Now, regarding reader's gender, that's a very good question!

My first language isn't English - I'm Brazilian, so BR Portuguese is my default and I've written A LOT in Portuguese. Interestingly enough, I think I spent so much time writing here, I'm currently writing better in English than in Portuguese *puts on fool hat*

In Portuguese, gender is a big deal, 'cause all our words are gendered. We don't have neutrals like "they" in English or "das" in German - so we kinda always have to pic a gender for characters.

I have some non-binary characters in other personal original stories and they are a PAIN to write in Portuguese, 'cause I don't have neutral pronouns/ways to call them T-T

When I used to write for PT-BR fanfic websites, my default has always been female reader character in 3d person - it's only when I moved to tumblr I started using "you", which was a VERY weird transition at the start, and I got hit with "oh my the person reading might not be female/identify as female".

I always used female as default because, not gonna lie, I used my name as default for 3d person, or friends names, and then I scripted/htmld the fic so in the website I posted people could change the characters names to their own names/own characters without the whole you/y/n thing.

The majority of people reading in this website I posted are women - and in my country, fanfiction has always been perceived like a female thing. So I never really thought much about that.

It's only when I moved here I found a more diverse set of readers. In English, gender isn't taken for granted, because you do have neutrals. And I kept thinking "what if people that identify with other genders want to read my work? What if they like it too?" and I decided to go as neutral as I can for the reader!

Granted, sometimes I slip up and you'll catch me referencing the reader as she/her - it's something I always have to keep an eye on because of my own language.

When I'm writing, I think more of a mature character rather than their gender, to be honest. It's a pet peeve of mine, but I'm always fuming that most female reader characters end up as damsels in distress or acting extremely childish, girly, cute or even bratty just because of their gender and I hate it.

I try to think more in a way that Dante and Vergil wouldn't be attracted to that - they're older, mature men and they want something else in a relationship. They want a partner and someone who can stand on their own, and power through hardships. Femininity is ok, but being a childish 12 y/o isn't really attractive to older men like them.

I'm turning 30 this year, hear the voice of wiseness HAHAHA

That made me have another sort of default when I'm writing. Now I'm much more focused on personality and what fits the characters rather than gender and all that - because I think sometimes we get too "blind" on what is expected from that gender rather than developing a good character.

A few examples I like:

(Below the cut, examples on female characters and my impressions, I got too excited and it turned into something huge, apologies xD)

Integra Hellsing, from the Hellsing manga and OVA, is an exceptional woman written without her gender being the first thing you get from her character. Appearance wise, she is very androginous, but her character per se, she is still a woman, feminine and all, but powerful as hell, strong-willed, with harsh decisions to make, imperfections and self-doubt, holding the most powerful vampire in the world on a leash. She has a ton of responsibilities and she doesn't have to be a sexy tomboy or a, again, sexy girlboss to pull that off. She is posh, regal and graceful even, but she smokes, swears and commands like a man... or like the woman she is. Which is brilliant. Love her absurdly.

Plus, she literally has te title of Sir Integra. Love this powerhouse of a woman.

Ellen Ripley, from Alien, was a character written primarily regardless her gender - and I think this is fabulous! They had the character done and said "ok, both a man and a woman can play this character" - when it came to casting, they decided Sigourney Weaver was the best choice. Ripley is smart, fast thinking and a survivor at heart, but she also shows fear and horror when she is put up against the alien. Her character was developed before her gender, and that makes her so amazing - by the second movie, Aliens, she is a powerhouse as well, hell-bent on saving people and not allowing anyone to get hurt by those dreadful creatures again. And we learn she had a daughter! That makes her grow attached to Newt, but not in that ~motherly overattached dependant~ way most people think women do, but in a protective "I'm gonna be your parent" way that all humans grow attached to children!

That's why the 3rd Alien movie is so awful to me. It's the only movie that puts her gender before her character: suddenly she is having sex with everyone and some guys try to rape her because suddenly she is seen as an object rather than a person.

I mean I always shipped her with Hicks and there isn't a SINGLE sexual thing between them rather than some looks of admiration from him and THAT hits harder than any of that cheap sexual thing from the 3rd movie in my ace opinion xD

Fun fact, we both share the fact we're INTPs xD

Now, another one I like, is Yennefer of Vengerberg - and she is written with everything of her gender taken into account. Why am I mentioning her, then?

I'm taking the books and games as reference here, but Yennefer is stunningly beautiful. She could be a perfect femme fatale, and she starts like that, but as you get into her character, there is a character there. And it goes so much further than just being a sexy woman who wants to girlboss and overpower men. Yen is traumatized and has traded so much of herself to become this powerhouse she is. No one likes to mess with her, and those who reduce her to being an woman-object suffer the consequences. She realized she wanted to have children when it was only too late and she is so freaking powerful she will go LENGTHS to make it happen.

It doesn't, but she gets Ciri in her life. Apart from that, Yen is a sorcerer and she does politics: when Geralt doesn't want that and they start disagreeing on their points of view/what kinds of life they want to lead, she is adamant on not leaving her freedom and being afraid on losing her independence to tie herself to someone else. So Yennefer remains as this mysterious, femme fatale of a woman, bewitching and breaking so many hearts because she will never abandon her freedom, her goals and her dreams for a relationship. And that, I think it's beautiful on a female character. Well done and something that ends up becoming a fatal flaw of hers - because, again, it isn't based on "I won't bow to patriarchy" it's based on "I can trust only in myself and I won't leave my fate in anyone's hands but my own", it has nothing to do with her being a woman. It has to do with her own will and who she wants to be.

She could be written as a man and it would work as well in my opinion mind you, you're welcome to disagree

Plastic Skies of Betrayal - Model 12: F-5E Tiger II “Area 88″

So this model is a little special. I know I said the same thing about the last one, but while the Raptor build came with a heavy dose of anxiety and frustrations, the next build turned out to be a nice planetary alignment of materials and people all coming together in an incredibly rewarding project. Just like the Raptor, however, talking about it involves talking about other things first. In this case, a late 70s manga that set up camp in my brain months ago and refuses to leave.

Have you ever heard of AREA 88? If not, you’re about to.

So there’s this plane called the Northrop F-5 Tiger II, which I’d actually never heard about until I played Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. That game famously starts you off in an F-5 and locks you there for the first four or five missions, so I became pretty well-acquainted with this tiny little fighter. Some people might recognize its shape from the original TOP GUN, where it was painted black and used as a stand-in for Russian MiG planes, but on the other side of the Pacific, a lot of people know it best as one of the signature planes of one Shin Kazama.

Shin is the protagonist of AREA 88, a manga by Kaoru Shintani that started all the way in 1979 and ended in 1986, the same year TOP GUN came out. I first heard about it while looking at some model kits, and since I was (and in a lot of ways still am) elbows deep in fighter jets at that time, I started to dig a bit deeper. Three OVAs and half a manga series later, I was absolutely hooked. The air combat is fantastic and the manga pulls a bunch of incredible visual tricks to render it, but it’s the intense melodrama of the characters that really kept me in. It’s a tremendously engaging, compelling and interesting series from every angle. And funny enough, I’d actually seen it once, over a decade ago. Just not as a manga or as an anime.

As it turns out, AREA 88 had a videogame for the SNES that had been brought to the West as “UN SQUADRON”, and I had actually played it back when my computer was so underpowered that all I could play were emulated retro games. Running into the game’s source material again in the midst of a wild craze triggered by another videogame was a strange but fun little return, and along with my growing obsession with said source material, cemented my decision to make my next model AREA 88-themed. And the universe seemed more than happy to provide.

My current favorite hobby shop turned out to have a 1/72 Tiger II model for a very nice price, made by the same company that made the F-16 model I’d built some months ago. To make things even better, it was also the exact same kit I’d already seen a much better hobbyist than me turn into Shin’s plane and upload tons of great reference pics online. All I really needed would be the decals, so I asked the shop’s owner if he could get me in touch with someone who prints customs decals. He obliged, although in the end that wouldn’t be necessary.

The build itself was pretty sweet, although not without its hiccups. There was no family drama to distract me this time nor lingering feelings of guilt. Even money was no longer an object. Feeling more relaxed than usual, I took my time with it, and challenged myself to add a few extra touches. For example, taking the thinnest brush I have, dipping it in red paint and giving the stick a little button,

The other thing I also tried out was, for the first time, primer. Yes, I’m a dummy. Yes, I’m not sure how I got this far without it. But I’d never actually needed primer before until disaster struck and some patches of paint began to fall out of my Raptor model kit. I’m still not sure what caused it exactly, but priming models from now on seemed like the smartest solution. As we say down here, better to prevent than mend.

That said, I don’t think I fully understand this whole priming thing yet. Without an airbrush or a spray can, I just used a brush to coat the kit with it, right off the bottle. I’m not sure if this is a good way to use it but at least it smelled really good. And not in a thick chemical kind of way, just genuinely sweet smell. But anyway...

Painting had to be paused for a moment after I let a friend borrow my white paint, so for a week or so only the Tiger’s tail saw any paint, but once I had everything back things moved pretty quickly. I was a bit worried about the blue part since masking tape and me don’t see eye to eye. Still, it worked out alright, and any imperfections were quickly corrected with a bit more paint. Which is something I really appreciate in model-making: if you mess up, you can usually paint over it. Usually.

Like with the stick, I took the time to paint a few other little details like the position lights. Decals and weathering also worked out pretty well, thanks to HobbyBoss’ decals being really good and the plane itself being really small compared to the last couple ones I’d made.

The other thing I felt quite proud of was my paintjob on the transparent parts. I’d been scared of canopies for so long that a bunch of my first models are still purely transparent there, but thanks to a couple of really comfortable brushes and some experience, I’m feeling far more confident about it nowadays. Plus, I’d fallen in love with this shade of blue, so adding more to the plane was its own reward. And speaking of canopies, another little touch I’ve been adding to the planes since the Raptor is to give the whole thing a coat of matte varnish, but then use gloss for the canopy, giving it a nice shiny finish. Although that led to a moment of anxiety when a drop of varnish went inside the canopy and stayed there, giving it a very ugly thick white curve that I feared was permanent. In the end I went to sleep and woke up to the varnish having completely dried out and disappeared, so that’s a good life lesson: sometimes you just need to sleep things off.

So with that and a combination of black and gray panel liner, the Tiger was done! ... or was it? After all, this wasn’t just any Tiger, this is supposed to be Shin Kazama’s Tiger. It was still missing a couple of very important touches. But for the time being I was pretty damn satisfied with the model, top to bottom.

A couple of weeks passed and I never really got around to contacting the guy I’d been recommended, but then I ran into something interesting: a local hobbyist in our local version of eBay was offering custom display bases for model kits at a pretty affordable price. I’d been thinking about getting or even making a humble display base for pictures and stuff, but when I noticed that he was offering custom touches, an idea came to my mind. And that idea lead to a frankly pretty amazing moment of pure human connection.

So after I got paid, I reached out to the guy and asked about getting a 1/72 base made with some extra touches. First, he asked for a picture of the model I wanted to go on the base, so he could take some measurements. Feeling pretty proud of my work so far, I sent him a picture...

... and I swear, the very first thing he said was, and I quote:

“Oh, is that Shin Kazama’s F-5 from Area 88?”

To which my answer was “Ok, that simplifies matters.”

On top of immediately understanding the assignment, new friend even offered to throw in a little extra: a Shin Kazama scale figurine, free of charge. I said yes, of course, ‘cause momma didn’t raise the kind of fool that says no to free stuff, and also asked if he knew anyone who could help me with the decals. As it turned out, he did know a guy. And the combined efforts of three different people living nearly 400 miles away from each other all came together to make something that makes me incredibly happy.

Like everything else I’ve made so far, it’s not perfect. The tail decal couldn’t be easily printed in transparent paper, so it was printed on blue paper that’s ever so slightly a different shade than the one on the plane. But the results are still more than good enough for me.

In the end, this kit turned out to be a very welcome de-stresser. The difficult parts turned out to be a lot less difficult than it seemed, and the base and decals story is something I know I’ll always talk about with a smile on my face. In a hobby that’s usually pretty solitary, that little bit of long-distance camaraderie went a long way. And left me a very nice base for all future projects.

so there are a few big chunks of story so far, fortunately one of my special interests is taxonomy and i have a fetish for project management [1].

basically two main eras:

- a youngish high school + summer camp setting [late teens/twenties]. most of the aesthetics here are from that part of the setting, which has a lot of ~magical stuff beyond the heart of camp.

and! an undead hospital drama, including Nurse Jim from the camp health centre.

most of the events concerning the aesthetics described in this paper [I'll lean into it, eh] take place at the summer camp through Nurse Jim's adventures leading camping trips with Mick.[5]

[5] tbh, that does kinda let me fold those two jobs into one - it seems pretty cromulent that the health centre would assign someone like Nurse Jim on long trips

Like the characters realize that Ludociel and Nerobasta are not all there made out to be eventually, but we can see just from the types of abilities the druids (aka those closest to and led by the goddess race) possess

Early S6 Scully's IVF round is successful-- so successful she is expecting twins. Diana, however, keeps pulling Mulder away from their growing family; and it's not until a near fatal incident that gives him the guts to permanently glues himself to their sides.

Mulder finally tells her about the ova; and the two of them work through his indecision before eventually agreeing and outreaching to a surrogate under pseudonyms. The mytharc, as always, tries to tamper with their happiness; but TLG, Skinner, Maggie, and even Bill Scully give them unflinching support.

Mulder and Scully are married; and their IVF success sends him into compounding anxiety bolstered by unrealistic expectations of himself. This culminates during Scully's C-section when he passes out; but, luckily, it's all swept aside when their daughter turns out to be a daddy's girl.

I have a particular affection for the ways non-cultural designs & choices can create cultural artifacts. Anyone remember ToHeart2?

An ero visual novel coming in at the tail end of the VN era Tokimeki Memorial ushered in 1994 and Kanon crystalized in 1999, it was released in December of 2004 and was the ‘it’ game of its genre for the next year. It got an anime release in 2005, spin-off games, OVA’s, drama CD’s, the works. It was really big at Comiket in the next year, selling ‘image CDs’ of risque art, promotional manga, and a…car billboard?

ToHeart2 did not last though. Its known among visual novel fans for sure, but it's currently ranked #609th on Visual Novel Database in popularity - totally respectable, but no one is recommending it today as the “oh you gotta play this” game and if you aren’t into visual novels it is not coming up in your day-to-day anime-fandom conversations the way Clannad or Doki Doki Literature Club is. It had its era and the fandom moved on, like almost any other property.

But I bet way more people have encountered it than they know, because something else was released pretty much right after ToHeart2 was, in May of 2005 to be precise:

Oh yeah, this is that kind of essay. Danbooru is the original ‘successor’ to the 2ch-style imageboards that was art-first, non-hierarchical, and easily searchable, making it absolutely perfect for porn. The style quickly swept the competition and for a while Danbooru, and its architecture-clones like Gelbooru, ruled the hentai roost on the internet. If it's the year 2010 and you want some pics of Asuka in a school uniform stepping on you, Danbooru was your very first stop.

How you found those pictures is important here; Danbooru is 99% of the time used via searching for tags. Those who don’t have an account - aka most users - can only search by two tags, so you do the best you can; to take the above prompt you go “soryuu_asuka_langley stepped_on” and bam:

Only 4 results, are you kidding me?? Jesus get it together ero artists, some low hanging fruit here. Let's go with something more popular:

There we go, “red_hair school_uniform”, that is more like it. Okay, so sometimes you want Sailor Pluto + Zettai Ryuoiki or bust and you are gonna get what you are gonna get with those search terms, but other times you are exploring, you wanna see what you will find, any red-head will do, and you get this absolute sea of results. What are your options for navigating it?

Pretty…basic, right? And you can’t easily narrow down your search, you only get two search terms. So you do what comes natural, you look at each page, select out images you like, and hit next. But that is…a lot of pages, you aren’t going to read them all.

A funny thing about UI design is that if a button exists, humans are going to press it. We are just inherently curious, we want to try things. And this UI essentially gives us three buttons: “First”, “Next”, and ….“Last”, in this case Page 43654. So as you are building your stache of auburn-topped white button-ups, you are gonna click Page 1, then Page 2, then Page 3…and at some point your curiosity will get the better of you, and you are gonna click Last

And the posts are organized chronologically by order of submission. You get it now, right?

For large searches, which the two-tag cap encourages users to do, Danbooru’s UI gives you the option of showing you the *latest* posts…and the *first posts ever submitted to Danbooru*. If its 2013 you are not gonna stumble on anything from 2008 without actively looking for it, but there is always a button flashing in your face to show you every post from 2005.

When ToHeart2 was the most popular ero game around.

As you can bet Danbooru on opening day was flooded with ToHeart2 images. It generated so much content applicable to this site concept too - it's a split path harem game! Look at these girls:

You got your big titty red-head, white-haired soft kuudere, your lolis your genki’s, this is the OVA so it isn’t even all of them; option coverage is the point of these games. And it clocks in at, help me out here VNDB…

55 hours are you fucking kidding me?! This is the Anna Karenina of visual novels, this work is someone’s magnum opus, my god. Point is it had a lot of art - and you add in the anime, the Comiket CD’s, the promotionals, the manga, the doujin, its a lot. Wait, I don’t have to guess:

Its 6.2k images worth of ecchi art as of today. Every single ‘basic category’ search term people would commonly use had some ToHeart2 character in it, stored at the back of the history log. Far beyond its popularity as a visual novel, due to the inherent UI design of the site, anime fans got all the ToHeart2 porn they could handle just organically. And as time went on the ‘gap’ in between today and 2005 grew, cementing this little cultural artifact in place. Obviously other works from 2005 got similarly cemented, ToHeart2 is just the most prominent one to me.

I love how some of them have their context just buried in there too, like this one I pulled from the site:

This is the cover of a Comiket 70 doujin collection - actually a mix of characters, not ToHeart2-specific - by doujin group Spread-Pink, a talented group; something the median non-Japanese searcher saving this to their hard drive would have no clue about. Here is a link to the full doujin, it has Haruhi SOS Brigade propaganda, absolutely choice. This is of course a trait inherent to a lot of the older art on the internet - so much of it was taken, often without attribution or with edits, from random professional-adjacent works and repurposed into the context the internet needed it to be. Today the internet of Japan & the West is way more merged, and tracing back an image is way easier, but in the early days it was anarchy, and so early Danbooru is full of that, in comparison to the modern uploads.

And yes I cropped the image here, but it was for sizing purposes I swear, don’t judge me, the full one is in the link!

I do have one more reveal before I wrap this up, however - I have been lying to you. I doctored that Danbooru screenshot up there, because that isn’t how the search in Danbooru looks today. It looks like this:

Yup, the Last Page button is gone. I pulled a screenshot from the Wayback Machine for the edit, I am not sure when it vanished but I think it is sometime around 2015? Now this phenomenon lasted longer than that - at that time Danbooru clone Gelbooru had grown to higher popularity due to ease of use but imported all of Danbooru’s content including its chronology meta-data when it was made in 2007, and it kept the button. Gelbooru grew to such sizes that in the late 2010’s however, if you try to hit Last Page on a large enough search, you get:

Alas, a pagination cut-off (unless you upgrade your account, which is like paying for WinRAR).

So this isn’t a present cultural artifact, but a past one - a generation of internet users for a decade+ had privileged access to the ToHeart2 Hentai Collection, but in the 2020’s it's gone now, lowered down to equality with every other historical work. Alas ToHeart2, your reign was brief but beautiful, and may we all hope for an elysian future where Danbooru re-implements the Last Page button and your rule is restored.

as a hayato fan, i guess that the origin of this infamous ugly pic is based on a page in Getter Robo go, and it crooked simply cuz the all quality of Change Getter Robo since vol.4 degraded. so hayato's jaw was fixed once though, today even on Super Robot series, their faces're more uglily crooked again ( to make nearer to ova, not to original scene perhaps?) i'm afraid that bandai-namco staffs don't read and check the canon anymore (like other bandai-namco staffs leaving wrong bios of the chars they borrowed from other companies in Tekken7)

MP100 III Crunchyroll Premier

For all my Tumblr peeps who want a glimpse of what was at the premier, I have them below the cut (no pics or videos were taken (thank goodness) so this is only text except for the exclusive poster) (disclaimer: I wasn’t there, so these are just things I’ve heard/read since the premier)

This contains very little plot, and mostly what was revealed at the Q&A, the ED, and some things speculated by fans.

Very normal episodes. Staff said the real “meat” of the story begins in EP3.

Reigen is as handsome as ever (bless you BONES). Apparently lots of shiny scenes with him.

ED3 is completely glass animation and mirrors ED1 thematically (ED1 was Reigen POV and ED3 is Shigeo POV).

After EP2, there was a message from ONE and the staff.

ONE’s message was thanking the fans, saying how he couldn’t be happier with out S3 turned out, and to look forward to more.

Q&A afterwards with BONES President, Makahito Minami

He said all the animation in S3 is hand drawn. No CGI.

He was asked what his favorite arc or moment was and he said characters with butt chins and in S2 when Mob puts Emi’s novel back together.

He was also asked if he could be any character which one he’d be and he immediately said Musashi Gouda.

Apparently, something was said along the lines of “staff animators were sticking to the anime from S1 - S3 and onwards.” (REIGEN manga movie? Beach OVA???)

There is an official fan book coming out during S3 (more content??? PLEASE?!?!?)

Hm honestly I liked Olou best from his Squad. He was weird, but funny and very capable. Petra just felt like the quota girl. Because Isayama needed a nice, warm person to welcome Eren and we all know women are always do empathic and nice 🙃 she felt completely useless in battle. Despite her good stats she wasn’t able to even follow Olou‘s simple order. I was very disappointed and could really have gone without her at all especially. I’d rather known Gunther and Eld better. Especially Gunther. It was so sad he didn’t even die in battle really but was cowardly backstabbed 😢

And the pic turned out wonderful 💓

i liked oluo too djfjsjdjgj especially after learning his real accent from the ilse ova fkenwkfkrkwkfktjw and how he mimics levi fr. he’s annoying but in a skrunkly way if that makes sense

i rly rly rly like petra but. maybe this is controversial to say, but her personality rly felt made to be Levi’s Love Interest. It’s more than she idolized him a lot, it’s that she can’t stand on her own without levi as a character. she’s this warm empathetic figure like u said to the point where she’s almost a foil of him. it feels like she’s there for the audience to learn/think about levi. it’s like she’s not her own character, rather a caricature of an antithesis to fucking levi.

eh also this might be a reach but, she’s shorter than him which in traditional western culture(?), is the ideal trait where the woman is shorter, shes “motherly”, etc etc. it seems too convenient to be (to me).

if only she was fleshed out more tbh (just like all of them lol).

Continuing on with what the previous anon said another good example is FMA. We got two versions of the story but Brotherhood is the one who is like the canon manga. There's also Akame ga kill. The anime is completely different to how the manga went. Also, probably been mentioned before but DB GT the way it went into being and Akira Toriyama's involvement went practically the same way as RT and HnY. Adding to that. While GT was received with mixed reviews the breaking point for Tori was the live action movie, so different from his source material it was—that he started writing new content which led to Super, (at the same since some people like GT he made it a different universe timeline, along DB Heroes anime and the XenoVerse games) with Future Trunks helping connect all. Also a friend of mine mentioned once that a character in Chobits from CLAMP ended up with x character in one version but in a ova I think they end with another. Do you have that one picture of galo where he’s kinda like -_- and looking at a phone or something I think? I wanted to reference it for a comic I’m doing but I can’t find it :(

hmm i have plenty of -_- galo’s but i can’t think what specific one this would b referring to? do u remember if it’s a screencap (maybe his ova when he’s w lucia?), storyboard, official/promo art, super mecha champions galo, etc? here’s some -_-‘ing galo’s from the movie if any of them help at all lol (hes not looking at a phone in these and doesn’t rly have the -_- vibe exactly in some of em but i can’t think of which that would be). they just r like pics i have favorited on my phone so there’s a lot of -_- galo’s i don’t have in this folder
