Ya Qing is... intrigued despite herself.
"And what would you have me do instead? Nothing, like your uncle, like the Flower tribe? Just wait while the humans take more and more, wait until there's nothing left for us?" Zhu Hong stared back calmly. Surprisingly confident. "I would speak to Heipaoshi-daren on our behalf." Ya Qing's feathers flared in shock before she could catch herself.

This poll might look a little familiar.... Due to a timing mix-up yesterday, I am proud to present the 'Best Non-Sword Weapon' poll take 2: Electric Boogaloo!
This time I've chosen to group the options by weapon with wielders in brackets*. Due to space issues, the media that each of them come from is under the read more, and this is definitely a non-exhaustive list!
*Except Xie Lian, who by virtue of winning the previous poll has been brought straight through to part two!
Thank you to everyone from the NiF discord and the watch party discord (and especially @shadaras) who have been amazing at suggesting characters with non-sword weapons! Couldn't have have done it without you! Also thank you to @thebansacredbanned who looked up the names of various obscure characters for me.
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!
Fan Wen Kexing (Word of Honour) Shen Qingqiu (SVSSS) Qing Ming (Yin Yang Master)

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

There's a very cute and easy-to-miss bit of Dual Protective Boyfriending that happens here. When the Scooby Gang confronts Wang Xiangyang in this inexplicably barrel-lined industrial alley, Ya Qing arrives in an explosive poof of dark energy. In reponse:
Shen Wei starts moving the second that bird shows up, going straight for Zhao Yunlan and putting himself bodily between potential disaster and bisexual disaster. He's back on guard the second the explosive force starts to dissipate, though. His reaction times are really good when what he's reacting to is not getting a lollipop shoved in his pretty little mouth.
Chu Shuzhi tales a second longer to get going, but when he does, he grabs the hem of his coat and uses it to both spin Guo Changcheng so he's away from the explosion and cover his head. Maybe Chinese censorship thinks it's not gay when you tenderly protect another man from danger but also you look a little bit like Batman when you do it? I couldn't say.
Meanwhile, Zhu Hong, left to fend for herself on the other side, considers her two options, compares their relative sizes, and unceremoniously deputizes Lin Jing as her human shield, which honestly is a very good use for him.

Did I hallucinate that at some point in the Guardian drama, Guo Changcheng knows how to perform first aid, or is that fanon and I've just seen it in so many fics I assumed it had some basis in the show?
I was showing an ep to a friend last night and when ZYL carries Zhu Hong in after she's attacked by Ya Qing, GCC openly states that he doesn't know how to perform first aid, which... honestly throws a massive wrench into my WIP, so I really hope it's a case of bad series continuity. Otherwise I'm going to have to rewrite about 70,000 words. 😅

Ruffling Feathers
Rating: G Characters: Zhu Hong, Da Qing, Ying Chun, Fourth Uncle, Ya Qing Words: 7.1k Tags: post-canon, casefic, Yashou politics & worldbuilding, High Chief Zhu Hong
Summary: Zhu Hong is more than ready to delay her responsibilities for old times' sake when Da Qing approaches her about his missing bells. But the case takes them smack-dab into internal Yashou politics and Zhu Hong's mettle as High Chief is put to the test.
For the 520 Day exchange, this is my gift for shadaras! It was awesome to write for such an incredible writer :D Check out their works if you’re at it!
*
That morning, Zhu Hong walked into the SID's offices with mixed feelings, carrying an empty box.
Everything felt different. There was no Wang Zheng to greet her – she and Sang Zan were on leave in order to recuperate from their ordeal, their energy having been sapped during their stay in Ye Zun’s stomach. It was a miracle they had survived at all. Lin Jing was supposed to rest, too, but as Zhu Hong walked through the bullpen she could hear the familiar sound of an explosion coming from the lab. Not that she could blame him. She, too, had kept busy in the aftermath of their hard-earned victory.
She nodded to xiao-Guo, who was corralling all the rookie hopefuls under lao-Chu's stern eye. Xiao-Guo gave her a bashful smile and a little wave, but he didn’t run over to come help her. This, too, had changed. He’d grown into himself and found new responsibilities to shoulder. Being a senior to the newbies suited him well. Zhu Hong half-wished she could see it, see what sort of mentor xiao-Guo would make. She shoved the thought to the back of her mind, setting her box down on her desk chair with a decisive thump.
Lao-Zhao wasn’t here, hadn’t been since the invasion. Instead, he was busy with a PR campaign, making use of the current public approval to secure more funding for the SID, despite the fact he was still recovering from his own injuries. She supposed giving interviews wasn’t too hard, as long as he sat still for a bit. Still, she hadn’t seen him since the battle ended. Someone should make sure he was eating properly, and…
Not her problem. Not any longer, she thought with a pang.

[id: gifs from the television series “Guardian.” They show the character Ya Qing pinning Zhu Hong up against a tree and choking her. The leader of the Snake Yashou says, “You chose this big day to ruin the mood. Are you planning to separate from us and make do on your own?” Ya Qing responds, “So what?” Ying Chun then runs up and says, “Sister Qing, are you crazy?” Ya Qing responds, Ying Chun. I realize that you don’t understand my intentions.” She then throws out a hand and attacks the leader of the Snake Yashou with dark energy. Suddenly, Shen Wei runs into the scene, holding a blind Zhao Yunlan’s arm. Shen Wei throws dark energy at Ya Ching and propels Zhu Hong towards Zhao Yunlan, yelling, “Catch!” Zhao Yunla asks, “Catch what?” and then startles when Zhu Hong comes barreling into him. Both Ying Chun and the leader of the Snake Yashou run to their sides, and Zhao Yunlan looks around in a stunned manner before patting Zhu Hong on the shoulder. /end id]

The skin under Ya Qing's gloves is soft, is as to be expected; she only uses her claws when she has them. Her palm is sweaty against Zhu Hong's, but every time she tries to pull away with an excuse, Zhu Hong holds on tighter. On her other side she can see Ying Chun bring Ya Qing's knuckles up to her mouth and kiss them. A flower is tucked in the crease between Ya Qing's fingers when she pulls back, tiny and purple: Clematis, Zhu Hong's brain supplies. She's been learning from Hua Yuzhu; not that Ying Chun wouldn't tell her, but Zhu Hong likes the bright light in her eyes when Zhu Hong tries.
(She has been trying so hard.) "This is pointless," Ya Qing says. Her upper lip is beading sweat as well: the heat is merciless, today, and she continues to swathe herself in black. Zhu Hong respects the commitment. "I can fly." "So this should be a breeze," Zhu Hong says, because she has learned that Ya Qing finds it amusing when she is mean. Sure enough Ya Qing glares at her, and it takes a little bit of the blazing panic out of her eyes. As Ying Chun ducks to hide a laugh Zhu Hong turns to skate backwards, slow as slow so she can keep holding Ya Qing's hand. "Just move your weight to one side. We've got you, Qing-jie." Doubtfully, clutching at both of them, Ya Qing cocks her hip to the outside. Her ankles are rolled in; she immediately begins to topple, and has to be propped back up by Ying Chun's easy willow-tree grace. The intensity of her stink-eye begins to rival that of the sun. "I wanted to have a picnic." "Picnics are lovely," Ying Chun agrees, because she is the sweetest person who has ever existed, and because she is basically half herbaceous. Since she has progressed to audible laughter, breathy and soft, Ya Qing doesn't seem to be appeased. "Point your feet straight ahead, remember?" "I am," Ya Qing snaps. There is a pause while they all look down. She is not. Her face begins to flush blotchily. Zhu Hong clucks her tongue, but she relents and bends her elbow so she can return to Ya Qing's side. Just in time: a squad of teenagers screams by on skateboards, asphalt scraping, and Ya Qing flinches hard enough one of her rollerblades leaves the ground completely. Delinquents. The next time they pass by Zhu Hong might trip one or two, teach them a lesson.
"Come on," Ying Chun coaxes; she strokes one hand soothingly down Ya Qing's back to rest it at her waist. "Once around the park, and then we can go?" "...I hate you both," Ya Qing says, teeth gritted tightly, and Zhu Hong starts laughing, too.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are in fact two versions of the SID family photo. The first one’s the one that makes it into the show -- the last shot in the credits and the image Lin Jing passive-aggressively leaves up as his wallpaper when he gets booted from SID.
The second one survives as a separate production still ... and honestly, is the better photo. Nearly everybody is smiling a little better in it, with their mouths open just a touch more, their expressions a little more comfortable. The biggest change, though, is that in this one, Lin Jing is actually looking at the camera. It’s a much more professional shot that makes everybody look just that much better.
And I’m so glad they went with the one they did, because it looks less professional. The second version looks like the actors; the first version looks like the characters. The version that wound up in the show has all the charm to it of a timed photograph that went off just a little earlier than everyone was expecting it to.
Judging by what everybody’s wearing, this picture must have been taken during the events of episode 28, somewhere between the time they get Sha Ya in the interrogation room and the time Zhao Yunlan knocks himself out by getting too handsy with the Sundial. There’s not really a good lull in there for taking a picture, but it’s almost too easy to imagine Lin Jing as being one of those people who just gets a bee in his bonnet about, we have to get a group picture right now. Sure, his electric girlfriend’s on the lam and somebody’s coming to kill them all with a paintbrush, but we’re all here right now, you guys, it won’t take five minutes, come on, guys, please?
Everybody finally relents because Lin Jing is real good by now at annoying them all into submission, so they all let him arrange them appropriately and smile obligingly as he gets his phone on a tripod and presses the timed shutter button, only he has a little trouble running all the way around the whole setup at the end of the table and doesn’t quite make it into place by the time the picture takes. He tries to rally them all again, but Lao Li’s gone to check on Da Qing’s fish dinner, the ghosts have literally disappeared, and Zhu Hong is promising that if one more man tells her to smile today, she’s going to do it with fangs.
Oh well. At least nobody blinked.
