I feel one of the scariest things about Ozai is not necessarily the physical abuse he pulls on Zuko or Azula. It's the mental abuse and how under the radar it is.
Yes, it is easy to look at Zuko's scar and be horrified by his abuse. What I feel is more effective was that Ozai made Zuko believe that he deserved it. That he had to go on this three-year odyssey to try and find the Avatar for a chance at gaining his love back. Their reunion isn't about Ozai apologizing. It's Ozai saying how proud he is of Zuko for making up for HIS mistake. He doesn't mention the Agni Kai at all, and when Zuko does turn, he tries to make it sound like some exercise in learning respect.
Same thing with Azula. Ozai puts the mantle of Fire Lord on her shoulders, effectively giving her the responsibility of running a country. He puts on so much pressure to have her to be perfect (pitting her against Zuko, sending her out on missions). The only approval that he gives is for her performance which reflects on him. Basically, he treats her more like an asset more than as a person. And any failing she makes is on her part.
He puts so much responsibility on both Zuko and Azula, but never takes any for himself. So if they displease his high expectations, that's their fault.
And they believe him.

I don’t know I might just be a lame ass, but it irks me how netflix is entertaining the whole “ozai is soo hot” bullshit. I get it, his actor is conventionally attractive, but they’re hyping that shit up so much to the point where people are just glossing over and forgetting what Ozai has literally done. Attractive or not, remember what he had done to his kids, his wife, his nation, and the world.
Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made him a tooth-rotting sweetheart just for fan service. Netflix needs to be repeatedly reposting the main five who actually saved the damn world and not the literal villain just because everyone thinks he’s so hot.

Just realized something else for this reason she was forced to marry him and have kids to fulfill prophecy if she didn't marry him her family and friends would be killed and she was not allowed to to them ever again he probably took advantage of his wife when ever he wanted and was mad he had to wait till a while till she healed after give birth both times Do think ozai's dad told him to make sure you have a child no matter what. And ozai gladly took advantage his wife. To the ones who voted no your forgetting he burnd his own sons eye and banished him even after his zuko latterly begge in his arms and needs head down and begged forgiveness and didn't fight him agniki just for speaking out of turms he was planning on killing his son for it. And even after you years ozai thought his son still deserved it and learned nothing. I really hope the nos are a clicking errors

No matter how critical I am of Zuko and how he handles his issues, let me remind you...
...he got it from Ozai and Ozai was magnitudes worse. I mean could you imagine a narrative from Ozai's point of view? It would somehow be even MORE self-pitying. Zuko just tried to get the Avatar to restore his honor and his "birthright". Ozai threw a shitfit and tried to commit a genocide of the Earth Kingdom all to outdo his brother. I mean we pick on Zuko for being a drama queen, but how much more drama queen can you get than THIS?!?
I mean, Ozai was supposed to be Zuko if he never cleaned his act, right? Even was designed to look like him? Part of me is just curious of how self-aggrandizing one could get if it puts even Zuko to shame.

Something I've never thought about or read from someone else before (but what I think would be very apt and fun) is a rugby AU with ATLA. I reckon Suki and Azula would be great in the second row or maybe flankers. Katara and Mai would be in the backs but I'm not sure what specifically. Ty Lee is a full back for sure. And Yue would be like a number 8 or something.
Anyway, what positions they would play is not the point. The point is the 2 opposing sides of the rugby dad spectrum that Ozai and Hakoda would represent.
You've got Hakoda who is the very nice, supportive dad who is absolutely delighted that his daughter is into rugby like he was. He might even coach if he's got some free time on the weekends because he likes to be involved. He brings snacks and drinks for everyone in the team plus parents and coaches and carries a first aid kit around with him at every game just in case. Also, if someone gets injured and needs to go to hospital or minor injury place and her parent isn't there, he would 100% stay in A&E until the parents got there. He compliments everyone after the game on their playing. He's happy to help if Katara wants some extra practice but doesn't force her to.
And then you've got Ozai who is that dad who obviously forced the kids into it. Azula would enjoy it but Zuko would have an absolutely miserable time. They would both be forced to do brutal extra practice with him but he would never offer to coach a session for the whole team. If his kids got injured, he'd tell them to toughen up and get on with the game unless a bone was sticking out (and even then...). He would talk shit about his kids team and the other team and even his own kids not discreetly.
And I think that would be a fascinating dynamic between two metrically opposed rugby dads with very different philosophies on how to get the most potential from their kids.
