I want to talk about Skeleton Appreciation Day in Vestal NY by Will Wood and the Tapeworms. specifically i want to talk about how well it does at setting The Tone .
So as soon as the song starts it's the Everything Is A Lot staple of a Kind Of Offtune Piano. and then you got the faint kinda-clicky Percussion Of Some Sort (i cant tell im not a music man) . Then Mr. Wood comes in with the falsetto which gives. like. To Me it gives the impression of Instability . epecially with the very veryvery slight. like. Shake? idk if im overanalysing (i am overanalyzing) anyway
ACK SOUNDS
For me this increases the General Uneasy tone of the song. like. tenfold. idk if this was intentional but To Me the Ackackack is almost like the cracking of the backbone that is BEING DESCRIBED it's soo good i love this song. anyway

I hadn't thought about the toaster being behind Thomas, that's heartbreaking. I think Julian and Cap's "ackackack" noises don't mean much to him because machine-guns weren't invented in his day - he's confused when Julian does it ("What's this now?") It might also help that when Cap does imitate a pistol, he says "bang" instead of making the sound, but I'm sure Thomas still finds it insensitive. Cap's gun obsession must be really hard on him, especially as it was a military officer who shot him.
I don't think it's just the fact that machine guns hadn't existed yet when Thomas was alive. Thomas himself chooses pistol when he and Julian play Rock, Paper, Scissors. He wouldn't have done that if pistols in general triggered him.
As I've said in my original post, I think Thomas is triggered by a very specific combination of two things: a) sudden loud noises that b) come from behind him. I do agree, though, that it's likely that he finds the Captain's behaviour / obsession with guns insensitive and maybe even feels like the Captain is mocking him. Or at least used to before he realised that the Captain is just as unable to change as he is and simply can't help himself.
This actually makes me wonder how Thomas fared during the military's stay at Button House. I know the Captain doesn't carry a weapon but surely there must have been some at Button House at some point during the war? Even if only for training purposes. I imagine Thomas wouldn't have dealt particularly well with military training exercises on the grounds, at least not if he happened to be caught by surprise. Same with hunting parties. The noises would probably be too far away to actually make him jump but I can definitely see him covering his wound in those scenarios and reliving the pain for a brief moment like he did when Mike fond the musket ball.
