Hey there! Hello, I'm Geekette, or Geek, I answer to both. I'm a variety streamer/gamer, stay at home mom to 4 crazy kiddos. I love multiple different crafting mediums, my favorite is crocheting. I play a wide variety of games, recently streaming mostly Destiny 2 as I've found a good little groove with it.

I am from Alaska, no... we don't live in igloos. Yes it is cooler most of the time, but it isn't always snowy.

as soon as will realizes her love language is acts of service there's no stopping him. her skincare is laid out in the right order when she enters her bathroom after him. when she arrives at their corner in the library she finds her coffee order on the table already. they go to the same partys for a while, showing up by themselves but leaving together and he always makes sure to take off her heels for her so she doesn't stumble drunk, he takes her makeup off and sets a water on her bedside table for her.

after you are in love and true love there's no sight in the world that ally loves more than will in her bed. all cuddled up and warm from sleep, he just looks so peaceful and she wants to wake up next to him for the rest of her life.

after she kissed his chest once while he wore his pre-game suit and she wore red lipstick, they make it a habit of her pressing lipstick stains on his dress shirts. he gets teased for it and asked about it so much but he loves leaving everyone in the dark about his gorgeous girl.

half the school (ally feels like it's half the school at least) has their eyes on them after they've won a successful beer pong game and are seen kissing on the porch. his instagram blows up and she's never been that happy to have hers set to private. they hear their first stick-taping joke from the team that night, the first of so many.

I agree with most of your rant but doesn't everything you said also apply to metal gear solid (hyperrealism, film influence, and especially violence)

anon, i don't know if this was a purposeful act of goading, but it worked, you just activated my trap card.

this is going to be long.

I am one of The Kojima Stans. I am a person who is deeply aware of how flawed the man is and I also know that he is the closest thing we have to a gaming auteur.

(Which, actually, is a complicated topic all of its own. Auteurs are much easier to find in video games because there are many many games that are the vision of a small team or even singular people. When we refer to Kojima as an auteur, we should take time to notice that he has frequent collaborators who also form the 'vision' that is associated with him. And while Kojima is a good game director, he is an even better production manager. His games could not be 'his' if he were not incredibly skilled at leading a team. SO ANYWAY the point is, when I refer to Kojima, please know I also mean the people who enable his vision.)

As previously stated, my problem with The Prestige Genre is that it's photorealism for the sake of realism. It's film influence because it wants to emulate film. It's violent because it thinks violence is shocking to us, the Video Gamers.

Metal Gear is nothing but a refutation of all of that, and the idea that you've been led to believe otherwise makes me curious. Have you… played a Metal Gear game?

Because you can't make a Metal Gear movie. Kojima's entire MO is to be in constant opposition and conversation with the player. Without the interaction, he could not tell these stories.

Like, okay, just Metal Gear Solid. Lets set aside that MGS is actually a remake of Metal Gear 2 and one of the core tenets of the entire series is a conversation with the idea of history and legacy. Lets not get into that, that's a more advanced class.

When Naughty Dog has Ellie pulls a knife on someone to shock us and make us feel uncomfortable about the violence we commit as gamers, MGS was talking about that shit in NINETEEN NINETY-FUCKING-EIGHT. MGS didn't have real-ass voice acting to be like a movie, it brought that in so it could tell a genuinely complicated story about a rebel group rising up against the US defense department, to talk about the shifting landscape of nuclear proliferation, and about what it means to be in a war, to accept your (sometimes GENETIC) fate to be a soldier, and how fucking hard it is to crack the shell of the military industrial complex.

Like, do you know what a Metal Gear is? There's a lot of definitions but the one I like (which actually fits through the series) is a device or apparatus that by its introduction automatically changes the global defense situation. It's textually usually a walking tank that can 'silently' launch nukes from anywhere.

Solid Snake is also a metal gear. His presence in the combat arena immediately changes the game. He's the Metal Gear Solid. He is a cool dude who gets the job done. Except he's traumatized from the first two games and doesn't want to fight anymore. Except he struggles with the guilt that he enjoys his job, the killing. Except he fights against that constantly, trying to bend his talents to good.

When you're a man who gets fucking left and forgotten in goddamn rural Alaska until people need you to hold a gun, how do you make something good out of yourself? If your only skills-- your only VERBS-- are shooting and strangling and drinking, then how do you do good? If your hands only destroy, how the fuck do you make the world better? Is it better to unmake yourself? Is there hope?

That's a hard fucking question at the core of Solid Snake! And it's a question to the player! You, holding the controller, you "enjoy the killing" says Liquid Snake. How are you the hero if all you're here for is the perfect little headshots? How do you become someone who puts good into the world?

1998! 1998!!!!! and like, I have not even gotten DEEP into what MGS1 is about! This is just surface stuff and a little bit deeper!

MGS2. MGS2 was when Kojima fucking nailed it, and it's still a masterpiece. I'm gonna try not to go on for literal paragraphs but the point is MGS1 was a watershed moment that literally changed the entire industry. And fans wanted a sequel. Demanded one!

MGS2 is a game that is cinematic and… well its not realistic and its not the most violent of the games even remotely. But it's also a story that could only exist as a game. It being a game that exists is in fact an existential question posed by Kojima to the player in one of the most antagonistic relationships you'll ever see between artist and audience.

MGS2 is the funhouse mirror of MGS1. It mimics the structure of MGS1. It constructs boss fights in similar ways. It has similar story beats and reveals. Except at every turn, Kojima tilts the mirror more and makes everything worse. All the power fantasies that did exist in MGS1 are turned into jokes. You're not Snake this time, you're Raiden. You don't get a fair fight with Ocelot this time, you get Fortune's bullet-repelling forcefield, lmao forget the cool ricochet shit. There's even the fun trick where MGS2 sets up things so it implies heavily that the 'canon' ending is the 'bad' ending of MGS1 so the player didn't even get the girl! (Spoiler: you did get the girl and she dumped you, bro. Now you have an emotional romantic relationship with the cute nerd guy, surprise!) (There is a whole OTHER fucking conversation re: queerness in Metal Gear and how its used, I love it.)

God I just want to reach in and shake everyone and make them understand that MGS2 was incredibly cool and basically a showcase of the PS2 hardware that ushered in a lot of other titles. It ALSO was an exploration of the concept of sequels and a blistering retort to fanboy demands. It was also really gay and post-modern and fucking weird and heartfelt! AND EVEN THROUGH ALL THAT. It loops back to the question at the core of MGS1, and it comes back to Snake years later, and he gives an answer. He's figured out what to do with himself other than drinking himself to death, and its genuinely emotional and powerful! It's hopeful!

Also I cannot overstate this enough: Kojima predicted so fucking much about our modern society! About fucking algorithms and Cambridge Analytica and information control. We mocked him! MGS2 was right!

I'm putting myself in a chokehold to stop. To make myself stop. But like. please understand i can do this for every game. ALL OF THEM.

My point is that Metal Gear is not trying to be a movie, no matter what the jokes say. They are games. They are stories that literally cannot function if they aren't games. They are games that are often actively having a conversation about the nature of games with the player while you're playing them. Sometimes it's brilliant like with MGS2! Sometimes, Kojima is throwing a temper tantrum like with MGS4! But you… can't just cut the interactivity of the series and make them into movies. There would be nothing there.

gosh...now come on anon u are going to make me blush...that is very nice of yall to say um i havent yet successfully played minecraft...tbqh......... OTL every time i try in the past has ended in me getting a migraine regardless of if i have learned the controls by that point or not.

im realy brain damaged wrt video games :/ once i could even platform. now?last time i played super mario sunshine wit wyrm it took me hours to beat the king boo casino level...+ extra 45 min on the boss fight......

i kind of try to keep this on the DL but i ..i aint a gamer. im grandpa at using my computer too. if i hadnt met grim or wyrm i extremely doubt i would have ever stuck to having a smartphone, especially cause my old flip phone got free unlimited data for $20 a month (in alaska mind u!) and by turning it sideways i could watch anything on youtube at 144p. why would i ever need anything else?

i rly like this ask tho like sry to go off on tangents but isk it just made me smile and be like +7 confidence to keep trying to heal my brain to enjoy video games again. and its fine if it never happens! its more abt the journey than the destination..plus, all the people i love are gamers™️ all very talented, and i get plenty enjoyment out of watching them play or talking abt the worlds of games...

Thess vs Farming Sims

Was up most of the night because ow, woke up far too early. Exhausted but can’t sleep. This seems to be a theme. At least the pain’s a bit better now. Though I’m going to have to go out later to pick up some bits and pieces.

So anyway, I’ve been sliiiiiiiightly whittling down my wish list lately. One of the games I picked up was Wylde Flowers, which was named A Witchy Life Story when I picked up the demo (I guess they didn’t want to give the game away too soon with the title). It’s ... I mean, okay, it’s basically Stardew Valley with the magical elements from various Sims games, but it’s ... a lot more than that, in ways I did not expect. So here’s the bullet points.

It’s honestly a good thing that most of Those Gamers (TM) wouldn’t look twice at a farming sim because “it’s not REAL GAMING”, because those same Those Gamers (TM) would biiiiiiiiiitch about this one. They’d yell about “forced diversity” and “SJW CUCKS” or whatever they call it when there’s, like, more than one POC or LGBTQAI+ individual in a game. As a for-instance, just attended an in-game wedding between a gentleman who’s definitely got some Scottish in the family woodpile and a gentleman of Mexican descent. Which was nice. (I was originally going to have the player character, Tara, go for the classy Iranian doctor lady but the really sweet Black dude from South Africa who runs the local bar kinda got there first and he was adorkable and I figured Tara was high-strung enough to want someone a bit more laid back so I went there instead. He calls Tara ‘kitten’. It’s adorable. Anyway, we also have a lady of Russian descent as the local blacksmith, an Indian lady from London doing meteorological studies, a Native American dude running a farm down the road, a native Hawaiian surfer dude running an exotic luxury goods stall, a family whose origins begin in Italy, a somewhat ... interesting Polish gentleman who I think has some serious shit in his past and is older than he looks, and a non-binary individual who’s originally from Japan who runs a butcher shop. (Their reaction to being given sushi, one of their favourite foods, is hilarious and adorable. Maybe I should have held out for Kai, romantically. Ah well, maybe if I do another playthrough.)

We also have Mayor of Smarm and I hate him. His wife’s probably okay, though.

Also there’s the “faith leader”. Basically this place has Scientologists by any other name. I don’t like him much either, and I am not happy about how many people follow this faith. At least one of them is a little less ... devout, if you can call it that? ... than the others. Just faith groups like that creep me out because of a lot of childhood baggage.

Then again ... in case you thought the witchy thing was just a sideline ... oh gods NO. There are there the quests that basically send you into the Fade (they call it the Gloaming, but whatever) and some Fae creatures. And even those are diverse as fuck. We have a fairy and a goblin (I have purchased farming bots from this lovely individual), and a werewolf originally from Alaska who comes by the nonbinary individual’s butcher shop for an epic amount of meat twice a week ... and then we have a curupira. They dug out an old Brazilian mythological creature for this, and did it right - backwards feet and a thing for mischief. I am impressed. Especially since animating backwards feet is probably a bitch.

Oh, and did I mention the witch hunt? I should probably mention the witch hunt. See, this faith group has ... views. Like, “We hate the Summer Festival that’s really just about promoting community bonding and unity because PAGAN”. And “There are ‘witches’ but we don’t use that term; we call them Malcontents and they are DANGEROUS”. There was a whole thing where something escaped from the not-Fade and possessed the blacksmith and she went around accusing poor single mom diner-lady of being a witch and we had to gather a whole bunch of stuff to do a (very quiet, very stealthy, very non-contact) exorcism just as possessed-blacksmith was about to give testimony at a literal, actual, everyone-in-town-must-attend witch trial. Funnily, no one has actually pointed a finger at an actual witch yet. The coven includes our Tara, the cute bar owner guy, the lovely lady who runs the general store, the local florist lady (not sure where she’s from but also not white), the classy doctor lady and the old gentleman from probably-Poland. But the entity possessing the blacksmith shouts ‘WITCH’ at the lady who runs the diner, who was only out after curfew to look for her wander-happy daughter who was out past curfew. (Oh, yeah, apparently we have a curfew and a Neighbourhood Watch set up to catch people wandering into the forest at night. Joke’s on you motherfuckers; I have a broomstick and can fly right over your bigoted judgemental asses. And by the way, witches - by which I mean me - ENDED THE DROUGHT YOU HAD OVER THE SUMMER, so you can fuck all the way off.) Apparently this is going to get dumber at some point.

I think that’s the thing - you can get a little bored with the average farming sim after awhile, but this one has plot, and that plot is ... fairly wild, all things considered. Deals with themes of intolerance and persecution while still being diverse, does its homework about other cultures, and while there are fetch quests of a kind, they’re spaced out with enough fairly meaty and occasionally time-sensitive quests that there’s more investment than just “you know, crops”. Though I am currently celebrating as how I finally got enough compost together for rich soil to have a hay field, so I won’t have to rely on smarmy grifter dude for my animal feed anymore.

Eh, I should probably throw clothes on and head out for a bit. See if I can nap after some time spent on a bus and a trawl through a grocery store. Might see if I can pick up the fixings for one of the dishes from my Baking Dish cookbook. I’ve been a bit too wiped to do anything this week - for which I entirely blame being stuck with more of the long typing than is feasible because of the combination of Scruffman, Temp, and Violet. At least I booked myself some time off in the not-too-distant future. Fine, it’s in like three weeks, but I can manage.

don: ummmm i have several things about don cause i like him a lot and i don't really like how people see him sometimes, i mean, everyone interprets him the way they want, but anyway, first about don x cassie, don genuinely likes cassie a lot and i like to think they met during college and that their story is genuine, like, no interest in the goths money, anyway, he likes cassie so much and thats why he broke off their engagement, cassandra is a family sim, she wants to get married and have her own family, but don isn't like that, and he couldn't make cassie happy, cause he wants to be free, he wants to have fun, meet new people etc but even though he is very smart (he is a doctor, and to study to be a doctor you have to be smart) he's kind of dumb when it comes to feelings so instead of ending the engagement in a civilized way he decided to do it right away and left cassie at the altar lmao oh and there is also that hc that don is a pediatrician who was circulating around these times i love this hc and i agree sm, don really likes children and if he is a father he will be a very nice father, even not living in the same house, he will do his best to be present in his child's life

dominic: i'll be honest with you i couldn't think of anything about dominic lmaoooo i think he's already a very developed character in his own and i really like him a lot but idk i couldn't think of anything lol im sorry

pascal: pascal is the best father in the world seriously if there was a competition between simnation's fathers pascal would definitely win and he always goes to all the parties, meetings etc that happen at tycho's school and he is super friendly with all the teachers and other parents and also with tycho's friends

juliette: for me shakespeare is something that actually exists in the sims universe and veronaville is kind of a funny coincidence but whenever juliette is with romeo she makes him swear they'll never fake their own death or anything like the original r+j did and end up dead just to be together and romeo always laughs about it
