Why Haida and Retsuko make a compelling couple
Okay, so this is something I’ve been planning on writing down for many months, because on both YouTube and the r/aggretsuko subreddit I’ve seen pretty harsh comments about the later Aggretsuko seasons AND Haida’s character, and it feels like these people either didn’t watch the same show as I did, or they just kind of missed the point of what the show was going for.
So bear with me, shall we?
A lot of people wonder why Haida is even interested in Retsuko in the first place. They assume he just likes her because she’s pretty or because stealing water is hot or something like that. Why can’t he get with a girl like Inui instead, who goes out of her way to be as nice and supportive as possible?
See, Season 4 explains that Haida has a lot of insecurity issues. He’s a very flawed person, and both he and the show are aware of this. Not only does he have low self-esteem, but he’s really bad at communicating, and he tends to overreact to issues. (Like when he threatened to beat up Tadano.) He genuinely wants to be a better person, but he’s struggling with it, and that makes him doubt himself and feel worthless.
As he explained to Fenneko in Season 3, he wasn’t interested in Retsuko at first because she seemed like just another generic nice girl. It was only after he caught her stealing water that he realized she was just as flawed as he was.
So what does he see in Retsuko? He sees someone who is also imperfect, someone who reminds him it’s okay to be flawed, someone who is basically a reflection of himself.
Compare that to Inui. Sure, she’s a nice girl. In fact, she’s TOO nice. Haida tried her out, but felt like she was just too good for him. He couldn’t relate to her, she’s the kind of perfect pure flawless nice girl that he assumed Retsuko was when he first met her. He knew there was no way he could possibly live up to her high bar of perfect kindness.
In fact, that’s actually the reason he was jealous of Resasuke and Tadano. It was more complex than just “No one is allowed to date Retsuko but me”. When Retsuko dated those people, it reminded him that he would never be as good as they were.
(Side note: some people see Haida as a psychopath for wanting to punch Tadano. First of all, it wasn’t just out of jealousy, it was because he saw how much Retsuko was being bullied on social media and blamed the rich donkey for ruining her life. Secondly, he threatens to harm Tadano, but chickens out at the last minute and gets an autograph instead. It’s completely normal to make empty threats towards people we’re angry at without actually acting out on those threats.)
What’s interesting is that Retsuko couldn’t live up to the bar those respective characters set either. Resasuke seemed nice at first, but he couldn’t pick up on any of her cues, thus resulting in her feet getting sore. Tadano seemed like the kind of rich nice guy she dreamed about marrying in Season 1, but after realizing he wasn’t interested in marriage or kids, they quickly broke up. Retsuko completely gave up on real romance after that, and instead chose to date a virtual unicorn because she knew an imaginary boyfriend could never judge her no matter what.
Both of the times Retsuko broke up with a guy, it was after she showed them her hidden death metal side, and neither were prepared for it. She expected Haida to be alienated by her metal side in the controversial Season 3 finale (and don’t worry, I WILL get to that), but he wasn’t.
He was the first guy to be fully accepting of her true self. Because he knows how it feels to be flawed and imperfect. And he likes Retsuko just the way she is.
In some ways, it parallels Kabae’s backstory in Season 2. All throughout her life, people were annoyed by Kabae’s constant blabbering, so she tried to change herself by keeping her mouth shut. But she nearly suffocated and had to go to the hospital, and the doctor there was the first person to not be alienated by her talkatively. Thus, she ended up marrying him.
Okay, so if Retsuko and Haida are so perfect for each other, why did she turn him down twice?
Let’s go back to the first incident, the Christmas special. Retsuko had just had a bad breakup with Resasuke, and she wasn’t in the mood for romance at the moment. It’s understandable that she would rather be in a platonic relationship with any guy for now.
In Season 4, she was unsure and indecisive of whether she wanted to date Haida or not. Sure, he still accepted her after seeing her metal side, but both of her previous attempts at romance had been failures, so how did she know this one would work out?
It was only after Manaka told her he’d make a bad boyfriend that Retsuko told him they’d be better as friends. However, she clearly wasn’t proud of that decision, so she still offered to hang out with him a little and get to know him more.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: Haida’s controversial actions in the Season 3 finale.
Sure, he was very harsh towards Retsuko. Retsuko had every reason to be offended by his over-the-top approach, especially after nearly being murdered. But everything he said was correct. He wasn’t trying to invalidate her recent trauma, he was calling her out for bottling up her emotions for so long. Indeed, all throughout the series, so much of Retsuko’s problems were worsened by her refusing to be honest about how she felt, and with this particular problem, she would never find any help if she continued to bottle herself up.
We don’t know how long it’s been since the incident, but it was clearly long enough that Retsuko was in danger of losing her job. And it’s easy to forget that it wasn’t just Haida’s idea; he was reluctant to do it at first, but Washimi and Gori encouraged him to do so. I also saw one commenter argue that he was deliberately trying to offend her and get under her skin on purpose that way Retsuko would finally spill out her emotions and release her inner demons. Either way, she clearly became a lot happier after finally venting her inner stress to Haida.
As for the bit with Gori’s dating app, I don’t see it as him trying to force his feelings on her, but instead him telling Retsuko’s mother that he’s a good friend of her daughter and she can trust him. (Plus, it’s implied Tadano messed with it in order to give Haida confidence, making it sort of a placebo, like Dumbo’s magic feather.)
Sure, he screwed up a whole bunch in Season 4. Yeah, the bit where he arm-wrestles Tadano just for talking to Retsuko again was definitely extreme. Plus, it was wrong for him to commit tax fraud just to gain Himuro’s approval. But at the end of the season, Retsuko slaps him and calls him out for all this. He doesn’t NEED the approval of other people, he’s perfectly fine the way he is. That is what causes him to overcome his flaws and finally stand up to Himuro.
In some ways, his arc in this season sort of parallels Retsuko’s arc in the previous season. Retsuko thought no guy would ever be accepting of her metal side, but Haida proved her wrong. Haida thought he would never be good enough to be truly accepted by anyone, but Retsuko proved him wrong.
At the end of the season, Retsuko and Haida are still on good terms. They’re clearly not ready for any long-term relationships yet, but Retsuko learned the hard way not to jump into romance, which is why she hopes to get to know Haida better before planning anything. It’s a sign of her character growth. She now realizes that life isn’t a fairy tale, and that real romances take time to truly blossom.
TL;DR: Retsuko and Haida are both equally flawed, and yet both of them accept each other for who they are in spite of this. Neither of them were sure if they were good enough to find a special someone, and they both proved each other wrong. That to me is a lot more interesting than an unrealistic Disney fairy tale-style romance where characters are instantly smitten with each other at first sight, and indeed, the arcs with Resasuke, Tadano, and Inui seemed to be deconstructions of fairy tale-style romances. I really hope Season 5′s arc is just as interesting and compelling.

When your best friend gets super drunk, the best thing you can do is be there for them as moral support. Even if the best friend in question is a massive idiot.

I don’t care how many scenes of happy home life you show me; I will never see Ton in any other way than a disgusting sexist pig.

Here’s a little quick drawing of Sato being her sunshiney self and asking a pretty bold question during working hours ! Kabae will most likely unleash some gossip afterwords for sure. Sato can be extremely oblivious sometimes ( who do you think she’s asking🤔?)
Also I would never use that text for a comic LOL! I just added it for fun !
