Tradition vs Modernity vs Comradery

+ context & lore:

In the first drawing, Fernando is wearing a capote de paseo, which is what bullfighters wear before the match begins, as seen below:

In the second, Seb is shouting the very familiar "Olé" which is shouted by the crowd to praise the matador. He's a little brat, so of course he's yelling it for himself, but he did get many 💐

The third(which was a random sketch I had that I didn't think I'd finish tonight, so ignore if its messy) has very important context to me. Before going to the final act and killing the bull, matadors dedicate their montera(hat)(and symbolically: their kill) to a a specific person in the audience(or just the public as a whole.) Seb and Fernando are finally in the same color! Seb is bowing!!! And Fernando is honoring Seb!!!! Also ignore that I drew Seb's post-retirement hair. Though, maybe this drawing is supposed to represent Fernando making a dedication to his now-gone rival 😔(Seb: stop telling people im dead!)

Now, some more lore :D

So I talked about this in my last matador post but I'll expand more. I think it's very funny to characterize Fernando in this au as this fun-hating traditionalist. Because you have to understand; he's only this way when it comes to Seb. Because you absolutely KNOW he was doing silly, unserious shit back when he was younger. But absolutely god forbid Seb do anything silly.

It's very ironic because there literally is a part in the third act of a bull fight where it's basically encouraged to be a bit silly. This is a tad morbid, but basically right before they deliver the killing blow, some show their mastery over the bull by doing some superfluous action(ex. kissing the bull, kneeling in front of the bull.) There's some guy who literally would lean on the bull and mime taking a call. But anyways, Seb would def do this. I've not been able to draw it exactly how I want, but he would bend down and do his little bull horn symbol and mime charging at the bull. (Fernando, trying to make up reasons to hate Seb: oh my god, look at this blatant disrespect, look how he is disrespecting the bull, I cannot believe how rude this boy is!)

Also there's something to be said about how the matador shows mastery over the bull by kissing it or bowing to it...and Seb is technically the bull in this au and Fernando is the matador. There's just this unfortunate level of weird power inbalance that still lingers even though their rivalry is over and can't be affected anymore. There was no succinct answer about who truly was better because Seb was forced out of it. So there's always gonna be this level of "is he just pitying me? Is he just mocking me? Is he just patronizing me?" on Seb's part whenever Fernando praises him or makes dedications to him. And Fernando's always going to be haunted by the fact that there's no answer to who is truly better because he'll never know if Seb had reached his full potential or not. Anyways, they also have nasty sex while wearing their costumes and do weird bull/matador roleplay :)

Fishuary 2024 Week 1

Yes, I actually did it! it was a lot of work lol

Day 1: Shark. I chose the newborn great white that went mildly viral recently, in watercolor and ink

Day 2: Salmonid. I did a Gila trout in watercolor and ink

Day 3: Wrasse. I did a moon wrasse in gouache paint

Day 4: Surgeonfish. I did some kind of juvenile, I don't know what species but it's clear, in black pen.

Day 5: Triggerfish. This one really made me actually want to do this lol. I did a lagoon triggerfish, specifically the one from the "do you fart" meme where one repeatedly swims into a camera, in colored pencil.

Day 6: Catfish/Pleco. I did an albino Cory in pink pen

Day 7: Blowfish/Pufferfish. I made a dogface pufferfish in colored pencil.

Yes these are all on index cards lol. I perhaps may have done 4 of them today because I spent way too long on the wrasse hehehe

He reached into his cloak and removed a heavy piece of parchment, pushing it towards her with his gloved hand. She took it, flipping it open and staring at the ruins inked into the weathered pages. It was a map. A map she had been looking for, for ages. Her violet eyes flicked up to meet his piercing blue ones. “You found it?” she murmured. “In a way,” he answered vaguely. She opened her mouth to speak when her nose wrinkled, an odd scent permeating through the smoke, sweat, and ale-scented smog of the pub. It was a scent she had only smelled once in her life. The worst day of it. Wolf Her lips curled in a snarl; in the Stormlands, Drogon screeched, turning northward immediately to be at her side. The fire sang in her blood and she turned her fingers up, curling them, drawing the candle flames near to her. Except…this had something to it. It was cloaked. The wolf was trying to hide. She cocked her head, her violet eyes almost black, staring at Davis. “There’s a wolf here.” Davos smirked. “I hear there’s one in the Kingswood. The local children tell stories. They don’t go there.” “Wolves can’t survive long out of the North.” They were her mortal enemies. The ones who helped murder her family. She scanned the pub, but saw nothing out of the ordinary, until she paused, her gaze landing on a black cloaked figure standing at the bar. She narrowed her eyes, tapping her fingers on the table, fire burning through her skin, dancing from fingertip to fingertip. The person at the bar was magical, but she couldn't put her finger on why. The figure turned, glancing her direction, and for a brief second, she saw a pale face, dark beard, and piercing set of gray eyes before the figure disappeared into a throng of people who had just entered the pub. She sat straighter, one hand disappearing the map into her cloak, the other flicking her hood further over her silver hair; she had been here too long. There were some who were beginning to notice. This might be neutral territory for the likes of her, but Targaryens did not survive long in Westeros and it was best she get a move on. Davos tapped his fingers to his lips, smiling vaguely. "You might want to canvass the Kingswood, search for this mysterious wolf. The children refer to him as the Big Bad Wolf." "Well they're children, they're stupid." He shrugged, as if to give her that point. She didn’t like the fact that the wolf scent had been so powerful, but also so fleeting. She also didn’t like the fact she couldn’t tell what sort of magic the black-cloaked figure held. It probably didn’t matter; this city was a transit point for anyone seeking access to the greater part of Westeros. She nodded to Davos, standing swiftly in one move. “Davos.” He smiled again. “Search the Kingswood. You might find…something useful.”

I mention things from Hermit Room. quotes are paraphrased or referenced bc i am too lazy to dig for them.

sanemitsu and seodore are two people who, by the end of dlc, have very different perspectives on how to handle the timeline and what should be done. Sanemitsu in particular goes through several perspectives on this, varying from his POV pre-1999, 1999-2015, S root, and S+. They are parallels and narrative foils, and this shapes how they interact with each other.

From their first interactions, they both have something that the other party wants. Seodore promises that Sanemitsu can change things, if they can reach Gods Love. Sanemitsu is critical to changing things (as we see in the start of DLC/S root). You can see them talk about this in record 4, where neither of them will know if Sanemitsu's ability has activated or taken effect. Seodore wants Sanemitsu to use this ability. Sanemitsu resists because he knows that if he changes the past, then he'll lose Reiji. Reiji, who is his number one priority, who he's clinging to as tight as he can.

But they appreciate each other. There's fondness. Their breakfast conversation at the end of DLC highlights that despite them ending up on different perspectives on the past, they still understand each other.

What always stands out to me is in Hermit room, there is a choice that the player can make. The two options are (paraphrased):

Even if we gained something at the end of it, it would have been better if none of it had happened. [better to change the past even if we gained something in the end]

If we gained something at the end of it, then we can't say that it would have been better that none of it had happened. [better that the past happens (good and bad), if we gained something in the end of it]

This choice is both paralleling Sanemitsu's perspective change in S vs S+, and the perspective of Seodore versus Sanemitsu (and System.NH) as two halves of the same whole. They're foils, and remain on good terms despite their differing POVs.

it's about the Metafiction. Sanemitsu doesn't break the fourth wall until after our current point in canon (System.NH is 2019 and also Outside the Timeline). Seodore breaks it ALL the time bc he Knows but doesnt SEE. Tangent but can you tell I really like the metafiction groups. I like System.NH + Seodore + Mutei, I think it's fun.

It's about the quiet things going on in the background. About blood, about factors, about inheritance. The contrast between the domesticity of daily life (seodore canonically makes him breakfast!). It's about "I'll take your hand, Seodore" (PARAPHRASING AGAIN) and things left unspoken. It's about what he says about Seodore in his journal from 1999. (see just before record 4. yt tl doesnt show us whats inside unfortunately).

Also it's SO good that they have other priorities than each other. They both know and are fully aware of this and it's so <33

This is why I like the intro scene to DLC so much too-- they both know that they're dying there. Even if this plan works, even if things change, even if the interaction between the Rainbow Factor Artifact (Malkuth) and Respawn means that there's a chance to save Reiji, then the selves that exist in this moment still die. This is peak yaoi to me.

There is something to be said about how sanemitsu refuses to risk using this power, until the very last moment. He only does so when Reiji is dead and he's lost the last person he wanted to cling to so desperately.

Fun Fact: Seodore has his eyes closed for this entire scene except for ONE frame as sanemitsu raises the blade <3

I realize a lot of this is about them as a duo but not necessarily in a shipping lens oops.

From the lens of them as a COUPLE, they dont talk about it LMAO. They are doing couple things and ignoring their feelings about it bc theyre both still mourning other people. I do think they're the kind of couple who do domestic things like grocery shopping together,, cooking,, sitting around at home,, a casual kind of comfort in each other. The hand holding symbolism gets to me. "ill take your hand" linked with THIS SCENE, RIGHT AFTER THAT LINE. Linked with Sanemitsu's scarred hand only being present in S+ because it comes from killing Seodore. They mean everything to me.

This ended up off topic. this all factors into the dynamic of two guys who keep thinking about other things and have a lot going on but can choose to find comfort in each other regardless. i think they should kiss <3
