You stand with your hand on the waistline. It's a scene and we're all here in plain sight. I can hear them whisper as we pass by. It's a bad sign.

(Y/N) didn't know what was happening to her body. Maybe it was the hot weather in Monaco for the race weekend, or the small amount of breakfast she had before leaving the house. But every inch of her being was tingling, and it felt weird being under her skin. Out of all the times she had ever stepped into a Formula One paddock, this was the first one she ever felt like she was about to faint. After all, everyone was onto to find out her little secret.

Lando Norris, her best friend since she was only four, was at the McLaren garage when she arrived with all of his other friends. He was just doing his job; talking to sponsors and being the sunshine boy he has always been, making a good impression on people that needed to be impressed by him. But the conversation between Zac Brown and one of his team’s investors was long forgotten when his eyes spotted (Y/N) in the middle of the crowd.

She was simply walking alongside Max and his girlfriend, Pietra, when their eyes crossed in the paddock. Lando cracked the biggest smile and fixed his eyes on hers for a second, only to get his attention called by Zac again. He was soon dragged into the conversation again, only to be dismissed a few seconds later. Then, he played a whole scene, worthy of a goodman Oscar film.

The wind was blowing on his hair as he paraded towards her in the paddock, his curls moving beautifully with the pace. His hands were resting on his waistline, one of them sneaking under his McLaren shirt. She always thought he looked beautiful in his work attired, but damn it, this time Lando looked flawless in them. He had a soft smile resting on his lips and he could feel the heart beating out of his chest, wanting to jump onto (Y/N) from the second he saw her. Yet, he played it cool for the entire walk towards her. Nobody could know about them.

At that point, it had been three months and a couple of weeks since Lando and (Y/N) had finally got together after years of unconditional love and pinning after the other. They had met at a very early age, when their fathers used to golf at the same field every Saturday morning, and had been best friends ever since. After a while, they just couldn’t deny that their friendship had become something else, after years of her coming to all of his races in karting, F3 and, later on, F1. After all the times he rooted for her in university and had taken care of her when things got too rough. They just couldn’t deny they were in love with each other.

But Lando’s experiences with public relationships hadn’t been exactly… pleasant. So they both agree, after much talk, to keep it a secret from everyone to not ruin anything between them. This was too precious, and delicate, to have the bad energy bring them down right at the beginning of things. And ever since then, they had been so good at doing so. Yet, his fans had caught that something had shifted in the long term friendship. So now, they had to be very, extremely, careful.

“Took you too long”, he commented, shrugging as he stood right in front of (Y/N).

“Max was really enjoying the courtesy breakfast from the hotel”, she smiled at him, looking at his face right through her lashes. Lando just couldn’t help it, thinking she looked too cute, and he wrapped his arms around her, face burying in the crook of her neck.

“I’m glad you’re here”, he kept his voice low, only for her to hear it.

“Always”, she sneaked a kiss on his cheek before he moved onto talking to Max and Pietra.

Lando has showed affection for (Y/N) so many times before, with the hugs and tiny kisses here and there, but everybody knew it was different this time. Maybe it was the long starings or how they’d linger longer on the hugs. Or maybe it was him wanting to be around her every second he could. But the gossip social media pages and the whispers were getting louder. (Y/N) noticed it when they walked towards the McLaren motorhome, one of his hands soft resting in the middle of her back.

“Did you see that?” One girl whispered to her friend as she passed by, but (Y/N) couldn’t listen to the reply. All the whispers were deafening, and she wanted to scream. They weren’t a good sign.

Something happens when everybody finds out. See the vultures circling, dark clouds. Love’s a fragile little flame, it could burn out.

When Lando finally closed the doors to his driver room, (Y/N) felt the weight being lifted from her shoulders. She audibly sighed, and her boyfriend looked at her in worry. For a second, they looked at each other and laughed at their situation. They were damned.

“They are 100% onto us”, (Y/N) whined and Lando agreed with a nod, before pulling his girl for a hug. “Shit, we were doing so great with the hiding. I thought it was really going to last”.

“My fans should be hired as private investigators, I swear to God”, he joked before pulling her face up for a kiss. “Didn’t get a good morning one when I woke up”.

“Well, I can’t help it if you’re an early bird”, she giggled, leaving countless small pecks on his lips again. “I was tired from last night”.

“I finish you off just good, didn’t I?” He cheekily smirked before turning to his closet, pulling the fireproof undergarments he was required to wear before the suit.

“I didn’t need to know that”, Max commented as he opened the door and quickly was scoffed by Lando.

“Didn’t invite you to the conversation, mate. Get the fuck off my room!” Lando joked, but Max still found his spot on the couch. Pietra came in a few seconds later, settling close to (Y/N) just so they could laugh at the boys.

“We came in to say good luck on the race”, Pietra said, pulling Lando for a quick hug. “We know we’re late and that you need a moment with our girl. But just wanted to wish you the best”.

“She came to wish you the best. I came for the A/C”, Max joked, closing his eyes with the nice temperature of the room. Lando threw a cushion at him, making everyone laugh. Their brotherhood was the best. “But you know, we’ll be rooting for you and shit”.

“I know, mate”, Lando held his hand out to Max, who got up with his friends help. Even though they banter all the time, the boys hugged and smiled with their interaction. Just like (Y/N), Max had been there for Lando for as long as he could remember.

“We’ll let you alone with your lucky charm”, Max winked at (Y/N), who smiled widely at him.

They had barely closed the door when Lando attacked his girlfriend’s lips once again. (Y/N) was taken by surprise when she got lifted off the floor once again, but quickly melted into the kiss, slowing the speed down just to the soft pace that she liked.

“Easy there”, she said against his lips.

“My lucky charm”, he said back, not stopping the kiss for a single second. “Gonna make me get a podium just by being here. I got pole yesterday just because of you”.

“That’s what I’m talking about”, she smiled, breaking the kiss apart to speed him up. “Come on, you need to get dressed”.

“Wanna see me naked that badly?”, he joked, taking off his shirt to start changing into his race attired.

“I don’t need that. I already saw it last night”, she winked and Lando melted, bursting into laughing.

“I love you because we have the same sense of humour”, he took off his trousers, giving his girlfriend the view he knew she wanted to see.

“Well, but it’s never a bad sight to see”, (Y/N) smiled. Behind closed doors, it was so easy for them to be a couple. Her heart felt safe and it was like no one in the world could harm them. But anxiety always gets the best of her. One moment she was laughing and joking, and the other she was on the verge of hyperventilation.

Lando noticed it, though. “What’s wrong with you?”, he sat next to her, only wearing his underwear, when he saw the quick change of humour on his girl. From the very first moment he laid her eyes on her in the paddock, he could sense she was off.

“I love you so much, you know?” (Y/N) let a tear fall down for relief, and Lando quickly wiped it off with his thumb. “I don’t want them to ruin what we have”.

“They won’t ruin this, I promise you”, he pressed a long kiss to her cheekbone and she spilled a few more salty tear, they met his lips in seconds. “You’re safe inside my heart”.

“I can just see them ruining this for us, you know? The public”, she admitted. “The whispers and the blurry distanced images on social media. The comments.”

“I told you not to read the comments, baby”, Lando shook his head in disapproval and (Y/N) shrugged. “My love, this thing between us has been here for years. If everybody finds out, I will do everything that I can to protect you and what we have, okay? Don’t worry about it”.

“Okay”, she replied, hugging him once again. “I love you, Lan”.

“I love you too. So much”, he admitted, kissing the crown of her head.

Cause they got the cages, they got the boxes and guns. They are the hunters, we are the foxes. And we run.

Before he went on to continue with his pre-race routine, Lando stayed in his room for a while longer, just letting his girlfriend hold him for a little while. He was fucking terrified of the Monaco Grand Prix, specially because the race was very tricky; a driver against track kind of race. So having his girl alongside him calmed his heart. He had pole position. He was going to make it all worth it.

“Remember that I’m always with you”, she kissed him again before they got out of the room.

All Lando wanted to do was hold her hand until he was required to be inside his car, but since their situation was delicate and everyone already thought they were together, he just couldn’t risk it. So he held her hand for as long as he could, but had to let it go by the time they got close to the sea of photographers, all waiting for the pilots. (Y/N) stayed behind, ready to meet Max and Pietra to watch the race from the hospitality. He got one last look at her, who waved at him, giving a shot of confidence to his body. He could do it. And most importantly, he was going to give everything to bring this win to his girl.

Max quickly found (Y/N) lost between the crowd and pulled her to sit with all of Lando’s friends. The race was about to start, and the cars would be out at any second now. And yet, all she could think of was a group of people, sitting right behind her, and whispering while staring at her back. Annoyed, she turned around and squinted her eyes at them, making the group shut up. They were one hundred percent talking about Lando and her; it was visible because of the way they stared at her wrist, with one of his bracelets shinning brightly for the whole world to see. She brought it up to her hand, holding the number 4 charm between her fingers. It would be fine.

“I know why you’re like this for the entire morning”, Max whispered close to her ear. “Don’t worry about people. He loves you so much. Nothing bad is going to happen”.

“Yeah, I know that”, she nodded at him. “I love him so much too”.

(Y/N) let go of the bracelet, only to hold Max’s hands. They had been best friends too for the longest time. So after Lando, he was the one who provided her so much comfort and safety. Pietra did too, so it was nice when she left her post next to her boyfriend to hug (Y/N).

Baby, I know places we won’t be found. And they’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down. Cause I know places we can hide.

Lando wasn’t a great fan of alcohol, but the taste of champagne on his lips after finishing P2 in Monaco felt so good. A weight taken off his shoulders to have finished on the podium. It wasn’t a win, but it was definitely the best result he had in his mind. “I’m just glad I finished the race”, he thought.

Staring down the podium, he found his girlfriend standing so excitedly for him, jumping up and down with the result. And as if it was possible, his smile widened at the sight and he shook the bottle to splash just enough to reach her downstairs. He was so happy. Genuinely happy, on top of the world, and no one was going to bring him down.

The post race interviews were taking too long for him, who desperately wanted to celebrate with his team, his friends and (Y/N). But when his PR team finally called him back to the garage, he went rushing to see the people he adored the most. He hugged a few people from his team as he arrived, and Max was the first friend he found and shared a long hug. From over his bestie’s shoulders, he spotted (Y/N) standing behind, with proud tears brimming her eyes and a big smile painted on her face. Lando immediately let go off Max and pulled his girlfriend just to hold her for a few seconds.

They could hear the cameras clicking around them and the people calling Lando, but he was in a trance. When (Y/N) was there, it was like the entire world didn’t exist. He was P2 in Monaco; the race that stresses him out so much from the very early moments of his career. And his girlfriend, the person he loved the most in the world since he was a little kid, was there to celebrate it with him. Life couldn’t get any better.

“My boy”, she whispered in his ear, her mouth very well hidden between them so no one could read her lips. “I’m so proud of you. I love you so much”.

“Thank you for being here. I love you more, baby”, his lips were also hidden, and it pained him that he just couldn’t openly say those words to her. “I can’t wait to kiss you, oh my God. I’m going insane”.

“Just a few more minutes”, she held his face between her hands and pressed a kiss to his cheek before giving space for other friends to talk to him.

Zac Brown took the longest time with Lando, giving him the post race pep talk he always needed. And by the end of it, at the rush of the moment, he admitted his new relationship to his boss, who laughed at the admission.

“I knew you were head over heels for this girl”, Zac said, giving Lando a few taps on the shoulder.

“We’re just keeping it a secret, between the closest friends, so nobody can ruin it”, Lando added to his confession. “But, yeah, (Y/N) is my dream girl and you know me. Can’t keep shit from anyone. I just wanted you to know”.

“Go celebrate it with her! You still have a few hours until we fly to Spain for the next race. Take her somewhere nice”.

“Where? This whole city is crowded with paparazzi and cameras. I just can’t risk it, Zac”.

“I know a place you can take her”.

Lights flash and we’ll run for the fences. Let them say what they want, we won’t hear it. Loose lips sink ships all the damn time. Not this time.

His driver room was getting too small to fit his love for (Y/N), and Lando felt like those four walls would eventually burst from the flames of his heart. He was getting irritated by having to hide it from everyone. But having her holding him and pressing delicate kisses to his face made him feel like everything was going to be just fine.

“I want to go out to celebrate it with you. Properly, as boyfriend and girlfriend”.

“Very funny, Lan”, she crossed her arms and he arched his brows at her attitude. “If you can magically find a public place, we can just be boyfriend and girlfriend without the prying eyes, I’ll gladly let you take me there”.

“Lucky for you, I have the best boss in the world.”

The paddock was absolute mayhem after the race, specially the bridge that connects it to the marina, where all the boats were anchored for the weekend. Lando tried to be subtle with (Y/N), not holding her hand as they walked in public, but after almost losing her among the people and the cameras flashing on his eyes. With much effort, he found her hands and laced them together, just so they wouldn’t get lost.

“Lando, what are you doing? People will see us”.

“Let them say what they want. I don’t fucking care”, he tightened his hold on her hand and dragged her to the marina. There were a lot of parties happening around the docks, with people enjoying their time post race to get drunk with other millionaires, who travelled all the way to Monaco for the luxury of the weekend. (Y/N) was actually very confused with where they were going.

“Why are we here?” She frowned, but he ignored, too busy looking for Zac around the place. His boss was waiting next to the boat, talking to the people who take care of his boat. A smile flashed on Lando’s face when he saw that everything was already arranged perfectly for him.

“Lando! (Y/N)! It’s all nice and ready for you”, Zac smiled at the girl, taking her hand to shake. “I talked to the commander, they are going to take you to a private place and I made sure they had a nice dinner prepped for you two, okay?”

“You’re the best, Zac. Thank you so much”, Lando hugged his boss and then let it go to help his girlfriend get into the boat. “And please delay my flight for another day, boss!”

“I’ll try my best, kid”

Lando and (Y/N) hid inside the boat while it shipped away from the shore. They were served with champagne as they waited for their getaway. Their boat was very tiny compared to the other ones that were anchored for the race weekend, but it was enough for a couple getaway for the night. Zac probably paid the team to keep their mouth shut and, that way, they could enjoy being together outside his flat for once.

“Okay, this is perfect”, she giggled, pressing a kiss to Lando’s collarbone, exposed by his button-up shirt. “God, today was so stressful for me. I’m actually tired”.

“Oh, me too”, he giggled. “I mean, I’m getting tired of all the hiding. Kind of want to go around screaming that I have the best girl in the world as my girlfriend”.

“Lando, we talked about this”. (Y/N) was afraid of the response she would get once they were public. If there’s someone who was going to suffer the consequences, it would be her. She would have to deal with the comments and the bad shit from the internet; not him.

“Loose lips sink ships”, he quoted the words his girlfriend said a few weeks before. “Not this time, okay? I won’t let people do this to you”.

Just grab my hand and don't ever drop it, my love. They are the hunters, we are the foxes. And we run.

Enjoying this night with each other had been a dream come true. The peace, the quietness and the privacy from the ocean was everything they need. Somehow it gave them hopes that, even though it was hard, everything was going to be alright. After having dinner, prepared by the boat’s chef, they decided to enjoy some alone time out on the boat.

Lando took some amazing pictures of (Y/N) on the boat and they had a really fun time doing a small photoshoot. They pushed each other playfully and threw compliments that easily heated up each other’s cheeks. Not to mention the funny faces she did for the camera, making him think he couldn’t love her more. She was it for him.

“I hate being a broken record, but I do think your fans are on the verge of finding out about us”, (Y/N) broke the silence between them, that was filled by soft music they put on for their small photoshoot. “I mean, right now, I can just see their miraculous minds creating theories of why we left holding hands today. Or why did you linger longer while hugging me after the race”.

“Do you trust me?” Lando put his hand out for her and she laced their fingers together, as a silent ‘yes’ for her boyfriend. “You need to stop thinking that going public is an absolute nightmare scenario, alright?”

“I’m overreacting, aren’t I?”, she scrunched her nose and sighed. “I know. It’s just, I don’t know how you deal with the fame. It feels like we’re foxes and they are hunters, trying to catch us all the damn time”.

“Then we’ll keep running from them for as long as we need to”, Lando promised, pulling her closer to hug her.

(Y/N) took a moment to admire her boyfriend’s beauty. Her head resting on his shoulder and fingers trying to touch every inch of the skin of his face. “I’m so lucky to have you, Lan. It makes me feel so stupid that I waited too long to say that I loved you for the first time”.

“Well, I’m the luckiest too”, he said with the most beautiful smile on his face. “Without your endless support, and the love you sent me all day, I wouldn’t have performed so well today. Or any other day in my career. It doesn’t matter if you only get to kiss me now. You’ve been the most amazing person in my life for years now. I’m so glad I have you, (Y/N)”.

“I promise we don’t have to keep this a secrecy for much longer, okay?”, she rubbed circles on his cheekbone and looked between his eyes.

“We’ll run for as long as you need us to. And when you’re ready, the whole world will know how much I love you. I swear to God, I’ll buy thousands of drones to write a message in the sky just so everyone can know how much I love you”, he joked, making (Y/N). “But while you’re not ready, I know places we can hide”.

Baby, I know places we won’t be found. And they’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down. Cause I know places we can hide. I know places…

Hi ! hope you're having a great day/evening/night,

I had an idea for a smau with someone on the f1 grid (it can be anyone but I have a preference for either Oscar or Logan), so I'm a fan of the bands Ghost and Sleep Token, which is something so very different from f1 and I kept wondering what would happen if those fandom where to merge together, so the request basically is that the reader is in a band like ghost or sleep token and they're dating one of the guys on the grid, and so those 2 very different fandom meet,

so like how would they interact and all, or maybe there would be some people that are in both fandoms, idk

Dou you think that Netflix streaming The Band of Brothers and The Pacific expand our little fandom? If it expands what changes happen? Will be the changes in good way or bad way?

i think it depends on if they throw it on the front page or if they just add it and you have to come across it yourself. i do think more people will discover it and enjoy it. i think we may see a few more blogs popping up but i don't know if it'll be on as big a scale as other fandoms, or for newer shows. if they promote it a lot and have it splashed across the main page then i think we'd definitely see a lot of people talking about it (mostly on twitter though, rather than here)

if we do end up with a mass expanding of the fandom, i think it could go either way. it's always nice to have a few more people around and i'm always down for welcoming new people into the fandom. i think it'll be worse over on twitter, rather than here. i find that when netflix adds shows, the new people flock to twitter to talk about it first. but then again, they may go there looking for hbo war fans and find it empty, so they may go looking further and figure that tumblr is their only real option, since it does feel like we're the only place with an interactive hbo war fandom. but maybe all the new fans will congregate over there and there'll be twitter hbo fans and tumblr hbo fans and not much crossover or overlap between us.

i used to be part of the f1 fandom over on the (ex)bird app and all the dudebros kicked off when new fans came after watching drive to survive, but it really wasn't bad. in fact, it was nice to see new people fall in love with different drivers and the sport. like imagine watching someone become obsessed with doc roe for the first time? or become completely unhinged because winnix will NOT stop flirting with each other in every damn episode, or they notice webgott's chemistry and write a massive post screaming about them for the first time. it might just be really fun to see. people seemed to enjoy me liveposting my first watch of the pacific, so maybe it'll just be a lot of fun things like that when new people come? i know that with a huge amount of new people comes the higher chance for drama and bad eggs, but i do think we've got something special here which will be hard to ruin. the f1 fandom on twitter was already a complete mess with drama every single day and just generally being a horrible place to spend your time, so it's really not comparable with our fandom here, but that experience did make me realise that even if there's a lot more new people, they tend to adapt to the specific ways of the fandom they're entering, rather than disrupting it.

maybe i'm just being optimistic and they'll come and burn our fandom to the ground but i'm choosing to look on the bright side.

alternatively, i was also in the tennis fandom and we had a huge influx of new people and it got really really toxic and pretty much ended the original cute little thing we had going on so :)

ultimately, i think it could go either way (good or bad) but whether it'll be a big noticeable change here on tumblr depends on whether netflix gives it all the bells and whistles when it adds it to the site and whether new fans find each other on twitter first or not.

also it's only going to be on us netflix and no where else apparently. obviously the usa is fucking huge so it's still y'know, impactful, but yeah, just a small thing to note?

it'll be interesting when it finally does happen though, maybe we should make a bingo card of predictions lmao

And so many other things, as if switching teams is not something to sport is known for. And it’s all the girls doing it too. I hate to be generalizing a group, but every time I see something like that, it’s always a Carlos fan girl who knows absolutely nothing About how team switches work.

Like, why can’t people hype up their favorite driver without tearing down another? Because they are literally saying Carlos is better than Louis and we all know that’s not true. Carlos is amazing, but if Lewis was given the right car, he’d be winning.

I made the mistake of looking at the comments, and that will never happen again. All I can say is, after this race, nobody’s going to be winning, except for Max Verstappen. Every time this man loses, he comes back next race even stronger.

I am a huge Lewis Hamilton fan, and at this point I admit it. This year, this year is Maxis, but next year won’t be the same.

trying not to be a shit person about this but all i'm saying is toni has been a loud and proud dan stan for a while now if anyone listened to her streams and such, especially last year.

it doesn't really surprise me that men being friends with men, taking a photo without women present in a men's lockerroom = sexist, horrifying, root of all evil

but going on an American podcast, actually aimed at F1 fans by discussing experiences as an F1 driver, to objectify women and compare "bogan" and "Eastern European" pussy = 🦗

regardless, the media F1 fans consume is 90% of what's so toxic about F1 as a fandom. cannot say if I'll even bother following this sport anymore if a man blinking is going to be deemed a crime against humanity now just because "omg, we no like him, he ruined my baby waby's career." this shit may get the fans who live online and just want to be the bullies of their high schools again excited, but it gets old as hell for normal people. and then people post "omg he has money and everything handed to him, why is he whining about mental health." he's still a relatively young adult and can't even fucking breathe or figure life out for himself without getting cancelled for the most ridiculous reason every 2 days, holy hell i would be beyond struggling with my mental health by now if I were him, I would have probably said fuck this and already retired 🥲

that’s the thing, no one cares when it’s one of the “beloveds” actually being dicks, fans of certain drivers have majorly made me back off drivers that i actually like

daphne jones had always been an enigma. she had people screaming her name in massive arenas and on the streets, but she also had people calling her a whore and other nasty words. daphne couldn’t help who she fell in love with or when she fell in love, at her core she had always been a hopeless romantic. so when her sister insisted she accompany her to the us grand prix, daphne figured why not? it’s not like she had anything to lose or gain by going.

mae had been absolutely enamored by the youngest redbull driver since they first met. daphne was sure they were dating but her little sister never confirmed or denied it. it was adorable to see her sister so in love for the first time ever. well, she had seen her in love before, but never like this, never so enamored she could talk about someone for hours. daphne had been in love before, but it never stuck, all she ever wanted was to find the person she would be with forever, but so far, no luck.

daphne was nervous about being at an f1 race when she had absolutely no clue about the sport, she didn’t want to make a fool of herself. but she wasn’t going to ruin this for her sister, mae had been bouncing up and down, figuratively, since she had agreed to go to the race with her. it was also going to be the first time daphne was meeting the boy who had stolen her sister’s heart, she needed to prepare to give him a shovel talk, like any good older sibling would do. she was not going to have her sister experience the same heartbreak she had, many times.

“i seriously think you’ll love him,” mae excitedly said, as she jumped into daphne’s car. daphne didn’t understand why she had agreed to drive them both to the circuit, but she would do anything for her sister. it wasn't hard to figure out mae jones had her older sister wrapped around her finger.

“is he good to you?” daphne questioned, mae quickly nodded, “then that’s all i need to know.”

“you know one of his coworkers is like a huge fan of you. i’ve heard him listen to your music more times than i can count. he particularly loves 1989. i think he has a crush on you.”

daphne laughed, before realization struck her, “mae, don’t.”

mae smiled innocently at her, “i’m not doing anything. i’m just stating what i’ve seen.”

daniel wasn’t nervous, it’s not like he was meeting his hero, he was only meeting his celebrity crush. the same celebrity crush that he’d had since he’d been in high school. if it were anyone else acting weird daniil would be concerned but it was daniel, he was used to it. it’s not like daniel was jumping around in anticipation or acting out of normal, but everyone around him knew something was off. he seemed, quieter than normal, well the australian chatterbox was always talking or laughing, so this was out of the normal.

christian had sent him a confused look but daniel waved him off, he was fine. okay, maybe he was nervous, but it was daphne jones! you couldn’t really blame him. he nearly jumped out of his seat when max sat next to him, he hadn’t even noticed his arrival, proving just how out of it he was.

“are you okay?” the dutch questioned.

“i’m fine,” daniel lied, “it’s not like i'm meeting my celebrity crush. oh wait, i am.”

“she’s nice,” max said, “almost shit myself when mae introduced us. i think that is because she's my girlfriends sister and not because i have a crush on her.”

“please tell me she isn’t coming over here.”

max smirked, a smirk that only meant trouble and he followed max’s line of sight and his eyes widened. daniel quickly stood up and walked away from max and in the opposite direction of where the jones’ sisters were. mae made eye contact with max, wondering what was wrong with daniel, who was normally very chatty with her. even his own teammate, daniil seemed lost as to what was wrong with daniel. although, daniil was just simply lost as to what was happening, he was more focused on the upcoming race. which led him to wonder why the two toro rosso drivers were in the red bull garage, when they should be in their own getting ready for the race.

daphne looked down at her sister, “is he okay?”

“oh totally,” mae answered, “he just has a major crush on you. i told you this.”

“i didn’t think it would be that bad.”

“it's not,” carlos said, sneaking up on them, “he is just nervous. you make him nervous.”

mae put a hand to her chest, a sign that she had been scared by carlos, “give a girl a warning carlos.”

“perdón,” the spaniard apologized, “earlier max said daniel was nervous to meet your sister. he does not want to make a fool of himself.”

“that’s sweet,” daphne muttered. the conversation was dropped as the two toro rosso drivers were ordered to go back to their garage. they bid goodbye to daniil as max snickered at something on his phone, only showing mae who laughed. daphne smiled softly at the two, happy her sister had found someone who loved her.

daniel knew he could’ve had a better result, and it broke him a little that he just barely managed to end up in the points. at least he had done better than daniil who had dnf along with 7 other guys. it had also come as a relief that he had managed to keep fernando off of him long enough to get the checkered flag before him. the toro rosso drivers had done significantly better than them, getting both p4 and p7.

he sighed, sitting in his garage after his media duties had been done. he had already gotten rid of racing suit and was in much more comfortable clothes. he knew it was only a matter of time before he bumped into daphne jones but he hoped that would be pushed back, for the sake of his sanity. perhaps luck wasn’t on his side, years later he would say it was, when he felt someone sit next to him. daniel tensed thinking maybe a fan had gotten in but realized when he heard a soft hello come out of the person’s mouth, a fan would've freaked out. he turned his head to say hello but the words got stuck in his throat when he realized who was next to him. his eyes widened, like a deer caught in headlights.

he cleared his throat, “hello,” he replied, barley above a whisper. she smiled at him, and maybe it was his crush on her talking, but daniel thought she was the most beautiful girl daniel had ever seen.

“daphne,” she introduced, “daphne jones.”

“ricciardo- i mean daniel ricciardo, pleasure.”

"nice accent. australia?" she questioned. daphne knew the answer, she had done research on the drivers while she had been in the toro rosso garage. well, research was a bit much, all she had done was look up the name of the current drivers and their nationalities. but she would do anything to have one normal conversation with someone and daniel ricciardo seemed like the right person for that.

daniel nodded, "first race?"

"yes, it was interesting, to say the least," daphne answered. daniel nodded again, god he felt like an idiot, only nodding and keeping short questions, "you seem nervous."

"that obvious?" daniel asked, knowing what her answer would be. she laughed it off, "it's a little weird, i'll admit. everyone here says you're quite the charmer and an enchanting person overall."

before he could reply max and mae entered the red bull garage, carlos sainz following after them. mae looked stressed and deflated a bit when she noticed her sister at daniel's side, "there you are! i thought you had gotten lost."

"i did," daphne replied, "and this was the first place i recognized."

"i was promised food," max complained, "can we please get food?"

"i'm starving," daniel said, standing up. he offered a hand to daphne and she took it, standing up. she let go first and turned to face her sister, who was wildly wiggling her eyes rows at her. daphne huffed, rolling her eyes and began walking out of the garage before stopping, “i actually don’t know where i’m going.”

the five of them laughed together before letting daniel lead the way, he was the expert in all things texas.

alright, i’m going to... try to soften up my way of speaking and explain something important to me, that’s been bothering me. please listen? please stop talking about how “lewis and max fans” sniping each other is ruining your f1blr experience, with the implication that both camps are equally irresponsible. no. wait. listen to me. i can’t speak for people of color, regarding one slur max has used, and i wouldn’t. i can talk about my experience as a disabled and neurodivergent person, regarding the other slur he’s used. i get it. curate your experience. i really, really do. i work really hard to do it, because i know i have a personality disorder that makes me feel the extremes of emotions, including anger and outrage, at the drop of a hat and i don’t like bringing other people down for fun. but when you’re disabled and/or neurodivergent, there is no fully curating your experience. ableism is everywhere. i am not saying there aren’t absolute pieces of shit in the anti-max camp - and that’s what i’m going to call it, going forward. i’m not defending anyone, in any group in any fandom, who sends anonymous hate, who suicide baits, who uses slurs, themselves, or any of these other absolutely indefensible behaviors. i am saying that, in the anti-max camp, some of us are angry and can’t contain it because we’re just trying to enjoy something that we love (and such things are especially important to us, because our everyday lives are pain, or doctor’s appointments where we get poked and prodded, or living in a world not designed for how our brains work) - and there max stands as a reminder of the reality we’re trying to escape, because he chose to use slurs and not apologize for it, not show any personal growth, not try to understand why what he did was harmful and make an effort to connect with the people he hurt and listen to our voices. when you act like we’re just petulant fans throwing a fit and being “toxic”, what you’re really saying is “you being upset by something that routinely negatively effects your life in a very real way is harshing my vibes, please just let it go.” remember when you were all mad at daniel a few days ago? i’ve got bad news for you. let me put it this way: i also hate nikita mazepin. i’m a victim of people like him, many times over, and i talk shit about him, too. he’s a very painful reminder of things i’m trying to forget by watching f1 and being happy and i can’t curate him out of my experience~ when watching races. but i don’t have to try on tumblr. you’re not all posting pictures of him at the circuits. he doesn’t have thousands and thousands of fans persistently defending him. you all talk shit about him, too. he’s “the egg.” he’s the running joke of formula 1. you’ve just decided what mazepin did was unacceptable, but what max did isn’t so bad and the people effected by it are overreacting. there's a history of sanitoriums and asylums and horrific, unimagineable treatment that leaves a paper trail of evidence of the harm of unchecked ableism. in the current incarnation, anti-vaxxers don't care if we die for the crime of going to buy groceries. when we can't hold jobs, many countries, even wealthy ones, at best give us scraps to live on and make us go through long-drawn out processes meant to discourage us from even trying, just to get that. schools often leave neurodivergent kids behind, taking away their opportunities to live full and enriching lives, just for being different. using the slur that max used is not harmless. it's deeply hurtful, and yeah, it leaves us angry. if you can’t respect that, if you expect us to be quiet to make you more comfortable, please acknowledge your ableism.

Like, I interpreted it like a sort of fanservice or something like that, and as a member of the lgbtqa+ community i didn't get offended

Aight okay so. Let’s go. Really this is a throw away line that it’s isn’t a big deal. In fact I would probably say it isn’t any deal at all. McLaren and Mercedes are the only teams on the grid that actually talk about diversity and inclusion, so in no way am I calling mcalren homophobic or whatever.

I’m gonna throw this under a read more because it got long, and also huge tw for homophobia in f1. Like, don’t read this and let it ruin your day please 🧡

That throw away line “Romance? Some would say so” made me physically wince but it’s taken me some time to realise exactly why. If they had said that last year I would be giggling and completely on board with the whole “some would say they are dating 😏🥺” thing. But this year has been different. Not just there being less carlando content (because of covid but also landos trying to be more professional which I totally get) but also the whole we race as one thing. Just f1 announcing that fake inclusivity bullshit really highlighted just how homophobic f1 is.

Usually I try to ignore that aspect but in response to We Race As One there was so much blatant direct homophobia constantly for like three weeks straight- during pride month - and no one even mentioned it. No one team released a statement or social media admin or even a presenter. Nothing. And the movement didn’t even mention the lgbt community anyways.

And that’s kind of ruined my whole experience of shipping in f1. I’m constantly reminded that I’m not welcome in this sport. Tumblr is literally the only place where I can say the phrase “be gay drive fast” and not get assaulted for it.

In no way am I focusing on this line in a stupid puppet show but it’s the whole of f1s treatment towards Carlos and Landos friendship over both years that pisses me off. F1 knows that Lando has brought in a whole new type of fans.

There’s now this huge focus on non-racing and friendship between the drivers, and people have this weird thing where guys can’t be friends without it being a “bromance”. Which really is just a term ppl use so they can laugh at “ these guys care about eachother like couples do haha that’s so gay”.

F1 hates admitting that a driver could actually be gay so they do all these crappy “mr and mr” interviews or telling their “love story” with heart slide transitions and cheesy romance music. They make them ask each other stupid questions like “are we friends or something more”, guess whether the other sleeps in boxers or naked, and say shit like “romance? Some would say”.

It’s a way for f1 to get points from the lgbt community for being ““progressive”” but without pissing the bigots off because there’s still a “haha that’s so gay” element. That’s an approach that many companies take not just f1

look I’m glad that we’ve gotten past the stage where people would get butthurt about rpf and maybe I should be glad that theyre doing a “fan service” but like. guys. I hate using the term queer baiting when it’s about two real life people with actual opions on eachother but. It hurts that f1 will joke about shit like this but have such a toxic environment that there has never been an openly gay f1 driver. Because people are terrified about what would happen. Not just treatment from fans, but also the team could easily lose huge sponsors and we fucking race in countries where being gay is literally a crime.

and look I’m not even saying f1 should stop doing these “haha bromance that’s so gay” jokes but like, at least try to improve the blatant homophobia that surrounds this sport. I know that right now we are focusing on racism and lord knows that the general public can’t focus on more than one issue at a time. But it’s annoying that f1 will use us for the laughs but then disappear when it really matters

I‘m so tired of everyone around here and on twitter babying Daniel … I used to like him but his fanbase is just awful, they can’t take a joke and they act like F1 owns him the championship. Bestie, he isn’t doing good right now and yes, he‘s still adjusting and he‘ll likely come back stronger in the 2nd half of the season but still, if I have to see one more post crying about him I will riot! (Also the amount of hate I‘ve seen people receive last season for saying Lando and Daniel WONT be besties and for saying Daniel won’t easily beat Lando … now here we are and they were right)

Personally speaking, I have not seen many posts trying to excuse his driving (maybe I follow the right people lmao). He is in a bit of a poor form but it is to be expected. I feel like people forgot the first half of his season with Renault? He really came alive and got his shit together towards the end of his first season (Hulkie+Dan, my himbo beloveds)/second season with them.

I think Dan needs more time to understand the team, the car, his spaz of a teammate etc.

That being said, and this is my very own personal opinion, I am having a grand old time seeing Lando stans vs Daniel stans constantly nitpicking and analyzing every single word these two say, trying to pit the drivers against each other. If freaking hilarious ngl.

I do agree with you, sometimes the fanbase can ruin the perception of a driver/team/etc. - personally I see it with myself and Lando Norris. That being said, some of my closest besties on here are Lando stans and we get along like a house on fire despite having wildly different tastes (minus the daily bullying lmao). I think, in the end, the onus of creating a good fan experience [on whatever SM platform you use] is down to you by blacklisting/unfollowing/blocking etc. those who upset you.

Non f1 related - just saw that your last rabbit hole was the hunger games and honestly same!! I preordered the book last year (yes I loved thg that much) and actually really enjoyed it!! How are you finding it??

aaah I was a huge fan back in the day too, but when the book came out last year I was almost a bit scared to read it because I was afraid it would ruin my experience. it hasn’t done that though, because I love it!! I have a lot to say, which I will put under the read more. so for anyone that’s reading this right now, under the read more there will be major spoilers for the latest Hunger Games book: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

things I love: 1. just how it explains so much about why Snow is the way he is and why he looks at Katniss a certain way. everything connects so incredibly well and it continues to blow my mind. I wouldn’t say I feel for Snow right now, but I do understand his hatred for Katniss more. I saw some people saying the book was too slow-paced and boring for them, but I didn’t experience it like that at all. I think it’s up to the readers to pick up on the small details that connect Lucy Gray to Katniss and while I understand some things may go over some people’s heads, I think the bigger fans will pick up on them. for example: I think the reference to The Hanging Tree (Are you, are you, coming to the tree? They strung up a man, they say who murdered three) went over a lot of people’s heads. 2. the storytelling: amazing stunning beautiful never been done before gorgeous never the same and all those things. everything is so well described that I actually feel like I’m right there (even though I would very much not like to be there) and it really makes me sympathize with some of the characters or even get annoyed with some of them. just stunning. 3. I love reading about the history of Panem and getting a more insight look on how things are in the Capitol, and especially what things were like before the first ever book. it’s so clear, yet strange, how the people in the Capitol are so disconnected from the people they supposedly hate.

things I dislike: 1. it’s just a bit... obvious at times. like there’s an explosion in the arena and of course Snow survives, he gets a tribute from district 12 and of course through some miracle she wins, and of course they fall in love. it honestly reads a bit like a fanfiction sometimes and while I don’t hate that, it’s a bit obvious at times and does make me roll my eyes at some lines. 2. this is a very specific thing and didn’t necessarily ruin the book for me, but just annoyed me at times: I DON’T like cliffhangers at the end of every chapter!! it’s mostly because I like to read from chapter to chapter and then put the book down for a bit, like I assume most people do, and I don’t want eeevery chapter to end with a cliffhanger. I think the action and shock should be preserved for in the chapter, instead of trying to shock the readers with some sort of plot twist at the end of a chapter every single time. this is just a minor thing though, it didn’t ruin the book for me!!

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting the book and think they are being asked to sympathize with Snow, while I think the author wants us to understand what kind of villain he really is. like I said, I think some of the things in the book will go over some people’s heads and that’s why they dislike it. not me though, I absolutely love it and would give it 4 stars!! this got incredibly long, so I’ll stop for now. have a good day! 🧡

Anon4m What are your thoughts on the toxicity that seems to surround women fans of F1? The accusations that they know less and only care for a driver's looks. Also, is it as prevalent in Formula E, from your experience?

I could literally write a book on this. Someone should commission me to write a book on this. Women's fandom has always been taken less seriously - for instance, when the Beatles were classed as a band for screaming girls, no one would have heartily defended their work but when men started writing about it, it became A Whole Revolutionary Thing.

As such, women - especially in large numbers - liking anything has been assumed to degrade it, that literally 'girls are ruining it' and that women's appreciation for something must be less based on anything sincere or genuine. As though a crush isn't sincere and genuine in the first place - or as though men could never have them (the 'no-homo' element of the fear of women's fandom is massive and oppressive to men as well) or as though women walk round spellbound by any man they see doing something they're watching.

What I would like to say is: girls, if you literally only get into F1 because you want to plaster your walls in Charles Leclerc posters and chat to your friends about how dreamy he is THAT'S ABSOLUTELY FINE AND GOOD. Believe me, many of the men are only here because they think Ayrton Senna or Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc or Nigel Mansell or whatever is soooo cool and they want to own all the models of his cars and the helmets and wear his team shirt and there's no difference.

Women often do desire male sports stars - not least because that's what you're supposed to do with famous, cool men, rather than aspire to be them. That's not how men are displayed to women from an early age. But the guy who wants to be Verstappen is just as valid as you wanting in some complex way to make out with him, it's just the sense of massive fandom energy that makes your heart beat faster at the idea of involvement.

I'm running out of characters to write in. [curiouscat has a limit] But it's intensely toxic - people honestly think I've clawed my way in to Formula E because I fancy JEV or something, rather than because I threw everything I had at it and worked myself to multiple breakdowns.

Every fangirl I know knows more about the rules, the tech and the art of racing than most male fans. Because they get tested at every turn, to prove they're a 'real fan.' Formula E is MUCH better, much more diverse and open and lacks the class structure of F1 but well, teenage boys have tried to explain it to me in the media centre.

The fear of straight men of having their fandoms invalidated, rather than expanded, is absurd. Women were some of the first and most ardent F1 fans - from timing to engineering support to, yes, the drivers; seeing as most of them were married to one.

That "cool," high-powererd motorsport perpetuates the type of embarrassing fandom stereotype even the nerd conventions I used to work on had seriously worked to address, from the top, tells you what you need to know in terms of whose egos are being massaged in the belief it is 'for boys.
