I have never seen any of the Barbie animated films before. But it’s Christmas, and even though I don’t really celebrate the holiday, I love the book A Christmas Carol; and I love A Muppet Christmas Carol. So Barbie in A Christmas Carol seemed like the obvious way to dip my toe in.
My notes from watching are below!
In the framing device scenes of Barbie telling the story to Kelly, Barbie is wearing a silver dress that looks like pretty much the same dress as 2008 Holiday Barbie, even though that wasn’t an official tie in doll for the film.
Instead of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly businessman, we have Eden Starling, an opera singing diva. Her childhood friend Catherine seems to play the role of Scrooge’s nephew but given she also works for the theatre there’s a dash of Cratchitt in there too?
Eden tells everyone not to bother coming back if they don’t come in to rehearse for the new show on Christmas. Even Scrooge only told Cratchitt to be there all the earlier the next morning.
Aunt Marie (the stand in for Marley) is draped in chains - but these chains have mirrors on the ends instead of cash boxes and ledgers. I presume to represent her sins of vanity instead of financial greed.
The spirit of Christmas past is really cute, like an excitable little elf.
Little Eden wants to spend time with friends but Aunt Marie makes her rehearse all Christmas instead of seeing other people. Eden sneaks out to go to a party instead of practicing.
I’m sure it’s in the interests of streamlining the story for Barbie audiences, but I’m a little disappointed the spirit of Christmas past only takes Eden to one place.
Christmas Present shows the theatre workers throwing tomatoes at a picture of Eden. That’s pretty funny but it’s not much of a lesson. That’s okay - Christmas Present takes her to a second location, presumably so we can meet our Tiny Tim. In this case it’s the reveal that Catherine is working for another theatre as well; or so Eden thinks. Actually it’s an orphanage putting on a Christmas pageant, and our Tiny Tim is a little girl who walks with a crutch and idealises Eden. Catherine lies to her and says Eden is very sorry she can’t come in person but is so proud of all of them. I don’t know why but I got a little emotional about that!
Anyway the orphanage is about to close due to lack of funds. This doesn’t strike me as quite as resonant because Eden is a diva and selfish but none of her sins we’ve seen so far are related to finances.
Alright, time for Christmas Future. The show is a shambles because she fires all her staff for coming in late and their replacements are rubbish so the show is an embarrassment. This means Eden lives in squalor because she lost her career. Her best friend Catherine is now a famous fashion designer, but has got there by being as selfish as Eden is. The orphanage closed down because Catherine had to go out of town to find new work and she never found out what happened to the children.
Catherine indicates she would have adopted Tammy if she had known, but didn't get the chance. The other kids can just miss out I guess?
We the audience don’t find out what became of Tammy, so we don’t know if she died like Tiny Tim. We can assume it wasn’t a great outcome for her, but it’s left to our imagination.
The red dress Eden is wearing at the end is the one from the tie in dolls!
Eden adopts (by which I assume she means financially support) the whole orphanage which doesn’t seem really like it suits the arc but sure I’ll allow it.
At the end of the movie I finally realise that Catherine was supposed to be Barbie’s friend Nikki. Apparently there was a doll prototype for Catherine, but I don't think she ever got released.
That doll I shared above wasn't the only tie-in doll though! There was also a giftset with Kelly dolls dressed as the spirits. Missed opportunity because the spirits were of different ages. I would have liked to see a doll of the Spirit of Christmas Present as seen in the movie!
I looked up some reviews of the novelisation to see if there were any changes, and only then did I realise I missed something -- Catherine isn't supposed to represent nephew Fred at all. The magician who has a crush on Catherine is Fred, leaving Catherine in just the Cratchitt role. That in hindsight makes a little more sense.
I'm not sure if I'll watch any more of the Barbie movies, but that was a good start. (If you think I should watch more, by all means tell me so, and recommend some!)

Beloved character actress Andrea Martin (1947) is a two-time Tony winner for My Favorite Year (1993) and Pippin (2013), both for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, a nomination she has received five times, more than any other actress. Other stage work includes Exit the King (2009), Noises Off (2016), and A Christmas Carol (2019). You may know her from SCTV if you're old enough, where her impersonations and portrayals will make you cry laughing.
It is a hate crime against me personally that there isn't a single high quality photo of Linda Eder (1961) with her silver fox hair. She is best known for originating the role of Lucy Harris in Jekyll & Hyde (1997), and her career has mainly consisted of concert tours, cabaret acts, and an impressive discography. She teaches masterclasses and vocal lessons. She has an upcoming return engagement at 54 Below, and if someone could send me like $200 to go, that would be great.

literally been thinking about this for as long as I’ve been shipping them but yeah Mads is not having a good time, Fenton’s trying to help him feel better, and Gyro is trying to convince his family that everything is fine 🙃🙃🙃
Sooooo Mads doesn’t know how to act around Gyro’s family (or his family? he doesn’t know), and spends most of the time in the room they’re staying in (defensive self-isolation babeyyyyy). Whenever he’s around them he’s in automatic ‘say one critical thing about any of us and I will bite your head off’ defense mode. Fenton spends most of his time with Mads trying to help him feel better, or at least just being a companion for when Mads just wants to be away from most of the family. Therefore Gyro is really the only one who spends time with his family, and spends the whole time making excuses like ‘oh yeah Mads didn’t sleep last night so he’s sleeping in that’s why he’s not at breakfast’ ‘Mads is doing laundry because he spilled on his favorite shirt that’s why he’s not coming Christmas shopping’ ‘he’s going to the store to get muffins and therefore can’t do carols with us.’
So uh. from all of that I’m sure you can guess it’s kind of a disasterrrrrr Genevieve can see what’s going on and tries to help, giving instructions to Gyro and Fenton because Mads doesn’t want to talk to her about it. Gabby spends the entire time arguing with Mads over everything, and is the first to passive aggressively be like ‘oh why aren’t Mads and Fenton here, they have something better to do than spend time with family???’ Fulton and Sonia are concerned and confused but are trying to make the most of the holiday with everyone together for the first time, and Grant seems painfully oblivious sldlflglgk
I guess this just comes down to Mads being a diva (he’s just scared of what the family is going to think of him and them) and everyone else having to deal with it XD dw that’s probably a lesson they learn in the end or something fltlggmym

Castlemas ‘22 #11: Heartfelt Songs
Post Series
She’s in her element and no one can fault her. A rapt audience completely mesmerized by the performance she’s putting on.
The boys are bouncing from foot to foot in time to the tune Martha is playing on the piano, each holding onto Alexis as she laughs at her brothers dance moves and Lily dances with Jim, grandfather twirling granddaughter back and forth.
“Dance Mrs Castle?”
She grins, takes his hand and lets him pull her out onto the makeshift dancefloor the kids have staked out besides the piano and they laugh and sway.
Its not long before they’re surrounded by the kids, Jake and Reece clinging to a leg each and Lily wraps herself around Rick’s back. They somehow manage to wind arms around giggling bodies and sway with their children as Martha moves through Jingle Bells. The Loft is filled with the discordant voices of carolling as the Castle family start singing, Jim lifting Jake into his arms for a dance as Kate pulls Reece into her arms and Castle lets Lily stand on his feet to waltz. Martha smiles bright when Alexis slips onto the piano bench next to her.
It’s not often she entertains them like this but when Martha sits at the piano, the kids go wild for it and she eats it up.
“Gram, again!” They all chant when she’s done, her grandkids clamouring to be next to her and Castle sits back for a minute to watch the way she brings magic to their lives just by being the diva he’s always known and loved.

Is anyone taking a bet as to which stunt they will pull next? A Christmas walkabout with 2 children? Or some sort of Christmas address, with guess who do all of the talking?
They will announce a Christmas Eve Tv special…Archie playing Christmas Carols on the piano better than Elton could. Lili singing in Latin, Italian, Word Salad while doing ballet. Harry will be reading “Twas The Night Before Mommy And Daddy’s Netflix Fakeumentary “. And Diva will be dressed as a gremlin with long black wig. She will serve up satan cookies, and hot whiskey. ❤️

Ok, episode 6 of season 2 spoilers below finally and overall thoughts on season 2 and the series of a whole
Hugo went to MIT no thoughts just pointing it out
Noel is still talking to the cut out, boy needs therapy

Evil santa is a highlight along with Olga the only reason I liked this season

Final thoughts on this season and the characters:
Carol felt useless and needs a hobby other than telling Gary what to do. I'm honestly sad that her character is feeling flat. I don't exactly know how they CAN fix it as Mrs Claus is very in the background as a whole in the holiday.
Fluffy felt like an unneeded character. His jokes were bland for a comedian. Most of his jokes were about daddy issues, which his character did have, and it wasn't funny tbh. Idk I feel like mad santa could of done better without fluffy being there.
Mad santa and Olga: I love the design and his sass. Olga and him really bounced off eachother well. I loved that Olga didn't put up with Mad Santa and would make fun of him. Olga and Mad Santa were honestly the reason is ticked this far into this reason as they were actually fun.
Cal is a golden retriever with two braincells, and both are thinking about girls. I hate Riley, but she's fits his lack of thought well as she is also head empty. I wish Cal was actually intelligent and not your stereotypical disney boy.
Sandra is the golden child. Sandra, I truly like and was worried she would be as flat as Carol. I'm glad she has magic, but I have no idea where they might go with her magic. Might be interesting if she becomes halloween as that's a legendary we haven't seen.
La befana, I have mixed feelings on this season. I liked her a lot, season 1, but now she just seems weak and not the powerful witch we thought she was in season 1.
Scott....... needs a longer beard. He needs to get his ass out of his head and actually listen and look at his children instead of what HE wants. I want to see him make toys like he did in the movies and actually be in the workshop.
Betty and Noel leaving makes me sad as they were my OTP and will be sad to see them go. I'm scared who the next head elf will be if they do decide not to return from Kribble Krabble. Because none of the elves we see currently are head elf material. Eddie should not be head elf.
Curtis isn't dead????? I need an explanation how he survived.
If season 3 does happen, I want to see more hands on Scott in the workshop. Cal gaining 5 more braincells. Carol having a hobby. Backstory on Gary's eye

I'll be honest, I always sort of assumed this was a Miss Piggy thing because A Christmas Carol hadn't given her an opportunity to flex her diva/violence muscles yet:

Three facts about them from my personal headcanons.
She lives with Mickey; her separate house in Toontown is a second home that Mickey bought for her as a decorating project.
While both she and Mickey love both cheese and chocolate, she prefers chocolate while he prefers cheese.
She loves all the Disney Princesses, but her favorite is Snow White, because they're from the same generation.
A reason they suck:
She was a bit of a fickle flirt back in the 1920s.
A reason they are great:
She's adorable and fun-loving.
A reason I relate to them:

(what I consider to be) the top tier otp/ot3 for that character:
Mickey is her one and only!
Five things that never happened to the character that I believe should have happened:
An origin story cartoon showing how she met Mickey.
A cartoon revolving just around her and her dog Fifi (Pluto's sometime girlfriend), without Mickey or Pluto appearing.
A cartoon or comic where she interacted with Mickey's two nephews Morty and Ferdie, and with their mother, Mickey's sister Felicity. Maybe it could be a making-of for Mickey's Christmas Carol, showing little Morty being camera-shy about playing Tiny Tim until "Aunt Minnie" helps him overcome his fears.
A cartoon that revolves around her being embarrassed about her fickle flapper days from the '20s and trying to hide the fact that she sometimes used to date Pete.
A Disney/Muppets crossover stage show at one of the theme parks, centered around Minnie and Miss Piggy – together they would be a fun pair of divas.
Five people that character never fell in love with and why.
Donald Duck. He's too hot-tempered and too hard to understand.
Goofy; he's too tall and too clumsy.
Scrooge McDuck; he's too old and too gruff
Ludwig von Drake; he's also too old and too wacky.
Kermit the Frog; he's nice, but his green color is too bright.
