merely yet another fault of how Iterators were created in the first place; we are unsustainable in nature.
FTL: If I do have what I perceive as success in creating such a Rot, then I only have one option. That being to, of course, test it on myself. I do not know what I will do with it if it is successful, as I am doing this out of sheer curiousity, as is part of the motivation for many things I do. If my suspicions about me being successful are proven wrong upon my testing of the results, well. Same rules apply as always.
FTL: If I fail and succumb, it merely my fault, and those are the consequences that I must face.
FTL: It's nice to have a proper project once more. Engineering Rot will be an interesting endeavour.

Eat This, Not That: Here's How Long Eggs Last—and How to Tell If They're Bad
Eggs are considered a superfood for good reason. Despite our collective love affair with eggs, recent shortages resulting from the latest avian flu outbreaks coupled with inflation and rising food costs across many grocery categories have made this fragile food a more precious commodity. So when you do find yourself a gorgeous carton of fresh eggs while grocery shopping, you'll surely want to get the best out of your investment. This means not allowing your eggs to go to waste before you're ready to eat and enjoy them.

How long do eggs last?

According to the USDA, eggs have a fairly long shelf life. After being refrigerated at 40°F or slightly below, raw eggs still in their uncracked shells can last for three to five weeks. However, the clock on their freshness really begins before they are even distributed to grocery stores.
Every carton sold by major and minor grocery stores should include the following three imprints: a pack-by date, best-by date, and sell-by or expiration (EXP) date. The "pack-by" date denotes the day that the eggs were originally packed in their carton. Typically, this is a three-digit number that falls between 001–365, with each trilogy of digits corresponding to a day in the year. For example, "001" represents January 1, and "356" stands for December 31. So, if your eggs were packaged on February 17, the pack-by date on the carton would say "048."
The "best-by" date tells you how long the eggs are expected to maintain their Grade A quality status, which is roughly around 28–35 days after they are packaged. Readers Digest notes that according to the USDA, eating eggs beyond their best-by date can still sometimes be safe, but be warned that this can also impact the quality of their taste. For the freshest eggs, always be sure to pick up a carton before the "best-by" date. The EXP date notes the last day your eggs are projected to still be good.
Although these numbers are a useful gauge of freshness, it's important to note that these are merely indicators. As the USDA notes, "Inspection, for wholesomeness, is mandatory but grading, for quality, is voluntary." Additionally, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources explains that "use of either a 'Sell-By' or 'Expiration' (EXP) date is not federally required, but may be state required, as defined by the egg laws in the state where the eggs are marketed. Some state egg laws do not allow the use of a 'sell-by' date."
This lack of federal oversight suggests that keeping your eggs fresh beyond their projected expiration is kind of a luck of the draw. But you don't have to roll the dice and risk illness by consuming spoiled food to determine whether or not your eggs are still good. Between the use of your five senses and a few helpful hacks, you can easily make sure they're still safe enough to eat while also prolonging their shelf life.
