I hope Adrian Tchaikovsky doesn't feel like he can't write any more books about sentient spiders just because he's done it multiple times already. Because I don't think I have a limit in all honesty. There's no point at which I'd be like "ok Adrian, that's enough sentient spiders!" He could keep writing books about sentient spiders indefinitely and I would just keep reading them.

For Caesar, like many other young aristocrats, it was not enough simply to read great literature - he was also inspired to compose his own works. Suetonius mentions a poem praising Hercules as well as a tragedy entitled Oedipus. The quality of these immature works may not have been especially high - though probably no better or no worse than those written by other aristocrats who later went on to greater things - and they were suppressed by Caesar's adopted son, Emperor Augustus.

Thinking again about the time teenage Julius Caesar refused to divorce his wife even though she was a huge political liability, much more advantageous marriages were probably offered to him, and he then had to go on the run for defying Sulla.

We know of at least one other man who put aside his wife on the instructions of Sulla. Caesar was the only man to refuse, and to persist in that refusal in spite of threats and offers of favours, quite possibly including a marriage link to the dictator's family. Given recent events this was remarkable boldness, most of all for a youth who could easily be removed and anyway had connections with the opposition. Why he did this is unknown. The marriage to Cornelia does appear to have been a happy one, but it may just as easily have been innate stubbornness or pride.

There's a lot you can criticize Caesar for - and I have, and I will - but there's also moments like this that suggest he had at least some genuine principles or care for others, beyond his own personal gain. That dichotomy (and his wackier shenanigans) are what make him so interesting to me.

Thirty years later, in a letter at the start of his own civil war, Caesar told his friends he refused to follow Sulla's example (Cic. Att. 9.7c.). He stuck to that promise. Despite political and financial pressure from his supporters, he very rarely killed Pompeian leaders outside of battle, and never instituted proscriptions.

i just finished supernova and need someone to scream with. because holy fuck, this trilogy was fucking incredible. the characters, the complexity of the world building, the found fucking family and the relationships were beautiful. nova was so fucking badass and i love that she was actually morally grey. i have loved marissa meyers books since the lunar chronicles, and i immediately felt at home with this story and characters. i never have felt at home with a series that i haven’t read.
