Isn't Madame Morrible a privileged role? Isn't she the literal VILLIAN? How come it's ok for her to be played by lgbt/woc but not a minor, also privileged character?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a "minor, also privileged character"? Uhm, but we've had like two lgbt/woc Madame Morrible's and I actually adore how Alexandra Billings put it and how she approached the role:
“It truly is our story,” she says. “Being a mixed race trans person, I live in a world that continues to be a place for a specific kind of person. My whole life has been about survival and trying to be seen in a world that does not acknowledge my existence. For me, that’s true of Morrible. She has risen in a way no other ‘otherized’ human has, and she recognizes Elphaba from the beginning: ‘There’s something in this human I need to tap into so that we can survive.’”
Yes, I totally think more people of colour and queer ppl should be casted in Wicked, regardless of the role they're playing. Not just for like diversity for diversity's sake but simply bc if you keep casting the same Type of person, the role keeps getting interpreted the same way and grows stale (example: Fiyero). And I'd argue it happened with Morrible too, before Sheryl Lee Ralph and Alexandra Billings reigned the character for a few years and gave the role some much needed fresh air.
But theaters have a rotating cast, so let's not get too hung up on who is a "privileged" and "not-privileged" person in a story. Let's strive for more diverse casts regardless of roles.
@itsevanffsbutspam, I wanted to say that I just listened to the Politics Girl Podcast interview with Alexandra Billings and it made me cry. I have a better understanding now and I appreciate your kindness. If anyone hasn’t listened to it, I urge you to. It’s a beautiful and insightful interview.
