An immediate arms embargo on Israel. When I met Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf last month and he unequivocally backed such a move, the case was already overwhelming. Yet this week, the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron doubled down – even as Gaza is razed from the face of the earth, the position was “unchanged”. It should not take the spilling of Western blood to make this point – given the mass slaughter endured by the Palestinian people, including more than 200 aid workers – but even the Israeli military killing three Britons working with World Central Kitchen hasn’t shifted the Government’s position. You can only imagine what would have happened if, say, Iran had blown up an aid convoy in similar circumstances. According to the Campaign Against Arms Trade, the seven aid workers were killed by a Hermes 450 drone, which is powered by a UK-made R902(W) Wankel Engine. That a leaked recording of senior Tory MP Alicia Kearns – the chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee – made clear that the Government had received legal advice that Israel is violating international humanitarian law, clear to anyone at this point who isn’t either deceitful or living in a parallel universe. That would necessitate stopping arms sales, as well as the sharing of intelligence. Yet the British government remains determined to continue its complicity with one of the great crimes of our age. […] The Israeli investigation was an absurd whitewash, suggesting a military which describes itself as amongst the world’s most advanced made a “grave mistake” by exterminating the convoy in these circumstances. Well, it gets so much worse. A fascinating piece of investigative journalism in The Telegraph – not words you often read me type – has a sensational finding. The most senior commander in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) dismissed for his role in the attack is a hard-line settler in the West Bank who, in an open letter signed in January, demanded Gaza was deprived of aid. It demanded the Israeli War Cabinet and the IDF chief of staff “do everything in your power” to prevent “humanitarian supplies and the operation of hospitals inside Gaza City”. Here’s another astonishing detail: the retired military officer who led the investigation into the strike is the CEO of the defence firm that makes the drone missiles used in the strike.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #299
Fri Feb 4 2022 [11:31 PM] Wack'd: We open on typical Johnny/Ben prank war nonsense [11:31 PM] Bocaj: Ben must be feeling better? [11:31 PM] Wack'd: Except Johnny didn't do a prank [11:32 PM] Wack'd: He said something innocuous that Ben took as a joke at his expense [11:32 PM] Bocaj: Sooooo no [11:32 PM] Umbramatic: oh no [11:32 PM] Wack'd: We do not find out what it was just yet but the issue's called "The Best Man" so I can hazard a guess [11:33 PM] Wack'd: Ben storms out of 4 Freedoms, shoving his way through the media folks there for the grand opening, including Peter Parker, who somehow manages to move fast enough to avoid Ben's wrath [11:33 PM] Wack'd: Dunno how that Parker kid does it [11:33 PM] Umbramatic: holy shit [11:34 PM] Wack'd: Yeah Johnny sheepishly admits he asked Ben to be the best man because he thought Ben was cooling off [11:34 PM] Wack'd: Jen calls him a moron and then goes after Ben [11:35 PM] maxwellelvis: Where's that facepalm GIF? [11:36 PM] Wack'd: HEY BOCAJ THAT THING YOU KEEP MENTIONING GOT RETCONNED [11:36 PM] Bocaj: Alicia's appearance? [11:36 PM] Bocaj: And similarity to Sue? [11:36 PM] Wack'd: Ben flashes back to his first time meeting Alicia and mentions that she only looked like Sue through the magic of makeup [11:36 PM] Bocaj: Thank goodness for the magic of retroactive continuity [11:37 PM] Wack'd: Ben does mention that he felt like he was taking advantage of Alicia because of the age gap Roger Stern nooooo whyyyyyy [11:37 PM] Bocaj: Siiiiigh [11:38 PM] maxwellelvis: Boy, can you tell this comic is written by Boomers, or can you? [11:38 PM] Wack'd: Jen pulls Ben out of the bar he's sulking in and offers to take him to a different, better bar [11:39 PM] Wack'd: This feels remarkably post-9/11 for something published in 1987. What war were we in then I wonder
Tumblr media
[11:40 PM] Umbramatic: …huh [11:41 PM] Wack'd: Johnny leaves the stage early to find Ben. And who does he run into but his old pal Spider-Man! Fancy seeing him here [11:43 PM] maxwellelvis: In 1987? That'd be the Iran-Contra Scandal. [11:44 PM] Wack'd: Ooof [11:44 PM] Wack'd: Johnny and Spidey stop on a roof and Johnny explains the series of decisions that led him here. Spidey calls him a moron and is also just plain surprised he's getting married [11:44 PM] maxwellelvis: Plus the continued CIA actions in Nicaragua and Angola [11:44 PM] Bocaj: "You're getting married? But you haven't even proposed to me, you goof" [11:45 PM] Wack'd: Johnny says he wants a small private wedding and not to let the word out but unfortunately they are like three feet away from an open window and a real snoopy resident who immediately calls the Daily Bugle tipline [11:48 PM] Wack'd: Back with Jen and Ben, Ben keeps recapping his and Alicia's relationship, saying that he felt like since he was afraid to marry her they were stuck in a rut [11:48 PM] Wack'd: And also he had intended to break things off with her when he returned to Earth! Which is true and just makes his whole sorted ordeal even more petty [11:48 PM] maxwellelvis: Ben, honey, you've not seen anything yet, talking of ruts. [11:49 PM] Wack'd: Jen: "Let me get this straight…you decided to quit the F.F. because Alicia broke up with you…before you could break up with her?" [11:49 PM] Wack'd: Jen is right! This is stupid! [11:50 PM] maxwellelvis: "I may not be able to practice law in this state, but it doesn't take a lawyer to see that that's pretty fuckin' dumb, Blue-Eyes." [11:51 PM] Wack'd: Anyway, Ben starts getting real deep into the monstrous self-loathing, saying he has it worse even than Bruce Banner [11:51 PM] Wack'd: And that cheeses Jen right off [11:52 PM] Wack'd: Fight fight fight [11:52 PM] Wack'd: The rumble takes them through a demolition zone. The workers there are thrilled their job is being done for them and start taking bets on the outcome [11:52 PM] maxwellelvis: I'm glad Jen's sticking up for her cousin here, at least. [11:53 PM] Wack'd: Anyway the rumble cheers Ben right up, and it turns out Jen orchestrated this whole thing, right down to picking a bar near a demolition zone [11:54 PM] maxwellelvis: "No need to apologize to us, ma'am! You saved us a day's work AND I made a mint on the side!" [11:55 PM] Wack'd: A happy ending all around (until next time which will not be happy I don't think)
Tumblr media
[11:57 PM] maxwellelvis: What happened to She-Hulk's gloves, and why are her boots red?

The Late, Late Show With James Corden(44세)의 진행자는 이전에 2015년부터 자신이 진행해 온 CBS 토크쇼를 떠나기로 한 "정말 힘든" 결정에 대해 말한 적이 있습니다.

 Parler
Parler is a U.S based news based, micro blogging social networking service app which was launched in August 2018 by its founder John Matze.
It is being ardently promoted by political conservatives in America who tout it as alternative to Twitter which they believe is strifling free speech.
Parler is multilingual just like it's arch rival Twitter, it has it's headquarters situated in Henderson, Nevada US.
Parler currently has about 5 million users world wide, and has been downloaded over 1 million times on the Google play store, it has been touted as the fasted growing microblogging site of 2020.
The promoters of Parler say parler is unique in the sense that it's a commenting platform that's not biased, promotes free speech and solidly focused on protecting users right.
They say that parler enables its users create their own community and enjoy contents and news in real time while applying moderation tools to filter contents, they say it empowers users to control their social media experience and be a verified member of the community.
Leon Rife, a parler user wrote this about parler on the internet;"Super easy to use, whipped right through registration page, so i can't understand how others seems to be having a problem with it. I've been using this app for about a month, as well as Twitter and really enjoy parler as the superior app for content and expression...great app and great platform.
Another parler user, Tom lane said the app is wonderful for open self expression, "if you're looking for a Twitter alternative, this is it..."
The oops about the app especially for Nigerian users is that unlike Twitter, Parler requires your valid means of identification for you to be verified, unverified users may have their experience limited as people who don't like what you posted or commented can label you as a robot which may earn you some unpalatable repercussions.
Can parler displace or even stand neck to neck with Twitter? Only time shall tell
Telegram
Telegram was the massaging app that forced WhatsApp to go into end to end encryption, because that's exactly what telegram say it is all about.

They say they are secure, powerful, reliable, fun filled, simple in use and accessibility, respects users privacy as well as enables secret chats which deletes itself immediately after sending and after reading by the reciever.
Telegram doesn't accept advert and doesn't advertise itself anywhere, despite that, it has 500 million downloads as against whatsapp's 5 billion downloads on the Google play store. it is a 22.92 Mb app as against whatsapp's 23.81 Mb, people prefer smaller apps to larger ones as they strive to conserve space, hence, telegram's increasing popularity.Critics say that telegram's strict encryption fuels and supports the spread of terrorism.
It was developed in 2013 by Russian brothers Nikolai Durov, Pavel Durov who is the chief executive officer CEO, and an entrepreneur Axel Neff.
Telegram has it's legal headquaters in London UK and its operational headquarters in United Arab Emirates.
Telegram has about 400 staff, about 400 million active users. It is presently in the top ten of the most downloaded app of apple and Google app stores.

It's available on Android, IOS, Windows phone, Windows computers, Mac Os, GNU/Linus platforms, in almost all the countries of the world and accessible in 15 different languages.
Telegram was Instrumental in the recent anti government uprising in Iran.
Triller
Triller is owned by the owner of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, it was founded on December 5th,2015, but was retooled, reactivated, reinvigorated and updated on August 5th 2020, in what analysts see as an attempt to rival tiktok.
Triller is a video creation application where an Android phone owner who downloads the app can produce own music videos using the songs that are available in the music library. Triller is a video creation app which also works as a social media platform in various ways.
Thanks to the current situation of tiktok in the face of US president Trump's threat of banning it, Triller is blazing the trails in the hope of catching up with tiktok and even overtaking it.
Triller says it is not seeking to rival tiktok, afterall it is older than tiktok, as it was founded in 2015 while tiktok was founded in 2017, instead it sees itself as the "adult version of tiktok", matured tiktok so to say.
It is available on Android's Google play store, it is 43.93 Mb app as against 58.98Mb making it a darling of users with low end smartphone.
Triller has 120 million downloads as against tiktok's 1 billion downloads, but it's known to have a growth than tiktok.
Trump campaign, snoop Doggy, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Eminem and other celebrators have opened triller accounts as triller continuous to cash in on tiktok's China connection backlash.
Promoters of Triller say that Triller enables users to show off their unique talents.
If you know tiktok and you know Triller, if you see Tiktok you see Triller because Trillion is a copycat with advanced modifications. It remain whether American's Triller can beat China's Tiktok in China's home field of copycating.

The UK’s charity regulator is investigating videos of antisemitic speeches given by former Iranian generals to British students, as well as footage of "death to Israel" chants at the British premises of an Islamic charity.
UK officials probe Iran generals' antisemitic talks to students https://t.co/8GJvEReZt2 — BBC News (World) (@BBCWorld) January 22, 2024
Two of the videos being investigated by the UK’s Charity Commission show talks by members of the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with one of them describing an apocalyptic war with Jews and Holocaust denial.
The videos, which the BBC saw and verified, were recorded in 2020 and 2021 and show three events. Two were live-streamed speeches by former and active commanders of the IRGC, while the other was an in-person event inside the Kanoon Towhid Islamic Center in western London, commemorating Iran’s top military commander, General Qasem Soleimani.
Soleimani was killed in a US air strike in 2020. Chants of "death to Israel" were heard during the in-person event, but it wasn’t clear or known who was saying them. There is also other evidence of an IRGC commander giving online talks to British students, where the commander bragged about his role in training Hamas fighters before the October 7 attacks in Israel that claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Islamic Students Associations of Britain (ISA) and its affiliates promoted the online talks in advance, and these events took place in Kanoon Towhid Islamic Center, which was used as a meeting place. Unlike mainstream Muslim student groups in the UK, the ISA was founded to promote the philosophy and ideology of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s first supreme leader and the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Kanoon Towhid is also owned by the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust, which has already been investigated by the Charity Commission after reports of the event honoring Soleimani, whom the British government sanctioned for his links to terrorism. The commission is investigating the videos seen and verified by the BBC, including one footage of this event.
Orlando Fraser, chairman of the Charity Commission, has previously warned that charities must not "become forums for hate speech" or extremism. The commission has the authority to investigate, sanction, or even close down charities that violate regulations.
This is ridicuously shocking. How does this go under the radar? — Melanie Amini (@TheMelAmini) January 23, 2024
Alicia Kearns, a Conservative MP for Rutland and Melton who also serves as chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee in Parliament, described the speeches as a “brazen act of radicalization," adding that the IRGC should be added to the government’s list of proscribed terrorist groups in the UK, which would make it illegal to be an IRGC member or show support for the IRGC.
In one Instagram Live recording from Iran, which was live-streamed in September 2020 and has been viewed about 1,500 times, IRGC commander Hossein Yekta said universities have become "the battlefront" and urged students to become "soft-war officers.”
The other video of an online talk from January 2021 glorified the death of Soleimani. Seen by thousands of people, the video shows former IRGC commander Gen Saeed Ghasemi comparing Soleimani’s death to the movie Terminator 2, saying that after Soleimani was killed, the broken pieces would come back together, stronger than ever before.
I thought “absolute free speech” in universities was paramount, and that students had to learn to be resilient when faced with “opposing views” or am I misremembering the last ten years or so? — Robin Chud (@MisterDanielBro) January 23, 2024
Ghasemi also falsely claimed that the Holocaust was "a lie and a fake" and talked about an apocalyptic war that British students could join to "bring an end to the life of the oppressors and occupiers, Zionists and Jews across the world."
"God willing, myself and you good students in Europe will be written in the beautiful list of the soldiers of the resistance from tonight." Ghasemi also added.
Lastly, the Instagram Live from 2020 was hosted by Mohammad Hussain Ataee, a British citizen in Yorkshire who was previously the secretary of the Islamic Students Associations of Britain. Although he is no longer the organization's secretary, he still serves as the secretary of the Union of Islamic Students Associations of Europe, an umbrella body that includes the British organization. Although Ataee, who was granted an audience with Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei last year, said the allegations against him were false, he did not answer further questions from the BBC.

It’s not just the Russians anymore as Iranians and others turn up disinformation efforts ahead of 2020 vote
(Of course it's not just the Russians!! Other countries see how successful the Russian government was in their disinformation campaign so why wouldn't other countries try it.)
By Craig Timberg and Tony Romm | Published July 25 at 5:29 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted July 26, 2019
A recent tweet from Alicia Hernan — whose Twitter account described her as a wife, mother and lover of peace — did not mince words about her feelings for President Trump: “That stupid moron doesn’t get that that by creating bad guys, spewing hate filled words and creating fear of ‘others’, his message is spreading to fanatics around the world. Or maybe he does.”
That March 16 tweet, directed to a Hawaii congressman, was not the work of an American voter venting her frustration. The account, “@AliciaHernan3,” was what disinformation researchers call a “sock puppet” — a type of fictitious online persona used by Russians when they were seeking to influence the 2016 presidential election.
But it was Iranians, not Russians, who created @AliciaHernan3, complete with a picture of a blonde woman with large, round-framed glasses and a turtleneck sweater. It was one of more than 7,000 phony accounts from Iran that Twitter has shut down this year alone.
And Iran is far from the only nation that has, within its borders, substantial capacity to wage Russian-style influence operations in the United States ahead of next year’s election. That means American voters are likely to be targeted in the coming campaign season by more foreign disinformation than ever before, say those studying such operations.
Former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III echoed the consensus of independent researchers in his congressional testimony Wednesday, saying of Russian online political interference: “It wasn’t a single attempt. They’re doing it as we sit here, and they expect to do it the next campaign.” He added that “many more countries” had developed similar capabilities, based in part on the Russian playbook. A new Senate Intelligence Committee report released Thursday found that Russia began targeting the U.S. election system in 2014 and concluded that the attacks had continued into 2017.
A short list of countries that host online influence operations with a history of interfering across borders includes Saudi Arabia, Israel, China, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela, researchers say.
They say it’s often not clear exactly who runs these operations — whether it’s the governments themselves or other actors — but that they typically echo the talking points of the ruling powers and back their geopolitical goals through tweets, posts and online videos. Operations in all of these countries, meanwhile, have the means and potentially the motives to seek to influence a U.S. election shaping up as among the most hotly contested in decades.
The influence operations in these countries, however, do not all share Russia’s demonstrated preference for Trump and other Republicans. The Iranians, for example, typically oppose Trump in their disinformation messaging, criticizing his decision to pull the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and administration policy on other issues, including Israel and the civil wars in Yemen and Syria, research shows.
“Multiple foreign actors have demonstrated an ability and willingness to leverage these kinds of influence operations in pursuit of their geopolitical goals,” said Lee Foster, head of the intelligence team investigating information operations for FireEye, a cybersecurity firm based in California. “We risk the U.S. information space becoming a free-for-all for foreign interference if, as a society, we fail to get an effective grasp on this problem.”
Researchers for FireEye and other firms have reported suspected Iranian disinformation on most major social media platform — Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google+ and others — and on stand-alone websites, as well. In May, FireEye also alleged that U.S. news sites may have been tricked into publishing letters to the editor penned by Iranian operatives.
The firm’s analysis spotted a number of instances where letters in newspapers in Virginia and Texas appeared to share similar characteristics to accounts on Twitter believed to be part of an Iran-based disinformation network. FireEye also catalogued fictitious Twitter personas used by Iranians that included a Harvard University student, a Michigan bodybuilder and an Iranian American woman from Seattle.
Some Iranian Twitter accounts, FireEye found, even sought to impersonate U.S. political candidates, including a California Republican who ultimately lost the general election for Congress. That account tweeted about the confirmation hearing for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh and a British royal wedding before beginning to promote Iranian interests, including tweets condemning the Saudis’ killing of Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
Some Iranian disinformation accounts, some of which were affiliated with state-controlled news operations, date back several years, but they have grown steadily more sophisticated. Twitter, Facebook and Google all have identified and taken offline accounts from Iran over the past year for engaging in coordinated, deceptive behavior.
“As part of our public archive of information operations, we have disclosed thousands of accounts and millions of Tweets originating in Iran that we have proactively removed,” said Yoel Roth, Twitter’s head of site integrity. “Every year is an election year on Twitter, and we will be applying all of our global learnings to protect and enhance conversations around the 2020 election.”
The Iranian tactics differ somewhat from those of the Russians, who through the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg infiltrated the online conversations of a wide range of U.S. political groupings — immigration hard-liners, African Americans, veterans, evangelical Christians, environmentalists — with messages attuned to the way those communities already were speaking among themselves on major online platforms.
The Iranian operations detected so far tend to lack that complexity, with messaging typically on a single side of an issue in line with government policy goals — countering Israel, for example — as opposed to multiple ones.
But there are clear signs of shifting tactics in the accounts identified by Twitter, Facebook and other companies so far. What’s known, researchers say, may be only small parts of much larger operations that remain undetected.
“The Iranian operations were a wake-up call to remind us that the Russians were not the only ones doing information operations,” said Camille François, chief innovation officer for Graphika, a network analysis firm based in New York that studies online disinformation.
Graphika found that among one set of 1,666 Iranian accounts taken down by Twitter in June, about 1 in 4 tweets were in English. Trump was mentioned more than 1,400 times — almost always in critical ways — with this anti-Trump tweeting peaking in early 2017, in the months around when he took office.
Researchers say that both the U.S. government and social media companies have grown more aggressive in battling online disinformation since the 2016 presidential election.
Cooperation between the FBI and Silicon Valley has improved markedly. U.S. Cyber Command blocked Internet access to Russian disinformation teams during the congressional midterm vote in November 2018, scrambling operations. Some researchers express hope that this rising aggressiveness may thwart — or at least deter — some foreign-based influence operations from interfering in future U.S. elections.
All of the major social media companies also have established teams devoted to combating disinformation, typically by identifying and shutting down networks of fictitious foreign-based accounts on an increasingly large scale.
This shift has been dramatic since 2016, when the companies saw foreign threats mainly in terms of traditional cybersecurity — hacks and bugs — as opposed to influence operations conducted by foreign adversaries with substantial resources. The Russian disinformation campaign in 2016 spent more than $1 million a month, Mueller reported in an indictment last year against the Internet Research Agency.
As social media companies crack down, the tactics of disinformation teams rapidly shift to improve operational security and more effectively evade detection. FireEye, for example, was able to identify some apparently fake Iranian accounts last year because contact numbers for supposed American Twitter users had the +98 country code from Iran, a tactical mistake operatives are unlikely to make again.
But among independent researchers and some lawmakers, significant skepticism remains on whether enough has been done to prepare for the threat in 2020.
“In 2016, Russia used bots and fake accounts to launch an unprecedented social media campaign designed to influence the results of our presidential election,” said Sen. Mark R. Warner (Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. “That playbook is out in the open now, and you can bet that unless the platform companies get their acts together, we’re going to see more and more foreign-based actors using it to wreak havoc in our democratic process.”
The nations hosting significant disinformation capabilities typically first saw them active in seeking to manipulate domestic audiences, shaping public perceptions in line with regime propaganda. The next step often was working regionally, by infiltrating online conversations in neighboring countries, as Russia did in Ukraine in 2014 as it annexed Crimea and fomented unrest elsewhere in the country.
Disinformation teams in Iran initially developed their tactics while manipulating domestic political conversation before gradually expanding operations to include more languages, more themes and foreign targets.
Human rights lawyer Simin Kargar, of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, said Iran for years has harassed journalists, political dissidents and artists in its internal disinformation campaigns. She has watched as Iran increasingly deployed such tactics against foreign targets.
“I would be surprised if the Iranians weren’t trying to expand their operations for the coming election, especially with the rising tensions between Iran and the United States,” Kargar said. “They would be far more savvy by 2020.”
Disinformation teams in Saudi Arabia have worked both internally and to manipulate other Gulf states, including in the nation’s struggle with rival Qatar, said researcher Marc Owen Jones, an assistant professor of Middle East studies at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Doha, the capital of Qatar. He said tactics in Saudi Arabia typically involve both sock puppets and automated accounts, called “bots,” echoing official government propaganda, including things said or tweeted by Trump.
Jones recently detailed in a series of tweets an apparent information operation emanating from Saudi Arabia following a visit to the White House this month by Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of Qatar. Jones found a single tweet, “The Prince of Qatar a supporter of terrorism, should not be in the White House but be at Guantanamo,” had been posted up to 800 times an hour over several days, from 2,582 unique accounts. The tweets mostly were directed at U.S.-based targets, including Trump, the CIA and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and at several news organizations, including Fox News, Reuters and The Washington Post.
“There’s still this pro-Trump message coming from Saudi Twitter, and I don’t think that’s likely to change,” Jones said. “They view Trump’s reelection as key to their own survival.”
A spokesman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington, Fahad Nazer, said, “Saudi Arabia does not interfere in anyway in the domestic affairs of other countries. It considers this noninterference principle to be a pillar of the rules-based international order. Just as importantly, Saudi Arabia does not engage in the dissemination of “disinformation” of any sort. Any allegations to the contrary are baseless.”
This trajectory from nationally focused to internationally focused disinformation campaigns raises longer-term worries about what other nations might have disinformation teams sharpening their chops on domestic audiences with an eye toward eventual use against foreign targets, including in the United States. In addition to those with known foreign disinformation capabilities, there are numerous nations — Turkey, Egypt, the Philippines, Qatar, Mexico and others — that now use such tactics mainly to influence domestic politics but could turn their attention to foreign targets.
In a related trend, online mercenaries have begun offering information operations as a commercial service. Facebook shut down 265 accounts from an Israeli company, Archimedes Group, in May for seeking to manipulate elections through social media targeting voters in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The company said on its website that it would “use every tool and take every advantage available in order to change reality according to our client’s wishes.”

Wounds Reviews
Mixed reviews about the film but Armie's performance is generally well-reviwed. Let's see how it builds up.
Tumblr media
THE BOTTOM LINE : It's Hammer time in the Big Queasy.
Opens 2019-March-3
Armie Hammer stars as a New Orleans bartender who opens a portal inviting demons into his world in this second feature from 'Under the Shadow' director Babak Anvari.
Anyone with a cockroach phobia might want to consider this a trigger warning because Wounds contains a multitude of them. A festering marriage of H.P. Lovecraft and David Cronenberg, the movie tracks the spiraling descent of Armie Hammer's charming but shallow New Orleans bartender Will after he unsuspectingly lets madness into his head, infecting his romantic relationships and friendships while giving him a disturbing view into the empty abyss of his own soul.
Writer-director Babak Anvari, who sparked excitement at Sundance in 2016 with the terrific domestic-possession shocker set in his native Iran, Under the Shadow, is in less distinctive territory with this March release from Annapurna. But even if it's a disappointment on those terms, voracious genre consumers should get off on trying to decipher the densely textured film's murky ambiguities.
Based on the novella The Visible Filth, by dark fantasy writer Nathan Ballingrud, Wounds swiftly sets up Will as an ordinary man who has opted out of any meaningful investment in life, preferring to coast by on his good looks, cocky manner and the enviable way he fills out a T-shirt. Since dropping out of Tulane University, he has found his niche working the night shift at roach-infested neighborhood dive bar Rosie's. Unlike some of his customers, he seldom gets wasted but prefers a steady booze intake throughout the day, to "maintain the buzz."
Will lives with grad student Carrie (Dakota Johnson), but is not too deeply committed to flirt aggressively with Rosie's regular Alicia (Zazie Beetz), ignoring her blossoming relationship with Jeffrey (Karl Glusman).
When oil-rig worker Eric (Brad William Henke) rolls in one night on a rowdy bender, a vicious fight breaks out over the pool table and Eric gets his face slashed open with a broken beer bottle. One of a group of probably underage college students drops a smartphone while fleeing the scene, and Will pockets it, intending to return it to the owner. But later at home alarmed texts start appearing from one of the freaked-out millennials, and gruesome images in the device's photo storage lead Will on a macabre journey into the unknowable, with Carrie getting caught up in it too.
Audiences familiar with Ballingrud's story will be better equipped than the uninitiated to make sense of all this, particularly the more arcane mumbo-jumbo elements. Those include an ancient, multi-volume tome on gnostic rituals, human sacrifices and the power of flesh wounds to transcend physical boundaries, not to mention a mesmeric web page of a cavernous tunnel.
The more relatable fear of a cell phone becoming a vessel for evil works better (who hasn't thought of their iPhone as a fast track to demonic possession?), in calls that unleash the ear-splitting howls of an inferno, or others that induce vivid hallucinations as the device appears to melt into an infestation of creepy-crawly bugs. Not recommended while driving.
The gist of it is that basically, Will's mounting terror is rooted in a sudden invasive awareness of who he is, where he's at in his stagnant life and how superficial his connections are to the people around him. Carrie drives that home when she calls him an empty shell: "There's nothing there to satisfy."
Of course, that would be more effective if Johnson didn't deliver such a flat, vacant performance. (Making Carrie a T.S. Eliot scholar follows in the great tradition of Denise Richards playing a nuclear physicist in the Bond film, The World is Not Enough.) Beetz brings a more alive, sexy presence, her character simultaneously drawn to Will while keeping him at arm's length, but neither of the women are given much substance.
This is very much Hammer's film and he gamely loses himself in the sweaty panic of the role, subverting his golden matinee-idol persona to explore the gnawing sense of inadequacy eating away at Will and steadily filling him with overwhelming rage. He also gets some memorably visceral body-horror moments, notably an itch that turns nasty, directly recalling the armpit orifice of the early Cronenberg entry, Rabid.
There's nothing here that comes close to the fascinating cultural specificity, the sobering political perspective or the elevating personal connection of Anvari's first feature, set in the Tehran of his childhood, near the end of the protracted Iran-Iraq War. But the director nonetheless remains a skilled craftsman, subtly tapping into the flavorful history of New Orleans as a hub of dark magic, while wrapping the entire action in a soupy soundscape of ambient dread.

Babak Anvari’s “Wounds” opens with a “Heart of Darkness” quote about the evil wilderness that whispered to Colonel Kurtz, and how it “echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core.” And, uh, that’s a pretty bold choice for a movie about a demonically possessed cell phone that’s trying to contact the emptiness inside of Armie Hammer.
Alas, the trouble with this silly horror exercise — Anvari’s follow-up to his unnerving 2016 debut, “Under the Shadow” — isn’t that it’s pretentious, but rather that it doesn’t take itself seriously enough. The film’s threadbare story runs parallel to some compelling ideas about masculine insecurity, internalized pain, and the price of genetic privilege, but Anvari’s well-calibrated jump-scare machine is too preoccupied with gross effects, unmotivated jolts, and that strange rash that’s growing in Hammer’s left armpit to engage with any of them. The film may have been conceived as a love letter to the likes of David Lynch and Nicolas Roeg, but — amusingly disgusting finale notwithstanding — it has far more in common with the jittery, skin-deep horror fare that’s filled the massive void those giants have behind after departing for television or the great beyond...
(....)
mysterious evil force is just a metaphor for its characters’ inner ugliness, the clearer it becomes that none of these people are real enough to carry that kind of weight. It’s telling that the most interesting scene is the one in which Hammer just sits at his laptop and Googles some generic occult nonsense — there’s a chance he might stumble across the plot of a better film. He doesn’t. Some wounds never heal.

Hi tumblr! Since my most popular post by far was this Read Across the United States map, I felt I should stop acting like the US comprises the entire world and make an equivalent map of wlw books for the countries of the world. This list includes novels, anthologies, and memoirs that take place, and often are written by natives of, countries across the world. And again, I need some help filling in the blanks.
