The End of the Module – Digital Content Creation For Fashion

I have learnt so much from both parts to this module and it has really helped to take me out of my comfort zone. I now feel more confident to take control in more creative settings, like during a photoshoot or a podcast for example. It has been really interesting working and directing in a photoshoot with a model(s) and I feel like I have gained some great experience with photography and videography-based projects. This has also allowed me to adapt my digital skills through using new adobe editing software’s like Premier Pro and Audition. This module was very unique in comparison with the modules I have previously completed in the past and I now feel more prepared for my third year, especially for when I conduct more independent and creative-based projects.

Project 01 - Identities and Place (outcome)

For this project, I decided to do soundscape so I created a sound. I am aiming to have this sound play in a dark room and have the person be surrounded by the sound. The sound is meant to be something subtle as it should symbolise the thoughts in our head, 'the voices' in our head. The sound is to create some sort of uneasiness to show how the unconscious is always present and it causes a sense of discomfort. The whispering, steps and close whisper are there to signify the 'shadow' emerging from the unconscious to the conscious which isn't supposed to happen and causes unpleasant feelings.

here is the process of it. I firstly looked for dripping sounds and the edited them in AdobeAudition, I have also recorded my own footsteps and my own whispers. I took the whispers and lowered the pitch down. I then put them together and then had two mock outcomes which then led to my final outcome.

Musikschule und Tipps bei der Instrumentenwahl

Das bin Ich, ein junger musikbegeisterter Mensch im Alter von 27 Jahren. Schon mein ganzes Leben begleitet mich die Musik. Im Alter von 7 - 15 Jahren ging ich auf eine Musikschule in unserer Heimatstadt (Halle/Saale), dort lernte ich Kontrabass und Musiktheorie. Ich muss dazu sagen das ich in der Notenlehre bzw. Musiktheorie immer sehr sehr schlecht war. An meinem Instrument hat das für mich alles gar keinen Sinn ergeben, das kam dann erst später. Deswegen hier die erste Anmerkung: falls irgendjemand von euch sein Kind auf eine Musikschule schicken möchte oder ihr selber ein Instrument lernen möchtet. Wählt ein Instrument aus das gut zu verstehen ist. Manche Instrumente sind transponiert, oder spielen in ganzen anderen Notenschlüsseln als jene die „einfacher“ zu verstehen sind. Ich persönlich würde hier Klavier oder Gitarre empfehlen. Klavier ist meiner Meinung nach das übersichtlichste Instrument. Und der Vorteil ist, wenn ihr später mal produzieren wollt, gibt es die Möglichkeit über Midi Pianos andere Instrumente einzuspielen, Streicher, Brass, Synths usw., anders herum wird das wohl eher schwierig. Das Nächste zu empfehlende Instrument ist die Gitarre. Ich persönlich finde sie zwar etwas chaotischer als ein Klavier weil die Noten nicht alle nebeneinander sind, sondern auch über- und untereinander, aber der große Vorteil ist, dass es mit Gitarren Kenntnissen sozusagen das Wissen für weitere Instrumente kostenlos dazu gibt. Wer Gitarre spielen kann, kann automatisch Acoustik und Egitarre spielen. Und kann sich schonmal in verschiedenen Genres austoben. Wer Gitarre spielen kann, kann automatisch Bass spielen, zwar nur bedingt bis gut, aber auf jedenfall ist es viel einfacher Bass nach der Gitarre zu lernen, als anders herum! Wer Gitarre spielen kann, der kann auch sehr leicht bis automatisch Ukulele spielen. Wow ist das nicht cool? Ich muss dazu sagen das ich von bläsern überhaupt keine Ahnung habe. Und Streichinsteumente ist nochmal eine ganz andere Sache, ich finde Sie sind schwerer zu verstehen. Und weniger für Kompositionen geeignet. Jedoch hat man als Streicher immer die Möglichkeit in Orchestern zu spielen. Was als gut ausgebildeter Streicher später sehr gut entlohnt wird. Macht euch Gedanken welches Instrument ihr wählt und versucht relativ früh herauszufinden was ihr später mal damit anstellen wollt.

Meine Zeit im Jugendorchester

Im Laufe meiner Musikschulzeit, bekam ich einen Platz im Jugendsymphonieorchester der Stadt. Diese Zeit war für mich sehr aufregend. Wir hatten viele Ausfahrten zu Orchesterlagern was irgendwie vergleichbar mit einer einer Klassenfahrt war. Ebenso hatten wir viele Auftritte zum Beispiel in Kirchen usw. die ersten Erfahrungen auf der Bühne prägen natürlich. Einerseits war es eine sehr schöne Erfahrung auf der Bühne mit dem ganzen Orchester spielen zu können, andererseits war das Lampenfieber für mich als junger Mensch immer sehr schwer zu handhaben. Ich war immer sehr aufgeregt was mich etwas von meiner eigentlichen Arbeit abgelenkt hat. Aber wenn erstmal das ganze Orchester zusammen gespielt hat, war das immer ein sehr mächtiger Moment mit Gänsehautfeeling, für welchen sich jede Mühe gelohnt hat. Ebenso lernt ihr im Orchester oder Ensemble die ersten Musiker kennen mit denen ihr später ggf. immer noch zu tun haben werdet. Vielleicht werdet ihr Produzent und jemand aus eurem ehemaligen Orchester spielt die Geigen ein. Oder jemand hat einen Platz in einer Musikgruppe für euch oder Ähnliches. Auf jeden Fall ist es der erste Ort an dem ihr Kontakte knüpfen könnt, oder einfach nur mal ein anderes Instrument ausprobieren könnt.

Nach der Musikschule, erste Schritte als Rapper

Irgendwann verlagerte sich mein Interesse für klassische Musik eher in andere Bereiche. Als ich in meiner Pubertätsphase war. Hörte ich viel Rap und Hip Hop. Es war schlicht weg nicht cool Kontrabass zu spielen und ich wollte lieber Rapper werden. Diese von jugendlichem Leichtsinn geprägte Entscheidung brachte mich auf völlig neue Wege. Ich habe mich für alles interessiert nicht nur für das reine Rappen. Ich wollte wissen wie man aufnimmt. Wie man es bearbeitet. Und so weiter. Also machte ich meine ersten Erfahrungen mit Technik und Software. Hier gab es viel Neues zu lernen und es war sehr spannend für mich, mich da ein wenig rein zu fuchsen. Leider kamen auch die ersten Hürden. Technik kostet in der Regel viel Geld. Zumindest gute Technik. Und Programme zu verstehen ist anfangs gar nicht so einfach. Das gute daran war. Das alles was ich von diesem Zeitpunkt an gelernt habe, mir heute immernoch etwas bringt. Ich hab immer ein paar Abstriche gemacht um Musik machen zu können. So wünschte ich mir zum Beispiel zu Weihnachten lieber ein Mikrofon als die neue Playststion oder kaufte mir von meinem Taschengeld lieber einen Computer als irgendwelches anderes Zeug. Mein erstes Programm mit den ich versucht habe Aufnahmen zu machen war der „Magix Musicmaker“. Ein sehr einfaches und leicht zu besorgendes Programm. Ich nahm meine ersten Strophen mit einem Headset-Mikrofon von einem Sprachkurs auf. Die Qualität war schrecklich und grauenhaft. Später hatte ich dann wie gesagt mein erstes richtiges Mikrofon. Ich beschäftigte mich damit zu verstehen wie man richtig aufnimmt, und richtig bearbeitet. Und stieß letztlich schnell auf die Wörter Abmischen und Mix. So machte ich erste Erfahrungen mit compressor, Equalizer und so weiter. Auch wenn ich keine Ahnung hatte was ich da überhaupt tue, freute ich mich sehr das ich etwas drücken konnte und sich dadurch der Sound verändert. Ich nutzte dann später die Software „Adobe Audition“. Ich glaube ein Kumpel hat mir diese damals gecracked besorgt. Sind wir mal ehrlich. Das Geld um sich eine legale Software zu holen hatten wir als Jugendliche nicht. Und dass das nicht ganz legal war haben wir in dem Alter noch gar nicht realisiert. Übrigens gab es zu dieser Zeit auch keine Plattformen wie Spotify. Wir schickten uns die fertigen Songs auf dem Handy als mp3. Und verbreiteten es im unsererm Umkreis von Hand zu Hand. Später kam ich dann irgendwann zur heute noch beliebten Plattform YouTube. Wo ich meine Songs hochladen konnte. Und mir Tutorials anschauen konnte um mich weiter zu bilden. Bis heute ist YouTube eigentlich sowohl bei den Instrumenten, als auch bei den Recordinggeschichten zu einem meiner größten Lehrer geworden. Dort finden man eigentlich fast ALLES was man wissen muss. Meine Beats bekam ich damals von „rappers.in“dort gab es viele Beats die einfach nur zur freien Verfügung standen. So genannte Free Beats. Ich nahm meine ersten 12 Songs auf und machte sie so gut wie es mir damals möglich war fertig. Mein erstes „Album“ - falls man das so nennen kann - war geboren. Ich Verarbeitete meinen jugendprobleme und machte mir einen kleinen Namen in der Jugendrapszene meiner Stadt.

Zurück zu handgemachter Musik

Irgendwann reichte es mir nicht mehr nur auf Free Beats zu Rappen. Ich wusste wenn ich mit meiner Musik wirklich irgendwann ernsthaft mal Geld verdienen will, dann brauche ich eigene bzw. Exclusive Beats. Da ich aber niemanden kannte der welche machen konnte. Beschloss ich mich dazu es einfach selber zu lernen. Ich baute meine ersten Beats mit „Propellerhead Reason“ was bis heute eigentlich noch eine gute Software für solche Vorhaben ist. Ebenso befasste ich mich viel mit der Gitarre und etwas später mit dem Klavier. Insgesamt 8 Jahre lernte ich nochmal autodidaktisch Gitarre und Klavier um endlich „Richtige“ Songs schreiben zu können. Ich coverte viele von meinen Lieblingsliedern. Lernte ein paar Klavierstücke und so weiter. Es trieb mich einfach wieder zurück zu handgemachter Musik. Aber nicht im Bereich Klassik sondern etwas das ich für meinen Weg als Rapper gebrauchen konnte. Die Instrumente zu lernen war für mich ein wesentlicher Schlüssel auf meinem Weg.

Upgrade

Alles wurde mit der Zeit immer größer, aus meinem Mikrofon was einfach im Raum stand wurde später einer kleine Gesangskabine. Der Computer hat etwas mehr RAM bekommen. Das Midikeyboard wurde von 25 auf 49 erhöht. Mein kleines analoges Mischpult mit 2 Kanälen wurde durch ein Interface ersetzt. Und statt Adobe Audition verwendete ich „Steinberg Cubase“. Cubase war tatsächlich meine erste richtige Daw und hat mich sehr lange begleitet. Nun ja, und irgendwann dann begann ich mein erstes „richtiges“ Studio zu bauen. Aber mehr dazu in einem späteren Beitrag. Das war es nun erstmal zu meinem Werdegang im groben. Auf viele theme werde ich noch genauer eingehen.

Through a lens (new project)

To start the project, we were introduced to sound design and how that could help us with creating a moving image. Firstly we used a video as an inspiration and then used sound we found and put it onto it. I used AdobeAudition for it.

The next task was to pick a noisy topic and then do visual research that will then lead to creating a sound. I chose the word ‘trip’ then did a quick mindmap to find other keywords for it. I then came up with the idea of creating a nostalgic sound.

We also had a lecture which showed us how sound and animation can change the message of either one of them.

I then looked at a few artists that I could get visually inspired by as well as writing down detailed meanings of keywords for my sound+animation. Besides that we also had a lecture which was by an animator that I found really helpful since I got to see industry standard work.
