A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy & Sierra Simone
"'They're better at keeping secrets than Tom Hanks.' 'Is he … known for that?' 'No, but he should be. He looks so trustworthy.'"
Year Read: 2023
Rating: 4/5
About: Bee Hobbes is a successful, plus-sized adult film star as Bianca Von Honey, and she's just landed her first role as the lead in a mainstream Christmas movie. Starring opposite her is former boy band member, Nolan Shaw, who's determined to use this film to turn his bad boy image around to pay the bills for his mom and sister. The only catch? Bee has to keep her porn star career a secret from the conservative channel bankrolling the film-- and Nolan has had a secret celebrity crush on Bianca Von Honey for years. Sparks fly on set in the year-round holiday town of Christmas Notch, Vermont, but neither can afford to lose this opportunity by acting on their feelings. Trigger warnings: horse-related injury, fatphobia (countered). Graphic NSFW content.
Thoughts: This is such a solid book to end the year on. I'm a long-time fan of Julie Murphy, but it's my first Sierra Simone, and I'm loving the mash-up, as well as the transition into adult romance rather than YA. And if you couldn't tell by the fact that the main character is a porn star, this is very adult romance. There's a pleasant balance of fluffy holiday moments and absolute filth (affectionate) that I rarely find in the genre. It seems like either fluff or smut usually overpowers plot or character development in most romance novels, but A Merry Little Meet Cute has it all. I genuinely feel like I was watching the porny version of a Netflix Christmas movie, in the best way.
There's no way to talk about this book without also talking about how sex and body positive it is as well. Can we get a Christmas Hallelujah for a sexy, plus-sized leading lady who's utterly comfortable with her sexuality? I love Bee so much, and she's such a wonderful, grounded, and inspiring character (much like all of Murphy's leading ladies, if we're being honest). I also appreciate the efforts to make the porn industry less exploitive; Bee is in total control of her career and her online fan account. Nolan is a bit more typical as the reformed bad boy, but he tries hard to be a better person, and they're the kind of couple who help each other be the best possible versions of themselves. Easily one of my favorite books of the year, and while the next novella and book focus on different sets of characters, I'm excited to read more in this universe.

Top 10 books I read in 2023
(in chronological order)
Even Greater Mistakes by Charlie Jane Anders
It's hard for a short story collection to hit the same way a novel does. This one is a banger, start to finish, and it made me want to write more.
The Year I Stopped Trying by Katie Heaney
I wish I had read this book when I was an overachieving, people-pleasing teen.
Babel by R.F. Kuang
Top-tier fantasy. Absolute masterpiece. If you haven't read it, you are missing out.
If You Could See the Sun by Ann Liang
Invisible girl digs up dirt on her rich classmates, falls for one of them, has feelings about it. Another totally excellent book about a teenage overachiever.
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
A fantasy about books and magic and everything that I, personally, would love.
True Biz by Sara Novic
Mind-expanding and totally compelling novel set at a school for the Deaf.
Our Biggest Experiment by Alice Bell
Read this to understand where we are and where we need to go.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
I discovered Holly Black again this year, and I'm so thrilled about it. i think she lives inside my brain.
Always Coming Home by Ursula K. LeGuin
I'm slowly but surely reading my way through everything LeGuin has written. She is a genius, and this one in particular was a revelation.
A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone
I guess I'm a sucker for a holiday romance! Who knew? This one is pitch-perfect; funny, sexy, sweet.

“You’re more than that, you know,” I said softly as we stepped into the elevator and I slumped against the wall with my eyes closed. “You’re more than a stupid Jeopardy question.”
How,,, how in the world did they make a line about Jeopardy so romantic?? 😭😭

A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy
⭐⭐⭐.5
I wanted to love this book. I loved the plus size representation, the bi representation, and how positively sex workers are viewed in this book. As you can probably tell based on the fact that I didn't finish this Christmas book until March, I found some things I disliked about this book.
I felt like this book could've had 100 less pages and still be the same. I didn't feel like the characters had as much depth as I'd like for a 400+ page book.
Overall, I love the main female character but dislike the main male character. I was left somewhat unsatisfied because of how long and dull certain parts were and how they dragged on.

Fall/Winter 2022 Anticipated Book Releases
I promised earlier in the year that I would do a latter half of the year version of my anticipated releases post because releases for August-December hadn't been released yet. Since I'm still not completely well versed in new releases, I comb through Goodreads to find out what's coming out later this year.
Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid | August 30th | Goodreads
I have yet two read either of the two TJR books sitting on my shelf, but I've also never heard anything bad about her writing. I've read very few books about sports and athletes (maybe three total), and I'd love to see how such a beloved profession is handled in a fiction setting. She's done it before, let's see if she can do it again.
A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone | Septemeber 20 | Goodreads
I enjoyed Julie Murphy's writing in Dumplin' and I want to see what it's like as an adult novel. The plot of this sounds so fun and actually brilliant, I hope it's steamy despite it's cutesy cover. Also taking place during Christmas time makes the wintery season exciting. Seeing a concept like OnlyFans in a novel is so intriguing.
Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng | October 4th | Goodreads
If anyone is going to write a tale about family, it's going to be Celeste Ng. It has been about two years since I last read one of her novels and I think I'm ready for another. Before, when I read two in less than six months, I feel that I didn't appreciate the second as much because the writing style was the same although the plot was completely different. Maybe with time this one will be just as brilliant.
Poster Girl by Veronica Roth | October 18th | Goodreads
I have now read two Veronica Roth Young Adult series in my life but far enough apart that they felt like they were written by completely different people. With her venturing into adult (I'm not sure if for the first time), I want to see how her writing has grown again. I don't read much dystopian anymore, but I will for her.
The World We Make (Great Cities #2) by N. K. Jemisin | November 3rd | Goodreads
Now this one I have real stakes in reading! I really enjoyed the first book in this series (that I'm not sure how long it's going to be), but I know we had a huge open gap in the plot that I want to see continued. This world is so expansive and, although it's fiction, really makes you think about the world around you and what is alive and what isn't.
