hey, can i pester you for some podcast recs? something with a good dose of humour and not too many episodes to catch up on. a sprinkle of queer romance would be a nice bonus. my fave so far is tsco starship iris, and i also loved greater boston, wooden overcoats, the bright sessions and caravan. and thanks always for all your great recs! you’ve brought many hours of joy into my life :)
We Fix Space Junk -- Two intergalactic repairpeople -- a knowledgeable cyborg veteran and a former socialite on the run -- travel the universe meeting people and fixing things at the behest of the terrifying intergalactic corporation they’re trying to work off their debts to. Hilarious British sci-fi sitcom featuring Evil Space Capitalism, many many wonderful AI characters, and an absolutely delightful teenage space wasp-human-cow hybrid princess who is probably off accomplishing her grandiose special destiny somewhere offscreen while the main characters deal with things like their bosses possibly trying to kill them (again).
Death by Dying -- People have a tendency to die in odd ways in the small town of Crestfall, Idaho. Luckily the town also has an Obituary Writer, an eccentric and nameless but impeccably stylish fellow whose closest friend is the Angel of Death, and who has a knack for solving murders even though that’s definitely not his job description. Throw in walrus haikus, extremely rude ravens, Something Mysterious And Malevolent Lurking In The Dark Woods Outside Of Town, disappearing childhood homes, silent nuns, ghost bicycles, and three man-eating cats, and you get something like a delightful cross between Wooden Overcoats and Lemony Snicket. (Also, OW is peak Canonically Bisexual Dumbass.)
Less is Morgue -- Riley is a paranoid, reclusive teenager with a fondness for conspiracy theories who lives in their parents’ basement. They’re also a predatory ghoul who feeds on human flesh. Evelyn is a cheerful, outgoing young woman with questionable tastes in media. She’s also a ghost, ever since she was killed by a falling stage light at a Nickelback concert 16 years ago. And since Riley dug up and ate Evelyn’s corpse, they’re roommates! Will they ever manage to record a coherent episode of their podcast without something going ridiculously wrong and/or Riley eating one of the guests? Probably not!
Victoriocity -- The steampunk buddy-cop comedy-mystery thriller you never knew you needed but definitely do! Featuring Inspector Fleet, a grouchy, extremely driven policeman looking for the murderer of the Empire’s greatest inventor, and Clara Entwhistle, an even more driven and unfailingly upbeat rookie journalist who has just arrived in the island-spanning, bizarre cityscape of alt-history Even Greater London. Come for some of my favorite sarcastic British narration since Adams and Pratchett, stay for characters-are-begrudgingly-forced-to-work-together-until-they-come-to-genuinely-and-deeply-care-about-one-another-as-friends trope. (Also for Tom “Eric Chapman” Crowley as the aforementioned grumpy detective.)
Quid Pro Euro -- From one of the other leads of Wooden Overcoats, this doesn’t have a typical plot as such but has made me laugh so hard I pulled a muscle despite the fact that I know nothing about the EU. Which is what this near-surreal, Look Around You-style comedy is about: Felix Trench’s vision of a simultaneously hilarious and terrifying alternate European Union, seen from the perspective of a serious of educational tapes from the ‘90s predicting what the EU would look like in the 21st century. It’s hard to describe this show in any way that does it justice, but it’s incredibly funny.
Time:Bombs -- A miniseries by the exalted creators of Wolf 359, which (because they are madmen) was written, recorded, and produced in the space of one week. Also, a comedy about an NYC bomb retrieval squad on New Year’s Eve, most of whom are just trying to get through the night while their leader attempts to break a record for most bombs cleared before the calendar ticks over. Chaos and hilarity ensure.
Superstition -- Wisecracking, bi, Jewish, definitely-a-private-eye-just-don’t-check-her-qualifications Jacqueline St. James receives a message from her father, which is weird, because her parents disappeared years ago. Following the trail leads Jack to Superstition, Arizona, a town in the middle of the desert where everyone’s got secrets, assorted ghosts/monsters/cryptids harrass the locals, and the missing persons rate is the highest in the nation. As a protagonist Jack is Looking For Trouble And If She Cannot Find It She Will Create It, so while Superstition isn’t a comedy per se, it’s got a fair share of laughs and is also just so, so excellent in general.
Standard Docking Procedure -- A self-declared hopepunk scifi workplace comedy about the somewhat dysfunctional staff of Pseudopolis Station, effectively a high-tech interstellar truck stop. It’s funny and heartwarming, nothing truly bad happens, and Julia Schifini is there.
Solutions to Problems -- A morally-questionable human named Janet who has defintely never done any illegal time travel and an easygoing, physically indescribably alien who likes to go by Loaf host an intergalactic advice podcast. Are you tired of your species’ insistence on solving everything via ritual combat? Not sure how to talk to your partner about whether body-swapping has a place in your sex life? Dealing with being a superpowered teenager summoned into being by the collective will of an apocalyptic groupthink cult? Janet and Loaf have you covered! Provided that Janet’s on-and-off girlfriend, the AI who supplies the air they breathe, doesn’t kill them all first. Oddly heartfelt comedy in the form of a relationship advice radio show from the Space Future.
Middle:Below -- This show’s tagline is “Remember: bad things WILL happen,” and that is basically a lie. This is actually a short, incredibly heartwarming and frequently funny show about Taylor Quinn, the only human with the ability to pass between the land of the living (aka the Middle) and the land of ghosts (the Below). Meaning, of course, that the dead call on him to fix all their problems, with the help of a girl named Heather, a ghost named Gil, and a cat named Sans. (Also, some of the most comparatively wild live shows I’ve ever heard.)
Inn Between -- Ever wonder what fantasy characters get up to between adventures, during all that time they seem to spend at inns? This show skips all the adventuring, question, and action, instead focusing on the quiet moments between where what is Definitely Not A D&D Party meet and progress from bickering strangers brought together by circumstance to close-knit found family -- all at the inn, of course. (Lots of queer folks in here also, although there’s no romance at least in the first  couple seasons.)
The Godshead Incidental -- A relatively new but very exciting and so far really enjoyable show!! Following a young woman who writes an advice column through her life in a familiar, and yet strange city where anyone might be a minor god -- your editor, your landlord, that weird guy on the street who was shouting about how he’s the God of Memory and you got into a fight with him and now you keep forgetting everything? Also, your apartment is full of pigeons now because you found out the aforementioned landlord is secretly the god of doorknobs and he’s panicking. Good luck! (Starring Ishani Kanetkar, aka Arkady from Starship Iris!)
Gal Pals Present: Overkill -- Madison, a middle schooler at a Girl Scout camp, agrees to play a game with a somewhat tastelessly bright-pink Ouija board. However, Madison doesn’t know that she’s a natural medium, and now sarcastic mid-2000s 19-year-old Aya Velasquez has joined the many ghosts who are for some reason haunting scenic Harding Park. Aya, however, will not rest until she can solve her own murder (and possibly get to know that other ghost girl a bit better, who says romance has to stop when you’re dead?). Absolutely hilarious writing of a narrator who is almost definitely wearing spectral Uggs during the entire show.
Dark Ages -- The Rivercliffe Museum of Mostly Natural History is one of the finest museums anywhere! Or it would be, if anyone ever actually visited it. Or maybe if the staff weren’t a disastrous and dysfunctional collection of criminals, weirdos, wannabe immortals, idiot bisexuals who can’t just admit they like each other, and one extremely uptight elf with no people skills. Also, it would probably help if the legendary and fearsome Dark Lord, finally returned from his millennia of dormancy to complete his prophesied conquest of the world, wasn’t hanging around watching the chaos unfold because they’ve got his crown on display. (Fantasy workplace comedy with a theme song that did not need to go that hard?)
Brimstone Valley Mall -- It’s mid-December 1999, and at one mall in South Central Pennsylvania, a group of demons are going about their evil work -- namely, working at various dinky kiosks and restaurants, hoping of achieving every demon’s dream of getting to work at Hot Topic, trying not to do too much evil because Earth is way more fun than Hell and no one wants to get promoted back home, and preparing for their band's triumphant opening performance at the upcoming Y2K party. Just one problem: their lead singer is missing. Another absolute masterwork from The Whisperforge.
Arden -- 10 years ago, Hollywood starlet Julie Capsom vanished into the woods of northern California, leaving behind a car containing a human torso that may or may not have belonged to one Ralph Montgomery. Now, private eye Brenda Bentley and reporter Bea Casely, both of whom were among the first at the scene and both of whom have their own very strong opinions on the case, are setting out to solve the mystery on their true crime podcast, Arden. Providing, of course, they can stop arguing with each other long enough to solve it. (Or, a not-really-parody-but-definitely-comedy “true crime” podcast where the crime is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet -- and even knowing that, it’s still a genuine mystery with twists and a surprise ending! -- and the hosts are wlw Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing. In other words, it’s perfect. Season 2 is upcoming soon and is adapting Hamlet!!)
Alba Salix/The Axe and Crown -- Another high fantasy workplace sitcom, this one a medical comedy about the titular not-very-personable witch who runs the kingdom’s House of Healing and the various shenanigans she gets into, between her somewhat scatterbrained sister and brother-in-law the king and queen and her assistants, an overly-whimsical fairy and a wannabe monk forced to do community service. The same feed contains The Axe and Crown, a spinoff set in the same world that manages to simultaneously be a sitcom about the staff of a local pub trying to stave off foreclosure and come up with schemes to beat their business rivals, and a heartfelt story about gentrification and recovery starring a gay veteran with PTSD? Which is possibly one of my favorite podcasts? (Also contains one of the most unbelievable crossover cameos possible: Leon Stamatis.)
The Adventures of Sir Rodney the Root -- Also a high fantasy comedy! When a witch transforms heroic Sir Rodney into a small piece of wood, his closest companion Sir Gilbert must set out to cure him by collecting several highly powerful and dangerous relics, accompanied by a snarky dwarfen thief, an imperious princess, a slightly creepy human child raised by fairies, a picky elf sorcerer, a dead unicorn possessed by the ghost of a stoner, and a bard who breaks the fourth wall too much for his own good. So far as I can tell, nobody is straight.
The Amelia Project -- A dark comedy about a secret organization that helps people fake their deaths. Which is honestly a pretty full summary, barring the two important points that 1. this show contains possibly the most continuity-warping crossover event of all time (it’s the center point of this absolutely chaotic diagram), and 2. in one episode Felix Trench plays a character named Bartholomew Fuckface Chucklepants Knucklecracker.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 6 Easter Eggs & References
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS review contains spoilers.
Trying to catch all the references and Easter eggs in any given episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks is a little like trying to count all the times Spock does anything with his eyebrows in The Original Series. It’s possible, but even when you think you’ve spotted everything, the second you blink, he raises his eyebrow again.
In the sixth episode of Lower Decks, there aren’t any references to Spock raising his eyebrow, but there are plenty of eyebrow-raising Easter eggs. Here’s everything we spotted, from holodeck characters to retro-23rd century designs, and one shout-out to the greatest helmsman in Starfleet history.
Ambient Warp Drive Noises Are the Best White Noise
For years, Trekkie superfans have pointed out that the soothing, ambient noise of the Enterprise-D is a sonic genre of white noise in it of itself. Several white noise simulators exist online to help you recreate this noise, while a few fans have tried to create devoted YouTube channels to the various different “ship sounds.” The person who designed all these sounds, and recorded them (often using heavily modulated freezer sound recordings) was Jim Wolvington. From TNG through Enterprise, nearly all ‘90s sound design was overseen or created by Wolvington. In this Lower Decks scene, the gang tries to create the sounds of the Enterprise-D and Voyager.
How the Lower Deck-ers would know what Voyager sounds like at warp is somewhat questionable, considering the ship was missing in the Delta Quadrant for most of their careers. Maybe they visited one of Barclay’s holographic reconstructions?
An Antares-type ship from TOS
The ancient Starfleet wreckage in this episode features a ship with the registry NCC-502. In the TOS episode “Charlie X,” the ship Antares was retroactively given the registry number NCC-501. This designation and starship design is also based on ships seen in The Animated Series episode “More Tribbles, More Troubles.”
Sonic showers
Lower Decks makes its second joke about the fact that most people on Starfleet ships probably use waterless “sonic showers.” The sonic showers were first glimpsed in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but we’ve almost never seen anyone use them. Because water can apparently be replicated, we’ll never really know why 24th Century starships still used the sonic kind. Either way, Dr. T’’ana has a point, using sound vibrations to get cheese out of fur sounds like a drag.
Boimler has something in common with Jean-Luc Picard
When Fletcher and Boimler joke about their Academy days, we learn that Nassicans tried to eat Boimler’s heart at one point. This references the TNG episode “Tapestry,” in which Nassicans stabbed Jean-Luc Picard through the heart, right after he’d graduated from Starfleet Academy.
TOS communicators
Tendi references the classic era of TOS when she says that among the old Starfleet wreckage, she hopes to find “ the original communicators, you know the clamshell design?” When Dax traveled back in time to the 23rd Century in “Trials and Tribble-ations,” she talked about an old tricorder having “classic, 23rd Century design.” Even in Star Trek, people are fans of the design aesthetic of TOS.
Wy can’t they just beam all the wreckage?
Because there’s so much space junk to clean-up, Tendi wonders why they can’t just beam-up the debris using the cargo transporter. In TNG, we saw the cargo transporter in episodes like “Datalore,” but we rarely saw it used in a salvage operation. Rutherford tells her “that stuff’s too massive” to be beamed by the cargo transporter, which could answer a very old fan question: Why can’t starships beam other starships to other locations? Apparently, size is an issue.
All your favorite holodeck parties
Before taking Tendi to the holodeck, Rutherford points out that the Holodeck is not just for fun, and then lists a bunch of ways people have used the Holodeck for fun. As he says, “The Holodeck is not just for hanging with..” and then Rutherford drops a litany of characters who have appeared in Trek, occasionally on the holodeck, but not always. Here’s the list of characters and which episode they appeared.
Sherlock Holmes: Data played Sherlock Holmes in the TNG  holodeck episodes “Elementary My Dear Data,” and “Ship in a Bottle.” A holographic version of Sherlock Holmes was never seen in these episodes.
Robin Hood: This seems to reference the TNG episode “Q-Pid” in which Picard is put into the guise of Robin Hood by “Q.” This was a weird alternate dimension simulation, but it wasn’t on the holodeck.
Sigmund Freud: In the TNG episode “Phantasms,” Data took advice from a holographic version of Simgun Freud.
Cyrano De Bergerac: Cyrano De Bergerac does not appear as a holodeck character in Star Trek, however, holodeck addict Reginald Barclay was playing the role of Cyrano for one of Beverly Crusher’s theatrical productions in the episode “The Nth Degree.” In that episode, Barclay later merged his brain with the ship’s computer, which, of course, led to him becoming terrible. The larger plot of “Terminal Provocations,” at least for Fletcher, is pretty much the same.
Einstein and Stephen Hawking: Data played poker with holographic versions of Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Isaac Newton in the TNG episode “Descent Part 1.” Stephen Hawking played himself.
Leonardo da Vinci: On Voyager, Janeway frequently hung out in a holographic reconstruction of DaVinci’s workshop. The Voyager hologram of Leonardo da Vinci was played by John Rhys-Davies.
Socrates: The Greek philosopher Socrates was also mentioned in the episode “The Nth Degree,” mostly because Cyrano claims to have met him. But, in the Voyager episode “The Darkling,” the holographic doctor created a hologram version of Socrates who played Kal-toh (or Vulcan chess) against the Vulcan T’Pau. We most recently saw a Kal-toh game set in the season finale of Star Trek: Picard.
Delta Shift
It’s been previously established that the USS Cerritos seems to be on a four-shift duty rotation. This was an idea first introduced in “Chain of Command,” where Captain Jellico temporarily ordered the USS Enterprise on a four-shift rotation instead of three. Delta Shift is, presumably, the night shift.
Holodeck safeties
When Tendi and Rutherford enter the training program, the shipwide failures cause the holodeck safeties to be disabled. This concept goes back to the first season of TNG, in which the holodeck safeties were disabled in the episode “The Big Goodbye.” Arguably, even before that though, in the episode “11001001” an upgraded holodeck was used as a trap to lure Captain Picard and Commander Riker away from the bridge.
Load Bajorian Marketplace
Tendi and Rutherford are briefly in a holodeck recreation of a Bajoran marketplace on the planet Bajor. Though it’s not clear which province or city they’re in, it’s definitely not one of the bigger cities. Despite the fact that the space station Deep Space Nine was originally in orbit of Bajor, we didn’t get down to the planet all that much.
Evasive pattern Sulu alpha
When the Cerritos is in trouble, it’s time for some evasive maneuvers. Naturally, saying “Evasive pattern Sulu alpha,” references the flight controller (or helmsman) of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, Hikaru Sulu.
Fletcher hooking his brain up to the computer
If it’s not obvious by now, the plot of “Terminal Provocations” is mostly lifted from “The Nth Degree,” insofar as Fletcher hooking his brain into a computer is similar to what Barcarly did in TNG. That said, aspects of the AI monster in this episode are vaguely reminiscent of other rogue AI hybrids, including Nomad from the TOS episode “The Changeling,” and naturally, V’Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Transfer to the Titan
Fletcher is sent to the USS Titan at the end of this episode. This means the person who “fired” him from his job is almost certainly Captain William T. Riker. In 2280, Riker has been the captain of the Titan for probably less than a year. We know Will and Deanna went to the Titan after Star Trek: Nemesis but we never actually saw what they did there. It’s also a good bet, that at this point in time, Riker is an expectant father.
Considering that Ron Docent’s secret password in the previous Lower Decks episode was “Riker,” it feels very possible that we could be getting a Number One cameo very soon. Or, at least, we can hope!

A Reluctant Hero Chapter 12
JD left after accepting the job that came in as soon as he turned his phone back on, but not before yanking me to him and kissing me thoroughly.  A tiny nip to my bottom lip, the dark hungry look still in his eyes, promising me he’d see me soon, he was gone.  I shook my head and swallowed down the rush of lust that he’d created with a single fucking kiss, and tried to decide if food or work would be my first course of action.
Kelsey found me in the kitchen, having seen her dad leaving she decided to come see if I was still capable of speech, or movement, I thought as I caught her smirking.  “What?”  I asked, pulling out the ingredients for French toast.  “Hungry?”
“Looks like Dad had you for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” she offered, her smirk growing into a full blown smile.  “Seriously, you have a little-” she gestured to her own neck and I felt my eyes widen.  He hadn’t.
I turned my head and tossed my hair back as I studied my neck in the reflection of the microwave glass door, and sure enough, a bite mark.  Shit.  I groaned and then glared when she laughed.  “Not funny, Kelsey.”  I pulled my hair back down, but then sighed as I looked at the ingredients in front of me.  Hair hanging meant a greater chance of eating said hair by accident, fuck.  I sighed and pulled it back and twisted it into a knot as I pulled open the junk drawer and grabbed a hair tie.  “I can’t believe I didn’t notice that he-”  I was muttering, trying to flip through ALL the times we came together and remember the feeling of him BITING me, but nothing came.  Nothing other than the flush caused by how good every time he touched me felt.  Or the images of his body, naked and glistening with sweat as it hovered over mine.  Fuck.
“You just went red, pale, and then let out a gasp,” she offered from the stool she was studying me from.  “You want me to leave you alone to take care of whatever caused all that?”
I shot her another look and picked up the first egg.  Cracking it with more force than necessary, I ignored her.  Eggs, cinnamon, a hint of cream, vanilla, then thick slices of bread before adding each to the lightly buttered pan.  “Grab the powdered sugar, syrup, and I think there’s some whipped cream in the fridge-”
“You didn’t use that with-”  I groaned out loud at the very idea that my best friend kept mentioning the sex she was insinuating I’d had with her own father.  “Joking, Ani, God get a grip.”
“Let’s never, ever, ever discuss YOUR dad and me-”
“Screwing like rabbits?”  She offered, which earned her another sharp look.  “Fine, but I’m your closest friend, so if not me, then who?”
JD called a few hours after Kelsey had tortured me to her heart’s content.  He was elbows deep in a case, but he wanted to hear my voice.  After reminding me of all the ways he liked to hear my voice, he sighed and said he had to go.  My answering sigh was met with a low chuckle and he promised me that he was just as eager to see and hear me in person as soon as possible.
I had gone back to my desk, listening to the voicemails from the calls I’d missed while we were ‘occupied’, I rolled my eyes at Roger’s insistence that he wanted to speak to me again.  Hearing my dad sound irritated that Pandi was down, and that I’d closed the loopholes for him to backdoor his way into the AI’s system.  I knew I’d have to call him back, but work called to me.
Getting lost in the story I’d been working on, I ignored the reminder that Roger had shown up at my house AGAIN while JD and I were locked in our own bubble.  I took heart in knowing that he hadn’t been able to breach my security, but it was annoying regardless.  Pandi broke through as I fell into a world of my own creation, telling me that once again, Roger was on my doorstep.
Asking for the intercom, I kept typing as I spoke.  “If you don’t remove your lying, cheating ass from my property, Roger, I will be forced to electrify the door, the porch, and the fucking pathway.  While seeing you flail around as current flows through your sorry ass would amuse me, I hear the paperwork for such shit is enormous and a pain in the ass to fill out, so kindly fuck off.”
“Ani, come on, you know that you can’t throw away what we had.”  He was pleading, while trying to make it sound seductive and alluring.  I snorted.  “Do you really think that JD Richter, hero at large, is gonna be happy with you after screwing a hybrid astronaut?”  Nice, first try to remind me of how ‘good’ we had it, then insult me.  “I mean, have you SEEN Molly Woods?”  Even better, show that you’d fuck her, you more moron.
“Roger, what we had was at best temporary insanity for me, at worst it showed how fucking desperate I was for sex with something not battery powered.”  Take that, you tasteless prick.  “As for JD and his past?  I have seen Molly Woods, and he and I have talked about her.”  Again, what did he think, I just randomly hump hot men?  “He seemed pretty fucking happy after we spent almost 24 hours locked in MY house, which again, I want you to walk away from.  This is your last warning, Roger.  Leave now, never darken my fucking door again, or ZAP.”  I hadn’t stopped writing, multitasking wasn’t only something JD excelled in.
“Fine, but don’t call me when your little rebound implodes.”  I truly snorted so hard I had to stop typing.  Shit, honestly?  “I mean it, I’m moving on-”
“With the coed?”  I offered, through giggles that the snort had turned into.  “Great, let me know where you register.  I won’t buy you a wedding gift, but fuck if I won’t laugh at the teething toys she picks out for playtime.”  With that parting shot, I told Pandi to turn off the intercom, but watched the camera to make sure he flounced off, and hoped that he’d go asshole over head again so I could keep the good times rolling.  Sadly he didn’t fall down, he shot the camera a glare and then walked calmly to his car.  I sighed and wondered if he would stay fucking gone this time.
I answered my dad’s call as I was making breakfast the next morning.  I could hear his frustration in just the ringing of the phone, but the heaviness of it in his tone caused another eye roll.
“Dad,” I cut him off before he could gain steam at how irresponsible it was to ignore the world, meaning him clearly, for whatever idiotic reason I could have had.  “I wanted, no I needed, time alone.”  With JD, and his naked body, and fuck, where was I?  “I don’t know what the big deal is, we used to ‘unplug’ every weekend when we went camping.”
“Yes, but then I had you in my sight and I could keep you-”  I heard him huff an exaggerated sigh.  “Anilea, you have to understand that you’re my little girl.  No matter how old you get, no matter how independent you are, you’re still my daughter.”
“I understand that,” I sat down with my full breakfast and put him on speakerphone.  “But you have to get that I AM an adult, Dad.  Putting surveillance software on my AI, or GPS trackers on my car, or any of the other ‘protective’ measures you want to take is stifling.  Trust that you raised me to be careful, please?”
“Roger-” he started, and I groaned.  “You have to admit, Ani, he’s not the first in a long line of assholes that took advantage of you.  He lived in your house, ate food you bought and prepared, paid no bills, and I’d bet money that you even bought him things he mentioned he liked.”  So?  I like to give people gifts, and what better gifts than things I knew they wanted?  “I’m not saying you shouldn’t be generous.  Kelsey is a case in point, she’s good people.”  He’d met Kelsey during one of his visits to the house and took to her immediately.  “But men?  You have a bad track record.  Think of Jason-”
“I’d rather never think of Jason, Dad.”  The fling, if you could call it that, that had made me blush when JD asked for more information about my past indiscretions.   “Besides, that didn’t go that-”
“He had my name forged on the marriage license, Ani.”  I shut my eyes at the memory of Jason Sallinger.  A lab tech that worked under my dad, but was nearer his age than mine.  Attractive, and predatory, I hadn’t known at sixteen men like him existed.  At least not in my world.  “If I hadn’t realized what was happening, I can’t even think of what would have happened.”  We’d learned, as the police investigated Jason, that I wasn’t his first attempt at the con.  And at least one of his past paramours was missing and had never been heard of after they eloped.
“You know that I’m more careful, Dad.”  Now, I thought, I didn’t let anyone really know how deep my pockets were. How fast the wealth was that I’d earned through my own creativity, and through my inheritance from Mom.  “Roger has no idea how much I’m worth.”
Dad sighed again.  “Your house alone paints a picture, Ani.  Your two vehicles, the trips you take that aren’t promotion related.  And the books?  For fuck’s sake, sweetie, you’re on every talk show every time another one is released.  He knew enough.  It’s why he can’t let go, or at least-”
“He showed up while the system was locked down.”  Dad’s end went completely silent.  “And he showed up a few hours after it went back up.  I told him I planned on shocking him, literally, if he shows up again.”
“Ani, let me send the man I use to-”  He took a deep breath and I could almost see him preparing to admit something he knew I’d find irritating.  “Help keep you safe.  He can check to be sure that Roger doesn’t have his own shit in place to watch you.”
I didn’t consider that Roger would do anything like that, but in a flash I realized that he might.  Maybe not before I caught him, but now?  Now he seemed desperate to keep me.  I reluctantly agreed to his offer.  Adding that I’d want this man to remove anything he found, which Dad said was the entire point, of course.
He promised to come with the man, hopefully later in the day, and I told him I’d make us an early dinner.
“Get the Scrabble board out,” he demanded, and I smiled.  “It’s been too long since I trounced you at wordplay.”
“Good luck, old man,” I challenged, and hung up grinning from the return to normalcy.
Dad was true to his word, and with Kelsey beside me, we watched the two men, the stranger holding a device of some sort in his hand go inch by inch around the exterior of my house.  Then, even though I protested that there wasn’t any way that Roger had planted anything in my house, they did a repeat performance to the interior.  I was shocked when they found a few tiny gadgets inside to add to the small group they’d uncovered outside.
“This,” Dad told me as he held up one of them, “is MY GPS tracker from your car.”  Nodding to show my understanding, he went on.  “It’s going back on, Ani, because there were two others in the same car.”  Wait, TWO?  “One is no doubt Rogers, but the other one?  Either he’s idiotic enough to double up, or someone else put it there.”
“I’d think it was him,” the other man offered.  “There were two of everything we found.  Close enough to make me think that he was using two simply to make sure he had a backup in case one failed.”  He shook his head at the stupidity.  “He’s not a rocket scientist, is he?”
“He teaches poetry,” Kelsey offered, bringing Dad and his friend lemonade.  “So, no, not a rocket scientist, and he also has the most pedantic ideas about Longfellow.”  I shook my own head at her irritation with Roger’s opinions on poetry.
The other devices were for sound, which means that he had probably heard JD and I from the first visit he made to my house and most definitely the sounds of our lovemaking.  Good, I thought, suck on that.  I invited the security man, whose name he reminded me was Kelvin to dinner, but he declined.
“My wife made reservations for tonight.”  I smiled and walked him to the door.  “I put your dad’s tracker back on your car.  Both of them are being tracked, and I’d advise you to keep them on.  This ex of yours, he doesn’t sound all that stable, but even if he is it’s safer.”  I agreed and thanked him for his time.  “Don’t mention it.  Just stay safe.”
“I’ll try,” I started to shut the door, but he stopped me.
“JD is a good guy,” my eyes widened and he grinned at me.  “Your dad filled me in.  I know him, and he’s a good one.  If you’re with him, you’re safe.”  Then he said goodbye and I finally closed the door.
Dad had invited Kelsey to dinner, like she needed an invite, and the three of us ate and then gathered around the Scrabble board I’d set up on the opposite end of the dining room table.  I was laughing as the two of them argued about the validity of a word when Pandi informed us that we had a guest.  Dad looked at me with shrewdness as I told it to let him in, and then as I sat at a table with my dad and Kelsey, JD walked in to meet my father for the first time.

Odwain! The goodest.
Tumblr media
Wow, featuring one of the more flattering drawings I’ve done of Odwain. Like last time, I’ll post all these guys separately and then do all the headshots in a masterpost. In the meantime buckle up for...a lot. (Thank you for giving me my favorite character.)
Full Name: Odwain Novak. In Ben Yit’gab, the Bennai language, his first name would be Oediwen, and it’s what his dad called him. His mother calls him Oddy and he does not like it.
Gender and Sexuality: Male and Bisexual
Pronouns: He/him
Ethnicity/Species: Odwain is a Ben-Aleth, a Human-Bennai hybrid, also called a mosshead if you’re in coarse company. His human mother Blanche Novak is mixed race. Odwain’s maternal grandfather came directly from Earth, Poland specifically, during one of the several accidental migrations of humans coming from Earth to The Road. His maternal grandmother is from a previous wave who were already settled on The Road by that time, but the family can trace her ancestry back to West Africa. Odwain’s father, Ashatov Novak, was a full-blooded Bennai, a plant-based halfling race. Ashatov took his wife’s last name.
Birthplace and Birthdate: Thinking about this trips me out man. Odwain was born in 1946, sometime in the summer, probably July or August, in Septor Secundis, a coastal, metropolitan city and the seat of The Road’s government. He’s 27 during his first adventure and right now, in Godslaughter, he is 69 (what the FUCK). He will live maybe 20 or 30 years longer than your average human, and is in better physical shape than a human would be at 69. He’s more like late 40’s or early 50’s.
Guilty Pleasures: A lot, probably - Odwain has just a bit of hedonistic streak just because he feels miserable so much of the time that he needs to feel good somehow. He smokes cigarettes for much of his life (but eventually quits), is a casual cannabis smoker and binge eats really truly terrible junk food (and has a bit of a gut because of it, but because he’s kind of lanky otherwise, he’s just kind of gourd-shaped). He likes beer, but doesn’t drink hard liqour all that often because he gets astronomically bad hangovers. Despite having a generally weak stomach, Odwain really likes frightfully spicy food, and his kids’ obligatory dad-gifts for him are probably hot sauces. When he’s not pounding down garbage, his favorite kind of cuisine is Thai. Not a guilty pleasure per say, but he also loves all things that have to do with insects, and when he and Rusty have a house together, Odwain takes up gardening as a hobby and plants an expansive garden of flora that are attractive to bees. (A Nice Thing: Odwain plants this garden when Rusty is pregnant because he found his love of insects through his father’s garden as a child, and wanted to give his kids the same opportunity) Odwain also maintains an apiary from the time that he’s living in a warehouse in the desert, to when he’s living with a partner and beyond. When he learns how to make Hot Honey it’s over for all of us. He has a modest collection of novelty bee-themed things that he’s amassed over the years, but he is not guilty about asserting his love of bees/wasps, like, at all. He’s also a little kinky but I’m not going into that.
Phobias: All of Odwain’s fears are existential - what if I push everyone away, existing in society is anxiety inducing, what if I’m just a bad person and my existence is making everything more difficult for functional people, etc. Though he’s kind of a sad fellow and has ideated suicide, and came very, VERY close to trying to kill himself after he dropped out of college, he also fears growing old and dying. I think death is more digestible to him if it’s on his own terms, but even then, I think what coaxed him off the edge was fear. If anything ever happened to his chosen romantic partner or any of his kids, he’d be besides himself, and is kind of one severe trauma and emotional breakdown away from becoming a bee-themed supervillian.
What They Would Be Famous For: Odwain is notable at a certain point in his career for being a pioneer in AI programming, and also for designing, building and patenting an invention called the Hercules Rig, which is basically a beetle-wing inspired jetpack. You can see it here. He holds the patent very closely and only allows it to be reproduced for recreation, construction, emergency rescue operations, etc. Odwain has taken a very firm stance on not allowing the military or any paramilitary organization to get their hands on it, though it has not stopped them from making shitty knock-offs that he is constantly suing people about.
What They Would Get Arrested For: Breaking and entering. Exploding something he shouldn’t. Buying illegal hazardous materials. Doing something petty that bites him in the ass.
OC You Ship Them With: To be honest there are not a lot of other characters besides Rusty that I ship him with. Bitter college rivals, thrown back together as late twenty-somethings, becoming better people together and learning to express empathy and vulnerability…it’s good. The only other character that I really go yeah, that’s the good stuff, is Jake’s character Finnick, who is kind of Odwain’s weird BFF and fellow mad scientist type. I don’t think they’d have a super stable relationship, and I think it would most likely be a “we yelled at each other and had weird sex enough that we like each other now” kind of scenario. But I do think they would come to love each other and have each other’s back to the death. Him and Hemlock, my dirty swamp witch who’s only picture was devoured during the great tumblr purge, also make a pretty fun couple for similar reasons. Iona too, but I think they are too explosive of personalities to ever find a stable middle ground. I also think he would find certain people attractive (August, Hare, Ganzrig, Ifechi the man I have spoken of but once, Jonquil in certain scenarios) but may not put himself out there to pursue them.
Neither of us have ever posted any art of her but here’s a few headshots of Finnick I did awhile ago, because she really is my favorite romantic partner for Odwain aside from Rusty, and is the only other one that’s really relevant in our games.
Tumblr media
OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Odwain is fairly physically fragile and to be honest I think that most people could kill him as long as they could get their hands on him - he’s very dexterous and has a lot of gadgets that let him get the upper hand, keep enemies at a distance or escape. He has a ranged fighting/add-spawn build so he is mostly out of direct harm unless he’s reeled in somehow. But uh, Odwain IS dead right now in Godslaughter, he died fighting an eldritch deity named Dreamer who sucked him into a nightmare dimension and flayed his soul out of his body. It’s ok though, as long as the party beats Dio, he’ll be fine. I didn’t cry you’re the one who’s crying.
Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Ok, so, first off HAHA Odwain canonically likes Transformers and collects them, which are a thing in circulation after the last human migration from earth in the 90’s. Imagine. Imagine your grown ass father with a genius level IQ and multiple patents collecting plastic robots. Him and Finnick have transformers sonas - ANYWAY, that aside, he doesn’t really read for pleasure, just information, and generally just puts on cable while he works for white noise (and in later years, whatever The Road’s TV streaming service is). Most of the media he consumes is incidental to him, but will get interested in strange things that pique his interest. He probably thinks true crime docs are neat and enjoys pulpy sci-fi stuff that he can complain about. Any documentary about bugs. He’d like Mystery Science Theatre if they had it around. He enjoys things that are the fun, good kind of “bad” and has a fairly high threshold for  disturbing imagery.
Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Odwain is that guy who makes 20 minute long youtube videos lampooning movies for “not making sense”. If there’s anything that breaks his suspension of disbelief, his attention and tolerance disintegrates, even if it’s just one of those things that needs to happen to move the plot along. It doesn’t really matter what genre it is, though he is most hard on sci-fi and fantasy. There is a tipping point for him, however, where he starts enjoying the thrill of blasting something and circles back around to enjoying it.
Talents and/or Powers: Odwain is only a little bitty bit magical, and only because Bennai are the most magical race on The Road. He has latent magical ability that allows him to sense magical signatures and incorporate magic into technology, and maybe cast a low level spell if he tries really hard. If he was in a high fantasy setting, he’d be an enchanter. His staff (the big lightbulb thing I draw him with sometimes), the Hercules Rig, his Wasp Suite (robotic wasps with an AI and different spells loaded into them) and any other devilish, bug-based weapons and utility objects do his work for him.
Why Someone Might Love Them: Odwain’s a bit of a tough walnut to crack because I think that he shines in moments of sincerity and vulnerability, but he has to, well, get there. He’s capable of very great, thoughtful acts of selflessness and compassion, and deeply desires meaningful relationships with other people, but he gets insecure about how he expresses himself and can clam up. He’s passionate, emotional and expressive, but has been put down for being so, and was probably a very brilliant, curious child who was beaten down into a somber adult. I actually think that, at some point in his childhood, he was not entirely unlike Whitty in the way that he was eager to share things with people and explore the world around him, which is why Odwain feels very protective of his grandson. I think the most lovable thing about him is that when he’s at his best, nothing can stop him - he’s extremely intelligent, diligent, creative and innovative. He truly, deeply loves making things, and making them better, and when he’s not in a crash, creates prolifically. What he loves, he loves deeply and without compromise, which makes Rusty, a person that could also be said of, a good match for him. I also think his cattiness makes him very witty, he’s a genuinely funny guy who can engage in some really goofy shenanigans when he’s feeling up for it.
Why Someone Might Hate Them: Oh, lots of reasons. Odwain is an acquired taste to many, or just not to many’s taste at all. He is very petty, blunt and catty, and as a young man is extremely bitter and negative. You’d be very hard pressed to get a positive statement about anything out of him between the ages of 16-25. He’s very confrontational, can become very loud and intense if it’s something that he feels is important, and is not afraid to cut people out of his life if he feels that they aren’t good for him. Sometimes, he will end relationships/friendships prematurely because of this. Being such, he is heavily prone to self-inflicted isolation. He has no childhood friends, and only kept in touch with one person from college. He just cuts and runs. Odwain’s self-loathing runs very deep, which makes it hard for him to accept, or ask for, emotional support or affection. And that can be hard on the people around him who care about him. His executive dysfunction can also be abysmal, making it seem like perhaps he is messy or lazy, but he’s just kind of a mess himself, hah.
A weird non-psychological one but I think is enough to get someone’s hackles up is that Odwain doesn’t like animals very much unless they are insects, invertebrates, etc. He finds mammals loud, messy and needy, and that “I’m the only one in my house that is allowed to be all of those things”.
How They Change: As Odwain ages and gains a stable support network of friends, his edges soften and he learns how to ask for help more effectively. He also learns how to better choose his battles, and how to exercise the compassion that he knows he has, but has been too insecure to utilize. He manages his mental health better, but is never entirely free of it, because you never really are. Most importantly, I think, he learns how to forgive the people who deserve forgiveness, and give people second chances, accepting that people can change. Which means the same can be said for him, too.
Why You Love Them: I’ve talked about this before, somewhere, I’m sure. Odwain is one of those characters that has a very big slice of my personality, and has a lot of my more negative traits, though they are ones we’re both working on. My first session with Odwain was a scene where Odwain’s dad died after being ill for a very long time, and as it happens, it was on father’s day, on the first or second father’s day after MY dad died, after several brutal months fighting with the cancer that eventually killed him. I had to put down the dice, so to speak, and for a short time, thought that Odwain might actually be a character that I scrapped completely. He came too close to something very painful and personal. I don’t remember how, exactly, but the solution to this problem of mine was that if he’s getting close to me on his own, then I might as well just let him in on everything. I can genuinely say that doing that has changed the way that I empathize with my characters and how I make them, and that there is something I share with Odwain that I don’t have with many of my other characters. Also, I like bees.

50 Tungsten Bullets Chapter 1: Fifty
Summary | Next
“Who did you get this from?” Jeebs asked.
Spiv leaned on the pawner’s counter. “Who?” he smirked. ”Ain’t no ‘who.’ Found it ourselves, old man. Though, I might be willing to part with the where for something extra.”
“I ain’t that old.”
“Twenty years my senior at least,” Spiv snickered. “Makes you old in my book.”
Truth be told, Spiv wasn’t sure as to the exact age of Mr. Jeebs. Looked just as wrinkled and grumpy as he did the day Spiv tried to steal the shoes off his feet as a kid. Spiv got caught and beat till he was seeing stars. But by the fourth attempt, Jeebs sat him down with some lukewarm soup and taught him how to make an honest living. Well, a more honest living.
Jeebs stared at the immaculate metal cylinder with a solemn glare. He didn’t even bother responding with one of his famous ten K curses. The device was silver in color, with a gold tint and despite the dim sunlight peeking through the cracks in Jeeb’s shack, it lit up the room as if being struck by mid day. Fifty thousand kollars, easy. Spiv hadn’t the foggiest what the thing he found was, but old world tech like that would fetch a pretty penny from collectors. He brought it to Jeebs because, fuck, even he got a little sentimental at times. Spiv figured it’d only be right for Jeebs to make the first offer.
“Put it back,” Jeebs spoke without looking up.
“Sun bake your brain while I’ve been gone?” Spiv pushed off the ancient dead wood table and paced in a circle. “Shit, Jeebs. My crew almost died a dozen times over to get that thing to town and now you’re saying put it back? This could really change things for us if we find the right buyer.”
“Ain’t gonna be no buyers, put it back,” Jeebs growled.
“Old man, I got nothing but respect for you. You’ve done a lot for us over the years, but now you’re talkin’ about taking money out of our pocket.”
Spiv reached for the device. Jeebs slammed his hand down on its casing with such force that it knocked a crystal on the shelf behind him to the floor, shattering in a myriad of iridescent colors.
“Take it past Yonder’s Mountain, to the bunker where you found it, and put it back.”
“How’d you-”
Jeebs eyes burned beneath droopy lids and a thick brow. “Because I’m the one who put it there.”
“You couldn’t have,” Spiv stammered. “The hull was sealed for centuries. We checked the logs.”
“User authenticated,” a synthesized voice spoke from the device. There was a hiss as white fog seeped out. A panel popped open to reveal a hollow interior.
Spiv’s eyes bulged like a rock rabbit that’s been left dead two days on a dirt road. “Shit… You’re an old worlder. One the immortals.”
“Ain’t all that. Can still die, same as any of you. Just don’t get any older is all.”
Spiv’s gaze drifted back to the capsule. Jeebs turned it around so he could see. Inside was a massive revolver and a single shell with a name on it. Gun like that put everything in the crew’s arsenal to shame. Probably put everything in the whole town of Bakersville to shame.
“It’s my gun,” Jeebs said. “Hideo model 12 hybrid, fifty cal. Made to fire tungsten rounds with ionized neon core. Could punch a hole the size of my fist in a tank from a quarter mile off. And that casing is from when I shot the man who killed my wife.”
“You could buy all of Bakersville with that thing. Fuckn’ shit.”
Jeebs looked away. “And all it cost me was two tickets to Fluorescent.”
“Bull crap,” Spiv laughed. “Old man Jeebs living it up with the rich folks on Fluorescent? I can’t even picture it.”
“It’s the truth. Would have been. If, well...”
“Sorry about your wife.”
“No need to trouble yourself,” Jeebs said, rubbing his nose. “Happened before your great great grandaddy could piss himself.”
“Why leave the gun in the ground?”
“Killed two dozen men with that thing. Didn’t want to be reminded of the kind of man it made me. Stuck it in a casimir vacuum chamber and left it at my wife’s grave.”
A minute of silence passed between them. Jeebs refused to look at the capsule. Spiv couldn’t look away.
“What does it take? To become immortal, that is,” Spiv asked.
Jeebs let out a sigh. “Wouldn't tell a soul even if I knew. Wars were fought over that question. Wouldn’t want to be the cause of the next.”
“Does that mean you’re the last one left? Thought all the immortals were rounded up and killed off in the last conflict.”
“No, not all. They just keep a low profile, like me. Can’t be having any more joining the club neither. Just pray that you never meet one. Seen what happens when people live long enough to lose their humanity.”
Spiv took a deep breath, resting his hands behind his head. “Could just as easily turn you in and buy a ticket to Fluorescent myself.”
“Do what you will,” Jeebs spoke. “You’re a good kid. Wouldn’t want my head to pay for nobody else’s trip to Flour. But I won’t be goin’ easy. Last thing my wife said to me before she died was to live a long and beautiful life. And I don’t intend to let her know how cruel that was to say.”
Spiv cracked a smile. “Wouldn’t dream of throwing my father off a cliff to save my own skin. Might never met him, but you’re sure as hell the closest thing I’ve got.”
Jeebs wiped his eyes. “Don’t say shit like that. Might even make this ol’ life worth living.”
“But what about the gun? Even if I put it back, someone else is just gonna come along and find it.”
“I know.” Jeebs said. “Just get it out of my sight. It’s yours. Spent too much time remembering things I’d hoped to forget.”
“Ey, Spiv,” a wary voice spoke from behind.
“Well if it ain’t lil’ Kit,” Jeebs chuckled. “Still think you’re better off runin’ with Spiv than workin’ the brothel with your mum.”
“Fuck off, Jeebs. But seriously,“ she said, tugging at Spiv’s arm. “We gotta go. Like right now.”
Spiv glared at her. “What’d you do?”
“I got kinda bored waiting and I mighta scammed a few shady pricks. Now let’s go!”
“Weren’t wearing black masks, were they?” Spiv asked.
“Yeah. Why?”
“Fuck, Kit! That’s the Faceless Gang from the down south. I warned you about them. Those fuckers will straight up kill you. Like chopped up into little bits and fed to livestock kinda dead.”
Kit chewed on her cheek. “...Well that’s even more reason why we need to go.”
“Take the door out back,” Jeebs said. Right as the one in the front was knocked clean off its hinges by a large, black boot.
Spiv scooped up the capsule and bolted. “Find the crew and skip,” he said to Kit as they crept out of the shack. “Not the usual place. Second cave past the landfill. Got it?”
“Yeah. What about you?”
“I’m staying for a bit. Gotta see if old man Jeebs needs my help.”
Kit nodded. She pulled her scarf around her face and dashed off. Like lightning on a sunny day the kids used to call her, and for good reason. Spiv breathed a little easier. Ice cube’s chance in winter on Sebrum anyone’d catch Kit when she got going.
Spiv peaked between shelves filled with Jeeb’s junk. Just enough to see a cloaked figure in all black strutting towards the old man, an intimidating gun at his hip.
“Lookin’ for a little roach that ran away with my money,” the stranger said. “Wouldn’t happened to seen where it went, would you pawn man?”
The man in black spoke through some sort of filter. His voice sounded distorted, robotic, like that of the AI in Jeeb’s capsule.
“Don’t do business with roaches.” Jeebs eyed the man from where he sat. “If you’re here to buy or sell, then we can talk.”
The man in black stepped closer and put both hands on the counter. “Well I’ll be. You are the spittin’ image of the man that killed the ol’ boss Joey Iron Rod. Grandaddy o’ yours? Grandaddy’s granddaddy?”
“Wouldn’t know nothin’ ‘bout it.”
“Nah. ‘Cause I know for fact the fuck never made spawn. You are the man that killed Joey Iron Rod. Woulda thought time’d do my work for me. Guess the only way to make sure a job is done is to do it yourself, right?” the stranger laughed.
“Might have a point there. Figured the rest of you immortal cunts got blown up in the wars with the rest.” Jeebs reached for a shotgun under his desk.
“Nah see, the old old gang made it through the wars alright. Hid out in the desert, got by. ‘Course, really should be thanking you. Made picking them off myself a whole lot easier.” The stranger leaned in closer. “Let you in on a secret. Reason my gang wear’s masks is so I’ll always be on top. Just gotta purge a couple cunts and call myself something new. ‘Course, now that you know, I’ma have to kill you.”
“Best move your failed fetal acohol abortion ass along,” Jeebs said. “This is my town. Been here forty years. Anything happens to me, posse of thirty to three hundred be after you.”
The man in black stepped away, turning his back, arms raised in a V. “Town might be yours, but the whole world of Sebrum is mine. I am its god. Its immortal ruler. Anyone who stands against my rule will be-”
Before the stranger could finish his sentence, Jeebs landed two rounds of buckshot in his back. The man stumbled from the impact, but he just laughed.
“Gonna need more than that to kill me,” the man in black spoke.
That voice made Spiv the coldest he’d ever felt. Tasting ice once when he was seven was now in second place. He swallowed, hard and dry.
The stranger rolled up a dark sleeve. Underneath was a metal arm. It gleamed like the capsule Spiv clutched in his hands.
“While you been playing shop keep, I’ve been quite productive with my time,” the stranger said, admiring his body. “Took a few generations of scavengers to collect all this. Enough old world tech to make that ol’ cyborg Joey Iron Rod green with envy. Count yourself honoured. You’re the first to see this hand in the better part of a century.”
He raised his palm to Jeebs.
Jeebs shoved another two rounds in his gun and took aim.
“Your wife screamed bloody murder as Joey split ‘er in two with his iron rod,” the man in black chuckled. “Thought I’d let you know, for when you meet ‘er again.”
There was a soft wine as capacitors discharged. A red light shined from the stranger’s hand, bathing the shop in blood red. Jeebs fired two shots.
Spiv blinked. The next thing he knew, the shack was in flames and Jeebs was on the ground in two pieces. Spiv shook. He’d feared for his life many a time before, but nothing quite compared to this. He wasn’t one to heed monsters. That was, until seeing one in metal flesh.
The man in black strutted out the way he came, whistling to himself. Spiv wanted to go after him. Wanted to take him from behind and smash his deranged face in. But Spiv was scared. So scared. Too scared to move. He crawled out of the rubble, capsule in hand, tears in his eyes and a tremble in his step.
It was night when Spiv returned to Jeeb’s shack. The poor thing was looted to completion in hours and the rest burned to the ground. A few people stood around a mound out front with a stone on top. Under normal circumstances, if someone fucked with this town, there’d be a posse after them in no time flat, for better or for worse. How places kept their peace and independence. Nothing like that tonight. By now, everyone had heard the rumors of what the Faceless Gang did to Westbrook Oasis a few miles south. Rumors Spiv was certain to be true.
Spiv adjusted his belt. He wasn’t used to the weight of fifty tungsten rounds quite yet. Cost him one thousand kollars each. His hand went to the cloth wrapped revolver resting in a holster at his side. The barrel alone nearly reached his knee. He pulled his hat a little lower, spat and walked off into the night. Word was the Faceless Gang was headed up to Jepsum. As luck would have it, so was he.

Meet 500 Startups’ 26th batch of startups
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following TechCrunch’s coverage of 500 Startups’ 25th batch (and numbers 24, 23, 22, and 21, in case you wanted to go back in time), today we’re saying hello to  the accelerator’s 26th cohort.
500 Startups, in case you weren’t aware, is a seed-stage accelerator and a collection of venture funds. The group, now with a few dozen accelerator batches under its belt, has several thousand companies in its universe. 500’s 26th cohort contains 29 companies, including a handful that we’d already heard of (Juked.gg, to pick one).
Data, diversity
Before we get to the startups themselves, a few notes. To get a handle on the companies included in the batch, TechCrunch spoke with Aaron Blumenthal, a venture partner at the firm. After sharing a number of batch metrics with TechCrunch, we pressed for a bit more detail on the makeup of the startups in the group.
Here’s a hybrid of our notes, and his details (condensed and edited for clarity), on the batch that the venture partner called “another rung on the ladder of our diversity and inclusion state of mind”:
37% of the startups are international. According to Blumenthal, “this particular batch from the ‘outside United States perspective’ is a little bit smaller — we usually see north of 50% outside the United States.”
30% of the companies’ founding teams include a woman. TechCrunch asked Blumenthal if that number was up, flat or down, to which he responded that 500’s “average is usually in the mid 30s or so. Our last batch, for example, was 26% female. And this one is more [in] that direction which, of course, we are a fan of.”
70% of the founding teams of the batch “have one or more founders who identify as a racial minority,” according to the firm.
It would be interesting to see a more granular breakdown for future cohorts, but the information provided was more than I expected, and the numbers a bit better. And on the subject of numbers, Crunchbase has recorded 215 exits for 500 Startups. From its accelerator, 500 cites TalkDesk and Shippo as highlights.
Turning to mechanics, 500 Startups invests $150,000 apiece into its accelerator companies for 6% of their equity, and charges a $37,500 for the program itself. So, in effect, it’s a bit less capital for the same ownership percentage.
What else? Just that we’re walking into demo day season. 500 Startups will host the showcase for its 26th batch on March 19. Y Combinator will hold its own on March 23 and 24. The Techstars website defeated my hunt for its next demo day, but in the name of fairness, it’s probably hosting one around the same time somewhere in the world.
Here’s the list of companies in batch 26, with small notes from 500 on what they do:

Trash Warrior: Offers on-demand junk removal services for businesses. Customers can book services online for affordable pricing and reliable quality.
Userpilot: Helps software product managers personalize the in-app experience across the user journey at scale.
Living in the unicorn era as we have now for some time, it’s easy to lose track of the earliest-stages of startup investment. But accelerators do have a history of helping birth some impressive companies. So it’s worth paying attention. More when we get to the various demo days.

Chapter 11
Ghosts
Chapter 10 - Chapter 12
It was as they walked into the building that Jordan started seriously wondering why he’d agreed to this. Then again, Shiro had been pretty clear in saying that it’d be a “good learning experience for all of them.”
Coran had called the planet Deyra, and it was essentially the planetary equivalent of the north pole when it came to Galra territory. It was also the only inhabitable place for “nearly fifty lightyears in any direction” according to him, so it was more urbanized than anything.
At the same time, urban wasn’t exactly how Jordan would describe the place. The various aliens passing by in any direction sometimes threw weird looks at them, though that was probably because they were all in their flight suits sans the helmets.
Coran stopped, blinking a few times at the sight of the market-scrapyard hybrid ahead of them, saying “Well, it certainly looks a bit different than the last time I was here.” He sounded a little sheepish.
Jordan stifled a groan. I knew this was a bad idea.
Shiro seemed to read his mind, giving him a look before saying “We might have better luck we split up. Eva, you come with Coran and I. Jordan, Stan, Koji, stay together. Let us know if you find anything on the list.”
The list consisted of an assortment of food (sugar, salt, things like that; apparently some things were universal), the alien equivalent of laundry detergent, and something Jordan had no idea how to pronounce or even read, given that it was apparently one of those things that didn’t have a direct translation.
Coran said it was essentially fuel for the castle’s thermal-regulator, though, and had emphasized on it being the most important thing on the list—even though he’d also said there was enough usable stuff left to last a few phoebs. The same went for the laundry supplies.
Blue had confirmed that a phoeb was basically the intergalactic equivalent of a month. Apparently it took a bit of math to figure out, and giant mechanical lions didn’t like math too much. Unless they were Green, anyways—hence how Blue knew.
Speaking of green, Koji looked…well, better would be stretching it, and it wasn’t even by much, but he didn’t look as out-of-it as he had last night.
At the same time, now Stan seemed a bit space-y.
When satisfied with how thin the crowd was in the area of the market they’d wandered into, he glanced sideways at them, asking “You guys okay?”
Both stopped, looking back at him with near-identical expressions Jordan couldn’t name, before Stan said “Yeah, it’s just…” He made a vague motion with one hand. “Yesterday.”
“I know what you mean.”
It had taken a few minutes for him to convince himself to get up out of bed when he’d woken up, having been feeling dazed in a way where everything seemed fuzzed-over but also way too clear at the same time. He was also pretty sure he might’ve pulled a muscle in his left arm in helping move some debris that had partially blocked one of the tunnels in the Balmera, or maybe while doing all that fancy dodging while they’d been struggling to fight robo-lizard five-on-one.
Honestly, he was having trouble trying to convince himself that he’d even done all of that.
“Think we’d have any luck there?” Koji pointed to one shop that vaguely resembled a place where someone would find car supplies on Earth, from what Jordan could see of the inside.
“Worth a try,” Stan agreed.
It looked promising at first—there were a few canisters that had the same label as what was the fuel for the castle. Then they brought two up to the counter, and everything went downhill, starting with the cashier staring blankly at the pastel-colored paper slips that were Altean currency.
“Is this some kind of joke?” she asked finally, scowling. “I don’t even know what planet this is from!”
“Uh—Altea?” Jordan attempted.
The cashier rolled all four eyes. “Yeah, and I’m the queen of Markazia. Now get lost, before I call security!”
All three of them scrambled outside and, around the nearest pseudo-street corner for good measure. Stan didn’t waste any time in tapping his gauntlet. “Guys? We just hit a snag.”
“If by that you mean we’re broke, we just found that out,” was Eva’s irritated response. “Shiro said to meet us back at the entrance.”
Jordan caught the last bit of a suggestion from Shiro when they did get there, being “There’s bound to be a pawn shop here somewhere.”
“We’d have to sort through the castle first,” was Coran’s answer. “And that by itself would take an entire movement at the least. We can’t afford to stay in one place that long, what with the Galra searching for us.”
He’d spoken a bit quieter than usual, though usual was something Jordan only recognized already since Coran always talked like he was announcing something.
They were halfway to where the castle had been set down in one of the very few fields there were (temporarily, Coran had assured the copper-faced alien that had confronted them almost as soon as they’d gotten out) before Stan asked “You okay?”
Coran almost tripped on his own feet, momentarily wide-eyed, before laughing a bit. “It’s nothing, I just—I guess it’s finally sunk in just…just how long Altea’s been gone for, if the currency isn’t even considered a rarity anymore.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“For starters, I suppose the staff rooms could be cleared out,” Coran was going on. His voice faltered momentarily when he added “It’s not like anyone’s left to claim anything, unless there’s anything any of you want in there.”
“And how do you know that there’s a place that’ll trade the junk for that GAC stuff?” Jordan asked.
“It’s not junk, it’s antiques!” Coran retorted hotly, before clearing his throat. “I happen to know a few places, though I’ll be going there by myself. Wouldn’t be safe for you all.”
Eva didn’t get a chance to ask what those few places were before Shiro cut in. “We also need to look for a solid source of intel.”
“That too,” Coran agreed, nodding.
“Intel on what?” Jordan sounded about as lost as Eva was feeling now.
“Fleet movements, supply lines, things like that,” Shiro clarified. “The tactical info we have now is pretty outdated.”
That got a nervous laugh from the advisor. “And that’s not a lie either. I don’t thinking raiding warships would be too productive in the long-run, though.”
“We might not have to do that.” He looked sideways at Coran. “We have the commander for this whole sector held prisoner right now.”
It took Eva a few seconds for what he said to register with what she knew. Next to her, Jordan went rigid. “Hang on a second, he’s still here?!”
“Frozen in a cryopod on the brig, rest assured,” was the quick response from Coran. Koji had paled several shades, and Stan’s expression was unreadable. There had been a flash of alarm from Red for a few seconds, before it simmered down into wariness.
“Though I doubt interrogation attempts will get us anywhere, either.” Coran scowled slightly at nothing in particular with that statement, before adding “Though there might just be a way for us to at least get some information out of him.”
He took the dubiously-curious looks as an incentive to go on. “We could try to use the same technology used to preserve King Alfor’s memories. There’s no telling how reliable the results would be, since it wasn’t designed with prisoner interrogation in mind.”
“You lost me at the first part,” Stan said flatly. “And I’m not going anywhere near that guy.”
“Well it’s…more of an AI than anything, but like I mentioned, it has a copious amount of his memories. So it’s almost like talking to the real deal, just—not quite.”
Eva toned out the rest of the conversation. That they had tech to do stuff like that was both cool and creepy at the same time. Where would that stuff be in here, anyways?
Red hesitated, uncertain, before conveying the idea of probably being able to recognize at least what part of the castle it was in.
Well, she’d been waiting for a better chance to explore the castle more anyways—the bedrooms, storage rooms, shuttle/star-racer hangar, library, and Lion hangars probably only made up a fraction of the place.
It wasn’t that hard sneaking out of the room, with how Coran and Shiro were still going over the potential interrogation plan. What was hard was telling which hallway was which. The main reason she knew how to navigate between her bedroom, the bridge, training deck, and the dining hall was the sequence of left and right turns after a set number of staircase climbing/descending, and directions from her Lion.
A glance through one larger-than-usual doorway led her to find that the castle also had a (unfortunately empty) pool, and another room toward the Green Lion’s hangar was brightly-lit and featured a few planters set against the walls, so it was probably supposed to be a greenhouse.
“Am I at least getting close to it?” she asked aloud after a few minutes. Red was unsure; he didn’t know the inside of the castle in terms of which hallway went where, because he never had a reason to pay too much attention. Eva scowled. “Well, now you do!”
The downside about looking more at the walls than what was ahead was that it was hard to see if someone was coming. At the same time, corners were tricky like that.
Coran looked just as surprised to see her. “Ah, Eva! I was wondering where you’d vanished off to.”
“Uh—well I—”
“No need to worry, I understand perfectly. In fact, King Alfor and I used to sneak out of tactical meetings all the time! Though now that I think about it, a few misunderstandings probably could’ve been avoided if we hadn’t…”
“Actually I was looking for that AI thing you were talking about,” she managed to get out.
“Oh.” Coran looked surprised for a second. “I was just heading down there myself, actually. I think Allura might be there, since she’s not in her room.”
It didn’t take long to reach the hallway Red had described. As it turned out, Eva had walked right by it. Twice.
The Lion had at least seemed apologetic for that.
And there was something deeply disorienting about going from a metal hallway to a field of flowers.
She could still hear that the floor was still metal, when Coran had not-quite-jogged over to where Allura was sitting on the floor, and she definitely didn’t smell any flowers—but it all looked real, right down to the clouds moving slowly across the holographic sky.
As for what (who) was next to Allura…Eva couldn’t be too sure on details, considering that he was blue-hued and translucent, but if she had to guess, that was the AI of King Alfor. He was smiling a bit in an amused way at Allura’s protest of “Coran, I feel fine now!” before turning a bit.
His brows raised slightly before asking “Am I correct in guessing that’s one of our new paladins over there?”
Allura looked over her shoulder, expression brightening. “Yes, that’s Eva.” It took a bit for Eva to notice that Allura was trying to motion her over, with how her focus had been fixed on the AI; she felt her face heat up a bit while she closed the distance.
She could definitely see the resemblance between Allura and the ghostly figure up close—they had the same eyes, for one. “I trust Red isn’t giving you too much trouble?” the AI queried, brow quirked slightly.
“N-Not really. I mean, he was being kind of annoying a few days ago.” There was a flash of indignation in response to that.
That got a laugh. “I expected that much. We’ll have to share stories some other time.”
It was when the two of them were halfway down to the brig (Coran had asked the mice to make sure Allura made it all the way to her room; they’d saluted in response, though Eva gave them a pointed glare to which got innocent looks in response) before she said, “He built the Lions, right?”
“That’s correct,” Coran replied without looking.
“Did he fly one of them too?”
Coran paused that time, but only for a second. “He did, yes.”
Eva didn’t press for more details; his voice had quieted just a bit, but the distant look on his face gave an impression that he didn’t want to talk about it right now.
Given how Stan had reacted earlier, and what he’d said earlier, seeing him with the others in the detainment area wasn’t something Eva was expecting.
It also looked like Coran had been getting ready for this beforehand, given the various objects that were left by the stasis-pod Sendak was being held in.
“Like I said before, this technology wasn’t built with interrogating prisoners in mind,” Coran reminded while sticking a few small devices onto the glass. Attached by wires to said devices was what looked like a giant glass cylinder with a keypad attached. “And there’s no telling if the information we get will be up-to-date with what’s happening now.”
“Even if it isn’t, it’ll at least be a point of reference,” Shiro reasoned. Coran held the gaze for a few seconds longer before sighing, putting a sequence in on the keypad.
A few long moments of silence went by before Jordan said “I don’t think it’s working.”
Coran ducked to look inside the glass. “No, it is, just…very, very slowly. I highly doubt Sendak’s a willing participant in this.”
Eva tensed. “Wait, I thought he was knocked out!”
“He is, don’t worry!” Coran reassured hastily. “It’s just that—well, while these pods can put someone into a complete physical stasis, it can’t entirely turn off the mind, so to speak. It’s more like being in a fairly deep slumber.”
“How long is this going to take?” Stan asked.
“Typically, at least half a quintant. But I have a feeling this case will be longer than that.”
Jordan groaned. “You mean we’re gonna be standing here all day?”
“The process is self-automated once it’s started, so no. Which is good, because I’ve got approximately a million duties to attend to. Between that Galra crystal infecting our system, and then fighting off those ships and performing the Balmeran rejuvenation ceremony, the Castle of Lions has taken quite a beating.”
So long as they didn’t have to stay here. “I’m, uh—gonna go…look around the castle some more,” Eva managed to get out. “Jordan, you wanna come?”
He shrugged, though was stopped short by Coran’s “Ah, no-can-do, Number Two.” Before either of them could protest, he elaborated with “Jordan, you’re plenty capable with your bayard already. And Eva had a good point in saying that the aiming mechanics between the two of them are quite different.”
“So what am I supposed to do, then?”
“Come help me, of course! I was originally going to have Stan help out, but he seems to have made himself scarce already.”
“But I don’t…ugh, fine.” Jordan seemed to deflate a bit, before looking sideways. “Hey, uh, Shiro? You don’t have to stay here, you know.”
“Someone has to keep an eye on this.”
There was a pause, before Coran shrugged. “It’s not going to be the most exciting thing in the universe, but if anything does happen, come find me.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“Shiro thinks it’ll work, but I doubt it,” Stan went on, turning the piece of machinery that he and Koji were in the midst of rewiring a bit on the crate that was serving as a makeshift table. Koji gave a neutral sound in response, turning to reach for the wrench that was off to the side, before stopping.
Stan looked at him. “Koji? Something wrong?”
He paused, biting his lip and looking sideways at the star-racer. “I was just thinking—the hyperdrive probably would’ve been better off as a separate module instead of being linked directly to the reactors.”
He thought that over for a few seconds. “That…sounds like it might actually be better, but then we’d really have to take her apart.”
Not to mention probably have to rework everything to account for the new module.
The hyperdrive aside, there was also the matter of fuel, which had been why Stan had asked Coran if they could bring a crystal from the Balmera with them. (The aforementioned object was currently inside of the crate being used as a table.)
If they could figure out how to get the engines to run off of a crystal, the matter of running out of fuel during a race wouldn’t be a worry anymore, even with the hyperdrive.
At the same time, Stan had a nagging feeling that having to design new engines altogether wasn’t off of the metaphorical table, and he had absolutely no idea on how to even start on something like that.
Koji paused again when Stan mentioned that, tapping two fingers against the surface of the crate. “Coran said that the crystal from the Galra ship has information on it. If Shiro’s plan really doesn’t work, maybe there’s something on that we could use?” Stan shrugged in response before starting to screw the cover for the machine part back on.
At least, he would’ve, if the lights hadn’t suddenly gone out.
“Maybe a fuse blew out somewhere?” Koji suggested hesitantly.
Stan shrugged. “Wouldn’t surprise me. A lot of the stuff in here probably needs replacing.” He stood up, fumbling a bit in the darkness to avoid tripping over any of the various things they’d left on the floor. “Guess now’s a good time to see if there really is anything useful on that crystal.”
He tried to ignore how weird it felt saying that.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Jordan had a vague idea on why Coran had wanted Stan to help him out after a few minutes. “Okay, explain to me how these things can bring someone back from the brink in a day, but can’t clean themselves?”
Coran guffawed. “Self-cleaning pods, that’s a good one!” Jordan gave him a withering look, but Coran went on, oblivious to it. “Y’know, this kind of reminds me of my time as a young cadet myself.”
And that got Jordan’s attention. “Wait, you what?”
The mustached Altean glanced over his shoulder at him for a few seconds. “Right, I remember Shiro mentioning that you’re one too—well, for Earth’s military, anyways. But yes, I had just enlisted in the Altean space aeronautics sub-tech nano-weaponry unit—SASTNWU for short, bit of a mouthful—and I was sent off to boot camp. Our sergeant had us cleaning cryopods day and night. I got so good at it, I earned my first set of stripes!”
That actually didn’t sound too different from how Jordan ended up making a name for himself, aside from William’s grandson, except his forte was marksmanship.
Coran was still prattling on, but everything seemed muffled all of a sudden. And cold. And—and since when had the pod closed?!
“Wha’—hey! Coran!”
He wasn’t sure if Coran had heard him or not, considering that the probably-malfunctioning pod was retracted back into the floor seconds later. Blue seemed more bemused than alarmed, which Jordan took as a reassuring thing.
For about two minutes, anyways. It was completely dark and steadily getting colder as the seconds were dragging on, and while Jordan was pretty sure there was more room in here than there was in the Arrow’s turret, he was still starting to feel claustrophobic—then the pod jolted and the next thing he knew he was looking at one very startled Coran, who was quick to open it up.
Jordan almost tripped in scrambling over to the middle of the room, stammering out “Th-That thing j-just closed on me!” between chattering teeth.
“Are you sure you didn’t just trip and fall in?” In response to the scathing look given, he added “No judgement, it happens. Why, I remember a time when—”
“N-No! I was already s-standing in it when it shut!”
“Alright, alright, don’t get your boots in a bunch.” Coran put his hands up a bit defensively. “They’re probably malfunctioning too. Just have to reset the systems and they’ll be in working order again.”
“If you s-say so,” Jordan grumbled, starting toward the door. “I’m going down to the t-training deck.”
“I think I’ll join you in that.” Coran matched his pace. “Might as well reset those systems too, just in case.”
They made it about halfway there before they saw Eva bolt around a corner at the end of the hall, running toward them, and the reason for her running was shown to be what looked to be…the training robot, sword in hand.
“Oh dear,” was all Coran said before turning to also run—and that, on top of the fact that the memory of the last time Jordan had seen that thing was still pretty fresh in his mind, was enough to convince him to run too.
“What the heck did you do to tick it off?” he asked after they’d turned another corner.
“I don’t know it just came out of nowhere and went nuts!” she shot back without pause.
“Ah, it’s not the first time—something like this happened,” Coran got out. “Of course, it was—back when there was always someone in the control room ready to disable any malfunctioning, uh, functions.”
“So what do we do?!”
Coran didn’t answer verbally, instead looking ahead. Jordan did too—there was a set of doors ahead, but the see-through part showed open space beyond a short hall: it was an airlock. Next to the doors was a console. The advisor promptly shoved both him and Eva to the side before hitting the center button on the aforementioned console.
The robot was pretty much dragged out, the doors being shut again as soon as it was past them. “Not really…what I wanted to happen…but oh well,” was all he said in response to their incredulous looks, between breaths. “There’s plenty…plenty more of them.”
“Well I’m not going back that way anytime soon,” Eva muttered, shuddering slightly. “I wasn’t even in there.” A pause. “Wait, where are Stan and Koji?”
“Uh…well, they were in the shuttle bay, but it looks like they’re both in the Green Lion’s hangar now.” Coran paused. “Probably checking that Galra crystal for info.”
“Wait, how does that even work?”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“I don’t think I’ll ever know how this was figured out,” Stan muttered, staring at the screen that was now showing an array of code.
“I don’t think I will either, to be honest,” Koji agreed. “But we won’t know unless we try to figure it out.”
“True.”
Even if there wasn’t any relevant-to-the-situation information here, there was bound to be at least something they could learn from. Green agreed wholeheartedly with that sentiment; she’d directed him to the equipment needed to get at whatever information was on that crystal, which was a bunch of sensors connected to wires hooked into a computer, and that aforementioned computer was then linked up to his tablet.
“Alright, I think they’re all set,” he said, glancing over his shoulder at where Stan was waiting by the desk. “Hit the switch on the left.”
Two things happened at once then, the first being that the wires lit up; Koji assumed that meant they were doing what they were supposed to be doing.
The second was that he abruptly found that his feet weren’t on the floor anymore. “Uh…you didn’t hit the switch for the artificial gravity, did you?”
“I don’t think there’d be a switch for that in the first place!” Stan shot back while grabbing onto one of the computer monitors.
The crystal was already out of reach, and so was the moveable platform that it had been placed on. Green wasn’t quite in reach either; she seemed somewhere between amused and concerned right now, and Koji wasn’t sure how exactly to perceive that.
Wait. Green.
“Uh, a little help please?” he asked, trying to turn to look toward the Lion’s head. She didn’t move, if only because she didn’t know how to—she couldn’t access the castle’s systems by herself.
“No, I mean—”
A flash of realization shot over before he could finish, and she carefully lifted one giant metal paw. Very sharp claws being included, of course. Green made note of the concern, and adjusted the angle so that the tips were facing toward the ceiling.
When Coran had been going on about the functions of the castle, he’d touched on the gravity-generator enough for Koji to have learned that the hangars all had separate, smaller ones that kicked in when all the doors were closed off. Something about helping maintain an artificial atmosphere when the hangar’s main entrance/exit was open.
Either way, if he could just get one of the side-doors to open, the main generator would override the hangar one. Then again, that was only if that one wasn’t being weird, too.
The good news was that his aim was perfect.
The bad news was that the main gravity generator kicked in abruptly. Which is to say, he hit the floor hard enough to knock the breath out of him. Everything else that hadn’t been fastened to the floor also came crashing down, hopefully-not-delicate equipment included.
Then he heard “What the heck happened in here?” from the other side of the hangar.
Jordan was the one who had spoken, and both Eva and Coran had matching expressions of confusion; all three of them had stopped in front of the doorway.
“The gravity generator either turned off, or bugged out,” Koji replied.
“And the lights in the shuttle hangar went out earlier,” Stan supplied.
Coran grimaced. “Considering the other issues that are cropping up just now, I’m starting to think that the Galra crystal did more damage than I first thought.”
“So let’s get rid of it,” Eva said.
The advisor shook his head. “Wouldn’t do any good. The damage was done the moment Sendak plugged it into the castle. I’ll probably have to do another full system reboot just to flush everything.”
“Wait, wasn’t Shiro still down there?”
“As far as I know, he still is,” Coran affirmed. “We’d all best stick together in case anything else malfunctions on us.”
Coran had a point, and Green agreed with him. But that didn’t mean Koji exactly liked the idea of going to that specific area in the castle at that exact moment.
Stan tapped his shoulder, muttering “Just don’t think about it.”
And he didn’t. At least, not until they actually reached that hall. At the same time, Shiro stammering half-coherent sentences was what really had everyone’s attention—as was the fact that Sendak wasn’t even there.
He actually wasn’t in the castle at all anymore, given that Shiro ejected the stasis pod into space right before they’d gotten there. (He actually sounded scared when he’d mentioned hearing the commander’s voice, even though there was no way that should’ve even been possible.)
“Okay, I’m starting to think these might not be typical malfunctions,” Coran said quietly, eyes narrow.
“What do you mean by—” Stan started, only to be cut off by a console beeping a few times.
“Oh now what?” Jordan exclaimed.
Coran didn’t reply, instead taking off back down the hall. They almost literally ran into Allura halfway there, looking disheveled. “Coran, what’s going on?”
“I—I don’t know!” They all stormed onto the bridge, right as the castle exited the wormhole.
The viewscreens definitely had some sort of UV-blocking function, and light shielding, given that they were dangerously close to a star.
Allura all but lunged for the pedestal, colliding with the barrier that abruptly formed around it hard enough to stumble back. There was a flicker inside of the barrier, and then there was someone standing there.
Koji didn’t recognize him, not really, but there was a sharp intake of breath from Coran, Allura seemed to physically wilt for a moment, and the burst of emotion from Green translated to…something that left Koji with a suspicion that the Lion had just short-circuited.
“Father, what are you doing?” Allura asked, her voice hoarse. “If the castle doesn’t change course, we’ll all perish!”
“I know. That is my intention.”
“What?! But why?”
The hologram turned to face them, expression blank. “Don't you see, dear daughter? Zarkon can never be defeated. He's been ruling for ten-thousand decaphoebs.”
“But we must continue to fight!”
“Fight for what? It is all over for Altea. You don’t have to live a lifetime of war.”
The hologram flickered a few times, distorting, before the voice spoke again—this time with a completely different tone. “Allura, my AI has been corrupted. You must disconnect my power source!”
It only made a perfect amount of sense that the one legitimate (legitimate in that Koji could make sense of how it was put together, mostly) AI present in the ship had been corrupted. It was kind of obvious, in retrospect.
Allura had gone very still in response to the words, shutting her eyes tightly for a few seconds before saying “I’ve got to get into the AI chamber to disconnect the power manually. Coran, can you get the door unlocked?”
He opened his mouth and closed it again, before saying “I can, yes. But—disconnecting the power would—”
Allura cut him off. “Paladins, get to your Lions! I need you to slow the Castle’s descent into the star.”
It was a sudden reminder as to how much bigger the castle-ship was compared to the Green Lion. It was also alarmingly easy to tell that, even with all five of the Lions going at full-tilt while braced against the larger ship, that they weren’t making much of a difference.
The monitor with the flashing red warning sign that showed a display of the way-too-close star could’ve easily been just a proximity alert, but at the same time, Green being this tense sent a very different message.
“Okay, I’m no expert on the sun or anything, but uh,” Jordan started uneasily. “Blue thinks that thing’s gonna blow any minute.”
“Oh, that’s very reassuring, Jordan,” Eva said tersely.
“Not now you two,” Shiro cut in sharply.
It took a bit of fumbling with one hand to turn those three comm links. “Hey…Stan? What—what the AI said back there.” Stan glanced at Koji over the monitor, prompting him to finish: “How long are we going to be out here?”
There was a pause, before he sighed. “To be honest? I’m not sure. We’re just…just gonna have to do what we can in the meantime. Okay? Don’t let what that thing said get to you.”
Green’s presence brightened—do what they could.
That sounded like a good start.
So long as that star didn’t go supernova before they could get far, far away from it.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Eva wasn’t sure how much time had gone by before Allura called them back in. Just that it was close enough to the deadline for Red to not let her out and practically fling up his barrier as soon as he was in his hangar. She heard why a few seconds later, and saw the space outside light up—right before it was replaced with the swirling blues and blacks that was a wormhole’s interior.
“That was close,” she muttered to herself, slumping back in the chair. Red agreed, solemn.
To think that it had been the AI the entire time. The parting words he’d had for Eva earlier suddenly had a whole different meaning to them, and she had to suppress a shudder.
At the same time…that they were all still in one piece meant that the AI probably wasn’t intact anymore, if her guess in what Coran had been trying say was right.
Eva paused at the hangar’s door, looking back over her shoulder at the Lion. His presence felt unusually distant, but whether or it was just the proximity or not letting it be clear-enough, it felt almost hollow.
She mulled it over for a bit, before asking “Was—was he your pilot?”
A minute dragged by, and then another, before Red gave a sort of halfhearted emotion that was discernible enough to translate to a yes.
Eva started toward the bridge, before Red quietly redirected her toward one of the lounges. The others (except Coran, who if she had to guess was off doing a complete system reboot) were already there, and she could practically feel the questioning look from both Shiro, who had been standing by the door, but she just took a spot on one end of the couch without saying a word.
Jordan was lying on the other end, taking up most of that side, Allura was sitting in the middle, and both mechanics had taken a spot on the floor.
Shiro looked away from Eva eventually, quietly saying “I’m sorry about your father, princess.”
There was a pause before she said “That was not my father. My father—” She stopped, taking a shuddery breath. “He’s been gone for a very long time now. What matters is that we’re all still alive.”
Silence again, which was broken by Jordan starting haltingly, “I, uh, didn’t really know mine, but my uncle—he takes lots of pictures.”
Awkward attempt at changing the subject was awkward. It was a good attempt, though, and Eva could respect that. “What kind of pictures?” Koji asked, leaning forward a bit.
Jordan shrugged. “Just landscapes, really. Local stuff. And my cousin Sasha does a few paintings sometimes, and Fiona—well, she’s set up a blanket fort by herself in less than twenty minutes. I dunno how she does it.”
“Blanket forts,” Stan repeated blankly. “Those were fun.”
Koji nodded. “Miguel threw a fit every time, though.”
More silence, though this time it only lasted about a few seconds before Jordan sat up. “Hold on a second. I know you both work for the guy, but just how long have you known him for?”
They both stared at him for a few seconds, Stan looking extremely awkward all of a sudden and Koji looking more embarrassed than anything, before the latter coughed a bit. “Just over a decade, actually. I don’t think either of us would be here right now if he hadn’t helped us back then.”
“Don’t think we would’ve gotten off the streets either,” Stan muttered.
Shiro reacted first to that, a quiet “You’ve both come a long way, then,” being his only comment.
Allura seemed vaguely surprised and maybe curious but she didn’t say anything, and there was a quiet “Oh,” from Jordan.
The fourth silence came and dragged on for maybe a minute, up until Eva stood up and went right for the door, breaking into a dash as soon as she saw Shiro move to stop her, and she didn’t stop until she was out of breath, stumbling through the nearest doorway.
It was a smaller room with dark walls, when the idea of looking around occurred to her, with a metal pedestal featuring a broken glass cylinder atop it, with more glass shards being scattered on the floor.
That she recognized the pedestal was what let her know just where exactly she’d ended up running to, and she almost laughed at the irony of it.
She’d never really given much of a thought to either Stan or Koji in terms of what their lives back on Earth were like, since they’d never breathed a word of it—and as messed-up as it had been for them, they were still more put-together than she was.
Eva wasn’t sure how long she was there, sitting and leaning against the metal, just that at one point Chuchule crawled up onto her leg with a squeak that sounded almost like a cautious question. Not too long after that, the door opened, and whoever it was waited a bit before quietly stepping toward her. “Eva?”
Considering earlier’s events, it being Allura wasn’t exactly expected. At the same time, it was one of the mice that found her first, the little snitches.
“You left us all a little worried back there.” The princess took a spot next to her, before saying “If—if there’s anything you want to talk about, I’m willing to listen.” Red pointedly focused on the second part.
Well, they all knew who she really was already anyways. “It’s just—not fair,” Eva said eventually, looking away.
“Life rarely is.” Allura seemed pensive for an awkward amount of time, before saying “It also tends to target the things often taken for granted.”
You got that right.
Chuchule squeaked again, looking over at Allura, who blinked a few times before sitting up a bit straighter. “I almost forgot about that. Eva, about that ruin you and the others discovered on Arus, there…had been one like it on Altea, too.”
“Wait, seriously?” Okay, so the mice weren’t completely bad.
Allura nodded, looking distant before smiling thinly. “My father fell into it, actually. It was underground, and the roof was worn rather thin by then.” Red seemed to perk up, amused at the memory.
“The one on Alwas sank before I could go into it,” Eva remarked. “I mean, I’m kind of glad Shiro crashed near there before I could, but…”
“I—have to agree with that. If you had, Zarkon might’ve had the Red Lion right now.”
“Not the first weird coincidence,” she admitted. In retrospect, that she’d gotten to her dad’s company right before preparations for the Great Race had started was a huge one.
Dad. Shiro had been right about Sendak having been a possible info-source—for more than a few things. But of course, he’d been launched into space.
“Shiro told me that he’d cracked the pod’s glass,” Allura said, having Eva realize that she’d said some of that out loud. “It’s unlikely he’s still alive.”
“Unlikely isn’t a definite though,” Eva returned, standing up—and it was a bit of glass breaking underfoot with a sharp cracking sound that made both of them jump.
Oh. Right. “I—wasn’t really looking where I was going earlier…”
“You don’t have to apologize for that. It was just another coincidence.” The last part was said with some wryness, before standing up. “The others are probably wondering where we are. We should get back to them.”
“Y-Yeah.”
Allura stopped near the doorway, glancing over her shoulder at Eva, smiling faintly before saying “We’ll find your father eventually, don’t worry.”
It’s not just finding him I’m worried about.

In a short span of time, the Realme has garnered a reputation of being a worthy budget bet. The brand recently unveiled Realme C2, an entry-level phone alongside Realme 3 Pro, a lower mid-ranger aimed against the Redmi Note 7 Pro in India. Predictably, it had a subdued launch as the bigger phone seized the better of the limelight.
The budget phone runs on a 12nm Helio P22 SoC accompanied by an equally expected set of specs and features to meet the budget bar. However, is it a decent affordable phone that covers most basics?
Henceforth, we are sharing our experience with the device and by the time we are done, you’d hopefully be able to judge whether the Realme C2 is worth your money. Let’s get straight into our Realme C2 review.
Realme C2 Review with Pros and Cons
Realme C2 Price and Specification
Model Realme C2 Display 6.1-inch  HD+ Dewdrop fullscreen 19:5:9 display Processor 2.0GHz, Helio P22 12nm chipset RAM 2GB/3GB Internal Storage 16GB/32GB Software Android 9 Color OS 6.0 Primary Camera 13MP+ 2MP Secondary Camera 5MP AI Battery 4000mAh Price
2GB+ 16GB- Rs. 5,999
3GB+ 32GB- Rs. 7,999
Realme C2 Review: Design and Display
Realme C2 brings a modish look to the entry-level segment. Upfront, we have a 6.1-inch HD+ Dewdrop display with 19:5:9 aspect ratio. The phone’s decent display with fair color accuracy leaves us wishing it were a bit brighter too. The tiny notch cutout leaves most space for status bar icons and aids in an immersive display consumption.
The slim side bezels and negligible chin further make it appealing. The rear polycarbonate panel continues the distinctive diamond cut pattern. It has a matte finish that is grippy. You would also find the realme branding on the rear and a horizontally placed camera band atop.
Realme cuts corners by ditching the capacitive fingerprint scanner. So, you’re left with face unlock and other traditional unlock options. Credit where credit is due, the face unlock works fine. Weirdly enough, the display turns on and the face unlock activates accidentally often, even within the pant pockets. The resultant vibration left us annoying.
Rest, the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a lone speaker grill at the bottom, power button to the right and volume rockers to the left alongside the SIM tray. The buttons are tactile, the headphone and speaker output are more than okay at this budget.
Realme C2 Review: Camera
In its price tag, the dual cameras at the back including a 13MP+ 2MP setup is a sweet deal. The dewdrop notch in the facade houses a 5MP front snapper that combines the prowess of AI to enhance your selfies.
The edge detection in portrait snaps is finicky. But, when it works it bokehs the background adequately. The colors seem muted due to poor dynamic range and contrast. Realme’s image processing algorithms tend to compensate this by sharpening the output. Night-time shots were expectedly poor.
Overall, the photos are respectable for a budget phone camera but don’t expect much.

Realme C2 Review: Performance
Beginning with the internal hardware specs, Realme C2 is powered by a 12nm based 2.0GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 chipset. This is accompanied by a max of 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. It has a hybrid SIM slot which means you could sacrifice the second SIM for storage expansion up to 256GB.
This is understandably a bottom-rung internal spec list. However, in our real-life usage, we found the performance to be adequate. Even PUBG was playable at low graphics settings. If you are greedy for better visual gameplay, then get ready for framerate drops and drags.
It carries ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie on the surface. This software experience could be a hit or miss for you. If you’re a clean and minimal stock android lover, then the plenty of features and apps might overwhelm you.
ALSO READ: Xiaomi Redmi Go Review: A Smart Alternative To Feature Phones?
However, if that’s not the case, then you could uninstall some of the arguably junk apps and still use a comprehensive feature-packed OS. Realme has baked in a lot of nice haves such as navigation gestures, display tuner, app drawer, etc, but these extras do weigh down the minimal resources at disposal here. Call quality on the phone is again decent but not impressive.
Realme C2 Review: Battery
Realme C2 endures on a huge 4,000mAh battery, which could be one of its unique value proposition. As expected it keeps the device alive for long hours. The device’s HD+ display also drains less juice contributing to the battery life. For what it’s worth, you get a 10W charger with the box.

Realme C2 Review Verdict: Should you buy it?
First and foremost, we tested and reviewed the Realme C2 keeping its price in mind. The phone looks and feels in vogue and it does a fine job when it comes to display, battery and the overall performance.
We could go nitpicking about issues such as brightness, software, missing fast charging and fingerprint scanner, but considering other options available at this price point, that would be unfair and stupid, to be honest. If you are looking for an extremely affordable Android phone, the Realme C2 is decent enough.
Pros
Design
Battery mileage
Display
Cons
Heavy software
No dedicated card slot
Realme C2 Review: A Good Looking Entry-Grade Phone In a short span of time, the Realme has garnered a reputation of being a worthy budget bet.

Driverless Cars: Where They Stand Now
Level 4 fully automated (in certain conditions) driverless vehicles are already here. In Phoenix, residents can apply for Waymo’s Early Rider program, which allows them to take taxilike rides around the metro area in the company’s automated Chrysler Pacificas and hybrid minivans—no driver necessary. “It makes sense,” Huei Peng says. The University of Michigan mechanical engineering professor and director of the Mcity research facility continues: “Phoenix has no snow, very little rain. It’s easier to keep the camera lenses and lidar clear without degrading operation.”
Peng’s Ann Arbor-based Mcity operates two automated shuttles students can ride around the University of Michigan campus. “I call it Level 4-minus,” Peng says. “Because our shuttles are fixed-route only, it’s hugely different, a much simpler environment. We only need to be perfect on this one route. A driver isn’t necessary, but for now we do have a safety conductor on board at all times. We choose to operate the shuttles as Level 3 vehicles so the community and riders feel more comfortable.”
The Mcity research park employs 50 University of Michigan faculty members and more than 100 students in an environment studying some 1,500 connected test vehicles, the world’s largest CAV program.
Level 2 partially automated vehicles are sold by GM (Cadillac Super Cruise), Nissan (ProPilot), Tesla (Autopilot), and Mercedes-Benz (Distronic Plus), among others. The first commercially available Level 3 vehicle, which can take full control under constant driver supervision, is expected to be Audi’s 2019 A8, although its Traffic Jam Pilot system has yet to be approved for the U.S. market. Interestingly, in 2012 Google built a Level 3 vehicle for testing by its employees, who could ride from Mountain View, California, to Lake Tahoe. “After looking at the data from onboard cameras, they stopped the program,” Larry Burns says. “People were falling asleep, eating, reading—they were doing things that made it impossible to re-engage the driver. That’s why Waymo is aiming to take the driver out of the loop entirely.” (It’s a development some Arizonans aren’t particularly happy with.)
How far off are Level 4 or Level 5 vehicles? “I think we’ll reach the tipping point,” Burns says, “when it’s clear that the value of the system exceeds its price. I think we’re in a five-year window where that could happen. But I don’t think Level 5 is ever gonna happen. I don’t think it has to happen. Level 4 vehicles, even restricted to certain areas and conditions, will get us where we want to be. Do we really want a Level 5 vehicle driving in a snowstorm on Colorado’s Loveland Pass at night? I don’t think any vehicle should be doing that.”
Richard Wallace of the Center for Auto Research says an industry survey suggests Level 5 vehicles might appear around 2030. But he agrees with Burns: “I think [artificial intelligence] alone isn’t the answer. If it fails, there’s nobody there. So maybe it’s AI working with humans.”
Naturally, the advent of computer-driven vehicles has spawned book after book of new government regulations. Since 2012, 41 states and Washington, D.C. have put forward proposals for automated cars; 29 (and D.C.) have enacted legislation. On a federal level, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2016 issued a Federal Automated Vehicle Policy designed for safety assurance and enabling CAV innovations. In 2017, following public comments and congressional hearings, the agency released “A Vision for Safety 2.0,” incorporating safety-related voluntary measures for CAVs. As we go to press, the Department of Transportation and NHTSA are at work on version 3.0.
“We don’t know what’s going to be in the federal safety standards that are going to govern Level 4 or 5 vehicles,” Wallace says. “I’m not sure NHTSA wants to become a software-testing company. Do they outsource this to AI experts, cyber experts? Do they bring them in house? Will they be competing with GM and Google for talent? NHTSA is going to have to figure out a lot to certify these new vehicles.”
John Maddox, formerly of ACM, notes we have a century of experience with today’s system. “We know how to validate a vehicle, but take the human out of the loop, and you can’t apply the same 100-year methodology,” he says. “That’s the key tech hurdle. The technology is moving so fast that no one company knows how to do it all. Companies have learned bits and pieces—so a little sharing could go a long way. We need to work across companies, across countries. That way, we have a chance of creating a harmonized standard. At the ACM, we’re reaching out to help create that standard.”
Bottom line: For now, the world of automated vehicles is the Wild West. So buckle up. It’s gonna be a helluva ride.
By Definition: The Society of Automotive Engineers’ Automated-Driving Levels
Level 0: No Automation No robot. A conventional vehicle where the human controls everything.
Level 1: Driver Assistance The car can help. Most functions controlled by the driver, but steering or gas/braking (not both) may be automated at certain times.
Level 2: Partial Automation The car can help more. Most functions controlled by the driver, but steering and gas/brakes may be automated simultaneously. The driver must monitor the environment at all times.
Level 3: Conditional Automation The car can drive in certain situations. The driver must be ready to retake control at system’s request.
Level 4: High Automation The car can do all the driving under certain conditions. The human doesn’t need to pay attention in such circumstances.
Level 5: Full Automation The car can do all the driving in any circumstance. Humans are merely passengers and need not be involved in driving.
