#airbender Ty Lee

any thoughts on the theory that Ty Lee is distantly descended from air nomad groups that escaped and went into hiding? I've seen it around a few times but the biggest supporting arguments are how she moves and her spirituality as well as her grey eyes
One of the bigger posts with this theory was made by someone i used to be friends with, and we discussed this matter a lot back when that post was doing the rounds
Personally i absolutely support this theory. Ty Lee seems to be a very spiritual person (always talking about auras, she seems to be very in tune with her emotions and how her presence affects others) and is very light on her feet. Combining this with her gray eyes and a similar facial structure to Aang (especially compared to other ppl we see from the fire nation) it gives a very solid footing for this theory.
I've always had this headcanon that Ty Lee's grandfather is one of the kids Aang used to play with at the southern airtemple, or at least just someone Aang knows. In my HC this kid manages to escape and finds a place to hide out in the fire nation, because a lot of simple folk from the fire nation don't agree with the war and what Sozin did, they help him out. Hiding is easy for him because he doesn't have his tattoos, and he hasn't used his airbending since the genocide. The only people that really knew of his bending are his "adoptive" family, but they all die with the secret. None of his own kids or grandkids knew until after the war, when Ty Lee takes an interest in the culture and goes and asks him about it since he's old enough to remember the airnomads, and it turns out that he was one. Ty Lee then goes up to Aang, and reunites him with her grandfather.

Azulaang - love
Azula: Hey Hippie, there's been something I've been meaning to ask you.
Aang: Let's hear it Zules.
Azula: Don't get me wrong, I am forever grateful you would choose me as your wife despite it all but since it's discovered that Ty Lee is an airbender and you were once the last airbender, wouldn't it have made more sense for you to have pursued her and give her an heir to better repopulate the air nomads?
Aang: Yeah, but I don't have to. I can give and take bending on a whim now. With these air acolytes coming together, I can decide which is the most qualified to be an airbender. In this way, I can be with whoever I want for the sake of love, not necessity.
Azula: True, true.

What if Ty Lee has Synesthesia (including, but not limited to, experiencing sounds as colors or shapes) and the auras she sees are vibrations in the air because she's an almost completely repressed airbender who's bending only comes through in her insane agility/ability to leap insane distances unharmed AND seeing vibrations in the air.... As Colors...

Today’s ATLA drawing is of Ty Lee. I added the Airbenders’ symbol because Airbender Ty Lee is canon to me. For @eustaciavye28.

Atla icons !!!!!
You can tell I had fun drawing each background of the characters. Also I got to draw a lot of Zukos and fire.
Please credit me when you use these. Don’t edit my icons!

Ty Lee: I wonder how Azula and Aang's vacation to the spirit world is going.
Zuko: They're probably having the time of their lives. How many can actually physically enter the spirit world and be able to return to tell the tale?
Ty Lee: I hope I wasn't the only one to notice they are pretty much a thing just because I noticed their auras electrifying every time they go near each other.
Zuko: Don't worry you aren't. What of it?
Ty Lee: I hope you aren't too worried that Aang and Azula might have very passionate and possibly very lustful intercourse.
Zuko: What kinda statement is that? Now way, that's impossible.
Ty Lee: Why do you think that's impossible?
Zuko: We both saw how Azula flirts, she crashes and burns every time and Aang is a monk who also has problems with flirting, and, in my own personal opinion, his manhood may lack the certain size requirement.
Ty Lee: Wow, don't let Aang hear you say that. Seriously though, it's quite understandable for you to be concerned since she is your sister, and you want her to be safe and healthy.
Zuko: Well, I trust Aang is taking of her.
(2 weeks later)
Ty Lee: Welcome back Azula. How was the spirit world?
Azula: Oh my gosh! Completely indescribable! It was just too incredible for words!
Ty Lee: Was Aang everything you dreamed he would be?
Azula: (Devil smirk) Yes, indeed, he was and so much more (chuckles and purrs)
Ty Lee and Zuko glanced at each other, the former shrugged while the latter facepalmed.

This has to already exist on Tumblr, it just has to, but I couldn't find it sooo, here it is, if the creator or their friends would like to step up and give me a link to their own original post I'd be glad to swap it out.
That said.
Ty Lee as an airbender descendant (with bending or not) might as well be canon because too many details totally add up. The eye color, the physical build, the personality, the skills.... It makes so much sense.
I haven't gotten to Ty Lee in my recent rewatch but I'm going to go in to it with that in mind and look for more details.

Sokka may not be a misogynist, but the Netflix live action ATLA is:
There really is no cartoon/anime for female empowerment like the OG ATLA and LOK cartoons.
The creators of ATLA wrote the manifesto on how to create a masterful series on female empowerment and equality that is not cheesy or hocky.
In this show, women and girls are not a monolith but immensely diverse. There's no correct way to be a powerful, talented and bold woman or girl within the avatar universe.
You can be hyper-feminine like Ty Lee and Asami.
You can embody more traditionally masculine qualities like Korra and Toph.
Or you could just be a typical woman or girl falling more in between like Azula, Mai, or Suki.
You see the exact same thing for the male characters. There's no right way to be a man. There's many ways to be a man, and this idea flies in the face of patriarchy.
I say that the Netflix version is misogynist, because it's not enough to be a powerful woman. One must be allowed to be unapologetically, unabashedly and boldy powerful.
Which is what happens in the OG ATLA. Sokka's misogyny was actually a part of his character arc, because every time he was misogynist his misogyny was met with the answer that women and girls are phenomenal, that women and girls are living their lives and largely unconcerned with the opinions of men.
If you read the Kiyoshi novels, you learn that surprisingly enough, the least patriarchal amd misogynist nation in all of Avatar is the fire nation, and the misogynistic nation in all of Avatar is the northern water tribe.
The reason I say that the women in these shows are unabashedly powerful is because aside from Sokka and the master from the Northern Water tribe, no one ever questions why or how they are powerful. They expect it.
Zuko is Ozai's first born son, yet Azula is his pride. When Ozai imagines the future, he imagines it with Azula as the fire lord. He names her after his father. He trusts her to go find the avatar once he knows the avatar has returned.
Sokka and Katara effectively lost both of their parents, but Katara the youngest steps up as the mother and becomes the glue of the group. She's the one who becomes both an immensely powerful bender and healer.
Suki loves Sokka, but when we are introduced to her. She is unconcerned with him. Her and the other Kiyoshi warriors are the protectors of the village who go out into the world to do good into the world.
We see the revseral of all of these tenants in the Netflix show.
Ozai has hope for Zuko at the expense of Azula who he sees as a nuisance. She is no longer am obvious prodigy.
Katara is seen as a child who will not grow up by her brother who is now behaving as a father figure.
Suki is infatuated with Sokka and she follows him around Kiyoshi island when he arrives.
These woman are powerful but restrained and undermined in this power. Suki becomes concerned with the opinions of a man, and a random man at that.
What the OG ATLA taught to all women, girls, boys and men is that you never have to apologize for being powerful, intelligent, kind empathetic.
This is a very critical point that cuts to the heart of the OG ATLA that Netflix has missed.
