Shiba Dog Ranmaru on YouTube is one of the dog channels I follow. His owner writes about him as if he observing a new species (and he captions in English), and I find it quite charming.
They actually were close to the epicenter of the earthquake in Japan and lost their home. They've been able to visit and eat in the front area, but they are sleeping in their car.
Some of the Japanese fans are watching their videos or letting them play so the owner gets whatever ad revenue he can in the meantime.
My personal favorite is a video where the owner strokes a loaf of bread next to Ranmaru and the Shiba becomes jealous.
Here's a link to the channel!

I have no idea if this will actually reach anybody at all, but this is important to me.
An, in my opinion very good, German YouTuber called TJ just released a 50-minute-long video about the right wing political party or even Nazi party AfD, which stands for Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany) and their racist, anti environmental and misanthropic agenda. It is incredibly well made, has weeks if not months of research behind it with well over 200 sources. This topic is incredibly important given the recent upsurge of right wing and nazi-like rhetoric all over the world.
The video itself touches on their political agenda and the contradictions within said agenda, their stance on the topic of climate change and the role humanity plays in that, their political views on LGBTQIA+ topics and immigration, as well as the overlap between the AfD and the third Reich.
I do not know if this video has good English closed captions/subtitles but please, consider watching it. This topic is immensely important and needs to receive way more attention.
So, if you’re interested, here’s the video:
youtube
Thank you for reading this far and giving me your attention.
As long as right-wing narratives persist in our political world, we should and cannot stop to protest and voice our opinion.
FUCK AfD.

Christmas Films of a Century Past
(updated!)
Tumblr media
For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to watch somewhere 50-60 Christmas and Christmas-adjacent silent films from before 1920 to put together a playlist for you all.
I chose these as a representative selection. My general criteria were:
Christmas should be central to the story
The plot should be novel to a modern viewer or something a modern viewer would be surprised to see so early on film
The list on the whole should have a variety of settings and narrative structures
Here’s a direct link to the YouTube playlist, if you want to watch them all in one go. (They are all shorter than feature length!)
Two quick presentation notes:
Some of the videos have music and some don’t, so you may want to check your volume level.
The intertitles for some of these films are not in English, so be sure you have captions turned on for English translations.
READ ON BELOW!
1. Santa Claus (1898) (UK)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by George Albert Smith
Short and sweet, this film sees children put to bed by their nanny on Christmas Eve and Santa Claus coming down the chimbley to fill their dutifully hung stockings. Director G.A. Smith used his own patented technique of double exposure to show Santa’s arrival without cutting away from the children’s room. Santa Claus might not pack the punch of a Méliès trick film, but it’s a fun novelty and is purportedly the first appearance of Santa Claus on film.
2. The Little Match Seller (1902) (UK)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by James Williamson
This one’s a quick but effective adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson tragedy featuring impressively well-coordinated superimpositions.
3. The Christmas Angel (1904) (FR)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by George Méliès for Star Film Company
The Christmas Angel follows an impoverished girl driven into the city to beg on a snowy winter night. First she’s chased away from a church by more seasoned beggars; then she’s thrown out of a poultry seller and harassed by police. On the verge of falling asleep in the snow, a rag-and-bone man rouses her and offers her help. Later, the girl passes out beside a road but is luckily spotted by a wealthy couple on a car ride. When they learn of her plight, they bring her home along with food and gifts.
Though not as fantastical as some of Méliès’ more famous works, The Christmas Angel is still highly stylized (and stylish) and features special effects that are photographed beautifully. It’s also worth noting that the version of the film included here is the American cut. The original French cut, titled Détresse et Charité (Distress and Charity), did not include the sequence with the wealthy couple and instead ends with the girl dying in the snow.
4. The Night Before Christmas (1905) (US)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company
This is the first time the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” was put on film. Loosely following the poem, we see Santa Claus prepare for his yearly trek while a middle-class family prepares for his visit. When Santa heads out, we are treated to an extended panning sequence with a fully painted backdrop for a mini Santa and his reindeer to glide across. When Santa arrives at the family home, he chaotically dumps presents and decorations around their living room and makes a large, decorated tree appear out of thin air. (Across many of the movies I watched to put this post together, this seems to be a favored scenario for the jolly fat man around this time—and it’s delightful.) The family then wakes to find their gifts and the film closes with Santa directly wishing us a Merry Christmas.
5. A Little Girl Who Did Not Believe in Santa Claus (1907) (US)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by J. Searle Dawley and Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company
Even at the risk of this list being too Edison heavy, I couldn’t leave this great short out. While walking with his mother, a rich little boy encounters a poor little girl alone in the cold. They take her home to play and warm up. When the boy learns that the girl doesn’t believe in Santa because apparently Santa doesn’t visit poor children, he hatches a scheme. On Christmas Eve, the boy holds a stake out near the fireplace and takes Santa hostage, tying him up and holding him at gunpoint. The boy then forces Santa to visit the girl—going so far as shimmying down the chimney himself to let Santa in the front door. When the girl wakes up to a beautifully decorated tree, new toys, and a full stocking, she can finally believe in Santa Claus. While I’m generally not so into stories about supposedly benevolent rich people, I do love the implications this story has on how Santa Claus works and I also find the means with which the boy gets his way hilarious.
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by Andre Deed for Itala Film
This entry is a three-for, which I hope you’ll excuse, but I couldn’t decide which Cretinetti Christmas to share! Cretinetti, the comedic persona of filmmaker Andre Deed, is an absolute agent of chaos.
In the 1909 film, Cretinetti attempts to bring a tree home for a Christmas party. The destruction escalates wildly, culminating in an entire building falling to pieces.
Tumblr media
If you can believe it, the stakes are even higher in the 1910 film, when Cretinetti can’t resist sneaking out of bed on Christmas Eve to snack on the candy decorating the tree. When Santa sees what Cretinetti has done, he chides him and takes him back to his workshop—which is apparently in heaven. Destruction ensues. Cretinetti then proceeds to cause havoc for Saint Peter, annoying god so much that he calls the devil to come get Cretinetti. Cretinetti is then chased to hell where demons try to cook him alive. Thankfully, spoiler alert, it was all a bad dream and he wakes up on Christmas morning with a terrible stomach ache.
Tumblr media
The 1911 film returns to localized chaos. Cretinetti has a run-in with a mail carrier and his Christmas packages get mixed up with one of the carrier’s parcels. The parcel contains three bottles of ether which then begin to emit gasses in the middle of the family Christmas party.
I wasn’t familiar with Cretinetti before reviewing films for this list, but I’m definitely going to seek out more of Deed’s movies. Each of these films had well-executed chaotic slapstick; over-the-top in all the right ways.
7. Making Christmas Crackers (1910) (UK)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Produced by Cricks & Martin Films for Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs Confectionery
To start, if you’re not sure what a Christmas cracker is, it’s a colorfully decorated paper tube that makes a cracking noise as you pull it open. Inside the tube is a paper hat, a joke, and/or a small toy. It’s a traditional part of UK Christmas celebrations.
This short starts as a documentary of the workers at Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs constructing the crackers. It’s a fun thought that as early as 1910, people were interested in watching how mass-produced consumer goods were made. It’s also fun to see these skilled workers ply their trade so deftly (even though wages and working conditions were likely less than ideal). The film ends with a family celebrating around a Christmas tree topped with a functional giant cracker.
8. A Christmas Carol (1910) (US)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by J. Searle Dawley for Edison Films Manufacturing Company
There are so so so many film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol made before 1920 that it was hard to choose which one to include on this list. In the end I chose this 1910 version for its economy of storytelling, fluid use of special effects, and for Marc McDermott’s great performance as Scrooge.
9. Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner (1911) (US)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by Gilbert M. Anderson (Broncho Billy) for The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company
Gilbert M. Anderson was an incredibly prolific and popular filmmaker and star of early American film, particularly in his role as Broncho Billy. As was typical for Anderson, he’s pulling triple duty on Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner as the star, director, and producer. The film features a simple and heartwarming story.
On Christmas, Billy comes across a young woman in peril as her horses got startled and are now pulling her cart along wildly. Billy manages to wrangle the horses and in gratitude she invites him to Christmas dinner at her parents’ home. Unfortunately, her father happens to be the sheriff. But, all is well, as it turns out that Broncho Billy’s been given a pardon and the sheriff welcomes him to the table gladly.
The enduring appeal of outlaws or criminals getting into the Christmas spirit is fascinating to me and it’s cool to see such an early instance of the story!
10. Le Noel de la princesse / The Little Princess’s XMas Gift (1911) (FR)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Produced by Socité Générale des Cinématographes Éclipse
In all honesty, this is the least Christmassy (but also probably most christian-y) of all the films I included here, but its style and novelty stood out. The sets, costuming, and production design are lush. It might also be one of the weirdest Christmas stories I’ve even encountered.
After Lord Othberg passes away, the conniving Otto plans to assassinate the baby prince in order to inherit the lordship himself. He poisons the baby, but the princess prays for her baby brother to come back to life as her Christmas gift. An angel appears to her and they summon Jesus, who resurrects her baby brother. Of course, they then place the revivified baby in the castle’s nativity scene, to the joy of all but Otto.
11. Ida’s Christmas (1912) (US)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by Van Dyke Brooke for Vitagraph Company of America
With a more classic Christmassy story, Ida’s Christmas tells us of a family who are facing hard times. Ida (played by a very small Dolores Costello) has her eyes on a pricey doll. Meanwhile, her mother seeks out employment with a wealthy family. The matriarch of the wealthy family overhears Ida’s wish and decides to buy the doll for her as a surprise. Later, Ida is distraught to find that the doll has been purchased but comes across a wallet that someone has dropped. She considers taking the money, but chases down the owner instead. The old man gives her some reward money for returning the wallet. Ida rushes to see if she can buy the doll, but has second thoughts when she thinks about how much her family could use the money. She arrives home with the money just in time for a Santa-esque old man to show up bearing packages and an assurance that the wealthy family has work for her father. The film ends with the family celebrating an unexpectedly Merry Christmas.
It’s a sweet story that hits so many beats of what we now consider traditional Christmas tales.
12. Рождество обитателей леса / The Insect’s Christmas (1913) (RU)
Tumblr media
[letterboxd | imdb]
Directed by Władysław Starewicz for Khanzhonkov
Fair warning, if you thought The Princess’s XMas Gift was odd, you might need to ready yourself for this one. Stop-motion virtuoso Władysław Starewicz (Ladislas Starevich) spins a tale about a tiny ornament of Santa/Ded Moroz coming to life on Christmas and going out into the wild to bring Christmas joy to creatures small and smaller, including a frog and a ladybug. Starewicz’s animation is as impeccable as ever and the short is imaginative and quirky.
Honorable Mention:
Dance of the Seasons (1900)
Christmas Dream (1900)
Christmas Eve (1913)
A Christmas Carol (1914)
Snow White (1916)
A Winter Straw Ride (1906)

now that thats all over i have a genuine criticism of minecraft live. i was not happy with the state of the subtitles/captions.
they were clearly live subtitles, so whoever was captioning the video was trying very hard to make them accurate. however, they weren't accurate. there were a few times where words were missed out that completely changed the meaning of what was said. they also covered the translated subtitles, so whenever someone speaking a language other than english was speaking, I couldn't see the translation.
some parts of the event were clearly pre-recorded, and other parts were clearly scripted, so there's surely a way to caption these parts in advance, or at least use these to make the captions more accurate and less delayed. this would mean missing out on things where people slightly deviate from the script, but as it is, that would be a huge improvement.
from what i can tell, theres no way for viewers to reposition the live captions on the screen. i tried a few times and they went straight to the bottom. maybe next year, mojang could put the translated captions on the top of the video, or just a little bit higher up to allow space for the youtube closed captions. in general its a good idea to avoid putting text right at the bottom (where captions go).
i am glad that there were captions at all, and grateful to the person captioning the video. i just hope to see some improvements next year.

Apparently I have people listening to my videos in English translated from...English
To clarify, I write closed captioning for these myself, and YouTube also autogenerates them. On top of that, there is now a mysterious third English caption that is apparently translated from English, into English again. Why

Shortly after he was released, Toomaj Salehi was arrested again. Prior to the arrest, he released the above video, in which he speaks about his experience in prison, including torture. I have copy-pasted YouTube's English-language closed captions below.
Hello friends, I hope you’re all well.
0:03
Today is November 26, 2023
0:06
This is the first video I am sharing of myself
0:09
Other videos being shared of me on social media
0:12
are from after my release in 2021,
0:19
when they imprisoned me for the song “Soorakh Moosh”
0:24
Sorry that I’m a bit late to pay my respects to you,
0:28
, there has been a little psychological pressure on me,
0:34
and I’ve been trying to fight it to get to a normal state.
0:41
In a picture you can show that you are doing well,
0:45
, it’s one second, you smile and take a picture,
0:48
but in a video, it’s very obvious how you’re feeling.
0:53
And I wanted to be feeling good, very good, when I came to speak to you, which I am now.
0:58
Firstly, and most importantly, I wanted to thank you all
1:03
for your spirit of support,
1:06
, not just because you supported me, but because you’ve supported anyone who has needed you during this time.
1:13
And you’ve shown a unity that I, myself, had never seen before.
1:19
Because you didn’t get tired, you didn’t forget us, , because you still haven't forgotten the people of Ekbatan
1:26
and you haven't forgotten the people who are still in confinement, you’re amazing.
1:32
This (your support) has been a huge thing, especially for me.
1:37
When I was in the detention center, where speaking is somewhat impossible, even with family,
1:50
because visits are very short and there is a guard next to you who doesn’t allow you to speak about just anything.
1:57
But even there, sometimes, I would hear some small news about your support of me and others
2:06
and this was very very very heartwarming for me, (it gave me) some fresh energy.
2:11
If these things didn’t exist, then just like the others who came there and were subject to psychological trauma, we wouldn’t have been able to tolerate it.
2:23
I speak of myself and the other political prisoners who came and went.
2:36
To be honest with you this is my first video, and it's a little hard for me.
2:45
There were a few points that I wanted to share after expressing my thanks.
2:50
One is that they are attacking me very very very hard now that they couldn't keep me in prison.
3:00
And it's because of you who saved me from there, and before that you saved my life,
3:06
, and one time in the year 2021 you saved me. You have saved me three times.
3:12
In a lot of places, they call me a hero even though I'm just a normal person,
3:16
but you are the heroes who saved me. I haven't ever been able to save anybody, anywhere.
3:23
So yes, now that they weren't able to keep me, they are trying like they have before, to assassinate my character,
3:32
by using slander but alongside lumpen suggestions.
3:42
Like, “he confessed” and “who did he snitch on?” Who did I even have to snitch on?
3:46
First of all, as for confession, what did I have to confess? Everything I’ve done has been on your phones, I wasn’t hiding anything to confess to.
3:56
Secondly I didn’t rap for them, the only thing I could’ve done is rap for them, which I obviously didn’t do.
4:04
No one I worked with musically was arrested before or after me, not directors, songwriters, or anyone else, no one who worked with me, no one.
4:15
I was severely tortured during the time of my arrest.
4:21
They broke my arms and my legs. They would hit my face and my head, so at first I would try to cover myself with my hands and they broke my fingers.
4:31
It’s not something fun to share, but the duration of it was very long.
4:36
One of the other political prisoners told me that the injection they gave me in my neck was most likely adrenaline
4:43
so that I didn’t lose consciousness and was made to feel the full possible extent of pain and to suffer it fully for the whole duration of the torture.
4:58
And regarding confession, I didn’t even give up my page.
5:00
On the last day my family was waiting for my release from 9-10am.
5:06
First they didn’t release me from Thursday to Saturday
5:09
which is not right according to the laws of the Islamic republic, they couldn’t keep me under temporary arrest for more than a year.
5:15
Even my 6 year sentence is against Islamic republic law, it’s illegal,
5:19
but when we would speak about their own laws to them, they would say “what are you saying?”, “what is the law?”, “we can do what we want”.
5:29
Anyway, on the last day, the Saturday I was released, from the morning for about 4-5 hours they took me to Mr Barati,
5:44
the judge for my case, and the investigator— although I don’t know what he does specifically, he was in charge of my case, or the highest person in charge of my case.
5:57
He was the one who gave the orders for my torture.
6:01
They were saying to hand over my page to them, now I don’t want this to be me storytelling,
6:08
but I was there for a few hours saying that I would stay there in prison and would not give up my page to them.
6:17
Although I should say that my pages still aren't run by me, they are run by Negin.
6:21
Negin is one of the people, just like all of you, who worked harder than anyone else, like as much as my father, for me, and for my freedom.
6:39
When I was gone there was a lot that happened, many people came forward and spoke on my behalf, claiming they were my relatives.
6:47
I came out with a message that I don’t have family besides my fans.
6:52
I was supposed to introduce a spokesperson, so I introduced Negin before my arrest.
6:59
Before I was arrested I had also chosen Mr. Raisian as my lawyer.
7:08
And I don’t think there are any more points, and I don’t want to talk too much.
7:14
Oh, but in regards to those who are upset that I am healthy now that I’ve been released,
7:18
if four months ago, when I was going from jail to prison, I had been released, of course they wouldn't say that.
7:28
My broken bones are from about one year and one month ago,
7:33
they have naturally healed by now.
7:35
Some of them are crooked
7:38
and they don't bother me that much but sometimes when i'm walking they hurt and shake and I limp a little in my leg.
7:44
Or my hands which bother me when exercising.
7:48
These past few days I got MRIs and went to radiology for x rays
7:53
and I’m going to get work done to fix my teeth over the next few days as well.
8:02
And that’s it, and it's ok, I hope this isn't upsetting for you, I don’t want to upset you by talking about these things.
8:11
They’re bones, they heal.
8:13
And so that I can start exercising again at a professional level and because I wanted to do some things with my boxing, I definitely have to have surgery on my leg.
8:20
Hopefully in the next week or the week after I have to have surgery on my leg and on my hand,
8:27
and after I’ll go back to probably that character that I wanted to be.
8:38
And that’s it, I want to thank you again once more, you’re amazing, you are the strength of our hearts.
8:46
I hope that really good days come for us, it might take time but I believe that we will reach it.
9:02
And I think we will build a very good and cool Iran.
9:07
You’re amazing and I love you a lot. I’m sorry for any sadness I may have caused you.
9:14
Oh and, I’m glad I remembered this before saying goodbye!
9:17
There was a video that I've seen recently being shared of myself, a video made by (IRI) Intelligence.
9:25
I’ll make one more point about the Intelligence agency after this…
9:28
There’s a video they’ve made and are spreading of me,
9:34
where it looks like I am looking at the investigator and saying
9:38
“first I’m sorry to you,”
9:40
even though I never said anything like that. I wasn’t talking to the investigator.
9:47
For 9 hours I was being interviewed and unfortunately it seems I've made one or two gaffs.
9:53
That person asked me something like,
9:57
for example, “if right now the mother of such and such person who went out (to protest) because of you and is in prison now, was in front of you, what would you say?”
10:05
and they edited it to look like I was apologizing to them, which is very laughable.
10:14
And that’s that.
10:16
I wont talk about my torture, to be honest it’s really traumatizing for me.
10:20
I made a complaint (sued them) in regards to my torture,
10:24
and one of the reasons for my complaint was to prove my righteousness so they couldnt say that I lied.
10:30
Because if I lied they could sue me again for defamation/slander.
10:38
I had other reasons for suing as well, like the side effects it could have, in my opinion.
10:44
I also complained about their media for the lies they told.
10:48
One of the lies was that Toomaj was sentenced to death but since he effectively cooperated,
10:53
they gave him six years instead. Why execution? What did I do to be sentenced to execution?
10:57
All that we did at that time was was stand up to the people who would torture people,
11:04
who would shoot people with ‘winchesters’ in the universities, as well as other things.
11:09
They shouldn’t have even arrested me.
11:11
They had no right to arrest me,
11:13
let alone keep me in solitary confinement for 8-9 months.
11:17
Subject me to white torture (sensory deprivation),
11:19
and in the beginning so much physical torture, and, well, other things.
11:25
And about the intelligence agency, i wanted to say, why should one organization be higher than the law?
11:31
The only thing above the law are only the people.
11:34
If they don't want certain laws they could change them
11:39
because the country is theirs, those laws have to be there to protect them,
11:47
and other than the people, no one person or organization should be above the law.
11:55
Intelligence is above the law in Iran.
11:58
Intelligence tortures people– I’m speaking of myself– illegally enters homes, destroys homes or whatever else that they want, and there is no one stopping them.
12:13
Intelligence comes to the investigator and tells them what accusations to make of me.
12:19
An investigator, who I won't name, but who comes to me in secret and tells me “don't write like that there, you aren't feeling well, you don't know what you're writing.”
12:29
In those first days when I was delirious.
12:32
I was unconscious for two days after they put me in a cell.
12:36
So that investigator, now I don't know if his beliefs align with ours or not, that's none of my business, but he has no will.
12:47
Why? Why should an investigator have no will? Why should intelligence tell him what to do/ not to do? Why should he be scared of intelligence?
12:53
Why should the deputy prosecutor be afraid of intelligence? Why should he have to come and ask how I'm doing in fear?
12:59
And ask me indirectly if they are torturing me there as well?
13:03
in jail, they didn't physically torture me but they did do a lot of emotional torture, which the explanation of is too detailed.
13:16
Why should intelligence be able to give orders to the head of the prison and say he has complained about us, make his situation worse in prison.
13:25
And be upset that the personnel in the prison like me, that they are my fans, 70-80% of them.
13:30
Now I'm not speaking about all of the personnel in all of the prisons in Iran, I'm just talking about the things that I've seen.
13:36
It is with pride that I say that 70-80% of the people working in prison are yours and my supporters.
13:44
They are one of us.
13:47
And that's it.
13:50
I think that's an important point that no organization should be above the law.
14:01
Thank you so much, there isn't more to say. you are amazing.
14:06
When the time is right I will come myself, take over my pages and be active again
14:12
but right now, I want to rebuild myself.
14:18
I hope you can give me that time and it doesn't upset you. You’re amazing, sincerely. See you soon.

In summer 2016, I got one of the Japanese bookstore's last copies of the KAITO 10th anniversary album Glorious Blue. The whole album is full of BOPS, but I got particularly hooked on Doctor=Funk Beat by nyanyannya. I was super excited to see it slated to be performed at Magical Mirai later that year. I learned the choreography as fast as I could and became, to my knowledge, the first person to publicly upload a dance cover of Doctor=Funk Beat using the Magical Mirai choreography.
Sometime in the next few months, I got hooked on the rest of nyanyannya's discography and decided to subscribe to his Patreon. We got monthly updates and the early release versions of some songs, which was cool! I believe it was in the announcement post for the song Justin⇒Jive⇒Justify in which he included the song lyrics, footnoted with "It'd be cool if I had an English translation!"
So, like the bilingual student I was, I went 🤔🤔🤔, assembled my best attempt at a translation, and stuck it in the comments with "Hey, I wasn't sure if you were serious about wanting an English translation for this, but in case you were and wanted to use one, I gave it a shot!"
I thought this would be a singular instance, but I was wrong! Unexpectedly, this led to us collaborating on quite a bit of translation work for him over the years, including captions for his music videos back when community captions on YouTube were a thing. It was a really cool experience. I remember consulting one of my housemates, an exchange student from Japan, to help me proofread my responses to the messages we exchanged. Once nyanyannya started to get into Vtubing, I learned how to make subtitle files from scratch to match the skit videos he'd send me so he could upload them with the final product. Most of those videos have sadly been unlisted now, but I have fond memories of his avatar's antics, and many of the one-liners still live in my head rent-free despite the defunct source material.
The cozy fandom for his body of musical work "the Namari Hime series" was led by a dedicated user who'd host regular drawing chats -- the kind where everyone doodles on the same canvas while voice chatting. Every few weeks or months I'd get to wake up ridiculously early to discuss new song releases and favorite characters with a bunch fellow fans from the other side of the Pacific Ocean, and nyanyannya even joined in himself on a couple of occasions. He laughed at the cleverness of me posting a photo in cosplay of one of his characters "Cash" gesturing dramatically at an ATM. He rightly proclaimed our little corner of the Internet a "super cool fandom."
For a while, we had an unofficial Discord server for the worldwide English-speaking sector of the fandom as well. It's probably still out there, actually! It was really cool to see how the fandom grew over the years from just a couple of people to at least several dozen, if not more.
Shortly after protests broke out across the United States in 2020, I woke up to a message from nyanyannya saying he'd seen the news about what was happening on my side of the pond and wanted to ask if I was okay. It was really touching.
I followed his work less closely after he officially started Vtubing, just because, as a college student, I didn't have the spare time to watch a large quantity of ~3-hour-long videos. And a couple of years ago, I stopped financially supporting him after he started experimenting with generative AI to make YouTube thumbnail images and singing samples.
But we still follow each other on Twitter--even though he posts mostly about Vtubing now, and I mostly post about Hoyoverse games and not Namari Hime. I still see the selfies he posts on Instagram from time to time. And I'm still mutuals with a lot of the previous fandom members, too, even though a lot of them are less active and we don't speak directly basically at all anymore.
nyanyannya's song Fräulein=Biblioteka is featured in the ongoing MIKU EXPO North America tour. nyanyannya is not a mainstream musician. In fact, he deliberately quit mainstream music production before he wrote Namari Hime because of the toll it was taking on his mental and physical health, and turned instead to Vocaloid as tool to help him express his individuality, instead of whatever would be the most commercially successful.
Well, that's just one example. There's plenty more.
KIRA, the producer who wrote the featured song "Highlight," is younger than I am by several years. He wrote the lyrics to another one of his hit songs, "MONSTER," when he was sixteen, and almost scrapped it because he thought nobody would like it. Now a song he wrote played at COACHELLA and he's over the moon.
Utsu-P, behind "Hyper Reality Show," is experiencing similar feelings, as he never would have dreamed of one of his songs featuring at Coachella back when his parents bought him Hatsune Miku with graduation money.
yukkedoluce is another of my favorite Vocaloid producers. He grew up wanting to be an astronaut, but didn't qualify because his eyesight was too poor -- so now he lives his dream in a different form by writing Miku songs about space.
At one of the side events at MIKU EXPO 2018, my siblings and I happened to sit next to a Vocaloid producer named Lystrialle who specializes in making contemporary folk music featuring MEIKO and KAITO. I looked up her music after the expo; her album "You, in the Endless Starlight" almost literally defined my sexuality (or lack thereof), and my Genshin Impact AU is named after some of her lyrics. She runs a Mastodon instance for Vocaloid fans.
What I'm trying to say is... there are Vocaloid producers who might be more comparable to mainstream producers, and there are musicians who started with Vocaloid work and eventually transitioned to more mainstream work. But there's also an endless list of Vocaloid producers who make little to no money off their work and hence are far from major corporate entities.
Individuality and collaboration is at the heart of Vocaloids like Hatsune Miku. Miku is primarily a tool to give musicians the power to create the music they want, not to make a highly successful commercial product. I've given an entire hour-long panel on this that convention attendees still remember ten years later, but that's a lot to put into a post that's already long enough, so I'll spare you the details for now.
Vocaloid was one of my first fandoms back in 2011. I got into cosplay and dance because of Vocaloid. Now I'm heavily involved in my local cosplay performance scene, both in terms of participating in events and helping organize them.
How does that phrase go? Do not recite the magic to me; I was there when it was written.
Don't spread misinformation that Vocaloid producers don't care about people's feelings because all they care about is making a commercial Product(tm).
Instead, please fuck all the way off.

Summary: Geoff Castellucci sings and performs "Jack's Lament" from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Proper closed captions in English. Eye contact. A (quiet) jump-scare (with foreshadowing / warning) comes at 1:53-1:54.
Because of the eye contact and jump-scare, I was looking for an audio-only version to post, but there doesn't seem to be one available, yet. And the musicality of this was so delicious, I decided it was worth sharing the full video. I think I must have listened to this at least half a dozen times since it uploaded yesterday.

Cool Examples of Art Forms You Might Think Are Boring
Here's a handful of remarkable works of art forms with a reputation for being boring, stuffy, or inaccessible. These are pieces that I think give a decent introduction to the art form, showcase some interesting benefits of it, and/or that might appeal to people who have previously shrugged or turned up their nose at the genre. I was disinterested in these genres until I was blessed with enough college elective credits to delve deeper into them so here are some curated selections, almost all of them are on YouTube and the opera and ballet clips are mostly under 5 minutes. Have a look around, check out whatever sounds interesting, and feel free to link to more examples.
Silent Films
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: German expressionist horror from 1920. Very stylistically driven and massively influential. The sets alone are worth the watching, and it's essential viewing for any horror fan.
Nosferatu: Another classic horror film, very on-season for Dracula Daily readers. This and the Caligari version above are both updated to have English captions built in.
Le Voyage dans la Lune: Short film from 1902 by Georges Méliès. Méliès is widely known for being arguably the first special effects artist, and this is pretty well agreed upon as the first sci fi movie. If the first part bores you, at least check out the moon set.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed: This 1926 film is the oldest surviving feature length animated film (65 minutes) and it's absolutely stunning. It's created with silhouetted paper cut outs and took three years to make. Vimeo.
Metropolis: This one might be too long for silent film novices at 2.5 hours, but it needs at least a mention. Most lists have this film as their number one silent movie and it's not for no reason.
The Passion of Joan of Arc: This film is mostly known for its groundbreaking use of close-ups and facial expressions. I can't find a good quality version with English subtitles (let me know if you have one) so here's a short clip to show off those camera angles.
Opera
L'incoronazione di Poppea: If you want to get more into opera, why not start with a clip from an opera by the man usually credited with inventing opera. Beautiful piece of music that demonstrates the early days of the art form and a great example of a countertenor (male soprano). The singers also do an excellent job portraying how weird and messed up this relationship actually is.
Salome: To fulfill your "woman covered in blood" needs.
Sellars' Don Giovanni: A 1990 version of Mozart's 1787 masterpiece set in the 1980s in Harlem. A neat take on my personal favorite opera. The rest of the opera is available in segments on Youtube.
Cinderella: A campy 1981 version of a very catchy melody from Rossini.
Wozzeck: I have never seen a version of this that wasn't batshit insane and that's how it should be. This is a later opera from the 1920s that is meant to be atonal and bizarre. It's avant-garde, a little disturbing, and very expressionist. This is a clip from a 2016 version.
The Magic Flute Animation: More Mozart! The first three videos in this playlist are from an animated (and heavily shortened) English version of the Magic Flute. A great way to experience the story and some of the music without watching a whole opera.
The Night Queen Aria: which is from the Magic Flute. If you've only heard one aria, it's probably this one. This is, in my opinion, the best version.
Ballet
Alice in Wonderland: A clip of the tap-based Mad Tea Party scene, featuring great costumes. This performance has a lot of really neat scenes, and I'd also recommend the Middle Eastern-inspired Caterpillar scene (I mean just look at this man move).
Swan Lake coda: These two can fly. A great clip of a famous coda that demonstrates just how superhuman these dancers need to be.
Mr. Jeremy Fisher: This is the frog ballet that you've definitely seen gifs of on tumblr. I can't find the whole thing, but here's a 5 minute clip that also shows off that beautiful set.
Frankenstein: I never knew I needed this but I love it. This clip is more acting than dancing, so here's another that shows off some ballet skills.
Don Quixote: I just love the joy in this scene, and those floaty skirts are amazing. Also someone gets slapped by a fish.
Edward Scissorhands: Another interesting adaption choice. Watch the way they have to dance so that the scissors never touch her skin, that is highly unnatural for a duet and must have been very difficult to choreograph.
If there's another art form you think people should give a second look, let me know!

You cannot convince me that this video's high view count isn't at least half sourced from bots.
It's a good song and decent animation, which would usually have all the makings of a viral video. But I never saw this trending, haven't heard this (admittedly good) song anywhere. Neither it nor the movie it's connected to show up in Google results, and despite 51 Million views in 2 months, hardly anyone is talking about it on Tumblr or Twitter. And despite such a high view count, the promotional tweets and retweets have barely any attention.
Most of the Instagram & YouTube comments for an English song (with no closed captions, English or otherwise) for a movie with a British cast are in Spanish? And a lot of the Instagram posts are advertising the song over and over with nothing new to them. "Hey, we have a thing! Look at it! It exists! :D"
This movie's been in production for a while at least, since 2 years ago a guy named Trevor Wall posted a very similar animation for a band also called The Meeps comprised of nearly the same animals. It seems like a prototype animation to gauge interest (even if the final product is entirely different).

youtube
romania | 4 minutes | 2021 | music video audio in english; no closed captions, but song lyrics are listed in the film description
coming of agency, directed by bogdan balla, is music video for sofia zadar (they/them), an experimental pop musician and performer. the film matches the dreamy, nonlinear, queer nature of the song itself, playing around with gender fuckery, anger, and celebration all together. the film is explicitly political as well: a character reads marco mieli’s 1977 towards a gay communism: elements of a homosexual critique, complementing lyrics like, “I will not be impregnated with your seeds of conformity / I will not pray to the holy rails of progress”. visual trigger warning: bright flashing lights from 3:10 to 3:18. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch on youtube, and find both sofia zadar and director bogdan balla on instagram

hey to anyone that makes closed captions/subtitles for youtube videos or other audio/video content: don’t put cutesy commentary or effects on the subtitles you are defeating the point of them
like i lvoe the song galleria but the english subtitles in that video are absolutely incomprehensible . or like when someone is captioning a video and adds additionally commentary or jokes in the subtitles. like it doesn’t help
